14 YEARS

I’mproud of the fact that my lovely wife and I have been able to navigate a 14-year relationship effectively and intentionally, I really am. I now better understand what a healthy relationship looks and feels like because trust me it’s been a long time coming and I am here for it!

For us, sustaining a healthy longterm relationship takes effort, commitment, and effective communication. Here are some key tools we’ve use to help us maintain a healthy, loving relationship:

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

Open and honest communication is the foundation of a healthy relationship. Share your thoughts, feelings, and concerns with your partner, and encourage them to do the same. Active listening is also crucial; it shows that you value and respect their perspective.

QUALITY TIME

Whew Chile, I can’t stress the importance of spending quality time together, doing activities that both of you enjoy. Also, make time for regular date nights or outings to keep the romance alive.

TRUST

Trust is essential in any relationship. Be reliable, keep your promises, and avoid betraying your partner's trust. Trust takes time to build but can be easily eroded if not maintained.

RESPECT

Show respect for your partner's feelings, boundaries, and individuality. Avoid criticism, name-calling, and belittling. Treat your partner with kindness and empathy.

INTIMACY

Physical and emotional intimacy are vital aspects of a relationship. Keep the spark alive by expressing

affection, both verbally and physically. Be attentive to your partner's needs and desires.

APPRECIATION AND GRATITUDE

Express your appreciation for your partner regularly. Small gestures of gratitude can go a long way in making your partner feel loved and valued.

INDEPENDENCE AND INTERDEPENDENCE

While spending time together is important, it's also crucial to maintain your individual interests, hobbies, and friendships. Healthy relationships strike a balance between independence and interdependence.

Every relationship is unique, and what works for one couple may not work for another. It's important to continually communicate with your partner and adapt to each other's needs and preferences as your relationship evolves. Ultimately, maintaining a healthy long-term relationship requires ongoing effort and a genuine commitment to each other's happiness and well-being.

CHRISTIAN NATIONALISM

& WHY YOU SHOULD BE WORRIED!

Christian nationalism is the new buzz word for “Christian Taliban.” One could argue that the United States is flirting with a potential clash of citizens rights all rooted under the disguise of religious rights! Worry about Christian nationalism arises from several important concerns related to politics, society, and individual rights. While it's important to note that not all Christians support or are part of Christian nationalism, the movement itself has raised concerns for the following reasons:

1 2 3 4

THREAT TO RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

Christian nationalism often seeks to elevate Christianity above other religions, potentially undermining the principle of religious freedom enshrined in many democratic societies. It can lead to discrimination against religious minorities and create an environment where non-Christians may feel marginalized or pressured to conform.

EROSION OF THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE

A key principle in many democratic systems is the separation of church and state. Christian nationalism can erode this separation, leading to the mingling of religious beliefs and government policies. This can result in laws and policies that favor one religious’ group over others and undermine the impartiality of the government.

5 6 7

POLITICAL POLARIZATION

Christian nationalism is often associated with conservative political ideologies. When religious identity becomes intertwined with political identity, it can contribute to political polarization and make it difficult for people with differing beliefs to find common ground and work together on important issues.

THREAT TO SOCIAL COHESION

A society that values diversity and inclusion is often more cohesive and stable. Christian nationalism, with its exclusionary tendencies, can undermine social cohesion by fostering division and resentment among different religious and cultural groups.

UNDERMINING SCIENCE AND EDUCATION

In some cases, Christian nationalism can lead to skepticism or rejection of scientific principles, particularly those that conflict with certain religious beliefs. This can hinder scientific progress and lead to policies that disregard scientific evidence, potentially harming public health and environmental sustainability.

HUMAN RIGHTS CONCERNS

Extreme forms of Christian nationalism have been associated with efforts to restrict the rights of marginalized groups, including LGBTQ+ individuals. This can lead to discrimination and violations of human rights.

GLOBAL IMPLICATIONS

When Christian nationalism intersects with foreign policy, it can impact international relations. Policies driven by religious beliefs may not align with the principles of diplomacy, cooperation, and human rights that underpin international relations, potentially straining relationships with other countries.

