National tennis champions By JONATHAN BURROWS Tribune Sports Reporter jburrows@tribunemedia.net
TWO new national tennis champions were crowned over the weekend at the National Tennis Center as the Giorgio Baldacci Open Nationals delivered highlevel competition from both the men’s and women’s divisions. In the men’s final, thirdranked Jerald Carroll captured the national title with a straight-sets victory over second-ranked Michael Major, winning 7-5, 6-0. “First two matches were pretty simple, I just came out, executed, played, and stayed solid. This last match
was a solid win. The first set was tough, 7-5, I mean, I had to save two set points, and it was a good battle. He is a great player, he played a great match, but I came out, I stayed solid, and I executed, followed the game plan, and I came out with the win, so...of course, lots of camaraderie there.” Carroll said his goal was to start strong after losing to Major at the last nationals, focusing on staying solid and not giving away free points. Despite finishing as runner-up, Major’s performance throughout the tournament earned him significant recognition. The men’s finalist will represent The Bahamas for the first
time at the Davis Cup next year, marking an important milestone in his tennis career and a step forward for the national programme. In the women’s division, second-ranked veteran tennis player Simone Pratt added another national title to her résumé with a 6-4, 6-3 win over 14-year-old Addison Munroe. “It feels great this year to be the national champion, I put in a lot of work preparing, and, you know, going out there and playing every match, best as I could,” said Pratt. “I tried to just take it one point at a time, try not to, you know, pull the trigger too fast, and try to play out the points a little bit more and hit with a little bit
more spin and, you know, play a little bit more strategic and smart.” Pratt also spoke to the pipeline of younger athletes competing in the tournament. “It's great to see the younger ones coming up, 'cause that's what it's about. I just say, let me go out there and try my best and do what I could do.” The final showcased the talent present, with Pratt relying on her composure and court awareness to manage key moments, while Munroe displayed maturity beyond her years. Runner-up Addison spoke about her performances in the finals. “I feel like I played great in all the matches, and I feel like
there are always things that I could work on and be better. And my mindset was mostly positive, but I think I could work more on my mental.” Munroe’s runner-up finish was one of the standout stories of the weekend. At just 14 years old, she has already established herself among the country’s top players. Her performance at the Giorgio Baldacci Open Nationals confirmed her rapid development and growing confidence on the national stage. Munroe will also make her debut next year at the Billie Jean King Cup, representing The Bahamas for the first time in international team competition.
Perry Newton, president of the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association, praised both finals and highlighted the significance of the results for the sport locally. Newton also emphasized the importance of the upcoming international opportunities for the two runners-up. “Having Michael Major step into the Davis Cup and Addison Munroe into the Billie Jean King Cup is a major achievement,” he said. The Giorgio Baldacci Open Nationals once again served as a key platform for showcasing the depth of tennis talent in The Bahamas. • SEE PHOTOS ON PAGE 8
Rookie ‘VJ’ scores 26 to help 76ers get 121-114 win over Mavs By AARON BRACY Associated Press PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Tyrese Maxey scored 38 points, including seven during a key fourth-quarter stretch, and rookie Valdez “VJ” Edgecombe added 26 as the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Dallas Mavericks 121-114 on Saturday night. Dominick Barlow added 21 points for Philadelphia, which played without Joel Embiid (illness/right knee injury management) and Paul George (left knee injury management). Embiid missed his second consecutive game and 16th of the season. The 76ers have won six of eight. Cooper Flagg and Anthony Davis each scored 24 points for Dallas. Flagg, who turns 19 on Sunday, began play second among NBA rookies in
both scoring (18.6 points per game) and rebounding (6.4 rpg). Edgecombe, selected two picks after Flagg in this year's draft, had 23 points and a highlight-reel dunk in Philadelphia’s 116-107 win over the Knicks in New York on Friday night. He entered third among rookies at 15.6 points per game. Flagg’s short jumper tied it at 104 with 8:56 remaining before Philadelphia took control behind Maxey and Edgecombe. Maxey scored seven points and Edgecombe the other four during an 11-0 run over the next 2:21, capped by Maxey's 3-pointer that put the Sixers ahead 115-104 with 6:30 to play. IBA Panthers and Timberwolves win titles at Christmas Holiday Classic
