ADDING TO THE NATIVITY STORY THIS CHRISTMAS By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribunemedia.net

W

hile Christmas is a time of cheer, celebrations and gift-giving, it is mostly a time for spiritual reflection and gratitude. It is a time for Christians to give praise and thank God for His love of the world through the birth of Jesus. Many schools and organisations use the texts to create a Nativity play or performance to depict the story in various creative ways. A parent, Natasha Beneby, said kids were robbed of so much these past two years due the pandemic and she is glad they are getting back to some form of normalcy now. “Even though the plays are invite-only this year with a limited number of guests allowed, I am happy my daughter will be participating in her school Christmas performance. She will be performing the role of Mary in the Christmas story. Her outfit is made, she is learning her lines every day and it is so cute. I can’t wait to see my little star in action. I’m a little shy, but my superstar is far from it,” said Natasha.

The Gospels of Matthew and Luke give different accounts of the Christmas story. It is from them that the nativity story is pieced together. Both accounts tell readers that Jesus was born to a woman called Mary who was engaged to Joseph, a carpenter. The Gospels state that Mary was a virgin when she became pregnant. In Luke’s account, Mary was visited by an angel who brought the message that she would give birth to God’s son. Joseph was visited by an angel who persuaded him to marry Mary rather than send her away or expose her pregnancy. Meanwhile Matthew tells us about three wise men who followed a star that led them to Jesus’ birthplace and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Luke tells how shepherds were led to Bethlehem by an angel. Kayla Stubbs said she always enjoys recalling her childhood memories

of participating in Christmas plays. “I can even picture one of my outfits: a satin green ankle-length skirt and black long-sleeved top. I played one of the angel dancers. And Lord knows I cannot dance, but as a kid it was something I always looked forward to and it meant so much to me. I am pretty sure I was always the first one to make my mom pay my dues to participate in the service,” said Kayla. Jessica Knowles said it is not only the Christmas plays that add excitement to her household, it is also the animated Bible films they all enjoy watching together as a family. “There was one that came out a few years ago called ‘The Star’ on Netflix. Apparently, it has been out a while but I just came across it last year. I’m quoting the Netflix description here, but it is about a big-dreaming donkey who escapes his menial existence and befriends some free-spirited animal pals in this imaginative retelling of the Nativity Story,” she said. “It is so wholesome, and who would’ve thought a donkey would have me so teary eyed? For those who haven’t watched it, I’d highly recommend; it has its some comedic relief to it, but the message is present and bold. Perfect for the entire family.”

Around the world Meditation By Rev Angela C Bosfield Palacious Prayers around the world Last week, several in the Anglican Communion engaged in prayer videos and live performances sponsored by the United Society Partners in the Gospel (USPG). Practically every province was represented, and from sunrise to sunset prayers circled the globe according to the timeframe allotted to each region. It was wonderful to see the faces of all the races represented and to listen to the various languages. The pandemic has taught us how to reach out to one another in fresh and novel ways. Perhaps more of us have to devise opportunities for global unification. Is there something your group can do? Sailing around the world The Norwegian tall ship Statsraad Lehmkeuhl docked at Prince George Wharf in Nassau harbour

earlier this week, with six Bahamians on board for this leg of the journey which is part of the One Ocean Expedition circumnavigation (https:// oneoceanexpedition.com). I was blessed with an invitation to visit this amazing research vessel. The tall masts and many sails use more than 50 people to adjust them if the vessel is moving. It takes about 18 months to two years to sail around the world and collect all of the data needed to assess the impact of climate change and to document various marine species etcetera. News around the world I enjoy listening and watching television stations which cover news around the world. It is fascinating to learn of progress and development, and heart-rending to see pictures of war and suffering. We are indeed a global family, a global

village, and it still takes a village to raise a child. They are all our children. When we see parents with their children, there are many emotions which we may not express in common words, but the language of love is quite audible. If you travel and have a delay in an airport, persons often help each other to locate food, restrooms, and other amenities with signals and gestures to meet the different needs, especially if they are accompanied by children. Somehow, even with masks on, children find a way to connect with each other. Reading around the world I found a book titled, “The Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country in the World” (lonelyplanet.com). It offers 850 images of 230 countries. It is indeed a complete picture of who makes up the world. I have not yet read it word for word but the pictures are breathtaking. If you have not yet travelled far from home and it is safe and affordable to do so, I encourage you to embark on adventures of a lifetime. If you prefer documentaries and travel shows, do take advantage of the opportunity to travel without passport or visa.