It's important to emphasize that not all Christians subscribe to or support Christian nationalism, and many Christians actively work to promote tolerance, inclusivity, and the separation of church and state. Concerns about Christian nationalism should be distinguished from concerns about the beliefs and actions of a specific subset of individuals or groups. Vigilance in upholding democratic principles, including religious freedom and the separation of church and state, is key to addressing these concerns while respecting the diversity of beliefs in a pluralistic society.

MAKE YOUR EMOTIONAL WELLNESS A PRIORITYyou’re worth it!

Emotional wellness is just as important as physical health for living a balanced and fulfilling life. Emotional wellness includes having a positive self-image, managing stress effectively, and cultivating healthy relationships. Achieving emotional wellness requires self-awareness, effective communication, and healthy coping skills. While it can seem daunting, making slight changes in your daily life can have a big impact over time.

Focusing on consistency rather than perfection is key. Your emotional health and happiness are worth the effort.

8 | THE UNLEASHED VOICE

Prioritize your emotional wellnessyour

can strengthen relationships. Learning to express negative emotions like anger or frustration in a calm, assertive way can prevent conflicts from escalating. Active listening skills like making eye contact, summarizing what people say and avoiding judgment can improve communication in all your relationships.

Self-awareness is the first step toward emotional wellness. This means understanding your emotions, thoughts, strengths, and weaknesses. Keeping a journal to reflect on your feelings can boost selfawareness. Being honest with yourself about how you truly feel rather than hiding your emotions can improve mental health. Once you are more self-aware, you can identify negative patterns of thinking that may be holding you back and work to change them. You can also build on your strengths and talents to boost confidence and self-esteem.

Effective communication is another important aspect of emotional wellness. This includes both listening and expressing yourself in an assertive, honest manner. Being transparent with others about how you feel, rather than hiding your emotions,

Cultivating healthy coping skills is also vital for emotional well-being. Unhealthy coping mechanisms like overeating, substance abuse or isolation can damage your mental health over time. Incorporate healthy habits into your daily routine like deep breathing, meditation, journaling, exercising, or spending time in nature. Even setting aside 10 minutes for yourself each day to relax and recharge can help manage stress and improve your mood. Having a positive mindset and practicing gratitude daily can also boost emotional wellness.

Strong, supportive relationships are another key aspect of emotional health. Feeling connected to others and like you have people who care about you improves happiness and life satisfaction. Make an effort to nurture your relationships through quality time, acts of kindness and effective communication. If you feel isolated, consider joining a club, faith community or taking a class to meet new people with similar interests. Even volunteering your time to help others can boost your mood and sense of purpose.

While achieving optimal emotional wellness requires commitment and effort, making small changes in your daily habits and routines can add up over time. Focus on consistency rather than perfection as you work to incorporate self-awareness, effective communication, healthy coping skills and social connection into your life. Your emotional health and happiness are worth the effort. Taking that first step towards a more balanced emotional state will begin you on a journey of improved selfknowledge, relationships and overall well being.

HERE ARE SOME STEPS THAT CAN HELP PROMOTE EMOTIONAL WELLNESS:

1. Manage stress. Learn ways to reduce stressors in your life and develop healthy coping mechanisms like exercise, meditation, and deep breathing. Managing stress helps keep emotions in check.

2. Practice self-care. Take time each day to do things that help you feel good both physically and mentally. This could include hobbies, spending time with loved ones, getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods, etc.

3. Challenge negative thoughts.

When you catch yourself thinking negatively, reframe those thoughts into something more balanced or positive. Negative self-talk can harm your emotional well-being.

4. Express your feelings. Find healthy ways to express and process what you are feeling, whether through journaling, talking with friends, or creative outlets like art. Bottling emotions up isn't good.

5. Set boundaries. Know your limits and what you need to feel emotionally healthy, then communicate and enforce those boundaries with others. This helps prevent burnout.

6. Be kind to yourself. Speaking to yourself with compassion instead of criticism. We all make mistakes - learn from them without selfcondemnation.

7. Practice gratitude. Make a daily habit of reflecting on things you are thankful for. Appreciating life's blessings enhances happiness and optimism.

