Meet Ryan Weaver FROM ROCK BOTTOM TO RESILIENCE — THE HEART BEHIND

REDSTONE REVISION At first glance, Ryan Weaver might seem like your typical Central Texas handyman—a hard worker with a passion for helping homeowners and a knack for fixing just about anything.

But look a little closer, and you'll find a story filled with grit, redemption, and the kind of purpose that sticks with you long after the job is done.

Ryan’s entrepreneurial journey began in Lorena, Texas, where he lives with his wife Sarah, their two dogs—Bullet and Jimmy—and their cat, Elvis. But the roots of his story stretch all the way back to his childhood, when he started running 5Ks at just 8 years old, side by side with his grandpa, John Taverner, at the Zoo Stampede in Cameron Park.

Fast forward to today, and running has become more than just a childhood memory—it’s become a way of life. After battling addiction and reclaiming his future, Ryan now uses long-distance races, including ultras, to test his resilience, stay grounded in his sobriety, and keep moving forward, no matter what life throws his way.

“Being content with an easy life just didn’t feel right,” Ryan shares. “We don’t have much time on this Earth—I wanted to see how resilient we really are.”

His greatest inspiration came from his father, Bill Taverner, who entered Ryan’s life when he was just five years old. Bill was more than just a father figure—he was a coach, a cheerleader, and eventually, a workout partner. Together, they trained for Spartan races, pushing past limits and building memories. Tragically, Bill passed away from a heart attack shortly after completing a Spartan 10K. But his legacy lives on in every step Ryan takes on the trail.

After completing the Spartan Ultra in his father’s honor, Ryan hasn’t looked back.

Inspired by the likes of David Goggins, Nick Bare, and Wim Hof, and driven by the years he feels were lost to addiction, he now dreams of conquering some of the world’s most grueling races, like the Ironman, Leadville 100, and Badwater 135.

But Ryan’s story doesn’t stop at the finish line. In 2020, during the height of uncertainty brought on by COVID-19, he stepped out on faith and launched Redstone Revision, a construction and handyman service built on integrity, trust, and the belief that your home should be cared for like it’s your own.

“I saw a need for trustworthy contractors who treat your home like theirs,” Ryan explains. “We build relationships, not just transactions.”

Redstone Revision was born out of frustration with the industry—and a deep desire to do things differently.

With a legacy of construction in his blood (his grandfather’s been in the business since the '70s), Ryan took his knowledge, work ethic, and newly found confidence and created something that serves others in a meaningful way.

Today, Redstone Revision helps clients with busy lifestyles, new homebuyers, and anyone needing help bringing their home improvement vision to life. Whether it’s a full renovation or a small fix, Ryan and his team are committed to providing top-tier service with a personal touch..

And while his business is growing, Ryan’s heart is just as focused on helping people off the job site as on it.

“We’re more than a boutique,” Sthefanie says. “We’re a community. We’re a reminder that you matter—and you’re magic.”

Fashion with Purpose From hand-printed t-shirts to one-of-a-kind artisan goods, The Black Daisy offers more than clothing—it’s a curated collection of creativity, expression, and heart. The shop now houses products from 12 women-owned small businesses and proudly showcases handmade goods and unique pieces you’re unlikely to find anywhere else in town.

“I believe in community over competition,” says Sthefanie. “It’s not just about what we sell. It’s about lifting up others and creating a space that reflects love, acceptance, and empowerment.”

Nearly all of the t-shirts are printed in-house by Sthefanie herself, and her signature style is unmistakable—bold, fun, and full of meaning.

A Boutique Built on a Story of Strength Behind the bright colors and bold designs is a powerful personal story. Sthefanie is a sex trafficking survivor, and today she uses her platform to uplift others who may feel unseen or unworthy. As a board member of Lovely Village That deep sense of purpose infuses (formerly Jesus Said Love), she continues to every rack and display, reminding each shopper that they are valued, cherished, pour into a mission that hits close to home. and worthy of joy.

