If you have time for Netflix...

Whether you want to witness a character, enter a new world, see a different side of this one, or simply escape, just one page can trap you.

They are something you might shrink away from, something you only touch for schoolwork, something you haven’t used for fun in a while.

A book. Not a digital one, a paperback book. Something that you would pick out in a store, after combing the rows of hardcovers and paperbacks. It saddens me when people say they hate reading, or that they would prefer to watch a movie rather than read a book. In movies you need little imagination, every detail is there for you on the screen for your eyes to witness.

In a book, you must discern how close the eyes of the protagonist sit in relation to their nose, or how wavy their hair is when the author tells you it resembles an ocean.

In a world where we all claim to be different, to an outsider we look the same. Glued to our phones, stressed out, and overwhelmed. Some might say it is because we do not have time to read. This excuse I have heard many times before, I have even given it myself. But I realized, that if I have time to watch a show few pages in a book. And similar

Just as with TV shows, we can also get wrapped up in a novel, intoxicated by the plot, invested in the characters, and excited by the suspense as we seek the resolution.

But the thing that makes a book better than a show or a movie, is that you have the opportunity to imagine it. Readers have the power to determine what the Iron Throne really looks like in Game of Thrones, rather than what is seen on television.

In a book we can visualize the events unfolding; we can

Someone sat down to record a story, one word turned into a chapter, turned into a book.

Dare to be different, even if that means being a little vintage.

Pick out a book you’ve never read.

It might surprise you. It might seem completely ludicrous, and the last time you read for fun might have been Harry Potter. Beat a story to the theater and pick up the book. you have time to read.

Bartletti explained how he would climb on top of trucks, hold his camera out over moving highways, and crouch down in order to capture the perfect shot.

In the case of Alejandrina, Bartletti observed that she really wanted to be a normal little girl.

“When Alejandrina turned around and looked at this girl in a school uniform, she said ‘I wish I could go to school, I want to be a teacher. I would like to read, but I can’t I know, because if I don’t work my family will starve,’” Bartletti said.

Bartletti’s photos were published with the novel, Enrique’s Journey, which depicts the move of young children immigrating into the United States.

Bartletti, primarily a photojournalist, joked about his struggle with video footage. He explained the copious amounts of patience he needed to capture a shot or video. Bartletti also explained that at times he would not have a lot of time to capture a photo, as he was constantly hiding from the guards. Bartletti

Pulitzer prize winner presented at USD

Bartletti met Alejandrina Castillo, a 12-year-old migrant worker in rural Mexico. Bartletti snapped photos of the workers picking 60 pound bags of produce in exchange for $1.30. It was these photographs that won Bartletti the Pulitzer Prize in 2003.

Currently, Bartletti is a photojournalist for the Los Angeles Times. Bartletti visited the University of San Diego on Monday, Nov. 9 to share his experience as a photojournalist.

Bartletti lectured in the Warren Auditorium about his own journey, telling stories through pictures.

As Bartletti combed through slide after slide of his photography, he narrated what he documented.

He explained that he would have to smuggle himself into homes, past the guards, to get a feel of migrant workers’ lifestyles. wire fences, and muddy rivers for bathing, Bartletti explained that a farm worker’s way of life was the polar opposite of what many Americans are used to.

“Everywhere I went we found children,” Bartletti said.

“Young children, not in school, not studying. But working from sun up to sun down. I focused on one particular girl, Alejandrina.”

Bartletti found Alejandrina and documented her journey, from her hopes of becoming a teacher to her family’s’ move to another part of

“These fences were to keep people out, but to keep people in,” Bartletti said. “Most workers come from indigenous communities and they come under contract.

family as they went to a different part of Mexico in search of more work. After following Alejandra and her family, Bartletti and his partner came back to tell their story.

“First off we put out notices along the bike racks, and we put out what we recommend as a bike lock,” Hansen said. “We found that in most of the cases, where a bike was stolen they used a cable lock, and they were just cut right through. So we recommend a U-lock which is not one hundred percent guaranteed but it helps. We have new bike racks and that has helped a lot.”

Maples added that getting the lock was the main help, but learning how to properly lock the bike was another.

“We showed them how to lock the bike,” Maples said. “I have seen a lot where people just lock around the seat post, and in that case they can just take the seat post off and then take the bike. We want to make it harder for them to take the bike.”

Hansen continued patrol the bike racks as well.

“We also tell our patrol

bike is not secure, we take the bike,” Hansen said. “We have a place where we secure them. Then if a student calls saying, ‘hey my bike has been stolen’ that is the them to prevent [a situation] from somebody else taking it.”

Sophomore Kaleb Goldstein’s bike went missing earlier this year. “ I wasn’t super upset noticed my bike was gone because I had a more valuable bike stolen last year that was cut off a lock,” Goldstein said. “So I was mostly just disappointed in the people that did it and that it would happen again in the same city. I guess I am too naive.”

Goldstein later learned that his second bike had not been stolen.

Goldstein and his friend both learned that P-safe took their bikes.

“However I was very upset when I found out that public safety

took our bikes,” Goldstein said.

“Not only did they not notify us, but they damaged our bikes in the process of moving them to this crudely gated area where dozens of rusted bikes are leaned against each other.

When we

recovered them we noticed my friend’s tank was dented, some of my electrical cables were wrapped around his wheel which would need repair.”

Goldstein admitted that his bike was not properly secured, however he claims that it would have stayed secured if P-safe had not intervened.

Goldstein learned through a student on Facebook that P-safe had most likely taken the bikes.

not collect, Maples and Hansen explained that they are unsure of who takes the bikes. However, they believe that because it is an open campus, the bike thieves could be outsiders. USD’s proximity to Tecolote Canyon, the riverbed, and the trolley stop are all mitigating factors as to who might steal the bikes.

“One thing I hear some students say is that their bike wasn’t worth very much,” Hansen said. “They are surprised anyone would want to take something like that, and to someone that need to transport themselves around San Diego, they don’t care how nice it is, they just want something that works.”

