Nominees announced for Elevation Awards 2019 TonAsh and Wendi Lewis lead with most nods

R

apper TonAsh and singer Wendi Lewis lead next year’s Elevation Awards nominations, snagging four nods each.

They are followed by Patrice Murrell and rappers Foots and Twindem, with three nominations each. Also, gospel artist Kenyatta Taylor and gospel rappers Eman and Johnny B lead with three nominations in the gospel categories.

The nominees for 2019 were announced during a live stream on Live Up TV via Facebook. The launch event was hosted by Ewurabena “Rabs” Appiah, Jerchovia Moxey and DJ Epic Forealz.

The Elevation team has added seven new categories to next year’s award show: “Radio Talk Show of the Year”, “Gospel Artist of the Year”, “Gospel Music Video of the Year”, “Hip-Hop Artist of the Year”, “Hip-Hop Song of the Year”, “TV Series of the Year”, and the “Bahamian International Award”. This brings the total to 27 categories.

“We are excited about this year’s awards, adding over 25 categories this year. My team and I would like to congratulate all of this year’s nominees and we will continue in our efforts to provide an opportunity and platform for rising and established entertainers”, said Elevation Awards CEO Vincent McDonald Jr. The Lifetime Achievement Award recipient is Ira Storr, and hosting next year’s award will be comedian and radio personality Naughty.

Bahamian entertainment, the Elevation team has partnered with CSB Tech Emporium to launch a new mobile app that lets fans of local artists record videos while lip-syncing to Bahamian songs and using unique filters. Fans are able to share these videos on all major social media platforms. The first playlist of songs will

be added to the app from nominees for next year’s awards as well as past Elevation Award winners. The app is available for download as of today.

The 2019 Elevation Awards will be held Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the Meliá Nassau Beach. The awards show was established by the Elevation Media Group to celebrate the accomplishments of Bahamians in music, acting, sports, community building and other fields of entertainment. interview At only 19, this Team Bahamas swimmer is putting his country on the map, both with his athletic abilities and his entrepreneurial aspirations. He tells Cara Hunt how he became the youngest national representative of Silicon Valley’s largest independent startup community and how he is bringing the programme to these shores.

ahamian national team swimmer Gershwin Greene is making waves both in and out of pool.

The 19-year-old swimmer currently attends Virginia Tech University where he juggles his time working towards a degree in accounting and competing in events such as the 100m breast stroke, the 100m butterfly, and the 50m and 100m freestyle races. Additionally, he also has to meet with his clients’ demands for the digital marketing company he helped to start.

And now Gershwin is about to make history as the youngest chapter director of a major global community initiative for entrepreneurship when he brings the Start Up Grind programme to the Bahamas.

Startup Grind is one of the largest independent startup communities, designed to actively educate, inspire and connect more than 1,500,000 entrepreneurs in over 500 chapters.

Founded in Silicon Valley, California, in 2009, the programme nurtures startup ecosystems in 125 countries through events, media, and partnerships with organisations like Google.

The cornerstone of their global community are monthly events featuring successful local founders, innovators, educators and investors who share lessons learned on the road to building their own companies.

“I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur and promote entrepreneurship,” Gershwin told Tribune Weekend.

He explained that he first learned about Startup Grind during their annual conference, which is held in Palo Alto. “They had a segment on bringing a chapter to where you live and I wanted to bring it to Nassau.”

“...we have been pushed from a young age to understand and embrace the importance of hard work, teamwork, leadership and performance.

Those qualities have been instilled into our brains, and, as evident, translated to areas outside of the sport.”

However, it took a few years to get the necessary approvals and the go ahead to bring the Startup Grind to the Bahamas.

Gershwin said he is very excited about the new initiative.

“It is meant to bring people together to share business ideas – really anyone with a business – but particularly tech business. I am the youngest chapter director in the programme and so I am excited.

Gershwin and his team are currently preparing to launch the Bahamas chapter with a series of events which will begin in January of next year.

“Our first event will be a meet and greet in January, so I really am wanting to start to get the word out from now so persons can plan to attend,” he explained.

“We are still working on all the logistics of where and when, but that will be the first and then we are also planning several additional events for 2019, which will probably be two events in the summer months and another event in December.”

He noted that that the target audience are people between the ages of 18 and 25.

Putting the Bahamas on the map is nothing new for the swimmer.

