IN REVIEW: Recent News, Happenings, and Events

The Grand Opening of the new L’Arche Homefires building at 341 Main Street, Wolfville took place on September 15. Over 500 visited the building for the drop-in event and tours of the new space. "We were very happy to welcome so many old friends and new friends. It was great to see people who had mobility challenges easily access the space. It was also wonderful to hear members of the Anglican community reminisce about the space as where they taught Sunday School or where their families enjoyed community suppers" says director Ingrid Blais, "A highlight was certainly all the people who participated in tours around the building and welcoming so many people who have supported the Building Our Dream campaign. We look forward to welcoming more people into our beautiful new store."

Jenny Osburn’s The Kitchen Party Cookbook has officially launched! According to our sources the launch party at the Noodle Guy restaurant in Port Williams on September 17 was a giant success. The crowd sampled the fare from the new cookbook, Laura McDonald and Jenny Osburn were on hand, Hilary Drummond was helping out selling books, and live music was enjoyed by all.

The TapRoots Fibre Lab has taken the next step in bringing back locally-produced linen goods to the Annapolis Valley. While TapRoots Farms looks after the CSA for grocery items, TapRoot Fibre Lab is now offering a CSL (Community Shared Linen). The program is an opportunity for shareholders to support small scale textile industry from seed, to fibre through to the final piece. “Designer Abi has joined our team along with the great group of people who are working towards growing clothes on the farm which starts at the planting of the crop and the processing on the farm by all of the team at Taproot,” says Patricia Bishop in a recent Facebook video introducing the CSL. Sign-up for the program

is now on until October 20. Shareholders will receive products over the course of 2018. The garments are custom made to each individual shareholders measurements with responsive product support.

The Kings County Museum has a stellar lineup events happening this fall. With everything from an examination of a local “haunting," to the history of Professional Wrestling in the Annapolis Valley, the Kings Historical Society is taking a creative spin on making local history interesting and entertaining.

On September 17, Aube Giroux’s film Modified had its world premier at the FIN Atlantic International Film Festival in Halifax. Modified is a first-person, feature-length documentary that questions why genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are not labeled on food products in Canada and the United States, despite being labeled in 64 other countries around the world.

Originally from the Annapolis Valley, Aube shot the film over a span of ten years. The film is a moving personal journey that debunks the myth that GMOs are needed to feed the world, making a strong case for a more just, transparent, and sustainable food system.

The Kings County Museum is located at 37 Cornwallis Street in the old courthouse which was originally built in 1903 and served as the King County’s seat of justice for more than 75 years. In 1980, the Kings Historical Society purchased the building and it has been operated as a museum ever since. The Society currently counts approximately 150 people as members. Curator Bria Stokesbury has been with the museum for 30 years and manager Kate MacInnes Adams has been there for four.

It was all about Creative Contraptions at the Woflville Library on September 30. Local "Pretendgineer" and Maker Ian McKay led the crowd of mad scientists, super heroes and inventors between the ages of 8 and 15 through an afternoon of creative engineering. Using cardboard, LEDs, and motors they assembled heroic gear such as wearable robot arms, magical tiaras and helms of power.

The Kentville Library is finally moving to the new space in the upper level of 440 Main Street! The library will be closed between October 16 and October 18, reopening in the new space on Thursday October 19. "The Kentville staff and the AVRL board are really looking forward to the completion of this project and offering library service from a permanent location. We've seen the shelving in place, and it is starting to look more like a library!" says Angela Reynolds, Community Engagement Coordinator for the Annapolis Valley Regional Library. The new space will feature a lively children’s area, a great space for teens, seating, study space, and a beautiful program room. Along with the move, the library will also now have extended hours on Tuesday mornings. A Grand Opening is planned for November 25 and the Friends of the Library are working on some fun events for that day.

The Grapevine asked Kate and Bria a bit about how these events come together.

The Grapevine (GV): How do you come up with the event ideas?

Are they drawn from the museum pieces or from interest in the community?

Kate: Programming is an important part of our relationship with our community. It allows us the opportunity to enhance exhibit info and encourage folks to visit our museum.

Event ideas come from matching ideas with current exhibits, community interest and seasonal historical events. Often there are folks in our community who are doing pretty amazing things and we want to share that! “Experience based” events have become a large part of programming in museums as we attempt to lose the stereotypical idea of museums being boring and predictable. During the past year we have hosted a concert our 1940s dance, a panel discussion on pagan practices in Nova Scotia a talk on prehistoric sites in the Orkney Isles and the travelling Museum of New Ideas.

A pretty eclectic mix. We always start and end our season (May- Dec) with a membership celebration (A picnic and Christmas party).

GV: Are the recurring, or do you come up with new ones each year?

Kate: Our fall programming always includes a talk on some aspect of the supernatural world and for the past four years we have worked with CentreStage Theatre on a “war time” event.

