ans of Tabitha Jacynth Designs got their annual holiday treat as local jewellery designer Celeste Williams debuted her new and exciting work at her latest show.

Under the theme “Glittering Bows and Mistletoes”, the recent exhibition of handcrafted jewellery and accessories was held at Doongalik Studios on Village Road.

Celeste, the woman behind Tabitha Jacynth Designs, said she is confident she never disappoints when it comes to meeting her clients’ demands. For years, Celeste has involved herself in the art scene in some form. For many years she designed costumes for contestants of local pageants and created formal gowns for patrons of fundraisers, as sewing has been a lifelong hobby of hers. She has also always kept abreast of the latest fashion trends and has been able to utilise her practical and theoretical knowledge in art and design in a lot of her work.

Today, via Tabitha Jacynth Designs, Celeste produces one-of-a-kind handcrafted accessories, mainly statement necklaces and bracelets that are made from natural materials like driftwood, sea glass, shells, coconut shells and so on, which can be found throughout the islands.

The pieces can be strung, crocheted, wire-wrapped or woven, and embellished with crystals to dazzle the eye.

Silk scarves are another of Celeste’s specialities; they hand-dyed to accentuate and match the necklaces, earrings and bracelets she sells.

“Although my background in art and design forced me to look at a lot of things differently, especially when it came to fashion, a lot of time my work was mostly experimental. Even though I’d sketch and plan a project, it could easily turn out to be something totally different. For instance, when I envisioned scarves to match the necklaces, I would use a variety of silk and silk blend fabric and several colouring techniques and processes, and each one would give a different result,” she explained.

“Using a resist that stops the flow of colour pushed me toward a salt that encouraged the flow. When I finally

perfected the technique I was more than thrilled. I still have many of my first pieces of work, so when I look at them I can see where I started from and compare them to the current ones; it’s my personal guide to growth.”

Explaining the name of her brand, Celeste said Tabitha is her magical, quizzical alter ego that influences her work; Jacynth is the modern spelling of jacinth – a reddish-orange coloured gem stone that has a strong spiritual meaning in her life.

“People usually get excited when they see what I’ve created and are amazed by my use of the variety of materials. And I’m often told the pieces they wear are always admired by others; always positive feedback.

There are times when I go looking for suggestions about my work because suggestions often foster growth and give fresh insight into the market forces. Many people have been receptive to my work and Tabitha continues to live up to her whimsical name,” said Celeste.

The designer’s most memorable client experience was the time her mother needed a necklace to match a particular outfit. While working on a suitable piece, Celeste said her mother

casually lifted a previously made necklace from the table and put it on.

Turning to her daughter, she said with a smile: “That looks good, right?”

“When I looked up at it, it did. It looked great on her! There was nothing like seeing my work on her and feeling her confidence in my work,” said Celeste. Since then, many of Celeste’s referrals have come thanks to her mother’s endorsement and support of her work.

“I often hand-dyed silk scarves to match her outfits. And it became a trend for her to wear accessories from Tabitha. My goal is to have Tabitha Jacynth Designs continue to create one-of-a kind accessories using mixed media, while at the same time providing affordable products for everyone, and to develop my online store,” said Celeste.

During her most recent show, Celeste introduced her newest work using copper. She said it’s a joy to evolve and she believes there is no limit to her growth.

interview After failing in high school, he thought his academic career was at an end. But, as he tells Cara Hunt, he was able to recover from this setback in a spectacular way, go on to great heights, and now he honours others through the Bahamas Primary School Student of the Year Foundation.

R

icardo P Deveaux may best be known as the president and CEO of the Bahamas Primary School Student of the Year – an organisation that focuses on honouring the best and the brightest sixth grade students in the country.

However, what many may not know is that Ricardo had his own academic challenges after he flunked out of high school.

It was in June 1983 that Ricardo’s world came crashing down, he told Tribune Weekend.

His parents, Edward and Beverly Deveaux, received a letter from one of the premier private high schools in the Bahamas advising them that due to their son’s failing grades he would be required to withdraw from the school.

“I had already received three F’s and two D’s and had already repeated the eighth grade two years earlier,” he explained.

Left with limited options, his parents sought to enrol him in another private institution, but were not successful.

Instead, he was required to attend a public school.

“As it turned out, R M Bailey Senior High School became the institution that gave a broken young man a second chance,” said Ricardo.

It was a second change indeed, and Ricardo ran with it. But even though he was able to turn things around, it took him a long time to openly admit to initial failure.

After graduating from R M Bailey, he started on a path that would lead to become an example of how failure in youth does not have to determine your future, and how there are always second chances in life.

“It was a great day. I actually felt free of the bondage of believing that I was not good, not smart enough.”

Ricardo got accepted into the historically black university BethuneCookman College (now University) in Daytona Beach, Florida.

During his senior year, he became the third Bahamian to be elected to serve as president of the student government association for the 2,300member student body.

While at Bethune, he was also named as “Most Outstanding Freshman”, “Most Outstanding Sophomore”, “Most Outstanding Junior”, and “Most Outstanding Senior”, before graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology with honours.

Following his graduation from Bethune-Cookman, Ricardo went on to attend Nova Southeastern University, also in Florida, where he graduated with a Master of Science degree in Human Services with a specialisation in Human Resources Management.

While a graduate student at Nova, he was elected as the resident student association president.

In April 1992, he was selected as one of only seven finalists in the Florida College Student of the Year Awards programme. He was the only male student to make it to the finals in 1992. He was also the first student from Nova Southeastern University to make it to the finals.

He was recognised by Nova Southeastern University as the “Student with the Most School Spirit” and had an award established in his honour by the Office of the Residential Life.

After completing grad school, Ricardo returned home to the Bahamas determined to make a difference

in his country by embarking on a career in the civil service. He began working at the Ministry of Education and quickly rose through the ranks of public service to his current position of First Assistant Secretary with the Ministry of Labour.