8. Spend time in nature. Exposure to natural environments has stressrelieving effects and can improve your mental well-being. Taking steps to support your emotional well-being is essential for overall health, happiness, and quality of life. When your emotional needs are met through self-care, stress management, social connection and other strategies, you are better equipped to handle challenges. Emotional wellness provides resilience, optimism and energy to fully engage in life. Neglecting emotional health can lead to distress, dysfunction and increased disease risk over time. Making emotional wellness a priority is truly essential for wellrounded wellness of body and mind.

Regularexercise is one of the most important things we can do for our health and wellness.  Evidence shows that exercise provides a host physical and mental benefits that contribute to an improved sense of wellbeing, stress reliver and overall quality of life. Stress has a negative effect on your health. It can affect your blood sugar levels, food choices, susceptibility to sickness, weight, fat distribution, and more. For this reason, it’s important to find healthy ways to manage your stress. Meditation is one such way, and it has some scientific evidence to support its use for stress management and improving health. For the bible declares in, “Psalms 19:14 - Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” People mediate and talk to God daily!

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people are more likely to experience certain health-related challenges and disparities. For example, LGBT adolescents are especially at risk for being bullied, which can contribute to them thinking about and dying from suicide or using illegal drugs. Schooland family-based interventions can help reduce bullying and violence against LGBT adolescents, address drug use and mental health problems, and improve health.

About 1 in 10 people in the United States don’t have health insurance. People without insurance are less likely to

have a primary care provider, and they may not be able to afford the health care services and medications they need. Strategies to increase insurance coverage rates are critical for making sure more people get important health care services, like preventive care and treatment for chronic illnesses.

In addition, mental health and physical health are closely connected. Mental disorders like depression and anxiety can affect people’s ability to take part in healthy behaviors. Similarly, physical health problems can make it harder for people to get treatment for mental disorders. Increasing screening for mental disorders can help people get the treatment they need.

The bottom line is a few simple steps can go a long way toward improving your eating pattern and wellness. Still, if you’re trying to live a healthier life, do not just focus on the foods you eat. Exercise, sleep, mediation and social relationships are also important. With the evidencebased tips above, it’s easy to introduce small changes that can have a big impact on your overall health.

Timothy has performed on stages around the world as a spoken word artist and is a heavily sought after educational consultant that turns around schools. Urban Thoughts is a proud recipient of The United States of America Congressional Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for Outstanding Service in Education and Community Service. He is a Watering Hole Graduate Fellow from the Cave Canem of the South which is considered the top writer conferences for people of color in the nation. Urban is a heavily awarded spoken word artist, published author and grant writer who loves to educate and inspire.

One of the most brilliant minds in the Mid-South, he attended the (MIT) Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a Project Based Learning Summer Colloquium XQ cohort which led to his new outlook to further incorporate writing using poetry and hip-hop as therapy to create solutions to social justice issues. His work is based in restorative justice practices. Networks throughout the nation reach

out to him for lesson plans, programming to make learning engaging and funding strategy. Recently, he has served as the Principal Consultant for his non-profit Speak Life Society and was rewarded in May 2022 as Walt Disney World's 1 of the 50 Most Innovative Educators and Storyteller's in the Nation. Timothy was identified as 1 of 4 African-Americans, 1 of 2 Black men identified and the only person from the state of Tennessee to be awarded. He proudly represented Memphis, TN, and Shelby County on an international stage as the news went around the world on multiple platforms including CNN, Yahoo, Black Enterprise, and various international news sources.

Q: WHICH ADJECTIVE BEST DESCRIBES YOU? ARE YOU A RENAISSANCE OR A REVOLUTIONARY MAN?

A: My mother raised me to be a renaissance man who masters various arts and intellectual interests. My father raised me to be a revolutionary man that is deeply embedded in the pursuit of equity and truth. I would have to say being a: Jazz Saxophonist, Herbalist, Researcher, Educator, Activist, Poet, Author, Massage Body Worker, Educator, Grant Writer, CEO, Teacher, Strategist,

Restorative Justice Coordinator, Speaker, Philanthropist, Artist, Painter, Storyteller and Blogger. I would have to say that I am a renaissance man. This life is what you make it, and my goal is to continually pursue knowledge.

