through the year and there’s no sign of slowing. One day we’re worried if Snoqualmie Pass will be clear, and the next day school is out, pools are open, lakes are warm(er) and it’s time to start thinking about the holidays.

I’ve traveled all around the state this year from Westport to Spokane and Vancouver WA to Vancouver BC. Everywhere I’ve gone, with family, friends or work, I’ve brought along pieces of the Basin with me. I love gifting local goods, like a chilled marsanne, jars of buckwheat honey from B Safe Products, or wooden spoons I found in a flower shop in Wilbur - each one hand carved and so special. Folks are amazed that such delicious, beautiful products come out of our shrub steppe, and I’m happy to surprise them.

Along with amazing products, we have incredible events happening all over the region and all summer long. Of course, this edition rides on the Moses Lake Roundup Rodeo! family and how they’re continuing the multi-generational work to bring forward their Native American heritage, heal what divides them from their ancestors, and nurture a future where Indigenous knowledge is centered and celebrated.

The Salish language stretches across the Columbia Plateau and beyond, through what is now Washington, Oregon, British Columbia, and Montana. It carries generations of knowledge, teaching, identity, and connection to both land and family. It lives through those who speak it, learn it, and raise their children within it.

For Charlie and Loryn Joseph, the Salish language is not just communication - it is a way of understanding the world.

While Charlie and Loryn are not fluent Salish speakers, they often hear the voices of their ancestors and desire to express themselves through it. “Throughout my relationship with Loryn, there have been many times I’ve felt a deep longing to express my love for her in our language,” Charlie said, “Because, to me, in my heart and my soul, our language holds so much more meaning than anything the English language could possibly amount to. If I could profess my love for her in our native language, then our ancestors and the spirits of our lands could understand just how deeply I am in love with her.”

The couple became friends after a Native-led yoga class hosted by Cloudview Kitchen in Soap Lake, where Loryn was working after returning home from playing collegiate soccer at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. At the time, Charlie was working as a fisheries biologist with the Colville Tribes Fish and Wildlife Department, based

out of Nespelem. Charlie would make the hour-plus drive from Nespelem to Soap Lake regularly. After a year, their relationship grew, and eventually so did their family. Shared priorities guide the couple through life and parenting: their story is one of community, responsibility, identity, connection to land, and leading with love.

The desire to live in a traditional way has shaped much of their life together. It is present in how they raise their children, how they create, and how they engage with their community. Between Charlie and Loryn, their children are proud descendants of the šnp̍əšqʷáw̉ šəxʷ (Wenatchi), škwáxčənəxʷ (Moses-Columbia), sʔukʷnaʔqín (Okanogan), sx̌ ʷýʔłpx, (Colville), sn̓ ʕay̓ čkstx (Arrow Lakes), sńpʕawílx (Sanpoil), nspiləm (Nespelem), palúspam (Palus), wal’wáma (Nez Perce), schitsu’umsh (Coeur d’Alene), imatalamłáma (Umatilla, Jamestown and Port Gamble s’kallalum), and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Sioux) peoples.

Together, they are raising two daughters: Cyxʷitkʷ (Waterfall) and x̌ ʷnámtalqs (Hummingbird Dress). “We introduce our daughters with their given names because every time someone speaks their names, they are speaking a language that was nearly lost,” Loryn said, “Their names represent the resilience of our ancestors. Naming them in our language was important to us. We want our children to feel strong in who they are and where they come from.”

Cyxʷitkʷ, the eldest, almost three years old, loves riding horses, gathering roots, picking berries, shooting her bow, fishing, dancing, and taking part in her traditions.

Her younger sister, x̌ ʷnámtalqs, almost one, recently began walking and eagerly follows her sister in everything she does. “Both really embody their names,” Loryn said, “x̌ ʷnámtalqs is named after her paternal grandmother, who is also the girls’ best friend.”

Language loss in Indigenous communities is directly tied to the brutal history of residential and boarding schools whose policies removed Native children from their families and punished the use of Native languages and practices.

Native children were abused in these schools, many remain there in unmarked graves, and almost all Indigenous families from Canada and the United States continue to address and heal from intergenerational trauma caused by these programs.