Gershwin has competed at some of the highest levels internationally while representing his country. He finished 15th overall in the 50m free swim at the 2016 Junior Pan Pacific Championships.

And while he loves his time in the pool, he also has quite the passion for business.

And his own personal dreams of owning a company became a reality this summer when he partnered with fellow swimmers N’nhyn Fernander, Armando Moss and Jared Fitzgerald to start the Brandsy Bahamas business.

He and his fellow co-founders explained why they wanted to start their own company: “By representing the Bahamas on an international level in swimming, the four of us developed a sincere and genuine friendship, and a great appreciation of our country. Being members of the national team and numerous NCAA Division 1 swim programmes, we have been pushed from a young age to understand and embrace the importance of hard work, teamwork, leadership and performance. Those qualities have been instilled into our

brains, and, as evident, translated to areas outside of the sport.”

They decided that they would use their combined tech, finance and social knowledge to create a platform that allows companies to conduct business more efficiently and effectively.

The name Brandsy is a play on the Bahamian slang words “tingly” and “trapsy”.

The company focuses on marketing consultation, social media management, social media campaign creation, logo branding creation and paid media services.

The hardest part of creating and building the company, said Gershwin, has been juggling his time between his work for the company, going to classes, studying, swim practice and competing in swim meets.

“If you are an entrepreneur, it helps if you have a really good team around you,” he said.

“It also helps that I really like what I am doing and I am passionate about what I do. I also consider it a way to help out and a way to give back. I see myself as a ‘techy’ person and helping people get the buzz they need to complete their goals.”

Building your perfect holiday party bar

he holiday season is in full swing and Bahamians are busy shopping and planning parties.

For those will be hosting a special in their homes, there are a few things to keep in mind.

As you plan your décor, entertainment and menu, don’t forget one of the most important elements of any successful gathering: the drinks. And ensure you have all the bases covered in this regard, it is best to build your own bar with all the necessities that your guests will love.

To help with this endeavour, Tribune Weekend paid a visit to Commonwealth Brewery and the 700 Wines & Spirits store to get the low-down on how to fill your bar with the right kind of “bubbly”.

Setting a budget

Start with allocating a portion of your party’s overall budget to the soft drinks and alcoholic beverages. Arame Strachan of Commonwealth Brewery said if you are hosting a gathering for about 30 people, set aside at least $200 should go towards the bar.

“But for something more engaging with a little more people you can do well with $400. You have to also consider you will need money for things like chasers, juices, lime, club soda, tonic water, cocoa in order to create your cocktails. So you will need an additional $30 to $50 just for that. But for the alcohol alone $200 to $400 is good,” she said.

Also plan for the party cups/glasses, straws and napkins.

Get the basics

There are some main spirits that are non-negotiable and should be included in every bar. These can be enjoyed by themselves or used in a cocktail.

Arame Strachan of Commonwealth Brewery knows exactly which drinks you need for your holiday party bar.

“You have to have a rum, a vodka, a scotch and a gin. If $200 is all the money you have, those are going to be the ones you must have. And if possible, also get some sort of creamy liquor for those people who want something sweet and milky,” advised Arame.

“Those spirits will go for about $20 to $30 per bottle, and one bottle of each should do you well, as you will get about 20 pours per spirit bottled if you are making a cocktail. If you are pouring something like a Baileys, where you are having it by itself on ice, then you are going to get about eight pours.

So you will need two bottles.”

Provide something for everyone

“You are going to have the cousins who have to have beer,” said Arame.

“Then there will be some people who don’t want a spirit or a wine and so you have to have some beer available.”

The average case of beer costs between $40 to $50 and yields 24 bottles, she said. Economy wines can cost under $10, which can be used at the table.

“And then there are some really nice ones out there that can go up into the hundreds. But of course if you are talking about a budget you can get some under $20 dollar,” she said.

“Now, you will have some of the older aunties at the Christmas event who want something more discerning and are not necessarily into the economy brands that everyone is having. You would need about one to two bottles of wine because you are only going to get five glasses out of a bottle of wine for the people who have to have wine.”

Use fresh ingredients

There are many great alcoholic options on the market, but Arame says bringing the best out of them sometimes requires using fresh juices as mixers.

“It’s sad when we buy such great spirit products and we put substandard mixers in them in order to create a cocktail. But if you want something refreshing and want to impress your guests you can muddle a little cucumber or some jalapeno pepper and

create a nice cocktail. It would add an element to your holiday party that people will not forget,” she said.

