The 2017 outdoor summer season Two Planks and a Passion Theatre production at Ross Creek features a world premiere of Nothing Less!, cowritten by novelist Ami McKay and Artistic Director Ken Schwartz as the Theatre Off The Grid MainStage production.

Nothing Less! follows Canadian women during the Great War as they knit their bit, bought Victory bonds, and kept the home fires burning. Yet they still didn’t have the vote. Set during the spring of 1918, the show is a moving tale of an intrepid band of small town suffragists (and the men who loved them).

Ami McKay is one of Canada’s best-known writers. Author of the critically acclaimed and bestselling novels The Birth House, The Virgin Cure, and The Witches of New York, this is her second collaboration with Two Planks and a Passion. Her play, Jerome: The Historical Spectacle premiered at Ross Creek in 2008.

Ken Schwartz co-founded Two Planks and a Passion Theatre in 1992 after graduating from the National Theatre School of Canada in both Technical-Production and Directing and doing a year of apprenticeships with theatres in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. He has directed over forty productions for Two Planks and a Passion including The Odyssey, Our Town, Rockbound, As You Like It, Dustbowl Joan, and The Tempest.

This season at Ross Creek, an evening at the theatre can be made even more remarkable with a talk, concert, reading, or other event to round out your understanding of the world the plays come from, or contemporary thinking brought out by the productions. The Grapevine (GV): How long has Nothing Less! been in development? What was the first spark that lit the idea?

Ken Schwartz (KS): We have been working on this project since the summer of 2015.

Although the subject matter might seem to be a reaction to the Trump era in America, we decided to pursue the story of Nova Scotian suffragists long before. Sometimes a play takes on an unexpected resonance while you are in the middle of development.

The idea originated with a sense that we have something to learn from those who came before us when it comes to political activism.

In this country, we are always engaged in a process of examining our democracy and attempting to make it more inclusive, just, and responsive to every citizen. This process never ends. Looking back 100 years allows us to both learn from these women – their passion, persistence, and intelligence – while also asking ourselves about the work ahead of us and what role we might play. Nothing Less! is meant to be a productive challenge to our audience. “What will you do tomorrow?”

GV: How has the collaboration worked?

Did you regularly work alongside each other, or did each of you take over certain aspects of the creation?

Ami McKay (AM): We collaborated on the script in several different ways: meeting together to brainstorm and create outlines; sending flurries of emails regarding history, music, and time period; and passing the script back and forth to shape each scene (sometimes in person, other times via email, depending on our schedules). Because I was writing and arranging the music, I’d often send Ken recordings and videos of pieces I thought would suit the script.

14TH ANNUAL DEEP ROOTS MUSIC FESTIVAL SEPTEMBER 21-24, 2017 The Deep Roots Music Festival is happy to announce its line-up for 2017. The annual festival takes place September 21 to 24 in Wolfville, Nova Scotia and the surrounding area. Through partnerships with the Atlantic Presenters Association and RADARTS, and Canadian Heritage’s Canada 150 Program, the festival will bring in exciting and diverse acts such as Juno winners Alex Cuba and The Swinging Belles. And to kick off the festival on Thursday, September 21, we have Lennie Gallant with his multimedia spectacle, Searching for Abegweit. This incredibly popular show is a fitting introduction to a celebration of our roots as our region shares the culture, language, and traditions of the Mi'kmaq and Acadian people who lived here long before the Canadian confederation.

The Friday evening Main Stage show at Festival Theatre will feature the return of Jonathan Byrd & the Pickup Cowboy, the Yves Lambert Trio from Quebec, rising star Kaia Kater, songwriter supreme Corin Raymond, and the Latin styling of Alex Cuba. We are thrilled that Coco Love Alcorn is also returning on Saturday, September 23 for a Main Stage set with a special appearance by the Annapolis Valley Honour Choir. Joel Plaskett, and his father Bill, will present songs from their latest offering, Solidarity. The night will also feature two interesting collaborations: Aerialists will join Emily Millard, formerly Miss Emily Brown; and Mary Beth Carty will team up with Cape Breton legend Howie MacDonald.

A Festival Pass gets you in to all the Main Stage shows, afternoon collaborations, and access to the Festival Club as ‘home base’ for the weekend. Passes are available for 3 or 4 days. Tickets for individual shows often sell out in advance of the event so get your passes or tickets now.

