Swine flu frenzy caused alarm

Worries regarding sickness cause unnecessary panic throughout the country. Administrators and professionals advise universal precautions and staying home when ill.

Swine flu, a variation of the H1n1 virus, has recently begun infecting people around the world, including students in the puyallup School district.

Swine flu is a contagious respiratory disease caused by a type-a influenza virus that affects pigs.

Scientists predict that if we don’t do anything technology, but at what price? global warming, greenhouse gases, pollution, climate within the next 50 years, the poles will be no more. all the change: it is all the same and it is destroying our planet. costal cities like manhattan and Shanghai will be under the release of carbon dioxide (cO2) in our environment water. that iS in our lifetime. it iS that bad. you may also be thinking “What can i do about it? i’m is devastating.

s i sat in class writing out my Spanish vocabulary with english translations, someone shouts out “UgH! i lost “the game” followed by a series of moans, groans and a few under-their-breath swears. the teacher quieted the class, but i could not get to work again because, darn it, i just lost the g ame.

For the few readers who don’t know what the game is, here are the rules. Rule one: if you think about the game you lose the game. Rule two: you’re now playing the game. Rule three: you have 30 minutes to forget about c. Odem RePORteR the game before you lose. Rule four: upon losing the game, you must announce that you have in fact, lost the game and rule five: every time you lose the game you have five minutes to forget about the game. the game for lack of a better term is stupid. this game is literally a game of nothing.

When you start playing there is no backing out and every five seconds someone yells out “dang it! i lost the game!” i get so annoyed.

On top of it all, the game is written everywhere: on desks, on posters; it is just everywhere. the absolute worst part about the game is you can never win. all you can do is lose and this happens a lot. the only reason that people play the game is to annoy other people or because they have nothing better to do. in high school annoying people is all that’s needed for the game to become popular. if it were not for people getting upset over losing the game no one would play; it would be forgotten. i will say this about the game, students have thought of some clever ways to make other students lose.

For example, there was a poster on the second floor hall reading, “buy japanese drink thingies” and on the bottom of the poster it said “you lost the game.” there is also a good one on a poster in the stairwell by the choir room that said “don’t let the fear of striking you out keep you from playing the game,” the game is circled with an arrow pointing at it. the one that surprised me the most was when i was in disneyland on a band trip. i was waiting in line to the california Screamer and written on the rail of the waiting line was, “you lost the game.” this means it’s not just Puyallup High School; the game has gone nationwide. there i was sitting in Spanish, pencil in hand. i couldn’t concentrate. i couldn’t stop thinking about it and i couldn’t even think of any thing reasons why the game is stupid.

However i am trapped in the game like so many other students. there is nothing else to do but conform and lose the game!

Swine flu overdramatized

Pork fever! the pink death! the snorting sickness! it’s swine flu! the next deadly disease to attack the human race, it’s the black death, but from pigs! Well, not quite. it’s more of the normal seasonal flu… but from pigs. in reality, the swine flu isn’t that big of a deal, just the poor victim of our national media blowing it out of proportion and human fear overcoming, well, common sense. i’ve heard a lot of buzz over this sickness craze, i’ve heard a lot of news stations reporting stories resembling: “the First death of the deadly Swine Flu,” i’ve actually heard a few children asking their mommies “is it… is it coming for us?” c’mon people, swine flu is the seasonal flu, but without a vaccine. So if you’re accustomed to dying from the seasonal flu then you need to worry, but if you’re like me where you get a headache, sleepy, runny nose for a couple days then no real need to worry.

Of course it’s somewhat dangerous, but only because we have no vaccine.

common sense. there’s nothing wrong with sharing your food—you may want to be a little careful if your buddy has a runny nose, is sneezing all over the place, and has grown a snout complimented by a little curly pink tail on his rear-end—but common sense is more important than black and white safety precautions.

Finally, government closings on whole school districts because of one or two possible outbreaks, is a little too much. albeit we may be taking a bit of a risk here but we could get away with half days right? it’s just a shame to see that protest can’t stop a school district but a blown-out-ofproportion sickness craze can, but hey, watcha gonna do? and honestly! Who’s protecting the pigs? they are being terribly wronged here, i mean just because of them being the host to a human disease doesn’t mean we need to kill them all does it? Well maybe it does but i’m not here to argue that.