Hansen explained that while

some bike thieves steal on a need basis, others take the more highend bikes to make some cash.

“There is one person who takes it to get around town and the other person who take it [a nicer bike] to sell it and get what it is worth,” Hansen said.

Hansen and Maples explained that any theft report is submitted to the San Diego Police Department. Despite reporting the thefts to SDPD, Hansen explained that the chances of a student getting their bike back are slim to none. The chances only slightly increase when students know the serial number on their bike and can put that in the report.

Maples and Hansen encourage students to record the color, model, serial number, and student information when reporting a stolen bike.

Maples added that he even asks students to take a picture with their bikes. While there is not much that can be done once a bike is stolen, P-safe is implementing measures to help make students aware about the possibility of bike theft. The future new student orientations will contain information about bike thefts, and how to prevent it.

Instagram to Insta-gone Students discuss the turning tides of technology

GIANNA CARAVETTA OPINION EDITOR I fell in love this past weekend.

Not with a physical person standing before me, but with a captivating story about love lost and found. I fell hopelessly in love again with my future husband, desperately praying for him to take notes from the leading man in this love story.

This past week, my friend and I went to the San Diego Asian Film Festival and watched the dramatic Nightmare.” The movie follows a woman’s untimely death, due to a clerical error in heaven, and her opportunity to live another woman’s life for a month. The new life she is given is a life antithetical to her own past. From a successful lawyer to a housewife, the woman this new life with her new family.

I had gone primarily for mesmerized my very being from opening to closing credits. I laughed uncontrollably, my eyes welled up with tears, but, most importantly, my heart ached for my future husband. was almost everything I’ve ever searched or prayed for in my future husband. The career woman-turned-wife would chastise the husband, yell and scream and swear at him, yet he loved her fearlessly nonetheless. He defended her honor, stood up for her at all costs, and gave her a sureit. In the simplest of explanations, he never gave up on her.

I think about my future husband always. I pray for him daily. I write little love letters to him in a journal often. I long to see his face, to be in his embrace, to live life with him. I hope that he might be inspired to live courageously, to exceed these beautiful characteristics the husband in the movie embodied.

In my head, I’ve tied up all The man and the woman fell madly and passionately in love. His family became her reason for living, encompassing her whole heart.

Before the switch, she was content with her previous, independent life. She had no need to consider adding a husband and two children into the mix.

Yet the husband transformed her world, and the children breathed new meaning into her life. got a second chance at living.

SARA BUTLER ASSOCIATE EDITOR @saranicolebb In a world of likes and comments controlled by followers, it seems nearly impossible to break free of social media. However, one millennial did the unthinkable: she quit social media.

Last week, Instagram celebrity Essena O’Neill deleted her account, as well as most of her other online presences, including Snapchat and YouTube. Before deleting everything off her most popular social media platform, O’Neill took to her Instagram account to edit the captions. She changed all of the text to tell the truth behind the photos. Some of her explanations include confessions that she was posing strategically, with her stomach sucked in and her boobs pushed up.

O’Neill is an average 18-year-old Australian teenager.

While she had a fairly typical life she had an astounding online presence attracting over 500,000 followers on Instagram. She had become what many are calling an Instagram celebrity, which usually refers to an individual who becomes seemingly famous through the social media platform.

However, O’Neill’s celebrity status from her social media presence started to eat away at her. According to Cosmopolitan magazine, O’Neill’s online persona ultimately dissolved in the social

“It was refreshing to see someone admit to how fake the presence that people have on social media can be,” Frost said. “With Essena’s campaign to quit social media, I think she has some pretty good messages to get out there, but it isn’t just social media’s fault.”

Recent studies have pointed to signs that increased feelings of insecurity grow with increased usage of social media. One recent study was published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, which has solicited

Senior Eden Frost thought the overall message was positive, although she was skeptical of the

Even though everyone in the sample had Facebook, they preferred using Instagram, most commonly for looking at photos.

While the sample size was small, Frost’s study is an interesting insight on Instagram use among students on our campus. As the most accessed social media platform, it clearly has substantial power over USD student users.

Although O’Neill posted a video declaring her war on social media, some scholars, fellow Insta-celebs, and Toreros are questioning the authenticity of O’Neill’s movement.

Singer-songwriter twins, Rina and Nanda Nelson, who met O’Neill online, posted a video about the controversy.

They claimed that O’Neill’s campaign was a hoax and a cry for more attention. Although it is unclear whether their criticisms are merited, it brings up an important issue: is O’Neill’s use of social media for her campaign against social media ironic?

Senior Chloe Spilotro is studying marketing and communication studies and has considered the irony of her movement.

“As a marketing major,

“As far as us using social media, as long as you aren’t doing one-tenth of what O’Neill is doing on social media, you’re doing alright,” Spilotro said.

O’Neill’s story provides powerful insight on how deeply ingrained social media is in millennial lives. It plays such a critical role in falsely shaping our sense of self and world view. We can’t be naive and completely escape social media in our globalized environment that evolves around emergent new technology, but we can be mindful and make some changes.

Jamie Eddy FEATURE EDITOR I’m going out on a limb this week about a recent date I went on. Let me just start by saying, it was awesome.

Turns out, dating is not dead. For those of you who think guys don’t want to take girls on dates, cook dinner together, and simply hang out and talk, you are very much mistaken. However, if I’ve learned anything from dating and trying to get someone’s attention, it is to just go for it. You will never know unless you try.

Ethan*, a tall, well dressed, brunette, immediately caught my eye. Oh, and he was wearing high top, old skool vans. For those of you who know me, good sneakers are a major plus. He was perfectly stacking green apples in Trader Joe’s while I was trying and knock over his hard work.

