A cyclist at heart will take any opportunity available to explore a new path or take a new road. It’s in our nature; it’s what keeps us heading out time after time, day after day, and mile after mile. The Valley has a unique ability to engage and capture a cyclist's heart with only a few rides as its many wonders unfold before you every time you set out. Nowhere else in this country can I think of a place where I can leave my front door, ride for 100km, and not ride the same road twice. I could easily find myself doing the same thing on our many gravel roads the very next day (should my legs allow).

One thing is sure, no matter what We are so lucky to have enough variety in the terrain to be able to bike you ride or how you ride it, alter a ride to just what we desire. the Valley is a gift for any cyclist.

If you’re feeling strong, the North and South mountains will always entertain, while you can otherwise pretend they don’t exist and just avoid them! One thing is sure, no matter what bike you ride or how you ride it, the Valley is a gift for any cyclist. We have an abundance of mountain bike trails and the Valley is home to some of the best trail builders around. We also have miles of beaches and suitable terrain for fat-biking when the time is right. The thing is, there is always an attractive option for an amazing ride. This fact is not lost on the many cyclists who call the Valley home. You’ll hear the excitement in our voices. It’s the buzz at the bike shop and the background noise in the coffee shops. We share our stories and dream up new adventures daily. If you listen closely, you might just catch the excitement we all share.

WHO'S WHO: PAMELA HALSTEAD: ALL HER WORLD'S A STAGE! Mike Butler It’s no mystery to my friends, family, and my readers that I am a huge live theatre buff—both as a performer and as a spectator/supporter.

Pamela Halstead, years ago, transformed herself into German director Leni Riefenstahl for the production The Blue Light and I was frontrow centre at the Bus Stop Theatre in Halifax to see it, and I was blown away! That play, and Pamela’s stunning performance, has stuck with me over the years, and now I have the honour of featuring Pamela in my column.

Pamela Halstead grew up in St. Stephen, NB and went to Halifax to go to attend King's/Dalhousie and study theatre. She has lived, and/ or worked in theatre, in almost every province across Canada, but in 2011, she moved back to Nova Scotia full time. Pamela states, “I am a professional theatre director primarily, but I still do some acting and teaching as well. I also run the PERFORM! program for Theatre Nova Scotia which sends professional artists into the public school system. I got started in theatre because of a fabulous high school teacher named Ray Dencer who had trained in theatre

in the UK. He ran a high school drama club like a professional theatre company and as a result a number of people from St. Stephen went on to theatre in some capacity.”

As an actor Pamela has worked for a number of companies in the Maritimes including Theatre New Brunswick, Mulgrave Road Theatre, OneLight Theatre, and Ship's Company Theatre. Her work as a director has taken Pamela across the country for numerous companies, from Neptune Theatre here in Nova Scotia, to the Chemainus Theatre Festival on Vancouver Island. She says, “One of the things I love about creating theatre, is the research that goes into every show. Some of my favourite shows have had extensive background research.”

Pamela is back in Wolfville for the summer directing Valley Summer Theatre’s production of Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) playing at the Al Whittle Theatre from July

6 to July 31. It is a clever, fantastical, and hilarious show. This is a must-see production for it’s stellar cast; sharp directing; and the unique, magical, and humorous script. About ‘Desdemona’ Pamela says, “On this show I am working with the amazing Jackie Torrens for the first time, as well as a number of other artists including Wolfville native, Emma Slipp. James MacLean is an artist whom I have had my eye on for a while and now get to direct. I have done a number of shows with Andrea Lee Norwood, including Educating Rita at Valley Summer Theatre. She is a joy to work with and one of the best we have in Nova Scotia. Bruce Tubbe worked for me at Ship's Company Theatre in Parrsboro and is thrilled to be back in Wolfville and will even get to attend his reunion at Acadia this summer. I am also excited to reunite with a number of designers who I love working with

and to add the exciting costume design talents of Jordyn Bochon to our VST team. It is going to look amazing!”

I know from experience that actors always have other projects looming. The project Pamela is most excited for is a play called Speed Dating for Sperm Donors by Natalie Meisner, originally from Lockeport. It will be playing at Neptune from Sept 20 - Oct 9. It’s a fun and touching show that came out of Natalie's, and her wife's, two-year journey to find a sperm donor. Make sure you mark your calendars for that one!

