Get busy living

W

hat if you wake up some day and you’re way past 50, and you never went swimming in cool lakes all those years because your thighs were jiggly and your bathtub seemed just fine? What if you were just too busy with work and perfectionism and people-pleasing that you forgot to go places and do things. We sometimes forget to capture that very moment called now. The moment when we realize we tend to busy our days with projects that have no apparent pause button and we lose our ability to have fun. The reality is we don’t stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing. It’s time to play in the sun. You don’t have to go far to find it. A brisk walk outdoors is an excellent start to soak in those golden rays. And the jiggly thighs? Well, you may find they jiggle less plus you have a bit of calf muscle you never had before from the loops around the local park. A purposefully planned day in the sunshine will bring new perspective. The reward of

dangling your feet in fresh lake water is a pleasure beyond definition. Floating on an air-mattress or launching a canoe for a gentle glide is a calming way to end a busy day. Or perhaps a vigorous swim to rejuvenate and clear the cobwebs. Go camping. Light a campfire and everyone becomes a storyteller, out loud without facebook or television or camera. Just the glow of the fire and real conversation. Stories that send us back to a childhood of mud pies and playing in sprinklers, canals, and open fields. While under the stars, listen carefully to the words of your children and your grandchildren and you will hear their hearts and hopes for goodness and wonder, For any child, life remains a sea full of curiosity and rich experiences just waiting. Experiences served along with S’mores on the menu of lasting memories.

Have you?

Have you ever played 'King of the Mountain', from the top of a tall sand dune? Or have a running (or rolling) race straight down the steep side and into the water below?

Have you ever gone to 'Sunken Island', where you can put your chair in the water and barbecue from the bow of your boat? Have you ever explored the Potholes Recreation area with over 60 lakes in a 10 mile radius with the Potholes Reservoir being over 28,000 acres of sheer fun? Have you ever fished for trophy bass, walleye and/or rainbow trout? Have you ever noticed the sheer exhilaration of the hundreds of recreational vehicles that visit every year? Come with the sun?

VM. What is your relationship with Moses Lake? How long have you lived here?

while working full time. The opportunity to transition to insurance was appealing for a variety of reasons. CA. I moved to Moses Lake in April 2010 to First, I enjoyed working with individuals, open the Agency. I was born in Washington, D.C., families and small businesses to help them and moved to Quincy at age 4, where I attended achieve their financial goals, and while some areas preschool – 12th grade (1976 to 1990). After of banking offered that, the track I was on was high school graduation, I left to attend college going to lead me to more Corporate clients and a in Caldwell, ID (College of Idaho), then, after lot of business travel. graduation, I moved to Dallas, TX, for one year and Pittsburgh, PA, for 16 years. My mom and Second, I liked the opportunity to be able to step-dad (Judy and Harvey Bryant), still live in move back to Central WA so that our children Quincy, as does my Grandma Maryalys Urey. could grow up enjoying the outdoors and all our VM. What motivated you to choose Insurance area has to offer. Owning an insurance agency, I am planted in our area, whereas many jobs can as a career? force one to move around. CA. While living in Pittsburgh, I worked Third, I liked the freedom that being a business in banking for ten years in a variety of areas owner provides, in terms of being able to attend (Retail Banking, Capital Markets, Finance), and our kids sporting events, dance recitals, etc. completed my MBA at University of Pittsburgh

“Do the right thing. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.” - Mark Twain

VM. What is your favorite component of the profession you chose? What is the biggest challenge? CA. My favorite thing about being an insurance agent is that I provide a service that helps our clients pursue their goals and protects what is important to them. I also like that I get to stay in our community almost every day, so I am accessible to our clients. The main challenge is that our area is large, and I need to inspect any home or business that we insure, so there are days when I am driving from Creston to Mattawa to take property photos! VM. Tell us about the community service in our community you are involved in and why? What is your role? CA. Kiwanis Club of Moses Lake, President (2016-2017), Board Member (2011-present) Our

club focuses on serving children both locally and worldwide through service projects and fundraising; Volunteer with the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, administered through Aging & Adult Care (2012-present). Provide advocacy for residents of Nursing Homes, Adult Family Homes, and Assisted Living Facilities (many residents do not have family who visits regularly, and we fill this gap by making sure the residents’ rights are protected). Strategy and Finance Committee member, Samaritan Healthcare (2015-present). Assist the Board of Directors by providing input from the community as well as providing external communication of Samaritan’s work to improve our population’s health throughout Grant County. VM. What do you enjoy on your days off?

