OR 97 years, the Bahamas Brass Band has positioned itself as a top-tier musical group whose main goal is ministering to the people through their music. Their reach and impact have been immense. Nevertheless, the band is not a group that rests on its laurels, nor is it satisfied with its accomplishments thus far. As it continues to seek ways to expand its reach in the community, adding various initiatives and providing opportunities to young people has been top on the agenda. One such initiative is offering scholarships to attend US universities. The band announced that beginning January, high school students will have an opportunity to earn a scholarship marching for a prestigious university band in the US. During the upcoming fourth annual National Brass Band Symposium, hosted at the Church of God of Prophecy, East Street Tabernacle from January 8-10, university professors from Texas Southern University (TSU), North Carolina A & T State University (NCAT) and Langston University (LU) will be in attendance. These professors will conduct workshops on music and band arrangements, student/musicianship. Also taking part will be representatives from Ministry of Education scholarship division
and US Embassy’s visa department, among others. Public Relations Officer and Symposium Coordinator G Sean Gibson said this event serves an outreach to the youth of the nation, allowing them to access their musical potential with the possibility of achieving a tertiary level education. “It is important to note, students who received scholarships in the past have earned degrees in medicine, law, accounts, engineering, music and other liberal arts studies,” he said. The two-day event will also feature an awards ceremony to honour young music educators from various high schools. There will be a $10 registration fee which will cover symposium materials, meals and prizes for both days. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the last symposium was held digitally and broadcast live via Facebook and YouTube. It featured band directors from Jackson State University (JSU), Florida A&M University (FAMU), and Prairie View A&M University (PVU). Senior students who are adept at playing a musical instrument
TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY MARCHING BAND are always invited to audition. Last year’s event saw many students display their musical skills for a chance at a scholarship. In 2020, over $300,000 in scholarships were awarded to students who auditioned at the Bahama Brass Band’s Symposium. According to the band leadership, the group is thrilled to provide talented young people an opportunity to further their education abroad. COPING WITH CHRISTMAS C
HRISTMAS is a time of much joy and jubilation, but for some this is not their present experience. If they are grieving, facing job insecurity or homelessness, there is little expectation of feeling happy, but even for them, spiritual joy may still be a source of strength. The definition of mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being, affecting how we think, feel and act, and helping to determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices. Ask yourself how you respond to the following questions: 1. How well do I think I handle stress? 2. What do I do to relieve my stress? 3. How well do I relate to others? 4. How well do I make choices?
5. How adaptable and flexible am I?
reading about prayer in the bible and other Christian literature.
If you are not happy with your answers, seek help to improve your mental health. Let us all pray to remove the stigma often attached to seeking help. Common signs that you are not coping well are:
2. Meditation: Reflect on particular topics such as love, faith, peace and joy in the bible and look around to see what nature reveals to you about wise living.
Santa arrangement so only one gift is purchased for each person within a limited price range, or some other solution to a limited cash flow. Try to focus on family being together to celebrate rather than extravagant outlay of funds.
3. Relaxation: Make time to unwind from the stresses of life and have a list of possible activities to vary your experience.
7. Worship: Worship together and put the birth of the baby Jesus back at the centre of your celebrations.
4. Medication: Know when to seek medical advice to have tests for deficiencies of any kind or to assist with out of control issues relating to your mental health.
8. Service: Help others if you can and accept help if you are in need.
1. Feeling sad or down for several weeks and not being able to cope. 2. Confused thinking or reduced ability to concentrate, even when doing familiar tasks. 3. Excessive fears or worries, or extreme feelings of guilt, which tend to replace all joy. 4. Extreme mood changes of highs and lows, that seem uncontrollable at times. 5. Withdrawal from friends and activities as a regular occurrence when this was not the case previously. 6. Significant tiredness, low energy or problems

To help you cope with Christmas, try any or all of the following:
5. Counselling: Seek a Christian counsellor, priest or pastor to listen to your thoughts and feelings and assist with developing better coping skills, referring you to a medical practitioner if symptoms worsen.