THE TRIBUNE
By BRENT STUBBS Chief Sports Editor bstubbs@tribunemedia.net Coach Denykco Bowles and his International Basketball Academy Bahamas Panthers and Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves took home all but one of the four division titles at their IBA Bahamas Christmas Holiday Classic. Team Unknown Elite avoided a sweep of all of the titles by the Panthers and the Timberwolves when they knocked off the IBA Panthers 61-30 in the 16-and-under championship game on Sunday at the Anatol Rodgers Gymnasium. Elijah Pierre was unstoppable as he worked his way inside for a game high 19 points to earn the most valuable player award. He was joined by Peter Lewis with 11. "The first three quarters were pretty good, but in the fourth quarter, we slackened off and allowed them to get back into the game," said coach Anterio Albury. "But we came out with the W. That's all that matters." Albury said his team was delighted to get a chance to play some games during the Christmas break. Hopefully, he said this will inspire them as they head back to their various schools to play for their teams in January. IBA got eight from Christian Lewis and six apiece from Mihael Mackey and Shatario Martin, but it wasn't enough to stop Team Unknown, who led from start to finish. After opening a 13-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, Team Unknown Elite surged to a comfortable 27-14 margin at the half. They came out in the third and increased their margin to 48-16. But the Panthers used a 16-10 run in the fourth to trim the deficit. The other divisional titles went either to IBA or Anatol Rodgers, both of which were coached by Bowles. 19U championship Panthers 42 Timerwolves 36 With both of his teams advancing to the final, Bowles decided to coach his Anatol team against his more experienced IBA team. What started out as a defensive battle with IBA taking a 7-1 lead at the end of the first quarter, turned into a 24-18 lead at the half. The Timerwolves, however, held the Panthers scoreless in the third as they took a 29-24 lead into the final period. The Panthers then went on an 18-7 tear in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Ramon Woods, the MVP, connected on a game high 15 points and Dereck Francis chipped in with 12. D'Nagio Fowler paced the losers with 11. 14U championshipship Panthers 31 Reapers 25 Christian Wilson was named the MVP after he poured in a game high 12 points to lead the attack for IBA. Mathius Joseph added seven.

In the loss, Caz Bethel and Rahj Bain boh had seven and Cagden Deveaux helped out with six. IBA led 11-7 after the first quarter and 21-14 at the half. They got outscored 7-4 in the third, but returned the favour with a 6-4 advantage in the fourth to seal the deal. "We didn't put their best effort out today," said Reapers' coach Zachary Bethel. "We lacked the defensive intensity and we missed a lot of lay-ups. That team played well, but my team is much better than we played." Bethel said he was glad that his players got an opportunity to play during the Christmas break because it will help to sharpen their skills when they go back to school in January. 12U championship Panthers 17, T-Wolves 8 Brothers Pablo and Robert Gomez scored four points each, but it was Pablo who earned the MVP award because of his leadership skills for IBA. Mario Taylor, Ab'Gazael Saintil, Larry Alkbury and Mario Taylor all scored four in a losing effort for the T-Wolves. "We played well, but we missed a lot of free throws and we didn't get back on defence to stop them," said Kaile Almonor, coach of the T-Wolves. "This was a good tournament to keep the guys in shape." Bowles said the tournament, held from Friday to Sunday, provided a good opportunity for the teams and the players to get in some quality games over the weekend. "I think this was definitely a step in the right direction and something that the kids needed over the Christmas break," he stressed. "We were able to allow them to tighten up some things going into the season in January." As for his Panthers and Timberwolves teams, Bowles said they did extremely well. "The Panthers have been a dominant force for many years by extension Anatol Rodgers," he stated. "We had some guys who really performed during the tournament. "They had some high quality games where they were able to make the necessary adjustments, so it was beneficial to all of the teams who participated, whether they won or not." One of those games came in the final playoff spot for the 19-and-under division where Anatol Rodgers managed to get back their Government Secondary Schools Sports Association rivals RM Bailey Pacers 32-28 yesterday as well. In that game, Levan Artis scored 10 points and Jaytha Jones added eight. Keith Bonaby scored a game high 12 points and Quency Rigby got 10 in a losing effort for the Pacers, coached by Lamont 'Redhead' Armaly. It was a keenly contested match right down to the wire where Anatol Rodgers proved that they wanted it a little more than RM Bailey.