Bria: New programs are introduced as opportunities present themselves, or to coincide with historical events such as the centennial of Vimy Ridge. Our November guest speaker travelled to Europe to photograph WWII battlefields this past summer.

GV: What sort of planning is involved?

Kate: The planning process varies depending on the event. The Soldiers Social (1940’s dance) requires months of prep and 70 volunteers.

Bria: Collaboration with other historical groups is very important to us and we were very pleased to work with the Kings Hants Heritage Connection and the New Minas Rotary Club on the “Family Fun Day” at the Prescott House Museum on July 28th.

GV: Do you already have any plans in place for the spring?

Bria: The museum is seasonal and reopens to the public in April each year. Our programming starts with our monthly membership meeting on the last Tuesday of each month.

These meetings offer a wide variety of guest speakers on topics of social and natural history. Our upcoming exhibit and programming for next summer isn’t firmed up yet but we hope to do something on vintage weddings and African Nova Scotian History.

Upcoming events at The Kings County Museum October 17, 7pm: Haunted Houses 101 An examination of paranormal activity and investigations. Join us (if you dare) for a public lecture on haunted houses and an overview of the investigations of this phenomenon.

A local "haunting" will be examined in detail through the experiences of Randall House Museum curator Krystal Tanner. Who's that rapping at my door?!

October 24, 7:30pm: Heels & Baby Faces, A History of Professional Wrestling in Kings County Featuring guest speakers guest speakers Kirk Staratt and Maynard Stevens.

October 27, 8pm: Soldiers Social Hosted by the Kings Historical Society and CentreStage Theatre. Guests will enjoy a night of live 1940’s era music, food, theatre and dancing. The “Andrews Sisters” will make a special appearance! There will be a cash bar serving refreshments and “cigarette” girls will stroll the ballroom of the Cornwallis Inn. The Runner's Basket: So this is obviously not exactly how my basket looked when I got home from the Wolfville Farmer's Market on Saturday, September 30. While the sneakers are a bit staged, the beauty of the fresh produce is very real. The vegetables are from Longspell Point Farms, the apples are from the Gillespie Family Orchard, the flowers are from Seven Acre Farm (which is part of the Maritime Small Farm Co-op), and my daughter drank our apple cider from Suprima Farm before it could be photographed.

We may have taken countless classes in math, science, literature, and history, but have never had a single lesson from teachers whose area of expertise is the hard work required to create a healthy partnership. Now maybe you don’t believe in the existence of angels, and so you imagine his idea doesn’t apply to you. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Unless you have an off-road vehicle, you can’t drive directly from North America to South America. The Pan-American Highway stretches from Prudhoe Bay in Northern Canada to Ushuaia, Argentina — a distance of about 19,000 miles — except for a 100-mile patch of swampy rainforest in Panama. I’d like to call your attention to a comparable break in continuity that affects your own inner terrain, Cancerian — a grey area where two important areas of your life remain unlinked. The coming weeks will be a favorable time to close the gap.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Based in Korea, Samsung is a world leader in selling smartphones and other information technology. But it didn’t start out that way. In its original form, back in 1938, it primarily sold noodles and dried fish. By 1954, it had expanded into wool manufacturing.

More than three decades after its launch as a company, it further diversified, adding electronics to its repertoire. According to my reading of the astrological omens, the next ten months should be an excellent time for you to do the equivalent of branching out from noodles and dried fish to electronics. And the coming six weeks will be quite favorable for formulating your plans and planting your seeds.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): In my opinion, you’re not quite ready to launch full-tilt into the rebuilding phase. You still have a bit more work to do on tearing down the old stuff that’s in the way of where the new stuff will go. So I recommend that you put an “Under Construction” sign outside your door, preferably with flashing yellow lights.

This should provide you with protection from those who don’t understand the complexity of the process you’re engaged in.

To understand that odd term, keep in mind that “hagiography” is an account of the life of a saint, so adding “auto” means it’s the biography of a saint penned by the saint himself. I’m bringing up these fun facts in hope of encouraging you to ruminate at length on your life story. If you don’t have time to write a whole book, please take a few hours to remember in detail the gloriously twisty path you have trod from birth until now. According to my reading of the astrological omens, the best way to heal what needs to be healed is to steep yourself in a detailed meditation on the history of your mysterious destiny.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): If you go to the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Germany, you will see a jug of wine that was bottled in 1687.

In accordance with astrological omens, Sagittarius, I suggest that you find a metaphorical version of this vintage beverage — and then metaphorically drink it! In my opinion, it’s time for you to partake of a pleasure that has been patiently waiting for you to enjoy it. The moment is ripe for you to try an experience you’ve postponed, to call in favors that have been owed to you, to finally do fun things you’ve been saving for the right occasion.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): If a late-night TV talk show called and asked me to be a guest, I’d say no. If People magazine wanted to do a story on me, I’d decline. What good is fame like that?