Q: WHAT FUELS YOUR PASSION WHEN IT COMES TO HELPING OTHERS BUILD THEIR BUSINESSES AND ACHIEVE FINANCIAL FREEDOMS?

A: My family has a history of taking average and below average circumstances and striving towards excellence. My parents sacrificed everything to ensure kids from the small town of Tuskegee, Alabama could achieve and surpass all of their dreams. Now my sister Ramona is a Doctor of Nursing, my sister Angela is a leading thought partner in Public Health, my Brothers Daniel and Andre are both leaders in their fields. All of us hold Bachelor’s degrees, most of us Master's and we have garnered financial security for the next generation of Moore's. I want to ensure now that Memphis and my community of BIPOC people have the means to create freedom for their family.

Q: IF THERE WAS ONE THING YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT MEMPHIS, TN, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

A: I would change leaders that are unwilling to collaborate or to open doors by key holding access points of information and funding. Memphis is a great city and one of the best in the world. What we lack is a deep need for collaboration and safe spaces to have honest conversations around reform, equity, support programming and the reduction of poverty in this city. With all of that said, "Get to the polls. Your vote is critical."

14 | THE UNLEASHED VOICE

So much for a 9 to 5 job. Who has that anymore?

In my house, we power up our computers before 7 and have usually done over an hour of work before we actually get to work. Then, another hour or so after getting home and sometimes again before bed. For those working from home, it’s even more blurred with work occurring throughout the waking hours of the day. The balance of work and play has been up-ended. Oh, and what about our phones?

Americans on average are on their smartphones for 4.25 hours per day. Our internet usage has nearly tripled since 2000 from 9 to over 24 hours per week. We are looking at a computer screen for nearly 40% of our waking hours. Gen Z is up to over 56% per day (might explain why it’s so hard to have a conversation with them).

In America, we average nearly 5 hours of leisure (non-work) daily. What are we doing during that time? Nearly 3 hours is spent, you guessed it, interacting with a computer either in the form of watching TV, social media or email. That leaves a little over 2 hours. Of those, we give on average, only 14 minutes to exercise. It’s no wonder obesity is on the rise everywhere.

The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of exercise per week. That’s 30 minutes a day at least 5 days per week; and that’s just cardio exercise. We are also advised

Balance

as walking for 30 minutes can make a significant improvement. So what can we do to make a positive shift either for us or for someone we know?

to weight train for 30 minutes at least 2x per week. That brings us up to 200 minutes per week of activity. With an average of only 14 minutes of daily exercise, we aren’t even getting 100 minutes a week. We’re in trouble.

The National Institute of Health states, “An underappreciated primary cause of most chronic conditions is the lack of sufficient daily physical activity. Physical inactivity is a primary cause of most chronic diseases.” Even just a small increase in daily activity such

As a Physical Therapist, I’ve spent my career teaching people how to find that balance of exercise for better health. I used to map out an exercise plan and teach my patients how to start a routine based on their physical fitness level. Through the years though, I’ve learned that I need to understand a person’s obstacles first before setting them up on an exercise program. What are the barriers? You see, it does no good to add something else to a person’s day when they don’t have the space for it in their routine. It’s also not going to be squeezed in until it’s rewarding enough to become a habit. So why not use some of our addiction to screen and internet time to help us exercise?

The best way to exercise for those who don’t just love the sweat, pain and heavy breathing naturally, is distraction. Use the internet to your advantage and stream your favorite music, audio books or podcasts (loudly so you don’t hear your heavy breathing). Binge on some new release shows. If an obstacle is motivation and consistency, work out with an accountability buddy. If pain is present, stay with a physical therapist who can monitor your response until it’s no longer painful. Knowing the obstacles and eliminating them one by one takes more time but also yields more successful outcomes.

Being able to balance our busy lives and remain healthy requires a conscious effort. Incorporating short bouts of exercise throughout our work day can be just as effective as going to the gym a few days a week. Work and technology may be consuming more of our leisure time but we can use it to our advantage too. Pairing exercise with the distractions of streaming entertainment can turn a negative into a positive and help build healthier habits. The rewards of a sexier body, more energy and vitality don’t hurt either. It’s never too late to start so don’t let limited free time and crazy work hours keep you from exercising. Identify your obstacles and remove them one at a time. Your quality and longevity of life depend on it.