In 1993, yearning to impact his community in a tangible and positive way, Ricardo accepted an appointment to the Education Committee of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Iota Epsilon Lambda Chapter, and between 1993 and 2007. There, he served in various senior positions and also produced the fraternity’s Honours Day convocation, which recognised the top graduating male high school students in the Bahamas since 1987.

In May 2009, at the age of 43, he became one of the youngest individuals and only the second Bahamian to deliver the coveted Commencement address at Bethune-Cookman.

He was also awarded an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters. In 2010, he was appointed as a Member of the Associate Board of Trustees at Bethune-Cookman University.

In 1996, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Bahamas Primary School Student of the Year Awards programme, a premier national awards

recognition programme for primary school students.

In June 2004, when the Bahamas Primary School Student of the Year Awards Foundation, a voluntary non-profit organisation, was created to govern the affairs of the initiative, he served as its founding chairman.

In 2005, he was elected as the foundation’s president and CEO, a position he continues to hold.

Under his leadership, the Bahamas Primary School Student of the Year Foundation has recognised more than 2,400 of the best and brightest primary school students and presented over $1.5 million worth of scholarships and prizes.

Since 2007, he has located more than 50 percent of the former nominees in the Bahamas Primary School Student of the Year Awards programme and provided updates on their achievements in the annual Student of the Year commemorative booklets and on the organisation’s social media platform, Facebook.

In 2013, he was inducted into the R M Bailey Senior High School Hall of Fame for his work with youth development. He was also nominated for a Bahamian Icon award in 2016.

However, despite his academic, professional and social success, Ricardo still never let on about his failing grades back in high school, not even to many of his closest friends.

“It wasn’t until November 1993 that I admitted that I flunked out of high school to a group of students at H O Nash Secondary School. It wasn’t until November 2008 that I was able to publicly give my personal testimony on a popular television show ‘Dare to be Great’ with host Spence ‘Master Motivator’ Finlayson,” he said.

“It was a great day. I actually felt free of the bondage of believing that I was not good, not smart enough.”

Ricardo remains committed to letting young people know that they can recover and move on from the mistakes of the past.

“If you get knocked down, once you are alive, you are not knocked out,” he said.

He now speaks at colleges, schools and churches, telling young people that all is not lost and that “failure is only a temporary setback for a glorious comeback.”

Ricardo is married to Pamela J Deveaux, nee Cunningham, a chartered accountant. They are parents to two daughters, Richea Juanita and Paige Aaliyah Deveaux.

The right recipe for a sparkling New Year’s Eve

HE bar at home may still be stocked with leftover alcohol from Christmas. However, New Year’s Eve is right around the corner and there is still an opportunity to put those drinks to good use.

For those throwing their own parties to ring in 2019, or those having a simple gathering with friends and family, one thing is for sure is: getting into the right spirit might mean using the help of a few special spirits.

While champagne and sparkling wines are always the top picks for celebrating New Year’s, there is nothing stopping you from being as creative as possible and trying something a little bit of out of the ordinary.

Arame Strachan of Commonwealth Brewery advises people to think outside of the box when it comes to New Year’s drinks.

There are many great alcoholic options on the market, but Arame says bringing the best out of them sometimes requires using fresh juices as mixers.

“It’s sad when we buy such great spirit products and we put substandard mixers in them in order to create a cocktail. But if you want something refreshing and want to impress your guests, you can (mix in) a little cucumber or some jalapeno pepper and create a nice cocktail. It would add an element to your holiday party that people will not forget,” she said.

Finding that perfect cocktail blend may take some trial and error, but Arame promises that once the right ingredients are added, the outcome is sure to be something to be enjoy by all.

She suggests using juice from fresh fruits as mixers to create cocktails.

“Instead of using sweet and sour, get yourself little limes, sugar and syrup and make your own. Everyone has a bullet, because we all are into the healthy lifestyle, so get your strawberries, purée them, get your syrup and make your cocktail.”

Commonwealth Brewery recently launched its baristry programme where top local mixologists compete to create

interesting cocktails and alcoholic beverages with a unique twist.

Atlantis Live organisers said guests of Fergie’s New Year’s Eve performance can expect to hear her perform songs from her debut solo album “The Dutchess,” ranging from “Fergalicious” to “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, as well as hits from her latest studio album, “Double Dutchess.” No stranger to Atlantis Paradise Island, Fergie’s most recently performed beachside for a star-studded, crowd last November to help relaunch The Cove Atlantis.

“She was a hit at The Cove Atlantis relaunch and naturally we thought she would be a good choice to ring in the New Year. Baha Mar hosts its first international music star

aha Mar’s celebrations for the festive will feature one of today’s biggest breakout stars, British singer Dua Lipa, during a live outdoor show on the resort’s Jasmin Lawn on Saturday, December 29.

Overlooking lush gardens, fountains and lake light shows, the concert will start a 8pm. Dua Lipa is set to perform smash hits such as “New Rules”, “One Kiss”, “IDGAF”, and much more.

“Dua Lipa is the first international music artist invited to perform live in concert at Baha Mar. Our guests and visitors are excited to experience her first ever show in Nassau and we look forward to welcoming her to Baha Mar,” said Vanessa Christie, public relations manager at Baha Mar.

After a string of number one hits, a year of sold-out shows and recordbreaking streaming figures, Dua Lipa has become the biggest breakout artist in the world. The singer is the number one most streamed female artist on Spotify and is the first and only female artist in history to have four lead songs with over 500 million Spotify streams.

She has also just spent eight weeks at number one in the UK with the million-plus selling hit “One Kiss” – the most weeks at number one for a female artist this century. he “Transformers” movie universe has lately been leaky and rusted out. It’s become shorthand for bad blockbuster movie-making — male-driven, mindless spectaculars with sophomoric humour. How can it be saved? Just hand the keys over to some talented women.