I’m going to refrain from heavy detail, but we conversed for a bit, introduced ourselves, made strange but refreshingly clever fruit related remarks, and Ethan and I exchanged a few text messages over the next couple of days. One day while stepping off the tram, he called me. I am an advocate for phone calls, especially when it comes to dating. You have less time to think of something ‘cute’ to say and more time to be quick witted, humorous, and gauge how the other person is thinking.

The following Thursday he invited me to make dinner at his house. I was apprehensive home, but I made sure to tell my roommates where I was going and that I would send an ‘I’m alive and thriving’ text.

We made homemade guacamole, sautéed a variety of vegetables, he made chicken while I whipped up some tofu, and since both of us are over 21, we cracked open a couple beers.

The conversation was easy, comfortable, humorous, and light.

I grew more curious about him as the dialogue continued and we both were genuinely interested in what the other person had to say.

After a few hours of hanging out, I told him I had to get some shuteye. We did that slightly awkward hug goodbye unsure about whether to kiss one another and ended up sticking with the hug.

Overall, the date was a success. No matter what, our age group is meant to date, experiment,

Good news Toreros: DIRECTV is coming to the Jenny Craig Pavilion gym. We can expect these changes to be made by the beginning of Thanksgiving break courtesy of Associated Students and Athletic Facility Operations.

Television has become a leisurely activity among many peoples’ lives and has been successfully integrated into other aspects of our daily routines to provide both entertainment and news.

College can be a very hectic time for students. Since time is so limited, we often multitask to enhance our productivity.

University of San Diego’s Jenny Craig Fitness Center is a popular spot on campus that has entertainment. Recently, USD’s contract with our television provider, Cox Communication, expired and left the gym

center, sophomore Sal Schaner expressed his concern that this effectiveness of his workouts.

“Not having access to SportsCenter in the gym forced me to shorten my workouts so I could get back to my room to keep updated on the games,” Schaner said. “I’ll be excited to have this great amenity back in the gym soon.”

JCP placed signs on each of the televisions stating, “Fitness Center Users: USD has terminated their contract with Cox, so there is no longer a campus TV feed.

This may change in the future, but for now we are working on a different solution. Thank you for your patience, and we apologize for the inconvenience.”

The termination of these amenities that our provided, did not go unnoticed.

expressed frustration with this abrupt change and felt something inconvenience. Our university community accommodates for the needs of the students to make our time here an enjoyable and meaningful learning experience. a smaller university is the ability of students to make systemic change on campus.

Associated Students acts as the liaison between students and the administration on campus to interpret student desires and provide for the needs of the community from our perspective.

AS President Katie Coutermarsh actively understands the needs of all students and is the leading voice for undergraduate concerns. When she heard about the complaints coming from students regarding the lack of programming content on campus, Katie and other AS representatives took action and reached out to the Facilities Management in the Athletic Department to see what measures were being taken to address the problem.

The Athletic Department oversees the operations of all facilities and was previously informed of the growing inconvenience at the gym. While frustrations were high with the lack of programming on the screens, USD’s administration and facilities management does a lot of unseen work that in turn makes our campus a special place to call home.

In an email response to Coutermarsh, Branda Cook, the Assistant Director of Athletics Facilities and Operations, reported on the issue.

“We are aware of the complaints and have been working toward a solution,” Cook said. “The good news is

being installed by the end of next week and DIRECTV is being installed starting tomorrow.”

It is encouraging to know faculty and administration on campus understand the needs of students and are addressing issues promptly to make our campus experience productive and rewarding.

Budgeting for campus as the university tries to balance meeting the demands of students with the allocation of funds provided to meet those needs. A campus-wide budget adjustment from last year came in the form of dropping the cable television provider contract for programming in the residential halls to update the Wi-Fi for better capability. Many students were unaware of this change but understood the transition who utilize their computers for more and more each day.

After the frenzy about the cable subscription in residential halls subsided, students found alternative ways to obtain information via online streaming and other campus television outlets. Frank’s Lounge, Student Living Pavilion, Olin Hall, and common areas in residential halls are still functioning.

“Many TV’s are still up and running, because a new subscription was made with DIRECTV for certain areas,” Coutermarsh said.

Associated Students and USD administration play an integral part in making important changes based on input they receive from the students. The DIRECTV contract is just one example of frustrations being voiced and USD students should expect cable soon.

What is up in North Park

North Park is an inland neighborhood of San Diego boasting an eclectic, entertaining, and diverse demographic of people and places to visit. This particular neighborhood resembles parts of the Mission District in San Francisco, offering a variety of restaurants, eateries, record stores, live music joints, brunch spots, family friendly parks, community centers, and a wide variety of shopping.

Brunch is a sacred morning ritual for many North Parkers, especially when the weekend rolls around. Although there are countless breakfast cafĂŠs and diners in the area, many locals swear by Urban Solace, located

between 30th street and University Avenue.

This particular restaurant is open the majority of the day and includes vegetarian, gluten free, and vegan options, appealing to a wide-ranging customer base. In addition, they have a great happy hour throughout the week and into the weekend, including their famous bottomless mimosas.

One of the great characteristics of North Park that is not as commonly found in other parts of San Diego is the abundance of vinyl havens, second-hand, thrift, and vintage consignment stores.

A few of the top rated shops and vinyl record stores according to Yelp, include Frock You, Hunt & Gather, Bad Madge Boutique, Red Brontosaurus Records,

United Records and Sounds, and Off The Record. Each of these stores presents an assorted array of unique, one-of-a-kind records, CDs, clothing, accessories, and shoes. Part of the thrill comes

through often large quantities of items. Unlike department and large electronic stores, items are not as carefully sorted. This forces shoppers to dig for the good stuff.

North Park does a great job of opening up restaurants and bars, drinking preferences. For instance, for students that are 21+, there are various wine bistros. Splash Wine Lounge and Bistro is one of the best wine caterers in the neighborhood, with over 100 wines available by the bottle or simply for tasting.