Aston Villa beats Manchester United 2-1 to seal their 10th straight victory By JAMES ROBSON AP Soccer Writer MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Morgan Rogers scored two brilliant solo goals to down Manchester United 2-1 and keep Aston Villa in the hunt for the Premier League title. The win at Villa Park yesterday was a 10th straight victory in all competitions for Unai Emery's team, which is third in the standings and three points off leader Arsenal. Rogers whipped two curling shots into the top corner - either side of Matheus Cunha's goal for United.
The midfielder fired Villa in front in the 45th minute when cutting in from the left. His second came in the 57th - again curling the ball beyond the dive of United goalkeeper Senne Lammens. The win maintains Villa's outstanding run, which has seen it win 11 of its last 12 games in the league. “Our supporters should be proud of everything we are doing together,” Emery said. Wins on Saturday for Arsenal and second-placed Manchester City saw the top two pull away. But Villa’s latest victory was
another show of its title credentials since recovering from a desperate start to the season. Villa's emergence as a surprise contender comes after it lost two of its first three games and was winless in five. Now it is unbeaten in 19 games in all competitions, with 16 wins during that run. It was Rogers' second double in as many games after scoring twice in last week's 3-2 win at West Ham. “Sometimes it’s your day, sometimes it isn’t, and luckily lately it’s been my day,” he told Sky Sports. “I'm
feeling really confident and enjoy my football, but it's not just me, it's the team.” Defeat was another blow for United, which is seventh in the standings after winning just two of its last eight games. But coach Ruben Amorim believes his team is heading in the right direction. “I think we are improving ... I think we deserve so much more today, but the better team didn’t win,” he said. Cunha leveled the game at 1-1 by scoring from a tight angle in the third minute of added time in the first half.
He could have equalised again after the break but blew a golden chance when heading wide from in front of the goal. “We were really unlucky today,” Amorim added. Another setback for United was an injury for Bruno Fernandes, who was substituted at halftime after pulling up late in the first half. "I think it’s soft tissues, so it’s going to take a while. We’ll see,” Amorim said. United was already without Kobbie Mainoo due to a calf injury and the suspended Casemiro. Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and
Noussair Mazraoui were also missing because they are playing in the Africa Cup of Nations. In their absence, academy graduates Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey came on for their Premier League debuts in the second half. Fletcher is the son of former United midfielder Darren Fletcher. They became the first father and son to play for United in the Premier League. “During this year, especially in this time, we have so many problems, but we have to cope with that,” Amorim said.

‘VJ’ Edgecombe and Maxey help 76ers hand Knicks their second home loss of the season By BRIAN MAHONEY AP Basketball Writer NEW YORK (AP) — Tyrese Maxey scored 30 points, rookie Valdez “VJ” Edgecombe had 23 and the Philadelphia 76ers became just the second visiting team to win at Madison Square Garden this season, beating the New York Knicks 116107 on Friday night. Andre Drummond, starting with Joel Embiid out because of an illness and right knee injury management, had 14 points and 13 rebounds. The centre was 3 for 4 from 3-point range. The 76ers snapped the Knicks’ six-game winning streak by outscoring them 28-20 in the fourth quarter, when Maxey scored 11 points and Jalen Brunson missed all five of his shots and was scoreless. Maxey and Edgecombe combined for 18 points in the fourth quarter after the 76ers led by one going into the period. The Knicks were 1 for 8 on 3s in the quarter. Brunson finished with 22 points, nine assists and six rebounds, but shot 7 for 22 a night after making the go-ahead 3-pointer with 4.4 seconds left in a victory at Indiana. Karl-Anthony Towns also scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. In their first home game since winning the NBA Cup on Tuesday, the Knicks fell to 13-2 at home. They had been off to their best start at MSG since 1992-93. They celebrated the Cup title before the game, though they have chosen not to hang a banner to commemorate it, as previous champions the Lakers and Bucks did. The Knicks wasted Mitchell Robinson’s best game of the season. The centre had season highs of 21 points and 16 rebounds and was a stunning 7 for 8 at the free-throw line after he came into the game 6 for 27 (22.2%) for the season. Mikal Bridges also scored 21 points. CELTICS 129, HEAT 116 BOSTON (AP) — Derrick White scored a season-high 33 points and tied a career-high with nine 3-pointers to help Boston pull away in the second half for a win over Miami. Jaylen Brown added 30 points, nine rebounds and seven assists to help the Celtics snap a twogame losing skid. Anfernee Simons finished with 14 points. The Celtics took control in the fourth quarter, using a 20-7 run to open a 112-96 lead. It grew to 19 points.

