Christmas is happening, but so is COVID-19. 2020 has been a year like no other, but it has not stopped us from moving ahead. We survived. We adapted. We “rolled” with the various provisions which were tailored to respond to the state of the virus at any given time. We pivoted and kept on going, because God is still God and we are still the Church. The Hymn writer wrote: “Your grace and mercy brought us through. I’m living this moment because of you.” The babe of Bethlehem and every baby - is a symbol that God is a God of new beginnings, of life and hope in every circumstance. Every Christmas proclaims this and challenges us to believe it. And this year has proven it. The new challenge is that Christmas 2020 has to happen differently: restricted family gatherings (with ten persons or less); we should not be mixing households; no parties or dancing; no Junkanoo, etc. This is very strange for us because we are a gathering,
LAISH BOYD touching, hugging, shoulder-rubbing people, who love to pack into home spaces too small for our numbers. However, the best advice of the time calls us to show our love in a different way, ie, from a distance - you stay over there and, I will stay over here. In spite of this we are still close, one in heart, mind, and spirit, never mind the social distance and other restrictions. That will never change, Christmas still happens - in spite of COVID. Jesus came into the world despite the frailty and imperfection of humanity. Christmas is still Christmas despite COVID. God is with us always but Christmas is a special reminder that he came to be with us and remains with us no matter what.
Irish Poet, Cecil Alexander, wrote the hymn, Once in Royal David’s City. Two verses say: He came down to earth from heaven, Who is God and Lord of all, And His shelter was a stable, And His cradle was a stall; With the poor, and mean, and lowly, Lived on earth our Saviour holy. For He is our childhood’s pattern, Day by day like us He grew, He was little, weak, and helpless, Tears and smiles lie us He knew: And he feeleth for our sadness. And He shareth in our gladness. May the Christ Child in Christmas be our Hope, Love, Joy and, Peace as we commemorate His birth. And one final note: there is a lot of hardship, food insecurity and hunger in our communities. Let’s help somebody this Christmas: help someone or help a family that you do not help ordinarily. Help them by being interested in their circumstances, with our love, and concern, and with our material resources. So many of us have much more than we need. Share! Touch someone! The Anglican Diocese of The Bahamas and The Turks and Caicos Islands joins me in wishing one and all a Blessed Christmas and a Blessed New Year.
HEALING, RESTORATION AND REFORMATION 1 CHRONICLES 28:8-9 NIV: “So now I charge you in the sight of all Israel and of the assembly of the Lord, and in the hearing of our God: Be careful to follow all the commands of the Lord your God, that you may possess this good land and pass it on as an inheritance to your descendants forever. “And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.” The wonderful thing about Jesus Christ is that we are all given extra chances to accept Him as Saviour until He finally returns as Judge. We want to offer everyone this opportunity. We need to pray for discernment to know who needs help, what kind of help and the best approach to use. We are all fearfully and wonderfully made. We are all made in the image of God and are unique and special in our own way. Yet we all have areas where we need help to heal and forgive, to become whole and well.. In the church we need to examine our consciences daily: are we pleasing God with our thoughts, words and actions? Are we godly witnesses? In the workplace, we need to examine our work ethic daily. Self-evaluation, peer evaluation and various levels of accountability to supervisors are all important ways to discover the truth about how we are performing. In the community, we need to look at how we treat each other in the neighbourhood, at school,

at work and in places of recreation We can seek to help the lost and the hurting with the help of the Lord: is it a matter of varying degrees of brokenness? Are we all somewhat wounded? Who is hurting deeply? Am I willing to help? Are we accountable to one another, and are we humble enough to learn from a child about forgiveness and recovery? There are many types of sources of brokenness: Hurts from the past, insecurities in the present and fears of the future. These may lead to: addictions, mental illness, unforgiveness, guilt & shame, anger & rebelliousness, authority issues, inferiority complex, superiority complex. pride and conceit, fear of failure, manipulation and abuse. Just some of the approaches to help and healing are as follows: 1. Admission of the need for help 2. Acceptance of the help offered 3. Monitoring & Evaluation 4. Counselling 5. Therapy and medication (if need be) 6. Ongoing family support 7. Ongoing prayer support When it comes to resistance to change, there are those who do not listen to God, much less to other human beings. Whether it is in the church or the community, we need to answer for our poor
actions and attitudes. Both church and state leaders may need to be corrected. The process may even have to go from private to public correction if the leader is stubborn and disobedient. This is the role that the prophets played, and Advent is an excellent time to consider how to work for change: When it comes to institutional or organizational reform the process may involve: 1.Individual interview 2.Board review and interview 3.Issuing of incentives/ ultimatums 4. Clear consequences (possible institutionalisation if it is a severe mental health disorder) 5. Termination (if no other option) Action must be taken for the good of the individual and the organisation. Procrastination may be dangerous as things tend to escalate rather than resolve themselves. When it comes to leadership, we need to protect the church and the community from abuse. When it comes to membership, we need to respect authority and speak our truth in love. Prevention is better than cure. When it comes to making leadership choices, institutions and organisations do well to spend time prayerfully engaging in discernment in order to engage in: 1. Better selection process 2. Stricter guidelines 3. Closely monitored probation 4. Early intervention 5. Regular assessment 6. Firmer control Ultimately, we are all brothers and sisters. Let us love one another and help one another to be healed, and whole, to the glory of God.

