USD remembers San Diego Bishop Cirilo Flores

11, 2001 as well as remember the recent passing of a spiritual for Catholics in San Diego and at University of San Diego, passed away Saturday from prostate cancer.

Flores has been continuously supportive of USD throughout the years, attending important events at the Immaculata with those involved in our community. Flores suffered a stroke four days before Easter, April 17, at which time he was found to have an aggressive form of prostate cancer. After attacking the bishop’s bones, the cancer left him too weak to undergo chemotherapy, leading to his passing at Nazareth House in San Diego at 2:47 p.m.

Flores began his studies at Loyola Marymount University,

where he spent a year in a seminary followed by a path to pursue education. He later attended Stanford Law School, after which he practiced law for 10 years. His real interest in holy orders came later, following the funeral of one of his close friends.

There, he was asked why he had not yet embraced holy orders, leaving him compelled to change his path and pursue spirituality and religion.

In 1986, Flores entered St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo, leading him into the Catholic holy order. In 1991, he became ordained as a priest in the Diocese of Orange, where he served as a priest for 10 years. In 2009, he became an auxiliary bishop, and in 2012, he was appointed coadjutor bishop of San Diego.

Dr. Barón leaves USD to continue his legacy of care

By Gwyneth Shoecraft NEWS EDITOR @gshoecraft Imagine this scenario: You step into an empty elevator, the doors shut and you are alone. You quickly snap a picture of yourself, and carefully save it to your iCloud account. The doors open and you step out of the elevator.

That short elevator ride occurs in what we consider complete privacy. There are few places in public where we feel afforded some privacy; one of which is behind the closed doors of elevators.

Yet an elevator ride is indeed not private, as news headlines repeatedly remind us. Desmond Hague, the now former CEO of large concession company Centerplate, was recently caught on an elevator surveillance camera abusing a dog. Though his actions were undeniably wrong, Hague was likely bolstered by the belief that his actions were private. Jay-Z and Solange Knowles’ infamous clearly failed to teach Hague that what happens behind the doors of an elevator still happens in front of a camera.

What happens on your own phone camera is not private either. The photo you saved on your password protected iCloud account is also accessible to the public for perusal. Last week, nude photographs of A-list celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence and Rihanna were distributed on the Internet after being stolen from the celebrities’ online storage. The hackers’ ability to gain access to these photos is a warning to the public that online data storage is simply not safe despite password protection.

The old idiom of “behind closed doors” suggests that there are events that can actually occur in complete privacy. Yet in an increasingly digitized world full of smart phones and information stored online, the notion that there is still an element of privacy becomes less absolute.

As Internet-literate students we acknowledge that we must give up a bit of our personal an open web. We also know that Facebook and Google make big toward users, and view us not as people and faces but as numbers and commodities. By using their services, we are willingly sharing our interests, likes, dislikes and our shopping preferences.

I am not arguing that we should not use these services, or ever ride on elevators. However, I do believe that we should take these headlines as reminders that we can rarely expect absolute privacy.

The solution is simple: Think before you act. Don’t do or say anything in public or online that you wouldn’t want your future children to see. And remember, as scary as it sounds, you are being watched.

Dr. Moisés Barón, the current vice president of Student Wellness, has resigned from the University of San Diego after 22 years of teaching and work as an administrator. Dr. Barón is leaving USD to become the new CEO Center for Children.

Faculty and friends joined Dr. Barón for “una despedida,” or farewell party on Thursday, Sept. 4, to bid him goodbye and thank him for his years of service at USD. Carmen Vazquez, vice president of student affairs, spoke of Dr. Barón’s accomplishments at USD, highlighting the legacy of care he will leave behind.

“To Moisés’s credit he has developed a student-centered support service area for meeting the current health, mental health and wellness needs of all USD students,” Vazquez said.

Vazquez also noted Dr. Barón’s sense of humor and upstanding character.

“Moisés is a wise, strong campus leader who is well respected by his staff and all that encounter him,” Vazquez said.

“We have been blessed with such a gifted, talented and dedicated professional.”

Dr. Barón leaves behind a long list of accomplishments that can be traced through his work at USD. A clinical psychologist, he immigrated from Mexico City to San Diego to attend graduate school. He then began his academic work at USD in 1992 teaching in the Marital and Family Therapy program at the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES).

Dr. Barón’s dedication to the mental, physical and emotional health of students earned him a promotion to vice president of Student Wellness. Over his 12 years of service in this position, Dr. Barón has worked to create full collaboration and integration all of USD’s wellness services, which include the Counseling Center, the Center for Health and Wellness Promotion and Disability and Learning Differences Resource Center. Dr. Barón also played a large role in developing the Student Health Center into the state-of-theart, nationally accredited facility that it is today.

