Students may have noticed a new addition to PHS during the past month--the appearance of purple and gold lights on the front of the main building.

Senior Jake Brown explains that the inspiration behind the lights came from his love for the holidays.

“You look around Puyallup and all of these holiday lights are up, so I figured Puyallup [High School] might as well have some holiday lights,” Brown said.

“I just love the holidays. [I thought the lights] would make [the school] better and brighten people’s day [when they] came to school.”

Brown reveals how the lights serve to represent PHS. “[The lights] symbolize the school with the school colors and [they are] not just meant to [represent the] holidays. They are spirit related and show people that we are proud to go here,” Brown said.

The school additionally received a discount when purchasing the decorations.

Shirts fundraise for cancer research B Y

enior DECA students Jessica Brown, Kendra Windham and Christa Seeber created T-shirts as a fundraiser called Horns for Hope.

Brown explains the team’s goals for the sale. “[The shirts are] raising money for Fred Hutch Cancer Research and the profits we make will go there to Fred Hutch. Our goal is $1,000,” Brown said.

The T-shirts were designed in the spirit of presenting students and staff as people who support others with all types of cancer. “[There are] horns for the Viking [spirit] and a purple ribbon. Purple

to represent all cancers instead of just one specific cancer. On the back is another ribbon and then a Viking head to show Puyallup Vikings are [supporting the research]. The ‘Fight on’ is just fighting on for people who have cancer,” Brown said.

On coming up with the idea for the shirts Windham describes the help they sought from business and marketing teacher and DECA adviser Kim Root.

“Our teacher Mrs. Root helped us a lot with the idea [for the shirts] and we built off of it and came up with our own ideas,” Windham said.

The shirts will be sold for $13 throughout the week of Dec. 15 as well as two additional weeks in January.

The Viking Vanguard operates as a limited forum.

The Viking Vanguard’s duty is to expand student perspectives, maintain community relations and act as a student publication advocating voice. Besides providing an opportunity for the exchange of viewpoints, The Viking Vanguard serves as an academic tool by which students can voice opinions as well as highlight issues facing today’s students.

Time is a fleeting thing. It flows in a single direction, alumni are celebrating the time they had at PHS. It will not be long before many of us are doing the same an unbroken river that never diverges from its path. It is destructive, it reconstructs the broken and it changes all thing. Time will slip out of mind and the next thing you know you will be living your own life and possibly returning things.

Time cannot be diverted from its course by any man- to your own Alumni Assembly. We will all be reminiscing made dam if such a thing could exist, it is not a thinking about our good and bad experiences. We can only hope that the good times outweigh the bad entity that you can make a deal times. Hopefully we will look back at our with to extend your amount of it.

Clunker car teaches lessons Every car has certain quirks, qualities that make them possibly-rotting interior, are mysterious and offensive.

Simply put, old cars can be completely upsetting to all of distinct and unique.

Cars older than high school students generally have man’s senses. Or in some cases, old cars can be images of classic beauty and a view into the olden days. more of these distinctions.

Either way, having an old car requires a certain mindset.

While these older cars fall into two different categories, If you have a timeless, well maintained and classic car—be they both have similar characteristics.

All old cars are heard before they are seen, spoken about humble.

It will make your car seem even more awesome if you as they drive by. They are distinct and unique.

But this is where the two different categories come remain humble and kind.

And if you have a multicolored, squealing, into play. Some old cars are renowned for their smelly beauty of a car like many students and stunning beauty, perfect paint, roaring engine I do, rock it. and classic interior.

I have an ugly car.

Thanksgiving dinner was extremely memorable; we took et me just say that “Rhapsody in Blue,” by George Gershwin, is my absolute favorite song. It is a band the subway to Midtown Manhattan and ate at Delmonico’s kid’s fantasy, with trills and outrageous melodies that Kitchen. Four courses of delectableness consumed my can blow minds. If you have read The Great Gatsby, listen evening, along with a stomach ache from stuffing it too full.

The entire trip was full of fabulous food, including a to this song, because in the first few notes it sets off the picturesque moment of Gatsby turning his head and saying speak-easy themed restaurant in the back of a pawn shop.

Ha everal renovations and changes have been made to PHS since 1964, cla bu with two remodels occurring since then.

One remodel occurred in the ‘70s and the other occurred in 1993.

One change made was the removal of a gym that was located in the all commons.

Health and Fitness teacher Sue Krippaehne, graduated from PHS in stu dr 1972. Krippaehne explains what the layout of the school was like.

“In 1972 the gym was where the commons is [now], so the commons did pr not even exist. The gym went down into [the ground], probably where the for tables are in the commons… where people would sit. It was a wooden th sunken gym and the cafeteria was over where Thiessen’s class is. Other for than that they have tried to keep it the same old style,” Krippaehne said.

In 1993 the school had its most recent renovation, in which the building Ha was brought up to disabilities code. This was the same year that teacher Fred Orton came to teach.