Similarly to wine, beer and

breweries are often associated with North Park. Some of the top rated breweries for 21+ in the area include: Mike Hess Brewing, Thorn St. Brewery, Modern Times Tasting Room, The Homebrewer, and Belching Beaver North Park.

Each of these places gives people a rare beer tasting experience unlike any other. Although they are all places to drink and enjoy craft beer, the taste, feel, and aesthetic of each venue differs.

One of the perks of living inland in San Diego, is the plentiful number of parks and community centers in the area, compared to more coastal competitors. North Park is attractive to many families because of the quality of schools and availability of open space for kids and pets.

Some of the parks and

recreational facilities include: Bird Park, North Park Community Center, Morley Field Sports Complex, Morley Field dog park, Palm Canyon, and the famous Balboa Park. There are countless others and each brings a sense of solidarity, safety, and collectiveness to the area.

North Park is just a quick 15-minute drive from USD. The neighborhood is a great place to hang out with friends, listen to music, try out different breweries and eateries, and get some studying done in a cool coffee shop. No matter what, it is always important to try out new neighborhoods in San Diego, especially since many USD students may only live in the area during their college careers.

Best of North Park Music Arguably the most prominent and attractive aspect of North Park is the music scene. The Observatory at North Park, located at the corner of University Avenue and 29th Street, is a famous live music venue that vocalists. The building has been around since the late 1930s and used to be an old theatre. Although it has been slightly refurbished, the 30s and 40s vibe is still very present.

Over Fall Break, some University of San Diego students attended the San Francisco Torero Trek offered through Career Services. The group consisted of nine undergraduates and Lauren Payne, a Career Services professional.

One of the incentives of this particular program was that all finances were taken care of by USD. The only expenses paid out of pocket were for the flights, which were reasonable. Career Services also provided financial aid coverage for food and airfare costs in specific cases.

On Friday, Oct. 23 the Trek started off by taking a cable car to the William Sonoma office, where students met with five USD alumni who currently work for the company. Each alumnus has held a variety of positions at the company.

They all began by describing their post-graduate employment and then went into current job titles and individual responsibilities. In addition, the group received a surprise visit from the company’s vice president. The representatives allowed ample time for questions and even showed off the beautiful William Sonoma kitchen.

Senior Olivia Corea, communication studies major, was happy to participate in the Torero Trek. While the companies offered were not necessarily her most ideal post-graduate employment options, she saw this as a positive element.

“The Trek was a valuable experience that allowed students and myself to gain exposure to companies and more specific specialized areas that we may not have had the opportunity to see or experience otherwise,” Corea said.

The second stop on the Torero journey was lunch at Wayfare Tavern Restaurant, hosted by EJ Gallo Winery. Students were ushered into a private dining room where an EJ Gallo representative informed them about the company while enjoying a three-course meal, and for those who were 21, some delicious wine.

Senior William Stump, finance major, discussed company culture, diverse corporate perspectives, and insightful knowledge from professions regarding post-graduate employment.

“The Trek was a great opportunity to see some of the differences in the cultures and mission statements of three incredibly different and respectable companies,” Stump said. “It was a wonderful opportunity to see an inside perspective on prestigious companies and meet with intelligent, kind professionals. If I wasn't graduating I would definitely go again, with different companies of course.”

Next up was visiting Method Products. The guide at this destination was also a USD alumnus, excited to work with young adults from his alma mater. He discussed in detail company background and history, as well as included the latest details about Method’s new soap factory in Chicago.

This new factory has created many jobs in an underprivileged area, hoping to boost employment rates and income in lower working class homes. In addition, the group of undergraduates learned about Method’s close-knit work culture and were more than willing to give students a tour of where their chemists make the products.

After this final company visit, students had over an hour to kill before the informal mixer with more USD alumni who also currently work in San Francisco. During the break, a few students walked to Pier 39, enjoying some shopping, sight-seeing, and sangria for 21-year-olds.

Senior Stephanie Leiva, finance and supply chain management major, noted that the close knit, small group interactions were beneficial.

“I thought the Trek was insightful and well planned out,” Leiva said. “The intimacy with these companies really enhanced my perception of the company culture and its employees.”

Next on the Trek was the mixer, which began at 6 p.m. in a private room at Credo Restaurant. There were over 20 alumni in attendance, who work at local companies and offered helpful career advice. Some of the companies that were not represented on the trip but were still in attendance at the mixer included alumni from major tech companies, such as Google and Facebook.

In addition to students gaining insight into large company and corporation career options, undergraduates expressed excitement over bonding and getting to know more peers whom many did not know prior to the Torero Trek.

Overall, the students in attendance agreed that it was a worthwhile way to spend Fall Break. They made many promising professional contacts, received business cards, scored email addresses, and established new relationships with peers.

TAYLER REVIERE VERNINAS ARTS & CULTURE EDITOR It is November people. I am more than halfway done with my third semester of college and only a semester away from being halfway done with my college career. Finals are about a month away and Thanksgiving is LITERALLY around the corner.

Just yesterday I found myself listening to Michael Buble’s Christmas album on Spotify to get into the holiday spirit.

What holiday spirit?!

Thanksgiving has not even happened yet and I am already singing “I’ll Be Home For Christmas.” All of this talk about upcoming events has me anticipating the future with excitement. Yet, I sometimes forget that life is also happening right now and if I am not enjoying it then what makes me think I will be enjoying it in the future?

When all the chaos of life piles up, I fail to remember the importance of where I am in the exact moment. Thoughts of upcoming tests, assignments, on-campus events, and deadlines consume my brain and cloud my thinking process of being present in the now.

It is also hard when the media and big corporations are promoting the beginning of the holiday season and the talk of ‘early-bird’ sales is already trending in advertisements.

We can’t help but already start thinking about Christmas music because the outlets we use to stream any kind of news already contains these holiday images.

I am just one of those people who gets extremely overwhelmed when so much is scheduled to occur within the upcoming weeks that I start to stress out that life is going by too fast. And when life feels like it is going way too quickly, being overwhelmed by future events does not help that level of stress.

