Smarter Balance test for juniors clarified B Y

ith the start of the New Year, juniors were tasked with participating in a practice of the new Smarter Balance test (SBA).

During End of Course testing Jan. 21 and 23, juniors were assigned to rooms with computers to take the Math Interim Assessment, which is online.

This federal test will replace the state standardized tests of years past. The new test is called the Smarter Balance Assessment or SBA. The SBA is a junior level test that measures students college and career readiness.

Annette Burnett, on-time graduation specialist, helps students retrieve missing credits.

“There are differences in the Smarter Balance Test. There is an English, Language Arts test where it has students read research articles, answer research questions and write an essay. Much like the writing HSPE, it will give you a style of writing,” Burnett said. “There is a math piece that has a performance task, so you will learn the context of a problem, not answering based on content. Last year’s [math response] talked about how speeding tickets are made based on how fast you are going. The following questions would then be in regards to that context.”

The test will take place in a selected window this coming May. The SBA has some overlapping standards: you can pass either the SBA or the pre-existing standardized tests.

The class of 2016 has to pass the reading and writing HSPE or the SBA. The graduating classes of 2017 and 2018 the reading and writing HSPE will be replaced by the English and Language Arts SBA. In 2019 the SBA will replace the End of Course exam for math classes.

I personally, for lack of better words, hate New Year’s sounds suffocating. To be able to say that in one year you resolutions. Every other summer I try to take a trip down to the Bayou to visit my grandparents.

Now, you may be thinking of a Louisiana mud pit in the middle of the Deep South—but I am talking about the panhandle of Florida, where the sun shines onto the water and sand is permanently in-between your toes.

I am talking about fishing in the backyard and watching Fox News while drinking sweet tea. Although I tend to be a city person, not much more makes me happy than sitting on a dock waiting for crocodiles to swim by even if they are only 6-inches long.

Ok, to be honest I have yet to see a crocodile in the Bayou. But as I am kayaking down the still water into the bay, my mind wanders and imagines a lost arm or leg to a nasty beast. I remember paddling my way around the tall grass growing from the bottom of the slightly muddy pond, singing random blurbs of songs. Yes, it was completely inconsiderate of me to do because of the surroundings of small mansions and boathouses, yet I continued wailing because I thought it would scare the crocodiles away.

I would like to talk about the irony of the town in which my grandparents and the bayou resides. When I arrive I have to chuckle a bit. We drive from the Panama City airport and here we are, driving by the sign that reads: “Welcome to Lynn Haven.” My last name is Lynn and I am visiting Jeff, Katherine and Kristen Lynn. If I were to follow the standards of last name town living, I would move to Lynnwood.

I think it is a valid point to make that I am a very pale person, so imagining me on a beach in Florida may be frightening—like a ray of sun. When I visit Florida I pack multiple tubes of sunscreen, yet sometimes I goof and forget to apply in on my legs or other necessary places. The day I blanked about sunscreen was the day we were out on the boat fishing. I am so much of a cat person, the only thing I could catch was a few catfish. Anyways, I looked like a cross between a tomato and PeptoBismol.

My sunburns got severely worse each day. Yet I continued on my journey of attempting to swim and tan, obviously the tanning portion did not work out as planned.

My grandpa loves to swim. At his old house he had a long lap pool and I used

to sit eating turkey sandwiches.

I remember telling my grandma, “I like mayonnaise on my turkey s a n d w i c h e s.”

T u r k e y sandwiches have nothing to do with swimming SAMI LY NN but sometimes you are left with P R I N T E D I T O R odd memories that just have to be shared. The point of this is I used to watch my grandpa swim and want to hop in without my floaties.

My goal of willingly hopping in a pool without my nose pinched closed continued for quite a few years until my sophomore year of high school. I thought it would be good for me to start my high school experience by facing my fear of drowning and flailing my arms in the water. So I joined the swim team. I would say it was a triumph, winning rookie of the year at the end and making friends that I will remember forever. I owe this all to my grandpa, for wearing his funny swim trunks and laughing at me when I jumped in the pool, trying to grab the bean bags at the bottom.

The good thing about joining a swim team in such a rainy place is that all of the pools are inside so the anxiety about sun burns is non-existent.

It was one of my last nights in Lynn Haven, I was still sunburnt and my grandparents, my aunt and I were sitting by the fire looking out over the Bayou.

You could hear crickets and weird insects chirping. Then we hear a big splash by the boat dock, I immediately thought “CROCODILE!!”

Turns out that the big splash was an old dog that had been suck in the swamp. We worked together to help the chocolate lab up the boat dock’s stars and fed him. Later on that night, we got a call from the neighbor with the great news that it was their dog who is afraid of thunder. It was thundering the other night and that was when the dog hopped over the fence and became lost in the mucky water.