“Bumblebee,” the sixth film in the series, is a stand-alone origin story written with disarming skill by Christina Hodson and starring the gifted Hailee Steinfeld. It’s a charming tale of a girl and her adorable car-robot, flipping the script on the tired, bloated franchise. While hard-core fan-boys may complain it’s too soft, this film may turn out to be the perfect way to save “Transformers.” Could Bumblebee rescue Optimus Prime this time?

“Bumblebee “ is set outside San Francisco in 1987, where the loyal B-127 Autobot has been sent to protect Earth and prepare the groundwork for the franchise (He’ll befriend Shia LaBeouf at the start of the first film.) ‘Transformers’ gets a great saviour in ‘Bumblebee’

They’re also true to the universe — Bumblebee will eventually change at the end to what he becomes when Bay was in charge, a Chevrolet Camaro.

After so many over-the-top battles in the metal-thumping series, it’s fun here to watch Bumblebee commit more small-scale mayhem, like egging someone’s car. The robot is rendered as a sort of distracted, flaky adolescent teenager and a sequence in which he’s left home alone is priceless. One caution: Younger viewers are advised to watch the 1985 iconic film “The Breakfast Club” — it comes up several times rather brilliantly, especially in one final scene with Cena which refreshingly doesn’t go trite.

Hard-core fans may be unhappy that there’s not enough robot-on-robot violence or turned off by the meet-cute between teen and bot, but hopefully it will attract an audience either tired or turned off by the franchise’s past rigidity and addiction to spectacle. This is what we needed: Smaller, quieter, more human and sweeter.

‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ is lyrical and lovely BEALE STREET RUNNING TIME: 119 MINS

“E

very black person born in America was born on Beale Street...whether in Jackson, Mississippi, or in Harlem, New York,” reads the title card that begins director Barry Jenkins’ “If Beale Street Could Talk .”

The quote is from a 1974 James Baldwin novel, which Jenkins has adapted himself for his first film since 2016’s “Moonlight.” The story is, loosely, about a pregnant woman, Tish (KiKi Layne, a phenomenal breakout) and her partner Fonny (Stephan James), who has been wrongly jailed for a crime he didn’t commit. Tish and Fonny are both achingly young and beautiful, full of promise and hope even amid all the institutional obstacles and injustices that they face in daily life in 1970s Harlem, like not being able to rent their own apartment, or buy groceries at the local mart without being reassessed by a police officer.

Their future, however, is dashed when Fonny is jailed because a woman across town has wrongly identified him as her rapist. Tish has to tell Fonny she’s pregnant through a glass window.

Somehow, at least at first, the circumstances aren’t enough to break their

Back at home, Tish’s family celebrates their daughter. Mom, Sharon (Regina King in a powerful performance), sister, Ernestine (Teyonah Parris) and dad, Joseph (Colman Domingo), open up the sherry, put on a record and call Fonny’s family over to continue spreading the news.

There are three wholly unforgettable scenes in “If Beale Street Could Talk,” and the electric showdown between Fonny’s religious and snobbish mother

(Aunjanue Ellis) and Tish’s family is one of them. Another is a stirringly haunting monologue from Brian Tyree Henry, which unfortunately is really his only significant scene in the film, and the third is Sharon’s heartbreaking talk with Fonny’s accuser. All are wellworth the price of admission Not everything works totally, in between these barnburners there is a lot of sleepy down time (still gorgeously shot and scored) and a few moments that just don’t quite work the way they probably should, like Dave

Franco as an empathetic Jewish landlord who just loves love.

The film plays more like a free verse poem than a traditional narrative, jumping back and forth between moments chronicling the origins of Tish and Fonny’s relationship, and Tish’s struggle to prove Fonny’s innocence in the present.

Jenkins and cinematographer James Laxton (”Moonlight”) use close ups, and straight on shots of his actors looking right into the camera as though they are speaking to the audience and daring them to notice. It’s startlingly impactful and bold, like the perfectly bright clothes costumer Caroline Eselin has chosen to help flesh out this world and its characters. Does anyone use colours as perfectly as Jenkins does? Whether it’s a red leather booth or a yellow coat, everything in his frame is there for a reason, and every shot is like its own beautiful painting come to life.

The whole production makes the film a transporting experience, heady and intoxicating, but perhaps the most important ingredient in bringing it all together is Nicholas Britell’s elegantly subtle and heartrending score.

“Moonlight” is a hard act to follow, and while “Beale Street” might not quite reach the heights of Jenkins’ instant classic of a best picture-winner, it is its own kind of marvel, lovely, transcendent, heartbreaking and as smooth as its jazzy soundtrack.

Kids to ring in 2019 with Ardastra’s ‘Happy Noon Day’

IDNIGHT might be too late for many kids to stay up to welcome 2019, so Ardastra Gardens will be hosting its “Happy Noon Day”.

It’s a New Year’s Eve party for children who won’t be able to stay up late. So instead they will countdown to 12noon, enjoy all the typical party activities, including a ball drop, a juice toast and a dance.

The team at Ardastra said they did not wanting to leave the youngsters out of all the New Year Eve’s fun, so they are making sure children have something to look forward to. ‘Happy Noon Day’ will be held from 11am to 1pm.

“This is our first noon year event, but based on the responses we’ve received thus far, it won’t be our last,” said Tishka Scott, events coordinator at the zoo.

A question posted in a social media group asking if there were any childfriendly activities for New Year’s Eve was what inspired Ardastra to plan something especially for kids.

“Parents should allow their children to attend because it is a unique experience that will create fond holiday memories,” said Ms Scott.

‘Happy Noon Day’ officially closes out Ardastra’s event calendar for 2018.

The zoo has hosted numerous events this month so that families could enjoy the holidays with the animals.

One of those events included “Night Lights”, held every Saturday this month.