It might briefly puff up my ego, but it wouldn’t enhance my ability to create useful oracles for you. The notoriety that would come my way might even distract me from doing what I love to do. So I prefer to remain an anonymous celebrity, as I am now, addressing your deep self with my deep self. Since he started in 1996, he has dispatched over 5,000 missives into the unknown, asking the strangers who might find them to write back to him. To his delight, he has received more than 3,000 responses from as far away as Russia, Scotland, and West Africa. I suspect that if you launch a comparable mission sometime soon, Aquarius, your success rate wouldn’t be quite that high, but still good. What long-range inquiries or invitations might you send out in the direction of the frontier?

MIKE UNCORKED: High Definition Landscaping Mike Butler Just a month has passed since I first met Dustin Rines and Charles Harvey, owners and operators of High Definition Landscaping, but we’ve become fast friends. I have to say, I’m pretty crazy about what they do for their day jobs, and I am very excited to share their story with you!

Before I became a full-time barista/local cafe entertainment mogul, I was a full-time lighting consultant with a special certificate in landscape lighting design, and it was one of the most rewarding and enjoyable aspects of the lighting world for me. Not everyone sees the lighting inside your house, but everyone can peek at the outside, so having the opportunity to learn about the varieties of plants and trees, structures, and water features in a landscape, and be able to light it up, was a wonderful job and I miss it. Through Charles, Dustin, and HD Landscaping, I am re-living that missing piece of my life.

Charles and Dustin are the best of friends and have been family, through marriage, for the last 15 years. Charles has worked at Tangled Garden for the last 8 years as one of the head gardeners and Dustin joined him there a while ago. I have been in awe of the beauty of the garden there for years and during my visits I shake my head at how much work, time, effort, and expertise goes into keeping the gardens looking so pristine. Now I know who is responsible.

Charles and Dustin officially started HD Landscaping in April 2016 as an extension of their work at the Tangled Garden. Motivated by the ever-changing landscapes of the valley, the science behind gardening, and the many ideas and dreams that clients have for their property, HD Landscaping has been thriving since conception, but Charles and Dustin always welcome more clients, bigger projects, and different angles to approach in their field.

WHO'S WHO: Three Cheers for Chris Cunningham!

Mike Butler Have you heard of the Integrity Cheer Empire or ICE, for short? Well, ICE is one of the coolest all-star cheerleading organizations around, and I feel so fortunate to tell you about one of ICE’s main cheerpersons, Chris Cunningham.

Chris Cunningham is originally from Halifax, NS, but has spent the last six years of his life working in Toronto as the program director for a large and well-known all-star cheerleading program called PCT or Power Cheer Toronto. “I had many positive experiences with this program, including being named the 2017 Junior ICU world champions." Chris says, "I have recently relocated to the Annapolis Valley with my partner and our four dogs, to help build up and run Integrity Cheer Empire or ICE All-Stars, located in Windsor, NS.” Chris began cheerleading when he was 14 and fell in love with the sport. “I loved operating in a team environment and loved being driven by my teammates, to achieve our common goals. I never really expected to become a full-time professional in my industry, frankly when I was younger it didn't seem like an option." says Chris, "I went to school for child studies and working with youth interested me, but then wham 13 years later, I am doing this full-time. I love the creativity that goes into designing a dynamic, high scoring routine.

I love the competitive nature of our sport, the goal setting, and motivating young athletes to work towards a goal. As far as being a coach goes, I love to experiment with my practice plans and I like to try new ways to keep my athletes engaged. I think what is most special in my line of work is being someone that younger athletes can look to and share a special bond with while teaching them life lessons through their sport. There are three very influential people in my life: my best friend, my mom, and

my first cheerleading coach, and without their guidance and support, I wouldn’t be here!”

Chris’s future is looking very routine, in the cheerleading sense, as he plans to train the Integrity Cheer Empire IOC5 team, made up of upper level athletes ranging in age, and to help them compete and earn a bid to the 2018 Cheerleading World Championships in Orlando. This team has never been awarded a bid, but I feel with Chris’s verve and passion, this goal is easily attainable.

SHALL WE DREAM: The Annapolis Valley Honour Choir Emily Leeson This season, the Annapolis Valley Honour Choir will use their voices to draw out the theme of ‘home': what it means to find a home, to be at home, and to support others in making a home. During the first concert of their season, “Shall We Dream,” set for October 21 and 22 at the Horton High School Performance Centre, the choir will sport T-shirts produced by recent Horton High grad Mollie Symons, aimed at raising funds for Doctors Without Borders.

The “Shall We Dream” concert will share the struggles of searching and wandering but also the joys of finding peace and building bridges, and will be full of emotional, heart-rending performances. Special guests will include recently settled immigrant families in the Annapolis Valley as well as a Syrian lute player, Hussam Al Assaf, who has just arrived in Nova Scotia.