We all felt accomplished after helping save the dog.

I have many fond memories spent at the Bayou; including sipping sweet tea, saving old dogs from the mud and unforgettable conversations with my grandparents.

Warm climates inspire memories

e all have wacky family members. Those eccentric and overall bizarre people whom we hold dear to our hearts. Or, if your family is like mine, the whole lot of them are…different.

The blend of European ancestry paired with the quirks that come with being raised in Montana, Alaska or Washington creates a breed of people unprecedented to this earth.

Being raised right outside of the “big city,” I have always tried to pretend that I was some sort of urban-reared child.

While Puyallup is pretty urban, there is always the twang of farm in the air. Little did I know or believe, that twang was P. F A I R B A N K S also in my blood. When I was young, I had never even been CHIEF fishing, not even in the esteemed Puyallup River.

That all changed six years ago when I went to Alaska for the first time. At first, leaving the familiar landscape and people I know for the first time was pretty terrifying. I truly did not know what to expect. I was a “city boy,” or so I thought.

When you think of Alaska you imagine brisk air, dense forests, moose, fishing— and it is exactly as you imagine it.

Upon arriving in Anchorage, my grizzly bear of a grandfather met my brother and me at the gate. As you walk deeper into the airport you realize that you are not in Washington anymore. The airport is decorated with many Alaskan catches: fish, bear and moose line the walls and are posed in decorative glass display boxes.

As you look outside it seems that the mountains are nearer and larger than you have ever seen them.

After a quick stop at my grandparent’s home, we began a three-hour drive to his cabin in the small town of Kenai. The trees are different, frostbitten, they seem smaller in Alaska. While in stark contrast, the mountains and rivers, the wildlife, even the people—everything seems larger.

The lines between the wild and urban are blurred there.

Living between Alaska, Montana and Washington, my grandparents were instilled with different, more rural behaviors and point of views. Ideals they passed to their children and eventually their grandchildren.

Alaskans are a different type of people. If you ask one, they are never wrong.

Alaskans refer to anyone younger than them as “youngster.” Hunting and fishing is just a way of life in the Land of the Midnight Sun. During the summer, it really does stay light outside all day and nearly all night.

This provides Alaskans with ample an opportunity for fishing, hunting and other jobs that need to be completed before the snow comes. And even through the everdark winters, Alaskans continue to work hard.

It is not a place for the faint of heart.

Because of the tough winters, hardworking spirit and rugged landscape, Alaskans can seem distant and even rude at times. But once you see underneath the grizzly outer shell, Alaskans are (generally) kind-hearted teddy bears.

Though I like to pretend I am a city boy, over a few trips to the Last Frontier I have slowly come to terms with my more rural heritage. I have grown to love 3 a.m. wakeups, the constant light, boat stories, clean air and hands covered in fish slime.

For all of these things equate to a productive day.

Upon returning home I realized that a strong work ethic transcends to more than just fishing and doing chores for my grandparents; a strong work ethic can be applied to school, work, music—everything I do.

Most of all I realized that family does not define a person. I highly recommend breaking comfort zones and walking in the footsteps of another. You might find the lives of others to be something that you can relate to and enjoy—becoming a better and truer self.

BILLINGSLY: LIFE AFTER BABY

For senior Laura (Wilson) Billingsly her sense of normal has changed. After learning her junior year that she was pregnant and having her baby in October, Billingsly works to balance her baby, school and life.

The concept of college can as ominous as a black abyss of uncertainty. Most incoming freshmen would rather square up against a ferocious tiger than be forced to tackle the mountain of nightmares that is made up of finals, student loans and the dreaded roommates.

Fortunately there have been generations and generations who have gone through the same experience to learn from.

A common theme among high school alumni is the idea that college is not always what it is made out to be.

Current freshman at Pacific Lutheran University Hailey Smoot comments on how her expectations of college life were altered.

Maybe you listened to a lot of Bon Iver when you were sad last winter and now “For Emma, Forever Ago” just reminds you of that one dreary December. But sometimes, music just sounds like something without having that prior connection being established.

In the case of the Vamps, their debut album “Meet the Vamps” definitely sounds like a warm California summer. It gives imagery of it being midnight in the middle of August, when bored teens are cruising down to the beaches in their convertibles for some warm water swimming and summer flings.

Britain—their adolescent and carefree chanting verses make them sound a bit like Grouplove (they did the song “Tongue Tied,” which was awfully present on the radio this summer) and thus the Vamps sound pretty American.