“Surviving homelessness, trafficking, and addiction are a huge part of why The Black Daisy is what it is today,” she shares. “It’s more than a boutique—it’s a ministry. I never want another woman to feel like she doesn't deserve a beautiful life.”

Family, Chaos, & Matcha Lattes Sthefanie’s energy is magnetic—and real. She and her husband moved to Waco from Fort Hood (now Fort Cavazos) where he served in law enforcement. Together, they’re raising two sons—both adopted in 2014—as well as four dogs with big personalities, including one named Bacon Pancakes and another named Drax the Destroyer.

When she’s not running the boutique, printing shirts, or managing the chaos of life at home, you’ll probably find her sipping a matcha at Reign Coffee, picking up cookies at Milk Bottle Cookies, or adding to her collection of tattoos from local artist Rissa Adamson.

Living the Dream One Day at a Time In 2024, Sthefanie checked off a major goal— opening a booth at Spice Village in Downtown Waco. It’s a full-circle moment for a business that started on the floor of her living room and grew into a beloved staple of the Waco shopping scene.

Beyond Spice Village, you can also find The Black Daisy’s handmade goods at Mosaic Makers and Market at the Mill in Clifton. But for Sthefanie, the real dream is simpler: “I just want to keep our doors open and live out this calling, one day at a time.”

The Tool Shed: Where Old Tools Build New Futures in Waco Waco is home to many hidden gems—but one of the most impactful might just be a thrift store that specializes in second chances for tools and people. Located at 430 Lake Air Drive, The Tool Shed Thrift Shop is a one-of-a-kind resale store that repairs and resells donated tools to benefit a local nonprofit with a powerful mission: Friends for Life.

Opened in 2019 as a new initiative under the 30-year legacy of Friends for Life, The Tool Shed was inspired by a successful program in Fairport, NY. That model raised over $750,000 in just eight years to support senior services, and now Waco is tapping into that same innovative spirit to serve older adults and individuals with disabilities across 45 Texas counties.

Giving Tools—and Lives—a Second Chance At The Tool Shed, your old, broken, or unused tools find new purpose. With the help of volunteers, donated tools are cleaned up, repaired when possible, and sold at discounted prices.

The proceeds directly support Friends for Life’s mission to serve some of the most vulnerable members of the Central Texas community.

WELLNESS Tucked away on Franklin Avenue is a space where strength, sweat, and self-worth collide. It’s called The Muscle Cave Bar & Gym, and if you ask its owner, Franny Cochran, it’s so much more than just a place to work out—it’s where people go to rewrite their stories.

That breakthrough sparked something powerful. In 2015, Franny and her husband, Doug, started leading workouts in a church parking lot and an open field. It wasn’t until July 2017 that they opened their own brick-and-mortar location—and from day one, The Muscle Cave has been changing lives.

“Our mission is to help individuals not only get healthy and moving, but to help them build self-confidence, self-respect, and learn how to properly self-care through all stages of life,” Franny explains.

And yes, there’s a bar—but not the kind you’re thinking. The Muscle Cave Bar serves pre-workout shots, BCAAs on Franny’s own transformation is the the rocks, protein smoothies, and even heartbeat of the gym she founded. “I was offers in-house meal prep. It’s equal an overweight kid who became an parts energizing and empowering. overweight adult,” she says. “After my second child, I was tired of being sick and tired.” She joined a local group fitness class, took her first steps toward health, and ended up losing over 100 pounds. But more than the physical weight, she dropped the emotional heaviness that comes with feeling like you’re not enough.

What makes this gym truly stand out? It’s not part of a franchise. Everything about The Muscle Cave—from the structure and set-up to the custom workout timers and class flow—was built from the ground up by Franny and her team. “We’ve designed every detail to prevent over-training and burnout,” she says. “Our goal is long-term health, not just quick results.”

For Franny, inclusivity is everything. She wants people of all fitness levels to know that they belong. “Starting something new can be intimidating,” she says, “but we’re here. We’ve created a space where beginners, advanced athletes, and everyone in between can feel welcome.”

