While we are always looking ahead, this weekend I hope our TV Classics! concert takes you back to moments in time. Whether it’s gathering around the couch with the family for the weeknight sitcom, counting down the final seconds to the nailbiting winning game, or watching the world’s greatest detective solve the next mystery, television has a way of taking us on a unique journey throughout the years. The music you’ll hear today will be nostalgic, exciting, and as always entertaining thanks to Music Director Troy Quinn and our Symphony musicians. TROY TROYQUINN, QUINN,MUSIC MUSICDIRECTOR DIRECTOR Emmy-nominated conductor Troy Quinn has quickly established himself as one of his generation’s most versatile young artists. Lauded for his energetic and riveting conducting, charismatic stage presence, and genre-defying programs, Quinn is in his eighth season as Music Director of the Venice Symphony in Florida. He is also in his ninth season as Music Director of the Owensboro Symphony in Kentucky and serves concurrently as the Pops Conductor of both the Rhode Island Philharmonic and the Santa Rosa Symphony in California. Quinn’s engagements have included performances with many prestigious orchestras in the United States, including the Boston Pops, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. Equally at home in the pops and commercial world, Quinn has performed and recorded with some of the most popular artists of our time, including The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Barry Manilow, Lee Greenwood, Josh Groban, Jennifer Hudson, Michael Feinstein, Tower of Power, Rockapella, Cypress Hill, The Indigo Girls, and Nas. As an accomplished vocalist, Quinn has also collaborated with such renowned composers as Alan Menken, Hans Zimmer, Alan Silvestri, and Alexandre Desplat while performing under prominent maestros, including Helmuth Rilling, Carl St. Clair, and Dan Saunders of the Metropolitan Opera. In addition to his concert work, Quinn has worked extensively in the television and recording industry, earning an Emmy nomination for the PBS special A Night at the Oscars with the Owensboro Symphony. He has made appearances on such hit television shows as Fox’s GLEE, NBC’s The Voice, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno while recording on films like The Call of the Wild and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. He has also appeared at many of the world’s major music centers and at such famed venues as the Hollywood Bowl, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and Tanglewood. A native of Connecticut, Quinn pursued a bachelor of arts degree from Providence College where he was the recipient of the Leo S. Cannon award for superior achievement in the music field. He went on to earn his master’s degree with honors from the Manhattan School of Music, studying conducting with David Gilbert and voice with highly acclaimed Metropolitan Opera singer Mark Oswald. He completed his doctorate in conducting at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, where he studied with Larry Livingston and Jo-Michael Scheibe and was named the outstanding doctoral graduate of his class. Quinn has participated in numerous masterclasses as a conducting fellow, attending conducting institutes at the Royal Academy of Music, Eastman School of Music, and Bard Conservatory of Music. He has been mentored by such renowned conductors as Benjamin Zander, Neil Varon, and Leon Botstein. PATRON ON PERCUSSION Drum Roll Please… Robby Cordes, MAS (Master Advertising Specialist), has been a resident of Venice for the past seven years, and alongside his partner, Ginger Mace, has been a dedicated Venice Symphony supporter, season ticket holder, musician host and Gala attendee. With over 43 years of experience as a business executive - 20 years with Philip Morris USA and 23 years in the advertising industry – Robby managed major national accounts throughout the country, and was the Director of the Promotional Products Division of Hospitality Mints. A graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s College – Conservatory of Music he combined his love for music with a focus on business and advertising; earning a BFA degree. Robby’s affinity for music stems from his passion as a young musician playing the piano, drums, guitar and vocals in various local bands. Since retiring, Robby remains active in our local community and participates in many outreach activities through the Rotary Club at Wellen Park, where he is a past board member. Robby is honored to join The Venice Symphony Board of Trustees and looks forward to contributing his experience and enthusiasm to the continued success of The Venice Symphony. CONCERT NOTES Light Cavalry Overture by Franz von Suppé (18191895) is from his operetta Light Cavalry which premiered in Vienna in 1866. Although the whole work is rarely performed or recorded, the overture is one of Suppé’s most popular compositions, and has achieved a quite distinct life of its own. Many orchestras around the world have the piece in their repertoire, and the main theme of the overture has been covered numerous times by musicians, cartoons and other media. In the 1942 Disney cartoon Symphony Hour, Maestro Mickey Mouse conducts the Light Cavalry Overture. As von Suppé himself spent a career writing music for light entertainment, perhaps he would have been thrilled to know that his music continues to entertain audiences around the world in various forms. When TV Was Young, arranged by Robert Wendel (1951-), is a musical trip back in time featuring iconic TV themes from Dragnet, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Honeymooners, The Lone Ranger, I Love Lucy, and the “N-B-C” signature. As composer, arranger, and publisher, he has supplied Pops music to the top 400 orchestras in America, Europe, Canada, Southeast Asia, and Australia, and his work has been featured on NBC’s Today program, and in commercials for QVC and Wal-Mart. Originally from Bridgeport, CT, he now makes his home in New York City. In his spare time he is a tornado chaser, an amateur astronomer, a telescope maker, and a pyrotechnics afficionado. Roundball Rock (NBA on NBC Theme) was first developed by John Tesh (1952-) in July 1989 in a hotel room in France while he was covering the Tour de France for CBS. NBC had recently acquired the NBA broadcasting rights from CBS and let Tesh know it was looking for theme music. While asleep, Tesh came up with the theme and instantly woke up to record it. Without any of his instruments or a tape recorder nearby, Tesh called his answering machine at home and sang a preliminary version of the melody so he would not forget it. When he returned from France, he began recording in his studio in Los Angeles. Tesh submitted a VHS tape to NBC consisting of fast break highlights soundtracked with his theme. The tape was submitted under a pseudonym because, although he was already known as a TV host and sportscaster, he knew that the perception was that “the guy who reads the celebrity 10 • 2025-2026 Season • Tickets: 941-207-8822
CONCERT NOTES birthdays on Entertainment Tonight isn’t going to be writing sports themes”. Originally titled Roundball Rock as a placeholder, the theme was ultimately chosen from six submissions, and the name stuck. The Mission (NBC News Theme) is an orchestral suite composed by John Williams (1932-) in 1985 as a television news music package for NBC News. It consists of four movements: The Mission, used for NBC Nightly News, Fugue for Changing Times, used for Before Hours during 1987-1988, Scherzo for Today, used for Today until 1990, and The Pulse of Events, used by Meet the Press and special breaking news reports. Well known for his movie work, Williams was engaged by NBC to compose themes in contrast to the synthesized music common for news programs at the time. Williams stated he wanted to convey the concepts of nobility of purpose, consistency and dignity. The original recordings were made with an 80-piece orchestra. Morning, Noon, and Night Overture by Franz von Suppé is from Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna, a humorous play featuring local color and various acrobatics, interspersed with song. Suppé was only 24 when he composed the overture, but he certainly knew how to get the attention of the audience. First performed on February 16, 1844 and, although the play closed after three nights, the overture became an immense success. In 1933 Fleischer Studios featured the overture in an animated short film featuring well-known cartoon character Betty Boop, as the owner of a bird sanctuary farm threatened by Tom Kat’s Social Club, a gang of hungry cats looking for an easy meal. A sickly rooster turns into a fighter (boxing gloves and all!) who pummels the cats, becoming the hero and saving the farm and all the birds. Morning, Noon and Night Overture was also featured in a 1959 Warner Bros. Looney Tunes cartoon featuring Bugs Bunny as a maestro who is constantly distracted, first by the audience and later by a pesky fly. The orchestra in turn takes his reactions as musical directions with predictably tumultuous results.