Symons’ project has been a perfect fit for the theme of the evening. She and her partner in the project, Aspen Murray, are calling the clothing line Naji, which translates to ‘survivor’ in Arabic. As first year university students settling into their new lives, coordinating the project has been a challenge but they are bolstered by the passion they both share for humanitarian efforts.

Naji grew out of their passion for fashion and a desire to make a difference in the lives of refugees. Overwhelmed and saddened by the constant and brutal horror of the Syrian Civil War and the plight of asylum seekers, Symons and Murray were looking to add their compassion and commitment to the humanitarian effort devoted to that crisis.“By starting conversations, raising money and reinforcing systems of support, our vision for Naji is that it helps to build open-minded and big-hearted communities where people are inspired to make a difference in their own capacity.” says Symons.

So far Naji has sold 260 T-shirts. The t-shirts and other clothing items are available through their Facebook page (@NajiClothing). Ap-

proximately one quarter of the proceeds goes directly to Doctors Without Borders. The $20 T-shirts will be available at a booth at the upcoming AVHC concert.

Along with the first concert of the AVHC season, a unique workshop, “The Intersections of Choral Music and the Muslim World” coordinated by AVHC Artistic Director Heather Fraser, will be open to the public on October 22 from 10am-12pm at Acadia University’s Denton Hall. The workshop will be led by Arabic musical guests, Shireen Abu-Khader and Hussein Janmohamed, both PhD students from the University of Toronto School of Music. Janmohamed and Abu-Khader will share their research, expertise, and passion for using music as a narrative for cultural identity. Participants will explore the musical intersections among diverse peoples, and how choral music’s innate ability to bring people together can be a medium for mediating encounters with difference. The workshop will present and draw on Arabic Choral music from the Levant and new Canadian choral music emerging through a conversation with the Muslim world. Janmohamed and Abu-Khader will demonstrate approaches for getting to know the music through a spirit of openness, a willingness to discover the unknown, a quest for social justice, and an ethic of musical hospitality.

The old table was piled high with curried popcorn, donair nachos, pesto veggie pizza, one of my mom's enormous party platters, fried pepperoni and many friggin' delicious dips: artichoke, roasted carrot, seven layer, muhammara-hummus. The Annapolis Cider flowed freely and the music did too. It was a great big celebration of Nova Scotian food and music, just as I pictured.

Now that I've run a restaurant and written a second cookbook it seems so clear that this is what I'm supposed to be doing. But I didn't always know I was going to make a life of food.

I may have told you that my first real cooking job was at a bowling alley on Saltspring Island, British Columbia. I didn’t have a phone, a house, or any restaurant experience whatsoever, but I had a job. I’d wake up each morning in my tent, shower at the marina down the road, and head in. If I was late, my boss would call the woman who owned the land I was camping on, and she would holler at me from her house up the hill. Kings Lane Recreation was a combination bowling alley, pool hall, arcade, and restaurant beloved by Island locals.

The food was great. Turkeys were continuously roasted, halibut filleted by hand for fish and chips, dough for butter tarts rolled out and filled. And big pots of soup were made from scratch.

After working for the owner, Ruth, for a while, I progressed from counter girl to gravy-maker to full-time cook. Following recipes that had been used for years, I slowly gained confidence in soup-making and most other kitchen duties. I also learned a great deal about being a boss and business owner. Ruth was generous, kind, crazy, and bursting with love for her family and community. She could flirt like nobody’s business and always kept tubes of lipstick by the sink for applying when the rush of hardworking men and women would come in for lunch. I would think of her often when I ran the restaurant, especially when I chose the heel of the bread for my sandwich (it’d go to waste otherwise) or hired someone with no experience just because I liked them. That’s how Ruth would do it.

That was more than twenty years ago. Last fall we visited Saltspring and found that the old bowling alley had been torn down. It made me feel so strange, almost as if it had never existed at all. A few days later we visited wonderful Ruth, now retired from the kitchen, at her home in West Vancouver. We stayed the night and I strolled out alone into her beautiful backyard the next morning. There I found the old bowling alley sign, nearly hidden behind a palm tree.

Cream of Broccoli Soup This is my simple but delicious version of a bowling alley lunch favourite. Choose a lovely bunch of local broccoli for this comforting soup. That’s the secret to its success!

1 large bunch broccoli 3 C water 1 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 C butter 1 medium onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 C flour 2 C milk (I use whole milk) Optional: about 1/2 cup (or more) grated cheddar

Cut the broccoli from the main stem and peel the stem. Cut all the broccoli into 1/4'' pieces.

Put them in a pot along with the water or stock and the salt. Bring to a boil over high heat, then remove from the heat and set aside. Heat the butter in a large soup pot over medium heat and add the onions. Stir and cook for about ten minutes, until the onions are tender and golden, then add the garlic and the flour. Let cook for a minute, then whisk in the milk. Stir or whisk continuously as it thickens and begins to bubble. Add the broccoli and its cooking water and stir to combine. Let the soup simmer for at least a few minutes, adding the optional cheese and lots of black pepper. Enjoy in the company of good people.