THANKS to a community effort led by the 8th Bahamas Trinity Methodist Scout children from over the hill communities had an opportunity to learn in a controlled setting with all the necessary tools. And for eight-year-old Brandle Mithiell, (a Columbus Primary Student) the opportunity for virtual learning on a sponsored tablet device was a great experience. He was among the students welcomed by the scout association from diverse backgrounds to the over-the-hill Quakoo Street Community Centre. Many families and children have been unable to
conform to the requirements necessary to partake in virtual learning simply because they do not have basic resources at home. Recognising this the Scout Association wanted to do some good for those who may have been finding this time challenging. In an unprecedented pandemic where the world is experiencing global shut downs children and the vulnerable are placed in a precarious state. The Peter Street Quakoo Street and Fritz Lane Communities, which are the “feeder system” for the 8th Bahamas Scout Troop became the site of a
history-making opportunity for this youth group. According to Neville Wisdom, Group Leader and his co-ordinators; Manita Wisdom and Shellyn Ingraham, in September of this year, they were in the community handing out food and personal care supplies when they noticed children roaming the streets unsupervised. They immediately reached out to their church and other stake holders to join in this novel initiative. Parishioners of Trinity Methodist Church, Ministry of Education, d’Albenas Agency, and others partnered to purchase and procure electronic Tablet
“The incarnation of Christ helps us face coronavirus” A CHRISTMAS message by Bishop Simeon Hall FOR thousands of Bahamians, this Christmas will be far different than any in many years. By any measurement, the last twelve months have been fraught with national calamities over which we have no control. There was Hurricane Dorian, and not we are presently faced with a disease that changes each day. The nation’s spirit has been tattered and many are nearing the edge of quiet desperation. The disease has not only caused Junkanoo to be cancelled, but social life and interaction have been curtailed. The loss of these cultural events might cause us to look more closely at the deeper meaning and significance of the birth of the Christ-child. A Suspicious Birth The incarnation of Christ began as a mysterious, somewhat suspicious birth, but it later became the very foundation on which the Christian faith is built. God has now changed address – Emmanuel means “God now lives in your neighborhood”. It is true that human greed, expressed in rugged commercialism has not eclipsed the real meaning of the truth and power that Christ, the godman has become a part of our human plight. The omnipotent God orchestrated the birth of His begotten Son, so all humankind need not be distracted by cultural trappings. Not All Was Calm On that first Christmas, very little was calm, and few things were bright. Rome ruled with an iron
fist. Beside all this, there was no prophetic word to God’s people. The social, political, and even religious events which engulfed the Jewish people lead to despair and hopelessness. Jesus punctuated the earth’s realm so that those who were excluded now have a right to be included on all levels. Incarnation means the ineffable and Holy God became a part of the human drama. No Room in The Inn Bethlehem, where Christ was born, was considered the “Over the Hill” area of the day. There was no room in the crowded motel and the manager provided a stable in the rear. Ponder for a moment the depth to which the sovereign God would descend to redeem and restore all humankind. We Are Not Alone Advent, in its purest noblest form, mitigates against that secular philosophy that humans are left alone to meander through the maze of their existence. Advent lifts the human dilemma beyond human capabilities. God is inextricably a part of whatever you and I face. Angels, wisemen and shepherds all were included in this cosmic drama, Even King Herod made a response. Your response to the Christ-child will determine your place in history. God Is Still With Us That Christ is with us and is a part of the human drama changes the projected outcome.
“Born to raise sons of earth, born to give them second birth…” Sickness, disease and death on every and all levels now face 180 countries. We need a Saviour. The sickness you now face, the questions you quietly hold about God and His providence, are all answered in the Godman Jesus. You are not alone. Even if you lack the spiritual discernment to sense God’s presence, He is with you. God punctuated human history, so that history might become His – story and all mankind are players who participate on this great story of human existence. We are not alone! God Is In The Vicinity There might be a family touched by COVID-19. My word is “Emmanuel, God is with you” with all your fears and despair. God, the omnipresent spirit is there with you. Turn away from your pain and discover His divine purpose. Leave your sheep and go find the babe. Leave the secular and material and go find the spiritual and the eternal. Leave your past and face boldly your future. God is with you.
devices, school furniture and lunch supplies. The Quakoo Street Community Centre became the meeting place for ‘E-Learning’ sessions from Monday to Friday. Ideally staffed and managed in partnership with the IDB Group, and Ministry of National Security, this location was favorable as most of the children came from homes without electricity and internet connectivity. The scenes of children logged in to their course work completing assignments and listening to virtual instructions was described as heartwarming.
Mr Wisdom informed the students (while most Scout groups are in recess with limiting contacts) that they were among the first in the scouting world to be a part of such a program. He along with National Training Commissioner Joseph Pickering expressed their desires to not see any young people being caught up in negative behaviours. In conclusion, participants all joined in shouting out the Scout chants; “Bravo” and “Thank You’. The 107-year-old Bahamas Scout Association is under the leadership of Andrew Pinder (President).
THE amazing Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 4:6 (KJV) “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known unto God.” Paul is being instructive and we should examine the passage more closely. This verse relates to anxiety, which we all experience. It affects both believers and others. We can all feel fearful at times. It is believed that Paul wrote Philippians 4:6 when he was imprisoned. This makes it even more commendable. Rather than becoming anxious, Paul prayed and turned to God with thanksgiving. This is very significant. Paul goes on to refer to the “peace of God which passeth all understanding” in verse 7. The 23rd Psalm reminds us that our Lord and good shepherd will ensure that we do not want. We must remember how to avoid anxiety when life places us in valley situations. Pray and give thanks to God. Matthew 6:25-34 is such an important reminder of why we should pray and not feel anxious during life’s storms. Our Father is available if we humble ourselves and seek His help. God loves us. We should seek Him during our time of need. We can petition God for all our needs. We are given assurance of what God can do in Matthew 7:7 when we pray in faith and confidence We are truly blessed. Amen. Thanks to be to God for the sharing of His word.
