STAFF EXPLORES MEMES M

emes. They affect daily life without even knowing it. From a political meme to a Vine, they mean more than just a laugh. This May, The Viking Vanguard wants to put an emphasis on how memes affect our society both positively and negatively. Memes have beneficially influenced people, giving them opportunities for fame, such as the recent success of the yodeling kid from Walmart, Mason Ramsey. He was able to live his dream through his memestatus, releasing his first single and performing in front of many crowds. Harmless laughs are made of memes, however are they really harmless? When do you know a meme has crossed the line?

The Tide Pod Challenge has been a controversial meme since it first came out in January 2018. The challenge itself is to eat a Tide Pod, which consists of laundry detergent and other chemicals that can be lethal.

WE HOPE THAT STUDENTS CAN FIND POSITIVITY BOTH ON CAMPUS AND ON SOCIAL MEDIA. OU R V I E W

Now in some stores, because of the meme, Tide Pods are locked up, needing an employee to unlock it for them. Memes such as this condone self-inflicting pain. Viewers of this are becoming desensitized to these types of

memes and they are becoming the social norm. With the recent fights at PHS, memes have surfaced that have negatively touched the people involved. They may be made just for a joke, yet they leave a lasting impression to those who they are at the expense of. The Viking Vanguard hopes students at PHS are mindful of the consequences that memes can create. We hope that students can find positivity both on campus and on social media. That those at PHS realize that they can have a negative effect on the people involved and that memes are more than just a laugh.

Fruit is a refreshing snack. It contains vitamins that are beneficial to your health. Some good summer fruits are berries, peaches, apricots, nectarines, plums, melons, mangoes, lychee nuts and fresh figs. You may also be able to find these at the farmers market Saturday mornings. Smoothies are a healthy and delicious drink for summer activities. There are many ways to make a smoothie but its main ingredients normally include yogurt, fruit and ice. You could also mix in a multitude of items, depending on what you like to eat.

Fashion

Summer is a great time to find a job because you are out of school and have more time on your hands. A job is a way to make a little extra cash. If you like water and being around a multitude of people, Wild Waves is a great place to work. There are many different jobs to apply for including a lifeguard. https://www.wildwaves. com/jobs.php The YMCA is also a great place to work if you like being around people. There are many areas to work in, like the daycare center if you are good with kids. You can apply for a job or to become a volunteer. This could help you achieve the 20 hour graduation requirement for community service. Job: https://www.ymcapkc.org/about-us/work-with-us/apply/ Volunteer: https://www.ymcapkc.org/programs-classes/volunteer/ A great way to stay involved in summer activities is working at a summer camp. This can allow you to participate in fun activities and befriend new people. You can even travel to other states to be a counselor or a volunteer.

Food

While it may be tempting to eat out frequently during the summer, your wallet may suffer as a result. There are some inexpensive places to eat out around Puyallup however. One of my favorites is Taqueria Los Amigos, also known as the Taco Bus. With several deals all under $10, it is a great place to get Mexican food. Another place to go is Dairy Freeze in Sumner. With shakes ranging from $3-$5, this is a great place to grab some ice cream.

Fitness

One of the most fun and budget-friendly ways to shop is thrifting. With some searching and patience, you can find some amazing clothes that you would not be able find in stores, all for a good price. The best things to look for are fun T-shirts, sweaters and jackets, the best of which are usually found in the men’s section. Some great places to look are the Value Village on River Road or UrbanXchange in Tacoma.

To keep up the “ideal summer bod,” some physical activity is recommended. Yoga is a combination of exercise and balance. This is a fun experience for old or newcomers to become or stay flexible and get a workout. Going on a run outdoors is a great way to get your cardio in. This will help improve your stamina while getting some fresh air in nature. Some good places to go on a jog in Puyallup are Clark’s Creek Park and Bradley Lake Park. Going swimming is fun to do with friends and also works out your muscles. This cools you off on hot summer days while getting or maintaining muscle definition.