“Our gardens have been transformed into a winter wonderland so guests take in the lights then settle down to watch a classic family Christmas movie under the stars. “ ‘Twas Two Nights Before Christmas” was hosted on December 23 and guests were treated to a holiday story read by Mrs Clause. They also took

selfies with Santa and made treats for Santa’s reindeer.

And “Christmas With The Critters” was hosted on December 27.

“Our animals love opening Christmas presents as much as children so we host this event every year for them,” said Ms Scott.

Guests were asked to bring items from the “Dear Santa” letters that were written by the animals.

The zoo is now looking ahead to the new year with new, fun activities.

“Ardastra has many events planned for 2019. We have some new residents that we are very excited to introduce to the public in early 2019,” said Ms Scott.

Michelle Obama says designer’s energy informed her fashion choices NEW YORK (AP) — For Michelle Obama, choosing what designer to wear while she was in the White House involved many factors, from diversity to whether they were a nice person.

Obama talked the decisions behind the outfits that made headlines during her time as first lady during a conversation with another fashion trendsetter, Sarah Jessica Parker, who was the moderator for last week’s event for Obama’s “Becoming” book tour.

During Obama’s eight years as first lady, she became a powerful influence in fashion; she could wear a dress and it would sell out hours after she wore it.

Obama — who dressed in a gold wrap dress with above-the-knee gold sparkling boots for last Wednesday’s event — said she knew as a woman, her clothes would be dissected and mentioned no matter how weighty the topic she was talking about.

“I did know that my clothes were making a statement, I knew that was the case,” she said. “So we decided why don’t we use this platform to uplift some young new designers who normally wouldn’t get this kind of attention, because you can change their lives, which is one of the reasons why we chose Jason Wu for my inaugural gown.”

She also said Wu didn’t expect it, unlike some big designers who felt as if they should have the honour.

“You learn that there are people in this scene who feel entitled to these things because they’ve done it for a while, and I hated that feeling . there are whole lot of people out here who are trying to make it, there are young women and immigrants and black folk.”

Obama also said personal energy of a designer mattered.

“I didn’t want to wear the clothes of someone who didn’t have a good spirit, and you could hear these things, you could hear how they treated my staff or how they treated their works, so everyone I wore as far as I knew had a good spirit as well,” she said.

Stephen Colbert: Trump spoof book ‘Whose Boat’ wrote itself NEW YORK (AP) — For Stephen Colbert and his “Late Show” staff, the best-selling spoof “Whose Boat Is This Boat?” essentially wrote itself.

Because all of the words are by President Donald Trump, who is billed as the author “by accident.” The picture book’s title and contents were inspired

by Trump’s disjointed response last September to Hurricane Florence, which struck North Carolina and South Carolina, where Colbert grew up.

“If you love Trump, you’ll love this book because every word in it is exactly what he said,” Colbert, for whom the president has been prime comic material, said during a recent interview with The Associated Press.

“And if you’re anti-Trump you’ll love this book because every word in it is exactly what he said.”

Comments That Don’t Help in the Aftermath of a Hurricane” has sold hundreds of thousands of copies and raised more than $1.25 million for such charities as Foundation for the Carolinas and World Central Kitchen.

Johnson’s “Reaching for the Moon” is an autobiography for middle graders that will be published next fall, Atheneum Books for Young Readers announced Thursday. Johnson was one of the pioneering black women featured in the book and film “Hidden Figures,” in which she was played by Taraji P Henson. Johnson and such colleagues as Dorothy Vaughan were vital in helping NASA successfully launch flights into space, and eventually to the moon, in the 1960s.

Johnson said in a statement that she wanted young people to believe they could do anything, no matter their race or gender. “I knew who I was and what I was capable of,” she said.

“We should be on the nonfiction list,” Colbert said. “I smell a rat.”

According to a Times spokesperson, “The book was placed on the advice, how-to and miscellaneous list where many books that defy easy categorisation have ranked. It’s a great achievement being on this highly competitive list for six weeks, including a week at No 1, and we wish Stephen were happier about it.”

Colbert said the book is for “children of all ages,” one that appeals to kids because it’s “pretty to look at, no nudity, no violence” and one that shows adults how “our president responds” to natural disasters. The book is billed as “an excellent teaching tool” that lets readers learn “about empathy by process of elimination.”

“Whose Boat Is This Boat?” isn’t the first picture story to mock the Trump administration. “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Presents a Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo” is a best-selling parody of “Marlon Bundo’s Day in the Life of a Vice President,” a tribute to the family’s pet bunny written by Mike Pence’s daughter, Charlotte Pence, and illustrated by his wife, Karen Pence. The vice president is known for his conservative social views; in Oliver’s book, Marlon Bundo has fallen for a fellow male bunny.

Prosecco’s bubble shows no sign of bursting ASOLO, Italy (AP) — Prosecco, the fruity sparkling wine made in the northeastern hills of Italy is gaining in global popularity — and producers of Champagne, for so long the dominant bubbly wine, are taking note.

Prosecco has become the best-selling sparkling wine in the world by volume, and experts say it is eroding the market share of Champagne, the French wine that is synonymous with celebration but also comes with a heftier price tag. The Italian wine’s production eclipsed Champagne’s five years ago and is now 75 percent higher at 544 million bottles.

Champagne still claims the revenues crown, cashing in a record 4.9 billion euros ($5.6 billion) last year on 307 million bottles, 2.8 billion euros of that in exports. But Prosecco’s bubble shows no sign of bursting: exports this year are trending up 16 percent over last year’s 804 million-euro ($913 million) high. Adding insult to injury, sales are surging 40 percent in Champagne’s home country, France, according to one estimate. And those figures don’t reflect the seasonal Christmas sales bump of 20 percent.

Michael Edwards, an expert who has been a wine judge for Decanter magazine and wrote the book “The Finest Wines of Champagne,” says consumers are increasingly interested in sparkling wines.