“When it was remodeled it had to come up to code for students who had Pu disabilities. Alumna Margaret (Longabaugh) Fillo remembers PHS and its class structure to be quite different from how it is today.

“We had three classes a day, each one was two hours long. Then on Fridays we had all six classes,” Fillo said.

Fillo recalled the classes she took senior year, which included study hall: something that is no longer offered at PHS. “I had US History and an English class; I had a P.E. class and I had study hall. We used to have study hall an hour a day. I had it set up where I would take all my classes that I had to take early so my senior year I had a study hall each day. I only had to take four classes that year,” Fillo said. “I enjoyed my English class and as a senior you did not have to take P.E. but I did it because I enjoyed P.E.” Fillo’s fourth class was Secretarial Science.

“Secretarial Science was where we learned to do the old fashioned adding machine where you pushed the button and pulled the crank down. There were Dictaphones where if you worked in an office your boss would talk into a microphone to dictate a letter and then you would transcribe it,” Fillo said.

According to Fillo, this class was helpful later in life.

“For about a year I worked at Merrill Lynch, the stock broker,” Fillo said.

After working at Merrill Lynch, Fillo got married. After her children were in school she worked in a school district with children who needed help learning to read and do math.

azen said. “The ability to incorporate the technology in some of the old assrooms is more difficult to do, it was easier to do in the brand new uilding.”

STEM teacher Randy Lippold has access to a recently updated lab that lows his students to build items they designed.

“We have a pretty amazing lab here, we have a computer for every udent in class. Then on the computer we have many different computer rafting programs and we also have many different computer machining rograms,” Lippold said. “We are so lucky to be able to have the opportunity r kids to design things and then make them. A lot of schools can design hem but they do not get to build anything. I think that is a real motivator r students to push their limits.”

Another change in the recent years was the moving of the tennis courts. azen describes why they were moved.

“For years they had four tennis courts and an old shop building where the new building is. PHS alumni are different from those of other schools, according to azen.

“The thing about PHS, it is a wonderful school, it has a great tradition nd] it has a storied history. There are people who support PHS more han any other school I know, you can look at our Winter Wishes program nd the alumni support they have for that. You can look at our athletics nd see the alumni that constantly come back for that,” Hazen said. “It incredible. Not a lot of other schools do that, I do not come back to my gh school and I love my high school. I do not go to watch high school ames just because I went there, where in Puyallup they do.”

Alumnus John Iles is proud to be a graduate of PHS, class of 1964.

“I enjoyed my high school very much. I had a lot of good friends,” Iles said.

Iles recalled freshman year, when the class of 1964 won a competition against the other classes.

“When we were freshmen there was a competition to have a skit. It was done in what was the old gym, in the center of the school. We were freshmen and we beat the seniors that year.

That was impressive,” Iles said.

Traditionally, the seniors won all of the competitions.

“The skits were a competition: who was going to have the most interesting [skit]… we won.

We beat the seniors,” Iles said. “I think [our skit] referenced the Space Needle, I do not exactly remember. We had made a needle out of some cardboard and foil. It was a good time.”

However, the year was not entirely good.

“That was the year that John Kennedy was killed. I do not know if it affected my schooling

but I will always remember where I was when I heard about it. I was leaving physics going over to the cafeteria area. Everybody was all abuzz about it,” Iles said.

One of the other classes that Iles took at PHS was typing.

“I do not know why I took typing but I did.

There were plenty [of kids] in the typing class,” Iles said. “It was one of those deals where you had to have so many electives.”

The typing class that Iles took proved to be helpful later in his life. “[When I took typing] I thought that it was ridiculous but later on it paid off because I had a little tiny bit of skill when computers came in,” Iles said. “The last 10 years of my life I had a job as a representative for the building trades and I needed to have computer or typing skills.”

Haley Smith knows firsthand the effects to being in the school environment with your parent.

“People are always watching out for me at school and would report back to him but the best part about having him at school with me was that if I had a problem he was right there to help and made sure things were easy for me,” Haley Smith said.

“Sometimes people will tell me [their opinion about my dad] and I get mixed emotions but I think he is alright, he is pretty cool.”

Megan Fredericks also knows the ups and downs of having an educator for a parent.

“I know my dad does talk to some of my teachers about me spontaneously but it is good,” Megan Fredericks said. “I have heard of people being afraid to talk to me because I am the principal’s daughter. If I need anything like a paper signed it is really easy to get it on the spot which is nice.”

For Matt White, the only downfall to going to school with his child is the schedule she has to be on for him.

“She has to get up early to come to school with me because I have to get here early which is a difficult thing for her. I have to get here about 7:15 a.m.,” Matt White said.

he awkward transition from the ‘80s to the ‘90s was the year of 1989 when hard grunge filled the air.

Loud electric guitar in the background of screaming voices and angry shouts were the common sounds in the year 1989. Alternative rock shook the world of 1989.

The Pixies, Nine Inch Nails, The Stone Rose and The Beastie Boys were all common bands that angsty teens jammed out to in their cars after school on Fridays on their way to the local drive-in theatre. Musically this was a transition from the ‘80s and that kind of music slowly became unpopular.

