ized by most students. Sometimes and even frequently students carry the mentality that they can waltz through life without a second glance at deadlines or requirements. Procrastination tells us that we can put things off and it will be alright, that we’ll be able to live in the moment the way we want to but still, eventually, pull it off.

By setting the standards high from the beginning, it holds us accountable to a standard that is not our own. By removing certain requirements and expectations we are being fed the belief that we can do what we want, when we want and society will accept this sunken standard from us.

When this happens it reinforces that our low expectations are okay as long as they will be accepted by people above us. When this happens we drop our own expectations and where will this get us? If we are held to these new expectations, we will miss out on the critical reflection that many aspects of the high school portfolio provides given that we dedicate ourselves to finding meaning in said reflection. So when society begins to expect so little of us, what are we left to expect of ourselves?

If we as a society are to lead our youth into a healthy, driven future, we need to begin with setting a standard and sticking to it. It is up to us to rise to the challenge. Let us and we will.

‘directioner’ mania stuns The sight of flashing lights.

The feeling of excitement.

The sound of thousands of screaming people.

Since tickets for this concert went on sale a year before, the anticipating crowd members had been waiting to see the British boy band of five called One Direction.

Now, July 28 at the Key Arena the crowd members were getting their first glimpse of the five members: Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik.

M ADDY LuCAS OP/ ED The bands’ entrance hadn’t been fantastic or exciting. They literally walked onto the stage and began to sing.

Once One Direction’s first song came to a close, the members began talking to the audience. People were going insane, screaming things like “I love you!” and “Marry me [insert band member here]!”

The girl next to me was holding her hands over her heart and shrieking “Oh my gosh!

Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!”

I scooted away from her and tried to avoid eye contact, scared that she was one of those crazy die-hard fans that call themselves “Directioners.” If she was and she learned my secret, I would be toast.

My secret was that I had no clue what the big deal was about One Direction.

Although I liked a few of their songs, I never was the girl that had a crush on one of the members or thought that one day I would marry them. I viewed the people who thought they were in love with these boys as ridiculous. The ones who believed that they were the band’s biggest fan were pitiful in my eyes and the ones that melted to butter at the sight of the boys were irrational.

I had only known I was going to the

concert for three days after my friend offered me her extra ticket.

Not only did I not understand the fuss over them, I was very uneducated in the world of One Direction. I had learned that there were not four band members like I thought but five. Not one of them had the name John. And looking at the set list, I knew only two of the songs really well.

I was definitely not a die-hard fan of One Direction.

As the next song started, the combination of the loud music and screams became too much for me. I tried to shove a pair of

earplugs into my ears but sadly they were ineffective against the deafening noises.

Although I couldn’t really sing along to the music, I was entertained by the sight of the singers goofing off on stage. Two of them were having a fake fist fight and the others were dancing.

On a second stage they answered questions that audience members had submitted on twitter. The questions were funny, like “Which one of you is going to be married first?” or “If you were in the ‘Hunger Games,’ which one of you would die first and how?” The witty boys

appeared to have great fun answering these questions.

The finale of the concert was incredible.

The band sang “What Makes You Beautiful” and there was red and white confetti raining down from the ceiling.

Crowd members on the floor were tossing around large colored balloons.

Even though I am not the biggest One Direction fan, I had a great time at the concert. The crazy fans, the blaring music and flashing lights were all things that helped create a memory that will stick with me forever.

We’ve all been there, freaking out with a planner. The school provides a good only 30 minutes to get a whole project planner but yours has to be one you won’t mind looking at every day. finished.

What I like to do is to write down on what day I’m getting certain requirements done. for example, I would write down that I

want to finish the outline on Monday and then I will put another part of it together on Tuesday.

If you divide up as much work as you can before the due date you won’t feel so overwhelmed because you will be getting some work done each day. Keep your schedule in mind. If you are busy on a certain day, plan around it.

The most important thing is to stay busy but not overworked. When you become overworked you are less likely to make any progress and everything will seem harder.

If you set up plan that divides the work out so that you get everything done in a timely manner, not only will you get the work done but you will get it done in time.

In early September, students at PHS received a survey outlining their sleep schedules, caffeine consumption and basic information. There were 945 surveys completely filled out and counted.

The effects of sleep deprivation, and the temporary fixes for it, are everywhere.