n his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins described a meme as a “self-reproducing” cultural idea shared between organisms. Today, the word meme has transcended its original definition, becoming a dominant impact on American society. Many encounter some sort of meme every single day. Log on to Twitter, Instagram or Facebook and you are guaranteed to see that day’s viral sensation. These memes however, go further than just being something funny to laugh at. In the 2016 presidential race, memes played a significant role. Both the campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump “embraced certain memes as a shorthand way to share inside jokes with supporters, spread campaign messages or deliver rhetorical gut punches to their opponent, while distancing themselves from the most hateful [memes],” according to technology and media journalist Dawn Chmielewski, writer for USA Today. These ranged from Clinton tweeting Trump to “delete his account” to Trump attributing nicknames such as “Lyin’ Ted” or “Crooked Hillary” to his opponents. The “memed” nature of the election was not just embraced by the candidates, spreading to much of society. Memes that accused Ted Cruz of being the infamous Zodiac Killer, mocked Jeb Bush’s plea for applause and detailed Bernie Sanders’ encounter with a bird were spread across the Internet. But not every meme was as relatively harmless as these. Alt-Right, white supremacy groups used memes as a way to form alliances and start “meme warfare,” a term first contrived by social change activist Andrew Boyd. Jeff Giesea, a contributor of the Defense Strategic Communications Journal issued by the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence, defines memetic warfare as “competition over narrative, ideas and social control in a social-media battlefield.” According to Giesea, memetic warfare could also be viewed as a form of psychological warfare, also known as propaganda. In the case of these alt-right groups, meme warfare has been

Dr. Phil, Breg One of their most prominent feats was turning the once making a car innocent meme of Pepe the frog into a symbol of antisemitism and white supremacy, eventually landing it on the AntiDefamation League’s list of hate symbols. Memes have had an objectively negative effect on our culture, specifically on younger generations. Growing up in the Internet age has made memes accessible at all times. But when the subject of these memes are inherently harmful, what does that say about the millennial generation? Tide Pods, bleach and other memes all surrounding the topic of J E F F GI E SE A killing oneself are some of the most CON T R I BU TOR frequent memes made today. But why does this generation joke And these about killing themselves so often and with such little just as much remorse? response wou According to writer Deidre Olsen, this trend reflects the generation as a whole -- cynical and rebellious. These memes are simply a reflection of their worldview, one that views the world as glass half empty. They are a way to cope with their misplace in society; almost cathartic in a way, says Olsen. Memes are a way of escapism: “A way to collectively disengage from the unending horror of politics by laughing at meaningless internet jokes that mirror the nonsensical global state of affairs,” as defined by Olsen. However, this view is met with some controversy. Should memes about 9/11, mass shootings, terrorist groups or natural disasters be categorized under the escapism umbrella or do they point to another trend? Some have argued that such memes have contributed to the desentization of society, minimizing the tragedies and victims the jokes are at the expense of. A study from the University of Michigan DE I DR E OL SE N found that today’s college W R I T E R students are 40 percent less empathetic than their counterparts from 20 and 30 years ago, which could be a testament to recent meme culture. Nevertheless, memes can have an arguably positive effect on society as well. Mason Ramsey knows this well. Going from “the yodeling kid from Walmart” to performing on stage at Coachella, Ramsey’s meme status propelled him into the spotlight, effectively giving him the opportunity to live out his dreams. Another example of this is Danielle Bregoli, or the “cash me

Azealia Banks recently verbally attacked Cardi B on the interview show The Breakfast Club. Banks called Cardi a “carticure of a black women” and said she changed the progressive conversation about AfricanAmerican women into an exaggeration of their personalities: “There was just this really, really, really intelligent conversation going on nationally and then everything just kind of changed and then it was like Cardi B,” Azealia Banks said. Cardi responded by saying that, “I never asked to be a example or a role model I do not want to change my ways because I am famous that is why I just mind my business,”. After a few comments from Cardi, the rapper sensation deleted her Instagram account and then set her Twitter to private, saying she just wants to enjoy her privacy.