Bam Adebayo finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Heat had 102 field goal attempts and connected on 19 3s but shot just 39% from the field overall. Miami dropped to 5-9 on the road this season. Rookie Kasparas Jakucionis added 17 and had five 3-pointers in his first career start. Miami had only 10 players available with Tyler Herro out for the fifth time in six games with a toe injury, and Andrew Wiggins (lower back pain), Nikola Jovic (elbow), Davion Mitchell (sprained left ankle) and Pelle Larsson (sprained left ankle) all sidelined as well. SPURS 126, HAWKS 98 ATLANTA (AP) — Victor Wembanyama scored 26 points, Devin Vassell added 18, and San Antonio spoiled the first of a five-game home stretch for Atlanta with a win. The win was the Spurs’ 20th of the season — a feat the team did not reach until Jan. 23 last season. In his fourth game since returning from a calf injury that kept him sidelined for 12 games, Wembanyama
added 12 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal. It was the center’s first double-double since San Antonio’s Nov. 14 loss to Golden State. Vassell was 4 of 9 beyond the three-point arc. The Spurs led for 47:27 of 48 minutes and were up 68-44 by halftime. San Antonio extended its lead to 102-72 by the end of the third quarter, and all of the starters were done for the night midway through the fourth. Nickeil Alexander-Walker led the Hawks with 23 points in his return to the starting lineup. He was 7 of 9 from the foul line and 7 of 18 from the field. BULLS 136, CAVALIERS 125 CLEVELAND (AP) — Matas Buzelis and Nikola Vucevic each scored 24 points as Chicago pulled away in the fourth quarter for a victory over reeling Cleveland. Vucevic, who also grabbed 15 rebounds, had 11 points and six boards in the fourth quarter as the Bulls won consecutive games for the first time since Nov. 19. They’ve also lost five of their last six home games. The game was tied at 115 before Chicago took control with a 17-8 run. Vucevic had seven points during the spurt, including a go-ahead layup. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 35 points and seven assists for the Thunder (253), who lost for the second time in three games after starting 24-1 on the heels of their NBA championship last season. Julius Randle had 19 points on just 3-for-15 shooting, but his missed free throw after a make with 53 seconds remaining allowed the Wolves to keep the ball down by two and set up Edwards for his clutch shot. Edwards, who’s been managing soreness in his right foot, then grabbed a defensive rebound to set up two free throws by Randle and stole the ball from Gilgeous-Alexander on the

Donte DiVincenzo and Naz Reid each scored 15 points and Rudy Gobert had 14 rebounds for the Wolves (18-10), who lost in five games to the Thunder in the Western Conference finals last spring. With the beginning of the holiday break, a national broadcast and the defending champion Thunder in town, the atmosphere at Target Center was especially revved up — and so was Timberwolves coach Chris Finch. He was ejected midway through the first quarter after some non-calls he argued were fouls on the Thunder, restrained by his assistants and team security as he continued his vehement complaints at the officiating crew.

