The bishop who stole Christmas? By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net THE controversy surrounding the Italian bishop who dropped a bombshell on kids last week by telling them the truth about Santa Claus’ existence is also a topic of discussion for Bahamians in the Christian community who find themselves on both sides of the fence of this issue. Antonio Staglianò, Bishop of Noto in Sicily, was speaking on the Feast of Saint Nicholas – the initial inspiration for the gift-giving Santa Claus – about the commercialisation of Christmas minimizing the true religious meaning of the season. In answering a question on the topic, he told the children that the popular figure of the big jolly man in red is not real. “No, Santa Claus does not exist,” he said. “In fact, I would add that the red of the suit he wears was chosen by Coca-Cola exclusively for advertising purposes.” The bishop’s harsh honesty was met by criticism and backlash that prompted an apology from the Diocese of Noto on its Facebook page, written by Staglianò’s press secretary Father Alessandro Paolini. “First of all, on behalf of the bishop, I express regret for this statement that has

BISHOP ANTONIO STAGLIANÒ VS SANTA CLAUS disappointed the children, and want to clarify that this was not at all Mr Staglianò’s intention, “(The intention was to) reflect on the meaning of Christmas and the beautiful traditions that accompany it with greater awareness and regain the beauty of a Christmas now increasingly ‘commercial’ and ‘de-Christianised.’” “If we can all draw a lesson, young or old, from

the figure of Santa Claus (which originates with Bishop St Nicholas) it is this: fewer gifts to ‘create’ and ‘consume’ and more ‘gifts’ to share The bishop then also explained: “I didn’t tell them that Santa Claus doesn’t exist, but we talked about the need to distinguish what is real from what is not. A real fact has come out, namely that Christmas no longer

belongs to Christians. ...the Christmas atmosphere of lights and shopping has taken the place of Christmas.” Bahamian Christians weighed in on the issue with mixed responses. Ronald Burrows, who is a faithful Catholic, said the backlash against Bishop Staglianò was non-sensical as he was only speaking the truth.

“Sometimes the truth is a hard pill to swallow,” he told Tribune Religion. “What kind of world are we living in? How could you possibly be wrong for answering the question in a truthful manner. Santa Claus is not real and I would like to think that parents would have made this known to their children. This backlash he has received is misdirected and crazy at the same time. But all of this only goes to show the state of the world that we are living. How do people get angry over the truth, I can never understand.” Nancy Davis said she understands why the bishop chose honesty. “I wonder what they would have said if he had said ‘Yes, Santa is real’, then that would make him a lying bishop. Imagine then what they would have said about him. I think the backlash would have been greater if he did not answer truthfully. I don’t know why people were angry,” she said. Karen Holder believes there was a way the truth could have bee communicated without actually dampening the spirits of the youngsters. “No, the origin of Santa is not real, but Santa is a real figure of Christmas and the story around him makes Christmas a little more

exciting, warm and special,” she said. Suzette Marshall on the other hand believes that the figure of Santa must be put in proper perspective in relation to the Christian view of the holiday. “I think Santa Claus is given too much play during the holidays. He is not the reason for the season, Jesus Christ is and we need to never ever forget that. Teach the kids how Jesus was born and how his birth changed humanity forever. That’s what we need to be focused on, not on a bishop getting backlash for telling the truth about someone who has been made an idol of during this time. Christmas is about Christ and often times that gets lost in translation during the holidays,” she said. Ruth Rolle agreed. “The bishop is right that the modern Santa Claus is largely an invention by Coca-Cola; a figure for consumerism. St Nicholas Day, when kids get small gifts, is actually on December 6. Santa has taken over and kind of conquered Christmas. It’s not up to a Catholic bishop to uphold this fallacy. I actually like the idea of some European countries where the Christ child brings the presents on Christmas Eve or Day,” she said.