Dr. Barón believes the integration and collaboration of services is vital to the success and well being of USD students.

“When a student accesses any of these services it’s like an entry point to all of the supports that are available,” Dr. Barón said. “So it’s not that if a student

goes to the Health Center they are only going to be looking at what’s wrong from a medical point of view. [The Health Center] is going to be looking at it more holistically. Likewise if students go to the Counseling Center.”

Dr. Barón said that this type of collaboration within a university system is unique.

“Many universities struggle to create that level of integration,” he said.

“But we have had wonderful staff that buy into this philosophy and understand that this is the best way to provide care to students at any college at this time.”

Based on the number of students seeking wellness services, that collaboration is working.

According to Dr. Barón, the Health Center services 52 percent of the entire USD student population each year. The Counseling Center sees 12 percent of the student population each year. Disability

and Learning Differences Resource Center has also grown.

Last decade, the center served just 40 students; today it serves 450 students.

Dr. Barón sees the increased utilization of student wellness resources as a good sign.

“It means that students are aware [of the resources] and students are hearing the message of ‘take care of yourself, don’t wait,’” he said.

Having accomplished so much at USD, Dr. Barón will now begin a new legacy as CEO of San Diego’s Center for Children.

Dr. Barón said the decision to but he looks forward to future collaborations between Center for Children and USD. seeing the last of me,” Dr. Barón said. “I plan to do my best to stay connected with this university that has been absolutely wonderful.”

AS kicks off its Get on the Grass Initiative

Provided by Associated Students, the games are part of AS’s Get on the Grass initiative. According to AS, the initiative hopes to spark additional school spirit while creating a greater sense of community at USD. AS teamed with Campus Recreation and Outdoor Adventures to provide the games to students. According to AS, the two organizations have set up bins around campus where students can grab a frisbee and start playing between classes. Students can also check out larger games, like bocce ball and ladder ball at the UC information desk.

AS President Dom Pera believes AS’s investment in these games will be worth the money spent.

“Through purchasing these goods, our hope is that students capitalize on the opportunities we’ve given them to truly make campus look different,” Pera said.

outdoor fun at USD. “We are so lucky at USD to have such a beautiful campus and amazing weather throughout the year, so it’s absurd to think that in the past we didn’t utilize the spaces we have in order to have fun,” Pera said.

Pera said he hopes the Get on the Grass initiative will instill a

sense of pride for USD’s beautiful campus.

“Wouldn’t it be great to see something going on outside every day?” Pera said. “This can really help students to meet each other as well, hopefully connecting students to each other and helping to create a more inclusive campus environment.”

SEPTEMBER 3 Location: In front of Copley Library At 5:52 p.m. Public Safety responded to a report that an employee’s car had possibly been damaged by a construction crew. Officers found a large crack in the car’s windshield, as well as rocks and cement residue around the car.

SEPTEMBER 3 Location: University Terrace Apartments At approximately 11:06 p.m. Public Safety responded to a report from a resident assistant of an odor of marijuana in the area. Upon investigation one of the resident students admitted to smoking marijuana in his room. The student was also found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana.

SEPTEMBER 2 Location: Cuyamaca Hall At approximately 12:17 a.m. Public Safety responded to a report of an intoxicated female resident student. Upon investigation, officers determined the student was unable to care for herself. The student was voluntarily transported to detox.

SEPTEMBER 2 Location: Maher Hall At approximately 1:56 a.m. Public Safety responded to a resident assistant’s report of students smoking marijuana. Upon investigation, five resident students were cited for underage possession of alcohol and two students were cited for marijuana and drug paraphernalia violations.

SEPTEMBER 2 Location: Main Kiosk At approximately 9:25 p.m. Public Safety made contact with a 31-year-old white male, Ryan Roper, who is not affiliated with the University of San Diego and is not permitted to be on campus. Roper was seen in the vicinity of San Buenaventura Residence Hall. Roper is approximately six feet tall and weighs 165 pounds. If students see Roper they are asked to call Public Safety immediately.

SEPTEMBER 1 Location: Vistas Palomar At approximately 9:12 p.m. Public Safety responded to a report of a bicycle theft in the Vistas Palomar area. Upon investigation the owner of the bicycle stated that the bike had been secured to the bike rack in front of the Palomar building. It was later determined that the bike had not been secured to the bike rack, and had been removed for safe keeping by Public Safety. The bike was returned to the owner.