CA. Being an insurance agent is more of a lifestyle than a 9-5 job. I generally work 6 days a week, and my clients know that they can text or email me any time with questions or requests. My favorite Sunday activities are spending time with VM. What are your interests other than my family, including outdoor activities, travel, professional business and community service? and cooking. I like to cook recipes from every CA. Ronin Training (a combination of CrossFit part of the world. My current favorite cookbook and parkour), is my obsession. The age range in is Senegal by Pierre Thiam. the class I attend is 10-70. We each work at our VM. What is your favorite summertime own level of strength, flexibility, and agility, but follow the same workout plan. At the top level, it activity in the Columbia Basin? is very similar to American Ninja Warrior. It is a CA. Hiking. Some favorites are north of fun way to get and stay fit! Odessa, Ancient Lakes, the Wildlife Refuge. I also read a lot and play acoustic blues on VM. Where in the world would you like to guitar. I take lessons from Scott Okerlund here in visit? Why? town. Maybe someday I’ll progress to the point that I will want to play for family and friends, but CA. Top of my Bucket List is Australia/New it is a great way to unwind. Zealand and Argentina. The first two are for the

natural beauty. Argentina is for the food, culture, to explore the regions and maybe see a soccer match. I speak Spanish and am a Soccer fanatic! VM. What is your most cherished accomplishment? How did it affect your life? CA. Aside from becoming a father to three great kids, and husband to a fantastic wife, my greatest accomplishment was to be able to move back to our area and have a job that I love and be able to provide for my family. When I moved to Pittsburgh, it was to pursue a Ph.D. in Philosophy and a career in academia. After four years of grad school, I realized that that was not the right career for me, and had to start over. It took another ten years of working and studying to get to a point where companies started approaching me with opportunities to move back here and build a long-term career. That was a long slog!

VM. Who inspires you the most to accomplish even more? CA. My clients. Most of them have much harder jobs than I do, and I am grateful that they put their trust in me and allow me to provide employment for our awesome staff. VM. How do you define community? CA. One of the things I loved about growing up in Quincy was that we were all immigrants. There were about five people there before the water came, and everyone who came there was looking for an opportunity to make a life for themselves and their families. To me, a community is that feeling -- that we are all new arrivals and that our community is open to everyone. It has stuck with me. All you have to do is be honest and hard-working, and I consider you a friend.

urn off your phone, leave the house, know your neighbors, greet people, look up when you’re walking, sit on your doorstep, plant flowers, use your library, play together, buy from local stores, share what you have, take children to the park, support your local schools, fix it - even if you didn’t break it, have potlucks, grow flowers, pick up litter with the kids, read stories aloud, talk to the postman, listen to the birds, put up a

swing, help carry something heavy, start a tradition, hire young people for odd jobs, volunteer, bake extra and share, ask for help when you need it, open your curtains and blinds, be in awe of the sunset, share your skills, turn up the music, mediate a conflict, seek to understand, learn from new and uncomfortable angles, know that no one is silent though many are not heard, work to change this.

