A moment in time

I

t was an extraordinary adventure. A day trip filled with lights and music, decorations and delicacies, warm mittens and snow.

Most importantly, it was hours spent with a little grand baby.

I was delightfully reminded how a child’s world is fresh and beautiful, full of wonder and excitement. They watch, and they listen. They laugh from sheer exuberance and happiness. And soak up knowledge and information like

sponges, every moment is filled with learning. They hear, they see and they love with their whole heart.

It is our misfortune if we ever allow that clear-eyed vision, that true instinct for truth and what is beautiful and awe-inspiring, to ever grow dim, or even regrettably... lost. As adults we can perhaps become genuinely indifferent, or we consider that absorbing something new into our set pattern is intrusive. Too hard.

This hardening of the mind is a long distance from a child’s vision of simplicity. They have a sense of wonder so indestructible that it is meant to last a lifetime, as an unfailing antidote against any boredom, sterile preoccupation with things artificial, disenchantment, or the alienation from the true source of strength.

On this day amidst the dazzling lights, the crowd of figures, and the

absorbing interest of surroundings, many photographs of sweet impressions were captured in my heart.

And not to ever be forgotten, with the sound of soul-stirring melodies, a moment in time presented itself, as well, to clearly reflect on the deeper meaning that lay within reach of every one of us as we individually and collectively celebrate the extraordinary miracle of Christmas.

All you need is a crowbar and paint

I

f there’s one thing television and the Internet has done in the last decade, it has empowered people to be bold and dare to venture where they’ve never ventured before.

Take Jennifer, who last summer—while her husband was out of town—went to Home Depot and got everything she needed to make a deck and went home and built it.

Women, and men, are tearing out walls, gutting insides and ripping off roofs. They’re painting rooms brazen colors and decorating in ways they never would have dreamed of before.

Decorating and building used to be a realm of professionals. And then television got into the act with those do-it-yourself shows that demonstrate, step-by-step, how to ruin your own home and then put it back together again. I guarantee that if you watch these shows for one year you will accumulate enough knowledge to build your own house and completely finish the inside. All by yourself.

Back in the old days, being creative meant making something out of toilet paper rolls and glue and glitter.

Now Pinterest has taken creativity to a whole new level. An entire city could be built out of discarded pallets.

It’s not just the young adults who are spending hours poring over Pinterest. I know lots of women my age who have gone beyond hobbies such as “Repurposing your Husband After Retirement,” and “Growing a Pot Belly in

your Spare Time,” to creating marvelous items. They’re making lamps and tables and even painting upholstered furniture and toilets.

Last month, while my husband was in Seattle doing some training for his job, I got a creative urge. It’s interesting that these urges happen while he’s gone. Maybe because some of my ideas are so loony he doesn’t see how they will ever work.

Anyway, in our garage-turned-into-family room there was an upright freezer. White. Glaringly white. It did not fit into the Alaska/ hunting / art studio theme. So I painted it.

It’s now camouflaged and fits right in.

I have a friend who started building her own oak furniture decades years ago when she was in her 20s. Her father taught her the art of wood working when she was in grade school.

My father taught me some tricks, too, but I never thought of building anything like an oak rocking chair.

My specialty was tree forts and I was pretty good at the demolition part of things.

My sisters and I had parents who encouraged our creativity. There were no rules, no declarations that this or that wouldn’t work and nothing but praise for our sometimes-zany ideas. Since Dad always owned lumber mills we had an endless supply of wood. Our summers were spent building... and bandaging cut or smashed fingers.

A lot of us are creators at heart. Most women I know love hunting season when the man of the house heads to the woods and she can have free reign over the place. He doesn’t even know she’s spent months stockpiling paint and wallpaper and everything else she needs. In her mind she has formed the perfect plan. He isn’t at the end of the block before she swings into gear.

He comes home and she’s totally remodeled the place, moved the kitchen or changed the bedrooms around or wallpapered everything but the cat. Poor guy doesn’t know his own house but she is basking in that wonderful feeling of having done something marvelous.