Jalen Hurts and Eagles win their second NFC East title in a row by beating Commanders By The Associated Press LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — This was not a terrific performance by the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, from a fumble on the opening kickoff to a pair of penalties on the tush push to three wide-left field-goal tries to a halftime deficit. Still, Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and company eventually got going in the right direction and clinched a second consecutive NFC East title by beating the Washington Commanders 29-18 on Saturday night. The game included a late brawl after Barkley tacked on a 2-point conversion to increase the Eagles’ lead to 19 points. Starting plays under centre far more frequently than he did earlier in the season, Hurts completed 22 of 30 throws — with 15 of those caught by A.J. Brown or DeVonta Smith — for 185 yards, two touchdowns and no turnovers. He connected with Smith from 5 yards out in the first half and with tight end Dallas Goedert from 15 to put Philadelphia ahead 14-10 in the third quarter, capping a 17-play, 83-yard,
10 1/2-minute drive. Hurts also did plenty of damage on the ground, gaining 40 yards on seven carries for the Eagles (10-5), who have followed a three-game losing streak by winning two in a row. They are the first team to top the NFC East in back-to-back seasons since Philadelphia did it every year from 2001 to 2004; the gap since then was the longest drought without a repeat champ for any division in NFL history. Barkley added a 12-yard TD run for the Eagles, part of his 21-carry, 132-yard performance. BEARS 22, PACKERS 16 (Overtime) CHICAGO (AP) — Caleb Williams threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to DJ Moore in overtime, and Chicago overcame a 10-point deficit late in the fourth quarter for a win over Green Bay, who lost quarterback Jordan Love to a concussion. The Bears (11-4) extended their lead in the NFC North to 1 1/2 games over the Packers (9-5-1) with two left to play and got some payback for a loss at Lambeau Field two weeks earlier. (AP Photo/Stephanie Scarbrough) sixth win this season after trailing in the final two minutes and its most incredible — Green Bay had a win
probability of 99%. Chicago moved closer to its first trip to the postseason since 2020 with a rare victory in the
NFL’s oldest rivalry. Counting the playoffs, the Bears are 7-30 against Green Bay since 2008. They would
clinch a playoff berth if old nemesis Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Cairo Santos kicked a 43-yard field goal that got Chicago within 16-9 with 1:59 remaining. The Bears had no choice but to try an onside kick, and Josh Blackwell recovered it. The Bears tied it with 24 seconds left when Williams beat an all-out blitz on fourth down and lofted a pass to a wide-open Jahdae Walker in the right corner of the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown. Coach Ben Johnson opted to have Santos kick the tying extra point rather than go for the 2-point conversion. In overtime, the Packers had fourth-and-1 at the Chicago 36 when backup quarterback Malik Willis fumbled the snap. Chicago took over at the 36 and, four plays later, Moore hauled in the winning TD from Williams with Keisean Nixon draped all over him, setting off a wild celebration. Two weeks earlier, Nixon sealed the Packers’ win when he intercepted Williams in the end zone.
Panthers take 1st place in NFC South with 23-20 win over Bucs By The Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Bryce Young threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns, Lathan Ransom intercepted Baker Mayfield with 42 seconds left and the Carolina Panthers beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-20 yesterday to take over first place in the NFC South. The Panthers (8-7) can wrap up the division title next Sunday with a win over Seattle and a Buccaneers (7-8) loss to Miami. However, if both teams win or both teams lose, the Panthers would need to beat Tampa Bay again on the road in Week 18 to claim their first division title since 2015. Tetairoa McMillan had six catches for 73 yards and a touchdown as the Panthers once again bounced back with a huge win after a potentially devastating loss to the last-place New Orleans Saints. Ransom had a huge mistake in that defeat with a late hit on Saints QB Tyler Shough that led to New Orleans’ winning field goal. But with the Bucs driving for a tying field goal — or a go-ahead touchdown — there was a miscommunication on a second-and-9 pass play between Mayfield and Mike Evans at the Carolina 42 and Ransom got an easy pick to seal the win. Mayfield came into the game 4-0 against Carolina since being cut by the Panthers in 2022. But the No. 1 pick in 2018 completed just 18 of 26 passes for 145 yards with one TD pass to Evans on the game’s opening drive as the struggling Bucs lost their third straight game. With the game tied at 20 midway through the fourth quarter, Emeka Egbuka hauled in his first catch of the game, a 40-yard reception down the middle of the field, to get the Bucs to midfield. But the Panthers forced a Bucs punt, giving Young the ball back with 4:46 left at the Panthers 27. JAGUARS 34, BRONCOS 20 DENVER (AP) — Trevor Lawrence threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score, leading Jacksonville to a resounding win that snapped Denver’s 11-game winning streak. The AFC South-leading Jaguars (11-4) won their sixth straight game and handed the Broncos (12-3) their first loss since Week 3. It was also Denver’s first loss at home since Oct. 13, 2024, snapping the Broncos’ 12-game home winning streak. The Broncos’ lead over the Los Angeles Chargers