WE STAND WITH DONOVAN!

Donovan Morton is a 21-year-old student from Canton, MS. He is a senior majoring in Biology Pre Medicine at Jackson State University. Donovan considers himself to be very competitive and his first love is dance and favorite foods are seafood & salad. Donovan recently made a Facebook post that went viral about his removal from Jackson State University Cheer Squad. To show support for a young black gay man who dare to love openly. TUV Media reached out to help highlight the situation and to support Donovan through this difficult situation.

Q: AS A YOUNG ADULT HOW CONFIDENT ARE YOU WITH LIVING IN YOUR TRUTH?

A: As a young adult I make it my business to be who Donovan is. I've progressed significantly in attempting to track down approaches to communicating for myself without attempting to diminish myself down. I can adjust to rules however not separation of who I can be.

Q: HOW HAS THE INCIDENT AT JSU AFFECTED YOUR CONFIDENCE AND SELFESTEEM?

A: It hasn't affected my confidence by any means. I'm very obstinate about

representing what's right and what I put stock in (fair treatment all around). I would be absurd to say I don't miss performing for my supporters and to complete what I began in my freshman year. Yet the whole circumstance has just taken care of my enthusiasm for supporting myself. It really helped me to receive all the positive feedback from my Facebook post. I realize that my speaking out was bigger than me, especially when it gives individuals boldness to stand out and be genuine about who they are.

Q: WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WOULD LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR REMOVAL FROM THE CHEERLEADER TEAM.

A: I would like individuals to realize it wasn't necessary to focus on my abilities nor my capacity to be on the team. Yet, when you are adequately strong to contradict some common norms to seek fair treatment you must be ready for the result of risking your fantasies.

The Effect of HEALTH & WELLNESS ON RELATIONSHIPS

Hello, my name is David Wyley Long, a community focused social worker who resides in Nashville, Tennessee. I invite you on my journey in finding a loving relationship with a partner. For the past two issues, I have discussed what love means to me, and how I have had successes and many failures in finding my forever. I welcome all comments via an email (davidwyleylong@gmail. com) or find me on Facebook under my name. This issue I will explore how health and wellness impacts my quest.

I will open this article with a direct question: Does optimal health and wellness require a loving relationship? Does the stress of a relationship including the good and bad bring someone greater joy? This answer is subjective, as I have interviewed many people from the single and coupled point of view, and I have concluded it is not a

simple answer. Many people believe the overall experience of love and coupling, the pros and cons will be varied, Overall, the coupled individuals believe their lives are better. Within the many interviews with single people, they didn’t believe their lives were lacking due to their relationship status. Many were defiant that many other things including jobs, family and friends are more important than finding love. I decided to take a deeper dive into the world of love in regard to health and wellness.

To begin, let’s center our thoughts on the basics of love. The central and core benefits of being in a relationship includes the power of belonging to someone, a life accountability partner, as well financial, and emotional support system. For argument's sake, I am only viewing healthy and loving relationships. I respect that all

relationships are built differently, and the two (or three) people engaged within the relationship might desire something more or less from their partner. Because of those two amazing qualities that a partner can be to your life and more, the core health and wellness benefit is intimacy.

I personally believe intimacy is essential in a relationship because it forms a basis for connection and communication. It ensures that each person feels understood, allows them to be themselves, and ensures that each person gets the care and comfort that they need. With the wicked world we currently live in, with the daily struggles of life, this premium quality is deeper than a one-night stand. Your life can be elevated with the right person, and the right emotions and feelings after being intimate with someone. But, does the person who gives you that energy, fulfillment and power equate to increased love, health and wellness? I think so. I know so. I believe so.

So, how do singles survive, and how do single people thrive? Studies have shown the validity of independence for singles that rivals the beauty of a relationship. While both statuses of singled or coupled can be complete and full, I often wonder about the age factor in determining the worth of being single. As a respectful middleaged man of 45 years young, I know that the time is creeping up on me, to be with someone, and the shifting dynamics of having someone to enrich my life. I have done the single road for quite some time and desire a deeper meaning of love and romance. I believe you can’t do this alone, and when you are

with someone, for them to listen, laugh, and learn with you, your health and wellness outcomes increase with time. My inner circle of friends and family currently fills this cup, but I think the partner would overfill it with everything I need in life.

