IN MIDST OF PANDEMIC, BELIEVERS FIND ALTERNATIVES TO WATCH NIGHT SERVICE By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net

T

HE fourth wave of the COVID19 pandemic in the Bahamas has not only rained down on the Junkanoo parades and put a damper on New Year’s Eve festivities, but it is also impacting the Christian tradition of attending watch night services in church on Friday night. Some Bahamians said out of caution they may simply abandon the tradition and instead opt for more creative ways to cross over into the new year while still putting a focus on their faith. Emile Darling, a Baptist faithful who looks forward to watch night service every year and has never missed one in recent years, said she is sitting this one out. “Watch night service is truly a meaningful one to me and my family. It’s through this service I can usher in the new year and I always feel even more grounded by attending. However, I am more concerned about the spread of

this new variant. So while I have to miss church this year, I prefer being safe,” she said. Ms Darling said streaming her church’s virtual watch night service is not an option for her, as she is not tech savvy and does not have any social media accounts. “I am middle-aged so I don’t bother with the computer and smart phones. Those things are beyond my age, so to speak. So I will settle for maybe tuning in to Christian programme or maybe just reading my Bible and praying,” she told Tribune Religion. Lawrence Johnson, a Catholic, said he hasn’t been attending church as often as he would like. However, he intends to stream his church’s virtual service this New Year’s Eve. “Thank God that we have technology at a time like this. There are just so many things happening and it’s getting hard to keep up. Every time you look, there is one new variant stopping our way of life. But I do partake in church through a live stream. Maybe next

year things would have settled and be different,” he said. For Meredith Adderley, her family will be taking a different approach. Instead of attending the watch night services they will gather for a time of prayer as a family unit. “Now may not be the best time to gather in a crowd

at a church so we decided to gather as a family – my immediate family that is. We will most certainly take some time out to pray because all have had such a challenging year. Then we will sing praises to God for how far he has brought us,” she said. Meredith said she is looking forward to worshiping

this way as it allows for much more intimacy with her loved ones. “We need to be together and speak into the life of one another. So I encourage people who may not be going to church because they are being cautious to maybe gather together in small groups, maybe five persons, and do some Bible

study, talk to them and find out if there is anything going on their life that you can pray for,” she said. Many local religious leaders will be using creative means and technology to host watch night services and midnight mass in order to adhere to COVID-19 social distancing protocols. Though we are currently in the fourth wave of the pandemic, churches will function as normal provided they adhere to all health protocols. A watch night service is a late-night Christian church service. In many different Christian traditions, such as those of Methodists, Catholics, Lutherans, Anglicans, Baptists, Adventists and Reformed Christians, watch night services are held late on New Year's Eve, which is the seventh day of Christmastide. This provides the opportunity for Christians to review the year that has passed and make confession, and then prepare for the year ahead by praying and resolving. The services often include singing, praying, exhorting, preaching, and Holy Communion.

’YOUNG PEOPLE ARE THE CHURCH OF TODAY’

- Anglican Diocesan Youth Department celebrates 50th anniversary By Tiffany Grant THE Anglican Diocesan Youth Department will celebrate its 50th anniversary on September 30, 2022, under the theme “Youth with a Purpose: Courageously Carrying-Out Christ’s Commission.” To mark its golden anniversary, the youth department has planned a number of activities, such as an outreach project, a speech competition, a drive-in youth rally and an awards ceremony. Tiffany Hall-Sweeting, a diocesan youth officer who has worked in the department for 16 years, said that the youth department has grown over the years - not just in membership, but it has grown in the programmes and events it offers. One such programme is the annual youth leaders training course. “One of the things that stands out most for me is our training of leaders, whom we train based upon what is happening culturally in our country. We seek to equip them to deal with the various issues that we face in our church, in the nation and in the world,” said Mrs Hall-Sweeting. Rev Chitan Thompson, an Anglican priest of three years, worked with the Diocesan Youth Department (DYD) during her years as a young layperson. She was so involved with the youth department that she worked on the committee which planned youth month activities and was once youth representative at the Diocesan Synod, the annual general meeting of the Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. She said the youth department has helped her to learn skills which are useful in the ordained ministry. “I am excited to celebrate with the DYD. I am honoured to be a product of its mission and ministry in our diocese,” said Rev Thompson. “I know the pandemic paused some plans, but

ANGLICAN youth leaders and junior youth leaders convened for a planning session in 2019. new ones were birthed. I pray for the DYD's future growth and development, trusting God that the good work which was begun will continue.” The Diocesan Youth Department can boast of many successes over the past 50 years. These include the introduction of a track meet in October 2005, which is a highly-anticipated event across the diocese, where the various youth departments in the Anglican churches get to show off their athletic prowess by competing in various events.