Years ago I was sitting in the bathroom of our old house in Alaska, looking at the 1970s white plastic walls and the 30-year-old shower and the ugly avocado green linoleum and I thought to myself, I can fix this bathroom. I can make it look like one of those bathrooms you see in magazines at the grocery store check-out counter. Or, maybe not. But I think I’m going to give it a whirl.

Because of the old forgiveness versus permission I did not tell my husband. Really, I thought, how hard could it be?

I just needed a crowbar to pry off the old plastic panels and a scraper for the floor. The shower would be a bit tricky but not impossible. I supposed something had to be done with the water first but a person could just work around that.

Then, a bit of paint, some molding, a pile of tile and voila!

It turned out quite well and the satisfaction warmed my heart for weeks...until I was off on the next project, which involved getting my son to knock down a wall in the kitchen.

At our store, Red Door, in Moses Lake, we love our crafters who bring the most marvelous things in for us.

The creativity is sometimes astonishing, such as a coffee table with an old Jeep hood under the glass or a lamp made from an old percolator or movie camera. We love the uniqueness and ingenuity involved in each piece.

The most marvelous things about Pinterest and the television shows that promote creativity, is that we have been empowered with a can-do attitude. We are learning to trust our own instincts and imaginations and we have fallen in love with making things with our own hands.

The satisfaction from that is indescribable.

As an artist, I’ve always had the idea that anyone (yes even YOU) could create a painting that is worthy of a frame and a place of honor. Now, with tutorials and ideas abounding all over Pinterest, my theory has been proven.

The creative ideas these days are endless. All we need to do is let ourselves be free from discouraging attitudes, let our imaginations soar, and create!

Oh, if walls could talk

415 South Alder Street is a rarity—a structure more than 100 years old that began life as a farmhouse, was picked up and moved, became a hotel, then turned back into a house, then a business, and now a complex for business and artistic endeavors of all kinds.

The building stands two stories and has sixteen rooms plus a fully furnished basement. It’s painted all in white with a classic covered porch. Inside the glass paneled front door lies the lobby with a sitting room ahead of you and a kitchen beyond that. If you go left and climb a narrow staircase you’ll see a tiny hotel hallway, with doors lined up left and right. Everything is clean and white with simple wood trim.

The home began life as a farmhouse in Ruff (pronounced ‘roof’) in 1908, and was owned by the Schmidt family. In 1946, Jake Peters purchased the building and hired W.T. Crawford and Son to pick the whole thing up and move it to its current location in Moses Lake.

Moving such a large home safely along its fifteen mile journey was the most substantial piece of work the Crawford company had done up to that point. After the move was finished Crawford even had a new logo made to mark the occasion—a line-drawing of a truck with the farmhouse perched on the bed. A Columbia Basin Herald article from that time mentions that many tight corners only had inches

to spare!

Peters put the building to work as the “White Hotel”. It served in this capacity until 1973, when it was purchased by William and Dorothy Walker as a home for them and their eight children. The Walker clan lived in the basement and first floor, while renting the second story out to tenants.

The Walkers had moved from a small home on the Air Force base. One of their daughters, Marion, remembers being excited to be closer to downtown, but that the building seemed intimidating and a little spooky to a fifteen year old. When they arrived there was a big, pink, neon sign with block letters spelling out “HOTEL” vertically on the front of the building. Her father, William, took that down right away but the label stuck--to the Walker family the house has always been, “The Hotel”.

In 1982, the house changed owners again, this time being sold to daughter Marion. She converted the basement into a tanning salon--Alder Street Tan. Marion and her husband John have been the owners and operators of the building ever since.

Alder Street Tan is on the main floor now and the upstairs apartments and basement are being leased out to local craft and retail establishments, forming an oasis of sun and creativity in the heart of Moses Lake.

This is not a small building and it’s hard to believe it was moved on-site on the back of an old moving truck. Marion remembers thinking people were just trying to pull her leg when they told her stories about the move but, years later, she listened to a recount of the move by Mr. Crawford, and it put any lingering doubts to rest. Mr. Crawford was very proud of the job his company had done.

