CONGRATULATIONS from The Reverend Professor Elizabeth Stuart, Vice-Chancellor

I wish to extend my congratulations to you as we honour your success at the University of Winchester. You completed your final year of study with us during the most extraordinary time. I thank you for your understanding and your flexibility, alongside your lecturers, in adapting overnight to new measures and ways of learning. I am in awe of your resilience. I am also proud of how our University community pulled together in response to the pandemic, supporting each other and the local community. Many of our students and staff volunteered in various capacities during the pandemic and some served on the front line. We hope your lives have been enriched by the time you have spent with us, and you leave the University of Winchester with the knowledge, wisdom and strength to make a real difference in the world. As you know, we are the University for Sustainability and Social Justice and making a difference is key to what we do here at Winchester. We have aligned our Strategic Vision 2020-2030 with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and recently we placed second in the UK for Quality Education (SDG 4)*. We also placed in the top 100 universities worldwide for our work in reducing inequalities** and we continue our research within local and global communities to enhance social mobility, opportunities for under-represented groups and peacebuilding. We are taking radical action to reduce our environmental impact and combat the climate emergency, including our pledge to be carbon neutral by 2025. We are set to become one of the lowest carbon emitting universities in the UK, thanks in large part to a multi-million pound grant enabling us to implement a programme which will save over 500 tonnes of carbon dioxide and 2,702,353 kWh – the equivalent of nearly 250 million smartphones charged – a year. As you embrace the next chapter in your journey, we hope you continue to take action to transform our world for the better through your personal and professional endeavours. We hope that your time with us has given you the skills, confidence and ambition to aim high when it comes to employment. Finally, please remember you are now a member of the Winton Club – our alumni community of over 35,000 Winchester graduates spanning 90 countries around the world. Please do keep in touch with us to inspire others with your successes and stay involved through alumni activities. Together, we are Winchester. I am honoured to celebrate your Graduation with you, along with your family and friends. I wish you every success and happiness for the future.

THE REVEREND PROFESSOR ELIZABETH STUART, VICE-CHANCELLOR

SUPPORT OUR CHOSEN CHARITIES Each year at Graduation, we take the opportunity to give back to communities who need our help. This year, we are delighted to be supporting three inspiring charities who are changing lives both in the UK and overseas. The donations received during Graduation will be equally divided between the following charities:

WINCHESTER HOSPICE CHARITY The new Winchester Hospice on the Royal Hampshire County Hospital site will provide specialist palliative care to patients from this autumn. This wonderful new facility will care for those at the end of their lives to live the remainder of their days with dignity, with their pain managed effectively and surrounded by their loved ones. Your donation supports the purchase of specialist equipment urgently needed to create a comfortable and home-like environment such as the Montcalm Ook Snow ALL bed, also known as a ‘cuddle bed’, a specialist bed that can widen to a double bed enabling a patient’s loved ones to provide much-needed comfort and quality time together. VACCINAID: UNICEF – GIVE THE WORLD A SHOT The pandemic hit the UK hard but we are thankful to witness the impact of the vaccine rollout now that all adults have had the opportunity to receive at least one dose. However, access to vaccines globally has not been equal so VaccinAid is working to ensure all countries have vaccine supply. Please donate and help UNICEF deliver two billion vaccines as well as millions

of treatments around the world this year. Your donation will help struggling health services get back on their feet, as well as help millions of children go back to school, while protecting the most at-risk people. WINCHESTER FIRST STAR – OPENING THE DOOR TO ASPIRATIONS FOR LOOKED-AFTER CHILDREN The University of Winchester is passionate about widening access to higher education. This summer, we are launching First Star Scholars, a holistic programme providing educational support and life skills for looked-after young people. There are a record number of children in care in the UK, with figures showing that 90 young people enter the care system every day. Many care leavers struggle to establish a stable home-life, and career and outcomes for these young people are known to be poor. Covid has disrupted our lives and it is the most vulnerable groups for whom the impact will be felt most severely, this includes looked-after children. First Star provides the support network necessary to offer reassurance and security for these vulnerable children, helping to rebuild their confidence during these challenging times.

To donate, please text WINCHESTER + your donation amount (up to £20) to 70460 To donate £10 please text WINCHESTER10 to 70460 To donate £20 please text WINCHESTER20 to 70460 Multiple texts may be sent. Texts cost the value of your donation plus one standard rate message and you’ll be opting in to hear more about our work and fundraising via telephone and SMS. GRADUATION | CLASS OF 2020 | University of Winchester

COAT OF ARMS The heraldic design work of the University of Winchester’s Coat of Arms was undertaken by The College of Arms in London, the official repository of the coats of arms and pedigrees of English, Welsh, Northern Irish and Commonwealth institutions, families and their descendants.

The Grant of Arms to the University of Winchester is derived principally from the Arms granted to King Alfred the Great, who chose Winchester as the capital of his Kingdom of Wessex. The University has made associations with King Alfred for many years; one of the campus quarters is currently named after King Alfred as was the institution itself from 1928-2004. When heralds granted King Alfred Arms in the fifteenth century, it consisted of almost exactly the design reflected in the chequered shield and black chief seen here in the University’s Arms. The incorporation of two lions develops directly from the Arms of the City of Winchester. Meanwhile an open book is traditionally used by symbol heralds to signify a place of learning. On either side of the Coat of Arms are the supporters. White Hampshire hogs, each with a red rose in its mouth, come from the County Arms of Hampshire and also in those of William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester and founder of both Winchester College and New College, Oxford. Above the helm, or helmet, is the crest – the white three-towered castle from the City of Winchester’s Arms.

The three Saxon crowns around the towers allude to Winchester’s history as a Saxon capital city and place of coronation, while the colour red connects to the red shield used in the Arms of Winchester’s Bishopric. Traditionally, the colour white represents the purity of Christ and red the blood that He spilled for humanity’s redemption, reflecting the Anglican Foundation of the University and the ancient Christian tradition of learning in this city. The University motto is ‘wisdom ond lar’. This Old English text can be translated to ‘wisdom and knowledge’. It was inspired by the preface of King Alfred’s translation of Pope Gregory the Great’s Regula Pastoralis, which frequently refers to both wisdom and knowledge. Alfred’s translation of Regula Pastoralis was instrumental in his pursuit to improve education in Anglo-Saxon England. Recently, the Coat of Arms was the inspiration for the new University logo to underpin the rich heritage of our contemporary University and city.