“Prosecco capitalises on the desire to drink sparkling wine, not necessarily Champagne,” he says.

The Italian bubbly’s success is attributed to its lower price and its profile as an anytime libation, making it popular in Great Britain, the United States and Germany, markets where Champagne has long flourished.

Jowin Lepper Carberry, a consultant for a medical devices company in Baltimore, Maryland, tried Prosecco at the beach four years ago, and liked it so much she started making frozen smoothies with it for friends at her pool. She moved on to making cocktails for dinner parties and has used

Prosecco instead of Champagne for the past four New Year’s Eves.

“My initial reason for trying it at the beach is because it was less expensive than Champagne. Now I use it because I prefer it to Champagne,” she said.

With an average production cost of $4.20 per bottle, a fraction of Champagne’s average $11.63, Prosecco can be purchased at a price that makes it easier to buy as an after-work drink or for a casual gathering, without pomp and circumstance.

The lower price is in part made possible by a simpler production method.

It has two processes of fermentation, both in large tanks, whereas Champagne’s second fermentation period is done while the wine is bottled.

That requires storing the Champagne bottles at an angle and turning them slightly every day by hand to help the fermentation — expensive manual labor when done over thousands of bottles.

Prosecco producers themselves are taken aback by their wine’s success, and mindful not to squander it. They are up against not only imitators, but also other sparkling wines, like

Spain’s Cava, which still does not rival Prosecco in terms of global sales, and Germany’s Sekt, which experts say has improved in quality.

“As the old innkeepers used to say, even the fountain outside the bar is competition,” said Armando Serena the head of the Asolo Consortium of Prosecco makers. “But it is certainly not a phenomenon that we expected. It is cause for reflection for (Champagne producers) perhaps.”

Prosecco’s growing popularity, and the proliferation of sparkling wines in general fueled by younger drinkers, is forcing Champagne makers to up their game.

“The quality of Champagne at the moment has never been higher because it has to be. The danger is the competition, so it has to be better,” said Edwards.

At the same time, the three consortiums that make Prosecco have taken some hints from the Champagne playbook.

They successfully lobbied to have Prosecco as a brand with protected status switched from the grape once known as Prosecco, and now Glera,

to a hilly territory in northeastern Italy. It is based around the city of Treviso and encompasses five provinces in the wider Veneto region and four in neighboring Friuli Venezia Giulia, right up to the Slovenian border. That change, made in 2009, has helped producers better control quality and fight against counterfeiters.

The most renowned of the three consortiums, Conegliano Valdobbiadene, is trying to get the territory recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site, a label that experience in other regions shows boosts both tourism and the value of the product. Champagne received its UNESCO status in 2015.

Prosecco makers are betting future success on higher quality, and higher-priced vintages.

The best Valdobbiadene can cost up to 30 euros ($34).

Sebastiano Bonomo, export manager at the Giusti Dal Col winery near Treviso, said he can imagine one day high-end restaurants keeping a Prosecco list, like they do for Champagne, based on geographic denominations and zones.

“That is the plan we should go for, being able to bring knowledge about our territory, just like the knowledge off Champagne was spread to the entire world,” Bonomo said.

Asolo is the smallest of the three consortia making Prosecco, but it has expanded its vineyards by 86 percent from 2011 to 2017. That has given much needed economic stimulus to a region that suffered a blow with the failure of two regional banks that devoured billions in savings.

“We see many young people who are remaining to work in family companies ... because they have prospects of a good life,” Serena said. “Prosecco has a fruitiness and a perfume that gives hope for the future.”

The wonderful world of Alliums Jack Hardy talks chives, leeks, shallots and garlic

T

he onions we slice onto salads or dice into savoury dishes are the most used members of the Alliums, but our taste buds would be much deprived if they were the only ones. As well as sweet and sharp bulbing onions, we have chives, scallions, leeks, garlic and shallots; each one very special in its own way.

An individual onion chive is a tall but diminutive plant with tubular stems that is usually grown in pots as a group. It is important not to crowd your potted chives so a large container – at least 10 inches diameter is best and the plants should be established two inches apart from each other. This is best done by raising chives in a seed bed and transplanting individually when they are 6-8 inches tall. Your initial impression may be that the chives look rather sparse but once they develop multiple stems I am sure you will be happy. If chives are sown too thickly they never really develop their potential and tend to be thin and floppy instead of upright.

All Alliums love compost, so a healthy addition to your potting soil is a must that can be augmented every month or so with a cupful of compost tea. Along with water, this is probably all the sustenance your pot of chives will need. How long will your pot of chives last? Just about forever. I’ve killed off a few by inadvertent negligence, but with a little maintenance there will be no end to the savoury snips.

Cut your chives with scissors around the point where the white of the small bulbs give way to deep green. A chef friend insists that

Grow chives in a pot. chives should be cut very much on the bias before sprinkling onto dishes. Chives cannot take much heat but can be added to omelettes before cooking. Want to ring an occasional change? Try making your next potato salad with coleslaw dressing and a generous handful of chopped chives instead of mayonnaise and chopped onion.

Garlic chives have flat grass-like leaves and are more suited to being grown in the garden rather than in pots.

When I try to encourage people to grow their own vegetables I always mention scallions. One pack of seeds will give you enough scallions to replace 30 purchases from the supermarket at one dollar for a clump of six to eight. Scallions have

fine taste and are softer than onions.

Leave the unwelcome crunch out of chicken salad by using finely-diced scallions. The first inch or so of the green leaves adds to the presentation of delicate dishes. In many oriental meals and noodle soups scallions can be used in sections close to one inch long. They cook very quickly – a mere minute or so in a skillet – and are extremely adaptable. Revive leftover mashed potato by mixing in lightly sautéed scallions; form the taters into patties and brown in butter.