In retrospect I guess the real challenge is to live in the present moment. Yeah, easier said than done. For some of us that present moment schpiel is complete BS. But if we really take a step back to examine life as it is presently occurring, we might actually realize life would not go by so fast if we did not constantly ponder about the future.

Yes, it is great to look forward to the future. But most of the time it is even better when we are focusing on what is going on right now. Right now we are breathing and we are living. You don’t want to just survive throughout life, but you want to thrive: so thrive by being in the present moment with yourself or others.

So whether it is Thursday or Thanksgiving or Christmas day, just remember to be in the now.

It may be a hard knock life sometimes, but for those San Diegans who had the opportunity to watch the production of ANNIE, life was anything but hard.

From Nov. 3-8, the San Diego Civic Theatre brought to life the U.S. National Tour of ANNIE. This incarnation of the Tony Award-winning original was directed for the 19th time

by Martin Charnin. It was an experience that many parents brought their young children to witness the touching story behind a musical they too probably saw as a young kid.

Sophomore Miranda ANNIE in elementary school and later became a stage manager for the production during her high school years, was in attendance at the SD Civic

The young cast of ANNIE performed the classic song ‘It’s the Hard Knock Life” on stage. while singing hit scores such as “Maybe” and “It’s the Hard Knock Life”. The audience was completely captivated by the amazing acting and singing talents of each character.

“It really just revitalized my passion for the arts and theater. It was great to see the San Diego community come together to appreciate the arts, - Miranda Maher Center to watch it once again.

classic production.”

The original production of ANNIE opened April 21, 1977 and went on to win seven Tony Awards. This new production that performed at the SD Civic Theatre featured a 25 member company with Issie Swickle, the 10-yearold actress who played the main role of Annie. Swickle and the six other orphans showcased their awe-inspiring vocal talents

The storyline follows a young, orphan girl who has been stuck in an orphanage since birth. At 11 years old she is and with the locket they left her, she refuses to lose hope that they are still in search of her.

When a billionaire, Oliver Warbucks, played by Gilgamesh Taggett, takes Annie into his home he fosters a loving relationship with the young orphan and wants to adopt her.

However, when Annie explains her situation about her lost parents still looking for her, Warbucks releases a $500,000 reward for Annie’s parents. After much

deception and greed, the young orphan is told that her parents died years ago. Although it is unfortunate situation, she and the other orphans are taken into the caring arms of Oliver Warbucks.

For these young girls, the sun really does come out tomorrow.

Maher commented on the admirable acting skills from each of the cast members.

“The acting was very impressive especially from the young girls who played the orphans,” Maher said. “They have the nation to entertain thousands, which is a pretty crazy lifestyle.”

Lynn Andrews played the role of Miss Hannigan, the hated orphan caretaker who despises the young children she watches over. Andrews’ phenomenal

vocalized exceptionally well and Andrews brought the character of Miss Hannigan to life with her exuberant personality.

There was even an appearance from Sunny, a fouryear-old rescue terrier mix, who played the role of Sandy, the dog that Annie befriends while exploring the streets of New York.

Maher was excited when she witnessed a real dog on stage.

“I wish they would have utilized the dog more because in previous productions I felt as if he made more of an appearance,” Maher said. “I was waiting for him to appear more often especially because the dog seemed so well trained!”

BlackBerry likely comeback DIEGO LUNA BUSINESS EDITOR @diegotothemoon The Canadian-based company BlackBerry announced ever the

Android smartphone, BlackBerry Priv.

The word Priv is short for privacy, according to BlackBerry CEO John Chen.

The phone’s name revolves around its built-in security app. This means there is no need to download and install pricey security apps from the Google Play Store.

Personally, I believe this can be a major selling point to boost BlackBerry’s sales but most importantly to improve perceived customer value.

When BlackBerry began entering its declining stage in the product life cycle I didn’t think a comeback was possible.

BlackBerry has been silent for some time and is now trying to rebuild its once dominating image.

BlackBerry is trying to compete with the rival tech giants Apple and Samsung. Apple and Samsung currently claim up to 66 percent of the smartphone market.

A lot of students have become glued to their phones, myself included, but I wonder if a new Android phone will increase BlackBerry’s low sales.

As a previous owner of an Android phone, I can say that game in comparison to the iPhone.

However, Apple only has one model, the iPhone, which only has a few variations in its product line.

In contrast, Android has over 15 models to choose from.

The choices are overwhelming and the differences are not substantial, especially when the average smartphone becomes obsolete in six months or less.

If the BlackBerry Priv to bounce back after years of decline, mediocre hardware, software, and near collapse.

BlackBerry usually have a physical QWERTY keyboard.

The Blackberry Priv is a smartphone that combines a sliding keyboard with a touchscreen.

This is how they plan to position themselves in a market where the touchscreen is dominant.

Earlier in October, BlackBerry announced some of their phone’s additional specs.

The Priv also has a curved screen, much like Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge.

However, despite this similarity, the Priv is an Android touchscreen phone that’s unmistakably a BlackBerry.

Although BlackBerry only announced a few of the phone’s new specs, I doubt it will make a big difference in a market where less than 33 percent market share is available.

Entrepreneurs: the USD sharktank is here As the V2 competition approaches, students prepare their pitches

DIEGO LUNA BUSINESS EDITOR @diegotothemoon The School of Business Administration hosts a variety of professional organizations for student involvement, providing many students with opportunities for academic, personal, and professional development.

The University of San Diego strives to foster an environment where students can contribute effectively and ethically to society and the organizations students are involved with.

There are many student organizations on campus, one of them is the Entrepreneurship Club, or E-club for short. On Thursday, Nov. 5, the E-club hosted a pitch lab workshop.

The workshop intended to show students and aspiring entrepreneurs how to pitch an idea that will attract strategic suppliers, investors, and potential business partners.

