interview The Hobby Horse Hall Race Track was a hallmark of the Bahamas’ illustrious heyday. And after uncovering the facility’s impressive 200-year-old history, author Ivan James believes that its return could usher in a new era of prosperity for the country.

He speaks to Felicity Ingraham about his new book on the subject and his thoughts on how to bring horse racing back home.

ention the words “Hobby Horse Hall Race Track” to anyone in their mid-50s or older and watch their eyes light up. It’s as if you just mentioned the magic words that stir up memories of grandeur and denote a time of peace and plenty in the Bahamas. There’s no doubt that this was a significant period in Bahamian history, and Ivan James has captured it in his book, which is being released today.

“The Life and Death of Hobby Horse Hall Race Track” captures an illustrious time in Bahamian history.

In more than 400 pages of pictures and newspaper clippings, Mr James’ book does an excellent job of showing the romanticism of a time that older Bahamians seem to agree was one of the country’s best eras. The book displays many historical photos of locals who dedicated themselves to the sport as well as people from all over the world who flocked here. Mr James has uncovered two centuries worth of history and believes that the race track on New Providence may have been the very first to be established in the New World.

The Hobby Horse Hall Race Track, he believes, was established between 1790 and 1792 under the direction of Colonel Andrew Deveaux. A Loyalist to the King of England during the war of 1776, Deveaux was exiled to St Augustine, Florida. In 1782, the Spanish attacked New Providence

Deveaux heard of this and took it upon himself to sail to Harbour Island and Eleuthera with 65 men. He recruited for five days before sailing to New Providence to recapture the town of Nassau and return it back to King George II. Deveaux’s previous experience as governor of both New York and Massachusetts may have contributed to him becoming one of the most autocratic governors this country ever had, Mr James told Tribune Weekend.

An avid equestrian and a noted racer in the Carolinas, Colonel Deveaux had his engineers build a one-mile race course. It was located in the area which now consists of Baha Mar, the golf course and Prospect Ridge. Lord Dunmore, Governor of the Bahama Islands, granted 420 acres of this area to Deveaux in 1790. The remaining acreage was used as a farm for the Hobby Horse Hall Race Track.

Having a 200-year history means that the race track existed during the time of slavery, and it is known that

in the Carolinas and Virginia many slaves rode to their freedom by winning countless races for their owners.

As the years progressed, the horse racing industry became a major source of economic development for the Bahamas, Mr James said, and it was a perfect accompaniment to the rise of the country’s premier industry, tourism.

Mr James is a noted hotelier with 40 years experience in the industry.

Continued from page 3 Harbour Hotel and Golf Club, and ended in 1994 at the Crystal Palace Hotel and Casino, where he served as director of marketing, sales and public relations.

In 1971, he was honoured as the first Bahamian to be given the title of concierge of a major hotel in the country and was one of the top three Bahamian executives in the country. He went on to manage two small hotels in the Dominican Republic before returning home. Today, at the age of 78, he is a self-employed taxi driver who enjoys sharing the history of the Bahamas with visitors he encounters daily. A native of Farm Road, Mr James shares his love and passion for the land of his birth with everyone he comes into contact with.

He is certain that the Hobby Hall Race Track played an important role in the economic empowerment of Bahamians, and if reestablished, would do so again. He was serving as director of sales and marketing for the Ambassador Beach Hotel in 1977 when the race track was officially closed. At that time, he was a steward for the race track on his days off, filling in at the request of Nigel Ingraham who was the racing secretary. Sir Arthur Hanna was the Minister of Finance at the time, and he made the announcement to the public that it would be the last year of the race track at that location, but that a new track would be built on land that was allocated by the government in the Gladstone Road area.

Mr James recalled the day it all came to an end: “It was balmy day… there was rain and wind, the temperature was in the high 60s, which was unusual for that time of year… it was in April.

When my colleagues came to pick me up I waved them off because I still had my topcoat on. When I got up to the pavilion where the refreshments would be for the stewards, I saw all these canisters of racing film reels strewn all over the place, about to be discarded.”

He decided to collect some of the reels, and two decades later he took them to a company in Miami to have them restored and put onto VHS cassettes. Initially, his intention was to share the race track’s history with all those who had an affection and nostalgia for the sport like himself. But as he began a search at the Department of Archives and scanned old copies of the local newspapers, he realised that his work was of much more value than he had thought. In fact, it was of national importance.

His conclusion is that the death of horse racing in the Bahamas is intricately linked to the rise in crime in the country: “In 1977, we had about three to four murders. In 1978, the murder count rose to seven. From that time to this day with no race track, the escalation of murders has turned into a dilemma. The horse racing industry is the only thing you can measure crime by in this country, because crime was at an all-time low when the track was open here. You can’t measure crime by

anything else. I say that with authority. Horse racing is the only event that brought white and black Bahamians together, and it’s sad that the bureaucracy that has kept the race track closed for 40 years.”

Mr James said after the closure of the Hobby Horse Hall Race Track there was much anticipation from the public for a new track, as it was a source of livelihood for so many.

Today, he believes that the reestablishment of the track could result in at

least 800 jobs annually, in addition to a spinoff economic effect which could impact vendors such as horticulturalists and farmers, tailors, and those in the food service industry.

Forty years after the end of the horse racing era in the Bahamas, Mr James is today releasing his book during a special event at the Baha Mar Convention Centre. He considers it a good omen.

He is calling on the current administration to seriously consider the return of horse racing, especially as it was promised by the then government of a newly-independent Bahamas.

The layout of the one-mile oval race course in New Providence was up to the standards of the best race courses around the world, including one of the most historical, the Royal Ascot, built in 1711, said Mr James. Stake races, 100 guinea (1.1 pound) races, the Seagrams Cup and other major events were held there, all drawing international attention. Racing subsided during the time of World War I, but only for a few years. In the 1930s, racing became regulated and patrons could make wagers on horses. Beautifully manicured greens, great jockeys and a supportive government aided in its success.

“The book is a fascinating read,” said Mr James, “And I am hoping that it acts as a stimulus to create interest for the return of horse racing in the Bahamas.”