Tunes that made you shift in your seat a little, maybe even make you uncomfortable from how odd it was were played everywhere during this period of time. Melodies that were far from the “norm” filled each stereo with excited faces and eyes of rebellion. If you have ever listened to The Pixies or Nine Inch Nails, you will understand the rebellious and exciting vibe I am speaking of.

The Pixies album Doolittle released in 1989 stirred up the curious and eerie whispers that the sane ignored. Sweet and melodic was the tune from some specific tracks from the album but absolutely ear-bleeding, mocking and brutal were other tracks. This album release inspired many and shaped the way future bands would produce music in this alternative rock era of music.

Nirvana was also a key stone in terms of the alternative rock section of music that was widely produced this year. Though it is said they hated the term “grunge” to describe their music, Nirvana was definitely a key part of underground music that became very popular in 1989.

In contrast to the world of alternative rock that shook the world of 1989, 1964 was a completely different year of music. Calming music that told stories and made you tap your foot filled the air of this century 50 years ago.

The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles were artists very popular in this era and have survived the dirt and grime from the centuries and are still around today.

Something you might find similar to that of a scene from the motion picture Grease that was released in 1978, swing music that made you want to get up from your seat and dance was more common than not in this year of glamour and big hair, big bows and moderately high heels.

If you ever heard Frank Sinatra today, it would most likely be his well-known tune, “Fly Me to the Moon” at your high school dance. Believe it or not, in the year 1964 his album Frank Sinatra & Count Basie: It Might As Well Be Swing was not played just at school dances when they needed a classy slow song but everyday music on the radio. With a steady beat in the background, trumpets and the saxophone, Sinatra’s voice filled this era with class and steady rhythm pleasing to the ear.

It is hard to tie together two totally different eras of music together but they both have one thing in common; their melodies never faded away. They are still stacked neatly on bookshelves of grunge and house music lovers.

Every now and then these bands show up on the radio, make an appearance at a concert or tweet to long-lived followers. Still around today, the beloved melodies of 1989 and 1964 are still very much alive today.

here is a great deal of credibility to be awarded to any movie that can endure the test of time—a movie that resonates with an audience years after it was originally produced.

The “Incredible Mr. Limpet,” a movie that had its debut in 1964, has done just that.

Featuring a lovably-awkward bookkeeper named Henry Limpet who dreams of joining the military, the movie highlights Henry’s trials and tribulations as he searches for his place in society, wanting to be someone remarkably important. Knowing that his dreams of joining the military are far-fetched and unattainable, Henry expresses his desire to become a fish after realizing that their lives seem effortless and enjoyable.

After professing the seemingly impossible desire, the man’s wish is magically granted and he earns himself a pair of dorsal fins and a set of gills after he falls into the ocean. Once a fish, Henry realizes that he has the power to help the U.S. Navy like he has always dreamed of as he works to help locate and destroy Nazi submarines in the World War. The movie is a comedic fantasy and is enhanced by subtle jokes. Don Knotts’ character is unique and well-casted for his role as the absurd and mildly bizarre bookkeeper Henry Limpet. The plot is easy to follow and does not tend to deviate from what one might expect, making it easy to predict. Despite the predictability of the plot, the movie was not overly boring nor was it monotonous.

Because the movie blended a fantasy story with a historical event, the tale is interesting and enjoyable for people of all ages. The humor is youthful and spirited, making it appropriate for the young and the young-atheart.

Though the animations are primitive in quality in comparison to the animations of today, they do not detract from the overall quality of the movie. Henry Limpet’s character in fish form is well-drawn and accurately captures his humanly characteristics. There is a disconnect when the scenes include animations side-by-side real people, however, that is due to the lack of editing techniques that were available in the 1960s.

Overall, the movie is wonderful for anyone interested in a youthful tale about a man who turns into a fish. The plot is enjoyable and the story is not hindered by its age.

“The Incredible Mr. Limpet” has maintained its entertainment value despite the fact that it was created 50 years ago.

tell the difference between the Special Olympic athletes and the peer helpers playing with them.

Junior Sean Zuehlsdorff has been a peer helper for two years now. With his mom having been a special education teacher with the last 26 years, Zuehlsdorff became interested in the Special Olympics program.

Being able to bond with both the athletes and the other peer helpers is something that is important to Zuehlsdorff and he hopes that he can help the team return once again to the state competition.

“It is nice to bond with all of the kids who want to be a part of the team,” Zuehlsdorff said.

Junior Jamauzhtahye Smith has also been working with Special Olympics for two years now.

“I wanted to help kids because it was in my true interest and I love basketball and giving back,” Smith said.

For Smith, basketball is the only sport that he gets to participate as a peer helper but he wishes that he had the opportunity to volunteer with more sports.

For this season the team’s goals are not only to have fun and make friends but also to improve their athletic skills as well as once again qualify and return to compete in the State championship tournament.
