Together,theseideasreinforceoneofHarrison’scentral beliefs:leadershipdevelopmentmustbetargetedtotheleader’s level,context,andfutureresponsibilities.Anewfrontlineleader doesnotneedthesamedevelopmentexperienceasasenior executive.Ahigh-potentialemergingleaderdoesnotneedthe samesupportassomeonepreparingtoleadaglobalbusiness. TheThree-LeggedStool

Fromthesefoundationalconcepts,Harrisonbuiltaleadership developmentmethodologythatheoftendescribesasa three-leggedstool.Themetaphorissimplebecausetheprinciple issimple:removeoneleg,andtheentiresystembecomes unstable.

Thefirstlegisself-insightthroughassessment.Harrison distinguishesbetweentwotypesofassessments.Signs-based assessments,suchasHogan,CliftonStrengths,andEQ-i,help leadersunderstandtheirpreferences,tendencies,andpatterns. Thesetoolssupportself-awarenessanddiscovery.Signals-based assessments,including360-degreeandmulti-ratertools,focuson observablebehaviorandskillproficiency Theyshowleaders howothersexperiencethem.

Together,theseassessmentscreateamorecompletepicture. Theyhelpleadersunderstandnotonlywhotheyareinclinedto be,buthowtheirleadershipisactuallylandingwithothers.

Thethirdlegiscoaching.Harrisonseescoachingasessential becauseithelpstranslatelearningintoaction. “Coaching serves as a force multiplier in the transfer of the skills learned back on the job and to help add context to what is being learned,” heexplains.