“It would bring a high diversification of jobs and would act as a stimulus to the economy from the merchant perspective. You have to buy coats, medicine, even the horticulturalists and farmers would benefit greatly – as a matter of fact, all the farms would probably be sold out. Racing is thriving today in Jamaica, Barbados, St Kitts and other countries in the region. In St Kitts, the Chinese are putting close to a billion dollars into their breeding, racing and residency programme. We were doing this long before our Caribbean brothers and sisters. Land in Andros right now is ripe for large-scale horse breeding.”

This could also serve as tool to combat crime, Mr James believes, adding that the sport builds confidence and character.

In his book, readers get a glimpse of the past and the Hobby Horse Hall Race Track with lots of pictures and interesting stories about Bahamians, foreigners and expats who were united in their love of horses and the sport of horse racing.

The only promise that Lady Dupuch, a keen horsewoman, exacted from her husband before marriage was that when she came to the Bahamas from her home in Spangler, Pennsylvania, she would always have a horse. She was 66 years old when she participated in her last equestrian event.

She and her horse, both the oldest in the show, took first prize for Equitation.

Vivid memories are captured in the page of Mr James’ book. One tells the story of Gary Bain, “The Bahamian Jockey Hero” of Augusta Street, who came under the guidance of Advis Hall. An experienced trainer, Hall recognised Gary’s potential as a super jockey from the start. Gary’s ability and courage in the handling of horses caught the eye of several trainers, and during the 1968 season, Gary was getting mounts from all of them and was proving to be a success. Gary won his first riding championship that year against other Bahamians as well as international jockeys.

Other stories capture moments where Bahamian jockeys shone, including great riders like Tyrone “Buck” Williams, Danny “The Professional” Ramsey, Austin Saunders and Howard Jolly. It talks about the 1863 Nassau Cup Race which included vehicles of all kinds, including two-horse carriages and humble mule carts.

Mr James commends the late Paul Adderley, former Minister of Education and Attorney General, for assisting in the collection of historical material for the book. He approached Mr Adderley at the

Archives and they struck up a conversation about his parents’ love for horses and the ones he grew up with. Mr Adderley, who had access to the Colonial Office Governors, dispatched files of information on horse racing in the Bahamian colony.

In the foreword of the book, former Governor General Sir Orville Turnquest congratulates Mr James, calling his book an “immense work… which not only carefully traces the chronology here of what was known as a sport of kings, but also offers social commentary on passing times.”

“I trust that this graphical historical commentary will act as a stimulus leading to the introduction of horse racing here,” said Sir Orville.

The public is invited to attend the launch of “The Life and Death of Hobby Horse Hall Race Track” at the Baha Mar Convention Centre today, from 5pm to 9pm. Books will be on sale for $50 a copy and patrons can have them autographed by Mr James, who promises an exquisite night including refreshments and entertainment. these ideas of healing, community, art, culture and of welcoming,” she told Tribune Weekend.

Worked into the gates are designs of plants like the sisal, an agave variation and the silver thatch palm, one of the few palm species native to the Bahamas and which is still used for straw products today.

Mr Ferguson has been making art for as long as he can remember. He has undergone professional training in welding, direct metal fabrication, and machine shop work. He also got into the craft of blacksmithing, which can only be mastered through long years of apprenticeship.

Known for an imaginative approach to functional items such as doors, gates, railing panels, furniture, chandeliers and signage, Mr Ferguson has developed his own style of hammered, forged and sculptural work in iron, bronze, copper, stainless steel, aluminium and found materials. His work can be found in numerous private collections and public spaces in the Bahamas, Europe, Canada, the United States, and various other countries.

While this latest work by Mr Ferguson does not necessarily represent a new chapter for the NAGB, it helps to communicate its vision of inclusiveness and expansion, said Ms Coulson.

“The NAGB has always been there for the people of the Bahamas, so to say it’s an entirely new chapter would be wrong, but how the institution has communicated its mission—and therefore how it has been perceived— perhaps hasn’t been as successful as we would have liked. Expanding our footprint through the garden and amphitheatre, wrapping music into our programming, and opening ourselves up in a visual way is how we are turning over the new leaf. So it is a new chapter in the sense that we are making an intense effort, through these new endeavours, to show that we embrace our whole, wider community, both in the immediate surroundings of the NAGB and far out into the Family Islands, and to ensure that our mission is extremely clear to the people,” she said.

On Friday, December 15, starting at 6pm, the NAGB invites the general public to the first artists’ talk and gallery walk for the new exhibition, “Medium: Practices and Routes of Spirituality and Mysticism,” with Dionne Benjamin-Smith, Jace McKinney, Samantha Moree and Allan P Wallace.

Following the conversation, Katrina Cartwright, NAGB’s education officer, will guide a walkthrough with the artists to speak about the works presented in the show. The event is free and open to the public.

HE opening night of the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas’ end-of-year show featuring more than two dozen Bahamian artists will also see the unveiling of a new entrance to the gallery grounds, framed by a set of gates by master metalworker Tyrone Ferguson.

The gates will be officially unveiled on the opening night of the “Medium: Practices and Routes of Spirituality and Mysticism” on December 14 at 7pm.

The showcasing of the “magnificent gates”, that are art and history rolled into one, culminates what has been a year-long, large-scale commission by the gallery.

Mr Ferguson, after careful consideration, took on the project, creating gates which he believes “have a sense of freedom, openness and airiness”.

And when we met with Tyrone to talk about the garden, the idea of art as a healing force for a community—just like the native plants we are growing there together with the BNT—it was a complete meeting of the minds. We excitedly shared this vision of a set of beautiful gates that would unite the NAGB with its garden—on a site tied to the first African hospital, hence the street name, and speak to

NDING 2017 on a strong, and even critical note, the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas will present a mixed media exhibition that explores, interrogates and challenges the core beliefs of Christianity which the Bahamas was built on.

“Medium: Practices and Routes of Spirituality and Mysticism” opens on December 14 at the gallery beginning at 7pm. It will feature the works of 33 artists, mostly Bahamian, with the inclusion of works by Jamaican artist Carl Abrahams and Haitian artist Jean Louis David.

“It is important for any institution in a developing country within the nascent stages of its nationhood to grapple with how Christianity and other religions, religious beliefs, spiritual practices and rituals function in the social space,” said Holly Bynoe, chief curator.