If you feel like dancing, you’re in luck. Deep Roots will present two dances at the Wolfville Farmers’ Market this year. Both late-night events will start after the conclusion of the Main Stage shows, and the market is located only a short walk from Festival Theatre. The first is a a blues bash on Friday, September 22 with a new and always-great Kicking Mule Blues Band and the 15-piece Bluesmobile in tow. Saturday late-night dance is sure to please with the Yves Lambert Trio (former leader of La Bottine Souriante) and, Halifax sensation, Roxy & the Underground Soul Sound!

Come to the Festival Tent with your kids on Saturday morning (September 23) for some fun crafts and Take Root! workshops.

Prepare for the Fresh Beats Rhythm Parade (which starts at noon) with hat, mask, and instrument making; drumming; and dressing up with Wee Giant puppets. The parade will be followed by a puppet performance of Goldilocks and the Three Bears by The Maritime Marionettes and then a kids’ music show with The Swinging Belles!

Darrin Harvey will host the Closing Concert on Sunday, September 24. He will reveal the annual Valley Arts Award recipient, lead his band Bluesmobile in the Festival Finale, and introduce Cape Breton hillbilly rockers Pretty Archie as well as some great local Nova Scotia acts such as The Dearlies, Sarah McInnis, Naming the Twins, and the Jill Boudreau Band. In May, we attended a PARC (Playwrights Atlantic Resource Centre) colony in Sackville, NB, where we were fortunate to spend a few days working on the script with a group of actors and dramaturge, Don Hannah. It gave us a great starting point for entering into the rehearsal process at Ross Creek!

GV: What was the research like for the historical basis of the play? Was it hard to find certain information or stories? Were you equally involved in that aspect of the pursuit?

AM: Ken graciously turned most of the research process over to me since I already had piles of notes from when I wrote The Birth House (which is also set in rural Nova Scotia during WWI). Using my notes as a starting point, I then went on a hunt for stories of women involved in the suffrage movement in rural Nova Scotia. They weren’t easy to find! Luckily, local historians like Wendy Elliott helped guide my journey. Without giving anything away, I’ll say that in the end, some absolutely amazing parts of the Canadian suffrage movement have found their way into the play.

GV: How did your anticipation of the Theatre Off the Grid performance inform your writing? Were there opportunities to weave in elements of that outdoor production style into the script?

KS: Creating work for Outdoor performance brings with it a whole series of interesting restrictions and opportunities. The location of the performance heavily influences the choices we make – movement, music, setting – every step forward is taken with a view to maximizing the unique experience of presenting outdoors. The fact that Nothing Less! takes place in a rural farm community is perhaps the clearest example of how our sense of place influences our creation process.

GV: You both live and work in very rural areas of Nova Scotia, and produce art that extends itself far beyond our Valley, how do you think your local landscape and communities have informed your work?

KS: The work that my collaborators and I create at Ross Creek is intrinsically connected to the farm where we work. Every piece that I select for development or production

has a profound link to the land. While I am preoccupied with the challenges facing people around the world, I express myself as an artist through the lens of rural life. In an increasingly digital world, I firmly believe that what makes the theatre essential is the potential to be grounded, together, in a direct relationship between audience and performer. Living in rural Nova Scotia has made these discoveries possible for me.

AM: I feel incredibly fortunate to call Nova Scotia home and to be part of its artistic community. When it comes to storytelling (in all its forms), the well of inspiration is profoundly deep. A late-night beach fire can spark new ideas. A hike at Cape Split can set the imagination spinning. Songs and stories bubble and roil in the tides, and I’ll happily spend the rest of my life chasing after them.

GV: With the creation and production of Nothing Less! supported by the Canada 150 Fund, why did you choose this aspect of our history to highlight in this way?

KS: About five years ago the Canadian Mint removed the “Famous Five” from the $50 bill and replaced their image with an Ice Breaker.

The reason they gave was that there was a new theme: “Canadian Accomplishment”. I think that incident says a lot about how women’s place in our history is marginalized, misunderstood, and quickly forgotten. While the play isn’t a history lesson, I hope it does serve as a call for all of us to pay attention, become engaged, and have the courage to speak out when it matters. I also hope it reminds every one of us that the right to vote is incredibly important. These women devoted their lives to gain that right, and we can’t take it for granted, no matter how disappointing the results might be from time to time.

