RELIGIOUS NEWS, STORIES AND CHURCH EVENTS

Who has come? I

N our liturgical tradition the four weeks prior to Christmas was the season of Advent, which means “coming”. This was a time of preparation, expectation, and anticipation. Who has come? One answer could be our family members who live abroad and managed to come home for Christmas. The festive decorations, baking, shopping and general excitement were all aspects related to the holiday season. We look forward to creating new memories to add to our family albums. Another answer can be the friends who came to hand gifts through the door, accept a piece of cake or admire the Christmas tree through the window. Our Zoom and WhatsApp calls were a wonderful time to speak words of gratitude to those who have been kind, helpful and thoughtful this year. Making the time for even this kind of fellowship is a true blessing if the conversation is inspiring and uplifting. More than preparing our homes, however, we engaged in spiritual exercises which prepared our hearts to receive our Saviour, Jesus Christ. He has come as a newborn baby, to live and grow as we do, then to suffer and die. His suffering is not because of sin, or poor choices; rather it is to take our place, pay our price, and defeat death by rising to new life. Our Messiah also comes to enable us to know God in a more intimate way. We meet God face to face in the pages of Holy Scripture as our shepherd, our living water, bread of life, bright morning star. We hear sermons and teaching, witness healings and deliverances, experience the power and presence of God in our lives. Because of this coming, our role is defined for us as children of God who reveal God’s love in the world. We are to come to one another in the same Spirit of the Word made flesh. In the words of St.

...we need to go in search of the person that God is calling us to be...

Paul, we see an image of Christ in action: “We were gentle among you. Like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but our own selves, because you have become very dear to us….As you know, we dealt with you like a father with his children, urging and encouraging you and pleading that you lead a life worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory,” (1 Thessalonians 2:7-12 NRSV). Our Lord’s coming makes us eligible to come into our own as whole human beings, and to come to our own people with a message of hope and love. This

birth of Our Lord is a wonderful reminder that we are not alone in our sin and suffering, that God loves us and offers us a way back into the light. The holy family’s flight to Egypt and the death of the holy innocents throw a shadow on the quiet nativity scenes that we find in religious art. God has come to be with us because life involves incidents like the recent tragic car crashes, suicide, murders and all the COVID-19 and other deaths that have our nation in shock. God is still with us today in the midst of all of this. For those of us who find ourselves in an emotional or spiritual desert, there is comfort to be gained in the biblical revelation that even the rugged terrain of the desert brings forth fascinating fresh blossoms, so different from those in the more fertile ground. In times of great distress, we are called to journey deep beneath the surface of intellectual analysis towards the strange beauty of spiritual insight. God comforts us if we allow ourselves to be consoled by the Holy Spirit. Can you throw yourself into God’s loving arms and weep your heart out? Can you believe that your Saviour has suffered even more for you? Will you rest your weary soul in the love of those who are praying for you? Does Emmanuel meaning “God with us” ring true for you? When we are ready and able to reflect on our experience, we find that there are streams of healing, rivers of rage and other subterranean forces flowing in the deep places of the self, and that we need to go in search of the person that God is calling us to be, as a result. Are you ready to look at life from a different perspective this Christmas and New Year? How much of the person “on the surface” do you really want to remain? What changes are you prepared to make?

Perhaps the Lord has come to you in a special way to give you the courage you need to confront some issues that are long overdue: 1. How kind would it be to speak the truth in love to someone who does not want to hear the truth no matter what spirit it was spoken in? Yet, how unkind would you be to yourself to just keep it all on the inside even if you really needed to talk it through? 2. Is it time to seek counsel for the healing of hurts from your past, unresolved issues that provoke angry outbursts, abusive tendencies, addictions and anything else that is destroying your happiness and that of those around you? 3. Are you being made ready to surrender your life to God and be led by the Holy Spirit as you make one decision after the next? Jesus Christ has come to save us from ourselves and the worship of false and deceitful gods. Ask Him into the stable of your heart and watch the slow transformation that only God can bring, making this your best year ever, no matter what it brings. • Rev Angela Palacious, a motivational speaker and author of several devotional books, is an Anglican priest. Ethnee Nottage, CYM adviser, said despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the members thought it fitting to launch an appeal that would help bring cheer to the children at the home and assist with their daily needs. With the support of the congregation of SMAC, the organisation was able to collect the items.

“It was the direction that I received after spending time with the Lord and seeking his leading in my life.”

Christians count their blessings in a difficult year BY JEFFARAH GIBSON | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | JGIBSON@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET

T

HIS YEAR turned out to be the kind of year no one expected. The still ongoing COVID-19 pandemic took many lives, forced people to live isolated in their homes, changed the way we interact, work, shop, socialise, and even worship. Many may have made it through the year not having contracted the virus, but were faced with the emotional strain of being isolated from family and friends. Others had to face having their livelihoods being taken away; being laid off from their jobs. While 2020 has been one of the most unexpected and challenging years in memory for many, some Christians said looking back on all that has happened this year, they still feel blessed and can say good fortune has followed them. “Even if you were not directly impacted by the pandemic by contracting COVID-19 or losing a job, the year

was tough for us all being in lockdown. But despite that I still saw the hand of God working in my life,” said Roy Brown. “My relationship with God has blossomed over this time. I got deeper with Him and that is an amazing thing and one of the best things that has happened to me this year.” For Ann Farrington, 2020 blessed her in way she couldn’t have imagined. During the lockdowns at the start of the pandemic, she reconnected with a former love interest. “We had lots of time to talk since no one could go anywhere. And during that time we built a deeper bond and grew in a level of intimacy that has been unmatched. Now we are exploring the possibility of marriage and having kids. This is one of the most beautiful things that happened to me this year and I am grateful that God has restored this relationship,” she said.

As for Grand Bahama native Markel Williams, she said she has seen God open doors for new opportunities for her, specifically with her moringa business. She makes products from the moringa plant. “I started last year, 2019, making moringa bush tea that helped with so many different ailments such as bloating, high blood pressure, diabetes, the common cold and flu, just to name a few. This year, while we were on lockdown, it gave me a lot of time to think of new ideas to expand my moringa business and Markel Will Ultd was birthed. Therefore, I thought about moringa soaps and so I made them and then I added other flavours as I progressed: moringa with turmeric, moringa with charcoal, moringa with oats, moringa with carrot, and moringa with aloe. Locals started to patronise my small business and gave their honest reviews on how the soaps benefited them. All of this motivated me to continue and

I knew it was only by Father’s grace, mercy and provision that all of this was made possible,” she said. “I am very grateful for the ways the Lord has provided for me and my family and I plan to continue to produce and serve my community with the help of my Heavenly Father.” This year was also special for 16-yearold Maria Taylor, who said she received the good news of being accepted into three colleges so far. “I am awaiting to hear back from a few others. I am hoping to begin my college education after graduation in the June 2021. God has still been good,” she said. As for Crystal Kemp, she said God has directed her towards a new interest that she hopes will blossom into profitable business. “It was the direction that I received after spending time with the Lord and seeking his leading in my life,” she said.