“It also gives voice to demographics that might feel marginalised, like Rastafari, other Afro-Caribbean communities, and other Diasporas, particularly the Haitian communities, that have a different awareness of spirituality. The Bahamas is more complex than the monolithic narrative it presents. We want to use this show to unearth and show that.”

The show will also feature the unveiling of a large-scale commission which has been a year in the making – a new entrance to the NAGB grounds from West Hill Street through a magnificent set of gates by master metalworker Tyrone Ferguson.

Guests at the opening event will also be greeted by Rhythm n’ Youth performing in the brand new 150-seat amphitheatre, which is close to completion, before proceeding into the exhibition itself.

The NAGB typically turns over its temporary galleries in Spring and Fall each year. The popular National Exhibition 8 was opened around the same time last year. It was a resounding success, boating the largest turnout the gallery has seen in years, Ms Bynoe said.

“Having openings and unveiling at the end of the year gives us a moment to celebrate and move into the new year with a different kind of hope around our creative culture and ecosystem. Plus, everyone wants to have a good time and unwind, and we will be offering different types of entertainment on the opening night. “We chose most of the works from two illustrious collections and with partners who we have an established working relationship with, and these include the Dawn Davies Collection, of which we are borrowing 37 works, and the D’Aguilar Art Foundation, of which we are borrowing 25 works.

Other works were borrowed directly from artists and or other collections that fit into the thematic of exploring spiritual practices that fall within the boundaries of Christianity and those that contest that,” said Ms Bynoe.

The legend of John Canoe Sir Christopher Ondaatje speculates on the origins of the dynamic Bahamian street parade known as Junkanoo.

T

here are still arguments about the origin of the word Junkanoo, but it is likely the word is derived from John Canoe (or Jon Kenu).

He was an influential Gold Coast merchant who amassed a powerful private army in Axim on the coast of Ghana

in West Africa, and who was an ally of Brandenburg-Prussia at the time of the Brandenburger Gold Coast colony from 1683 to 1717.

Legend relates that between 1708 and 1717, Jon Kenu helped keep control of the Brandenburger fortress and defended it against powerful attempts by the Dutch to conquer it from the Prussians. The historical facts of the defence of the fortress were then distorted and used by German administrators for their own colonial propaganda in the 19th century.

The name John Canoe is almost certainly a European corruption of the African name Jon Kenu – a typical Akan name. He is known in history to have been a prince or chief of the Ahanta ethnic group who directed trade away from the Dutch forts at Axim, Butre and Sekondi towards the Prussians at the Brandenburg fortress.

Brandenburg sold its possessions to the Dutch in 1717 without Jon Kenu’s knowledge. It is estimated that Kenu’s private army then totalled as many as 15,000 men made up mostly of Ashanti and Wassa warriors. After the Brandenburg fortress had been sold,

Kenu transferred his loyalty away from the Prussians, outwitted the Dutch and the English, and took control of the abandoned fort in 1718. News of this victory spurred celebrations which quickly spread to the British West Indies, making Jon Kenu an instant folk hero.

His victory has been celebrated ever since as the Jon Kenu (or Junkanoo) festival, although his stronghold was eventually destroyed by the British after which Ahanta, Nzima and Ashanti captives were taken to the British colonies as prisoners of war and turned into slaves. Jon Kenu, however, escaped to Kumasi – the capital of his Ashanti allies – after which he vanished into obscurity.

Junkanoo developed from the days of slavery. The influx of Loyalists in the late 18th century into the Bahamas brought many enslaved people here who were given a three-day holiday at Christmastime which they celebrated by singing and dancing wearing colourful masks, travelling from house to house, often on stilts.

Junkanoo nearly vanished after the abolition of slavery in 1833 in England,

and eventual emancipation in North America in 1865, but its revival now provides entertainment for many thousands of people.

Musicians have perfected their hypnotic rhythms, and imaginative costume designers work many hundreds of hours weaving their own special magic with beautifully coloured crepe paper and cardboard. Performers produce a cacophony of music blending complicated rhythms from goatskin drums, cowbells, whistles, horns, bugles and conch shells. Spectators watch this colourful event every Christmas from balconies, trees and elevated pedestals as the parade snakes its way through the streets of downtown Nassau.

According to Edward Long, an 18th century Jamaican slave owner, the Junkanoo festival as we know it today was created first in Jamaica and quickly spread to other parts of the Caribbean by enslaved Akans who had fought with Jon Kenu in Ghana. The festival itself included battle motifs typical of Akan fashion. The Ashanti swordsman became the “horned headed man”, and the Ashanti Commander became “Pitchy Patchy” – who also wears

a battledress with what would resemble charms referred to as a “Batakari”.

Historian Stephen Nissenbaum described the festival as it was performed in 19th century North Carolina: “Essentially, it involved a band of black men – generally young – who dressed themselves in ornate and often bizarre costumes. Each band was led by a man who was variously dressed in animal horns, elaborate rags, female disguise, white face and wearing a gentleman’s wig, or simply his ‘Sunday-go-to-meeting’ suit. Accompanied by music, the band marched along the roads from plantation to plantation, town to town, accosting whites along the way and sometimes even entering their houses. In the process the men performed elaborate and (to white observers) grotesque dances that were probably of African origin. And in return for this performance they always demanded money (the leader generally carried a small bowl or tin cup for this purpose), though whiskey was an acceptable substitute.”

Douglas Chambers, the Professor of African Studies at the University of Southern Mississippi, suggests Junkanoo had a possible Igbo origin in Nigeria from the Igbo yam deity Njoku Ji, creating celebrations in time for the new yam festival. Chambers also suggests a link with the Igbo Okonko masking tradition of Southern Igboland which features horned masks and other masked characters in similar style to Junkanoo masks. Similarities with the Yoruba Egungun festivals have also been identified. But this is an unlikely speculation. An Akan origin is far more likely because of the timing of the fancy dress masquerades at the end of each year heralding Jon Kenu’s heroic achievements on the Gold Coast in Ghana.

The Junkanoo festival blossomed several centuries ago in the Bahamas when slaves in plantations took part in the celebrations which have now became an indigenous expression unique to Bahamian culture.