Whatever you do, be careful, but remember not to let your fear of the unknown get in the way of the people you love or the things you love to do.

this to us, it’s their job to tell us what’s up with things isn’t it? this is a blatant example of how they’ve made a mountain out of a mud mound, a dirty, piggy, muddy mud mound. i ventured on some research, which i found the first death from swine flu in the United States was a toddler. g. WeStOn it’s a shame he RePORteR died, don’t get me wrong, but understand that the two most affected demographics for the seasonal flu are elderly folks and… you got it! toddlers! this is a fact i felt the news kept from me in order to get more views, the more hype, the more people tuning in right? bleh. i’m also quite tired of these signs telling us not to share food or drink. life or death decision: share food and possibly (but not likely) get sick, or starve. your call. but in all honesty i think we should be promoting

Gas prices continue to plague consumers B y

as prices today have many people staying in, driving less and spending more on gasoline.

Washington’s average for regular gasoline is $2.66 a gallon. With kids having school, sports and friends, paying to fill up the tank can get difficult and even finding a gas station within price range may result in toning down some activities.

“About seven months ago, it only cost about $20. Now when I fill it up most of the way it ranges anywhere from $22-$26,” sophomore Kelli Imhof said.

Chris Bevier, also a sophomore, got his license recently and says he is paying a lot for gas every few weeks.

“I drive a 2000 Chevy Suburban and I’ll pay about $60 every two weeks,” Bevier said.

Gas mileage can be improved by 3.3 percent by keeping the tires to the vehicle inflated to the proper pressure.

Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer, according to American Petroleum Institute.

“I’ve never checked my tires. I guess now that I know it could help I probably should,” Bevier said.

Both teens say that gas hasn’t affected their daily activities.

Imhof says she’s been doing even more activities than before.

“I have been able to do a lot more with friends and be able to go places when I need,” Imhof said. “I guess you could say I don’t spend as much as I used to at home anymore and I do a lot more running around for my family.”

“I kind of just do what I need to do. I’m not all that concerned with how much gas I use,” Bevier said.

With prices fluctuating, some people don’t even bother filling up all the way.

“I think it’s because they’re hoping the prices will go down, if they wait then it might,” Carol Turk said.

Businesses on busier streets are doing a little bit better than those who aren’t.

“I think it definitely helps [being on a busy street]. If we were on a deserted street we wouldn’t have any business,” Turk said.

Gas station businesses have been hit hard by the high prices and fewer customers.

“Business is down probably 5 percent,” the manager at Meridian Chevron, Carol Turk said.

Drivers who stick to a certain gas chain may even have snag a bonus.

“I go to the Safeway gas station. My mom has a rewards card there and we can get up to 20 cents a gallon off,” Bevier said.

Shell gas stations also offer a different kind of Nitrogen Enriched Cleaning System in their gasoline, which helps clean and get rid of carbon deposits.

Imhof seems to notice the beneficial difference.

“I don’t have a specific place I go to every time, but I really like to go to Shell, just don’t ask me why,” Imhoff said.

“McDonald’s is a good first job,” manager heather fox said. “It gives [high school students] a first experience out in the work force.”

In order to get a job, fox said that someone who is searching for a job needs to fill out an application online or in the store. If the applicant meets the requirements, the manager then calls for an interview.

“I heard value village has a plethora of really scary hawaiian shirts, so I must go there,” drama and science teacher PJ Sirl said.

Most thrift stores work with charities too.

Eighty-four percent of Goodwill’s profits are put towards their Career Services Program.

“We pay charities for everything that’s donated,” frost said. “We work with the charities Arc of Washington and Gateways.”

There is one thing that people can agree on though. “you can get brand name things and things that are like new for little cost,” Ashbrook said. “It’s like treasure hunting.”

So next time you’re about to buy a pair of jeans for $25, just think of how many pairs of jeans you can get at a thrift store for the same price.

“I qualified as an employee because I went through the whole hiring process and now I get a paycheck from corporate for my services. I have a clock-in number and a fancy uniform,” Bubnich said.

Qualifications employers look for in potential employees are being a good team player, having a great attitude, having lots of smiles, dependability and a good gradepoint average. The employers also look at the activities the employees are involved in, according to fox.

“Good qualities for an employee involve coming to work on time every day, knowing how to get the job done and always being ready to work without hesitation,” sophomore Michael Kurkov said.

Does the current economy limit the availability of jobs for high school students?

isn’t hiring as much, but the chances of a high school student getting a job over an adult are still high.

“We would hire a high school student over an adult any day because they are more available for our schedule and can work part time,” fox said.

There are advantages and disadvantages to getting a job while in high school.

“It teaches [high school students] responsibility, how to manage time, prepares students for life after high school, as well as giving students an opportunity to earn money after school and on weekends,” Kurkov said. “however, students need to focus on schoolwork more than on a job because while in high school, school work should always come first. you should only get a job if you have the time for it, unlike me.”