Charlie’s grandfather, Andrew Joseph Sr., attended the Chemawa Indian School in Oregon, and was one of many survivors between the couple’s families. Like many survivors, he did not initially pass the language on to his children in an effort to protect them from the harm he had experienced. Later in life, he felt the need to help preserve what he knew, and so recorded language lessons on cassette tapes and writing materials including his book titled ‘The County of Sen-om-tuse’ (snʔamtus), which continue to be used for learning today.

miƛ̓ m̓ ART “What’s beautiful about today is the surge in Native representation across a multitude of platforms,” Loryn said, “Including traditional and contemporary art, music, poetry, books, sports, science, health care, land management practices, and more. Everyone should support Indigenous art and wisdom because we all benefit from it.”

For the Joseph family, art, like language, is inseparable from identity and culture. “Our whole culture is art,” Loryn said. “Many Indigenous people come from families of weavers, singers, drummers, beadworkers, and dancers.”

Charlie, Loryn, Cyxʷitkʷ and x̌ ʷnámtalqs have danced traditionally throughout their lives, and the whole family is engaged in learning from artists, teachers, and relatives.

Together, they created Huckleberry Honey, a creative space where they share and sell their work, including traditional baby boards, ribbon skirts, shirts, wing dresses, beadwork, regalia, dentalium jewelry, painted drums, basket hats, and other traditional and contemporary pieces.

Charlie and Loryn continue to learn while also sharing their knowledge with family and community. They are currently partnering with Colville Tribal Behavioral Health program to host a traditional baby board making workshop this summer.

K̓ łslntim SERVICE “In our teachings, the Creator has given everyone a gift to share with others,” said Charlie, “Those gifts can be revealed in many ways - through time in nature, ceremony, service, etc. Our people, and the youth especially, need more opportunities to develop and share those gifts with the world.”

Loryn added, “Native Americans, with everything that has been taken from us and done to us, experience some of the highest suicide rate of any race in the United States. We carry generational trauma and face continued hardships that can feel overwhelming.” For the family, this understanding is deeply personal after the loss of her 17-year-old brother, Ambrose Moore. “When my brother was at his happiest, he was hunting, fishing, and providing for elders, other families, friends, and more,” she said, “Providing gave him a purpose.

It was his gift he shared with everyone. It gave him joy.”

Loryn recently completed a 10-week, Indigenous-led program through the Northwest Native Development Fund, that took participants through the process of creating a business plan, analyzing markets, and making a pitch. Loryn and her business partner, Mirella Whalawista, plan to follow through with their pitch to establish their business, Abalone

Tmxʷulaxʷ LAND Charlie has continued his work as a biologist, focused on habitat restoration. “We are here to honor the land and keep it healthy for seven generations,” he said, “Everything has a spirit. It is not something to use and discard… it is something you are in relationship with.” His work restoring fish habitat reflects teachings that have long guided Indigenous stewardship of land and water.

For many years, Charlie worked for the Chief Joseph Kokanee Enhancement Project (CJKEP), which is a part of the Resident Fish Division of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation - Fish and Wildlife Department.

The CJKEP goal is to protect and enhance the population of Kokanee salmon. Kokanee salmon are a freshwater species of salmon who do not return to the ocean as most salmon do, and are native to the Pacific Northwest.

“Our tribes, along with the Spokane Tribe of Indians and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, comanage the Lake Roosevelt Fisheries,” he said, “We work to protect the populations of native species, supplement the fisheries with hatchery supplementation, and suppress invasive species that are detrimental to the native species.”

For a little over a year, Charlie has been working as a senior biologist for the Lake Roosevelt Habitat Improvement Project. The goal of the project is to assess, protect, and restore fish habitat in reaches within the Sanpoil River and Upper Columbia River watersheds in an effort to improve the population of redband rainbow trout.

We often day dream of gardens in every home in our area, of native and endangered species thriving, of buffalo returning, more food co-ops, markets, community centers, holistic healing centers, birth centers, and so many other ideas. You can ride a dirt bike? But, can you ride a dirt bike in a Clover pattern? It might not be as easy as you think.

Riders enter the arena to race one at a time, with times recorded much like the rodeo horse racing event. Each rider must make three 360 degree turns throughout the clover pattern, with the option to enter the barrel pattern either to the right or left, as the rider chooses, also like the horse event.

