Experience provides insight

In 2014 I went on a trip that would change my life forever.

For most people, the firstout-of country experience is not going across the world to China.

But there I was, an incoming sophomore in high school, flying 12 hours across the globe to do service projects in Langfang China.

I went with my mom and 12 other teens and chaperones.

I did not really know what to expect when going. The media makes China out to

be scary but when we got there it was far from it.

I went to China with the idea that I am going to change someone’s life but what I did not know was the people and experiences I had were going to change mine.

We worked at Agape Life House in Langfang. That is an orphanage for children and teens with brittle bone disease.

The owner of the orphanage is an American man named Keith, one of the kindest men you would ever meet.

He has so much compassion and passion for what he does. He does not do what he does half heartedly.

Keith is such an inspiration to all who encounter him, including me.

We h e l p him clean an abandoned house and cleaned the The Bread of Life Bakery’s kitchen. We also become friends with some of the children and teens living there.

They are some of the happiest people I have ever met.

They do not let their disease get the best of them.

I bonded with a boy named Stephen the most.

He is so positive and showed that you can have an amazing time doing anything.

I consider him to be my older brother.

SWIMMER LEARNS FROM MISTAKE

All athletes have moments they will remember for a variety of reasons in their high school career but for Maddie Joy, one moment made her question the sport she loves.

B

y the time the Districts swim meet had rolled around, I was confident in my training and had high expectations to move on to the State meet. After enduring numerous, grueling MADDIE JOY practices, I was ready GUEST to take my sport to the next level.

As I walked up to the blocks for my first event, I could feel the blood rushing through my veins and heart pumping heavily in my chest.

I gripped the edge of my starting block and began to stretch my tensed muscles.

The nerves started to kick in.

Countless, useless questions popped into and out of my mind, attempting to tear my focus away from what was about to happen.

“Are my goggles on tight enough?”

“What if my cap rips?”

“I feel like my right arm hurts. Should I be worried?”

My friends and family tried to brighten my mood, but their attempts were no match for my stubbornness.

“You still have next year to get it,” they said.

However, my pessimistic brain ignored their cheerful attempts and I began to see my love for swimming going down the drain.

After a week of morosely questioning myself, I realized there was no reason I couldn’t use the defeat to motivate me for the next year.

Ever since that day, I have been training harder and getting stronger. As my season is just starting, I am confident in myself to reach my goals. Everyone has bad days. Mine happened to conveniently fall on a very important day of my life.

I have learned to become thankful for that depressing day of my past because without experiencing complete failure, I would not have gained the motivation to achieve ultimate success.

Swimming will always be my first love and true passion, and I believe in never giving up on things you love.

Pulitzer Prize winner and author of “To Kill a Mockingbird” Harper Lee has a new release on shelves that is stirring curiosity through the nation titled “Go Set a Watchmen.”

Lee’s recently released novel is set numerous years later when Scout, now known as Jean Louis, makes a homecoming to her hometown of Maycomb, AL. Resting in her hometown, new and old characters introduce themselves to Scout and reveal they are no longer the people Scout once saw them as before.

“Go Set a Watchmen” consistently elaborates on character development.

Uncovering the deeper layers to the once simple characters Jean Louise had loved and admired as a child. “Go Set a Watchmen” proved to be a challenging read even to someone who has thoroughly read its prequel in advance.

At best, Lee’s sequel brings new questions and revelations to old characters and shows readers how even heroes and pillars for rightful change are flawed and imperfect. For those that have not previously read its prequel, the plot, flashbacks and character development can create quite the challenging novel to follow. The novel delivers a story with a slow and confusing plot as well as a bland timeline of events that does not entice the reader in the same fashion as “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

‘Batman v Superman’ battle; audience loses REVIEW B Y

ometimes when a movie is created and executed poorly, reviewers liken the movie to watching a train wreck. In the case of “Batman v Superman,” a better metaphor would be watching a pile of garbage that is sitting on a train that is about to derail in slow motion.

To make this metaphor even more accurate, imagine if you fell asleep while watching this train with the pile of garbage, only to dream about a completely different train about to derail, then waking up to the same train completely and utterly confused. That is what watching “Batman v Superman” feels like.

Are you confused at all by that opening paragraph? If so, you just got your first frustrating taste of what it is like to watch the latest entry in the DC Cinematic Universe.

“Batman v Superman” is a series of loosely-connected scenes that include a really confusing scene that made no sense in context, several dream sequences that were not differentiated from normal scenes and a couple flashbacks. All of this is muddled even further by at least three different, yet competing, narratives that manage to fail to convey the characters of the movie accurately and adequately.

Now it should be said that “Batman v Superman” is not all bad. Most of it is bad but not all of the movie failed. The visuals in the movie are great, the action scenes feel well executed and Ben Affleck plays the role of Bruce Wayne (also known as Batman) superbly. Affleck is perhaps my favorite actor who has played Batman, even if I did not like the overall portrayal of the character in the movie.

One of the things that bothered me greatly was the way that the director (Zach Snyder) portrayed the characters of Batman and Superman. Batman is the most egregious offense because the director seemed to have missed an integral and well established part of the character. In

effect, he missed the last three movies and the last 77 years that the character has existed. Snyder completely ignored the whole drive and reason behind the way Batman operates in a way that feels jarring.

There are a couple scenes that feel like they get the character right, such as when Batman invents a host of gadgets to battle Superman and when he did some investigation. In the original comics, Batman is an inventor and the world’s greatest detective, yet no movie before “Batman v Superman” has portrayed either of those aspects. I am glad that this character at least has these integral aspects.

A similar misread of the character occurs with Superman. A character who is supposed to represent hope and what we can be as a society, is portrayed as a grim and uncaring character.