The building isn’t fancy—no wooden inlays or detailed metal-work. The interior is mostly plaster and pine. What it lacks in flair though, it makes up for in solidity. Over 100 years old, moved to a new foundation, and everything is still strong and sturdy. The floors don’t squeak, all the paint is in good shape, and the woodwork is sound. It’s a tribute to the craftsmanship of the builders that what they created outlasted all of them.

To go along with the buildings age, the furnishings are almost all antiques. The Walker family has a tradition of antiquing that’s left every space filled with interesting tables, chairs, and cabinets. Well-oiled wood pieces settle comfortably throughout the interior, gently adding warmth.

The building’s pioneer spirit is matched by an air of welcoming energy—and after a hundred years of children, guests, and tenants, greeting new people and taking care of them has seeped into the foundation. As a hotel, the original living room was converted into a lobby--the door didn’t have a lock, just a metal door with lettering that spelled out, “White Hotel”. Marion’s parents didn’t see any reason to change that, and strangers would often walk in off the street, perhaps assuming their home was still a business. Luckily, the Walker family enjoyed offering hospitality! After Marion took over the building, she thought a set of locks was a good idea.

Marion Lester is very proud to be the curator of such a fascinating local landmark—when she talks about the history of the building, her eyes gleam and her voice is full of energy. If you walk by, don’t be surprised to see her holding court in the lobby, telling stories and sharing articles about the house and all the people who have been under its sturdy roof.

Homemade Christmas warms the heart

Wishes you a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!

don’t know if the trauma of combat shopping had anything to do with it but in 2002, when we were all still living in Alaska, we took a family vote and decided to go “homemade.” We decided it was the perfect solution to fight against a commercialized Christmas. We declared war on anything plastic. We vowed that all of us would make our gifts that year.

I was very excited about the idea since I’m a creative sort. Plus, I wouldn’t have to fight the crowds. I would be making each of my family members something wonderful and it would be so nice to skip all that endless, expensive shopping. I envisioned warm cozy nights as I worked on my little projects.

It was such a grand idea. Out with commercialism!

No more Made in China plastic junk! The important thing would be going to church, giving thanks for the birth of Christ, and having lots of good food and good times. Maybe, I thought at the time, we could take a walk through the snow and gaze at the enormity of the winter sky. Listen to some music, play some quiet games and just love each other. We’d have a tree, of course, but there wouldn’t be a mountain of presents.

One of the problems was Lisa. Three weeks after helping to come up with this great idea, she declared she didn’t have any talent. She whined that she couldn’t paint, couldn’t sew, couldn’t glue, couldn’t invent, and couldn’t create.

She had three kids at the time who needed to come up with clever ideas for gifts. Her solution was easy:

she foisted two of them off on me. I spent days trying to get past ideas that involved toilet paper rolls, egg cartons, and plaster handprints but it wasn’t easy. My mind kept speeding back to the Salvation Army Thrift Store and the knitting machine they had in a back corner. I was thinking we could buy that hulk of a contraption and the kids could make sweaters. Those thick sweaters with maybe a moose or a bulldozer on the back.

In the end it was probably the best Christmas ever.

My whole kitchen was turned into a shop. Every counter was strewn with paints, canvasses, saws and drills. I spent a whole month building and painting.

Even the littlest tykes made things. One painted a little cupboard and one hand-sewed polar fleece to make pillows. Our daughter Janelle created gorgeous quilts and my son-in-law Rick Boorman bought oak boards and made fabulous sleds for the kids. Even Lisa came through with some amazing gifts.

There was so much love in that Christmas; so much caring and thought and so much excitement. The kids were giddy and were so much more excited to give than to get. We all were. After a month of creating we couldn’t wait to share our gifts.

It is expensive and incredibly time consuming but I truly recommend a homemade Christmas. It’s a blessing you’ll never forget. None of us in our family can remember what we got for Christmas three years ago but all of us remember Christopher’s polar fleece pillows and the tool holder Cody made for his dad out of a dart board cupboard.

Columbia Basin Allied Arts is pleased to once again bring The Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) to Moses Lake from Monday, January 19th through January 24th. Local students K-12 will have the opportunity to participate in this year’s production of “The Wizard of Oz”.