Another notable achievement are the Archdeaconry Jamborees, which occur every two years. The diocese is divided into archdeaconries (or regions) – the East Central Bahamas, the Northern Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos and Southern Bahamas and the West Central Bahamas. During the jamboree, all young church members convene in archdeaconries for a weekend of teaching, fellowship and fun. Owing to financial constraints and COVID-19, the jamborees have not been

held for the past few years, but Anglican officials hope they will come on stream again. Every five years, the department puts on a Youth Conclave, which is another gathering of young people from across the diocese for a week of seminars and training. Remaining relevant is vital when dealing with young people. The youth department stays on the cutting edge of youth issues by sponsoring training on such topics as bullying, child abuse and how to prepare young people

for going off to college. Also, the youth department launched its Youth Help Hotline on May 1 of this year. The hotline came about after the department conducted a survey during the pandemic. As a result of responses received, it was decided that a hotline would help the young people to work through their issues. “The hotline is available to young people of all ages and all denominations, and will accept calls from anyone of any age who calls in. It is moving us in the direction of sharing in a compassionate and caring ministry, allowing us to reach out to the young people of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands who are hurting,” said Mrs Hall-Sweeting. Retaining young people for the church is a challenge faced by many denominations. Mrs Hall-Sweeting said that the aim should be not only to retain the youth, but to get them to be active in the leadership of the church. “Young people want to feel a part of what is happening. They want to be a part of the church, so in an effort of retaining them, I would recommend getting them more involved. Give them something to do. Let them put their creative juices to work for their betterment, the betterment of the church and congregation as well. We have to realise that young people are not just the church of tomorrow, they are the church of today,” she said. Emphasis on youth ministry is of great importance for the advancement and longevity of the church. Mrs Hall-Sweeting said it is for this reason that the diocese gives youth ministry top priority. “For your church to pump resources into a department that has been around for 50 years speaks volumes of the focus of the church and its commitment to young people. I must say that since my appointment as Diocesan Youth

Officer eight years ago, all the bishops have been very supportive of the Diocesan Youth Department. They continue to look forward to the various programmes and events sponsored by the department,” said Mrs Hall-Sweeting. “All that is needed is for the parishes to support youth ministry, which, thank God, is what our parishes have been doing.” The Rt Rev Laish Boyd, Bishop of the Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, agrees that youth ministry is very important and that the youth department is a formational ministry in the diocese. “If you think of the youth department, ministering to primary school children, teenagers and young adults, that is the period when they are being formed as adults. We need to be working with them, engaging them at their level, dealing with their issues, occupying them in wholesome activities, keeping them in and around the church, so they would have that firm foundation. When they are in their formational period of life, we can be impacting them and shaping them for Christ,” said Bishop Boyd. Bishop Boyd extended his congratulations to the Diocesan Youth Department as it celebrates 50 years of ministry. “I want to offer heartiest congratulations to Youth Director Hall-Sweeting and to the Anglican Diocesan Youth Department. We are proud of the youth department. The youth department has done extremely well, and this golden anniversary should be observed because it is a testament to what God has done in us and through us as a church, over all these years. To God be the glory, great things He hath done,” he said.

What a year!

ere we are again, a year older and much wiser about COVID-19. Who would thought that we would have gone through what we have been through this year? So many had high hopes that 2021 was going to be a perfectly different year to 2020. What will this new year bring? We are all completely in the dark. We have no idea what will transpire but we can trust that God will be with us, no matter what happens. Let us resolve together that we will enter this new year with a new approach if any of the following are foreign to our past attitude: We are going to ask God to be the source of, and object of, of our deepest love. All other loves can be added to different degrees after. We are going to ask God to heal us from all the hurts of the past, working with professional and prayer counsellors to make it a reality. We are going to ask Jesus to help us to forgive

REV ANGELA C BOSFIELD PALACIOUS MEDITATION ourselves for all mistakes in the past. We are going to ask the Holy Spirit to help us to ask for forgiveness from others and seek to make restitution where appropriate. We are going to find time each day to pray and worship. We are going to bring our best effort to our families to love, care and be kind. We are going to bring integrity to our work so that

we become a valuable team player. We are to work on making healthy choices when it comes to loving ourselves and caring for our bodies. We will help those in need in any way possible.