When she’s not leading workouts, Franny enjoys life outdoors as a full-time Camp Host at Lake Waco with her husband, Doug. They spend their downtime grilling, biking, and enjoying life with their rescue dog Diggle (named after John Diggle from Arrow), who keeps things lively by barking at deer. Their blended family includes four teenagers— and yes, things are as busy and joyful as that sounds.

Franny’s past career as a marketing consultant might seem worlds away from fitness, but the communication and community-building skills she honed there now fuel her mission to make Waco a healthier, more empowered city—one person at a time.

Oh, and in case you were wondering—Franny and Doug once dabbled in the wedding business! As ordained ministers, they briefly launched “Just Say I Do,” a stress-free elopement experience offering everything from cake to flowers. “We did three ceremonies,” Franny laughs, “before deciding it wasn’t quite our thing.”

These days, her passion lies in helping others grow stronger, inside and out. Whether she’s blending a smoothie, leading a high-energy class, or redesigning her camper (her current crafting obsession), Franny is proof that transformation is possible—and that it often begins with a single step.

“Life goes by too fast,” she says. “I genuinely enjoy slowing down, being outside, and connecting with people. That’s what The Muscle Cave is about.”

Monthly Gatherings at The Baylor Club Women of Waco hosts its monthly meetings on the second Friday of each month at The Baylor Club, located within McLane Stadium. These gatherings begin with open networking at 11:00 AM, followed by lunch at 11:15 AM, and the main program commencing at 11:30 AM. Each meeting features guest speakers, member spotlights, and ample opportunities for attendees to connect and share insights. A In addition to the monthly luncheons, W.O.W. organizes "WOW After Hours" events, providing a more relaxed setting for members to network and build relationships outside the traditional meeting format.

Membership Details Women of Waco offers annual memberships at $80, with a reduced rate of $50 for those joining between July and December. Memberships are limited to three representatives per business category to maintain diversity and balance within the group. Members are expected to attend at least six of the twelve annual meetings to remain in good standing. Women of Waco Benefits of membership include a listing in the organization's online directory, opportunities to participate in professional development programs, and the chance to apply for scholarships aimed at leadership training.

A Legacy of Compassion: Inez Russell and the Mission Behind Friends for Life In 1989, what began as a moment of human connection in a hospital room sparked a lifelong mission of service.

Inez Russell, while visiting her father in a Waco hospital, heard cries from a nearby room and discovered an elderly woman pleading not to die alone.

Moved by this heartbreaking encounter, Russell sat with her, listened to her life story, and returned each day. That simple act of compassion gave the woman strength —and eventually, she recovered and returned home.

This experience made Russell acutely aware of a quiet crisis: many older adults and individuals with disabilities face life entirely alone, without care, companionship, or advocates.

Determined to change this, Russell founded Friends for Life that same year in a small borrowed office—with no paid staff, no budget, and no existing programs. What she did have was a vision.

Today, more than three decades later, that vision has grown into a transformative nonprofit headquartered in 26,000-square-foot Intergenerational Center in Waco, with satellite offices in Abilene, Corpus Christi, Texas City, Tyler, and San Antonio.

The organization has grown to employ a staff of 85 and mobilize thousands of volunteers statewide. Together, they’ve served nearly 26,000 Texans through an expanding range of innovative programs.

Programs with Purpose Friends for Life exists to improve the well-being of seniors and individuals with disabilities—especially those who have no one else. The organization offers six core services: Guardianship: Providing legal guardianship for individuals who cannot safely make decisions on their own.

Money Management: Helping clients manage finances, pay bills, and prevent financial abuse.

Independent Living Support: Offering volunteers who assist with daily tasks so individuals can remain in their own homes.

Life Skills Development: Teaching skills that promote autonomy and selfconfidence.

Adult Day Care: Providing care, activities, and community in a safe, supportive environment.

Quality of Life Services: Organizing events, gift programs, and personal support to combat loneliness and isolation.

With these programs, Friends for Life empowers vulnerable populations to live with dignity, purpose, and as much independence as possible.