The pitch lab covered a variety of topics which included testing competitive advantage, how to create value, and operational strategies, among others.

All in all, this workshop aimed to help guide and inspire students who are seeking to make change.

E-club’s mission is to inspire, encourage, and develop the entrepreneurial spirit within students attending USD, the San Diego regional universities, and our international neighbors.

One of the ways the E-club promotes growth within the USD community is by hosting the V2 Pitch Competition.

Many industry professionals have made their own dreams a reality and turned their ideas into lucrative empires.

USD creates opportunities and offers support in more ways than one. The pitch lab workshop and the V2 competition are just the tip of the iceberg.

Many students are unaware that USD has free legal clinics that give consultation services to students.

The clinics help evaluate your case involving entrepreneurship, federal tax, immigration, and many

undergraduate alum in Computer Science and current graduate student in the Hahn School of Nursing’s Health Care Informatics program.

V2, which stands for venture vetting, is a campus-wide entrepreneurship competition where the venture and the entrepreneur are vetted, meaning accuracy by potential investors.

Some students have called this event the USD Shark Tank Competition A panel of three angel investors evaluate the pitches seven minute pitch with all three investors and a 10-minute one-onone meeting with each investor.

The grand prize can be up to $50,000. The investors decide how much of the $50,000 to Contrary to popular belief, the V2 competition is not exclusive to business majors. In fact, as long as you’re a student of USD, you may enter the competition.

Chipotle prompts turmoil amongst students Recent E. coli breakout causes students to reconsider visiting the restaurant

HENLEY DOHERTY ASST. BUSINESS EDITOR @ralphlaurhen There are a lot of great restaurant and fast food options students have to choose from near the University of San Diego. Chipotle is one of the most popular places for students to get a quick meal, but for now, many students are rethinking making a visit to this restaurant.

According to the New York Times, Chipotle has so far temporarily closed 43 restaurants in both Washington and Oregon due to a recent E. coli contamination. During the month of October, there have been over 40 cases of E. coli traced back to Chipotle between these two states. The World Health Organization was impressed when Chipotle took extra precautions to close more stores than were effected by the contamination.

The outbreak of E. coli in Washington and Oregon has progressively deterred people from going to the restaurant chain around the country, affecting the company’s large-scale sales.

Chipotle is currently in the process of assessing the situation regarding the source of contamination of the bacteria. It has so far been reported by the company that contaminated produce is most likely to blame for the bacterial outbreak, although the source of the produce has yet to be disclosed.

Despite this recent outbreak in nearby states Washington and Oregon, sophomore Jullisa Romani is still planning on regularly eating at Chipotle here in California.

However, junior Alexa Layne voiced a different view about going to the restaurant chain due to the recent E. coli outbreak.

Senior Maxine Velez is similarly thinking twice before visiting a Chipotle location anytime soon.

“Well yes, I’m actually really disappointed because Chipotle was my go-to healthy fast food choice, but now due to the outbreak, instead of causing obesity and cancer like true fast food places like McDonald’s it will send me straight to the hospital within hours of eating the damn burrito,” Velez said.

While there are mixed feelings amongst students regarding whether they will continue eating at Chipotle in the coming weeks, the company has already been experiencing a marked hit to its sales nationwide.

MATTHEW ROBERSON SPORTS EDITOR @mroberson22 Well, it’s been 13 days and I still feel lost. What used to be an almost daily routine has become a thing of the past, coming to an abrupt ending right before Halloween. I’m referring to the death of the sports and pop culture website Grantland, which was recently shut down by the higherups at its parent company, ESPN. In my opinion, Grantland was the best collection of talented, opinionated, and witty writers anywhere on the internet.

Its creation by Bill Simmons, the self-professed “Sports Guy,” whose conversational style of writing gave a voice to snarky sports fans everywhere, signaled a shift in the entire culture of sports writing. By merging the worlds of sports and pop culture into one website, Simmons developed a one-stop shop for everything that was ever happening on your television.

Grantland didn’t break any news. Instead, they stayed in their lane. The writers at Grantland did exactly what we do as fans of sports and entertainment.

Watch the event, laugh about it, sometimes cry or whine about it, and then share your thoughts about it with everyone. If that seems way too simple to actually work, it’s because it was. But for its glorious four years of existence, Grantland was my little slice of sports nerd heaven.

I remember when I was introduced to Grantland as a junior in high school. My AP History class provided netbooks for all the students to take notes on. Except rather than taking notes, I was that kid in the back scouring the web. One day on the ESPN web homepage they debuted the link to Grantland, and immediately I was hooked.

It wasn’t just the brilliance of their ace NBA and MLB writers, Zach Lowe and Jonah Keri, that kept me coming back.

The entire writing staff made Grantland so enjoyable to read.

Even the non-sports material appealed to me. From Rembert Browne’s stories about

The leaves have browned and fallen, the trick-or-treating has concluded, and there’s a noticeable chill in the air. While this may signal a hiatus to San Diego’s seemingly-eternal summer, sports fans can rejoice in the fact that colder weather also brings the return of University of San Diego’s hardwood heroes.

This Friday, the school’s men’s basketball team will hours north against the University of Southern California Trojans.

Senior Jito Kok spoke about his team’s preparation for the game against USC. “I think it’s good for us,” Kok said. “We can both get a real feel for where we are at as a team as well as let the rest of the world know what we are about.

We want to show what we’ve got, and we have a good opportunity for that right out of the gate.”

The game will mark the beginning of noted alum and new head coach Lamont Smith’s career at the helm of the Toreros. Smith replaces former coach Bill Grier, whose eight seasons included a trip to the NCAA tournament in 2008, but few other noteworthy successes.

The 1998 USD graduate will have a tall task in front of him. At 39 years old, Smith is relatively young compared to 70-year-old Steve Fisher of San Diego State or 68-year-old Mike Krzyzewski at Duke. It is only appropriate that his team will carry just four upperclassmen in 2015-16.