• We will be grateful for the gift of life and live it to please God. You may have any number of resolutions, promises, pledges or plans for 2022. You may be quite serious about the change you may wish to accomplish. Hopefully,

you will get past February and not allow them to be good intentions that never materialized. Which of your New Year’s resolutions were you successful at realising? You may be very motivated, organized and disciplined. You may be the kind of

person who puts your mind to something and will see it through to the end. You may have an amazing attitude to passionately pursuing your purpose. Or maybe this is not you at all. You may be a procrastinator par excellence. Ambitious in your bed but once your feet touch the floor, they drag through the day. This is where the Holy Spirit will empower and inspire you to exhibit courage and determination when fear would have paralysed you previously. You become a walking miracle to those who knew you prior to transformation. Wherever you find yourself on the spectrum, may this be your best New Year’s ever. • Rev Angela Palacious, a motivational speaker and author of several devotional books, is an Anglican priest. RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN FIGHT AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE By TOBIAS MÜLLER Lecturer in Politics and International Studies, University of Cambridge and Esra ÖzyürekProfessor of Abrahamic Faiths and Shared Values, University of Cambridge (THE CONVERSATION) – The threat of climate change signals a “code red for humanity”, and we are running out of time to transition away from carbon and prevent catastrophic planetary warming. Our best chance is to convince existing organisations with financial, political and social power to pioneer drastic change. Faith communities – to which four billion people worldwide belong, with an economic value of over £900 billion (£676 billion) in the US alone – might be the force we need. When US President John Biden met Pope Francis on October 29, climate change was a focus of their discussion. Later that day, the pope spoke on BBC Radio 4’s Thought for the Day strand on the Today programme to demand “radical decisions” from world leaders on climate. He warned that the interlinking crises of the pandemic and climate change have created “a perfect storm” about to cause havoc to human civilisation. Before the COP26 UN climate conference took place in Glasgow, 40 religious leaders also met in the Vatican to make an unprecedented plea for addressing the climate crisis. “If one nation sinks, we all sink”, said Rajwant Singh, a Sikh leader from Washington DC. And the Grand Imam Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb of the Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo, Egypt, an institution usually not known for its progressive politics, called on young Muslims “to be ready to fight against any

action that damages the environment”. Clearly, many faith leaders recognise that climate action has become a sacred duty. The skyrocketing number of books on ecotheologies show that commitment to climate action has entered the mainstream of most religions. The research that we’ve done suggests that, by leveraging their massive influence, these groups can help the world take significant steps towards averting climate catastrophe. Taking action Recent climate protests have seen priests, rabbis and imams join interfaith groups within radical climate movements such as Extinction Rebellion (XR). These leaders block roads and are arrested in full religious garb, invoking the tradition of religious civil disobedience pioneered by figures like Martin Luther King who was arrested 29 times during his leadership of the US civil rights movement. Young people of faith, in particular, are not satisfied with the lack of action from political leaders. Young Christian climate activists entered Glasgow for COP26 after a 1,200-mile pilgrimage from Cornwall, urging churches along the way to step up climate action. A member of XR Pilgrims, a multi-faith group, explained that “we have a spiritual duty of care to those who are less fortunate than us”. One of the most prominent young climate activists, 24-year-old Vanessa Nakate, describes herself as a “born again Christian and climate activist” in that order. She describes her activism as informed by her faith, particularly the biblical command to care for the Earth. In the wake of COP26, she demanded that leaders set up a compensation fund for the destruction

the climate crisis is already causing across Africa. Bridging the gap These grassroots actions on climate are already bearing fruit. On October 26, representatives from several thousand faith groups across the world announced that they would divest £3.1 billion ($4.2 billion) of investments in fossil fuels – the largest ever faith-driven divestment movement. When Tobias conducted research on how people of faith mobilise for climate action in 2020, he witnessed how Muslim and non-Muslim members of XR from Kenya, Gambia and the UK formed an unusual alliance to stop the development of a highly environmentally destructive luxury tourist resort in Nairobi National Park. Now, more faith groups need to follow these examples by developing ambitious plans to challenge the climate crisis. This could begin with turning houses of worship into models of sustainability. An example is the Cambridge Central Mosque. Claiming to be Europe’s first fully eco-friendly mosque, its carbon footprint is nearly zero thanks to its heat pumps, LED lights and rainwater toilet flushes. Another is the Lutheran church of HessenNassau in Germany, which aims to cover all available roof space of its more than 2,000 church buildings with solar panels to generate its own electricity. We believe that scientists could play a key role in supporting this transition. As Tobias wrote recently in an essay for Nature, by establishing dialogue between scientists and faith groups we can help convince even the most conservative minds of the reality of the climate crisis. The future But these steps alone are not enough. As the

MANY religious leaders at COP26 protested against climate inaction.

pope suggested to BBC listeners, religious groups must acknowledge that our profit-oriented economy is making our planet uninhabitable. Faith communities across the world together make up an industry that is bigger than most national economies. Through speaking the truth about the state of the planet and exercising uncompromising financial, social and political pressure

on governments and corporations, they can shift the balance towards averting the devastation of all we hold sacred on Earth. These communities have the resources and the resilience, but above all the moral responsibility, to do that. In light of the many times they have failed to stand up for justice and human dignity, religions could win back their place at the

forefront of a struggle that will define the future of humanity. To rephrase a famous slogan, there are no religions on a dead planet. • This article is republished from The Conversation, an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts.