Pamela’s goal in theatre is to always tell interesting stories in a way that brings the show alive for the audience. She wants to entertain and inspire, make people laugh, and look at the world in a different way. All of her work before and including Goodnight Desdemona, (Good Morning Juliet) certainly has done that!

by Pamela’s work and I feel very blessed to have such an incredible talent involved in another season of Valley Summer Theatre.

THE GRAPEVINE QUESTIONNAIRE: THE DOOR YOU CAME IN Susan Wedlock Author David Macfarlane and musician Douglas Cameron have created an extraordinary performance of spoken word and music based on Macfarlane’s 2001 historical memoir The Danger Tree. The title of this performance piece is "The Door You Came In: Songs and Stories From The Danger Tree" and it plays at The Evergreen Theatre in Margaretsville, July 22. More info: evergreentheatre.ca Susan: David, why did you originally write The Danger Tree? What did you want readers to learn from it?

David: When I was a boy our family went to Newfoundland for our summer holidays because that’s where my mother was from. For the most part, her family was still there – mostly in the Grand Falls area. So a lot of my childhood summers were spent listening to Newfoundlanders tell stories – not a bad early education for a writer! So part of the answer to your question is, I just loved the stories. But another part is because I realized that the stories would disappear if I didn’t grab them first. I’d like to think that

Susan: Is there really a “Danger Tree” and what is its significance?

David: On July 1, 1916, the Newfoundland Regiment took part in the first day of Haig’s Somme offensive. The Newfoundlanders were by no means an exception to the rule. The Somme was generally a disaster. The advancing Newfoundland regiment was pretty much wiped-out within half-an-hour of going over the top. The actual Danger Tree was a bit of an old dead stump that Newfoundland soldiers used as a marker for the beginning of No Man’s Land.

Susan: Why is this performance piece called “The Door You Came In”?

David: My mother always used to say to visitors “Be sure to leave by the door you came in.” She said it was an old Newfoundland belief that if you didn’t leave by the door you came in you’d take the luck out of the house. Douglas came to my mother’s funeral, and he noted that every speaker mentioned this saying. So he wrote a munity, and I am proud to be both a resident of Wolfville and a loud and proud gay man. Pride Week is upon us and there are some awesome events taking place. As a member or supporter of the gay community, you’re all welcome to participate and show your pride in yourself, show your support of those you love, and come out and have fun!

song. More or less at the same time, I was starting to think about a story that would be built around the idea of reading to my mother in the last few weeks of her life. So when I heard the song Douglas wrote for the first time, I realized we were already starting to tell the same story.

Susan: What made you decide to collaborate with a musician and tell the story in a different way?

David: When I published a novel called The Figures of Beauty I wanted to read a passage at the book launch that made reference to an Italian song from the Second World War. It’s a familiar melody but I didn’t think many people would know the title, and I really wanted some sense of that song to hang over the passage I was reading.

So I asked Douglas to accompany me. He worked out a nice arrangement for classical guitar, and he slowed down what was essentially a marching tune, making it something quite haunting. And we were both immediately struck with the power of combining spoken word with music. We didn’t need to spend a whole lot of time talking ourselves into trying something on a bigger scale.

Susan: Can you describe the process of collabolunch and dress in your best Pride gear! Also, from 1pm-3pm at Box of Delights Bookshop on Wolfville's Main Street, you can enjoy the art and readings of comic artist Sfé R. Monster.

Douglas: The Danger Tree was about to be re-released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first world war so we figured it would be a good project - as well, I have a connection to Newfoundland music. I re-read the book and then David and I began a series of meetings and conversations to explore what we wanted to do both musically and with the story. We ended up spending a few days at his mother’s house in Hamilton shortly after she had passed away and mapped out our approach. I went away and began composing some music and David went away and started working on the text. We eventually had something to perform and did so just a couple of months later. The project has grown from there.

Susan: Would you say this is a play or a reading?

Douglas: It would seem to be both and neither.

It’s really a hybrid - part play, part concert, part reading, part improvisation. It seems to be a piece that allows the audience to build the stories in their imagination.

THE VALLEY LOVES BICYCLES! Emily Leeson

In fact, towns and communities across the Annapolis Valley are taking part in the bicycle buzz. Businesses, programs, and services relating to the sport are popping up throughout the Valley. Kentville Recreation has recently launched Women on Wheels, a beginner bike-riding program for women. Participants meet at the Kentville Recreation Centre every Monday evening at 6pm and the program will run until mid-October. The importance of having access to the necessary gear has not been lost on the local community either. The Recycle Your Bicycle Program is aimed at distributing renovated bicycles to families and community members on a per need basis. Donations of unused bikes can be dropped off at the Fundy YMCA (1043 Hwy 1, Cornwallis), Kentville Recreation (354 Main St., Kentville), or West Hants Recreation (76 Morison Dr., Windsor).