Expanding the Reach As Friends for Life enters its 35th year, its goals remain ambitious and deeply rooted in service. The organization is working to expand services into rural and underserved areas across Texas—without taking on debt. Among their priorities are doubling the size of the Waco Adult Day Care Center, launching a Supported Decision-Making initiative, and extending current programs like Independent Living and Quality of Life into new communities.

One of the most exciting developments is the plan to build two new affordable housing communities on Lakeshore Drive in Waco: one with 93 units for senior citizens and another with 120 units for adults with disabilities. These properties will include supportive services such as food delivery, transportation, and case management, all offered at rent rates that are just 30% of a resident’s income—making them accessible for the people who need them most.

Leading with Heart The organization’s guiding principle is as simple as it is powerful: If someone has a need, and we can meet it, we will. If we can’t, we do our best to find someone who can.

Russell’s unwavering dedication has not gone unnoticed. In 2025, she was named Central Texas’ Remarkable Woman of the Year, a well-deserved recognition of her decades of tireless advocacy. Her personal mission—rooted in time spent with her grandmother visiting shut-ins and hospital patients—has become a statewide movement of compassion, hope, and practical help.

“I thought everyone grew up with someone who cared for them,” Russell once said. “When I realized that wasn’t the case, I knew I had to do something.”

With Author Rachael Kurgan

From Educator to Author and Advocate

For Rachael Kurgan, writing a book was never something that she thought about. Her father had written a science fiction book when she was younger, but she never would have thought to write a book, especially one about her life.

Rachael was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona, in a loving family of four; her mother, father, sister, and herself (and their four cats, of course!) Rachael has a type of neuromuscular disability called Charcot-Marie Tooth disease. It is a hereditary disability that affects the motor and sensory nerves in your arms, legs, and feet. It can cause loss of feeling, muscle weakness, and more serious complications like hearing loss, vision loss, and asthma.

It was at the age of 12 when Rachael experienced her first monumental loss in her life. Her father was killed in a car accident outside their apartment complex. Her story tells of how she overcame the grief and learned to cope with the loss through the help of God and her family and friends.

Rachael has been involved in the Assemblies of God church since before she was born. Church has always been an integral part of her life and her family.

It was in her early high school years, at a church summer camp, when she received her calling from God to be a children’s pastor. As a result, she attended Grand Canyon University in Arizona and received her Bachelor of Arts in Christian Studies with an emphasis in Youth Ministry.

It was during her college years that she experienced her second monumental loss. Her mother died from a very serious bacterial infection called Necrotizing Fasciitis; an infection that kills off the muscle in your body.

Her book tells the story of how she coped with that loss and learned to keep going, even in the face of great adversity.

“I’ll just wait in heaven, ‘til we meet again.

I know you miss me, just remember I am free.

Free from pain and sorrow, God’s love fills each tomorrow.

My love is in your heart, we’ll never be apart.

Cherish the love we share, remember how much I care.

Someday we’ll be together, because love lives forever!

So I’ll just wait in heaven, ‘til we meet again.”

After graduating college, she moved to Waco, Texas, where she is a children’s pastor at a local church in Hewitt. She loves her job and the kids that she works with! After living in Waco for one year, she married her college sweetheart back in Arizona. They both attend the church in Hewitt and are looking forward to spending the rest of their lives together.

Rachael wrote this book to share her story with others and to encourage those who may be going through similar situations. A reminder that you are never as alone as you feel, and God is always with you.

Sweet Joy, Baked from the Heart Inside Lottie’s Cookies & Cakery

Some stories begin with a recipe—and others begin with a paintbrush.

If you’ve ever bitten into a soft, citrus-glazed cookie or a dreamy slice of berry cobbler cake in the Waco area, there’s a good chance it came from the kitchen of Lottie Donahue, the heart and hands behind Lottie’s Cookies & Cakery in Lorena, Texas. Though the name, logo, and website are just three years old, Lottie’s talent and love for baking have been quietly filling kitchens and celebrations for over thirty years.

Known affectionately as “Lorena’s cookie lady,” she balanced home baking with raising four kids and working full-time, never quite planning to turn her hobby into a business.