Kok, a shot blocking machine, should anchor the defense from the post, while fourth-year guard Duda Sanadze will likely be looked to as a much-needed scoring threat after averaging 6.6 points per game last season. Juniors Brett Bailey and Brandon Perry will also

need to provide leadership in the frontcourt for the Toreros.

Outside of those four, USD will count on a squad of babyfaced ballers to take big steps forward in order to stay relevant in the increasingly-competitive West Coast Conference.

After graduating the program’s all-time leaders in points (Johnny Dee) and assists (Chris Anderson), sophomores Marcus Harris, Khalil BedartGhani and Vasa Pusica will be hole in the backcourt. Kok discussed his feelings on the team’s fresh scoring options.

“I think we have a lot of potential with this team,” Kok said. “There are a lot of talented young guys that work very hard.

I don’t see Johnny and Chris’ graduation as a loss of scoring but more of an opportunity for others to create and get more shots. We’ll Look for freshman Olin Carter III to have an impact on offense as well. Described by who plays with an extraordinary level of skill, Carter will look to build on his noted high school scoring exploits.

Meanwhile, freshman power forward Alex Floresca is expected

to compete for playing time after an All-State senior season at Webster High in Missouri.

If the Toreros’ opening game was any indication, the team might be well ahead of the curve already. Granted, it was only an exhibition against the Cal Tech Beavers, a lowly Division III foe, but the Toreros showcased eye-popping potential that could make this campaign far more than just a rebuilding season.

All 12 players who suited up scored at least four points in the blowout 95-42 victory, with Olin Carter III’s 13 points and Marcus Harris’ 12 points leading the way on offense. Kok enjoyed a personal block party by rejecting eight Beaver shots, and Vasa Pusica showed strong defensive instincts after coming up with With Dee’s departure leaving the team without a true no. 1 scoring option, that kind of all-around effort will be needed throughout the season for the Toreros to have success.

The team will face a smattering of non-conference opponents early in the season.

Trips to play the Western Michigan Broncos and Cal State Fullerton Titans will be followed by a voyage to Anchorage for the

GCI Great Alaska Shootout.

The schedule really gets interesting in its second month.

An outdoor game against local powerhouse San Diego State on Dec. 5 is sure to bring a sizeable crowd to Petco Park, which will game. Kok insists that the change of environment won’t have any sort of crippling effects on the team’s style of play.

“I think every basketball player has played outside before and that’s never really been an issue,” Kok said. “I don’t really focus on where the game is but [rather] who we are playing, and how we are going to beat them.

West Coast Conference play will bring the likes of NCAA tournament regulars like the Gonzaga Bulldogs, St. Mary’s Gaels, and Brigham Young University Cougars to the Jenny Craig Pavilion. All three of those pesky conference rivals should provide stiff tests for Lamont Smith’s squad.

Ultimately, while there may be some growing pains for the young Toreros team, the 2015-16 season looks to be a strong preview of the program’s immediate future and good preparation for conference title runs down the road.

Obama, or traveling to Ferguson after the Mike Brown incident, to on the girls from Broad City, everything on Grantland was just so much damn fun. It seemed like the place where the cool kids worked.

And while the site itself, and my dreams of working there, are now dead, the writing lessons I learned by reading it will stay with me throughout my career.

Hosted at the University of California Los Angeles, the University of San Diego men’s tennis team traveled to the SoCal Intercollegiate Championship Tournament over Halloween weekend. The Toreros were represented by junior Joshua Page, sophomore James Ponwith and freshman Pratt Keerasuntonpong.

Our Toreros had a relatively good start to the tournament, with Page and Ponwith making bracket of the tournament with some challenging play. Ponwith and Keerasuntonpong also teamed up in doubles play and the qualifying bracket.

Page defeated sophomore Cody Rakela of the UC Santa main singles draw with a 7-6, 6-2 score, then fell to freshman Logan Smith 6-3, 6-4 of the University of Southern California round main singles draw match against USCB’s junior Morgan Mays 6-3, 7-5, then in the later bracket he pulled ahead defeating sophomore Man Hon Ko 7-6, 6-1 of the Concordia Eagles.

Keerasuntonpong also 6-7, 10-5 to sophomore Jamie Thorp of the Loyola Marymount University Lions, but had a big win over freshman Richard Han 7-5, 6-3 of the UC San Diego Tridents in the consolation bracket.

Page believed that although the tournament was decent the team was not quite at their peak playing performance.

“We all didn’t do that great in singles,” Page said. “[Ponwith and Keerasuntonpong] actually did quite well in doubles. They

guys and ended up doing rather decently.”

The doubles matchup of Ponwith and Keerasuntonpong had a strong opening in the qualifying round against the highly ranked Cal Poly Mustangs, defeating freshman Aiku Shintani and junior Timothy Tan 8-7. In their main draw match against UCSB’s junior Morgan Mays and senior Andrew Riminton, Ponwith and Keerasuntonpong were upset 8-4.

Page believes doubles was tough in this tournament, especially with the NCAA changing matchplay rules to one set of eight games with sudden death deuce. With the matchplay rules making the game even shorter, Page doesn’t think the doubles game will be the same.

“In the regular season it’s only one set of six games now,” Page said. “It’s tough in doubles especially now the season matches are being made to by played only to six. So if you just play one bad game or something that’s it. Doubles is going to be really fast. Most people love to watch doubles because it’s so action packed. It’s not going to make a real difference between six or eight games, and now

it’s going to be like 20 minute matches.”

The coaches have really been stressing doubles play in practices lately. Page knows that the recent wins and great playing from the UCLA tournament will be a real moral booster for the whole team heading into the regular season.

“The guys doing well in doubles was a real positive,” Page said. “Our coaches have been really drilling us to get better on the doubles court: working better as a team, playing certain passages of play on the big points. They won a match 8-7, they were able to put them into play really well. They [Ponwith and Keerasuntonpong] were able to get through a match where on paper they weren’t meant to win.”

