PATRON ON PERCUSSION

Drum roll Please…

We are delighted to welcome Diann Michnowicz to the stage as our Patron on Percussion for the Friday, March 20 Fountains, Tides and Tempests concert.

“What do you give your best friend for her birthday when she says she doesn’t want a gift, just experiences?”, writes friend Maureen Snyder. “Playing The Star Spangled Banner with The Venice Symphony seemed like the ULTIMATE experience!”

Diann grew up as an “Army Brat” while her father served in the Army. After graduating from Florida State University with a Masters in social work she entered the police academy. Now retired, she served as a loyal and patriotic Miami-Dade Police Officer for thirty years.

Currently, Diann resides in Hollywood, FL with her son Michael while spending much of her time here in Venice with her friends that “gave her the drumsticks!”

Treat yourself—or a loved one or friend—to a memorable experience! Every season The Venice Symphony offers two opportunities for our patrons to take the stage and share the spotlight with our talented musicians.

Become a Patron on Percussion and join The Symphony as a guest bass drum soloist, performing The Star Spangled Banner at one of our concerts throughout the season at The Venice Performing Arts Center. Instruction is included.

If your dream is to lead The Symphony, you can become a Guest Conductor on a spirited rendition of Sleigh Ride at one of our popular holiday concerts. No experience is necessary and includes a conducting rehearsal with Maestro Quinn himself.

CONCERT NOTES

Main Title from The Sea Hawk

Erich Korngold (May 29, 1897 - November 29, 1957) was an Austrian composer and conductor who left Europe in the mid-1930s and later became a US citizen. A child prodigy, he became one of the most important and influential composers in Hollywood history. He was a noted pianist and composer of classical music, as well as music for Hollywood films, becoming the first composer of international stature to write Hollywood scores. The Sea Hawk is a 1940 American adventure film from Warner Bros. Pictures starring Errol Flynn as an English privateer who defends his nation’s interests on the eve of the launch of the Spanish Armada. Korngold’s rousing musical score is recognized as a high point in his career.

The Sea Hawk was both an adventure film and a period piece about Elizabethan England’s struggles with Spain, but it was also meant as a pro-British propaganda film to build morale during World War II and to influence the American public into having a more pro-British outlook.

What the Tide Could Bring from Cast Away

Alan Silvestri (born March 26, 1950) is an American composer, conductor, orchestrator and music producer of film scores. He has received two Grammy Awards and two Primetime Emmy Awards as well as nominations for two Academy Awards and two Golden Globes. In addition to Cast Away (2000) his scores include the Back to the Future film series (1985–1990), and five Marvel Cinematic Universe films from Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), to the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday (2026). Silvestri has also composed music for television series, including

CONCERT NOTES

CHiPs (1978 to 1983) and the award-winning music for the science documentary series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey.

Silvestri moved to Los Angeles in 1970. “I came to Hollywood in 1970 broke.... I didn’t even have any goals or plans. I didn’t even go to movies. And I knew nothing about composers or composing,” he said. In 1972, while he was working intermittently as a session guitarist, the producer of a low-budget action film asked him to write the score. Silvestri agreed, despite a lack of experience: “I went out and bought a how-to-compose book.... At one point, I was using beer cans for percussion.“

Leaving Home from Avatar: The Way of Water

Simon Franglen (born May 26, 1963) is an English composer of classical and film music, as well as a record producer and musician. His film work includes a number of well-known movies, including Avatar (2009), for which he received Golden Globe and Grammy nominations for the theme song, and for being the producer of My Heart Will Go On from Titanic, for which he won a Record of The Year Grammy Award. Other film credits include Seven, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Magnificent Seven, and arranging music for the James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre. With an estimated budget of $350–460 million, Avatar: The Way of Water, which premiered in London on December 6, 2022, is one of the most expensive films ever made. It was a major box office success, breaking multiple records. It grossed $2.32 billion in its first theatrical run, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2022 and the third-highest-grossing film of all time. On June 25, 2024, Franglen was invited into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his work on Avatar: The Way of Water.

As a top Los Angeles session musician and programmer, Franglen was involved in a huge number of hit singles and albums since the early 1990s including Un-Break My Heart by Toni Braxton, Change The World by Eric Clapton, and I Have Nothing by Whitney Houston. Franglen also accompanied Barbra Streisand for her first live performance in 27 years at the Inauguration of President Bill Clinton on January 20, 1993, then toured with her for the subsequent comeback tour.