DINNER OUT: Grand Opening of the Lightfoot and Wolfville Winery Scott Campbell Sunday, September 24, was the grand opening of the Lightfoot & Wolfville Winery and what a grand opening it was indeed. The sheer spectacle of Lightfoot & Wolfville is enough to impress even the most seasoned traveller – acres of beautiful vineyard, giant outdoor dining tent, massive (I’m talking like three-stories high) wood-fired pizza oven, shelves of award-winning wines and all in and around a hospitality centre that I humbly offer would rival any in the Niagara or Okanagan wine regions.

I arrived mid-day on Sunday to an expansive parking lot that was filled all but for the one lone space I found. This was clearly a popular destination. I entered into the breathtaking hospitality centre. You owe it to yourself, when you go to visit, to just stop for a second as you enter this building and take it all in.

The detail and creativity in the architecture are amazing. I continued on past the live music that greeted me and then made my way into the retail space where a long counter was full of eager patrons all waiting to taste the latest Lightfoot & Wolfville offering. I browsed the shelves for a while, chatted with some of the very friendly staff members, and then made my way to the rear of the building where the wood-fired pizzas are made.

As much as you are impressed when you first see the building, you will be doubly impressed when you see the gigantic wood-fired pizza

oven. This three-story structure is impressive in its sheer size as it silently looms over the vineyard and the restaurant patrons. And the pizzas--delicious melted mozzarella, fresh herbs, and a rich tomato sauce--you need to try to believe. A very organized system (order at the counter and have a seat on the patio or in the circus-sized tent) finds you enjoying your piping-hot pizza moments after placing your order.

But, still, there is more to see at Lightfoot and Wolfville. Make your way around the side of the building and on the lower level is an almost magical room. Imagine a long table. Now imagine it twice as long as you imagined it the first time. Now drape sheer curtains around the room and hang a few chandeliers, and you have a gathering room that, again, needs to be seen to be truly appreciated. During the grand opening, winemaker Josh Horton was offering tastings of the 2015 Lightfoot & Wolfville Bubbly Rosé.

THE DOME CHRONICLES: Thanks but No Thanksgiving Garry Leeson In 1972, a boxcar from Toronto containing a menagerie of farm animals and an eager young couple pulled into the station platform in Kingston, Nova Scotia. They were bound for a deserted hundred-acre farm on the South Mountain, determined to preserve the foundations of farmsteads past while constructing a geodesic dome. They were pioneers of the future, armed with respect for tradition and an irrepressible sense of humour. They didn’t call themselves farmers. They were back-to-the-landers. Farming was industry and their calling was sustainability. Over the next forty years, through flood and fire, triumph and catastrophe, they persevered, unwittingly sowing the seeds for the modern small-farm movement.

Following World War One, Thanksgiving was celebrated on November 11, the same day as Armistice Day. That made sense because by then the farmers who were responsible for the bounty of the land had harvested the better part of it and had time to relax, consume a little turkey, and chill out.

Of course eventually, as the city dwellers grew in numbers, that didn’t sit well with those who needed at least one more warm long weekend, the second weekend of October, to head to the cottage and on their way, gaze thankfully out their car windows at the farmers still slaving away trying to get their crops in.

When it was decided that Thanksgiving should be celebrated the same day as Armi-

stice Day, Canada was still a nation primarily of farmers. The tradition lasted until 1957 when the rural lobby lost its say and the second weekend in October and its consequent Monday became the official date of the celebration, a more convenient time to gather and give thanks for something that most hadn’t done much to deserve.

It’s interesting to note that the two-month summer school vacation that was proclaimed so everybody could help with the harvest was kept intact but now is of no practical use to the farmers who really need that help.

Wouldn’t it be neat if we established a tradition of people getting off their couches and deck chairs on the long Thanksgiving weekend and heading over to local farms to offer their

free services for a day or two, or maybe just the morning of Thanksgiving day itself?

There is still a lot to do around the farm at that time of year. Anybody who participates will, at the end of the day, while they sit nursing aching muscles and forking in their holiday meal with blistered hands, have a greater appreciation of what it takes to acquire the bounty everybody is celebrating.

I guess it’s time that we who live so well off the bounty of the land but do so little to deserve it give thanks, not just to some deity, but to the guy with “straw hat and old dirty hankies, moppin' a face like a shoe.” The farmers are an endangered species and we should honour and fight for them wherever possible.

A LAUGHING MATTER: Kentville Gets a Comedy Club

THE TRAVELLING TRUNK THEATRE TROUPE PRESENTS STORYBOOK THEATRE The Travelling Trunk Theatre Troupe will be at Wolfville’s Al Whittle Theatre on October 7 for a presentation of "Storybook Theatre" featuring the stories of Robert Munsch and many other great children's literature classics like the Adventures of Gerald and Piggy, The Gingerbread Man, Click, Clack, Moo and more.