’Tis the season for music Bahamians share their favourite Christmas songs By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribunemedia.net CHRISTMAS calls for colourful and festive décor, lit up pine trees, and the piles of gifts beneath them; it’s all part of the celebration of Jesus’ birth. And through all of the festivities, there is the caroling and gospel music that promote the season’s joy and cheer - emphasising the true meaning of Christmas. From CeCe Winan’s “Away In A Manger” to Mariah Carey’s rendition of every Christmas related song there is, most people’s

playlist during this time of the year spreads messages from the heart. “I love that some of the Christian songs are old but year after year they are recreated by modern artists like Mariah Carey and many others,” said Tribune reader Patrica Bootle. “The Braxton Family sisters also have a really good Christmas album that I love. Songs like ‘O, Holy Night’ and ‘Mary Did You Know’ are on that album. It is nothing like having family over and have music like this play in the background while everyone is mingling. It is so nice.”

Newer artists like the gospel collective known as Maverick City Music are also doing their part to spread holiday cheer. “The ‘Joy to the World’ rendition by Maverick City has to be one of the best Christmas songs I have ever heard. We have all heard this song before at least once in our lives, but in the midst of hard times, for me, this song sung by this group that I love makes me realise that my joy should not be based on what I feel or experience in this life. It should solely be based on Jesus’ love for me, His child,” said Brenda Davis.

“Maverick City is a gem of a group, they also remade ‘The First Noel’, which is another classic Christmas hit. They do all of their songs with music video visuals, and I can’t explain it, you have got to watch it for yourself. The worship alone would have you jumping, praising and crying at the same time. I would love to experience this live in concert.” Yolanda Adam’s “Born On This Day” is also a top 10 Christmas favourite with many. Lashaundra Deal quoted her favourite lyrics: “Christ the Lord, He’s God the Father, God the Son and Holy Spirit. Christmas

MAVERICK CITY MUSIC is the day when the angels appeared to say; they said be not afraid, for born on this day, born to save is Christ the Lord.” Ms Deal said it is not only one of her favourite Christmas gospel songs, it is also one of her favourite songs overall. “Back in the day I sang it along with a choir as a

little girl and I will always remember it. I’ve been in love with it since then. The lyrics help you paint such a beautiful picture of Christ the Lord, the Father and the Son. Just what it says; He was born to save the world. Every year I revisit this song regardless of season; it instantly brings a smile to my face,” she said.

Do you need a saviour? G

od sent his son whose name was Jesus to live, die and rise again for us. God knew we needed a Saviour to save us from ourselves and the unforgiveness we feel toward each other. If God thinks we need saving then we need to accept what this means. What does this saviour do? 1. He identifies with us by becoming one with us so that we can know that he feels with and for us by experience. He comes as a baby to start out just like us. We can trust that he hears

us when we talk to him and that he understands our struggle and our heart’s desires. What else would we have wanted from a saviour? When we look around, we see a world made up of too many who are broken and bleeding, sick and dying, destitute and despairing, violent and violated. Each one needs a saviour to bring salvation but to also heal broken bodies, minds and spirits, and to offer forgiveness. Our Lord will be broken and bleeding on the cross. He will be heartbroken, heartsick and

suffering spiritual and emotional heart-ache because of our human condition. He will be able to identify with the anguish of human suffering in an agonising way. 2. He spends time teaching, healing, preaching, sharing, touching, giving, weeping, laughing blessing and every other good thing that we do. He becomes like us so that we can become like Him. Jesus Christ is the only bridge that could lead us back to a reconciled relationship with God. There was and is no other way to find our way home. Jesus is

the Way. In our darkness, Jesus is the Light. In a time of lies and fake news, He is the only Truth. In a state of sinking sand, Jesus is the only Solid Rock. If you believe that Jesus is the son of God and you accept that you need a saviour, then confess your sins to Him and open your heart to receive the Holy Spirit’s cleansing power. Let Him wash you clean from every stain of sin in the sacrament of baptism in the Church. If you say that you are a Christian, then ask your saviour to really become your Lord, if you are not living a transformed life.