Changemaker Hub welcomes new director

MANAGING EDITOR @saranicolebb Professor Mike Williams, J.D., Ph.D., has been appointed the new director of the Changemaker Hub at the University of San Diego. USD is one of 26 schools that has received the designation of a Changemaker campus.

This title supports our Catholic mission of community and social justice by generating a culture of innovation and forward thinking on our campus.

As the new director, Williams plans to pick up where previous leadership had left off.

“I’m hoping to build on the foundation that has been established the last three years or so,” Williams said. “The students have been really active with the Hub activities the last few years.”

As a faculty member, Williams is focusing on connecting professors with the Changemaker Hub. His vision for the organization revolves around student-faculty synergy.

“I’m particularly interested in getting faculty more involved and helping faculty see the ways that they can facilitate the Changemaker mission.” Williams said. “I’m anxious to talk to more faculty and get them excited about having these types of opportunities in these classes.”

Some of these opportunities include Community ServiceLearning, study abroad programs and chances for funded research.

a well-rounded individual in college, and plans to connect it to his work at the Changemaker Hub. “I see this through the lens of: We are helping to promote active and productive citizenship, so we want people to be good citizens when they are here and when they’re gone,” Williams said. “Part of that is for all of us to see how we are part of a larger community, and how our actions social impacts for that community to make social change.”

As a USD alumnus class of 1992, Williams’ background lends him an interesting perspective with the Changemaker mission.

“USD was an amazing place when I was here, but there weren’t nearly as many opportunities

to work with faculty, to do undergraduate research,” Williams said. “Community but as a student I didn’t take advantage of it. Also, I don’t think we had any study abroad in the developing world.”

Now that Williams is here at USD behind the scenes, he is amazed by the growing opportunities that exist for current undergraduate students.

“Students are already doing this stuff, and what I see is just taking that next step of real practice, of getting our hands dirty and thinking about long-term relationships with communities locally, whether it’s Linda Vista or Barrio Logan or Logan Heights,” Williams said.

Williams has a program in Makuleke, a South African village, that he takes students to every semester, usually during summer intersession. The class works with a local group in the village called the Equalizers, as in the community called Sharing to Learn. This community engagement class relies heavily on teamwork and a cooperative mindset.

“I think it’s important to not think about being a Changemaker as a superhero, a savior, or the us vs. them mentality or as a charity just making us feel good,” Williams said. “It has to be much more reciprocal and collaborative, and that takes time.

The Hub should be a place that does more of that, and does it in

husband and father, with two sixyear-old twin boys. He is also a huge San Francisco Giants fan.

In his spare time, he enjoys being outdoors, running and bike riding.

In fact, Williams has even made efforts to integrate these interests as workplace involvements.

“We’re actually getting a little faculty softball team together this semester,” Williams said.

In addition to his director position, Williams is a professor for the political science department.

This semester, Williams is teaching a lower division comparative class as a preceptorial for the Social Justice Living Learning Community.

With new responsibilities as the director, he has had to cut down on his time in the classroom, but is excited for increased opportunities to be working with students outside the classroom.

“I’m very much into experimental learning,” Williams said. “It’s really about getting students to apply what they’re learning in the classroom in a practical setting outside of the classroom.”

The Changemaker Hub is hitting the ground running this year, with the Changemaker Fest happening the last week in September. Various events and activities will be held from Sept. 30 to Oct. 4, 2014.

Students can also get involved with the Changemaker Student Committee, and the Changemaker Student Summit will be held in April 2015.

Celeb photo leak: Is iCloud safe?

By Christopher Reyes BUSINESS EDITOR @cd_rey Students know the importance of getting an internship during their college years. It is a way to gain experience, network with professionals and hopefully land a job after graduation.

Last semester I got an internship that I thought would be interesting, a good learning experience and a positive step forward for my career. It was I hoped to be in after graduation.

It was a smaller company, which I liked. I had no interest in an internship with a large corporation and the environment here was light-hearted and unintimidating.

I quickly learned that internships, especially those with small companies, are often just ways for the companies to get cheap labor. In my case, it was free. I did not really need the money. I was living at home and had few expenses. I thought the learning experience would be worth my time and effort, after all, I pay money to take classes here at USD. I did not think I would mind an unpaid internship.

And I would not have minded an unpaid internship, but what I was doing was not an internship.

I was not learning as much as I hoped I would. I picked up a few things here and there but in the end it was overshadowed by my work. My menial and repetitive work was not an internship. It was more of an entry level job, something anyone could do.

Something I did not want to do for free.

I thought of all the other things I could have been doing with my time. Napping, studying, working. My motivation to go to my internship and keep working was draining quickly, so, I left. It was too much work to be getting so little in return.