That changed when her daughter, who once made custom cakes and cupcakes, left for college. Her loyal customers turned to Lottie, asking her to step in—and she did. Angie at Simply Delicious in Waco graciously offered Lottie space to bake, and those years in the commercial kitchen allowed her to sharpen her cake-decorating skills and learn the ins and outs of running a bakery.

Eventually, the orders outgrew the side hustle, and Lottie made the leap to become a full-time baker.

Today, she’s preparing for over sixty weddings in 2025 and is still amazed at the outpouring of support. For Lottie, the reward isn’t just in the finished product—it’s in being part of someone’s happiest moments. She lights up when brides message her the morning after their wedding to say the cake was the best they’ve ever had. That connection fuels everything she does.

Though many home bakers choose between cookies or cakes, Lottie does both with ease—and with heart. She’s just as excited to bake a small cake for an intimate gathering as she is to design desserts for a six-hundred-guest wedding. Her creativity shines through in her flavor choices too.

While vanilla and chocolate are always on the menu, she encourages clients to branch out and try something new—like cinnamon roll, tiramisu, raspberry lemon, or berry cobbler cake.

Lottie describes herself as an artist more than a baker. Before settling in Lorena, she painted children’s murals in homes, and it’s that same passion for color, design, and detail that she now pours into every dessert she creates. The artistic side of baking, she says, is what keeps it fresh and exciting. The crazier the cake idea, the more fun it is for her to bring to life.

She’s lived in Lorena since 1998 with her husband John, whom she’s been married to for nearly 40 years. They have four children, a son-in-law, and a grandson she adores.

When she’s not baking, Lottie loves trying new foods—especially Asian cuisine—and says her ideal last meal would be anything at all, as long as it’s shared with the people she loves most.

“Look at what you spent last summer and how this summer’s plans might be the same or different,” he says. “Use that to create a baseline.”

Hosting the neighborhood for fireworks? Assign each of these events a number—and build your plan around them. Danny suggests setting those funds aside in a separate account to avoid dipping into them prematurely.

“Out of sight, out of mind,” he says. “It helps protect your budget from everyday spending.”

Budgeting with Grace Danny understands that not everyone is a budgeting pro from day one. “If you’ve never budgeted, you might be off in the beginning. That’s okay. Give yourself grace,” he advises.

“Budgeting is a skill, and like any skill, it takes practice. Adjust and try again.”

Get the Kids Involved With the kids home for summer, it’s the perfect time to introduce them to saving habits. Danny recommends modeling savings behavior by setting and tracking a family goal—like a vacation— and letting your kids do the same.

“Make it visual. Create a savings chart. Celebrate milestones along the way,” he suggests.

He also recommends helping kids create their own piggy banks—one for saving, one for spending, and one for giving—using household items like jars or shoeboxes. Then, encourage them to divide their allowance, chore money, or birthday cash among the three.

“Talk about money in your everyday life,” Danny says. “It takes intentional effort, especially with online shopping and services like DoorDash, but those conversations are where the learning happens.”

A Human Approach to Financial Planning Danny’s passion for personal finance led him to Core Planning after years of studying it on his own. And he has a simple message for anyone feeling overwhelmed: “It’s okay to ask for help. We all have different strengths. Think of a financial planner like a personal trainer for your money.”

A Waco Hidden Gem

I asked in THE VIBE WACO Facebook group what everyone’s favorite hidden gem was and Uncle Worm’s was a favorite by many. How did I never hear about this place?! It’s SO good and has a wonderful atmosphere!

I met a friend there for lunch and we weren’t disappointed! We ordered fried pickle spears as a shareable, the Famous Mac Daddy, and the Mac Momma. If you like mac and cheese, this is YOUR place! For dessert we topped it off with Dirt N Worms and Banana Pudding--yes just like your grandma use to make!

The place is set up comfortably with a rustic vibe. Upstairs is a separate bar area and place to just hang out. They frequently have live music on the weekend and host events as well.

