THE CREDIT BINGE

Unbridled credit has killed the dream of home ownership for many Bahamians, especially civil servants.

The initial results from government’s low-cost land programme underscore just how serious the problem is.

Of 60 applications to buy serviced lots at Sunset Close for a low price of $15,000, only nine people – 15% - qualified for a loan from the Bahamas Mortgage Corporation.

Ouch!

The Mortgage Corporation is considered a flexible lender, so this gives us an idea of the depth of the problem.

Romauld Ferreira, the minister of housing, said many Bahamians, especially those who signed off on payroll deductions, have been seduced by consumer credit and predatory lending.

This is true, but people are free to make their own choices.

Another side to this sad saga is successive governments facilitated the credit binge through salary deductions with civil servants maxing out on the 75% cap.

The bank ceiling for customer loan to debt service ratio is typically 45 percent. This is the level of cash available for debt servicing on interest and principal payments.

Imagine then trying to buy groceries and pay rent and utilities and, in many cases, support children and so on when 75 percent of your salary is automatically deducted every week? How on earth will anyone be able keep up with day to day expenses while servicing a mortgage?

Fortunately, the Central Bank finally has the green light to establish a credit bureau, so lenders will have access to an applicant’s credit worthiness. However, it will take one or two years to build the data base.

He branded consumer debt and predatory lending by some commercial banks as “a huge issue,” saying a lot of Bahamians have been “seduced into loans that are unnecessary, particularly Baha-

What child didn’t have a piggy bank? A weekly allowance – received in exchange for chores – was faithfully deposited into the pig’s belly. The piggy bank was weighed, shaken, the coins taken out and counted until that magical day when enough had accumulated to buy some object of desire.

This was the first lesson in fiscal discipline.

GETTING IT RIGHT If parents are not doing it, fiscal discipline should be taught in our schools.

AS hard as it may be for some to believe, indoor plants are grown and chosen for their ease of maintenance. They are usually of the tropical variety of plants, those that are able to survive in low light conditions and generally take just the basic amount of attention to keep them going.

So as you can see, there really is no reason why you shouldn’t go out and get yourself an indoor plant.

HOW TO GROW YOUR HOUSE PLANTS: As mentioned indoor plants are generally chosen to make life easy on its owners.