It is the closest link the country has with its African heritage and is a quintessential Bahamian celebration. The annual festival has been compared to Mardi Gras in New Orleans and Carnival in Rio, and the parade traditionally moves clockwise downtown in Nassau through Bay Street, Elizabeth Avenue, Shirley Street, Frederick Street, King Street, and finally George Street.

Every year there are more creative innovations and displays, sometimes 15 or 20 feet high. Costumes are fiercely guarded secrets, and when they are finally rolled out during the midnight run the parade’s rhythmic music, spectacularly colourful headpieces and uniforms, and sometimes uninhibited dancing provide a never to be forgotten annual festival of fun, frivolity and revelry.

Celeb stylist, Instagram star to slay Nassau’s new hair show

o help talented Bahamians get their moment in the limelight, VH1’s Shekinah Jo Anderson and Instagram star Prince Marnie will be lending their skills to the first annual “Slay Bosses” hair and beauty event to be held in Nassau on December 17.

Presented by Timing Family Entertainment and held at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, the showcase strives to give talented hairstylists and beauticians a platform to show off their skills.

In addition to the main competition, “Slay Bosses”, which is for entrants ages 18 and over, there will be the “Pretty Girls on Fleek” for high school students.

The show will be hosted by “Suzan”, a popular character played by Instagram star and comedian Prince Marni. It will also feature Shekinah Jo Anderson as the international guest judge. A renowned Atlanta stylist,

VH1 star Shekinah Jo Anderson Shekinah has appeared on reality TV shows like VH1’s “Family Hustle”, We TVs “Tamar & Vince” and BET’s “Tiny&Toya”. She has also launched a T-shirt line called ‘I WORK HARD’, a term she coined while filming “Family Hustle”, and debuted her own hair care line, Beautiful Edges.

“Pretty Girls On Fleek” will feature government high schools students from the cosmetology department going up against each other in competition.

Each school will be presented by two students. Winners will receive a scholarship to further their education at BTVI. “Each student will have to slay there models live on stage in two different styles. All participants on stage at the same time and will be judged on completion,” said Wilmin.

Wilmin and Dion are two childhood friends who have had a years-long dream to highlight hidden talent in country.

Their partnership has seen them host parties, talent and other entertainment events, and now they hope their “Slay Bosses” show will become an annual occasion.

“We decided to host a hair and beauty show because we are quite aware that there are plenty young, aspiring, talented young ladies and men who aren’t afforded the opportunity to be exposed in beauty,” said Wilmin.

At the show, guests can expect to be “thoroughly entertained,” the duo said.

Jeweller won’t make replicas for Meghan Markle’s ring THE JEWELLERY maker who worked on the engagement ring Prince Harry gave to Meghan Markle says it’s been inundated with requests for replicas— but it won’t be taking any orders for copycat rings.

Stephen Connelly, director of Cleave and Company, told The Associated Press the intense media attention has been “a bit of a shock.” He added: “We’re not going to be making replicas of it. If you want a ring, then we’ll design you a different one.”

Harry has said he sourced a diamond from Botswana for the yellow gold engagement ring, which also features smaller diamonds that had belonged to his mother, Princess Diana, so she could be with them “on this crazy journey together.”

Farah says: “I always think when it comes to fashion only one statement piece is needed. Selena has two – the beautiful cut leather pants and bold gold belt. It is a winning combination, especially with Selena’s new blonde tresses. Is Selena a good girl gone bad?”

Karin says: “Wait, are we still trying to bring back the 80s’ power shoulder pads? I thought that trend resurrection had failed. I guess this qualifies as a futuristic take on it. I don’t hate the dress, but I don’t think Kehlani can pull it off. She’s trying to make a statement, but fails.”

Farah says: “I believe that only the late, great Micheal Jackson could pull off the exaggerated shoulders. With that being said, this dress is a complete disaster. While I like the pewter colour, the deep plunge neckline looks very weird when paired with the unusual shoulder pads. It’s a hell no for me!”

Karin says: “This is truly tragic. It’s like she cut the legs off of one of those silky pyjamas that are meant to look like a pinstripe suit. Let me go dig up my old set and make a red carpet outfit out it.

And don’t get me started on the hair and makeup...”

Acclaimed drama “Mudbound” to close BIFF 2017

T

he Bahamas International Film Festival (BIFF) announced yesterday that Netflix’s highly acclaimed drama “Mudbound”, directed by Dee Rees, will be the official closing night film at this year’s festival, which takes place December 10-17. The announcement was made by BIFF founder and executive director Leslie Vanderpool.

Carey Mulligan (”The Great Gatsby”), Mary J Blige, Jason Clarke (”Zero Dark Thirty”), Garrett Hedlund (”TRON: Legacy”), Jonathan Banks (”Better Call Saul”) and Jason Mitchell (”Straight Outta Compton”) lead the ensemble cast of “Mudbound”.

Set in the rural American South during World War II, “Mudbound” is an epic story of two families pitted against one another by a ruthless social hierarchy, yet bound together by the

shared farmland of the Mississippi Delta.

Mudbound follows the McAllan family, newly transplanted from the quiet civility of Memphis and unprepared for the harsh demands of farming. Despite the grandiose dreams of Henry (Jason Clarke), his wife Laura (Carey Mulligan) struggles to keep the faith in her husband’s losing venture.

Meanwhile, Hap and Florence Jackson (Rob Morgan and Mary J Blige), sharecroppers who have worked the land for generations, struggle bravely to build a small dream of their own despite the rigidly enforced social barriers they face. The war upends both families’ plans as their returning loved ones, Jamie McAllan (Garrett Hedlund) and Ronsel Jackson (Jason Mitchell), forge a fast but uneasy friendship that challenges the brutal realities of the Jim Crow South in which they live.

BIFF 2017 takes place from December 10-13 in Harbour Island and December 14-17 in Nassau. The festival’s opening night in Harbour Island will begin with a screening of Sean Baker’s critically acclaimed drama “The Florida Project” starring Willem Dafoe.

“By All Means: A Rock n’ Roll Story” comes home to premiere at BIFF

ilmed inside Lenny Kravitz’s private recording studio, Gregory Town Sound, and the former site of the legendary Compass Point Studios, and starring local talent Sammy Taylor, “By All Means: A Rock n’ Roll Story” will have its world premiere at the Bahamas Film Festival next week.