Being tired has become a staple of the teenage life and it seems that very few people see it as anything more than a common experience.

Scientists and psychologists, however, are attempting to convey through research and studies that sleep deprivation is indeed something to worry about.

The national Sleep foundation (nSf) states that high school students should be getting eight and a half to nine hours of sleep. according to one of nSf’s studies, a mere 15 percent are reaching that goal on school nights. reasons for this have been argued and debated for years, but recently scientists

Therefore, if you skip sleep to get a few more hours of studying in, you might harm your grade rather than improve it.

The human body primarily needs three things to function: food, water and sleep. students tend to be pretty good at satisfying two of these three. sleep is a different story. so why is sleep, something the body actually requires in order to function, so hard to get enough of? a possible reason is that school simply gets in the way of sleep. requiring students to wake up in the wee hours of the morning in order to make it to first period before 7:45 a.m. casts it as a likely culprit. in the morning, many students, like senior collin gustafson, are sleepy and drink coffee to keep from falling asleep. “on a typical morning i am pretty tired when i wake up… if i do not drink coffee it is very hard to stay awake,” gustafson said. attendance secretary Beverly vesey said that many of the students she sees in the morning are drinking coffee from a variety of local coffee shops. for other students it can be hard to focus in class because of their drowsiness.

Junior Jordan Binford relates. “i have that weird spacing where i stare into one point and i forget about what i am doing,” Binford said. however, there are legitimate scientific reasons for students struggling to get enough sleep.

With students still adjusting from their summer sleep schedules to their school sleep schedules, The Viking Vanguard investigates sleep patterns as well as the impact of caffeine consumption to combat sleep deprivation.

often when walking through high school hallways the one thing anyone would notice is the amount of coffee and caffeinated drinks floating around. one may also notice the ongoing chatter about sleep.

These two concepts of caffeine and sleep are tied together in trying to prevent the mutual feeling of sleep deprivation among teenagers.

John roof has worked in the coffee industry for 20 years, which gives him plenty of experience in the world of caffeine. he worked at millstone coffee and ran his own business called the coffee Zoo where a portion of the proceeds went to autism charities. “i am so familiar with coffee that it was no a hard decision to let my children drink it. in fact, i didn’t even think about it, i consider drinking coffee a natural progression to the growing up process,” roof said. around 28 percent of teenage students rely on energy drinks once a week or more for energy purposes.

Junior rylee orozco said that caffeine isn’t only a delicious treat, but it proves to be a routine every morning to help her through the day and a plus is that it comes in the form of coffee and energy drinks. “i usually drink a cup of coffee every morning, sometimes two. it starts my day on the right foot but if i drink it after 4 p.m. it seems to keep me awake for a while,” orozco said.

or over a century, band has been representing Puyallup High School at sporting events, contests and festivals.

When Eric Ryan first became the band teacher, the band program had less than 100 students. Now more and more students are participating and becoming involved in band.

“When I started here in 2000 there were about 98 people in band and this year we have 140. We have been bigger; there have been a couple years when we have been 160. More students are staying involved in it,” Ryan said.

One change that band faced last year was the loss of their uniforms. The old band uniforms were old and unfit to be worn, according to Drum Major Gabi Touriel.

Now the band wears sweatshirts, slacks and baseball caps during parades and sporting events. Touriel explains this change.

“The prejudices are thinking that everything here is bigger. Maybe not healthy food. Also that the school here is simple. Now that I’m here, I don’t think so,” Grilli said.

Razanti has different views than Grilli.

“I thought that Americans were anorexic. They are not as ruthless as I thought they were. They have been really respectful of me and my religion. The food is the worst part. Too salty and too sweet,” Razanti said.

These students have just started their journey here in America and both have goals for themselves to learn and grow while here.

“I hope to gain understanding from this experience. I want people to know that Muslims aren’t as you think,” Razanti said. “I want to see and remove my stereotypes of you Americans, that you don’t bully each other and you aren’t ruthless, I hope to learn a lot here.”

Pho, an appalling bowl of soup some people claim to be food. i have had to eat this insufferable dish many times and trust me it does not get any better the more you eat it.

Pho is a Vietnamese soup containing noodles, vegetables and a selection of meats. on paper, pho sounds like a good mixture of foods that are on their own delicious. add heated water though and suddenly you have a flavorless dish for dinner.