In fact, the music video for the album’s fourth single “Somebody to You”, which features former Disney star Demi Lovato, perfectly captures the vibe I get from them: they are four guys, either four boys trying to be men or four men trying to be boys, on a beach with their instruments. I know not why anyone would dare bring electric guitars to a beach but that is what they do in the video. I guess they are just so carefree and Californian and teen that they give not a single a care and are just going to run the risk of ruining their presumably expensive equipment in the salty water of the Pacific.

However we, the audience, do not actually know where the music video is set. It could be in Fiji for all I know and not California.

Regardless of the origin of the Vamps, their music has that catchy and slightly annoying quality timbre to it that makes radio stations love to play their songs to death. Just like there are made for TV movies, there are made for radio songs and this is the category under which I would put “Meet the Vamps.”

The music is fun to sing along to; this is undeniable. The chorus from the track “Girls on TV” “She got legs like Beyoncé / Give me the eye like Rihanna / I wanna put her on camera / ‘Cause she drives me crazy, crazy, crazy” has an upwards-lilting tune that makes it the kind of chorus you scream really, really loudly and really, really horribly.

Of course, the Vamps are fun and easy to sing along to because their songs tend to have a simple structure of a mumbled intro that crescendos into a chorus, singing another verse and then repeating the chorus another three or four or five times. Sometimes they mix it up by stripping the instruments away and having that raw sound of shouting with a basic backing of a bass drum. Other than that, the music is repetitive.

Every single song on the album has an almost whiny “girl you are so beautiful, please love me” quality to it.

This characteristic can be cute. It really can be. Sometimes.

When used in moderation. But I guess the Vamps do not care about moderation. By the eighth track, “Wild Heart,” my eyes were rolling so hard I saw stars and maybe even God. The Vamps have no unique quality that sets them apart from the hundreds of other boy bands looking for fame and fortune. They have a sound that is easily replicated and just as easily forgotten. With that being said, “Meet the Vamps” is not a bad album. But it is also not that good. It loveable mediocrity is found in many other boy bands and is like a ham sandwich that has been left out on the counter for an indeterminate amount of time: I would probably not willingly consume it but if there is nothing else, I might.

istory is a story to be told as accurately as it happened. You must be able to view it through your eyes and relive the experience. I watched the movie “Selma” directed by Ava DuVernay. The movie about Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was released on Dec. 25 2014.

The movie was very emotional and in some moments hard to follow but it accurately portrayed the life of Dr. King Jr. This story follows David Oyelowo as Dr. King Jr. in the years 1964-65 as he is trying to eliminate the discrimination in the South so that black registers can vote. In order to do so he plans to lead a march from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, Alabama.

This movie does a good job of establishing the differences between non-violent civil rights activist and those of a more militant approach such as Malcom X. This in turn creates a conflict between the ideals of peaceful activists and militants impacting the overall view of African Americans as a whole.

While Malcom X is in the movie he is only briefly shown. There was a descriptive elaboration on their relationship but it lacked a face to face confrontation between the two characters and their opposing ideals.

Dr. King Jr. is also faces conflict with the President of the United States who at the time was Lyndon B. Johnson who is played by Tom Wilkinson.

Johnson and Dr. King Jr. have a very complicated relationship.

While they seem to be friends, President Johnson just likes Dr. King Jr. more than the other civil rights activist like Malcom X. Dr. King Jr., as peaceful and polite as he is, slowly loses respect for the president the longer Johnson waits to pass a bill to protect black voters. Wilkinson does a good job of showing Johnson’s emotion towards Dr. King Jr. along with providing a good conflict for him.

One of the best qualities of the movie was the characters’ development.

Each character is there for a specific reason in the movie and has a certain relation to the conflict of the movie.

While we may not know the reason right away, we learn throughout the movie why each character is there by appealing to the pathos of each character.

While Dr. King Jr. was well known and respected, there were still others that did not respect him or want his help. Some people had trouble accepting his help and what he wanted to do for people.

This movie would be hard to follow if someone did not know the history of Dr.King Jr. but does a great job of showing just how dangerous protesting and marching for civil rights could be for anyone, including white people.

The movie establishes an emotionally serious tone in the beginning of the movie. The mood is lightened for a series of scenes only to break you down in tears immediately after.

There was some controversy about this movie being rated PG-13 due to the brutality and explicit content in the movie. Critics have said this movie is too violent and had too much foul language for the movie not to be rated R. However, I feel that the movie needed this edge to recreate the feeling and emotion during the time in which the movie takes place.

The movie was meant to be informative for all people, young and old; keeping the PG-13 rating allowed this to happen.

In all, this is a great movie, I recommend going to see it but make sure you have tissues with you.

Last year, I lost in the finals 5-4 to the state champ from the previous year. However, I have a feeling this year is going to be different.”