Unlike a horse, a dirt bike only has two feet… or wheels rather, and no muscles… just torque, to get around the barrels. This often slows down even the best of riders, and is the crowd’s most exciting moment of the event. The straight portions between barrels are the dirt bike’s sweet

spot, while the soft and slippery corners don’t offer much traction for the wheels.

Dirt bike barrel racing was added to the Miner Services Demo Derby in 2024 to bring more diversity to the day’s events, said Columbia Basin Rodeo Association Vice President, and organizer of the Demo Derby, Aaron Schrodt. It will take place on Tuesday, August 18 this year. The Derby is working on the final schedule with collaborators Experience Motorsports.

breakaway roping: a roping career path for women

Breakaway Roping is the fastest rodeo sport in the arena. In April of this year, Shania Johnston, had an incredible, likely all-time record with a staggering 1.29-second run.

Breakaway roping is a relatively new professional rodeo career path for women. In 2019 it was introduced at The American, a one-day rodeo event in Texas. Nearly 500 women qualified for the inaugural event, competed for a $110,000 first place purse, and put the sport on the map. Prior to this, roping opportunities for women stopped professionally after college level rodeo, and the only event for women in amateur and professional rodeo was barrel racing.

Breakaway roping was added to the Moses Lake Roundup in 2021. Roundup Rodeo Committee Member Buck Naff said that adding the event has not only increased the opportunities for women, but also made the rodeo a

more inclusive environment for families when both adults in a family can compete. “I had a calf tiedown roper tell me, ‘Thank you for including breakaway roping because now my wife and I can travel from Texas together, and compete in your rodeo together,’” he said.

Breakaway roping starts with a calf in a chute at one side of the area, and the roper in the start box to the calf’s right. When the calf is released it engages the start box and allows the roper to gallop after, and rope, her calf. The “bell collar catch” is the only legal catch, requiring the rope to pass over the calf’s head and come tight on its neck behind the ears. After the calf is roped, the rider must stop her horse, breaking a string attached between her rope and saddle horn. The clock stops when the string is pulled.

A good breakaway horse is quick-footed, has speed, a big stop, and can handle the pressure of the start box.

tom dent: a rodeo champion

The Moses Lake Roundup Rodeo has changed a lot since the 1960s. State Representative of District 12, Tom Dent, would know… because he was riding broncs in the arena.

More than half a century later, Representative Dent still lives near Moses Lake, managing his ranch raising buffalo and growing hay.

“Moses Lake Roundup is just improving every year, and I remember back in the 60s and 70s bucking horses riding there, and it wasn’t the same. They just keep getting better and better, working hard – from the folks that are selling advertising, to the committee managing the rodeo, to the volunteers out in the field - I can’t say enough about them. And it’s going to continue to improve, too,” Representative Dent said.

Representative Dent isn’t just a champion of the rodeo and the agricultural community in words. In the last 5 years, he has received recognition from the Washington Cattleman’s Association, Washington Association of Agriculture Educators, Washington State Tree Fruit

Association, Ag-Forestry, Yakima-Klickitat Farm Association and the Moses Lake Roundup Rodeo thanks to his legislative work and beyond. For the Roundup, Representative Dent has been integral in several recent improvements to the arena, which is owned by Grant County, including new venue lights installed in 2021 and new bleachers that were finished for the 2025 rodeo.

Representative Dent echos a common thread about the rodeo - that it’s a family. “It’s a way of life, a friendship, a family,” he said, “So many life lessons I’ve learned bucking horses back in the day that I remember, some of the most important people to my heart came out of rodeo. It’s who we are.”

kaylee stump: on the campaign trail to miss rodeo washington

Kaylee Stump is in the second year of her reign as Moses Lake Rodeo Queen, but she is in a very different place, and it’s a very different year. In 2024 Kaylee competed against two talented girls for the title - this year she was offered the position. After juggling her work and school obligations, and expectations from the Moses Lake Rodeo Committee, Kaylee signed up for another year of championing the rodeo and agricultural communities on behalf of Moses Lake.

Along with her rodeo obligations, Kaylee has been finishing up esthetician school in the Tri-Cities, and is focused on getting state licensed this year. She works with her family on their still-burgeoning cattle business. “Our cattle business is up and running! Not too big, but we have a few cows that are getting ready to be butchered and sold, and our heifer is pregnant!” Kaylee said. She also bought a 6-year-old gelding, Gator, that needs broken and trained!