The movie will be shown on December 12 in Harbour Island and again at Baha Mar on December 14.

Produced by local entrepreneur/ organic farmer Edgar Seligman and London-based production company Rabbit in the Moon Productions, the film is a hilarious and touching insight into life on the road of a struggling rock band desperate to make it big by all means and against all the odds.

being an internationally renowned frontman.

Sammy struggles for many years with various bands in Australia and Europe before discovering at the age of 30 that his estranged father was in fact one of Spain’s biggest rock icons. Setting off to

seek his fortune in the land of his father, Sammy soon forms a band with Charlie Cepeda, a guitar hero from Seville who knew his father. Unable to get signed despite being Spain’s No 1 rock band, they head off on tour to America, the heartland of rock n’ roll, where they

are certain their authentic sound will be appreciated. Unfortunately, the tour is a complete disaster...that is until a chance encounter with Lenny Kravitz and Craig Ross in the Bahamas promises to change everything.

Rabbit in the Moon Productions was founded in 2015 by brother and sister team Patrick and Siobhan Hewlett.

BIFF’s ‘I Do?’ takes a fun look at the concept of marriage

H

ow do you love just one person forever? Is monogamy real, healthy, or even possible? How do we stay married?

When Joe Brandmeier asked himself these questions, he found himself on a journey which unfolded into his first feature documentary, “I Do?”. He is proud to have his project featured at this year’s Bahamas International Film Festival (BIFF) so that others could take a fun, light-hearted look at their relationships and develop new ways to cement their bonds.

He’s been married for 28 years and knows many others who are married or thinking about it, or not wanting to do it, and so on. He thought of marriage as “a silly concept”, so curiosity was the driver that led him to ask where it comes from and why people get married in the first place.

“There was a tough patch in our marriage around year 18. Both of us exhausted and thinking it was time to go our separate ways,” Joe shared.

“I had my bags packed and I was sitting at the bottom of our stairs at home. My wife (Joan Steffend, also the executive producer on the film) looked at me, with her beautiful voice and face, and said: ‘You know, we’re better together than we are apart’. That comment is really a big part of what drives the documentary. Why are we better together? I had to find out if others felt the same way as me. It was great, fun, free therapy!”

Joe has worked on documentaries with legendary music producers like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and spent months with Prince. He travelled to Haiti and produced several music videos with Wyclef Jean and has also directed Emmy-winning broadcast specials in his career.

“This is the first time I did my own thing,” he told Tribune Weekend.

“I was way out of my comfort zone by putting myself out there in front of the camera with such a personal topic.

On Sunday, BIFF 2017 will launch in Harbour Island with the opening film to be viewed at the Romora Bay Resort. The festival will make Harbour Island its home from December 10-13 before it comes to New Providence from December 14 - 17. “I Do?” will play at both locations.

BIFF is Joe’s last film festival round for his “I Do?” documentary. It was first viewed about a year ago in Singapore, then moved on to Montreal with, “a few other stops in between”. Then it won best documentary at the Twin Cities Film Festival in Minnesota.

“It’s been resonating with people around the world,” said Joe. “I think it’s because it’s a lighthearted look at a universal subject. I also think people are tired of such negative stuff out in the world today. This is a little relief from that. It’s a way to connect with others through true stories, shared by real people.”

When Joe was researching festivals he could enter his first project into, he said “BIFF just kept coming up all the time”.

“I thought it was worth the shot.

It’s not your normal documentary, so I was thrilled when I heard from Leslie Vanderpool (BIFF founder and executive director) that I was an ‘official selection’ for her festival. I’m very honoured. I love people, love travelling and being in the screenings to feel the energy from a crowd of people and their laughter and tears. It’s a very cool, humbling feeling,” he said.

Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Joe is excited that his film is being viewed in a tropical paradise. His current location is bitterly cold compared to the Bahamas, and for that reason, he said, ideas for future projects that would bring him to this country are now coming to mind.

“I’ve heard good things about the Bahamas and I would love to shoot down there someday with my other projects. I live where it’s very cold now, below zero, so I’m sure you can understand my overall excitement,” he said.

Joe hopes that viewers will take away a connection with one or more of the couples featured in the documentary and find something that rings true for their relationship.

People will walk away with what resonated with them – not from anything I said or did in the documentary.”

How to grow the perfect onion If you started your vegetable garden in August, onions will be the last major crop to be established, says Jack Hardy

N

on-bulbing onions such as scallions could have been sown earlier, but the standard onion that produces an underground bulb needs lengthening days in order to grow properly and now is the time to sow them.

In addition to requiring lengthening days, the actual length of day is important to onions. At the maturing and ripening stage some onions require long daylight time while others can bulb satisfactorily with short daylight hours. On each packet of seeds you will find the designation Long Day, Short Day or Day Neutral. Here in the Bahamas we must use Short Day or Day Neutral onions.

Onions take five months from seed to harvest so you

Freshly harvested onions can expect to be pulling them up in May. Plant your seed in trays and move them to your garden when they are about six inches tall, burying about three inches deep.

The perfect soil for onions is sand with plenty of additional compost. All the onion family enjoy compost and its addition is important. Some gardeners like to cut off the ends of the onion greenery at transplanting time.

The plants should be sown four to five inches apart depending on the expected size of the mature onions.

They can be sown in rows but I prefer them grown on blocks, much more convenient for smaller gardens. Once the roots have developed the crop should receive side dressings of fertilizer every month.

Onions are not too demanding when it comes to water but should never be allowed to be distressed.

Water them deeply twice a week and that should suffice.

I have never had any insect problems with onions and I doubt if you will either.

Onions are bulbs that have a layer for every tubular leaf. Lots of leaves means lots of layers and the promise of large bulbs. When the

foliage dies and loses colour it is time to pull the onions and remove the roots with scissors or fingers. Leave the onions – complete with dry foliage – on the ground for about a week, turning them every day to toughen up the outer skin in sunlight.

When you buy onions from the store they are neatly trimmed, but that trimming took place after the onions had been seasoned for a period. Onions from your garden should have at least two inches of dry foliage attached. The very top of the onion is the last place to heal and become seasoned and any damage at this point will cause the onion to start rotting.