In regards to his singles play, Page saw a few opportunities opponent but never took them. It wasn’t until the second set that he stepped his game up.

“He had had a close match against our No. 3 last year,” Page said. “I thought it was going to games on sudden death deuce. It was one of those things where I

set but never took them. Then in the second set I actually won those points and it was a little bit easier and a good win.”

Page then took on freshman Logan Smith from the Uuniversity of Southern California and felt they weren’t playing at their highest level. The weather conditions had gotten more intense as the wind and sun became a factor. Both of them could not get psyched up through the whole match.

“The match never really got going,” Page said. “It was just a bad match from both of us. I could’ve won. It went to a lot of sudden death deuce points. I’m not one to say that I played badly when I lose, but we both were kind of laughing after the match about how bad the level [of play] was.”

Looking forward in the season, Page is excited with the direction the team is heading and has already noticed how far they have come since the beginning of fall conditioning.

“We have such a mixture of training that we do,” Page said.

“We do a lot of conditioning.

Our usual Monday, Wednesday, Friday we do morning workouts, then practice from 1-3 p.m. Then

on Tuesdays and Thursday we [practice] with three hours of cardio afterwards. It is hard work and our coach is really tough, he’s massive about being physically

Page can sense the difference in everyone’s level of play and likes the mentality of the team this year. The boys are generally at the same level of skills and are in a position to have a great lineup. He believes the team can do really well. As long as they’re playing, each man is working just as hard as the next to contribute to the team’s overall win.

“We’re progressing a lot,” Page said. “We all think this is our year. This year we have a real team where we could make top 10 in the nation, we’re strong enough to be there. We’ve got kind of an older team and top 16 at least is our goal. We’ve haven’t really been up there, like USC, in a long time and this year we’re hopefully looking at beating those top 10 teams we lost to last year.”

The team next heads to New York, N.Y. for the ITA National Indoor Championship on Nov. 12.

While the offense could not breach the Tigers’ defensive fortress, goalkeeper Craft protected her home net with

When Torero fans arrived for excitement ensued. The second

back, Manfredonia scored another goal for the team at 61:21, with an assist by Sherwood.

With two goals on the board, the Tigers began to feel the bitter taste of defeat. In the end, our Torero women won by passionate cheers from the crowd.

Despite a rough season, the soccer is certainly a cause for celebration.

Craft shares her thoughts on the victory, as well as her feelings Torero.

“It was great to end my USD career with two shutouts,” Craft said. “Obviously this season did

not go as well as planned but it was still nice to end on a happier note. [...] That’s the feeling that I will take with me and remember for the rest of my life.”

With Craft graduating in the spring, the Toreros will need to rebuild their lineup to prepare for next year.

Anthony Lawrence: SD local living the college dream at USD

MATTHEW ROBERSON SPORTS EDITOR @mroberson22 The role of starting quarterback is one of the most visible in all of sports. On every play the quarterback handles the ball, making him arguably the most important player on the as a young player can be very daunting. Often times young quarterbacks are hindered by conservative play calls aimed at protecting them, or by their own nervousness that naturally comes with playing in the spotlight.

Anthony Lawrence is not one of these quarterbacks. The redshirt freshman came to the University of San Diego after an outstanding high school career that saw him accumulate over 9,000 passing yards and 96 touchdowns.

He holds CIF records for the San Diego section in career passing yards, passes completed, and touchdown passes. A product of Grossmont High School in El Cajon, the young quarterback has continued his success into his collegiate career.

It was a career which started with uncertainty over whether he would even be the starting quarterback for the Toreros.

Despite the presence of senior Trey Wheeler and graduate transfer Chris Willson on the quarterback depth chart coming into the season, Lawrence had the belief that he could prove himself as the best of the bunch.

While acknowledging that he didn’t know for sure whether he would win the job, Lawrence knew that he could do something special if handed the reins to

USD’s offense.

“I didn’t know for sure [if I would start],” Lawrence said. “I just wanted to compete and work as hard as I can, make the best of wanted to come out and show that I was the best quarterback. To eventually start was basically my goal coming in.”

Not only was he able to meet this goal, he has exceeded

“It’s really good to know that the hard work has paid off for the team,” Lawrence said. “Everyone just comes in and works hard.

Hopefully if everything falls our way, [we can] win the PFL. I want to win a game in the playoffs.

That would be really exciting for the team.”

Lost in all the hype surrounding his football achievements is the fact that Lawrence is still a student here at USD just like everyone else. In his free time he enjoys going to the beach and watching the NFL on Sunday. He cites quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning, who shares his number players to watch. Lawrence provided us with a perspective on his college experience at USD. “It’s a good time being with your friends, and a bunch of people I know live up in the Vistas [with me],” Lawrence said. “So you can walk like a minute and see your friends and hang out. I watch the NFL a bunch. It’s fun to watch what they do and how good they are, and how quick they see everything.”

As a local kid from San Diego county, Lawrence is living his dream. Not only does he get to play quarterback for one of Southern California’s most prestigious universities, but he also gets to share the experience of being a student at our beautiful, one of a kind campus. Oddly enough, Lawrence entertained the idea of leaving the only region he ever knew for the cold and gray of America’s northeast.

“I was looking at Ivy Leagues a little bit, but you can’t really beat San Diego,” Lawrence did come after me the hardest.

Staying close to home is nice so my family can watch me play.”

When you look past the high school passing records and his

virtually instant success leading Anthony Lawrence is not so different than the average college student.

His decision to come here was based largely on staying close to home, something hundreds of us can relate to. He lives in a cramped dorm room with three other people, where he spends the weekends going to the beach and tuning into the best NFL games of the week.

He has acquired the college nickname formed by

The only thing that separates him is that between those trips to the beach and long hours on the couch, he goes and throws touchdowns at Torero Stadium.