in the AFC West was sliced to a single game. The teams play in Week 18. After Broncos rookie RJ Harvey pinballed his way for a 38-yard touchdown to tie it at 17 on the opening drive of the second half, it was all Jacksonville. Lawrence scored on a 1-yard keeper, then hit Parker Washington for 63 yards to set up Travis Etienne Jr.’s 10-yard TD catch. After Bo Nix fumbled his exchange with running back Jaleel McLaughlin, Lawrence drove Jacksonville on its fifth consecutive score, a 26-yard field goal by Cam Little that made it 34-17 early in the fourth quarter. Parker caught six passes for a career-best 145 yards and a TD. CHARGERS 34, COWBOYS 17 ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Justin Herbert threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score and Los Angeles closed in on a playoff spot with a victory over Dallas. The Chargers’ fourth consecutive victory gave them a chance later in the day to clinch their second postseason berth in two seasons under coach Jim Harbaugh. LA (11-4) would be in with a loss or tie by either Indianapolis or Houston. Dak Prescott had TD passes on his first two drives but couldn’t find the end zone again for Dallas, which was eliminated from the playoffs for the second year in a row with Philadelphia’s NFC East-clinching victory at Washington on Saturday. The Cowboys (6-8-1) have lost three in a row since a three-game winning streak that put them over .500 for the only time in coach Brian Schottenheimer’s first season. In his third full game with his broken non-throwing (left) hand heavily protected, Herbert led the Chargers to touchdowns on all three drives in the first half. Omarion Hampton scored on a 5-yard run in the second half. A 23-yard TD toss to Quentin Johnston, who played college football a few miles from the home of the Cowboys at TCU, was followed by 25-yarder to Ladd McConkey before Herbert’s 1-yard plunge on a modified version of the tush push. Johnston had four catches for 104 yards. VIKINGS 16, GIANTS 13 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — J.J. McCarthy ran for a touchdown before leaving with an injury to his right, throwing hand, and backup quarterback Max Brosmer helped Minnesota win its third game in a row, beating New York
in a matchup of teams eliminated from playoff contention. McCarthy was injured on a strip sack by Brian Burns in the final minute of the first half, when it appeared the Vikings (7-8) were going to let the clock run out. Instead, Burns forced McCarthy to fumble with a crushing hit and Tyler Nubin returned it 27 yards for a touchdown. Brosmer led a go-ahead scoring drive in the fourth quarter that ended with Will Reichard making a 30-yard field goal. The rookie completed 7 of 9 passes for 52 yards in his fourth NFL appearance and first since throwing four interceptions Nov. 30 in a 26-0 loss at Seattle. Before getting hurt, McCarthy completed 9 of 14 passes for 108 yards and had a would-be pick-6 negated by an offside penalty on Abdul Carter. After having his entire rookie year wiped out by a torn meniscus in his right knee, the 2024 No. 10 pick has missed time this season because of a concussion and a sprained right ankle. The Giants (2-13) lost their ninth consecutive game and fifth since Mike Kafka took over as interim coach when Brian Daboll was fired on Nov. 10. They have not won since Oct. 9. BILLS 23, BROWNS 20 CLEVELAND (AP) — James Cook rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns, Josh Allen played through a foot injury and the Buffalo Bills drew closer to a playoff berth with a victory over Cleveland. Ty Johnson also had a rushing score for the Bills (11-4), who have won four straight and five of six. Allen played the second half despite injuring his right foot during the second quarter. The reigning NFL MVP was favouring the foot after being sacked by Cleveland’s Myles Garrett and Alex Wright for a 22-yard loss to Buffalo’s 1-yard line with 60 seconds remaining in the first half. The half-sack gave Garrett 22 on the season. He needs one more sack in the final two games for the Browns (3-12) to pass Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt for the single-season mark. Allen was 12 of 19 for 130 yards and also rushed for 17 yards on seven carries. Shedeur Sanders completed 20 of 29 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown. He also was the Browns’ leading rusher with four carries for 49 yards. The fifth-round pick also threw two interceptions which accounted for 10 of Buffalo’s points.