A better alternative is to leave the foliage completely intact and plait the leaves – or gather them and tie them with string. Bunches of about a dozen onions can then be hung in shaded areas that are well ventilated. Onions have differing keeping qualities that will appear on the seed packet and an onion variety with good keeping qualities can be hung for three or four months.

An onion bag is made of netting, which allows for excellent ventilation. If you

keep your onions in a hung onion bag you should massage the onions every few days so that all bulbs receive the benefit of light and breeze.

Yellow onions are the strongest in flavour, those that bring tears to your eyes when you peel them. White onions are mild and excellent for salads. The sweetest onions are red and these are perfect for reducing over low heat to a jam-like consistency.

Leeks are not popular in The Bahamas but are so easy to grow and tasty that I would encourage you to try them. They do not bulb and produce stalks or stems that can be several inches in diameter but are best used when an inch or inch and a half in diameter. Only the white part of the stem is used and that can be extended by burying the young plants deeply and allowing soil to do the blanching.

Allow your leek seedlings to reach pencil thickness in the seed tray and transplant them six inches apart in blocks. The end of a broomstick is a great tool for transplanting leeks. Press it into the ground about five or six inches deep and then

work your leek seedling into the hole produced, making sure all the roots are intact and below the stem.

Leeks are not cured and should be used soon after being harvested. Peel off the outer skin and cut off the green part and root end.

You will have a cylinder of white flesh that can be sliced and added to soups and stews. Leeks have the quality of melting into their liquid matrix and producing a wonderfully rich but mild onion flavour.

Scallions are easy to grow and are immensely rewarding. So many dishes are made using bulbing onions that should instead use scallions. Raw scallions beat out raw onions in uncooked dishes such as conch salad, tuna salad and chicken salad.

Only the white part is used in cooking but middle-section greenery can be added to raw dishes.

I like to grow my scallions in large containers and plant the seeds two inches apart.

The length of white stem can be increased by transplanting seedlings from a seed tray to a container (or the ground) and burying them three to four inches deep.

In November I was given several bulbils from an onion called Egyptian Walking. I planted the bulbils four inches deep and they have broken ground and are looking healthy. They are bunching onions and have the reputation of ‘walking’ in much the same way as Walking Irises. Their distinctive feature is the production of bulbils – small onions – on what would normally be called the seed stalk.

Small businesses shine at Little Pink Party

he Little Pink Party brand once again proved it has what it takes to wow Bahamian women in particular when it hosted its 2017 “Paradise Found” shopping experience at the Baha Mar Convention Centre last Saturday.

Even after a two-year hiatus, Little Pink Party veteran supporters and newcomers attended the event in droves, making it the perfect girls’ day out, with some even bringing their significant others along for the adventure.

The brainchild of Kandice Cargill, the event series was launched in 2008 out of a desire to host fashionforward parties for Bahamian women.

Kandice’s vision was to provide stylish, smart, trend-setting and on-the-go women with a unique opportunity to learn and experience products presented directly to them by a variety of retailers and brand representatives.

Last weekend’s guests received limited edition swag bags filled with goodies like make-up remover wipes, Creme of Nature products, Little Pink Party merchandise, lotions, face wash, and more.

The convention centre turned into a beehive of activity with fashion, beauty, health and wellness and technology vendors like Naughty and Nice, Armani Hair, Motions, Soft and Beautiful, Pretty Persuasions, Revlon, Madistic Photography, Bay Street Medical, LMW Studios, and others. There were also hourly fashion shows and live entertainment hosted by Bahamian singer Bodine Johnson.

For Ashonte Laing, owner and exhibitor at Bejeweled Accessories, it was a great pleasure to have the opportunity to share her off her accessories, handmade tutus, and more. She believes The Little Pink Party provides a great platform for small businesses in the country.

“This is my first time participating in the event, but I have always followed The Little Pink Party through

social media. I thought this would be a good venture to be a part of because I am trying to promote my business and get myself out there. I started about six months ago and business is coming along. I think these events are important to host so that people are made aware of small businesses like myself.

It is also an opportunity for me to meet other business ones like myself,” said Ashonte.

Also a first-time participator, Chevette Williamson’s display of jewellery attracted many guests to her table at the rear of the room. She told Tribune Weekend that her showcase was designed to show Bahamians how talented local artisans can be.

“We just want to show locals how we as artisans can make jewellery that looks like store-bought quality pieces.

I have always attended The Little Pink Party (as a guest) and I decided to try it out to get some more exposure, and it has been going well. The track record the event has, shows that it gets, the traffic, and so even if we don’t make any money, we can get the exposure to direct persons in our local spaces. It is very important for persons to become inspired from events like this,” said Chevette.

Euricka Burrows, a representative of the Bio Oil brand, was more than happy to share tips on how the product helps with scars, uneven skin tones and stretch marks. With the brand based in South Africa (Lowe’s Wholesale being a local distributor), Euricka said the event was an excellent way to promote Bio Oil locally.

“It has been on the market for many years now, so definitely The Little Pink Party has its benefits in promoting brands because it gets the word out there,” she said.

Meanwhile Little Pink Party founder Kandice described this year’s event as one she has always dreamed of, one that her team wanted to see come to fruition. Fortunate to have partners like ALIV, IL Cares, Bay Street Medical, L’Oreal, BAF Financial, RUSH Imports, Bahamaslocal.com, and Product Joint, she said the 2017 Little Pink Party was a great success.

“The ALIV Lounge is hosting a bar with their signature cocktails. We typically have Bay Street Medical doing health screenings. IL Cares is hosting a champagne bar, which is a new feature of the event; there are performances, we have giveaways and so much more,” said Kandice.

She believes Bahamians were even more eager to attend this year’s event due to the fact that The Little Pink Party had been on a two-year break.

“It feels amazing the event is still popular and I honestly understand why, because of what the event gives the attendee, the product of The Little Pink Party is unmatched.

Every year it gets better and it grows,” she said.

“When the event comes together it honestly takes on a life of its own. There is always something that I am proud of. It is an amazing feeling to create something that people love and look forward to. We outgrow venues and so we have to move it around. The Baha Mar Convention Centre is cost effective and attendees don’t have to complain about the heat. We want to expand the brand going forward; we have already scheduled to attend conferences that will put us in position.

