Dear Friends,
We are so excited to welcome GRAMMY-winning guitarist Sharon Isbin to the stage this weekend for our Viva Venice! concert. This vibrant program promises passion, color, and extraordinary artistry, and we are thrilled to share this unforgettable experience with you.
February is an eventful month at The Venice Symphony, filled with music that brings people together in meaningful ways. Later this month, we hope you’ll celebrate someone special with our next Soundscapes Chamber Series concert, Salut D’amour, on February 15 at the Venice Community Center. Then, on February 27 and 28, let us transport you to the magic of the movies with Lights, Camera, Music! featuring guest artist Roger Wilkie.
At the end of the month, we are also proud to welcome students from across our community to the Venice Performing Arts Center for our annual Symphony in the Schools event. This special program offers young people the opportunity to experience the power of live music at an early age, and we hope it inspires a lifelong love of the arts.
We are equally thrilled that our Big Band series is off in full swing, literally! On March 7, internationally acclaimed trombonist and jazz artist Wycliffe Gordon headlines the concert bringing energy, excitement, and unforgettable sound to our stage. You won’t want to miss a moment of the fun.

CONCERT NOTES

España
España is the most famous orchestral composition by French composer Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894). Written in 1883 after a trip to Spain, it was dedicated to the conductor Charles Lamoureux, who conducted the first public performance on November 4, 1883, at the Théâtre du Château d’Eau for the Société des Nouveaux Concerts in Paris. Although at first Chabrier worked on the piece for piano duet, this evolved into a work for full orchestra. Composed between January and August 1883, it was originally called Jota but this became España in October 1883. Encored at its first performance, and received well by the critics, it sealed Chabrier’s fame overnight. Chabrier’s España inaugurated the vogue for hispanically flavored music.
España is also the basis of the melody of the 1956 American popular song “Hot Diggity (Dog Ziggity Boom)” by Al Hoffman and Dick Manning.

Danzón No. 2
Arturo Márquez (born December 20, 1950) is a Mexican composer of orchestral music who incorporates the musical forms and styles of his native Mexico into his compositions. His best known work is Danzón No. 2. Márquez is a popular composer among the Latin American public and is widely recognized as one of the most important Mexican composers of his generation. Márquez began composing at the age of 16 and attended the Mexican Music Conservatory, where he studied piano and music theory from 1970 to 1975. In the U.S., he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and in 1990 obtained an MFA in composition from California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. Since its premiere in in 1994, Danzón No. 2 has gained such international attention it is dubbed Mexico’s second national anthem.
A short film of the same name was made in 2009 by Mexican filmmaker Guillermo Ortiz Pichardo, using the piece in a Fantasia-like style. Set in Mexico City in the 1940s, the golden age of danzón, it is an homage to the Mexican cinema of the period. Arturo Márquez is featured in a cameo as the pianist in a dance hall.
CONCERT NOTES

Concierto de Aranjuez
Joaquín Rodrigo (November 22, 1901July 6, 1999), was a Spanish composer and a virtuoso pianist. He is best known for composing Concierto de Aranjuez, a cornerstone of the classical guitar repertoire. Rodrigo was born in Sagunto, Province of Valencia. At the age of three, he lost his sight completely after contracting diphtheria. At the age of eight he began to study solfège (a mnemonic used in teaching aural skills, pitch and sight-reading of Western music.), piano, and violin and, from the age of 16, he studied harmony and composition. He wrote his compositions in Braille, later transcribed for publication. Although distinguished by having raised the Spanish guitar to a universal concert instrument and being best known for his guitar music, he never mastered playing the instrument. His most famous work, the Concierto de Aranjuez, was composed in 1939 in Paris for the guitarist Regino Sainz de la Maza. The composition is a concerto for guitar and orchestra. The central adagio movement is one of the most recognizable in twentieth-century classical music, featuring the interplay of guitar with cor anglais (English horn).
Aranjuez has been interpreted by many worldwide recording artists, across many genres, including Chick Corea, Al Jarreau, Sarah Brightman, Herb Alpert, Carlos Santana, Manfred Mann, and even Led Zeppelin, among others.
El amor brujo: Ritual Fire Dance
Manuel de Falla (November 22, 1876-November 14, 1946) was a Spanish composer and pianist, and was one of Spain’s most important musicians of the first half of the 20th century, although the number of pieces he composed was relatively modest. El amor brujo, (commonly translated as “Love, the sorcerer” but more accurately as “Bewitching Love”) is a ballet commissioned as a gitanería, (danced Gypsy entertainment), in 1914 dedicated to the flamenco dancer and cantaora Pastora Imperio. It was finished the next year but its premiere, proved unsuccessful. By 1924 de Falla had evolved El amor brujo into the one-act ballet pantomímico best known today. It premiered in America on March 17, 1927.