On Sunday, January 18th two MCT tour actor/directors will arrive complete with sets, lights, props, costumes, makeup, and scripts…everything it takes to put on a play. Local students will audition on Monday, January 19th at 3:30 pm and rehearse throughout the week. There are opportunities for 64 students. On Saturday, January 24th there will be two performances open to the public.

While children will be enjoying their week with the Missoula Children’s Theatre, they’ll also be developing critical life skills such as teamwork, communication, social skills and self-discipline.

MCT’s programs increase access to the arts for children between ages 5-18. The performances reinforce the values and goals of our schools by teaching children that hard work, discipline, and listening skills lead to success.

MCT is the nation’s largest touring children’s theatre that has been touring extensively for more than 40 years now from Montana to Japan. This season they will visit nearly 1,200 communities with up to 44 teams of Tour Actor/Directors with everything it takes to put on a play...except the cast. All MCT shows are original adaptations of classic children’s stories and fairytales . . . a twist on the classic stories that you know and love. Creativity, social skills, goal achievement, communication skills and self-esteem are all characteristics that are attained through the participation in these unique, educational projects. MCT’s mission is the development of lifeskills in children through participation in the performing arts.

ayla Lynn, a southern girl who grew up in the heart of Tennessee. Her country bloodlines are undeniable as her grandmother is country-music legend, Loretta Lynn. Her father, Ernie, sang and played guitar in Loretta Lynn’s band. So Tayla’s growing years were centered around her father’s touring schedule.

“I can’t remember a time that I wasn’t in the wings in some town somewhere, watchin’ my Memaw and my daddy on stage” recalls Tayla Lynn. She was 4 or 5 the first time she remembers her Memaw taking her on stage. oices of a New Day celebrated 10 years in the community at their May 2014 concert at the high school. Local businesses generously donated prizes for the children and their families to celebrate the choirs success.

Blue Palm, Dominoes, Car and Dog Wash, Safeway, AIM gymnastics, Texaco Gas, Lake Bowl were just a few of the donors. This community has been so kind to support our program over the last 10 years. We have sung at Parades, every year at spring fest, the Moses Lake Christmas Celebration at the Civic Center, and three concerts a year held at the Moses Lake high school.

I feel so grateful to have had the opportunity to share my love of music with so many of Moses Lake’s youth.

Because of the choirs success, this year we added 20 additional students! This brought the number of choir children up to 60. That is pretty exciting considering we began with a small group of 25 students in 2004.

Voices of a New Day now offers an audition only choir for those students ages 10-13 who would like take the

choir experience to a more challenging level. All classes offer experience following a director, exposure to all types of music, lessons on correct posture and technique, opportunities to sing in small groups or perform solos, basic music theory, chances to learn how to harmonize, plenty of opportunities to perform, and much more!

Classes are offered 3:45-4:30 pm, 4:35-5:15 pm on Thursdays as well as 4:00-4:45 pm on Fridays. Tuition is $40 per month. Voices of a New Day is a community choir that is open to all children ages 5-13 years old. New students will be accepted as space opens in December 2014 for the upcoming Jan-March 2015 season. SAVE THE DATE Miracle on Main Street is a familyfocused event where parents and children are able to celebrate the Christmas season by making crafts, playing games, taking photos with Santa, participating in a downtown fun run, a lighted parade, and new this year – watch a live performance of “A Christmas Carol” play! Below is a timeline of the Miracle on Main Street festivities:

11:00 am – Jingle Bell Fun Run Participants will have a choice of two routes, a 1 mile and a 3 mile route. Registration will begin at 10am on the day of the race with the race beginning promptly at 11am. Pre-Registration for the run is also available. To have a form mailed to you or to find a location near you to pick up a registration form please contact the Ephrata Chamber of Commerce office at 509-754-4656.

Participants are encouraged to “dress the part” and wear holiday attire.

3:00 to 5:00 pm – Christmas Music Downtown Enjoy Christmas music, food, and shopping opportunities in downtown Ephrata. See what your local businesses have to offer for your holiday shopping needs.

12:00 to 3:00 pm – Kids Activities at the ERC Activities will include a variety of crafts and games for children of all ages to participate in.