AM: Women’s stories are everyone’s stories, and yet the historical record still has considerable catching up to do in recognizing that fact. Choosing to tell part of the story of the Canadian women’s struggle for the vote felt both important and timely. Ultimately, it’s a tale about equality, democracy, and finding your voice. What better way to acknowledge the past while keeping our eyes on the work that lies ahead?

THE FESTIVAL OF DANCE ANNAPOLIS ROYAL: August 15 to 19 The Festival of Dance Annapolis Royal (FODAR) returns this August to King's Theatre in Annapolis Royal. King's Theatre looks out across the Annapolis Basin to the spot where Champlain founded The Order of Good Cheer in 1606, and it's no surprise that inspiration and creativity are abundant. Annapolis Royal has a long history of celebrating the arts and since 2014, FODAR has called this historic town home. Since 2014, FODAR has grown substantially, and this year it has been curated to mark Canada 150 with a diverse program of artists and works including two classic Canadian modern dance pieces, dance theatre, indigenous hoop dance, and Spain’s hottest export – flamenco.

FODAR opens with a new feature this year: DANCE ON FILM will screen a spectacular documentary profiling the life and work of one of the most celebrated and influential choreographers of our time.

On Wednesday, August 16, our live performances begin and FODAR is right in the thick of Annapolis Royal’s celebrations that day, which include the Tall Ships sailing past in the waters just outside the King’s stage door.

Questioning Canada 150 On June 14, a discussion and reflection about Canada 150 and the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples was held at the KC Irving Centre. The event was planned and organized by Horizons Community Development Associates Inc., the Acadia Community Development program, and the Annapolis Valley Quakers. Among the panel of speakers was Kayla Mansfield-Brown, a young Mi’kmaw woman who described her experience as someone who is dealing with the fallout of intergenerational trauma. She explained that it is difficult to ‘just get over it’ when the cultural violence experienced by Indigenous peoples is still very recent, and the repercussions are manifested in ways that are passed down to younger generations. Speakers noted that they do not have a problem celebrating 150 years of confederation – but they would like to see more public discourse about what confederation means to the people who owned the land before European colonization.

Uncommon Common Art Launch This year marks the 10th anniversary for Uncommon Common Art (UCA). Artists, board members, supporters, and stakeholders celebrated at the newly opened Horton Ridge Taproom on June 15. The beautiful venue overlooks an art installation by Holly Carr – Stop 2 of 20 on the 2017 UCA tour. Over the past ten years UCA has created over 140 art

installations and has provided art education to over 5,000 children across Kings County. It is a project that has stimulated conversations about public art in Kings County, and since its inception Wolfville has implemented a public art policy and Kentville is currently working on one. As a 10th year project, Artistic Director Terry Drahos unrolled a UCA ‘gift shop’ as unique as the UCA project itself. The ‘gift shop’ is in the form of four gumball machines that dispense 2.5-inch plastic balls with an original work by a local artist inside. The machines are called Eye Candy and features different UCA artists in each one. Tokens cost $20 and the machines are located in the Harvest Gallery, the Acadia Cinema lobby, the Kentville Library, and the Kings County Museum. Kingsport Gala Days Sandcastle Competition It was a beautiful summer day on Sunday, June 25, for the annual Kingsport Gala Days Sandcastle competition at Kingsport beach.

The beach was filled with families building sand structures of all sorts - from large compounds with several buildings (and a grassy pasture for horses) to mountain ranges with waterfalls and hidden valleys. There was even a Canada 150 birthday cake made of sand!

This was the second year for the event sponsored by the Kingsport Osteopathy Clinic.

LEARN TO VIBE CONCERT: SOUL BROTHER MIKE AND CRISSI COCHRANE Mike Butler

Last year, I had the pleasure of writing a Who’s Who profile about a young, incredible musician named Crissi Cochrane and I promised to let you readers know the next time she was coming to the Valley for a show.

Well, here it is! On July 6, in the Al Whittle Theatre’s Studio–Z, Crissi and her husband Michael Paul (aka Soul Brother Mike), will rock the room. Soul Brother Mike has just released a new album called Learn to Vibe that he’ll be promoting and you don’t want to miss this show! And since Crissi already had her profile, here’s a little bit about Mike.