I was not disappointed, though, a few weeks after I quit.

I did not feel as though I had wasted the months that I worked there and I still do not. I learned things even though I was not being taught.

I learned that I did not like

Apple is no stranger to making headlines. Everyone’s favorite tech giant is constantly being covered for their innovation and easy-to-love products.

But their latest headlines are somewhat less glamorous.

On Aug. 31, 2014, nearly 200 private photos of celebrities were posted to the image sharing website 4chan. The photos, mostly of females and many of them containing nudity, were quickly dispersed across the web via various sharing sites. A page dedicated to the event quickly became the most popular page on the Reddit online community.

An array of celebrities were involved, including Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and her boyfriend Justin Verlander, Kirsten Dunst, Ariana Grande and McKayla Maroney. The scandal quickly rose to the top of Google’s search trends. Jennifer Lawrence was the most searched term for two straight days, followed closely by other related searches.

The scandal sparked swift investigations from the FBI and Apple engineers seeking answers to the many questions. Were the pictures real? And if so, who was capable of accessing them and how were they able to compile so many photos from private celebrity phones.

Some celebrities denied the legitimacy of the photographs.

“The photos are completely fake,” a spokesperson for Grande said. were real and offered litigious warnings.

“This is obviously an outrageous violation of our client, Kate Upton’s, privacy,” Lawrence Shire, Upton’s lawyer, said. “We intend to pursue anyone disseminating or duplicating these illegally obtained images to the fullest extent possible.”

Other celebrities posted denials and expressed their anger on Twitter and Instagram.

Theories began to mount.

Some suggested that the only way a leak of this magnitude could have come to pass was the compilation of the images over a series of months by industry insiders.

Perhaps personal assistants who had access to the phones had sold the images to a party that was compiling them.

One of the stranger theories suggests that celebrities were hacked while they recently attended the Emmy awards due to an exploit of the venue’s WiFi. One simple theory holds that the celebrities’ passwords were easy to guess, and after few tries, the accounts were compromised.

Unfortunately for Apple, a plausible theory arose claiming that Apple’s Find My iPhone service was to blame. A script released online allowed a user to repeatedly guess passwords to Apple accounts without being locked out of the system. Once the password is guessed correctly, it can be used to login to all other has since been patched by Apple, would have allowed hackers the iCloud account of any user of the service. Various Twitter users were able to demonstrate the hack on their own accounts.

Apple’s public response was slow, even amidst worries from many users about the integrity of their accounts. They maintain that

iCloud itself is secure, that the accounts and that the leaks were not a widespread hack of iCloud.

Apple CEO Tim Cook maintains that iCloud itself is safe.

“After more than 40 hours of investigation, we have discovered that certain celebrity accounts were compromised by a very targeted attack on user names, passwords and security questions, a practice that has become all too common on the Internet,” Cook said in an interview.

It took Apple nearly a week to promise an update to the systems security protocol. In response to the individual attacks, Apple announced a ramped up defense system that will require “two-step authentication.” In addition to a traditional password, users may be required to enter a second code that is sent via text to their phone, for example. Users attempt to access their account is made. These updates will go into effect with the release of iOS 8, in

the coming weeks.

Although many students at the University of San Diego have iPhones, most seem unconcerned by the hacks.

Junior Jennifer Wolkenstein has no plans to change her iPhone use. “It isn’t really a concern for me,” said Wolkenstein.

“It seems like there is no reason for the average person to worry. I don’t think most people have anything on there to be concerned about.”

Apple does not seem to be phased by the attacks. They are moving forward with big plans for mobile payments, the iWatch and the new iPhone 6. They recently have shipped so much product that other manufacturers’ shipments have been delayed.

So, it is business as usual for Apple, perhaps the best course of action in this scenario. They have successfully drawn attention away from the scandal and moved it towards the thing that made them famous: the magic of their devices and ideas.

App of the week: Uni Niche

some of what it is like to work in and decided that it is not for me.

Even though I did not enjoy it, not enjoying it taught me something.

I also learned that that quitting is not all that bad. The reason I stayed as long as I did was because it felt good to have an internship. I was proud to be working for a lucrative and well-respected business. But it felt better to quit and explore the other opportunities that were available to me. There was no reason to stay in a position I did not enjoy.

I began searching and found a few other internships, ones that seemed more rewarding and more exciting. I applied and I got one.

Perhaps this one will turn out to be the same as the last, but right now it makes me happy and that is all I can ask for.

Countless apps are available to college students that solve life’s everyday problems. A nearly universal issue that students face is interacting with their roommates.