Velveteen Rabbit: behind the scenes

On stage actors and actresses become someone totally different, but what you see on stage is only half of what it takes to make a play come alive.

he room is hot. It smells like hairspray and energy is buzzing in the air.

The makeup lights click as they are turned on.

As senior Nichole Gunia puts on her makeup, her reflection is shown 20 times over in the mirrors lining both sides of the room. She is making herself look like an old woman.

As the 13 cast members come into the tiny makeup room, a room that few even know is there, the room gets louder, hotter and more and more reflections appear.

When the cast enters the room they are normal teenagers, but when they leave they have each assumed a new persona—a toy, an animal, a senile old lady.

This was the scene Thursday, May 14 in the afternoon. It was opening night, but the cast performed earlier that day for over 650 elementary students. The elementary students were treated to an early performance because it was the annual children’s play: The “Velveteen Rabbit.”

Most of the cast played toys because the story is about a velveteen rabbit that becomes a real rabbit. Some of the actors played humans: a little boy, a doctor and a grandmother. There were even a few real rabbits. The cast had to look back on their childhoods to prepare for their characters.

“I modeled a lot of my character after a child,” junior Mike West said as he put a painted a white mouth on his face for his

role as the Velveteen Rabbit.

For many in the cast, portraying a child was a common theme. Junior Aaron Berryhill portrayed Alex, the boy who owns the Velveteen Rabbit. Berryhill had to take on the personality of a young child.

“To be a young, boyish character you have to erase your [life] experience,” Berryhill said.

For others in the cast, playing the part of a child, like Berryhill, or a character that acts like a child, was just part of the fun.

“I just tried to have as much fun as I could have,” junior Lauren Anderson said.

“I tried not to take it too seriously and act like a child.”

Being in the play is more than just something to do after school every day of the week for three months, or more if you get into more than one play. It’s the best thing you can do for yourself, according to Anderson.

“I spent every single day this year after school with these people,” Anderson said. “There wasn’t a day that I didn’t almost die from laughing.”

Having a laugh, crying and making friends are all a part of drama, according to senior Laura Vitale who played Bulka, the rag puppy.

“I’ve had a really good experience in drama. I’ve made a lot of friends and had a lot of laughs,” Vitale said.

The cast is made up of friends.

“In every show I’ve had a best friend. I think that’s what theater’s about,” Gunia said.

The relationships that were made throughout the play has been some of her favorite aspects of being in drama, according to junior Heather Nelson who played the Toy Fairy.

“My favorite part is building relationships and having fun on stage,” Nelson said.

The cast isn’t just a group of kids who get together to do something they love, it’s more than that, according to Anderson.

“My best friend’s here,” Anderson said.

“My family’s here.”

The cast may be a family, but what they really like is the reward. The reward being the audience reacting well to their performance, according to Nelson.

“I love getting applause after we worked so hard,” Nelson said.

Some of the cast used the audience to enhance their performances.

“You get this amazing feeling when you’re on stage. You can feel the energy from the audience,” Vitale said.

Being on the stage a person can be any character they want to be. With the cast, they can be anyone, whoever that is you are, according to Anderson.

“It’s one place where I can truly be myself. I do it because of the people it attracts,” Anderson said.

The people and the way people act in drama is what draws some people to it, and that is what many like about it, according to Berryhill.

“I love the environment that the theater instills on people,” Berryhill said.

The only other ingredients are lettuce, a chicken patty and the bun.

But to my surprise if you’re counting calories a Mcchicken has 60 more calories than a cheeseburger from Mcdonalds.

Jack in the Box is exactly that, they have anything from tacos to teriyaki bowls. i am kind of boring so i chose a Jumbo Jack with cheese. under the sesame seed bun is a beef patty topped with two slices of american cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, chopped onions, mayo-onion sauce and ketchup which has a whopping 660 calories. i still don’t feel too bad as long as i give the last half to whoever else is in the car. Following that i’ll dive into a monster taco, each of these are only 157 calories. . i recommend the one across from the Puyallup Fair; their food has always been a lot fresher and the people there are usually way friendlier. i stick to water!

Sonic is a new restaurant to Washington.

They are known for their giant burgers and delicious slushies drinks. The menu is huge and everything on it sounds amazing.

Sonic restaurant started in the Eastern United States and now has come to us. Every month they add something new to the menu and this months item is the new SONIC Blast made with Snickers.

The brand new restaurant looked adorable.

It was kind of small but very clean and shiny.