I always have lots of scallions available in the garden. Like chives they seem to last forever. At least one of my scallion sowings is two years old and doing just fine. They can be grown in rectangular basins

with a depth of at least five inches and holes drilled in the base for drainage.

Leeks are not as popular in the Bahamas as the other Alliums, but are cherished in other cuisines. The flesh tends to melt during long stewing and become an integral part of the cooking matrix, which is a virtue to some and a source of dismay to others.

Leeks are grown as for bulbing onions but are buried much deeper.

The individual slips raised in a seed bed are transferred to the ground when they are six to eight inches long and well rooted. I use the end of a broomstick to make the holes for leek slips and use a twisting motion to ease the roots into position. Leeks do not form bulbs but can fatten up quite nicely. Only the white portion is generally used in cooking and I have never heard of leeks eaten raw. December and January is the best time to start leeks.

Garlic is probably the most talked and written about Allium of the lot.

Some people hate it and can turn the page right here; others include it virtually every meal. Of all the Alliums I mention in this article, garlic is the easiest to grow.

Buy your garlic starters from the supermarket. The cloves in a head of garlic should be large and plump with absolutely no blemishes. Plant your individual cloves – unpeeled – in compost enriched soil so the top of the clove is about two inches below soil level. Within two weeks healthy shoots will appear and you are on your way. As with most Alliums, a monthly dose of compost tea will work wonders. Now is a good time to start garlic and by the beginning of summer you should be able to reap your harvest.

nd the top pop culture moments of 2018 are ...

Wait. WAS there any pop culture this year?

Of course there was, but you could be forgiven for forgetting, because more than ever it was politics, politics, and more politics occupying the zeitgeist and sucking the proverbial air out of the room. Still, if you wanted a break from that, there was a royal wedding with something for everyone, some groundbreaking movies, the return of Mary Poppins (to the screen) and Harry Potter (to Broadway), a goodbye to some favourite celebrities, a tale of two coats that were more than just coats, and more. Join us on a highly selective chronological journey through a year in pop culture:

JANUARY The first awards shows reflect a changed Hollywood, only a few months after the #MeToo movement engulfed the industry. At the Golden Globes, the red carpet becomes a sea of glittering black gowns in solidarity with victims of sexual misconduct, and Oprah Winfrey gives a barn-burner of a speech , looking to a day “when nobody ever has to say ‘Me Too’ again!” At the Grammys, stars don white roses, and singer Kesha dedicates a tearful performance of “Praying” to the #MeToo movement.

FEBRUARY Welcome to Wakanda: The latest Marvel hero to jump off the page into his own movie is the “Black Panther,” and Ryan Coogler’s film is universally acclaimed. “Show them who we are,” goes a line from the film, an appropriate pre-Oscar chant for Coogler and a starry cast including Chadwick Boseman, Michael B Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o and a slew of others. Ten months later the film will be nominated for a Golden Globe, beginning its awards journey.

Wakanda forever: Chadwick Boseman leads the cast of “Black Panther” to worldwide success in February. not to mention “Time’s Up!” Appearing onstage to mark the moment is a powerful trio of Harvey Weinstein’s accusers: Ashley Judd, Annabella Sciorra, and Salma Hayek. And when Frances McDormand says she has “some things to say,” people listen: The best actress winner asks all the women nominees in the room to stand,

and instructs Hollywood to tell their stories.

APRIL Times are changing at the Pulitzers, too, where rapper Kendrick Lamar wins the music prize for “Damn.” He’s the first rapper to win the prestigious laurel and the first winner who’s not a

classical or jazz musician. In film, director John Krasinski energises the horror genre with the creepy, silent “A Quiet Place,” also starring wife Emily Blunt.

On Broadway, the enduring magic of Harry Potter is conjured with the hit London transplant, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”

MAY Let’s say “Do Svidaniya” to our favourite Soviet spy couple as “The Americans” ends its six-season run on FX with an elegant, surprising and moving series finale. At the annual glittery Met Gala, the theme is “Fashion and the Catholic Imagination ,” and imaginations are running rampant — we’re talking about you, Katy Perry and your giant angel wings!

But perhaps the most memorable fashion statement comes when the very American Meghan Markle weds the very British Prince Harry in a refreshingly unadorned white gown.

A gospel choir sings “Stand By Me,” and an American bishop, Michael Curry, almost steals the show with a spirited improvisational sermon before saying: “We gotta get y’all married!”

And at year’s end he’ll lose his $120 million severance when CBS says it has grounds to fire him for cause, concluding he violated company policy and was uncooperative with an investigation — a claim Moonves’ attorney denies.

AUGUST Farewell to the Queen of Soul: Aretha Franklin’s death sparks worldwide mourning, and the singer is hailed not only for her talent — the greatest of a generation — but her lifelong demand for “Respect,” as a woman and an African-American. She is eulogised in an epic eight-hour funeral.

Another longtime great, Paul McCartney, does carpool karaoke with James Corden, and their visit to McCartney’s hometown of Liverpool that has many fans crying sweet tears of nostalgia.

But was that him, in the audience? Maybe.

NOVEMBER Three broken ribs might sideline a football player, but Ruth Bader Ginsburg? Nah. Days after her injury from a fall, the 85-year-old Supreme Court justice is back on the job, capping a year in which she’s emerged as a true pop culture heroine. Already in the spotlight for “RBG,” the documentary in which she’s shown doing push-ups among other things, she’s also the subject of a popular SNL rap video, and by year’s end a new feature film, “On the Basis of Sex.” Oh, and she’s back at the gym, too.

DECEMBER Wanna be the new Oscar host?

They’re hiring! (Unless you’d prefer to be Trump’s chief of staff.) Kevin Hart is forced to step down — two days after being named — when past homophobic tweets are aired. And remember all the talk over the first lady’s Zara coat?