They need to stay in touch with each other, split expenses and pay bills regularly. With so many students having busy schedules, students should have a quick and easy way to do all of these things.

To make this task easier, two roommates, Sean Thielen and Jonathan Miller, created Uni Niche, an app that streamlines all of these processes.

“The two of us are roommates, and we wanted to create something to make the experience of living with roommates in college even better than it already is,” Miller said.

“We created Uni Niche to help students stay aware of what their roommates are up to, and to help them keep track of what’s going on as a group.”

Uni Niche puts the functionality of various other apps and services all in the same place.

Users can keep their roommates up-to-date on common “statuses,” such as, “Chase is going to the grocery store” or “Sean needs some

‘privacy.’” A few taps shares the status with the user’s roommates.

The app also allows users to share expenses more easily.

Shared expenses can be logged into the app which will then notify roommates. The founders hope this will eliminate the need to keep receipts and try to evenly split various expenses.

Once the app totals the expenses, roommates can pay each other in cash and log it into the app or pay directly with a debit card.

Another function of the app is to remind roommates of scheduled events. It can tell you to take out the trash and when to move your car for street sweeping.

The app does not offer any functionality that is not available elsewhere. But, it packages it into a single, easy-to-use and fairly comprehensive app that has the potential to reduce roommate bit easier for everyone.

Is this necessary when so many apps exist that can do the same thing? Senior Kalvin Tousant is skeptical about the necessity of the app.

“I really like the idea, I just don’t see why there needs to be another app for this,” said Tousant. “What’s wrong with just texting your roommates? We already have a FB feed, Instagram feed, Twitter feed, etc. Is another app really what we need?”

The app is currently only available on the iPhone but an Android version should be released within the month.

Weekly market review Week ending in Sept. 5

The Nasdaq composite was brought down midweek by sharp drops in Apple’s stock price due to the iCloud leak as well as speculation leading up to their event Tuesday.

There was positive news from the manufacturing and service sectors. The Institute for Supply Management revealed

its highest in three years. Later in the week the group also revealed sector was at its best level since 2008.

Thomson Reuters has interpreted the data to show that the service sector is at its best since 2005.

The data is much better than expected and indicates a strengthening economy. This is in line with the predominant view that markets are improving cautiously.

Despite these numbers, job growth slowed from an average 200,000 new jobs per month to a mildly disappointing 142,000 in August. This is far below the 230,000 expected by economists.

OPINION Procrastination & safe homework

Procrastination is a foul demon that can and will rip out your soul via your grades. Now that sounds a little dark, but it is the only way I can get your attention about this potentially I know you might be thinking, “College is the time to experiment with procrastinating,” but you could not be more wrong.

College is the exact time to not procrastinate, and the best way to do this is to stay away from people who commit this terrible act. They will stop at nothing to pressure you into trying out procrastinating and not doing your homework until the very last minute by telling you it is what all the “cool kids” are doing.

Unbelievable. What would your parents say? How do you think they would feel if they knew their babies were procrastinating only a few minutes after they dropped them off?

Horrible is how they would feel. Probably. Of course, if they are supporters of procrastination, which is entirely possible with the way people are these days, then their tears may be shed for joy rather than shame.

Either way, forget about everyone else it will affect and just think about you. Do you want to be labeled as someone who does not do their homework until the very last minute? Because that is what you will be, you procrastinating lowlife.

I, for one, have fallen under this spell a time or two. There were a few bad experiences for my family and myself, and life was looking low. Nonetheless, they supported me through all of my Procrastinators Anonymous classes, which really made a world of difference; bless their little hearts.

You do not want to be under do your homework and read the things you are supposed to read.

Life will appear much less gloomy and unorganized. The guilt you will feel on yourself is never something you want to experience.

You can go your years here with the mindset of a procrastinator and have a ton of time to do activities but suffer academically, or you can do all of your homework right away, do well academically and still have plenty of time for activities.

Wait, really? I can simply do my homework right away, be done with it all, then go do activities?

Amazing, simply amazing.

That sounds like a safe homework bet to me. Practicing this safe homework strategy is the best way to stay abstinent against procrastination, and I think that is something we can all agree upon.

I wish I would have known about safe homework before starting to procrastinate. Well you live and you learn, I guess.

Uber regulation kills business

Uber is a recent example of government-protected businesses inhibiting innovation.

Uber, created in 2009, makes traveling easier for its consumers. Its users can arrange for “blackcars” and ride-shares through the app. No tip is required, the credit card is saved to your account and the driver picks you up based on GPS. Additionally, customers have the ability to track the location of their drivers using GPS. Users can also rate the drivers and pay on their phones. Uber is a simple and effective service.