The troupe, made up of local actors Linda-Levy Fisk, Candy O' Brien, Brian Smit, Sharon Churchill-Roe and Mike Butler, have performed at local schools and businesses, as well as Centrestage Theatre, and are excited to bring the show to Wolfville this fall. “There’s so much in these shows for the adults that sometimes they enjoy them more than the kids!” says troupe member Mike Butler.

There are three shows to choose from on Saturday, October 7: Pigs & Pals at 10am, Munsch & More at 11:30am, and Pigs & Pals again at 1:30pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at The Inquisitive Toy Company at 360 Main Street, Wolfville.

Genevieve Allen Hearn It started almost by mistake. Comedian Mike MacDonald was supposed to perform in Sydney, Cape Breton in April and had a last minute cancellation. Marc Sauvé contacted Paddy’s Pub in Kentville to see if Mike could perform there instead. The show sold out, and the K-Town Comedy Club was born.

Marc Sauvé, a stand up comedian himself, organizes the monthly comedy weekends at Paddy’s in Kentville. He said he fell in love with the Celtic Hall when Mike MacDonald did a show there. “It’s perfect for stand-up comedy. It has low ceilings and tight fixtures and there’s cabaret-style seating” says Sauvé.

After the original comedy night, Sauvé saw potential in making it a regular event. “The goal is so the valley can have a real comedy club experience: groups of people around

tables, food and alcohol being served, and intimate interaction”.

The first two comedy weekends have seen the 80-seat venue nearly full. Sauvé books comedians on a Friday and Saturday once a month, and is planning to add an amateur night on Thursday. Offering stand-up shows two weekends a month is a future possibility if crowds continue to grow.

Sauvé has been in the comedy business for almost twenty-five years, so finding talent comes easily to him. “Half my friends on Facebook are comedians,” he says. He selects both local comedians and talent from across the country. Ottawa’s Mike MacDonald has worked on a number of CBC comedy specials and will be returning to Kentville for a New

Year’s Eve show. In March, Kentville will be graced by James Mullinger’s presence, a British comedian who made Saint John his home in 2014 and has since been nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Live Solo Show and a Just For Laughs Best Comedy Show Award.

We are feeling the significance of having reached our 25th anniversary year this 2017.

It is hard to believe that we started with three vendors in the parking lot of the Robie Tufts in 1992. But we have been so honoured to have seen steady growth over the years thanks to so many passionate and inspiring people and organizations within a dedicated and positive community. There is a lot to be thankful for always, but we feel it a bit more deeply this year as we take the time to reflect.

This year the Wolfville Farmers’ Market will be continuing to improve our home; this fall with the installation of heat pumps and in the spring with a new metal roof on our south side and a 20kw photovoltaic array of solar panels. Nourishing Community Food Bucks Endowment:

For our 25th Anniversary, we have decided that one way to offer thanks to the community in which we thrive is to raise an endowment of $100,000 in support of our Nourishing Community Food Bucks Project. The Nourishing Community Food Bucks Project is an annual program where families who are vulnerable to food insecurity are given Market Money to participate in the Market during the harvest season. Participants gain access to fresh local food while also experiencing the connection that comes from knowing their farmer and being active participants in their community. We are working with the Rotary Club of Wolfville and the Wolfville Community Fund, as well as other community partners on this project. The Valley Harvest Marathon is coming up and we wanted to know more about running in the Valley!

We asked runner Cheri Killam a couple questions:

There are new ideas afoot about how to live in our valley. Two groups are holding meetings and inviting the public to discover new ways to interact with neighbours and live out what it means to be part of a community.

How long have you been running?

I started running in 2011 — right at the end of my first year of law school. I started all by myself with an app call Couch to 5k, which was apt because I'd always been a Couch Potato. I began in May that year with my first goal of making it to the 10k at the Valley Harvest Marathon. I did not want to work that hard for that long only to do a "fun" run (the 5k).

CO-HOUSING PUBLIC MEETING IN WINDSOR A group in the Windsor area has been meeting over the past year to discuss and learn about Co-housing. On Sunday, October 22 (1pm3pm) the group is hosting their first Co-Housing Public Meeting at the Cedar Centre in Windsor and inviting anyone interested to stop by, enjoy the local refreshments, and see and hear what Co-Housing could mean in the Annapolis Valley.

According to the Canadian Co-Housing Network, Co-housing is a concept that came to North America in 1988 from Denmark where it emerged in the 1960s. Residents usually own their own individual homes which are clustered around a common house with shared amenities.

