SAM WEINSTEIN FEATURE EDITOR and SARA BUTLER ASSOCIATE EDITOR University of San Diego Alum and former News Editor of The Vista, Matt Hose, was Diego Society of Professional Journalists for an article he wrote during his time at USD. Journalists across the nation compete for the SPJ’s prestigious annual awards. This year, the tremendous honor went to Hose, a college student competing among professionals in the real world of journalism. How did all this happen? It started with a meeting Hose had during his sophomore year. As a class assignment, he interviewed a journalist from Voice of San Diego. Two years later, that same journalist recommended him for an internship. Happy to accept, Matt interned at Voice of San Diego during the Fall 2014 semester. In this environment, he was able

to grow his journalistic skills and make valuable connections, which would prove to help him in the future. In fact, his coworkers at Voice of San Diego were the ones who introduced Hose to the San Diego SPJ, encouraging him to submit one of his articles for review. Undecided, Hose mulled over the idea. Then, last March, he was inspired by a “Guerrilla Art” exhibition. Guerrilla art is artistic expression displayed around campus in unusual places and without administrative permission. This collection was a senior thesis of USD student, Jillian Grant. Her exhibition examined the “open wound” created by the US-Mexico border. Unfortunately, her work was taken down and thrown away. Once Matt heard about this news, he knew there was a story to be told. “I heard [the art] was taken down and decided that that was symptomatic of something bigger at USD,” Hose said. “I just had a hunch.” Although Hose’s time as the

News Editor was over, he relied on his investigative journalism skills he learned in USD courses, and voice of this piece. “When I followed [the hunch] and started talking to people about it, I found that the art department wasn’t very happy with their position at USD. The department saw this as a way to make their voices heard.” After following up with the story, he realized that there was a larger issue that USD now had to address. With research and interviews under his belt, Hose produced his article in The Vista. An astounding 379 Facebook likes and 24 Twitter retweets later, the article had become an overwhelming success. A few weeks after the success of his Vista article, Hose decided to submit the article to the San Diego Society of Professional Journalists. This summer, he got the shocking news that he, a recent overall. Hose credits The Vista advisor

President Harris serves the USD community at the ice cream social.

USD welcomes new president SARAH BREWINGTON NEWS EDITOR A new president has started his term as the University of San Diego’s fourth president since the school’s founding in 1949. James T. Harris III, was chosen last semester by the Board of Trustees to succeed Mary Lyons as captain of the ship. Harris comes from Widener University in Pennsylvania. Harris was president at Widener for several years and expected to stay for another 10 years before moving onto other things. However, opportunity knocked when word got out that Lyons, USD’s last president, was planning on stepping down. In an interview with Union Tribune (UT) of San Diego, Harris shared that peer encouragement convinced him to apply for the job. The rest is history. This summer, Harris and his wife moved to USD so he could begin lives on campus in the president’s

home, located just beyond Mother Rosalie Hall. Harris has been at USD for almost a month, and has been interviews. Harris has been busy. The president attended an ice cream social, on Aug. 3, where he served ice cream to the USD community. The president is carrying through with his commitment to be visible. He is ensuring that the USD community sees a president that is willing to engage with the entire campus community. The president will attend many welcome events throughout and the semester will conclude with an inaugural mass on Dec. 3. Following the mass, on Dec. 4, will be the inaugural installation ceremony. As the year progresses, USD alumnae, faculty, staff, students and the San Diego community will be watching to see how President Harris writes a new chapter for USD.