CALVARY DELIVERANCE TO HOST “OUTSIDE THE FOUR WALLS WORSHIP” THIS WEEKEND MOVING its ministry into the community, the Calvary Deliverance Church, under the leadership of Bishop James Newry and Elder Queenie Newry, invites the general public to join them at their “Outside the Four Walls Worship” event this Saturday. It takes place from 10am to 1pm on the church’s grounds East Street South. Calvary Deliverance Church’s team from the 40th anniversary

committee will launch a day of compelling outreach and evangelism. “There will be a brief exhortation of God’s Word and those who are unsure of their faith will have the wonderful opportunity to be led to the Lord,” church representative said. Free tracts and Bibles will also be distributed along with free food, gifts, prizes and surprises for all. There will also be toys

for children while supplies last. Brother Derek Adams will deliver a sermon and entertainment for the entire family will be provided by Charlie the Bahamian Parrot. The church is encouraging families to make plans to come out and celebrate as they share the news of God’s goodness during this time. The event promises to be a rich and rewarding experience.

Ministering with transparency - LOCAL AUTHOR GETS CANDID IN NEW INSPIRATIONAL BOOK -

I

By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net

n order to minister properly to the people, Kayla Butler said God revealed to her that she needed to give them a window into her life, her soul, her downfalls, trials and triumphs. Being able to share wholeheartedly with others how God has impacted her life, she believes, will encourage and strengthen many people going through their own personal battles. Ms Butler has released two books, “My Heart His Home” and the “Affirming Her" journal. “My Heart His Home”, she said, is an all access pass to her spiritual journey - the good, the bad and the ugly. In the book, she details how the redemptive power of God pulled her up out

of many holes she found herself in and how God restored grace to her life. Ms Butler said she felt led to write these two books earlier this year. “People believe that Christianity must be a walk of perfection, but God is really looking for obedience. The book was one where I stood in my truth and all I had to endure from a place of brokenness and come to a realisation of knowing that God can use our broken pieces to create beautiful

messages out of our mess,” she told Tribune Religion. Being real and authentic about her life’s challenges, she admits, took great amount of willingness to show vulnerability and share her shortcomings. “It was no easy fit to stand in my truth and walk in a level of transparency that this book required of me, because like I like to often joke around and say that I don’t have one of those ‘churchy testimonies’, but I understood that the benefits of my transparency would far outweigh the cost of me taking off the mask,” the author said. “There are so many people’s lives that hang in the balance because we are too afraid to share our truth and let someone know that ‘I have been there and done that’, and God brought me out and saved, delivered me, transformed and turned my life around.”

The one thing she said she wants people to take away from this book are not the details surrounding her personal trials, but the way God showed up for her in power and love. “He never left me alone, He never gave up, He was relentless in His pursuit for me. Every time I messed up, fell short or walked away, His love came after me until I had to ultimately surrender to a love that was unmatched anywhere. I had never experienced a love like that before, and even though I didn’t know it, when it came I couldn’t deny it. It was too real to be undeniable and too potent to ever be forgotten,” she said. Her second book, "Affirming Her”, is a 30-day affirmation journal for young girls authored co- authored by 12 girls aged four to 19 who wanted the opportunity to encourage their peers to be all that God created them to be. The young co-authors are Dahlia, Angel, Devyn, Brazil,

Cassandra, Zuri, Jazriel, Dayna, Aliah, Shekinah, Brielle and Kristinique. “The Lord ministered to me one day to pay it forward. Just how others helped me on my journey, I too wanted to help other young girls not have to go through making the same mistakes. But if we can have them declare positive affirmations over their lives and they know their identity in God and begin to believe the words they declare that they are beautiful and fearfully and wonderfully made and created in the image of God, then they could stand strong and tall and conquer anything life brings,” she said. “Frederick Douglass once said, ‘It is better to build strong children than to repair broken men.’ That is what the ‘Affirming Her’ journal is about: building stronger girls who become confident women because they know who they are and society nor the world can dictate their identity to them.” Ms Butler said she sold over 250 books in three days of publishing. She hopes to keep impacting the lives of people with her writing.