Michael Paul is a 28-year-old soul singer-songwriter from Windsor, Ontario. Under the stage name Soul Brother Mike, he’s been recording and releasing original songs since he was 14 years old. Mike has had a pretty exciting career in the music industry over the past decade in a couple of different bands, but he’s now working as a solo artist. He’s spent nearly his whole life operating out of Windsor, Ontario, but loves to travel to the East Coast of Canada, where he met his wife Crissi.

He states, “My specialty is writing and arranging. I'm like a child with a toy when it comes to instruments and words. I love music because it can be anything. Songs can be fun or serious. I can create all kinds of different feelings and experiences, and it's why I've been a prolific writer my whole life. On my website you can find more than a dozen releases ranging from folk to indie rock to soul, jazz, and blues music. I don't always fall

Mike and Crissi both love Nova Scotia and the Annapolis Valley and Mike treats the area like a second home. His family has a small cottage on one of the many small lakes in NS, and Mike calls it ‘heaven on earth’. It's also where, a few years ago, he really sat down and focused on music theory and developed a lot of his skills. He and Crissi were also married here so there’s that wonderful connection.

Every Thursday night, from 6pm to 9pm, you can order a pound of chicken wings for $6. Not only is that an awesome deal but… are you ready… you can choose from over 25 different flavours of sauce in which to drench your chicken wings. And to further whet your appetite (and curiosity) owners Jessica Newell and Rick Primrose have hinted that there may soon be even more chicken wing flavours to choose from. For now, you can try enticing flavours with names like Zydeco, Island Mist, Ginger Bee Wings, Island Jamm’in Wings, Slow Fire, and China Town to name just the few that we tried at my table. The flavours varied from hot and spicy to sweet with unique combinations and permutations. Some we tried had a smooth curry flavour while some were tangy with an Asian flare. You can have your wings tossed in sauce or get a small cup of sauce on the side. We opted to try ours on the side so we could all try each other’s and look for a favourite. If I had to pick – from the ones we tried – I’d have to give a nod to Island Mist with its exotic pineapple curry and sweet & sour combo. Amazing.

But Applewoods has taken them to a whole new level in the Valley.

Spinach and Crab dip with Nachos is a delicious appetizer we tried while we waited for our wings

Happy summer! This time of year finds me with a spring in my step. Swimming with the kids, weeding, reading, sleeping in, adventuring, and stuffing my face with fresh vegetables is what summer means to me. Finding new ways to cook up my favourite greens makes me pretty happy, too!

Real Shakshouka, a luscious Middle Eastern dish of eggs poached in a rich sauce, is thick with tomatoes and tender chili peppers, redolent of garlic and olive oil. My Green Shakshouka keeps the garlic and olive oil but uses the tender early summer greens, asparagus and early zucchini, that are everywhere right now. It's not authentic, but it's very delicious, simple, and satisfying.

You can make this with any greens you like but a combination of baby kale, swiss chard, and spinach is my favourite right now. If you like, you could leave out the eggs and serve the vegetables as a side dish or as a component in a summer grain bowl, with grilled chicken or tofu and the herb oil drizzled over.

A deluxe breakfast dish, this also makes a beautiful summer meal for the #putaneggonit crowd.

My neighbours Michael and Layla keep happy chickens that lay scrumptious eggs. I bet your neighbours do too. If not, look for beautiful eggs from Emily of Hen of the Woods at the North Mountain Market. She also has sunflower sprouts, the perfect garnish for this dish.

Green Shakshouka • 2 or 3 tablespoons Olive Oil • 1 large Onion, sliced thickly • 8 oz (two big handfuls) tender greens, such as baby Kale, Swiss Chard, and Spinach • 2 cloves Garlic, 2 bulbs Green Garlic, or 2 Garlic Scapes, finely sliced • 1 small Zucchini, sliced; or 6 Asparagus Spears, chopped (or both) • 1/2 teaspoon Salt • 4 Eggs For the Herb Oil • Olive Oil • 1 clove Garlic or 1 Garlic Scape, thinly sliced • A large handful mixed herbs like Arugula, Spearmint, Basil, Tarragon, and Parsley • Pinch of Chili Flakes

In a heavy frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions, stir to coat with the olive oil, then cover. Let cook a few minutes, stirring when you think of it, until the onion has browned a bit. Add a tablespoon of water and stir, then cover again. After a few

more minutes the onions should be tender and lightly caramelized.