Kanye West has been exhibiting some odd behavior in this past month, showcased on his Twitter and in certain interviews. West has been openly speaking about his support of President Donald Trump, this display causing backlashes from many fans. West also went on TMZ and made the statement “slavery was a choice,” which set into motion a conversation across the internet, many calling into question West’s mental health. Quite a few celebrities have joined the conversation, some defending West, this including John Mayer and Christina Aguilera. Aguilera openly commented she believes West is a “good guy at heart.” West’s behavior leaves many in high anticipation for his upcoming album, which is why some speculate this is all a warped promotion to gather hype around West’s new music.

Beers and Bentleys had some songs I did not enjoy such as “Steal my Night” because I did not like the beat and none of the lyrics really stuck out to me. “Steal my Night” was kind of plain and it sounded like mostly all of the older songs he had. Rapper Meek Mill was released from prison April 24. Mill’s sentencing struck up a conversation in the media on whether any aspect of the case was fair due to almost all of the factors of the case were called into question. The initial term of Mill’s probation lasted 11 years, which some claimed was too long. After that, there was a discrepancy as to whether the judge was biased or not. The overall noise surrounding Mill’s case eventually led to his release from the state prison. It was reported that Mill was allegedly in contact with exfiancé and rapper, Nicki Minaj, after being released.

New artist Trippie Redd is on the rise into the mainstream community and he is dropping new music soon which many are excited for. Redd recently reignited his beef with popular rapper XXXTentacion. There has been a scuff with the two musicians and it was reported that is was squashed, however, Redd has called XXXTentacion out for not only stealing his style but stealing Ski Mask The Slump God’s style. When comparing X’s first album to his second you can see a considerable difference to it which Redd claims is Redd said because of him and Ski Mask The Slump God’s.

The beat was different than most other rap songs because of the retro slow beat. I also liked that the chorus had a flow to it and the lyrics went so great with the song and actually made sense compared to other songs he had released. The main reason for this being my favorite song was that Nicki Minaj came in with some heat. Minaj came in from a slow song and then came in speeding. She did a great job and helped contribute to why the song was so good. The album was one of his better ones but not my favorite; I like his last album Stoney better.

hen breakout sensation Cardi B announced her album drop at the iHeart Music Awards March 5, the Internet, myself included, went up in flames. Cardi’s highly anticipated album Invasion of Privacy recently dropped April 5, featuring some heavy hitters like SZA, Migos, Kehlani, Chance the Rapper and 21 Savage. The 13 tracks on the album include an excellent mix of upbeat trap music and songs that will pull you in your feelings. Cardi, of course, had her breakout hits ”Bodak Yellow” and “Bartier Cardi,” as well as some new fan favorites such as “Money Bag” and “I Like It.” Invasion of Privacy also shows a more vulnerable side of Cardi, which is different than her normal persona. This shows in songs like “Thru the Phone,” where she opens up about cheating in her relationship, which is speculated to be about fiancé and baby daddy Offset, who is a member of the group Migos. This wide range of songs is a great arrangement to show you exactly who Cardi is and what she is about. Personally, I am a big fan of Cardi B and was not let down by her debut album. Some songs have a permanent spot on my playlist. I recommend you take a listen for yourself.

Married to Music is a series that takes the wedding tradition of something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue and gives it a musical flair. R A Q U E L

As the Washington sun has started to make appearances more and more, I have been searching for songs that encapsulate the feeling of carefreeness that summer evokes. “Listen to the Music” by the Doobie Brothers perfectly expresses this feeling. The upbeat guitar melodies are the kind that get stuck in your head all day, not to mention the catchy chorus. The lyrics discuss the hope for a peaceful society and how their use of music can spread this positive message, hence “listen to the music” being a frequent line in the song. In this sense, “listening to the music” means to listen to the hope of a utopian society that is sure to come in time. In the context of the society of the songs’ release in 1972, this message becomes more clear; it was in the midst of the controversial Vietnam War and a massive social revolution. All in all, “Listen to the Music” is a fun, upbeat and optimistic song that is perfect for these sunny spring days ahead.