Now it’s Nancy Pelosi’s Max Mara coat we’re discussing, a fiery orange-red number that she wears — with Armani shades — emerging from a tense showdown with the president. The fashion label immediately reissues the discontinued “Fire Coat.” And speaking of hot (or cool) overcoats: A stylish new Mary Poppins is on the block, thanks to Emily Blunt, who proves a worthy successor to Julie Andrews in the Disney sequel. At the end of a tough year, it feels nice to indulge with just a spoonful of sugar.

Death in the

land of gold “T

he Cremation of Sam McGee” is the most famous of Robert William Service’s poems. It was published in 1907 in “Songs of a Sourdough” and is about the cremation of a prospector who freezes to death near Lake Laberge (spelled Lebarge by Service) in the Yukon, Canada, as recited by the man who cremated him.

Before he actually dies, the prospector, who is from the town of Plumtree in Tennessee, asks his friend, the narrator, to swear to him that he would cremate his last remains. He swears he will and McGee dies the following day, after which the narrator hauls the prospector’s frozen body to the shore of Lake Lebarge where he keeps his grisly promise.

Why he left his home in the South to roam ‘round the Pole, God only knows.

Sir Christopher Ondaatje writes about the British Canadian writer, often called the ‘Bard of the Yukon’, whose poem “The Cremation of Sam McGee” may possibly be the best melodramatic poem ever written.

If our eyes we’d close, then the lashes froze till sometimes we couldn’t see; It wasn’t much fun, but the only one to whimper was Sam McGee. And that very night, as we lay packed tight in our robes beneath the snow, And the dogs were fed, and the stars o’erhead were dancing heel and toe, He turned to me, and “Cap,” says he, “I’ll cash in this trip, I guess; And if I do, I’m asking that you won’t refuse my last request.”

Well, he seemed so slow that I couldn’t say no; then he says with a sort of moan: “It’s the cursed cold, and it’s got right hold till I’m chilled clean through to the bone.

Yet ‘tain’t being dead – it’s my awful dread of the icy grave that pains; So I want you to swear that, foul or fair, you’ll cremate my last remains.”

A pal’s last need is a thing to heed, so I swore I would not fail.

And we started on at the streak of dawn; but God! he looked ghastly pale.

He crouched on the sleigh, and he raved all day of his home in Tennessee; And before nightfall a corpse was all that was left of Sam McGee. There wasn’t a breath in that land of death, and I hurried, horror-driven, With a corpse half hid that I couldn’t get rid, because of a promise given; It was lashed to the sleigh, and it seemed to say: “You may tax your brawn and brains, But you promised true, and it’s up to you to cremate those last remains.”

In the days to come, though my lips were dumb, in my heart how I cursed that load.

In the long, long night, by the lone firelight, while the huskies, round in a ring, Howled out their woes to the homeless snows – O God! how I loathed the thing.

And every day that quiet clay seemed to heavy and heavier grow; And on I went, though the dogs were spent and the grub was getting low; The trail was bad, and I felt half mad, but I swore I would not give in; And I’d often sing to the hateful thing, and it hearkened with a grin.

Till I came to the marge of Lake Lebarge, and a derelict there lay; It was jammed in the ice, but I saw in a trice it was called the “Alice May.” And I looked at it, and I thought a bit, and I looked at my frozen chum; Then “Here,” said I, with a sudden cry, “is my cre-ma-tor-eum.”

Some planks I tore from the cabin floor, and I lit the boiler fire; Some coal I found that was lying around, and I heaped the fuel higher;

The flames just soared, and the furnace roared – such a blaze you seldom see; And I burrowed a hole in the glowing coal, and I stuffed in Sam McGee. Then I made for a hike, for I didn’t like to hear him sizzle so; And the heavens scowled, and the huskies howled, and the wind began to blow.

It was icy cold, but the hot sweat rolled down my cheeks, and I don’t know why; And the greasy smoke in an inky cloak went streaking down the sky.

I do not know how long in the snow I wrestled with grisly fear; But the stars came out and they danced about ere again I ventured near; I was sick with dread, but I bravely said: “I’ll just take a peep inside.

I guess he’s cooked, and it’s time I looked”; then the door I opened wide.

And there sat Sam, looking cool and calm, in the heart of the furnace roar;

And he wore a smile you could see a mile, and he said: “Please close that door.

It’s fine in here, but I greatly fear you’ll let in the cold and storm – Since I left Plumtree, down in Tennessee, it’s the first time I’ve been warm.”

Although the poem by Robert Service was fiction, it was based on people and things that Service actually knew and saw when he was working in the Canadian Bank of Commerce’s Whitehorse branch in the Yukon in 1904. He worked there for three years in the frontier town, located on the

Yukon River, which had begun in 1897 as a campground for prospectors on their way to Dawson City to join the Klondike Gold Rush. Service was fascinated by the stories of the miners.

One night he heard a Gold Rush yarn about a mining man who cremated his friend.

Lake Laberge is formed by the widening of the Yukon River just north of Whitehorse. Using poetic licence Service changed its name to Lebarge.

The Alice May was taken from the derelict stern-wheeler Olive May owned by the Bennett Lake and Klondike

Company – which was abandoned after it struck a rock near Tagish, forty miles south of Lake Laberge. Doctor Leonard Sugden used its boiler to cremate the body of a miner who had died of scurvy, because the ground was frozen too hard for burial. Although a boat named Alice May did actually sink on Lake Laberge, it did not happen until a decade after Service’s poem was published n 1907.

William Samuel McGee was in fact a road builder from Lindsay, Ontario who did indulge in some prospecting.

He was in San Francisco, California, at the time of the Gold Rush and in 1898 left for the Klondike. Service saw McGee’s name on a banking form while he was at the Canadian Bank of commerce in Whitehorse in 1904.

He contacted McGee who allowed Service to use his name in his poem – later confirmed by McGee’s family.

McGee did return again to the Yukon in 1930 attempting to prospect along the Lizard River – but with no success.