Meanwhile, wash the greens well, leaving the water clinging to the leaves. When the onions are ready, pile the greens, garlic, zucchini or asparagus, and salt into the pan on top of the onions, add another tablespoon of water, and cover again. Let cook for 4 or 5 minutes, until the greens are tender. Turn the heat to low, and with the back of a spoon, make four evenly spaced wells in the greens. Carefully break an egg into each well and cover the pan. Cook for 5-10 minutes, until the eggs are cooked to your liking.

Meanwhile, place the garlic, herbs, and chilies in the blender or food processor and mince finely. While the machine is running, drizzle in enough olive oil to make a runny paste.

Add a big pinch of salt. Alternatively, chop the garlic and herbs together until finely minced, then place in a small bowl and stir in the chili flakes, olive oil, and salt.

Carefully serve up the shakshouka and drizzle with the herb oil.

WHO'S WHO: CHIEF SIDNEY PETERS Mike Butler What a true honour it is to share this 'Who’s Who' profile with you! This fascinating man came my way via recommendation (which sometimes produces the most interesting 'Who’s Who' articles), and I am so thankful my email was working that day! It has been a superb experience getting to know Chief Sidney Peters through our interview and I’m delighted to share his story with you.

Chief Sidney Peters is the 13th of 14 children to the past Chief Joseph Peters and Doris Peters. He was born and raised in Middleton, Nova Scotia, before moving to Truro to enroll in the Agricultural College where he graduated with a Technology Diploma in Agricultural Modernization. Chief Sidney has been married to his wife Darlene for over 30 years and they have two children, who they are incredibly proud of – Dylan, 21 and Joecy,17.

Since graduating from the Truro college, Chief Sidney has worked predominantly in Aboriginal housing with various organizations including, but not limited to, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and the Native Council of Nova Scotia. In 2003, he worked in Labrador and worked as a consultant on the Natuashish Housing Authority on the relocation. In 2006, he became the Senior Advisor on Aboriginal Housing with CMHC and remained in the position until 2009 when he moved to The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (CMM) as the Manager of Lands, Environment, and Natural Resources. Then in 2012, Chief Sidney decided to run for Chief of Glooscap First Nation, his home community, and as you can tell by how I address him in this article – he got the job!

He states, “I am the elected Chief of Glooscap First Nation just outside Hantsport. I represent the interests of the 375 members of Glooscap at the municipal, provincial, and federal level of government. I also act as the Chair of the Glooscap Ventures Board of Directors representing the business interests of Glooscap First Nation. Furthermore, I am the Co-Chair of the Assembly of All Chiefs representing all 13 Nova Scotia First Nations communities in their relationship with government at various levels. I was first elected in 2012 just after Glooscap went through a crisis. I wanted to come into my community and help transform it into a thriving community focused on accountability, transparency, and doing what is best for our members. On a more personal note I wanted to continue and fulfill the vision that my dad had started and his passion for helping his community succeed.”

In his spare time ( of which doesn’t seem to be very much!) Chief Sidney likes to play music and travel. Every year he and his family take a special vacation somewhere different to see and experience this big beautiful world we live in, and it’s very rewarding for everyone. I ask all the people I profile what they love best about living or working in the Valley and surrounding area and it always produces some of my favourite answers. For Chief Sid, he states, “I love the relationships and partnerships that we’ve been able to develop. We have very positive relationships with both of the municipalities. Glooscap sits right on the Kings/West Hants border and we work very well with both. We appreciate the willingness of our counterparts in municipal government to work with us. This is where I am originally from so there is a wonderful sense of home when I see Blomidon from the 101. The Valley is an inspirational place to live and work.”

And that lends itself well to Chief Sid’s work, which is as inspirational as the place from where it stems.

With so many accomplishments already, Chief Sid shows no signs of slowing down or stopping, his projects provide constant work and enjoyment for him. As Chief, he would like to continue to build on the work that he has accomplished at Glooscap over the past five to six years. Chief Sidney and his co-workers have implemented policies and procedures to ensure their membership is aware of everything they are doing and are in agreement with the direction they are taking the community. Chief Sidney wants to see every member of Glooscap being proud of who they are and of their community. They have focused on bringing the Mi’kmaq culture and language back to Glooscap as well as focusing on creating a sustainable and welcoming community.

Ideally, through their economic development, they would like to bring as many of their members as possible back to the area to work and live.