Once you get a taste for biking, there is no

telling how far you’ll take it. Bicycle Nova Scotia recently projected that there will be twenty-eight competitive cycling events in Nova Scotia during 2016. On July 2, the Race the Reservoir Mountain Bike event, sponsored

by TrailFlow Outdoor Adventures, took place in Wolfville. According to co-owner Michelle Marcinkiewicz, “This was the third year for Race the Reservoir [which is] the third in this year's Bicycle Nova Scotia cross-country mountain bike race series. We had over 90 racers attend from all over the province and over 60 spectators — more than ever before. Conditions were extremely dry and dusty. Participants loved the new course this year which is more open and flowy than previous years.” Looking towards 2017, the Town of Kentville and TrailFlow have already jointly applied to host a Canada Cup event, which would be the first one in Nova Scotia in over fifteen years.

And even if you’re not interested in the competitive side of things or the long-haul treks, there is still an aspect of bicycling for everyone to enjoy. Throughout the Annapolis Valley the abandoned rail lines are being developed into a multi-use trail system; the connection between Wolfville and Kentville in particular is now groomed for cyclists. The route is a perfect way to enjoy a scenic trip and is popular among locals and tourists alike. “We love biking the new trail behind town" says Wolfville resident Sarah Anderson. "We go to the splash pad in New Minas and to Stirlings for tacos! Hannah is on the front of the bike. She loves it. We don't mind biking the road but the trail is quieter and makes for better dog spotting - which is becoming a sport in our family.” All in all, it appears as though bicycling in the Valley has never been better!

The Annapolis Valley has clearly entered the age of the bicycle. On June 3 at the Wolfville Farmers' Market, Scott Brison announced the significant contribution of $799,500 from the Government of Canada to Bicycle Nova Scotia towards the Blue Route, a bicycle route network aiming to connect the province with 3000km of designated bicycle routes. According to Brison, "New visitors; active living; and healthier, connected communities are part of a Blue Route cycle that will pay big dividends. Biking enthusiasts, here at home and abroad, will have an unparalleled opportunity to explore Nova Scotia as never before, while helping to contribute to a cleaner environment.” Along with the contribution from the Government of Canada, and substantial funding from the Province of Nova Scotia, significant in-kind contributions have been made by trail associations throughout the province, as well as by the towns and municipalities along the proposed routes.

Last month, the Farmers’ Markets of Nova Scotia (FMNS) interviewed a selection of current and new farmers about the future of farming in Nova Scotia. One of the recurring topics that arose from these interviews was the role Farmers’ Markets play in fostering young farmers.

According to Jocelyn Durston, co-owner of Seven Acres Farm, “Farmers’ markets offer a low-cost, low-pressure venue to build relationships with customers and explore market potential,” says Durston. Durston and her partner Chris Kasza moved to Nova Scotia from British Columbia, in search of farmland.

Now in their second year of farming outside of Canning, Seven Acres Farm sells at the Tantallon Village Farmers’ Market and the Wolfville Farmers’ Market. “I love farmers’ markets and likely wouldn’t be where I am as a self-employed farmer without them” Durston says.

Keltie Butler, Executive Director of Farmers’ Markets of Nova Scotia, feels that farmers’ markets undoubtedly play a role in increasing local agriculture production and consumption.

“Farmers’ Markets offer extraordinary access to delicious, fresh, healthy, local food. They provide communities with agricultural aware-

ness and invite relationship between producer and consumer.” Butler says.

The Provincial Government, under EGSPA, has set a goal that by the year 2020, 20% of the food purchased in Nova Scotia will be produced in Nova Scotia. The Ivany Report echoes and furthers this goal, calling for a doubling of the value of agricultural products produced in Nova Scotia for the local market.

Courtney Webster, a young farmer and co-owner of Olde Furrow Farm in the Annapolis Valley, would also like to see this goal achieved. “I wish customers could really see how much impact their purchases make. Some years you squeak by and think 'thank god that guy had to buy 50lbs of pickling cucumbers... now we have enough to pay the light bill!'"

Market, where they are able to speak directly with customers. “Through the sharing of education on the benefits of purchasing a local product, consumers can understand that they are helping in more ways than one when choosing local” Webster says.