1. Prayer: Spend more time with God, engaging in prayer and
6. Gift-giving: Do your best to make gifts, have a family secret

Scriptures help Bahamians reflect on challenging year A
By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribunemedia.net
s 2021 comes to a close, Tribune Religion asked readers which Bible verses resonate with them the most as they reflect on the past year. For Barry T., its Psalm 103:2: “Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me.” He said even with the bad days that 2021 provided, it is important for him to always remember the good things that God has made possible. “I ended last year 2020 with a job and I kid you not, I started this year 2021 without a job, and that is how quickly things can happen. People’s lives change in seconds; things happen so quickly. And when you’re in the thick of a trying time, it is very hard to see the end result or to just simply think positive; it is hard. That is why it is preached to have the faith the size of a mustard seed. Mustard seed-size faith
is all you need to believe that God can and will turn things around for you for the better,” he said. Just like Barry, Annie J had her fair share of challengers. She had to come to grips with the end of her marriage during the early part of 2021, but she is ending the year with a smile on her face. She said the scripture that sticks with her is 2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come.” “You see, pain is only temporary. My, have I felt some pain in these recent years. And not only in my personal life but in the lives of people around me. Whether it was a co-worker that passed away, an old classmate that became ill
REFLECTING ON CHALLENGING YEAR and so much dark news. It has been really hard to see the light in the dark. It sounds a bit cliché saying we only have one life to live, but we do; that is it, only one. I have been embracing my every day by doing things that I love and enjoy, things that make me happy. Just like the scripture says, I am out with the old and in with the new. And this is
not a temporary feeling for me, this is a new way of live I hope to continue for the rest of my life,”said Annie. Lakiesha W. quoted a popular scripture, Philippians 4:13: “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” She said the message in the text is straight forward and applied to her daily life this year.
“When I tell you I have been weak, I have been weak. Physically I have seen my weakest days this year. It was so bad to the point where I went out with a girlfriend that I had not seen in a while and she out of the blue asked if I was OK. At that moment I felt like, ‘How does she know, am I wearing my emotions on my sleeve?’ We were
at a lounge restaurant and I legit wanted to cry right there and then because I absolutely did not feel like myself at all. I was going through something mental. And I never really gave it a name, but it was not a good place. I work from home so I found that being in the house all day, all the while being afraid to socialise with people again due to the COVID-19 virus - I was trapped in my thoughts all the day,” said Lakiesha. “I literally had to pray to God to give me strength to pick myself back up, find myself again. I wanted to feel like me. I am naturally an upbeat and life-of-theparty person. and I had lost that with all that is going on in the world. I started changing my words from ‘I’m tired’ to ‘I feel so good today’, even when I didn’t. I always tell people words are our power - speak life. That is the power God has given us, our words, so use them to speak positivity into your life. I am happy to say today I am living my best life and I have never felt better. The solution is God, no one but Him, He did that for me and continues to do so.”
THREE-YEAR ANGLICAN COURSE OFFERS ‘LIFE-CHANGING’ LESSONS Angela Cleare of St Mary the Virgin Parish recounts her enlightening experience with the Anglican Theological Institute and its teachings
I
t was in July 2015 when invitations from Bishop Laish Boyd were distributed inviting churches to attend the official launch of the Anglican Theological Institute(ATI) which would offer theological courses and training for both clergy and laity. I did not attempt to apply at that time because I was under the mistaken impression that my past participation at St Mary’s in programmes like Alpha, Education for Ministry, Discovery and Bible study was sufficient. My, was I was wrong! Fast forward to 2018; I received a call from a good friend from childhood, a psychiatrist in Freeport, Dr Jean Turnquest, about “this amazing ATI course” in which she had enrolled. As she completed each semester, she continued to rave about the wealth of knowledge she was acquiring. With her comments came my recollections of the period when I was first asked to serve on the Commission for Ministry way back in the early 1990s, with priests like Bishop Gilbert Thompson, Archdeacon William Thompson and Dean Patrick Adderley who seemed to take such a delight in quizzing the young ordinands who were studying for the priesthood. I, along with other lay persons on the committee at the time (many now deceased like Richard Crawford, Clyde Bethel, Miriam Dean, Rose King), did not always have a clear understanding of some of the spiritual topics and books the clergy were discussing and we often commented that it was a pity that there were so few mechanisms in our country for ordinary lay persons to gain such exposure. So, with this in mind, I decided to register, to find out for myself why the ATI programme was so inspiring to my friend Jean. Rodney Williams promptly provided the necessary information, and I enrolled in 2019. Now, after two years in the programme - and just one semester to go - I wholeheartedly agree with Jean that it is indeed an awesome and exemplary programme. ATI has certainly lived up to expectations to broaden one’s faith journey and spiritual horizons. We gained all we signed up for, and so much more! The Nassau group initially met at St Barnabas on Saturdays from 8am to noon, but when COVID hit, we never