It was a pleasure to have Chief Sidney Peters on board for this Canada 150 issue of The Grapevine and I thank him for his work and dedication to the continued education and development of programs that will help sustain the heritage of Glooscap First Nation. It’s an inspiration! Thank You!

Nova Scotia publisher John MacIntyre scored a number one Canadian bestseller this weekend with his new book You Might Be from Canada If.... The book topped the Globe and Mail’s national bestseller list based on bookstore sales across the country. Featuring cartoons by Nova Scotia cartoonist Michael de Adder, the book has been in stores for just a few weeks.

The publishing house MacIntyre Purcell is one of a dozen Nova Scotia firms in expansion mode thanks to new support from the province's Creative Industries Fund. Previous

books by Michael de Adder have been local bestsellers, but this is the first time at the top of the national list for both publisher and author.

"This is a great early success in our industry's plan to grow over the next five years," says Nova Scotia publisher Jim Lorimer of Formac Publishing, a member of the steering committee that is working with the province on industry strategy. FOUNDER OF MODERN TRIBAL FUSION BELLY DANCE COMING TO WOLFVILLE Angie Oriana Jenkins, 'Wolfville's Belly Dancing Herbalist' Back in my early days of belly dance (mid 90s), I took a break from more traditional forms of Classical Egyptian belly dance and became enamored with the emerging Tribal Fusion style that was being developed in San Francisco.

Having a best friend who lived there, I visited the area a few times and made sure to get in as many classes and performances as I could with the pioneers of this new movement.

There was this funky little Mediterranean restaurant I visited to see a troupe that was all the rage... Ultra Gypsy! They were fusing more traditional forms of belly dance with modern dance, ballet, Flamenco, jazz, hip hop, and more to appeal to a wide audience. They did a choreography to an Arabic/Reggae song by Natacha Atlas that completely blew my mind (and coin belt!). I was forever changed and needed to expand my dance practice to include this exciting and innovative form. Also happening in the Bay area at this time was the development of the American Tribal Style form which rocked the scene with its blending of multicultural neo-tribal costuming, modern electronica tribal beats, and group improv format.

And, in the middle of both of these belly dance revolutions, there was a young woman named Jill Parker. She was an original member of Fat Chance Belly Dance, the first ATS troupe, and went on to develop the aforementioned troupe – Ultra Gypsy. It is fair to say that Jill is now a belly dance legend and, according to her website, 'founder of the modern Tribal Fusion dance phenomenon'.

And she is coming to our wee rural town of Wolfville to share her magic with us!!

Being so far away from any big cities with more of a selection of advanced teachers, it can be difficult for experienced Nova Scotian dancers to stay inspired. I have endeavored to keep myself and my students challenged by inviting a variety of celebrity dancers to our town. Both Rose Harden and Kami Liddle have visited us during the last seven years and both teachers/performers were warmly welcomed with well-attended workshops and shows. Likewise, dancers from all over Atlantic Canada will be shimmying their way down our streets to hear Jill's lectures on 'The Lineage and History of Tribal Fusion Belly Dance' and 'The Intriguing Topic of Sensuality in Belly Dance'.

And then there's the big show! On Saturday, July 8 at 8pm, the Al Whittle Theatre will be filled with performers and lovers of all types of belly dance. Included are the well-known Serpentine Studios crew from Halifax, Barbara Aubie from Studio Sephira in Moncton, my very own Sister Lotus students, and more!

BERWICK'S UNSUNG AFFORDABLE HOUSING Gene Keyes

Mary Jo and I had lived in rental apartments in Halifax for many years, but by 2003 when we were ready to retire on a shoestring, we needed something that would fit our very small budget. Certainly the 6-digit price of houses was out of reach. Mobile homes were a possibility, but they were scarce in the HRM. So Mary Jo got on the Web and found a small town called Berwick in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley — where a senior was selling her mobile home, in a park within walking distance to grocery stores, clinics, etc. Great for us, who never had a car, and always got around by bus or bike!

We got a very inexpensive one there, and spent twice as much over several years refurbishing it: better insulation, new windows and doors, new pitched roof, and a mini-split heat pump, which combines winter heat and summer air conditioning.

