The conductor raises his baton, motioning for the start of the brassy overture, overlaid with the murmurs of an excited audience.

Soon, a handful of actors make their way onto the stage, signaling the end of the overture and the beginning of the musical.

The audience is immersed into the world of The Music Man, being introduced to the people of River City, Iowa, through song and dance.

NATIONAL SUPER BOWL PERFORMER Justin Timberlake was announced as the Super Bowl LII halftime performer at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn.. The Super Bowl will take place Feb. 4, 2018.

FREIGHT TRAIN DERAILED A freight train carrying fuel from Lubumbashi to Luena in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Nov. 12 derailed and caught fire. At least 34 people were killed and 26 injured in the accident.

IRAN EARTHQUAKE Iran sustained a 7.3 magnitude earthquake on Nov. 13. This catastrophic natural disaster left 7000 injured and killed more than 450 people across Iraq and Iran. With the incoming snowfall heading to the mountains in Washington, some of the local ski areas are hoping to open later this week.

“Think outside the box”. A common saying. Perhaps common enough to have lost some meaning by now. How often do we really “think outside the box”, extend beyond the barriers barring away our active imagination. How often do we think creatively, and how often should we? I suppose the overall encompassing question should be “why is creativity important”?

Creativity is usually associated with art, with imagination and the creation of things appealing to us. That is not incorrect. One could say that this is simply one form or use of creativity, yet this form is just as important as any other.

The making of an art piece or the composition of a piece of music does require an actively imaginative mind. is art not significant to our society? We love going to museums and concerts to see and listen to someone’s creations; we love seeing food presented in a beautiful arrangement.We would not be able to do those things without some measure of creativity.

I think we all have at least once come across a math problem that we stared at for seemingly hours without a clue as to how to solve it. And then all of a sudden we look at it in a different way, we craft our own path to finding the solution.

This is another form of creativity, though at first it may not have occurred to be such. I hear so many people complaining about how useless math classes are, how they will never serve any purpose in their futures...is that really true? When looking at the broader picture, math classes teach a very important skill and one that will most definitely be used often: finding solutions to problems using out-of-the-ordinary methods.

There are a few that may disregard the significance of thinking creatively but only because the concept itself is misunderstood. Logic and reason are both highly valued in today’s society.

Scientists and engineers are thought of highly but artists and musicians less so.

Of course logic is valued for good reason and it is also a very important skill. Due to creativity being seen of as a defining characteristic of an artist it might be undervalued some.

DEAR PHS STUDENTS, WELCOME TO COLLEGE

Once you have submitted your applications, you are not done yet.

1. Ensure all your paperwork got to the college.

Most colleges send an email clarifying what you have turned in and what you still need to turn in. You can also call the admissions office to ensure everything made it there.

2. Begin applying for scholarships.

There are multiple resources throughout the school to help with scholarships. There is a monthly scholarship bulletin that you can find on schoology or in the counseling office.

There is also a local scholarship application.

It is available Feb. 16 and due March 16.

3. Once you get accepted, consider your financial ability to go there.

FAFSA became available Oct. 1. Make sure you get it done as soon as possible so you know how much financial aid you can receive.

5. Follow instructions to choose your dorm and roomate and get involved in other activities.

Consider contacting your roommate to get to know them and plan who is going to bring what.

6. Many colleges offer a day where future students can go visit, meet other students and sometimes even get scholarships.

For example, WSU has an Experience WSU for new students and they offer $1,000 for students that attend.

7. Begin researching the university:

student life, classes available, AP scores they’ll accept, etc.

8. If you plan to get a job, begin looking into jobs near or on campus.

- Remember, National College Decision Day is May 1.

- There is one more SAT date this year, Dec 2. If you plan to apply to college, make sure you have taken the SAT at least once by this date.

In the excerpt above from the first verse we see the perspective of someone calling the suicide hotline and saying how they are feeling. We get to here and understand how the person in the song feels and how they feel as if their life doesn't matter. He stated in the song that loving people has left him alone but that he also has come to terms with the silence. He goes on to talk about how he has felt unloved and unwanted but in the end he realizes that he cannot hold it in forever and that he has been “silent for too long”. This song is one where the writer exposes himself and puts himself in a vulnerable state so that he can allow his audience to connect with him on an new and personal

The album opens with this loud, exhilarating punchline, reminding listeners that they are in fact, not ready for it. This sets the tone for the rest of the songs, calling out tabloids and members of society for tirelessly creating a false image of Swift over the past years.

There have been countless rumors of another Ed Sheeran collaboration and I was thrilled that they rang true.

This song is the most direct regarding her reputation and acknowledges that despite her continual feuds with other celebrities, she does not want that drama to define who she is.

This song reinforces Taylor’s image as a pop queen.

Its bitter verses reinstate how Swift has felt the past few

years, especially regarding drama with past friends and boyfriends. She described how, despite everyone claiming she was in the wrong, what she did felt so right.

This is easily one of the best songs on the album.