According to Windsor group member Ann Knowles, the group is investigating what might work best for this area. “We are open to considering various types of developments and are not yet restricted to one particular location or style, as we all have various needs and dynamics in our lives, currently." says Knowles, “However, our common understanding is that the time is coming when the only tolerable option for us will be to live as a neighbourly community in smaller private homes, in close proximity to like minded individuals, with cooperation that allows us to share common land, talents, efforts, gardens, care giving, and child care, as well as the more practical things of life: occasional group meals, cars, laundry facilities, maintenance expenses, and garden/lawn equipment. In the meantime, we are studying, discussing, encouraging and constantly thinking of the best

way to set up our future with this in mind.”

The keynote speaker for the October 22 meeting will be joining the audience via Skype. Margaret Critchlow is the co-founding director of the Canadian Senior Co-housing Society and a founding member of successful Co-Housing community in Sooke, BC called Harbourside. Harbourside now has 31 fully occupied waterfront units with housing members ranging in age from 40 to 80.

Knowles is hoping that the meeting will offer curious individuals and family members the chance to learn about co-housing. There will be local refreshments on hand and Knowles is hoping that this initiative will spark the imaginations of those present towards a future where community means more than just the occasional wave or nod. “We want to see an alternative life style that will offer more by embracing old fashioned community living ideals and social contact via co-housing.” says Knowles. She’s excited by the interest she’s seeing already, “At the moment, there are 3-4 such Nova Scotian enclaves of co-housing in the early planning stages. These are striving to educate, deal with rezoning issues, design parameters that include sustainability and green spaces, and most particularly, sustain a village-like climate for either multi generational, or senior groups. It can’t happen soon enough from our perspective.”

COMMUNITY ROUND TABLES: Annapolis Valley HomeShare Program The Women's Place Resource Centre is holding a series of community round table events to discuss the Annapolis Valley HomeShare Program, an innovative housing initiative that they are hoping will take off in the region.

HomeShare programs match people who have an extra room in their home (Home Providers) with people who need an affordable place to live (Home Sharers). Home Sharers offer help in the home in exchange for low or nocost accommodation. HomeShare programs normally interview both Home Sharers and Home Providers to ensure good matches, support both parties in making their agreement, and offer follow-up.

“There is an urgent need for affordable housing in the Valley” says Tara Webb, a housing advocate for Women's Place Resource Centre in Annapolis Royal, “at the same time, many seniors have extra space in their home. Having a Home Sharer join them could increase their sense of social connection, make their lives a lot easier, and in some cases allow them to remain in their own homes.”

The HomeShare program can be a source of support, even for those already renting rooms online. A HomeShare Program might make it safer, and more likely that you find a match that works out for you in the long run.

“HomeShare programs generally screen and interview participants to create successful matches, support both parties in creating a mutually beneficial agreement, and then provide some follow-up” says Webb. “There are successful HomeShare programs all over

the world, including the UK, the US, and even here in Canada.”

Why did you take up running?

When I first started I was amazed at people who had been doing it for years. I could not imagine. I had never stuck with any type of physical activity in my life. But running made me feel better — physically and mentally — and it made law school a little bit easier.

It worked both to get stress out of my body but also it seemed to make it easier to think clearly. The experience at the Valley Harvest was surreal. I had been running alone, thinking I was doing something kind of weird and unusual, but suddenly there were hundreds of runners around me. It was amazing. The next spring I decided to join a "Learn to Run" group with Helen MacDonald and, since then, I've never enjoyed running alone again. Running has become my outlet and my entire social life. The running community is incredibly supportive and welcoming. Now it seems like almost everyone I know runs.

Most tend to think of running as a solitary activity — what do you appreciate about running with people?

Although running is hard work, we always find time to talk while we're running. We solve the world's problems, we sort out our lives and our personal problems, and we discuss tips and tricks for making running more fun, or at least more bearable. My theory has always been that running is the opposite of junk food: junk food tastes great for a few minutes, but fills you with regret (including the physical effects) for a long time. Running, on the other hand, is grueling work for a (relatively) short time, but you reap the benefits for a long time: physically, emotionally, and in your physique.

Do you have a favourite time of day, or place that you like to run?

We often run in Kentville, but I'm also a proud member of the Port Pacers — a run group for everyone — that meets in Port Williams every Tuesday (at 6:30pm) and every Saturday (at 8:30am). My favourite time of day is pretty much anything but the morning which is why I've been a loyal member of the Port Pacers but I've yet to join them on the Saturday morning runs.

What do you appreciate about events like the Valley Harvest Marathon?

This will be my 6th year in a row participating in the VHM. I consider us incredibly lucky to have such an amazing run right here in the Valley. It's so well-organized and so respected.

As a race it's not considered an easy one (lots of hills) nor is it considered in the hard range.

It's beautifully scenic and so well-supported by the people who live along the route and in the surrounding communities. It's where I ran my first 10k race and my first half-marathon.

Last year I'd hoped for it to be my first marathon, but I had to drop back to the half. This year I'll be lucky to finish 5k (I'm registered for the 10k) but I could not miss the 25th race!