The service was excellent. There was only a 10 minute wait until we got a stall. The waiter was

as kind as possible and very quick to serve us.

We got our food within minutes of ordering it.

It was fresh, hot and very tasty.

There wasn’t really anything that was wrong with the restaurant. The chili cheese tots were kind of different, but it’s good to try new things.

There were a lot of people there but it wasn’t too crowded.

Everyone needs to try out this new place.

It’s fast, good and cheap. For a full meal for two people it only cost $18. That includes a hamburger, a side and a drink. When you go to the restaurant you must try the wonderful onion rings. They are sweet and just melt in your mouth. The Sonic is sure to be the new McDonalds.

ntil the late 1930s, america favored pale skin, according to Jeffrey newman, Ph.d. in dermatology. Pale skin represented class and beauty; women would be gloved and carry umbrellas outside to prevent a tan. The lower class were often field workers and their dark skin was a sign of poverty. Being tan decades ago was not by choice but a result of a days work. “now things have drastically changed,” newman said.

When commercial air travel was born so was the trend of tanning. Those who could afford to fly out for vacations wore their money on their skin, in the form of a tan. Since then, tan skin has been the preferred skin tone. a tan body may be desirable to most, but the effects are definitely not. The trend of teen tanning is rapidly increasing but the awareness is not. how much are you willing to sacrifice to boost your confidence? “ultra-violet (uV) light in tanning beds are concentrated rays used to create a quicker tan,” newman said. “But this causes greater damage.”

Tanning has many effects on skin, both those visible and not. “regular tanning often results in thinning of the skin, creating a crate paper look to it. This also shows your blood vessels more prominently, which is easily seen on the face. uneven skin pigmentation showing a spotted appearance is most common on the face, arms and hands,” newman said.

These symptoms are not easy to eliminate, according to newman.

“Treatments are offered such as bleaching creams to even skin tone. The more expensive and greater risk procedure includes laser skin treatments and skin peeling procedures,” newman said.

But the effects can be greater than what meets the eye. “uV light reduces skin immune responsiveness, causing further skin damage” newman said.

Skin cancer may be the most dangerous result of tanning. Skin cancer is a disease in which skin cells lose the ability to divide and grow normally. These abnormal skin cells can grow and form a mass or tumor.

These tumors or masses are considered cancers when it spreads to surrounding tissue or organs. “melanoma and other skin cancers could be the outcome of tanning,” new-

man said. melanoma is often deadly because it can spread to other parts of the body, and is responsible for three-fourths of all skin cancer.

“Tanning early in life heightens your risk for melanoma,” newman said. “Thos e who are diagnosed with melanoma at the earliest possible and given the best possible outcome, 10 percent will die from it with in the next 10 years.”

This fact had little effect on kalle miller, sophomore, who says she frequently tans. “it’s scary. But i seriously don’t think i’ll stop until i am diagnosed with cancer,” miller said. kaitlyn Bruno, a sophomore who has never used a tanning bed sees things differently. “it is silly to go bake yourself to change your appearance to something you’re not,” Bruno said. even with all of the risks people still

continue to tan. “i like being tan; i don’t want to be pasty looking. especially now that summer’s coming; got to wear shorts, got to tan.” miller said.

But tans fade.

The average tanner goes three to four times a week. Tans average about five dollars to seven dollars each. This is around a $100 a month in total according to tanning studios.

“Tanning is short-term satisfaction. The long term of it is premature skin aging, wrinkles and skin cancer,” Bruno said.

100 million people in america will be diagnosed with melanoma, which equates to approximately 12 people in Puyallup. yet Bruno understands the reasons people tan.

“People are never satisfied, always trying to find a way to change, make themselves better, to look like everyone else,” Bruno said.

The advice for a high school student differs. “if more people knew how serious tanning was and stopped relying on thinking that because so many people do it there has to be an easy way to treat it, then maybe less people would tan,” Bruno said.

The effects of tanning beds have hardly been seen because this is a moderately new trend to america and the age that will start showing the effects of tanning beds is a generation away. “i would say yeah tan, everybody does it. it’s good for your self confidence, it makes you feel better,” miller said. many frequent tanners say there is an addictive factor to tanning. “i tan about three times a week, but if i wait a couple of weeks and my tan fades i feel like i need to go again. Plus the beds are all warm and relaxing,” miller said.

College opportunities abound Frisbee provides friendship Many soon-to-be juniors and seniors are jumping into college early and taking Running Start next year.

you’re in high school now, and it’s almost the end of the year. college is coming around the corner, whether you’ll be a junior or a senior next year. you’ve got all the typical college worries running through your mind: going away for it and paying for it. many students are considering enrolling at Pierce community college for the running Start program, which can benefit them financially and give them a taste of college life.