Although it is a very produced and edited pop song, her voice rings through in the chorus, giving us a taste of the old Swift. Swift told fans during one of her secret sessions (meet and greets) that all the love songs on the album are about her current boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, so the baby she references as her drug is presumably Alwyn.

Track five on Swift’s albums have a history of being emotional, lyrically strong and fan favorites, and this track did not disappoint. In the song, she discusses how fragile relationships can be, especially when in the public eye. The song pulls lyrics from the same creative place in Swift’s brain that created Mean, All Too Well and Clean, making it a standout song on the album.

This track shocked fans when it first came out in August. It was the first look into the album and set the tone for Swift’s new sound.

While it is not one of my favorites, it offers great dance parties and jam sessions on long car rides.

While Dress was rumored to have the most intimate lyrics, this song it definitely up there.

The ellipses have led to many fan theories about the general order of the album. The album opens with an ellipse in ...Ready For It? then close with one in So It Goes… Rumor has it that the first seven songs are about Swift’s reputation to society or media, while the last eight songs are about her true self. Look What You Made Me Do ends by saying the old Taylor is dead, which leads into this song and the theme of revival throughout the rest of the album.

This was my personal favorite of Swift’s advanced singles. Unlike the two songs previously

unveiled, this one had more chiming sounds and less rap-like verses. It tells the story of when Swift first met Alwyn, at his movie premiere in L.A. last November.

Another fan-favorite, this song makes me want to jump around with friends after a long day.

The song is presumably about ex-romance Tom Hiddleston but rather than just focusing on the break-up, she describes how she felt going into and during the relationship. It is another reminder that Swift’s love songs are not just dramatic break-up songs in which she plays the victim but meaningful and poetic ballads.

Unlike some of the more dark and vengeful songs, this one is more gushy and romantic. It creates a powerful image of how happy Swift is with Alwyn.

This track title alludes to how Swift feels in her relationship, or would feel, if her and Alwyn went public. They have kept largely out of sight over the year, to avoid criticism and paparazzi photos.

Although she loves her job and getting to perform for such large audiences, this song highlights the difficulties that come with being in the spotlight.

Likely the most ‘scandalous’ song Swift has ever produced, this song hints at special moments shared between Swift and a loved one. It is a fun and beautiful ballad that attests to Swift’s talent as writer, artist, musician and producer.

This is my current favorite track off the album due to its high energy, unique sound and amusing bridge. The song is a diss to Kanye West and the drama created after West released his song, Famous. As people of the internet would say, this song is a bop.

Of all the pre-released singles, this song is the most chill and relaxed. It is another romantic melody about Alwyn, another track that develops a happy and lovely secret relationship. To hear this song in its best element, listen to Swift’s acoustic cover on Saturday Night Live.

This is the song that makes me feel most at home with the album; it sends me back to old Swift songs, specifically during the Red album. It is a soft, piano ballad that pull at heartstrings while eliciting joy.

It talks about a boyfriend, presumably Alwyn, who stays past the New Year’s Eve kiss and helps picks up the pieces in the morning.

JEFFERS REFLECTS ON SEASON B Y A N DR E W F L U R Y ST A F F

ot only did PHS Vikings knock off the sixth-ranked Sumner High School football team Sept. 29, but Head Coach Gary Jeffers also received the Coach of the Week Honor from the Seattle Seahawks.

Jeffers has led his team to a league-best 9-1 record, securing a top spot for PHS in the playoffs.

“People were congratulating me about [the award] before I even knew I had gotten it,” Jeffers said. “It was a total shock and surprise for me but certainly it is an honor to be recognized by the NFL for the work that you are doing.”

In addition to the honor, the Seahawks awarded PHS with $500, which the ASB will use to help fund equipment and maintain facilities for the football team. Jeffers has already moved past the September honors and has his sights set on the post-season of South Puget Sound League football.

“Once you enter the playoffs, it is week to week and it is anyone’s game,” Jeffers said. “I always try to tell our kids that if we do not play our best, anyone can beat us. We just have to focus on our team, to be the best we can be. Everything J A I M E G O L D B E R G | V A N G U A R D else will take care of itself.”

The mentality appears to have paid off. Jeffers believes that the difference between the two years goes beyond the records.

“We made some changes on defense, scheme-wise and the guys have a greater of understanding and level of comfort with their positions,” Jeffers said. “But I have been doing this for 20 years; there is not much to change. We just have a group of really hardworking guys who are putting in the time and effort. They are talented football players and that helps. They are guys who are willing to work toward their goals.”

In early October Jeffers and his team were tested by Graham Kapowsin, down 21-3 in a fight for the top of the league.

More than anything else, Jeffers says he is proud of his team.

“Building teams is a very process and it does not always happen,” Jeffers said. “You can have a season where a group of young men don’t ever become a team, or you [can] have a group of young men that morph into a team, where they are all functioning in their part for the greater good of the whole. This group has achieved that and that is what is special. They have achieved ‘team’.”