One of my favorite songs has always been “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac, released in 1975. Stevie Nicks’ lyrics are so meaningful and express the uncertainty of growing up and the adversity that comes with it. Because of this, the song has always had a special place in my heart. So I was pleasantly surprised when The Japanese House’s Amber Bain released a Spotify Sessions cover of the song. Bain puts a soft electronic twist on the track while maintaining the classic main guitar riff of the song. Bain also evokes the same vocal styles of Stevie Nicks to really encapsulate the tone of the original song, giving heart and emotion into each line of the track. I love this spin on the track and think it really does a great job in honoring the timelessness of the original.

Released as a surprise April 18, Australian folkindie band The Paper Kites’ On the Train Ride Home is a breathtakingly beautiful album. My favorite track, however, has to be the title track, “On the Train Ride Home.” The song is introspective and contemplative; the lyrics are so honest it almost seems as though the song was the only way to get these emotions out. I know that I have had moments where I just stare out the window of a car or plane or train and just think. And that is that this song is for me -- that feeling of pure thought. The simple guitar fits perfectly with the tone of the song and works not to distract from the lyrical focus. “If I can’t get the things I want, give me what I need.” The final words of the song ring out, followed soon by the ambient noise of a subway train slowly coming to a stop. With the stopping of the train comes the stopping of the singers contemplation and of the song. This song is gorgeous and I would strongly recommend giving it a listen. I cannot wait to hear more from The Paper Kites, as they have another album releasing in August that I am sure will be just as amazing as its predecessor.

Sticking to the theme of honest, emotive lyrics, Canadian indie-rock singer Mac Demarco’s “Watching Him Fade Away” off of his third album This Old Dog fits right in. The track is all about Demarco’s father and his conflicting feelings he has toward him. As his father was an addict and an alcoholic who left his family when he was very young, Demarco does not know his father very well. But as it is, his father was diagnosed with cancer, causing him to resurface in his life. Demarco weighs two conflicting ideas: calling his father up and telling him how he really feels, or letting him “fade away” with no closure on their relationship. Even though they do not have a relationship, Demarco still feels pain letting his father slowly die: “And even though we barely know each other, it still hurts watching him fade away.” The same simple electronic tune is constant throughout the track, letting the lyrics be the star of the show, something toned down from his usual style. This track definitely stands out from Demarco’s discography and I strongly recommending give it and This Old Dog a listen.

FALLIN’ IN LOVE WITH ‘ONE KISS’

REVIEW B Y

M E G A N LY N N C H I E F

“One Kiss” by Calvin Harris featuring Dua Lipa is a must listen to for any electronic music lover. The Scottish DJ has returned to his original style of deep house, jazz music mixed in with techno, in this single. Harris utilizes an uplifting beat, one that you could tap your feet to, or in my case, shake your head to while driving. The beat pairs nicely with the calming voice of Dua Lipa, as they complement each other with the simplistic pattern of chord and lyric. The chorus is simple to match the beat patterns, yet it also stands out to the audience: “One kiss is all it takes fallin’ in love with me.” The breakdown of the song offers a strong vocal with less beat causing an intense moment within the song, creating a build up to the ending chorus. Dua Lipa’s voice matched perfectly to Harris’ style. Her voice was smooth and subtle to combat the high synthesizers in the song. While her voice also was matching the intensity of the bass. My one complaint would be that the song is too long for the amount of content Harris had. Honestly, the song could have been cut down from it being more than three minutes to around two minutes. Overall, the song is very repetitive but this is what makes the song so catchy. ‘One Kiss’ is a song that is easy to sing to. Harris’ ‘One Kiss’ is a must add to your daily playlist.

ndie-pop band Echosmith’s newly released single “Over My Head” represents their present style. Their sound has progressed from their old style showed in their first album, Talking Dreams, which came out in late 2013, featuring the hit song “Cool Kids.” Formed in 2009, the band’s discography consists of indie-rock tunes with a distinct pop element. Currently, the Sierota sibling band consists of vocalist/keyboardist Sydney, bass player Noah and percussionist Graham. The release date for their upcoming album is to be determined but their style has definitely matured since their single “Cool Kids” came out five years ago.