Uber is facing backlash largely from taxi and limousine companies in various cities.

These highly regulated companies have tried to ban Uber instead of trying to innovate their own products charges have been aimed at Uber for dispatching rides without a license.

Plenty of college students, especially ones at USD, use Uber frequently because it is a superior service. It would be prefers a taxi service to Mission Beach over Uber.

USD senior Rick Norton is a regular customer of Uber. “When you’re traveling a mile down the road you might as well do it in a blacked out escalade,” said Norton. “It’s like a taxi except it’s more convenient and doesn’t smell like stale cigarettes.”

“Uber is a more personal experience than a taxi. You get a can see the car they’re driving.

I like having conversations with my cab driver and Uber makes it an easier experience,” said USD senior Aidan Breaux.

Regulation of ride services is not all bad. They make sure drivers and their vehicles are safe for the consumer, the consumer is charged reasonable fares Without regulation, having too many vehicles for hire would Regulation also comes with cost. With such a controlled and regulated industry, there is less effect of a competitive market pressure. The incentive for innovation decreases. No incentive exists for a driver of a taxicab to clean up and improve his or her vehicle when every other taxi has the same fare and is willing to drive wherever the customer desires. The price is the market. Why would a driver change his or her service?

A driver or company will not invest or implement new technology to improve their service when they only have the ability to charge what the local taxicab commission lets them charge.

Taxicab unions do not like Uber because it is taking away their business. The allure of Uber is its simplicity to use. Taxicab companies would be better off competing and creating their own app for consumers to use on their smartphones as well.

Competition is good for the consumer. Businesses compete

providing superior products and lower prices. Uber is a service that makes traveling easier and lowers prices for its consumers.

Uber should be praised for improving its industry, not reprimanded.

The creation of Uber pitfalls of regulation. Uber is a prime example that demonstrates how when people want things, the market will provide for it. It also demonstrates the ineffectiveness of central planning. With more government, there are fewer freedoms. Regulations and freedoms are trade-offs.

The downside of regulation is it protects incumbent businesses and kills competition.

Many regulations are written by incumbent businesses themselves in order to remove competition.

A May 23, 2013 article by the New York Times stated Citibank lobbyists wrote 70 lines According to Cathy Reisenwitz of The Blaze, “There are three main reasons corporations like Citibank write their own legislation. First, lawmakers feel pressure from constituents to regulate industries about which their staffs know nothing; corporate lobbyists and lawyers provide much-needed information. Second, it’s much easier and faster for a company to understand and comply with a regulation it wrote. Third, and most important, companies write regulation that is easier and cheaper to comply for them than for their competitors.”

This phenomenon is known as the capture theory of

regulation.

The regulatory agency becomes “captured” by the industry it is supposed to regulate. Regulators become incentivized to further their own self-interest instead of acting as an independent regulating entity. Maybe members of the regulatory agency are former or future employees, or both. It creates a monopolized industry.

The business receives more Of course, the consumer suffers most. The regulation raises cost for the company, therefore lowering its on the consumer. The lack of genuine competition also hinders innovation and product or service improvement.

The sharing economy opposes regulation. Consumers have more money and more leisure time.

Ultimately, everyone gains.

Ideally, lawmakers would of the industries they regulate.

This is not the case. In cases for the largest number of people is allowing competition within a market-based system with less regulation.

Regulations protect obsolete businesses and raise costs for consumers. For every consumer, especially college students who will leave the educational system and begin a new lifestyle, it is useful to be aware of issues such as excessive regulation.

Decisions of government and its policies affect the costs of living and lifestyles for everyone.

This student organization celebrates and supports student veterans and their supporters. This new organization hopes to bring awareness and information to the US D community.

USD Dance Company

This talented group of students comes from a variety of dance backgrounds and collaborate together to make up a creative and diverse group. The club performs at events such as US D football games, Relay for Life and their annual dance recitals.

Intervarsity Christian Fellowship

This non-denominational group meets every Thursday night in Aromas for food, worship and new friendships. Members of the group help lead community bible studies as well as hosting retreats and community events.

The Bullpit

Started by energetic students wanting to reinvigorate school spirit, the Bull Pit cultivates a student fan base at every sporting event. Any student can join and bring their Torero spirit to the group.

Club Tennis

The club tennis team combines a variety of skill levels and athletic background to form a competitive group of individuals that has been a successful team for the last four years. The tight knit team travels to various universities and competes against other clubs in singles and in doubles matches.