So, the cliché statement of “You gotta love yourself before you can love someone else.” Let’s simmer on this statement. What is love? How does one love himself? What is the test to know if you can love yourself more? What does it mean to show and receive love? Yes, we get it (or should) from our parents, siblings, and family as we grow up. It is the foundation of how we love and show love. However, if a person doesn’t feel loved growing up, their vision of love is mired and can be problematic in showing the same love to a potential partner. So, I disagree with that statement. I respect it but disagree with it. I value myself and I have plenty of self-esteem. But, I also think my love for myself is independent of what I can give. I can only give myself the love I desire, and the love from someone else is different.

In conclusion, this search is not easy. Meeting strangers, and even people in the community I work in, has been tough. People do not desire relationships, and the sex positive movement has increased the ability to be more open and fluid. While I believe someone is out there looking for me, as I look for them, I often wonder what is taking them so long. But, I leave you with a simple statement: What is yours, will be yours. I will keep you updated on my love journey. My health and wellness depend on it.

HEALTH IS WEALTH

When you think about the word "health," which area of health immediately comes to mind? Do you find that you instantly think about your physical and mental health?

How often do you consider your sexual, spiritual, social, occupational, or financial health? Believe it or not, when exploring our "health and wellness" needs, we should view wellness from a "whole health" lens. We are multidimensional individuals involved in a plethora of fascinating ventures. Therefore, it should not be surprising that, as multidimensional individuals, our focus should also be multidimensional when we address wellness. Attention to our "whole" health can potentially increase our overall quality of life and save us money.

PHYSICAL & PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH

It is not uncommon to hear people complain about the cost of gym memberships, healthy eating, and psychotherapy. Yes, these experiences cost money and we often pay more in the beginning to adopt a healthier lifestyle. However, the cost of wellness will still be significantly less than the cost of treating and recovering from an illness. How much money do you spend

monthly on medications to treat high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, depression, anxiety, obesity, etc.? As you calculate this cost, include all the supplemental expenses associated with each condition. Now compare the price of a gym membership (actually, if we’re serious about fitness, there are thousands of FREE workout videos on YouTube), purchasing healthier food options, and going to therapy (side note: therapy is often cheaper than we think because of co-pay options, sliding fee scales, university counseling and psychological services centers, and church ministries that provide psychotherapy services, not just spiritual counseling). Which options feel most sustainable and will add to your desired quality of life?

As you reflect, I would also invite you to place a monetary value on each time you were unable to spend time with family and friends, engage in beloved hobbies, go to work or church, travel, attend concerts or other events (insert all the things you love but missed) because of a physical or psychological ailment. When we evaluate the cost of the things we cannot do because of physical or psychological illnesses, we often find that we have paid too great of an expense. Invest in your physical and mental health. Yes, you will pay more initially, but research supports healthy eating and exercise as treatment for several physical and psychological conditions. Talk to your therapist and physician to learn more.

SOCIAL HEALTH

Social health relates to our ability to create and nurture meaningful connections with

others. As such, since we are social beings, social health is also essential to wellness. Whether healthy or unhealthy, our connections to others may intentionally or unintentionally influence how we think, feel, and act. Take a moment and evaluate the health of your social relationships. Grab a notepad and write down the names of at least four people you spend most of your time. Leave space under their names to write down how you feel and what you do when you are with them. How does spending time with these individuals help you to grow and thrive as a person? What do you notice in this moment as you think about these people and your experiences together?

Are you being poured into as much as you pour? Do you feel empowered, encouraged, energized, and elated after spending time with folks in your social circle? If not, it may be necessary to consider whether limiting the time spent with certain people will result in greater social health outcomes.