How are you preparing for the event this year?

Usually I follow a carefully planned schedule where I run 3-4 times per week with a combination of longer and shorter distances, gradually building up. I know many people who follow very strict regimes of special training techniques and careful diet, but I find I lose my enjoyment if I work too hard at the training stage. For me, achieving lots of small goals (making it up that hill, finishing that next distance) with my eye on the big goal (the race) is how I keep motivated. The night before a race is the time to enjoy as much (reasonably) healthy food I want but absolutely no alcohol.

The morning of requires almost superstitious adherence to "what worked before." You run with your stomach and your guts and you do not need any novelty on race day.

What is it like running with such a crowd?

Running with a crowd is invigorating and intimidating. So many people are so excited and so ready to go, it's hard not to catch the enthusiasm.

If you knew of someone interested in starting to run, perhaps with a goal of participating in the Valley Harvest Marathon events next year, what advice would you pass along to them?

I would recommend starting slowly and join a group. There are lots of groups out there who are eager to help new runners. The Mountain View Runners are a great group filled with enthusiastic supporters. For me, I needed to see I could do it myself before I was brave enough to join, but then I could not imagine running alone. And hey, there are not many opportunities in life, once you're a grown-up, to get actual awards. If for no other reason, run so you can get that medal!

THE 25TH VALLEY HARVEST MARATHON

On Thanksgiving Weekend the Wolfville area welcomes several thousand runners for the Valley Harvest Marathon (VHM). The event is certainly a draw for many runners, eager for the event along with all the harvest-time activities on the go in the surrounding area.

In addition to the Ultra Marathon, Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10km, and 5km races, a popular free Kids Run is offered for children up to age 14.

Each year the VHM supports various organizations in return for their volunteer time dedicated to putting on the event. Last year, those organizations included the Shriners, the Evangeline Middle School Breakfast Program, the Central Kings Bank, the Canadian Ski Patrol, the Kingsport Wellness and Fitness Society, the Wolfville Mudcreek Rotary, and the Acadia SMILE Program.

Melanie Priesnitz, Conservation Horticulturist If you’ve read my column, taken one of my courses, or walked through the woods with me, you will know that I spend a lot of time talking about why the Acadian Forest Region is such a precious place and how important it is that we work together to preserve it.

For one night on Monday October 23 I get to sit back and listen to someone else share their passion and knowledge of our amazing, unique, and at-risk forest.

To kick off Acadia’s Sustainability Week we are bringing Gary Schneider here from Prince Edward Island to share his knowledge of forest restoration. Join us for a free public talk, “Restoring the Acadian Forest: Engaging community to increase biodiversity,” on Monday October 23, 7:30pm-9pm in the auditorium at the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre. We are in for a real treat as Gary is an engaging and passionate speaker, and his love of nature is infectious. You will leave with a greater understanding of why it’s so important to cherish and preserve our forests and hear about new ideas for engaging communities in conservation work.

Gary co-chairs the Environmental Coalition of Prince Edward Island and started the Macphail Woods Ecological Forestry Project in 1991. The project demonstrates ecologically sound forest management and restoration, centred around environmental education, conservation of rare plants, and bringing back the native Acadian forest. Gary and his team do phenomenal environmental education and outreach work and are very active in forest restoration on the Macphail woods property and across PEI. Macphail Woods manages 2,000 acres of public forest land for the provincial government and has received numerous awards in recognition of their work in forest restoration and rehabilitation. Gary is a member of the federal Multi-Interest Advisory Committee helping to rebuild Canada’s

It begins Friday, October 6 at Acadia University Art Gallery with the opening reception of his two-month solo exhibition “Emptying Landscapes – An Altered Place.” The extra large 4’x4’ pieces are all mixed media on rust prints and emphasize concerns for rural viability facing dual threats of depopulation, and powerful climatic reactions. The first artist talk is scheduled for Wednesday October 25.

The exhibition-related workshop on November 4 will teach techniques of mixed media on rust prints. A general introduction to woodblock, collagraph, and mono printing will take place November 18-19.

Hainstock will again team up with Sally Warren to present an exhibition of extreme opposites at Lunenburg’s Peer Gallery, October 14-24. The opening reception will be held Saturday October 14. The show, “Stand Back, Come Closer,” is the third collaboration by the two Nova Scotia artists who work in opposite sizes and scale.

Hainstock is solo in his Annapolis Royal exhibition of recent work at the Sissiboo Coffee & Art venue. It is now open and continues until the end of November. Then it’s the opening at Tiechert Gallery and the annual group show as part of Nocturne celebration, then back

in Annapolis Royal on October 15, for the opening of the Elephant Grass print co-op’s annual exhibition and fund raiser at ArtsPlace Gallery.

Finally, he'll be back at the North Mountain studio and gallery he shares with his wife Judy, a potter and clay artist, preparing for their annual open house and sale, November 25-26.
