Letter from the Editors Dear Reader, Welcome to Unquowazine volume 3! We are excited to show you this year’s lower school literary and art magazine. For the past few months, Unquowazine sta have been hard at work to put this magazine together. Due to the global pandemic, we have had to do it all through google meets. This year Grade 3 created some original work specifically for UnquowaZine. Make sure you turn to their creative pieces on learning during Covid. Check out the Pre-K’s artwork based on the Princess and The Pea! The 4th grader’s mysteries will have you on the edge of your seat! Or read first grade’s opinion writing about why they would like a class pet! Finally, we would like to thank the entire UnquowaZine Vol. 3 sta for all of their hard work. We would like to thank the lower school for sharing your artistic ability with us! This year's cover was designed by Alegria. She did a fantastic job and it looks great. We would also like to thank all the grade-level editors for all the long hours you put into editing these pieces! We would like to thank Mrs. Kerr for organizing all the PR announcements and helping Grade 3 with their special reporting! Lastly, we’d also like to thank Mrs. E. We hope you enjoy it! Vivian K. & Sierra Editors-in-Chief

The Life of a Northeastern Chipmunk Chapter 1 - Introduction Have you ever wanted to learn about an Northeastern Chipmunk? Here are some facts that you might need to know if you ever want to learn more about Northeastern Chipmunks, you know, if you’re writing an essay or studying about them. A Northeastern Chipmunk is NOT able to feed, unless you’re an expert on chipmunks, because you might know what chipmunks eat. CHipmunks are fragile and have many unharmful predators, yet some are harmful. It is only found in the Northeast of the US, Door, Kewaunee, Northeastern Brown, and possibly Manitowoc counties in Northeastern Wisconsin.

Chapter 2 - What it Looks Like A Northeastern chipmunk can grow to about 30cm long, or grow to about a foot including the tail. It has reddish-brown fur on its upper body and five black, white, and dark brown stripes going down its back to the tip of its tail. Northeastern Chipmunks have paler fur on their lower body, usually their stomach. They have bushy tails, and they have large cheek-pouches to carry food like nuts, seeds, and even peanuts. They even have those pouches to carry long, circular, or big fruits and vegetables, like oranges, carrots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and cultivated grains. A ground squirrel almost looks like the Northeastern Chipmunk, but it has no head stripes. Since chipmunks are very small, they have many predators, including hawks, owls, foxes, raccoons, snakes, weasels, coyotes, bobcats,

lynx, domestic dogs, and domestic cats.

Chapter 3 - Habitat:

Drew Grade 4 215

Northeastern Chipmunks usually live in deciduous woods and urban parks throughout the northeastern United States and southern Canada. These chipmunks prefer to live in rocky areas, log piles, and shrubs to provide cover. They live in many places, from the top of Canada to the bottom of Mexico. They live in alpine forests and even somedeserts. Most chipmunks are found anywhere where trees are! This is because they love to climb trees, and maybe even in the winter, you can find a Northeastern Chipmunk in a tree, because they have to stock up nuts to keep them safe because it’s too cold for them to get out, just like squirrels. Only one chipmunk lives in a burrow, and if they get in your yard to live in a tree or log or roof, they won’t ruin anything.

Chapter 4 - Behavior Northeastern Chipmunks can climb trees very well, like squirrels. They bring soil in their cheek pouches to a different location to hide to the construction of its burrow. They have many different chatter-calls like most birds. One of the calls is a trill at 130 vibrations per minute. They usually have babies in May and June, and maybe even July. They are mostly active at dusk and dawn. They are energetic and fast and have those pouches on their cheeks, so they can gather about 165 nuts a day. Sort of like cats, they use urine to mark things, but cats usually rub their side on something to say, “This is mine.” Chapter 5 - Conclusion There is some information about Northeastern Chipmunks. I really hope you enjoyed what I wrote and getting to know more about Northeastern Chipmunks with me. I hope this helps you if you are getting information about Northeastern Chipmunks! If you see a chipmunk in your yard or a park, remember that I told you about them! Northeastern Chipmunks wave to you to say bye.