The one thing pho does successfully is give you a variety of ingredient options.

There are steak, chicken, brisket, seafood and tofu varieties just to name a few. you can practically dump a bunch of random ingredients into a pho soup. if you enjoy drinking the broth of soups, you might enjoy pho. if you do not like the flavor you have a small chance to redeem it with the condiments they place on the table, as if the chefs knew you wanted to eat something with flavor.

Pho has no flavor. even with meats and noodles pho does not taste like anything but salty water with slimy noodles. The meat i had ended up being dry. i moved past the dry meat soup and added some spicy Sriracha sauce. all it really did was make the water have a kick so i added lime. Then the water had a subtle lime flavor for the rest of the meal. if you are like me, this continues on and on. eventually you will hit your breaking point where it either gets to spicy or you make the mistake of dumping soy sauce into it. in both scenarios no flavor is added, it is only augmented.

My family, who loves pho, kept saying that it was hard to find a good pho place. Well, if such a place exists i have yet to find it.

With that being said give it a try for yourself.

Blissfully simple, soothingly warm, strikingly unique, breathtakingly delicious, temptatious to behold: pho.

Pho is a noodle-based soup dish hailing from Vietnam and, with its growing popularity in Puyallup, pho joints seem to be popping up everywhere. it’s no wonder this dish is becoming more and more trendy, it is one of the most flavorful and relaxing dishes i’ve ever had the pleasure to have eaten.

The tasty noodles in the soup are a blank canvas to be flavored with a broth of your choice. There are several different seafood and meat-based broths as well as vegetable.

The simple but pleasant noodles, meat and broth set the stage for the part that make pho the most fun; the condiments.

They come out with your bowl of hot soup; usually some sort of platter full of delicacies such as bean sprouts, lime and basil along with a tray of sauces and concoctions to personalize your dish to your liking. however, be watchful, i have dined with some that have an inability to add humane amounts of the optional condiments, a slight slip of their wavering hand turning their soup into a repulsive and unpleasant looking black liquid.

Moderation is key, make sure you like a condiment before dumping a whole bottle of it on top your soup.

The forebodingly chilly and rainy season of fall has, well, fallen upon us. This means for most people huddling up to a warm bowl of soup; nonesuch better than pho, whose flavor really depends on what you order and what condiments you add. i’ve had the dish a number of occasions and every time i leave the restaurant with a smile on my face, peace in my heart, a gut full of good food and a wallet that has a few pennies left in it. even a small order is a hulking bowl of happiness that is relatively cheap for the quantity; quality not sacrificed.

Something about the simplicity of steaming broth and warm noodles will put your mind and body at easy.

Take yourself to lunch sometime, maybe even take your mother. you know, when she starts nagging about how you never call her?

Being a noodle dish, pho takes a bit of thinking and fines to eat, meaning your mouth is never really available to say words. Pho provides an excellent scapegoat. i would recommend the dish to anyone whether your reasons are righteous or, maybe a little less than. Treat yourself to a warm and soothing bowl of pho, try something new. after all, you deserve it, right? Pho is too sure to improve your life. it is truly pho-nomenal.

The bane of my existence is a bad night’s sleep.

Considering sleeping is my number one favorite activity right now, I can not afford to lose a minute of it.

I have only recently heard of the Smart Alarm Clock from Plus Sports for iPhone so I decided to check it out.

I am actually really pleased with the product although it does cost $2.99 on the Apple app store.

The app was extremely easy to use and rested.

Unfortunately the app does not double to setup.

All that you have to do is a setup test of as a clock or reminder system very well.

Whenever you start it, after a few secwhere you plan on putting it and you are onds of not touching it, the screen goes ready to sleep.

if you are just need something to remind you.

The app is for sleep only.

The Smart Alarm Clock also does not have any scheduling system so you have to set it manually every night.

Although setting it is easy enough it would be nice to be able to say wake me up at 6:30 a.m. every Monday or something similar.

The Smart Alarm clock did everything it said it would.

I am impressed by the quality of the product, it put me to sleep every night and woke me up every morning, better than any other alarm I have used.

Even if you do not have problems with falling asleep this app does a good job of helping you get a higher quality of rest.

The Smart Alarm Clock is a wonderful tool for any sleeper.