Durston echoes Courtney’s sentiment. “I’d love to challenge Nova Scotians to commit to doing their grocery shopping at a farmers’ market once a week for a month - and using this as an opportunity to see how eating in season can be so satisfying and how the quality of the food compares to what is found elsewhere.”

DINNER OUT: BARRELLING TIDE DISTILLERY Scott Campbell In the heart of Port Williams – tucked in behind the Port Pub – on a little side road – on your way to Starr’s Point, is the Barrelling Tide Distillery. Don’t let the unassuming location sway you though. This brand new distillery is producing some of the boldest flavours around. I was able to have a tour last week and found myself thrilled by the caliber of the professionalism and elegance evident in this small distilling operation. Owners, Russell and Colleen Murphy have gone above and beyond with this project and have created one of the most impressive distilleries in the

province. They are an independent craft distillery that supports local, using quality grown ingredients – much from here in the Valley.

The resulting distilled product is nothing short of amazing.

I took advantage of the tasting and quickly realized I was going to have a hard time deciding on a favourite. They feature a selection of liqueurs – haskap, cherry, and cranberry – that are all delicious and any one of them would be a fantastic summer treat just served over ice or ice cream. They also feature a gin which, if you enjoy a gin and tonic on the patio on a

hot day, you need to try this one. The flavour is unique with fantastic citrus scents. If I had to pick a favourite I think I would go for the Tidal Run Unaged Molasses Spirit. This is similar to rum (only not cask aged) and has an enticing butterscotch aroma and unexpected smoothness. It would be fantastic in a refreshing Cuba Libré. If you have a chance, check out this new gem in Port Williams. You won’t be disappointed. Cheers.

In the coming months a volunteer Cittaslow Committee will be identifying projects to strengthen and enhance our role in this international network of slow cities. HIKE IT BABY: WOLFVILLE AREA’S FAMILY HIKING GROUP Avery Peters facebook.com/groups/hikeitbabywolfville/hikeitbaby.com Search for Wolfville under “Find your City” Hiking was invaluable to me during my first pregnancy with my son, Llewyn, as I wrapped my head around the new phase of life my husband and I were about to enter. We had just moved to Wolfville, and we found our house right next to the Woodland Trails of Acadia University. I couldn't help myself – I was down in the forest every day with our dog.

In the early stages of pregnancy, after living here for a few months, I realized that my usual trail-running didn’t work for me. So, I fully immersed myself in hiking, even if it was just for 30 minutes or so. I hiked right up until the birth of Llewyn. It did get a little more difficult throughout pregnancy (especially with all the snow that winter!). I just took things at my pace and enjoyed the trees if I had to stop for a moment.

Hiking has also gotten my family through all sorts of seasons of life, especially the difficult ones. It is a place to think and process all that is happening. We have so many good hike memories now. The most recent being a 6.5 km hike in the desert of Joshua Tree National Park in California, where one of my sisters and her family now live. It was the first time the whole extended family has been together in two years.

After Llewyn was born (just over a year ago), and as soon as I could, I was out on the trail. He was born after the winter of endless snow, so it took a while for the trails to clear. We hiked all through the summer and snowshoed through his first winter. It has been a joy to share the magic of a still winter morning, with snow gently resting on the branches, with Llewyn.

We named him Llewyn Forrester after our love for the forest. He has taken to the name – his most often used sign is for “tree". He does not have too many words yet, but it is such a pleasure to watch him, in a small moment of quiet reflection on the trail together, as he begins to sign tree while the breeze blows through the branches. I love sharing this passion for the forest with him and yet can’t wait for our hikes in the future when he walks and explores on his own.

Now I am pregnant with our second child and I find myself hiking with two babies attached to me. I will do it as long as I can, or until I have to recruit someone else to carry Llewyn (or head to stroller-friendly trails). Hiking is what keeps me happy, and Llewyn happy too. Whenever we don’t know what to do with ourselves, we just get out on the trail. The forest has been my place of meditation – a sacred place.

This love of hiking as a “newish” mother makes me want to share it with other mothers and families and to share how hiking is such a great way to get family and friends together. It’s a great way to recharge, reflect, and reconnect with ourselves, and each other, when life is good or when it gets overwhelming. It is such a powerful and simple thing. Whenever I hike, I feel better in so many ways and I think sharing it with kids right from the beginning is so important.