Junior caroline lindsley is currently enrolled in two classes at Pierce, and has already taken four others. “running Start has so many benefits. of course taking off the time and cost of a university is a huge plus, but also the environment is so focused, but relaxed,” lindsley said.

Sarah Jordan, sophomore, plans on taking running Start during her junior and most likely senior year. “i’m planning on taking running Start because i think it would be beneficial when i’m trying to adjust to a college lifestyle,” Jordan said. “as opposed to being tossed out of my house into the open world after graduation.”

Teachers at Pierce don’t treat running Start kids like high school students, according to lindsley.

“They give you the same amount of re-

sponsibility [as the college students] and expect you to keep up on your work like an adult would,” lindsley said. “your grades are your responsibility, and in a sense, you are in college.”

Some students decide to go to Pierce because they feel a need to get away from the high school environment.

“There’s less drama. People are there to learn, and there’s not too many other motives,” lindsley said. “There are no popularity wars or extreme immaturity.” many families struggle to pay for college, and because taxpayers pay for running Start tuition, they look forward to the opportunity to save money. “you can save money. however, it depends on what college you’re going to, because some out-of-state colleges won’t accept credits from Pierce,” head counselor, lesley Baczuk said.

With all its benefits, running Start also has a few drawbacks. “having new classes every quarter is nice, but the teachers move at an extremely fast pace, so it can get difficult to keep up, but running Start’s pros outdo the cons,” lindsley said. despite all the hard work, after taking running Start, many students report that it was worthwhile.

“There are a lot of kids who go there for their junior year and really enjoy it. But then they really miss high school and decide to come back for their senior year,” Baczuk said.

Ultimate Frisbee gives members the opportunity to play popular sport at various local locations.

They come out on the clean grass field laughing and joking. They walk out in a straight line one of them is throwing a Frisbee. They walk on the field and started throwing the Frisbee when they separated in to two even teams, one team ran to the opposite side of the field raising their hand showing that they are ready. ultimate Frisbee (ultimate) is the fastest growing sport in high school and college, according to the ultimate Player association.

“The reason i like ultimate most is it’s a really good way to get out all of your bottled up energy,” sophomore mat nelson said.

There are many ways to get involved in ultimate. a portion of players play with the Puyallup high School ultimate Frisbee club.

The ultimate Frisbee club meets occasionally after school in elizabeth Blankenship’s room 218 where they discuses new teams; upcoming games and practices. “if you wanted to start playing ultimate Frisbee with the club the best way is to just come to one of the meetings and we will tell where to go to practice,” sophomore Tony Bostwick said.

There were 3.9 million people playing competitive ultimate in 2006. in

2007, that number climbed to 4 million; in 2008 there were 4.9 million ultimate players, according to cnBc. “i think more and more people are learning about ultimate Frisbee and they should,” nelson said.

The teams for the ultimate Frisbee club are usually decided in the beginning of the year, around September. There are around seven players on a team. “i would imagine there are over 20 and seven people a team so it’s a pretty big club,” Bostwick said.

Both groups of ultimate players play throughout Puyallup. The popular spots are Pioneer Park and decoursey.

“We really play wherever it’s easiest for people to get to which, is usually the park by Forza,” senior mason chapman said.

The ultimate Frisbee club is not the only way to play ultimate, a large number of people play non formal games or pick up games.

“The reason i choose to not play in the club is it can get more competitive just with friends,” chapman said.

People say the best way to start playing ultimate is with friends in local fields or in parks. “i actually started the summer of eighth grade, i remember that very well. i couldn’t throw a Frisbee for anything,” Bostwick said.

Boys volleyball tournament continues success in second year. Multiple teams competed, but it came down to sophomores versus seniors.

your heart is pumping and the smell of sweat is strong in your nostrils. you wait in a huddle with your team members for the announcer to call out your team’s name. excitement, fear and nerves are only a small portion of the emotions you’re feeling.

Finally, the announcer’s voice is heard over the roar of the crowd. you and your team march out onto the court ready to play.

There were six teams competing for the title of Volleyball champions may 14 at the boys volleyball tournament.

Three sophomore teams: The Brotherhood, The Finglesnorfs and dP; two junior teams: The allies and Team Jordan; and two senior teams: The Jerkz and The Swines. only one team was able to claim that title: The Jerkz, with a win of 19-17 over The Finglesnorfs. each game was played until one team made it to 15 points, or for 15 minutes, and the team with the highest score at the end would be the winner.