PRIDE

The Filipino Ugnayan Student Organization gives students of Filipino descent the opportunity to get in touch with their cultural identity as well as receive support academically and socially. This club is open to anyone who’s interested in learning more about the Filipino culture.

This passionate group of individuals works together to promote awareness and knowledge of the LGBTQ community and their supporters. From hosting on campus events to Safe Space Ally Training and Rainbow Educator programming, P RI DE is an active group that provides opportunities for leadership and advocacy.

This group of dedicated volunteers aids the San Diego community in areas such as environmental care where members help in beach clean up or community gardens. Interfraternity Council

I FC is the governing body for the seven fraternities on campus, with an eighth chapter joining in Spring 2015. The chapters host motivational speakers, philanthropy events and social events celebrating Greek unity and brotherhood.

USD Swing Dance Club

The US D Swing Club invites students to try out a new form of dance while forming new friendships and enjoying a fun tradition. One of the club’s main events is First Saturday Swing, a once a month event where new dancers can learn the moves at the beginning of the evening and then take their new newly learned moves to be pros in no time.

Panhellenic

Panhellenic is the governing body for the eight sororities on campus, with two more chapters joining in Spring 2015. The chapters include two multicultural sororities which celebrate their ethnic heritage and brings even more diversity to the diverse Greek community.

Club Ultimate Frisbee

FAMA

Ultimate frisbee provides a fun and competitive environment open to students of every athletic ability. Students can partake in this casual sport that meets once a week on the Valley Field.

The Folklorico and Mariachi Association educates students on Mexican culture through traditional Ballet Folklorico and Mariachi music. Students have the ability to take part in social services, gain leadership skills and inspire others to take an interest in the culture through an artistic approach.

Colleges Against Cancer

CAC focuses on providing advocacy and information for all forms of cancer. They host tabling events with an emphasis on early detection and healthy lifestyle choices. CAC also hosts the annual Relay for Life event which brings together the entire campus community to raise money for cancer research.

Italian Culture and Language Organization

Students are able to learn more about Italian culture and fine-tune their Italian language skills. There’s also opportunity to converse with others learning Italian and meet international students from Italy.

By Brittany Carava FEATURE EDITOR @brittcarava After some contemplation, I realized I have a new pet peeve.

When people are talking about a friend or acquaintance and say, “Oh I’ve known them forever!” it really bothers me and I want to tell them “No! You haven’t known them for forever, only since freshman year!” Although I sometimes catch myself saying it, I realized that I only have a select amount of friends that I can actually say that about. kindergarten I sat next to a blonde girl named Rachel and we soon became fast friends by trying to avoid the two annoying boys also sitting at our table. We started to play at recess and became friends with the other ten girls in our class. A few years later, she broke the news that she was moving to Connecticut that summer.Although I was devastated that I would never see her again, she assured me that we would stay friends as she would visit California twice a year.

Every year for ten years I was able to visit with Rachel and still grow up with her even though we were on opposite ends of the country. Regardless of having parts of our lives be spent apart, we were still able to stay friends thanks to technology. Cell phones and the rise of Facebook allowed us to communicate and see what was going on in each others’ lives.

Our senior year in high school she told me that she had decided to come to California for college and was looking at a few schools in Southern California.

Our intended majors were so entirely different we thought that there was no way we would choose the same college. After our college visits and orientations we both decided on USD independently of one another. Both us and our parents were absolutely thrilled to in the same state again and on the same campus.

Although we both have other friend groups in addition to our mutual friends, we still have maintained the closest relationship that we have created over the last 16 years. When I say I’ve known her “forever,” I feel like I truly mean it as I have known her for over 75 percent of my life. Not many people can say they shared college together. She had been a constant support system through every major stage of my life and to me that’s what I think of as knowing someone “forever”.

Without a doubt, I know we will be in each others’ weddings and have our kids grow up together.

I feel that all of these traits create a true friendship; seeing each other at all stages of life, accepting each other for who they are and being able to see the legacy of your friendship live on through your children.

Notes from abroad: Toreros talk travel

So many of our Toreros are studying abroad this semester. Each week we will feature two pieces written by students who are spending this fall overseas. Here are this week’s submissions:

Exploring the beautifully rich culture of Cork, Ireland

By AnnaLee Barclay CONTRIBUTOR Ireland’s amazing if you enjoy great people, great food and great scenery. There are also some great pubs, where you will be made fun of incessantly if you do not love whiskey or beer.

Our legitimate classes start on Monday, Sept. 8, and as I type this out on Friday, Sept. 5, I do not even have my schedule yet.

Ireland provides a lovely setting for one to be a procrastinator, and of that I am certainly taking advantage.