Santa will be at the ERC and pictures will be available. Just some of the activities include: Christmas bingo, cookie decorating, Christmas card making, Christmas ornament making, and a candy cane walk.

6:00 pm – A Christmas Carol Play Make your way back to the ERC to watch a presentation of a Christmas Carol presented by local children in the community. If you are interested in participating in the play, please contact the City of Ephrata at 509-754-4601.

Fairy Tale Christmas is directed by Stacey Bresee with Jen ClouterSchwartz as assistant director.

Queen Malvinia, played by Cecilia Monda, is being driven crazy by all the Holiday cheer! The former evil stepmother of Snow White’s story has convinced most people that she has reformed. She is after all, the ruler of the kingdom of Happily Ever After!

She has a problem though. Since all the traditional fairy tale characters began getting along, sales for potions on the Queen’s website have fallen off drastically. So, she needs a new way to boost sales. What about ... poisoned mistletoe?

With the help of Cinderella’s stepsisters Ursula (Issy McAvinew) and Lucretia (Krystal Ker), as well as Wolfgang Amadeus Toothful, alias the Big Bad Wolf (Patrick Rosman), the Queen throws a Christmas Eve Party.

Enter, the Three Little Pigs, Trixi (AnLi Guttormsen), Dixi (Ruth Bresee) and Pixi (Addyson Stredwick). They try to keep the mood happy by singing carols and telling corny jokes, but the poisoned mistletoe makes everyone angry at one another. The Queen couldn’t be happier for soon everyone will want her nasty spells and wicked charms. The kingdom will turn into Happily Never After!

Who can help? Unfortunately, Fairy Godmama (Heidi Hendrixson) is at the North Pole assisting Santa since Rudolph is out sick. How about Jack, the Giant Killer? The only problem is Jack is a computer nerd who is afraid of his own shadow and claims killing the Giant was an accident.

Playwright Don Gordon has created an unusual, witty and tenderly evolving relationship between Harry (Clint Pozzi}, a down and out artist who is depressed by a tragic event in his life, and Kathleen (Melissa Sloan), an upper class married woman who turns up at his shabby apartment with an unlikely mission.

Harry normally spends his time playing cards with his clueless friend Jumbo, (Justin Rowland), and drowning his sorrows in cheap beer. Kathleen on the other hand is more comfortable on the golf course or at the country club.

Working for you I am the President of Jerry Moberg & Associates.

My role is to empower my incredible staff of attorneys and support staff to provide top notch legal services to our clients. I also handle part of the attorney case load primarily in the area of employment litigation, civil rights litigation and sexual abuse litigation.

I started as a lawyer in Moses Lake with my dad.

I have been privileged to work for and learn the trial practice from one of the truly great trial attorneys in Washington, Darrell Ries. I was honored to serve Grant County as a Superior Court Judge from 1988 through 1992. I have argued cases at every level, including the United States Supreme Court, the Washington State Supreme Court, the Federal Court of Appeals, the State Court of Appeals, the United States District Courts and the Superior Court in nearly every county in Washington. I have tried over 100 cases to verdict. I have also been fortunate to represent school districts, cities, police departments and counties defending them in state and federal court.

In January of this year I was able to start my own firm. One of our missions is to create programs that allow us to provide affordable legal representation to the middle class, who do not qualify for free legal services with various agencies but cannot really afford to hire an attorney on the traditional market. With the use of paralegals, automated systems, unbundled legal services agreements and soon Limited Legal Licensed Technicians, we are able to serve this unrepresented group.

JM&A takes great pride in the talent and skill that our lawyers and staff have shown in Courts through out Washington. We care passionately about our clients and will work tirelessly to see that each client is treated fairly under the law. We look forward to representing many new clients, the citizens, farmers, ranchers and small business owners in Grant County as our firm grows along with the community.

- After training for and running more than a dozen

marathons, I got bored with running and recently took up boxing. To my surprise boxing is a very difficult sport to learn. It is not just throwing punches. There is a lot of strategy involved in the sport and, of course, fundamentals to learn like mastering proper footwork.

- I also enjoy attending Yo Gabba Gabba! concerts with my daughter.