Being stretched beyond expected,

Darin and Amy Hendrickson share their gratitude By Amy Hendrickson

A

gri-Fix was established by Darin and one service truck in 1995 which has now grown to a full diesel repair shop with complete towing services around the clock. Bee Line Frame and Axle was established in the mid 1950’s as a family owned and operated business. Although the business is now owned by Darin and Amy Hendrickson, it is still family owned and operated with all the same great services and more. On December 28, 2016, around 6:00 pm, the unexpected happened. We got the call that our long standing business within our community of Bee Line Frame and Axle was on fire. The building housed customer vehicles, tow trucks, and our precious classic car collection. The emotions began to run in so many directions. As I sat there crying and feeling helpless, we could see it all happening: the fire fighters were working fast and hard despite the difficulties faced due to the cold weather conditions, that team of employees came to pitch in however they could, family came from all directions to give their support, and then there was the community – OUR CUSTOMERS! People were showing up in ways that I would never have imagined. They offered so much love and support.

I remembered something that God whispered to me one time when I was feeling overly stretched and defeated. He said to me, “Imagine trying to use a rubber band without stretching it.” I reflected on that for a moment. I remembered that each time I am stretched beyond what I think I can handle; I bounce back much stronger than before I was ever stretched. This was still true with this tragic event. Bee Line lost several pieces of equipment and tools but our customer vehicles and classic cars all survived. Although we are still repairing the damage to these items and replacing lost and damaged tools, we are on the home stretch of the building renovation. Bee Line will be even better than it was before. It will still provide top notch services but with a bigger heart and desire to give back to this community that was so gracious to support us and continue utilizing the services we have been able to provide during this process. Keep your eyes open for our grand reopening soon to come. We are aiming for the first week in July. Thank you so much to all our friends, family and community members that have been a part of this restoration process!

A boxed lunch So much more than delicious food can be packed in one.

A

ccording to Jan Thacker, one of the owners of Moses Lake’s Red Door Café, one of her favorite things to do is help pack boxed lunch orders. “It sounds crazy but I love helping with a boxed lunch order…putting on the Red Door stickers just-so, settling in condiments and napkins, adding the sides and cookie and, finally, sliding in the paper-wrapped sandwiches. “If I was on the other end I’d be crazy excited to open one of these boxes. Maybe it’s because I always ate lunch at school, prepared by scowling cooks who watched to make sure you put your dirty utensils in the right pan and scraped your dirty plate and stacked it neatly. I never had the pleasure of having a mom-stuffed lunch in a cool lunchbox. “When my kids were in school they ate in the cafeteria a lot also, but would sometimes carry a lunch box with a Holly Hobby, Spiderman, or other popular motif. They were always---unless we were running late – packed with love and I almost always tucked in a nice note. “Maybe we should do that with our Red Door boxed lunches; add a note: “Have a great day!” “Keep your chin up!” “Hang on, things will be super duper soon.” “Just remember, Saturday’s just around the corner.” “I love you. And I’m SO proud of you!!!” A lot of us could use an upbeat lunchbox note like that!”

In partnership with Red Door Café, the tiny location in the lobby next to the pharmacy, gives customers almost everything that the café downtown offers: espresso, two panini choices, the full array of cold sandwiches, fresh-baked desserts, homemade soups and salads, and much more. The café was integrated into the remodel of the lobby of Samaritan Clinic. Watch for details on the upcoming grand opening of the new beautiful lobby.

Protein from a Plant? What is a plant based diet? 60 | thevenuemag.com

by Danette Preston, Operation Manager

Y

ou may have heard the buzz about a ‘Plant Based Diet’ or Plant Based Eating. Have you wondered what all the hype is, and if you should care? Whether you are completely content with your current diet or have a real desire to eat healthier food, Plant-based eating is worthy of your consideration. We all know there’s something terribly wrong with the overall health of our nation. Cancer rates, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and so many other conditions are rampant. You very likely know someone with a serious health issue or even have one yourself. What is going on here? Sure, we know genetics play a small part in it, but it is an undeniable fact that what we consume has an enormous impact on our health. Research tells us that consuming a diet heavy in animal proteins & processed foods, and light in plant proteins will increase your risk of developing many chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease, breast cancer; The list goes on! Your food choices can harm you or heal you. Now consider plants! Green foods supply essential fatty acids, amino acids, and trace minerals that are critical for life and optimal function.