I am always amazed at how well we live, despite a poverty-level income. It is because we avoid two major expenses: a car, and a full-size house. I am also surprised at how seldom the mobile-home option is discussed or available as affordable housing. Since we came to Chute's Mobile Home Park almost 14 years ago, the name has changed to “West Point Homes”. The official new terminology is “land-lease communities” instead of “trailer parks”, and mobile homes are now called “manufactured housing”. Our first visitors were Bob and Mona Wallace, old-timers here, who began the Douglas Avenue Neighborhood Watch (currently led by Jane Perry), whereby residents keep an eye open for suspicious

intruders and homes when the owner is out of town, etc. Crime reports are a rarity now, although several years ago, one resident used a provincial program to displace a drug dealer.

The founder of West Point Homes is Lewis Chute, a long-time civic personage in Berwick (who made 83,000 concrete blocks for the original Town Hall). His wife, Inez, does the bookkeeping; his daughter, Kathryn Morse, is the manager; and her son Nathan, does maintenance. They have also been seeking to upgrade the park, by seeing to it that junky dwellings are not brought in, and that new or existing ones have pitched roofs. Last year, Nathan graded a walking path in and around the former sand quarry nearby, and they have even erected a Berwick-style entry sign in a stone flower bed.

I commend Lewis Chute for constructing this facility, and only wish there were more of them. In a town like Berwick with many retirees, we should not have only expensive housing and rentals. There is certainly a need, and room, to have well-run and affordable land-lease communities.

The question of the decade – which town has the best service -- will be answered Saturday, July 8, on the tennis courts at Rotary Park in Wolfville.

The Mayors of Wolfville and Kentville, along with their selected doubles partner from respective councils, will battle it out in a challenge match to determine which town has the best service, as well as other important civic issues such as: most offensive backhand, most effective court argument, or best tennis fashions. A large vocal crowd of fanatical fans is expected to be on hand.

The occasion is the Wolfville Tennis Club’s 40th Anniversary Celebration in The Park. It begins around 10:30 and continues through to early afternoon. The Mayhem of Mayors will begin at approximately 12:15pm. It will be preceded by an exhibition of top provincial junior players, and followed by anniversary cake cutting, and presentation of service awards to long time tennis club members.

Unconfirmed reports have suggested that residents near the tennis courts in both Kentville and Wolfville have noted court lights turned on well after midnight on many occasions the past week. Individuals purported to look like Mayors Jeff Cantwell of Wolfville and Sandra Snow of Kentville, were reported to be working with a series of potential partners and coaches. These reports could not be confirmed.

The public is welcome at the celebrations and encouraged to picnic in yhe park with their families.

Melanie Priesnitz, Conservation Horticulturist Scary tales of ticks and lyme disease have been prevalent in the news lately. I see this as a good thing, as education is the first step towards prevention. What is unfortunate is that the media hype is scaring people. I’ve heard many folks say that they are afraid to spend time in the woods. There is no denying that lyme disease is a terrible thing, however staying indoors is not the answer. The average Canadian sits for 10 hours a day which can lead to its own serious string of health issues including heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, and depression just to name a few.

So how do we safely get outside and stay active during tick season? There are many ways to manage the risk. Most of us couldn’t imagine letting our kids ride their bikes without a helmet, it’s how we reduce the risk of head injury while still allowing freedom. We need to approach walking and playing in the woods in the same way. There are hazards everywhere, we need to approach them with rational heads and educate ourselves on prevention.

Blacklegged ticks carry the bacteria that can cause lyme disease. Not every tick carries it and not everyone bitten will be affected. The transfer of the bacteria can only happen after the tick has finished filling itself with blood, which usually takes up to 36 hours. So early detection is key. Get yourself and your family in the habit of doing tick checks. Showering a few hours after coming inside helps remove any crawling creatures. There are numerous

essential oils derived from plants that may work as deterrents including lavender, tomato leaves, rosemary, lemongrass, and garlic.

Blacklegged ticks prefer to live in cool, damp areas such as in long grass in shady areas.

They are less likely to be found in full sun, dry areas. If you’re worried about ticks in your yard there are some simple landscaping practices that you can implement such as removing brush piles, keeping play areas in full sun and choosing plants that thrive in drier conditions. The government of Nova Scotia has a website that contains a landscape manual on how to help deter ticks from your yard. It also has practical tips on reducing the risk of infection. novascotia.ca/dhw/cdpc/ lyme.asp My favourite way to manage the risk while still feeling safe to work and play outside is to adopt the very fashionable habit of wearing long pants tucked into my socks. Help me make it a local fashion standard! Teaching our children not to be afraid of the great outdoors is essential to their mental and physical health.