REV ANGELA C BOSFIELD PALACIOUS MEDITATION Move to the next level of commitment. Let us dedicate our life to worship and serve our soonto-be celebrated newborn

king whose death and resurrection will be recalled by March or April each calendar year. Then, let us not forget that Jesus will come again for a second time as the righteous judge. May we prepare ourselves to meet Him on his glorious return and on Judgement Day. • Rev Angela Palacious, a motivational speaker and author of several devotional books, is an Anglican priest. THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS: GIVING GOD HIS GLORY T

oday we present this Christmas devotional to help you enjoy some of the marvelous works of God during the incarnation of His son, the Lord Jesus Christ: The shining brilliance of the angel Gabriel had by then disappeared. The oncein-a- lifetime experience for the very young Virgin Mary must then be tested – to see if, after all, she was in some kind of a trance, or a dream or in a real world! Mary wasted no time acting on the hint of the angel Gabriel, who had told her that her cousin Elizabeth – the barren wife – was now six months pregnant. She packed her little bundle of necessities and hurried off on her five-day journey to the hill country to see her cousin Elizabeth. It is interesting that in none of the gospels there is a single mention of any family member in Mary’s life – no mother, no brother, no sister, no father, not even a girlfriend. It could very well be that one of the compelling reasons that she rushes so swiftly to Elizabeth –even though so very far away in the hill country – was that she had no mother and needed family support for such a motherhood challenge in her life. In any case, she was now in Elizabeth’s little humble house. These are now two women in whose lives sudden and miraculous changes have been brought on by God’s own sovereign working in their lives.

And it was here in this highly spiritual environment – sensing the reality of God; the high expectation of God; and where the proof of God’s Hand at work was so marked – that it was easy to be aware of God. And it is still easy to be sensitive to God’s Spirit, and feel His touch, and respond to His moving, when in fellowship with other persons, who are also in touch with God. What a blessing to know this experience! Here are two sisters in the Lord – one old and spiritfilled and the other young and spirit-filled. Yet there is no generation gap here! A sister’s praise meeting is taking place in a private home! An older sister - old enough to be her mother – is good spiritual companionship for the younger one. What a need there is in this very moment, here is our Bahamas, for older sisters, who walk with God, to have reviving fellowship with the younger ones also seeking that walk. The soul cries out And so moved by the presence of God’s Spirit, Mary cried out from the depth of her heart – words that reflect a powerful soul experience! In some sense, it is the most powerful expression of personal worship in the whole New Testament. Here are those words: “My soul praises the Lord And my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour. For He has been mindful Of the humble state of His servant.

PASTOR REX MAJOR Senior Pastor Emeritus of Grace Community Church

NATIVITY SCENE From now on all generations will call me blessed. For the Mighty One has done great things for me – Holy is His Name. His mercy extends to those who fear Him, From generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with His arm, He has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones. But has lifted up the humble, He has filled the hungry with good things. But has sent the rich away empty. He has helped His servant Israel, Remembering to be merciful. To Abraham and His descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”

(Luke 1:46-55 NIV) This beautiful hymn of praise to God was no learned script, no rehearsed piece for the “testimony service” at the Church. This was no “Give me a witness gimmickry” to add some fresh theatre to the church shows. No! Not this! This was brand new. This was right out of the heart, from a clear, fresh vision of God Himself. It was about God.

A fresh vision of God She had a vision of God. She saw Him. And her excitement knew no boundary. She could no longer sit quietly. She must give Him verbal adulation! Because the vision she saw had captured her insides. Something was going on inside of her. Maybe it’s like the chorus we used to sing years ago: “It’s bubbling!” But this young girl was caught up in the sweetness of the moment. And from that real stirring of

her insides – her deepest emotions – she exclaimed: “My Soul does magnify the Lord!” And if those were the only words uttered by this little Nazareth girl, heaven would have been thrilled! And how the heart of God must have rejoiced – as His Name is on the lips of another earthling. He’s getting praise, adoration, exaltation from another earthly creature. And He is pleased. There was no church congregation, no cathedral, no mass choir, and no dynamic preaching. Have you found, like Mary, your song of praise to God because Jesus came?