The 19th century photographer-to-the-stars Sir Christopher Ondaatje remembers the great Victorian photographer who socialised with the era’s greatest intellectuals and was the great-aunt of pioneering author Virginia Woolf.

J

ulia Margaret Cameron (18151979) became fascinated with photography late in life. She took haunting photographs, first of the nine-year-old Annie Philpott, and then of the most eminent figures of the Victorian age, including Sir John Herschel, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Charles Darwin, Anne Thackeray Ritchie and Ellen Terry. Her accomplished artistry earned her a reputation not only as a sensitively accomplished artist but as one of the greatest photographers of all time.

The durability of Julia Margaret’s photographic artistry is a tribute to her

genius, and her unique photographs are as instantly recognisable today as they were over a hundred years ago. She created an amazing variety of fantastic scenarios, using both children and grown-ups, family and friends, as well as servants and celebrities. Blatantly oblivious to public opinion, she nevertheless strove for artistic recognition and her work can still be seen in institutions such as the J Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Julia Margaret was the fourth of 10 children born to James and Adéline Pattle in India. She eventually married Charles Hay Cameron (1795 – 1881) in 1835, a man 20 years her senior, in Calcutta. Cameron had had an extremely successful official career in India and had been commissioned in 1829 (with Sir William Colebrook) to write a report on the ‘judicial establishment and procedure of Ceylon’. He stayed on the island for 11 months and was immediately fascinated by the jungles and estates of the country to which he would return in old age.

They returned to India but in 1840 and 1844. Charles Hay invested heavily in coffee plantations in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Five years later, the Camerons returned to England, perhaps because of ill health, where they first settled in Tunbridge Wells and then in Putney Heath. However, six years later, in 1860, the Camerons bought two cottages on the Isle of Wight – very near the famed poet Alfred Lord Tennyson’s house, Farringford – which they put together into a rather grand single house which they named Dimbola Lodge after one of their coffee estates in Ceylon.

Trollope and G F Watts. The Camerons and Tennysons seemed to share many aspects of their lives, spanning many intellectual dinners and conversations with their hosts of gifted friends. But Charles Hay’s heart was already in Ceylon where his two sons were running the family estates, and despite the attractions of the ‘Victorian Bloomsbury’ that they had helped set up on the Isle of Wight, Charles Hay spent a great deal of his time away in Ceylon. This opened up the way for his younger wife to become obsessed with photography.

It filled the lonely days and hours when her husband was away.

It is rumoured that Julia Margaret’s daughter and son-in-law gave her the first camera in 1864 with the words, “It may amuse you to try to photograph during your solitude.” Photography then was only 25 years old. In a letter

to Sir John Herschel (1792-1871) she wrote: “At the beginning of this year I first took up photography i e my kind and loving son Charles Norman gave me a camera and I set to work alone and unassisted to see what I could do...I felt my way literally in the dark thro’ endless failure, at last came endless successes!”

She had but a single lesson from renowned photographer David Wilkie Wynfield (1837-1887) and her first exhibition at the Photographic Society of London was in the summer of 1864. With enormous support from her husband, who was often sick and confined to his bedroom, Julia Margaret embarked on a series of portraits unrivalled in the history of photography.

Sadly, things were not going well in Ceylon where a terrible blight had hit the plantations and three of her sons

found it hard to keep things going.

Many planters were going bankrupt.

Thus, in 1875, the Camerons decided that it was time to make a permanent return to the island. Charles Hay was now 81 years old and his health failing.

The contents of Dimbola Lodge were packed not only in cases but in two coffins, and the family set sail from Dover.

Reaching Ceylon through the Suez Canal (opened in 1869), they stayed first in Kalutara and later in Lindula.

Here, Julia Margaret photographed many of the Tamils who worked for the family. They are some of her finest studies and as Colin Ford says in his masterful biography of Julia Margaret Cameron, “The pictures exhibit exactly the same understanding of how to fill the frame with human figures, how to define their presence with careful control of light and shade, and how to give

them dignity ...”. Marianne North, the great botanical painter, went out to Ceylon in 1876 and 1877 to stay with the Camerons and found Charles Hay’s health much impaired. He wanted to die in Ceylon. She also said of Julia Margaret, “The walls of her rooms were covered with magnificent photographs; other were tumbling about the tables, chairs, and floors ... She also made some studies of natives while I was there, and took such a fancy to the back of one of them ... that she insisted on her son retaining him as her gardener, though she had no garden and he did not know even the meaning of the word.”

Despite this, and probably because one of their sons had come down with some coastal sickness, the Camerons moved up north to their Glencairn estate.

Sadly, Julia Margaret caught a chill after the sudden change in climate and died on January 26, 1879. She was only 63 years old. She was buried 16 miles away in St Mary’s Church, Bogawantalawa. Charles Hay Cameron survived her by two years and died on May 8, 1881. They are both buried in the same grave at St Mary’s.

Curiously, when I was doing research for my book “Woolf in Ceylon” in 2004 I visited the Glencairn Estate and St Mary’s Church in Bogawantalawa to see the Cameron grave. Julia Margaret was, after all, Virginia Woolf’s greataunt and the pioneering author had written about her in both the comedy “Freshwater” and the short story “The Searchlight”. Driving up the short track to the church I was met by a priest in a

flowing white cassock. Seeing me in the front of the car he exclaimed, “Ah! I wrote to you last month. Thank you for coming to see me.”

For the life of me I could not remember receiving any such letter. “Come and see the church” he said, getting into the back of the car. And this we did also seeing the humble structure he had been building adjacent to the side of the church. He needed funds to complete his construction. I then asked if I could see the Julia Margaret Cameron grave, which I wanted to photograph for my book. We walked over to the crest of the hill to the Cameron grave site and saw the two names chiselled on the grave stone. I noticed that Charles Hay’s death had been mistakenly carved into the stone as 1880 whereas in fact it should have been 1881. I mentioned this to the priest suggesting that perhaps it should be changed and corrected. He seemed quite shocked at my suggestion. Unfortunately, it was an overcast day and the grave by itself

did not make a particularly good photograph. I wanted something dramatic.