ANGELA CLEARE skipped a beat, as the sessions continued virtually. The virtual programme was great for those of us who often have to travel, because we could still participate in sessions via Zoom – no matter where we were. We were indeed honoured to have two of the Caribbean’s most learned clergy – Archdeacon Drexel Gomez and Canon Basil Tynes - as anchor lecturers, providing in-depth instruction on the New Testament and Old Testament every single term. I was overwhelmed by the wealth of information they shared, the detailed notes, and the enlightening discussions. Archbishop Gomez expounded on so many basic concepts. Before we studied the gospels, he reminded us that there is actually only one gospel, but four presentations of that gospel in the Synoptics (Matthew, Mark and Luke) and in John (who used a different perspective). We explored all of these books thoroughly before graduating to the Acts of the Apostles which told how Christianity evolved, then on to other New Testament books. I was inspired after every session, so much so that
I intend to join the Archbishop’s weekly Bible study sessions after completing ATI. Father Tynes brought the New Testament to life with his in-depth explanations. He first taught us that we should use the “exegesis” method of interpreting the scriptures, which means putting the original passage back into its historical context so that we can let the passage speak to the people for whom it was intended, before attempting to apply it to a present-day context. He and the Archbishop pointed out that too often cults are born because people instead use the “eisegesis” method that does not take you back to the historical text; rather this method starts with trying to interpret the passage by attempting to “prove” whatever you discern. Actually, I feel one can get discouraged when reading the Old Testament on one’s own, but because Father Tynes put so much effort into placing the various books into context, discussing the overlaps, and explaining the issues, the material became so much easier to comprehend. Case in point, before starting the programme I had often
CALL 502-2394 TO ADVERTISE TODAY!
wondered why in certain Old Testament texts there were two versions of a particular story or text, but we learned that this is simply because there were various writers (from the Yahwist writers around 950 BC to the Deuteronomist and priestly writers around 550 BC). There were other excellent courses offered throughout the programme. Father Kirkland Russell, who conducted the course on History of the Church, explained in such detail the challenges faced by the early Church, especially the obstacles and suffering the disciples endured during the first century. Rev Marie Roach- Hepburn’s lectures on Christian spirituality, apologetics and evangelism were comprehensive and insightful. She also served as coordinator for the entire programme, with administrative support from Rodney Williams. Kudos to one of our newest priests, Rev Alison Dean, who presented the course on Liturgy and Worship. She dealt with the forms of worship, liturgies, rites and rituals. Being a musician herself, she came
armed with actual recordings to demonstrate how the liturgy of today evolved. Mary Rodland, a lay reader from Holy Cross who completed her theological training at Oxford, conducted the sessions on Christian Ethics and forced us to think about the moral and ethical decisions we make every day. When I saw on the syllabus that Archdeacon Hepburn was to conduct the course on Soteriology and Christian Eschatology, I wondered what in the world it was about. He, and also Father Roderick Bain, carried me a little outside of my safety zone. I was forced to come to terms with competing theological perspectives and appreciate that not everyone is a follower of Christ. At the end of each course, a paper on a designated subject was assigned. Most papers forced us not only to review the work covered during the course but also to engage in additional research while inserting our own ideas on the topic assigned. The paper I most enjoyed producing was the one assigned by Rev Roach Hepburn, which asked us
to explain the definition of Christian spirituality then apply this definition to a specific person from any era or any part of the world. I chose one of our own - the late Bishop Michael Eldon - whom I have always admired as a true man of God. I am overcome with appreciation that the most gifted and learned clergy - as well as trained lay persons in our diocese unselfishly give up their valuable time every week to prepare and present such comprehensive lectures, PowerPoint presentations and detailed notes, but always assigning time for questions and comments. We are nearly at the end of this wonderful programme, and there is so much more of the material to read and digest, but our lecturers have provided us with a library of detailed notes and references to which we can constantly refer, and an organised method for future study. I urge Sunday school teachers, heads of ministries, and those seeking to improve their spiritual journey to sign up for the next session.