CONCERT NOTES

Victory at Sea

Richard Rodgers (June 28, 1902 - December 30, 1979) was an American composer who worked primarily in musical theater. With 43 Broadway musicals and over 900 songs to his credit, (in partnerships with Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II), Rodgers was one of the best-known American composers of the 20th century, and his work significantly influenced popular music. Rodgers composed 12 themes that arranger Robert Russell Bennett used in the orchestra score for NBC’s 26-episode World War II television documentary Victory at Sea (1952–53). This production pioneered the “compilation documentary”— programming based on preexisting footage —and was broadcast in dozens of countries.

Richard Rodgers was the first person to win all four of the top American entertainment awards in theater, film, recording, and television—an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony—now known collectively as an EGOT. He also won a Pulitzer Prize, making him the first person to receive all five awards. In 1978, Rodgers was among the inaugural group of Kennedy Center Honorees for lifetime achievement in the arts.

The Hebrides (Fingal’s Cave)

Felix Mendelssohn (February 3, 1809 - November 4, 1847), was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. His compositions include symphonies, concertos, piano music, organ music and chamber music. His bestknown works include the Overture for A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1826 at age 17), adding his Wedding March in 1843, and the melody used in the Christmas carol Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. The Hebrides is a concert overture that was composed by Felix Mendelssohn in 1830, revised in 1832, and published the next year. It was inspired by one of his trips to the British Isles, specifically an 1829 excursion to the Scottish island of Staffa, with its basalt sea cave known as Fingal’s Cave. It was reported that the composer immediately jotted down the opening theme for his composition after seeing the island.

As an indication of the esteem in which it is held by musicians, Johannes Brahms once said, “I would gladly give all I have written, to have composed something like the Hebrides Overture”.

CONCERT NOTES

Pirates of the Caribbean

Klaus Badelt (born June 12, 1967) is a German composer, producer, and arranger of film scores, best known for his work on the Hollywood blockbuster film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the first of the highly succesful film franchise. Other film scores followed including Equilibrium, Catwoman, K-19: The Widowmaker, Basic, and TMNT. Also known for his collaborations with Hans Zimmer, Badelt helped write scores for dozens of critically acclaimed films including The Thin Red Line, The Prince of Egypt, and Gladiator.

Fountains of Rome

Ottorino Respighi (July 9, 1879 - April 18, 1936) was an Italian composer, violinist, teacher, and musicologist and one of the leading composers of the early 20th century. His compositions include operas, ballets, orchestral suites, choral songs, chamber music, and transcriptions of Italian compositions of the 16th-18th centuries. Respighi’s best known and most performed works are his three orchestral tone poems which brought him international fame: Fountains of Rome (1916), Pines of Rome (1924), and Roman Festivals (1928).

In 1918, conductor Arturo Toscanini asked Respighi to select a composition to be performed in a series of 12 concerts in Milan. He reluctantly picked Fountains of Rome, which at the time had only been performed at its 1917 premiere. The concerts were a huge success placing Respighi as one of the leading Italian composers of the early 20th century. A resulting publishing agreement granted him 40% of the rental and performance rights.

SUPPORT THE SYMPHONY

Your personal investment is the reason The Venice Symphony delivers exceptional concerts and affordable music education. Together, musical excellence is sustained and lives transformed.

Annual Fund – The Venice Symphony’s primary source of operating revenue and outreach. Contributions may be given monthly, quarterly or annually.

Donor Advised Funds and iRA Distributions – A contribution from an IRA or DAF is an excellent way to achieve your charitable giving objectives. *

employee Match – Many corporations will match their current employee’s or retiree’s donation. This can potentially double or triple the amount you give.

Living Trusts and bequests – Pledge a will bequest or name The Venice Symphony as a beneficiary of a retirement or life insurance plan. *

Monthly Giving Option – An easy and affordable way to offer support! Simply select monthly recurring payments when giving online or when visiting or calling our administrative offices.

Play it Forward - Donate an instrument and help make a difference for a young musician in our community.

Small business and Corporate engagement – Strengthen your community by offering support through concert sponsorships, participating in special events, advertising or other unique opportunities. Let’s curate a doable option for your business!

Stock and Securities – Gifts of appreciated stocks are welcomed and may be advantageous to the donor from a tax point of view. *

For more information on any of these opportunities, speak with a Development Team member by calling 941-207-8822 or visit our Administrative Offices.

*Because each situation is different, please consult your tax advisor about tax benefits.