And so I lay on my stomach looking at the headstone through my camera lens searching for inspiration. Nothing! And then quite suddenly, as if Julia Margaret herself was instructing me, I realised that I had to make my own drama just as she so painstakingly did in her masterpieces.

“Don’t worry about the background.

It will disappear. Concentrate on the subject. Make it fill the frame. The light will look after itself. Never mind about the things – it is the people that will complete the image. Where are the people? Get the people, and create your photograph. You cannot do things in a hurry. Photography is a slow and tiresome process. Fill the boundaries of your frame with human figures. Define their presence. Give them dignity.”

So I lifted myself off the grave and looked for anything that could help me.

Seeing nothing I walked southwards to the crest of the hill looking down onto the main road and there below me, quite out of place, were three Tamil tea estate workers in working saris, with the long ‘level’ sticks, walking westwards a distance away. Instantly I told the priest that he must run down to the road, intercept the three workers, and bring them to the Cameron grave.

This he did, running down the precipitous bank, then shouting and finally convincing them to come up hill to the church graveyard. And that is how I got my picture. I think the great photographer would have been pleased.

The Royal Air Force in Nassau

n November 11 each year, we remember those who gave their lives in service to their many countries, so I made my annual pilgrimage to the Nassau War Cemetery on Maxwell Lane, off Farrington Road.

I was disappointed to see that the grass was in obvious need of cutting, but I photographed the poppy-draped Czechoslovak flag on the grave of each of the six Czechoslovak airmen buried there. I saw no other poppies.

During World War II, the Royal Air Force operated two air bases on New Providence. Oakes Field was one of those bases. Windsor Field was the other and two important RAF units were based here – No 111 Operational Training Unit (OTU) and No 113 (South Atlantic) Wing.

Between Summer 1942 and Autumn 1945, many RAF pilots were receiving initial training at flying schools in Canada and the United States, so Nassau, with its near-perfect flying weather and far from any enemy interference, was the perfect location for OTU 111. Here, over the three-year period, more than 600 badly-needed long-range B-24 Liberator crews (more than 5,000 airmen) were trained for service in RAF Coastal Command.

supplies from North America to the war zones in the Middle East and Far East.

American pilots delivered over 2,000 US-manufactured aircraft to the RAF at Windsor Field, to be ferried via Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Brazil, Ascension Island, and West Africa to wherever they were needed, distances often in excess of 13,000 miles.

Colyn Rees, a former Ferry Command pilot, who was a well-known pilot throughout the Bahamas, after the war, once showed me his wartime pilot’s log book, which contained typed orders to deliver a Douglas C-47 (commonly called a DC-3) from Nassau to India.

I questioned why no specific airport had been named, to which he replied that the RAF was happy to get it to

anywhere in India, so desperate was the situation in the war zones.

The RAF 250 Air-Sea Rescue Squadron was also stationed in the Bahamas – at Montagu Bay, Lyford Cay and Harbour Island. Their amphibious aircraft and fast launches were here to rescue crews whose aircraft went down in the sea and to co-operate with naval forces operating in this area.

There was also a RAF signalsdetachment at San Salvador, to give navigational aid to aircraft on longrange flights.

All of this required a fully-equipped hospital, which was built in the Prospect Ridge area. One of the doctors was Dr Myer Rassin, who stayed here and later founded Doctors Hospital.

On the ground, there was a permanent staff of over 3,000 officers and men.

Bahamians became familiar with planes flying overhead at all hours of the day and night, until the war ended and one day and the RAF contingent boarded the SS Bloemfontein and sailed away. Windsor Field was abandoned. Oakes Field became our civilian airport once more. A not-inconsiderable number of RAF personnel stayed behind with their Bahamian spouses.

his is the time of the year when you shop until you drop. Everywhere one looks there are “deals and steals” – Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday, and so it goes on. One thing is for sure though, you are spending your hardearned money to give thoughtful gifts to the people that you love. You want quality for your money and yet you still want to have enough money to pay the electric bill at the end of all the festivities.

Lots of different Christmas trunk sales are popping up all over New Providence, and many of them benefit a cause or a charity. This is a terrific way of doing two things in one. You are able to shop and give back to a needy organisation at the same time.

The Bahamas Humane Society has had and is still having fundraising trunk shows and Christmas fairs. We invite the vendors and we advertise and invite the potential buyers. After the sales are over, each vendor gives a percentage of their sales to the shelter.

This provides a simple, quick, pleasant and effective way of getting items from the Christmas shopping list checked off and simultaneously doing a good deed.

On Tuesday, December 12, there will be one such event at my house from 12noon to 6pm.

We will have a stunning selection of exotic clothing items from Arcadian Treasures and beautiful jewellery from A Devine Design. There will be a host of amazing products from the Bethel family, including, but not limited to, Jennifer Bethel’s fabulous petal pendants, made from local Bahamian flowers, her husband Jonathan’s art, and much more.

Tina Klonaris-Robinson, of the Meah Foundation, will have her unique pointillism art. She makes stunning Christmas tree decorations, rock art, prints, boxes, greeting cards and has

The BHS will have their usual array of animal treats and Christmas gifts and we will be featuring the new book by international photographer Patricia Vazquez called “Fabulous Faces”.

It is an amazing book with really special animal portraits, and the perfect stocking stuffer or present for a small kid (Big kids like me might like one because the photos are so special).

“Fabulous Faces” is a very special book, as all the proceeds from the sale of the books go the Bahamas Humane Society. We will also be featuring a broad selection of Patricia Vazquez’s greeting cards If all else fails, you can always give a donation to the BHS in somebody’s name and we will provide you with a pretty certificate confirming the donation.

This is a wonderful opportunity for you to come out and enjoy the high-class talent that we have in the Bahamas. All these artists are highly respected in the art world and yet they have chosen to give back but donating a generous portion of their sales to help feed the animals over the Christmas season.

This is the true meaning of giving.

When people get together and do something for a common cause, it really does make you feel “warm and fuzzy” all over.

I would like you to remember that on Saturday, December 16, there is a special showing of a movie about the very famous and world-acclaimed photographer Slim Aarons being hosted by the Bahamas International Film Festival to benefit the BHS. This movie is part of the festival and its debut showing is taking place at the Captain’s Table at the Lyford Cay Club Marina. People wanting tickets to this event should call the restaurant and reserve a space.