USD need not fret though. three-week course for American students, which featured a lecture four days of the week and took us to amazing places two weekends in a row. Our professor, Shane, is a walking encyclopedia and the only person who could talk about basket weaving for 20 minutes without making me fall asleep.

We saw the Cliffs of Moher very cool of course, but the next day he took us to the Aran Islands off the coast of Galway.

Now there are three islands, each bigger than the next, with the biggest island, Inis Mor, being the most popular. Since Shane is a great lad, he took us to the other two, Inis Meain and Inis Oirr, and they were probably my favorite places I’ve ever been to in my life.

The islands are primarily lived on by old men with their dogs and I’m pretty sure elderly Irish men and I have the same soul, so I felt very at peace with my surroundings. We experienced very traditional lifestyles that can only be seen on such a small island that is rarely visited by tourists, such as roof thatching and going to pubs with your professor and bus driver.

In all seriousness, this country is the best place I’ve ever been and I’m already heckling my abroad advisor, Sabrina, to next semester. Seriously though, she made my dreams come true.

Irish people are genuinely the nicest people and they actually like Americans, making them the best part of my trip thus far.

By David Pennington CONTRIBUTOR The study abroad experience is pretty unique, not just to the place that you visit, but also the school that you attend. I will try to write broadly about

the Australian experience but I know other people studying in Australia who are at different schools whose experience will be far different from mine.

When planning my time here in Australia, I was not only looking at what classes to take,

and what Sydney was like, but I wanted to travel. I was looking stuff up about traveling through Australia, and trying to plan trips to Bali, Thailand and many other places. However, as my experience progressed, I realized that Australia is a big country

with a lot of things to see and I shifted my focus to traveling within Australia.

The only trip that I have managed to make so far was to Cairns, which we went to for a “Bridging Cultures” program to help teach us about Australia and the study abroad experience. The program that USD coordinated also organized an excursion to a wildlife park, where we held a koala, hung out with some kangaroos, and saw a traditional aboriginal dance to the tunes of a didgeridoo. There was also an excursion to the Great Barrier Reef where we were able to scuba dive with sharks and sea turtles over the vibrant coral surrounded by brightly colored

experienced. One of the coolest places I have been to is called the Blue Mountains. It is a national park just west of Sydney that is easily accessible by the train.

Unlike other excursions I have been on that were more touristy, the Blue Mountains offer an opportunity to dive deep into the Australian bush, and hike into a canyon I can only compare to a forested Grand Canyon.

I am falling in love with all of the beauty that this country has to offer, but my favorite part of Australia is by far the people I have met at the University of Technology Sydney. I don’t know if it is the same at other universities around Australia, but I was put into a six-person shared

not organized by USD, but by a company that sends students from all over the United States to countries all over the world for study abroad. These other people are now my good friends who I still spend time with even though most of them attended a different university.

Since then, I have not had a chance to travel outside of Sydney because I have class every weekday, but I am

a guy from Germany. Besides them, it has been easy to meet other people at the university and I have already made many lifelong friends from Australia, and other places around the world.

This living environment has also helped me become immersed in the Australian culture, while learning about many other world cultures. It is beyond anything that I could have ever expected and I am excited for what will come next.

Kris Bryant wins Minor League Player of the Year Former Torero receives award for performance on Cubs’ Triple-A team

SPORTS EDITOR @HJamo Former Torero and Golden Spikes Award winner, Kris Bryant, just added another piece of hardware to his collection.

After being drafted No. 2 overall by the Chicago Cubs in the 2013 Major League Baseball draft, Bryant showed the baseball world that he can translate his college success to the professional level. He received the largest signing bonus in the history of the Chicago Cubs organization at $6.71 million, and is proving that he was worth that amount.

After a tremendous season in the minor leagues, Bryant was awarded the 2014 USA Today Sports Minor League Player of the Year. While competing in the Double-A and Triple-A levels of professional baseball, Bryant tallied 43 home runs, 110 runs batted in, while maintaining a .325 batting average. He was promoted to Triple-A midway through the season, making the move from Tennessee to Iowa.

Toreros look to end road swing with a win

University of San Diego women’s soccer is in the midst of a tough four-game road trip that has handed the team two losses and a tie in the past two weeks, bringing their overall season record to 1-3-2. Friday’s pit USD against University of California, Irvine.

UC Irvine is coming off a small win streak, beating both Fresno State University and Gonzaga University 3-0 last week. The Anteaters carry a

2-4 record on the season. The Anteaters will present a challenge for the Toreros, boasted a wellbalanced offensive attack.