CONCERT NOTES
Huapango
José Pablo Moncayo (June 29, 1912-June 16, 1958) was a Mexican pianist, percussionist, music teacher, composer and conductor. As a composer, he represents one of the most important legacies of Mexican nationalism in music, producing some of the masterworks that best symbolize the essence of the national aspirations and contradictions of Mexico in the 20th century. Admitted to the National Conservatory in 1929, in order to finance his studies, he worked as a jazz pianist. In the summer of 1942, Moncayo was granted a scholarship from the Rockefeller Foundation to study at the Berkshire Music Institute, known today as the Tanglewood Music Center. Moncayo is best known as the composer of Huapango, a bright, short orchestral arrangement of popular dances from the eastern state of Veracruz which premièred on August 15, 1941 at the Palacio de Bellas Artes by the Symphony Orchestra of Mexico. He also played a relevant role on the national stage during his conducting career (1944–1954). Moncayo’s death in 1958 tangibly marked the end of the Mexican nationalist composition school.

Suite from Coco
Michael Giacchino, (born October 10, 1967) is an American film, television, and video game score composer. He has received many accolades for his work, including an Academy Award for up (2009), an Emmy for Lost (2004), and three GRAMMY Awards. His film scores include the Mission: Impossible and Star Trek franchises, eight Pixar Animation Studios films, and multiple Disney films. He also composed the video game scores for Medal of Honor and Call of Duty, and the TV series Alias and Fringe. Giacchino composed the score for Coco, a 2017 American animated fantasy comedy-drama film, inspired by the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead. Produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures, the indearing story follows a 12-year-old boy in Mexico named Miguel who is accidentally transported to the Land of the
CONCERT NOTES
Dead, where he seeks the help of his deceased musician great-great-grandfather to return him to his family and reverse their ban on music. The first film to feature an all-Latino principal cast, Coco premiered on October 20, 2017, during the Morelia (Mexico) International Film Festival, then released in theaters in Mexico the following week, the weekend before Día de Muertos, and in the United States on November 22, 2017. The film received acclaim for its animation, voice acting, music, visuals, emotional story, and respect for Mexican culture. Coco received two awards at the 90th Academy Awards and numerous other accolades.
In 2009, Giacchino was asked to conduct the Academy Awards orchestra for the 81st Academy Awards. For this project, he rearranged many famous movie themes in different styles, including a 1930s Big Band treatment of Lawrence of Arabia and a Bossa Nova version of Moon River.
Capriccio espagnol

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (March 18, 1844-June 21, 1908) was a Russian composer, a member of the group of composers known as The Five. His best-known orchestral compositions, Capriccio Espagnol, the Russian Easter Festival overture, and the symphonic suite Scheherazade, are staples of the classical music repertoire, along with suites and excerpts from some of his fifteen operas. Capriccio espagnol, Op. 34, is the common Western title for a five-movement orchestral suite, based on Spanish folk melodies, which premiered on October 31, 1887, in St. Petersburg, performed by the Imperial Orchestra conducted by the composer. Rimsky-Korsakov originally intended to write the work for a solo violin with orchestra, but later decided that a purely orchestral work would do better justice to the lively melodies.
The fourth movement was featured in a 1998 Pizza Hut TV commercial, starring the former leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev.

SUPPORT THE SYMPHONY
Your personal investment is the reason The Venice Symphony delivers exceptional concerts and affordable music education. Together, musical excellence is sustained and lives transformed.
Annual Fund – The Venice Symphony’s primary source of operating revenue and outreach. Contributions may be given monthly, quarterly or annually.
Donor Advised Funds and iRA Distributions – A contribution from an IRA or DAF is an excellent way to achieve your charitable giving objectives. *
Employee Match – Many corporations will match their current employee’s or retiree’s donation. This can potentially double or triple the amount you give.
Living Trusts and bequests – Pledge a will bequest or name The Venice Symphony as a beneficiary of a retirement or life insurance plan. *
Monthly Giving option – An easy and affordable way to offer support! Simply select monthly recurring payments when giving online or when visiting or calling our administrative offices.
Play it Forward - Donate an instrument and help make a difference for a young musician in our community.
Small business and Corporate Engagement – Strengthen your community by offering support through concert sponsorships, participating in special events, advertising or other unique opportunities. Let’s curate a doable option for your business!
Stock and Securities – Gifts of appreciated stocks are welcomed and may be advantageous to the donor from a tax point of view. *
For more information on any of these opportunities, speak with a Development Team member by calling 941-207-8822 or visit our Administrative Offices.
*Because each situation is different, please consult your tax advisor about tax benefits.