He did however purchase some urns in Whitehorse which he sold when he retired with his wife to Beiseker in Alberta. The urns were said to contain the ashes of Sam McGee.

illy Butlin became famous as an operator of holiday camps in England, opening his first camp in 1936 and expanding steadily to own many camps and several hotels.

Butlin arrived in Nassau in 1948 and checked into the Fort Montagu Beach Hotel, which he then bought and upgraded. Then he turned his attention to West End, Grand Bahama, where his company, Butlin (Bahamas) Ltd, acquired considerable acreage.

Butlin’s managing director was Sir Bede Clifford, a former Governor of the Bahamas (1932-34).

The plan was to build a 2,000-room vacation village, targeting middle-class North Americans, and a 5,000-foot runway, with a control tower, to make

Until September 18, 1949, Butlin’s British Pounds were worth US $4 each but the next day, the Pound was devalued to US $2.80 – and the price of materials imported from the United States increased by 30 percent. A second factor was the Korean War, which adversely affected American investments abroad.

In 1955, Jack Tar Hotels reopened the resort and blossomed into the huge success that Butlin’s might have been. Jack Tar closed its doors in the early 1960s and the birth of Freeport diverted focus from West End. Bill Butlin (1899-1980) was knighted in 1964.

Butlin’s Bahamas it easy and safe for people to travel to and from Grand Bahama. Freeport had not yet been created. The Department of Civil Aviation hired three new air traffic controllers – Morton Carey, Robert Sweeting and Lionel Thompson – who wee posted to West End, where the first plane landed on November 7, 1949.

Butlin planned to open the Village on January 1, 1950 and, despite labour problems, construction progressed

1950 and early results were promising. In one month, there were 4,040 arrivals, all from Florida, mostly from Miami. At a time when the average American tourist, in cities like London, spent US $15.99 per day, that same tourist could spend a week at West End for only US $99.

Sadly, the village was never able to pay its way, and by 1953, creditors forced Butlin (Bahamas) Ltd into liquidation.

Be more compassionate in 2019 Animal matters | KIM ARANHA

I

n three days we will be in the year 2019. Wow, I clearly remember midnight of 2000; I bet you do, too. How can that possible be 19 years ago?

Time zips by and every year we make ourselves stellar promises of what we are going to do for the next 12 months and how we will change.

The Bahamas Humane Society makes resolutions every year and we do everything that we can to stick to them and make things better for the animals in this country.

Every year we see horrible cases of abuse and neglect, cases that I simply cannot believe. I do not understand how people can be so devoid of empathy and or compassion. How can people look at another breathing creature and not feel for it? How can people not understand that animals feel fear?

You see stray dogs and cats huddling in fear because they have been abused and mistreated. If you do not feel compassion for them, then in my books, plain and simple, there is something wrong with you; you missed an essential gene when they were being passed out. Feel free to challenge me about this opinion, I would be most happy to debate it with you!

So New Year’s resolution No 1 is to try and educate more people to be kinder and compassionate towards animals in the Bahamas, to reach out and touch people and get them to understand what an animal goes through.

Somewhere buried deep in our culture is a horrific, blatant disregard for animals, and we at the BHS would like to change that. We do find that reaching the children in a family can be very effective; the kids will correct the parents. And hopefully the kids will grow up to become sensitive and caring adults.

This subculture of violence and gangs that Nassau is subjected to does not encourage kindness or consideration towards any creature, including fellow human beings. Life is cheap, drive-by shootings are a way of life, stabbings, rapes and abuse abound.

Where all those who can and should be influencing the young men of our nation?

New Year’s resolution No 2 is to try and get more dogs and cats neutered and spayed, which is the only effective way to cut down on the population of stray and roaming animals. Feral cats abound, the dog population is still too high. It has been proven that a properly organised and enforced spay and neuter programme can change all that in a few years. If we could get the funding we require, we could solve the problem, humanely and permanently in a matter of 10 years. But it takes funding; funds that the BHS does not have.

New Year’s resolution No 3: Persuade people to adopt, not shop. The shelter has an abundance of beautiful and healthy dogs looking for homes,

for a very low and reasonable adoption fee that includes the animal being spayed or neutered. People need protection in their yards; people are low on excess money, yet they will bypass the great dogs in the Bahamas Humane Society in order to spend $600 or more on a dog of questionable pedigree. Many of our dogs are crossbreeds of pedigree dogs, and we also have lots of small sized dogs too.

We need to get the message out. Don’t shop…adopt!

PET OF THE WEEK New Year’s resolutions by Pesto, aged six months

1. Smile at the adopters 2. Cuddle up to the adopters 3. Look really cute when the adopters come

4. Play with my cat toys when the adopters are looking 5. Get adopted!

I also need to remember to tell people they can come and meet me between 11am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am to 4pm on Saturday, or they can call 323-5138. I’ll keep my paws crossed that I can start out my new year in a new home!

New Year’s resolution No 4: Spread the word about our wonderful Thrift Shop that grows every year. We have the most amazing selection of clothing, accessories, toys, books, household items, sports equipment, occasionally musical instruments and much, much, more. I invite you to come and see for yourself.

My last hope is that we can do more, raise more money, have more support, and make people see that the Bahamas Humane Society benefits everyone, humans too, because we make this island a better place for you to live in, we answer your calls, we help you with your problems, so our long arm of assistance and help does not stop with animals but extends to humans, even humans who have no pets and have no interest in animals, our existence makes life better for humans too.

The Bahamas Humane Society raffle draw is today, Friday 28, at the Mall at Marathon. We are down there selling the last chance raffle tickets now, with an amazing prize of $10,000 of groceries generously donated by Super Value and other great prizes. Why not end 2018 by helping the BHS and maybe winning a useful prize? What a way to start 2019! Come on down, we will be there all day and we will draw the winning tickets just before dark.
