Bloom - A Special Invitation for You Join us on Tuesday, May 7th from 11am to 1pm at Wolfville’s Acadia Festival Theatre for a celebration of Bloom; Wolfville’s new identity!

The celebration is comprised of two key components:

“Bloom” is Wolfville’s first pan-town identity. Every person and everything in Wolfville seems to have or portray the same attitude about Wolfville: the best time to be in Wolfville is not yesterday and not tomorrow, but today. There is an overwhelming sense from those in Wolfville, from college freshmen to “lifers” that the town has matured perfectly and is ready to be enjoyed by all.

12:noon to 12:30pm - A thirty minute stage performance, produced by Jeremy Webb, designed to tell the Wolfville brand story featuring the faces, voices, talent and creativity of Wolfville.

The Literacy Mile The Valley Community Learning Association’s annual fundraising event, the Literacy Mile, is Saturday, May 11th, 1-3pm at 49 Cornwallis St., Kentville.

The VCLA is a non-profit organization that helps adults to achieve their personal learning goals. For a small organization, the VCLA is having a major impact on the lives and futures of many Annapolis Valley residents. In the last year, over 350 learners participated in VCLA's diverse programs. Some studied for their GED so they can find work, some improved literacy skills so they can keep their job, some wanted to read to their children, or study the Drivers Handbook to be able to get their driver's license, or just be able to read their own mail.

The Literacy Mile event is an opportunity to raise awareness of and support for the literacy needs of Valley residents, celebrate the accomplishments of learners and recognize the community support, financial and in-kind, received throughout the year. There will be hot dogs and refreshments for sale, live music, a silent auction, a bake sale and activities for the whole family. rowing up in the Annapolis Valley I have had my share of fun! People who are new to the area (and some who are not) often ask me what they can do with their families in the Valley. I would rhyme off a few ideas, usually with the response, "How do you know??" I just like collecting information!

My background is in public relations and event planning. I have done a lot of fundraising and grant writing to help build the playgrounds in both Port Williams and the new KCA school in Kentville. As the CBC Information Morning Community Contact for Kentville it is my job to keep an eye on the news for Kentville and to find out what is going on. I am a writer- for the Acadia Alumni Bulletin, and this past fall I researched and wrote the Kentville ghost walks. Primarily though, I am also a stay-at-home mom (who doesn't stay at home!) for Daniel (6) and Thomas (4). All of these roles

This made me realize that there isn't one central place to look for information and activities related to families living in the Annapolis Valley. There are so many awesome things to see and do all across this beautiful Valley that I thought I would share the things I've discovered with you, so you can enjoy them too!

With thanks to my sister, Sharon, who created the Valley Family Fun website and my brother-in-law Steve for the logo, we were able to launch it a year ago, in January.

VITIS Mobile Winery Services VITIS Mobile Winery Services is a small business that was started Fall 2012 in the Valley by recent Acadia graduate Thomas Grégoire. Funded by a provincial Productivity and Innovation voucher, Thomas and his friends are looking into ways to help maintain the current boom that's occurring in our wine industry, to solidify our international status as an emerging major wine region. Two main areas of ongoing research involve: the feasibility of constructing and operating a mobile wine bottling unit through collaboration with ACSBE; and an experimental grape cultivar trial using more natural, organic alternatives for soil amendments, conducted here in the K.C. Irving Center. The VITIS team will be at the Irving Centre Native Plant Sale (Saturday, 9am-12noon in the Gardens), discussing their projects and selling organically grown grape vines and culinary herbs. Creamy Carrot Soup with Lemongrass & Fiddleheads - Dan Collins, Chef @ Art Can Cafe, Canning Spring is finally cooperating with the early season harvest that nature is kind enough to provide. Although most of these are ephemeral and last a very short time, it is a sure sign of the beginning of the bounty of local product which we are blessed with.

One of these celebrated items is the fiddlehead fern which is mostly gathered wild from forest floors, setting it apart from easy to cultivate and harvest garden offerings. In this recipe, fiddleheads serve mainly as the garnish on this wonderful soup, offering a lovely contrast in colour and texture, but more can be added to the soup if desired.

With warmer weather upon us, this soup is delicious chilled, but can also be heated for a chilly or damp day. Fiddleheads are best when soaked in salted water, then steamed until completely tender, about 12 to 15 minutes.

3 medium carrots, peeled and chopped 1 inch long 2 inch piece of lemongrass, minced finely 3 1/2 cups fresh carrot juice 1 tsp butter 1 tsp honey pinch curry powder 1/2 cup heavy cream salt fresh ground white pepper 1/2 cup steamed fiddleheads kalonji seeds (available at East Indian grocery on Robie St, Hfx.) mousse 1/4 cup creme fraiche sprig of tarragon, minced

Combine carrots, lemongrass, 2 cups carrot juice, butter, honey and curry.

Simmer over medium heat, then reduce to low simmer until the liquid is mostly gone and carrots are tender, about one hour.

Add cream, increase heat for 3 minutes, then puree with remaining 1 1/2 cups carrot juice in a blender, then pass through a strainer, season to taste, refridgerate.

Ladel soup into chilled bowls, top with mousse, a few fiddleheads, and a pinch of kalonji seeds. Enjoy the taste of spring!

Who's Who: Liana vanderhof-Rhodenizer: Picture Perfect!

W

hat a fun and random life I lead sometimes. I was walking down Central Avenue a few weeks ago and ran into a friend of mine who was taking part in a photo shoot. I pulled her right out of a shot so I could hug her and have a reunion of sorts… the photographer gave me a weird once over and I apologized and went on my merry way, thinking I would never have the chance to make it up to her for disrupting her shoot. Well, ladies and gentleman, that photographer was Liana vanderhof-Rhodenizer, and here’s me making it up to her.

Liana grew up in the beautiful Annapolis Valley; she’s married and has two adorable children (9 year old Kalana and 14 month old baby boy Hudson).

Liana works full time at Holland Home Leisure in New Minas, as manager of the Hot Tub and Patio Furniture Divisions. This has been her “day job” for the last eight years and she loves the work she does.

Suspended Coffees at Kate's Pantry Kate Adams and her customers are implementing the concept of suspended coffees at her Berwick fair trade coffee shop. Not a new idea, but one that is enjoying a resurgence, suspended coffees are purchased by customers for Kate to hold for someone who cannot afford a coffee that day. So I might buy my own yummy North Mountain java and add a suspended coffee to my bill for someone else later in the day. Kate often gives free coffees and this is a way for her customers to share in the generosity. Suspended coffees are just one of many ways that people in the Berwick area show that they care. Perhaps all of our coffee shops could implement this easy idea. ~ Mardi Burton