It is my goal to show families how hiking can be accessible at any stage in our children’s lives

(including the very early stages!) and to share the joy of being outdoors with them. This is one of the reasons why I am starting a group in the Wolfville area called “Hike it Baby.” It is a non-profit international group with branches across North America and in a few other countries as well. A woman in Portland, Oregon, started it in the summer of 2013 and now there are 186 branches in five countries.

We will be hiking once a week throughout the Wolfville area (check our Facebook page by searching for “Hike it Baby Wolfville”). There will be stroller-friendly hikes, toddler-friendly hikes, and baby carrier trail hikes that will be easy or moderate. I will strive to give you as much information about each trail as possible and we’ll be creating an inventory of hikes and what is required in terms of energy/fitness level and baby gear. There are so many great pockets in the Valley, let’s explore them with our kids together.

And to keep you and your little ones energized on the trail, I just have to include my and Llewyn’s favourite snack. I got the idea from my friend Kira. She makes these all the time with so many variations of ingredients. The main thing is to use dates or apricots (or other dried fruits) as the binder. You can include some chocolate chips, but Llewyn isn’t quite old enough for those, so here’s a more baby/early toddler-friendly version that I created. Llewyn would gobble up one after another if I let him.

¼ cup almonds ½ cup pepitas/pumpkin seeds Blend in food processor to reach desired size (smaller for younger children, larger if you like a little crunch). Remove to a separate bowl.

7 dates (medjool) Remove seeds from dates and pulse in the food processor until they become a smooth paste (soak the dates in water for 30 minutes beforehand if they are more dried out).

1 tsp. lemon zest ⅛ cup finely chopped candied ginger ⅛ cup shredded coconut ¼ cup hemp hearts

If you’re between the ages of 11 and 15 we invite you to join us on Tuesday, August 2 for a fun excursion into the woods exploring the wonderful world of bushcraft. This one-day workshop will focus on wilderness foraging, navigating, shelter building, and fire making skills. Participants will have a chance to get their hands dirty as they explore Acadia’s Woodland Trails and the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens. It will be a full day of activities in the great outdoors starting at 9am and running until 4:30pm. Workshop fee is $20. PRIDE Max Janes B.Sc, Acadia Pride Coordinator It has been 47 years since the first Pride rally, and in that time Pride has changed phenomenally. On June 28, 1969, local police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York City arresting trans and gay youth and adults on the basis of prostitution. This raid was not the first of its kind, but this particular raid lead to rioting throughout Greenwich Village lead by transgender women, primarily people of colour. This riot began the struggle for LGBT+ rights in the United States and Canada. Later, in 1978, an eight-stripe rainbow flag was designed to represent the pride that LGBT+ individuals had for their community, and to be a symbol that everyone could share. The original colours were pink, red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue, and violet. Each of these colours held meaning to the queer community with themes including spirit, healing, harmony, sexuality, and life. Shortly after however, the original design changed — the pink was removed because there was an unavailability of pink fabric, and the blue and turquoise stripes were amalgamated into the single royal blue colour that we know today.

Add these ingredients, and the already processed nuts and seeds, to the dates in the food processor. Blend until combined. You’ll have a nice paste. Roll them into balls and place in a container. They’ll keep best in the fridge.

Feel free to use this as a base recipe and experiment with all sorts of nuts, seeds, grains (oats work great), dried fruits, and even chocolate chips!

Fast forward to 2016 and we, the LGBT+ community, find ourselves with greater freedom than ever before. At the same time, we experience oppression from many places where judgement based on identity comes nowhere close to being relevant. I am not speaking of marriage rights and custody battles that are widely argued over in popular media. I speak instead of discrimination of visibly "queer" individuals in their attempts to get jobs and maintain them. I speak of the disproportionate rates of homelessness for LGBT+ youth — thrown out of their homes and schools because of who they are. Why all of this hatred and feuding over who a person loves, or who they want to be? This Pride week, I challenge you to ask yourself why this happens. Ask yourself how you can avoid this happening in your life. Non-queer bystanders can help make a situation that could prove violent, be resolved safely for the LGBT+ individual. Outrage from those who are not oppressed is more likely to be listened to than pleas for our own rights. We have come a long way with LGBT+ rights, but we have plenty farther to go — now is not yet the time to rest.

How did you get into building bicycles? Cycling has always been a deeply integrated part of my life. I’ve worked my way through bike shops growing up and have always seen frame building as a master craft. It was only after I had the opportunity to study with master frame builder (Paul Brodie) that things really took off, as I knew I had the skill and desire to keep building.