Of course we asked the waitress where the name Uncle Worm’s came from. She informed us she was new, but she overheard someone telling the story of how it came about. The owner Justin Blalock was in and out of trouble when he was a kid, his friends and family started referring to him as “the worm”, he really didn’t like it but when he became an uncle he was then called “Uncle Worm” and it’s stuck for good!

By the time the storm cleared, the city lay in ruins — struck by one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history. With winds estimated over 260 mph, the F5 tornado cut a devastating path straight through downtown Waco, leaving 114 people dead, hundreds more injured, and an entire community forever changed.

At the time, tornado warning systems were minimal. Radar technology was still in its infancy, and sirens were rare or non-existent in most towns, including Waco. People had little to no warning. Many were at work or out shopping when the tornado hit, unaware that a massive storm was bearing down on them.

A Tragedy That Changed Everything The Waco tornado became a wake-up call. In the years that followed, the disaster helped prompt major changes in how the United States approached tornado preparedness. The federal government began investing in better radar systems, weather forecasting improved, and — critically — more cities began installing outdoor warning sirens.

Sirens became the audible voice of early warnings — a way to cut through daily noise and tell people, “Take cover now.”

A First Line of Defense Fast forward to today, and Waco, like many cities in Tornado Alley, is equipped with a network of outdoor tornado sirens.

These sirens are part of a broader emergency alert system designed to protect lives during fast-moving weather events.

They’re strategically placed around the city to warn people who are outdoors, where they're most vulnerable.

When the sirens go off, it’s a signal to seek shelter immediately — ideally in a basement, storm shelter, or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. They’re not meant to be heard indoors, which is why emergency officials also encourage the use of weather apps, NOAA radios, and text alerts for indoor warnings.

A Sound With Meaning In Waco, the sound of tornado sirens isn't just a technical alert.

It carries a deeper emotional weight — an echo of a day that reshaped the city. For long-time residents, it’s a reminder of resilience, of lives lost and lessons learned. The 1953 Waco tornado reminds us how quickly disaster can strike — and how crucial early warning systems are in saving lives.

They’ll drive families to local cemeteries, help select flowers and music, coordinate catering, and even make room for pets to say goodbye. “Yes, pets grieve, too,” Kris shares. “One man’s dog even jumped into the casket to say goodbye. It was incredibly emotional, but deeply healing.”

Grace Gardens also offers preplanning services—something Kris believes should be talked about far more than it is. “The best time to talk about a funeral is when you don’t need one,” she says. “Have those conversations now. Talk about the music, the place, the feeling you want. When families are left guessing, that’s when regret creeps in.”

Preplanning can range from simply writing down wishes to fully pre-funded plans, which lock in today’s prices and remove a financial burden from loved ones. “It’s one of the greatest gifts you can give your family,” she says.

“Especially as costs continue to rise.”

Still, not every family has the chance to plan ahead—and for those who are navigating a sudden loss, Grace Gardens walks beside them every step of the way. They offer customized keepsakes like fingerprint jewelry, live-streamed services, and curated pick-up experiences for cremains that allow space for reflection and remembrance. “Some of the most meaningful services I’ve witnessed were small and intimate,” Kris says. “Grief looks different for everyone. But I’ve found the cleanest grief—the kind that heals over time— comes from families who had fewer regrets. So say the things. Do the things.

Don’t wait.”

Outside of work, Kris lives in Hewitt with her husband, who pastors First Baptist Golinda and also works part-time at Grace Gardens. They’ve raised two sons, now grown, and while Kris jokes about her “empty nest struggles,” she stays connected to what matters most—faith, family, and the people of Central Texas. Her favorite things include driving her mom around Waco’s historic neighborhoods, indulging in comfort food at George’s or Poppa Rollo’s, and secretly hoping her next car has a heated steering wheel. (Oh—and her favorite color? “Animal print. Preferably zebra.”)

She dreams of adding a comfort dog to the Grace Gardens team—ideally a service dog dropout with a heart for hugs and a calming presence. “Grief doesn’t have a fix,” she says. “But it does need support. And sometimes, support looks like a dog curled up at your feet, or someone simply saying, ‘You don’t have to do this alone.’”