Tight end Harold Fannin Jr. scored both Browns’ touchdowns, including a 1-yard run in the third quarter to get them within 23-17. Raheim Sanders rushed for 42 yards on 11 carries. He was pressed into action when Quinshon Judkins was carted off with a potentially season-ending leg injury late in the second quarter. NFL Network reported that Judkins had a broken leg. TITANS 26, CHIEFS 9 NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Cam Ward threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns, and Tennessee snapped an 11-game home skid by beating Kansas City. The Titans (3-12) improved to 1-7 at home this season with their first win at Nissan Stadium since Nov. 3, 2024. The skid matched the franchise’s worst since moving to Tennessee in 1997. With two games left, the Chiefs (6-9) are assured of their first losing record since 2012 — their most recent season without Andy Reid as their coach. Kansas City has lost four straight, its longest skid since 2017, and six of seven. A week after Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending torn ACL, his backup, Gardner Minshew, was knocked out of the game with a knee injury early in the second quarter. Ward posted his highest passer rating of this season at 122.3, and he overtook Marcus Mariota for the most yards passing by a rookie for the franchise. He helped the Titans roll up a season-high 377 yards of offence against a Chiefs defence that came in as the NFL’s eighth-stingiest in yards allowed. The rookie threw a shovel pass to Chig Okonkwo that went 7 yards to put the Titans ahead to stay late in the first half. Ward also found fellow rookie Chimere Dike for a 1-yard TD in the third quarter. Tony Pollard ran for 102 yards, giving him three straight 100-yard rushing games for the first time in his career. Tyjae Spears added a 4-yard rushing TD, and Joey Slye had a 27-yard field goal for the final margin. SAINTS 29, JETS 6 NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Chris Olave caught touchdown passes from Tyler Shough and Taysom Hill, Charlie Smyth tied a Saints record with five field goals and New Orleans extended its winning streak to three with a victory over reeling New York. Cameron Jordan had two sacks for New Orleans
(5-10), giving him 130 for his career and moving the 15th-year defensive end two ahead of Hall of Famer Rickey Jackson for 17th most in NFL history. Jordan, now with a teamhigh 8 1/2 sacks this season, has had at least eight sacks in nine seasons. Shough, drafted 40th overall last spring, passed for 308 yards to eclipse 300 for the first time while improving to 4-3 as a starter. Hill accounted for 116 yards with 42 rushing, 36 receiving and his 38-yard scoring pass to Olave in the final minutes. Undrafted rookie Brady Cook made his second start with the Jets (3-12), who’ve lost three straight and five of six. Cook was sacked eight times. He lost a fumble when ex-Jet Nathan Shepherd flattened him and defensive end Chase Young recovered, leading to Smyth’s 50-yard field goal. Cook also was intercepted by rookie safety Jonas Sanker on a fourthdown play in the fourth quarter, leading to Smyth’s final field goal from 39 yards. He finished 22 of 35 for 188 yards. FALCONS 26, CARDINALS 19 GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Bijan Robinson gained 171 yards from scrimmage and had a touchdown catch, Kirk Cousins threw two TD passes and ran for a score, and Atlanta held on to beat Arizona. The Falcons (6-9) won for the second straight week, with both coming on the road. Arizona’s defence made a fourth-down stop at its own 40-yard line with 2:05 left, setting up a chance to tie the game or take the lead, but Atlanta’s C.J. Henderson made a diving interception of Jacoby Brissett’s pass with 1:30 remaining to seal it. Robinson had 92 yards receiving on seven catches, including a 13-yard touchdown, and added 76 yards rushing on 16 carries. The 23-year-old became the third player in franchise history to gain at least 2,000 yards from scrimmage in a season, joining Jamal Anderson (1998) and William Andrews (1981 and 1983). Arizona (3-12) has lost seven straight and 12 of 13 since starting the season 2-0. The Falcons pushed ahead 26-16 early in the fourth quarter when Cousins scored on a 1-yard run, which capped a 12-play, 66-yard drive. Arizona cut the deficit to 26-19 with 4:37 left on Chad Ryland’s 34-yard field goal,
taking advantage of Cousins’ fumble at midfield. TEXANS 23, RAIDERS 21 HOUSTON (AP) — C.J. Stroud threw a touchdown pass, Derek Stingley returned an interception for a score and Houston beat Las Vegas for their seventh straight victory and the Raiders’ ninth loss in a row. Houston (10-5) has its longest winning streak since a nine-game run in 2018. The Texans remain a game behind first-place Jacksonville — a winner in Denver on Sunday — in the AFC South. The Raiders are 2-13. Stingley’s touchdown came in the first quarter, and Ka’imi Fairbairn made three field goals to help the Texans to the win on a day when their offense struggled. Houston led by two with about eight minutes left when Stroud found a wideopen Dalton Schultz for a 1-yard touchdown strike that made it 23-14. Nick Chubb had a 30-yard run on that drive and a 23-yard pass interference call on Lonnie Johnson Jr. against Collins got Houston to the 2 to set up the score. Raiders rookie Ashton Jeanty cut the lead to 23-21 when he scored on a 51-yard run with about 5 1/2 minutes left. The rookie burst through the line before shedding a defender and waltzing into the end zone. Houston faced thirdand-20 at its 7 after that when Darien Porter was flagged for pass interference on Nico Collins to give the Texans a first down. Collins grabbed a 24-yard reception on the first play after the two-minute warning and Houston ran out the clock for the win. STEELERS 29, LIONS 24 DETROIT (AP) — Pittsburgh pushed Detroit to the brink of elimination from the playoffs, holding on for a win when Jared Goff’s touchdown on the final play was negated by an offensive pass-interference penalty on Amon-Ra St. Brown. Goff threw a fourthdown pass to St. Brown just short of the goal line. The receiver pushed off cornerback Jalen Ramsey to get free, and before the Steelers could bring St. Brown to the ground, he threw the quarterback a lateral to set up an apparent score. Officials huddled for some time on the field before announcing the decision to the dismay of the crowd. Jaylen Warren had two 45-yard touchdown runs in the fourth quarter and finished with a career-high 143 yards for the Steelers, who had a 230-15 advantage in rushing yards.