SEXUAL HEALTH

Let’s talk about SEX, baby! Sexual health refers to savoring a gratifying sexual and intimate life, experiencing positive sexual or romantic relationships, feeling safe and encouraged to explore sexual delights, and maintaining a healthier body. With whom, how often, and how you give and receive pleasure (or pain--wink!) matters. Are you engaging in safe sex behaviors? Are you enjoying your sexual practices and with whom you practice? If you’re not sexually fulfilled or feel sex with your partner is a chore, it is time to have a difficult but necessary conversation with your partner(s) about spicing

things up in the bedroom or wherever you play. Sex should be stress relieving, not stressful. So, speak to your partners about what you enjoy and dislike, what feels safe or creates anxiety, and new practices you would like to experience. Also, talk to your physician about good sexual practices, strategies for protecting yourself, and tips to improve overall sexual health. If you feel unsafe talking to your physician about your sexual health, it may be time to find a new physician. You should feel safe to bring your whole self into the medical space without fear of judgment.

The quality and longevity of your life depends on your willingness to commit to caring for your “whole health,” not just mind, body, and spirit. If caring for the whole self feels overwhelming or you struggle to know where to start, consider working with a health coach or therapist who can guide the first and next steps. Remember, health extends beyond physical, psychological, and sexual health. Create time in your busy schedule to explore wellness in as many relevant domains as possible (e.g., spiritual, financial, social, professional, etc.).

Your future self will thank you later for investing in YOU! Keep in mind prevention costs less than intervention!

THE TRUTH ABOUT GENDER AFFIRMING CARE

In case you haven’t heard there has been a record number of anti-LGBTQ+ policies introduced and implemented in the last year- and they are having a negative impact on LGBTQ young people’s mental health. However, laws that protect LGBTQ young people from dangerous and discredited practice of conversion therapy made them feel better.

This brings us to support and share the truth about gender affirming care! Genderaffirming care is essential because it improves the mental and physical well-being of transgender and gender-diverse individuals. Here are several reasons why it is crucial: genderaffirming care is essential because it promotes mental and physical well-being, reduces discrimination and stigma, improves overall quality of life, and upholds the fundamental human rights of transgender and gender-diverse individuals. It is a critical component of healthcare that supports individuals in living authentically and in good health.

MENTAL HEALTH

Gender dysphoria, the distress experienced due to incongruence between one's gender identity and assigned sex at birth, can lead to severe mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Gender-affirming care, which may include hormone therapy or gender-affirming surgeries, can alleviate dysphoria and improve mental health outcomes.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Access to gender-affirming care allows transgender individuals to align their physical appearance with their gender identity. This alignment can lead to improved self-esteem, body satisfaction, and overall quality of life.

REDUCING STIGMA

Discrimination and social stigma against transgender and gender-diverse individuals are significant sources of stress and mental health challenges. Gender-affirming care can help individuals feel more accepted and supported, reducing the negative effects of stigma.

LOWER RISK BEHAVIORS

Transgender individuals who do not have access to gender-

affirming care may resort to risky practices, such as unmonitored hormone use or self-performed surgeries, which can lead to serious health complications. Proper medical supervision and care reduces these risks.

PHYSICAL HEALTH

Gender-affirming care can have positive effects on physical health. For instance, hormone therapy can reduce the risk of certain health issues associated with one's assigned sex at birth and improve overall well-being.

LEGAL AND SOCIAL RECOGNITION

Gender-affirming care often plays a role in obtaining legal recognition of one's gender identity, such as changing one's name and gender marker on official documents. This recognition is crucial for accessing legal rights, protection from discrimination, and full participation in society.

IMPROVED RELATIONSHIPS

When individuals can align their gender presentation with their identity, it can lead to

more positive and authentic relationships with family, friends, and partners.

LOWER HEALTHCARE DISPARITIES

Transgender individuals often face healthcare disparities, including discrimination from healthcare providers. Genderaffirming care can help bridge this gap and ensure that transgender people receive appropriate medical care.

SUICIDE PREVENTION

Transgender individuals, especially youth, are at a higher risk of suicide due to discrimination and mental health struggles. Gender-affirming care is a critical tool in suicide prevention by addressing the underlying causes of distress.

HUMAN RIGHTS

Access to gender-affirming care is a matter of human rights and dignity. It ensures that transgender and gender-diverse individuals can live authentic lives, free from discrimination and barriers to healthcare.