“I’m thankful I took this opportunity, that God pushed

me to do it a second year. And, that the Committee pushed me to run for Miss Rodeo Washington!” Kaylee said, “I like having a small rodeo who I represent, a small town and a small community - but after a little bit of talking and support from the Moses Lake Committee, I decided to turn in my application.”

Her application has been officially accepted into the state-wide competition: contestants must adhere to strict standards, including being between 21 and 25 years old, no children, no husband, no criminal record and must have previously earned a PRCA royalty title.

Now that she’s in the running, Kaylee will be spending time getting ready for the pageant, including raising money and selling raffle tickets for the pageant, studying the rodeo and equine health, and getting her choice of horses, her brother’s horse Buzz, pageant ready.

gone but not forgotten William “Bill” West

Born to Merle “Windy” West, a respected rodeo announcer and CBRA member, and Dorothy West, Bill was raised in Moses Lake.

He married his high school sweetheart, Lucinda. Bill served as Roundup Secretary (1988-92) and Director (1993– 95). Bill was honored as the Moses Lake Roundup Man of the Year in 2008 in recognition of his commitment to rodeo, the fair, and the Columbia Basin community. He left a lasting legacy and will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his rodeo family.

Marvin “George” Whitney

Marvin “George” Whitney was born in Sunnyside, Washington, to Marvin and Iris Whitney and moved to Moses Lake during elementary school.

George and his wife, Lisa, raised their daughters, Pauline and Rose, while enjoying many years involved in team and jackpot roping. George became an active member of the Moses Lake Roundup Association in 1980, served as Secretary (1984-87), Director (1988-92), Vice President (1990), and President.

He led the installation of the tunnel on the south end of the arena. George’s leadership, dedication, and unwavering support will be remembered and appreciated for generations to come.

Paul Kersey

Dale Hendricks

Paul Kersey was a true cowboy, leader, friend, and proud member of the ancestral Fugarwee Tribe.

He devoted his life to his family, community, and the western way of life.

He married Cathy, and together raised three sons and a daughter. He was active in local 4-H, horse clubs, team and jackpot roping, and mentored many along the way. Paul joined the CBRA in 1973, helped develop the Demo Derby in 1970, served as Director (1975-92), Vice President (1974-75), President (1993-96), and was instrumental in the development of the Timed Event Center and mezzanine. Paul’s hard work, generosity, and dedication to rodeo will never be forgotten.

Dale Hendricks passed on early this year, just three months shy of his 95th birthday. He was a CBRA member from 1965-75 and a valued part of rodeo operations. He served in the US Air Force and was a lifelong rancher and horseman. Those who knew him best found a deeply kind, hard working, loyal and generous man.

Dale overcame a difficult childhood after being orphaned at a young age during the Great Depression. He is survived by his son Dave, daughter Pam, two granddaughters, and one greatgranddaughter. Dale will be deeply missed and remembered fondly by his friends, especially those who gathered in his famous ‘tack room’.

The Moses Lake Roundup family mourns the unexpected passing of our dear friend Dr. Daniel Hansen. Over 20 years, Dan served as a Board Member, Marketing and Sponsorship Director, and as the caring hands behind our Sports Medicine program. He was Committee Member of the year in 2018. His love for rodeo was evident in everything he did, and will be remembered for his generous heart, unwavering work ethic, calm demeanor, and willingness to help anyone in need. Social Security is often one of the most important income sources in retirement. Yet widespread myths about how it works can lead to confusion, unnecessary worry and poor planning decisions. Here’s the truth behind five of the most common misconceptions.

Myth 1: Social Security is going broke. You’ve probably heard this one, but the full picture is more nuanced. According to the 2026 Social Security Board of Trustees Report, if Congress does nothing, the program would need to reduce benefits starting in 2032, paying roughly 78 cents for every dollar owed.

But that’s just one scenario. Congress could raise the combined payroll tax from 12.4% to 16.65%, which the trustees estimate would secure full benefits through 2100. Other options include eliminating the earnings cap subject to payroll tax or adjusting retirement ages. Lawmakers have tools to address this.

Myth 2: Social Security will cover all your retirement needs.