Joe Burrow throws for 309 yards and four touchdowns as Bengals rout Dolphins 45-21 By ALANIS THAMES AP Sports Writer MIAMI GARDENS, Florida (AP) — Joe Burrow is having fun playing football. The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback made that clear yesterday, after he threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-21 rout of the Miami Dolphins. “Not playing football is not fun,” said Burrow, who recently suggested he wasn't enjoying himself during an injury-plagued season, then followed it up with a listless performance against Baltimore. “Sitting in the locker room, rehabbing all day, that's not why you do it. This is why you do it right here.” Burrow rebounded from his first time being shut out, and the Bengals put together one of their most complete games of the year, despite having little at stake. Miami (6-9) and Cincinnati (5-10) were both eliminated from playoff contention last week, but the teams insisted they were still motivated for the final three games of the season. “This is the situation we're in,” Cincinnati coach Zac Taylor said. “This is what we can control. After the season we'll have a chance to reflect back on things that we've got to do differently.”
Cincinnati held a 17-14 halftime lead before blowing the game open with 28 points off four straight Dolphins turnovers. Burrow carved up Miami's defence, completing 25 of 32 throws with a 146.5 passer rating before being replaced by veteran Joe Flacco early in the fourth quarter. On a play that summed up his afternoon, Burrow evaded pressure and zipped an off-script pass across his body to a wide-open Drew Sample. That set up Samaje Perine's 4-yard TD run late in the second quarter. “That's how it's supposed to look like,” Burrow said. “That's what it's supposed to feel like. We've got to keep that feeling going these next couple of weeks.” Two of Burrow's touchdown passes went to running back Chase Brown, from 9 and 5 yards out. Brown, who finished with 66 yards rushing and 43 receiving, also had a 12-yard touchdown run. All of Brown's TDs came in the third, making him the first player this season with three scores in a single quarter. Ja’Marr Chase caught nine passes for 109 yards. Tee Higgins had an athletic 9-yard touchdown grab in the first quarter. And former Dolphin Mike Gesicki added a 17-yard TD

(AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell) before doing the Griddy in front of his old team. “Everybody needs to hold themselves accountable,” Dolphins linebacker Bradley Chubb said. “We’ve been in this same position all year. We have to figure out a way and hold ourselves to a higher standard. We’ve got two games to figure it out.”
Making the first start of his career, Dolphins rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers led two scoring drives before throwing a pair of interceptions as Miami unrivaled in the second half for the second straight week. “I was calm and I was ready for the opportunity at hand,” Ewers said.

performance at Pittsburgh, in which he threw his league-leading 15th interception. Ewers, a seventh-round pick out of Texas, has hardly taken any first-team practice reps, instead running the scout team most of the season. That didn't matter much to coach Mike McDaniel, who indicated his standard has not been met from the quarterback position and felt Ewers could provide a spark. Ewers got off to a strong start Sunday. He was 10 of 12 in the first half and was decisive and effective on play-action. Tagovailoa, who led the league in passing in 2023 but has not played up to the four-year, $212.4 million contract extension signed in 2024, was Miami's emergency third quarterback behind Ewers and veteran Zach Wilson.