Think of Social Security as a financial foundation, not the full building. According to the Social Security Administration, benefits replace only about 40% of pre-retirement income for a median earner. That means you’ll likely need to account for most of your retirement income yourself. Building a strong personal savings strategy now can help close that gap.

Myth 5: Social Security benefits are no longer taxed. Recent legislation caused some confusion here. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act did not eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits. If your combined income exceeds certain thresholds, you’ll still owe taxes on a portion of your benefits.

The law also created a temporary deduction (available through 2028) for people 65 and older. Eligible taxpayers can deduct $6,000 per qualifying filer if their modified adjusted gross income is $75,000 or less for singles or $150,000 for couples. The deduction phases out at $175,000 for singles and $250,000 for joint filers.

Sometimes, something special begins and it feels like it always was, or at least should have been, there all along.

This spring, Aubree Skone teamed up with partner, Chezni Woods, and with the encouragement of Sagecliffe Resort president and CEO Vince Coluccio, created Sagecliffe Horseback.

It’s an opportunity, Aubree said, to pay forward the wonderful gifts given her over the years, from the simple joy of riding, to financial success, to the confidence and authenticity that makes her such a radiant being. “My stepfather is the reason I’m here... I’m doing what Randy did for me, but times 1,000. I get to give people access to horses they wouldn’t have had before,” Aubree said.

Not only did Randy teach Aubree all she knows about training competitive horses and rodeos, he also passed on unexpectedly, which brought Aubree back to Warden to be with her family.

Chezni was born and raised in Lewiston, ID, “I have always been on the back of a horse,” she said. Like Aubree, she, too, rodeos, and trains competitive horses. The connection between the two partners goes back many years, but before starting the business, they had not really met, and instead were vouched for by friends and family. “I now have an even bigger view of [Sagecliffe Horseback] than coming in - I’m really really excited all the time out there. We’ve always got ideas building bigger things,” she says of their successful partnership and business.

With over 150 rides in the first few months of their first season, the experience speaks for itself. “When [riders] get there, they are always more impressed, more blown away and happier than what they expected. They are more comfortable than they expected. We blow expectations away!” Chezni said. Both partners acknowledge that it’s not only their expertise and communication that make the experience great, it’s also the views of the Columbia River Gorge, and, of course, the horses.

“Five to 10 minutes into the ride, [the riders] transform.

They comment on the ride, the land, the feeling. They say it’s the best experience of their life. They say it transforms the stresses of their lives - it’s energy transforming,” Aubree said. She explains that the other things in one’s life are no longer as important, because, “With a horse you’re asked to be present, for snakes, etc., and so you’re only thinking about your horse… and the views of Sagecliffe.”

Rides are available Tuesday - Sunday, and can be booked online. Their season will conclude for the year in September. Even if you don’t book a ride, the Sagecliffe Horseback corral is right by Tendrils Restaurant at Sagecliffe Resort, and you might catch a glimpse, or even get to say hello to Aubree, Chezni and their other partners, Wayne, Money, Jasmine and Dex! Yes… those are horses!

At the end of the Artemis II mission around the moon and further than any humans had traveled in space before, upon entry, the atmospheric heat shield would get Orion, the spacecraft, down to 350 mph, far from the desired 17 mph landing speed.

So, at 24,000 ft the parachute deployment sequence began. First, ‘forward bay cover parachutes’ lifted off the cover to expose the rest of the hardware. Next, two mortar-deployed ‘drogue parachutes’, each about 23 ft in diameter and made of nylon, stabilized and decelerated the spacecraft to about 150 mph. Finally, the three ‘pilot parachutes’, 9 ft in diameter, were deployed and lifted up the three main parachutes which are about 300 pounds and 11,000 ft² each, all of which are also made of nylon.

Flight software deploys the first parachutes all the way down through the main parachutes, but the crew has the ability to manually command the chutes, all according to Jared Daum, the parachute system manager for Artemis II, in an interview with AFP. General Dynamics, which has been at its Moses Lake location for over 20 years, built the propulsion system that deployed the parachutes. Those who worked on the project took one giant leap further - they were allowed to record their names onto a drive that was on Orion as it made its historical trip around the moon.

It is spectacular that a small part of this triumph was made in Moses Lake, our region’s historic aviation center still has a piece of the action. It’s something to be proud of, something that connects us in a small part, to the entire nation, working together to achieve something great.