“I strongly suggest that we get away from the canned juices and start to create cocktails from fresh fruit.

Instead of using sweet and sour, get yourself little limes, sugar and syrup and make your own. Everyone has a bullet, because we all are into the healthy lifestyle, so get your strawberries, purée them, get your syrup and make your cocktail.”

Secure the leftovers

One of the great things about alcohol is that it rarely goes bad, so what ever is left over from your event can be saved for you to enjoy at leisure.

“There are some that have to be refrigerated after they have been opened, but the bottle will indicate that. The Mr Boston Egg Nog, which is a seasonal top seller, must be refrigerated after being opened,” said Arame.

Champagne and white wines should be served chilled. As for beers, they should be “as cold as you can get them.”

“It is industry standard that red wines should be served at room temperature, but because we live in the tropics the issue with our room temperature is that it is a lot hotter than Europe or North America. You can put the red wine in the refrigerator for about 20 to 30 minutes, take it out and let it air for a bit. It will have a nice cool taste,” she said.

‘Election 2017’ comes to Nassau

I

t took a year-and-a-half, but it was worth the wait: “Election 2017: The Final Shuffle” successfully played to a packed house in Freeport last weekend and will now be coming to Nassau this Saturday to delight audiences here.

This is the fourth instalment of the popular ‘Election’ comedy series, and once again Will Stubbs was a standout with his impersonation of former Prime Minister and PLP leader Perry G Christie, as well as Pineridge candidate Rev Frederick McAlpine. Patrice Johnson brought the house down as Christie’s sidekick, Haitian voter Ms Mary and as a lazy civil servant.

As in past years, David Wallace, Tameka Forbes and Tawari Rodgers were also brilliantly funny. And new cast members Matthew Wildgoose, Derek Stubbs and Melvin Miller had no problem keeping up with the veterans and delivered their own hilarious performances.

The past three election shows, previously written by Michael Pintard, have been big hits, attracting huge crowds in both Freeport and Nassau. This fourth show, with skits written by well-known “Crazy in Love” playwright Gea Pierre, proved just as entertaining and did not miss a beat.

The show, staged at the Bishop Michael Eldon High School auditorium, opens with a Carnival scene and ends with a scene of Darold Miller and Rodney Moncur giving radio commentary on the sweeping election results and the infamous rally speeches by Perry Christie and Dr Hubert Minnis.

David Wallace said the ‘Election’ shows have now become a theatre staple. Audiences have been looking forward to a new edition ever since 2002. There has been “Election 2002: If You Don’t Laugh You’ll Cry”, “Election 2007: Count It Again Man, I Say

Count It Again”, and “Election 2012: “What Just Happened?”

He told Tribune Weekend that the shows came about to bring healing to a sometimes riled up populace after the general elections.

“I believe the election is too divisive in this country, where the husband might not be speaking to wife, and where a brother might not be speaking

to sister, because everyone has their own different political views. I wanted to do the show to begin the healing process because it allows us to sit on the side of someone who you would have (been a rival to) six months ago and laugh about some things that happened,” he said.

Mr Wallace said the first “Election” show was written after the FNM lost.

And five years later, with a change of government, they decided to do another one.

“We got that name from former Minister Allyson Maynard Gibson in Pinewood – “Count It Again, I Say Count It Again” – who had that presiding officer count her ballots over and over,” he recalled.

“And in 2012, with the change of government, former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham on the night of election asked, ‘What the he—just happen,’ and we coined the phrase, ‘What Just Happened?’,” Mr Wallace said the shows normally came out about six months after the general election.

“The problem with this year it that it was a year-and-a-half late because Michael (Pintard) won (his seat) and that never happened before, and with him winning he could not write the script,” he explained.

“He wanted us to hold off until he got a script, but after a year I said we could not wait on him any longer. So we went out and sought Gea Pierre, who had written some wonderful plays over the years.”

Mr Wallace said the show features some controversial topics during the last administration, including Junkanoo Carnival, on which the government spent millions of dollars while people’s roofs weren’t fixed yet.

He noted that show also features a scene of Loretta Butler-Turner, played by Patrice Johnson, when she goes to overthrow Minnis.

Of the major scenes of the show, Mr Wallace said, is when former Prime Minister Christie meets with his team of advisors about whether he should run in the election.

Various members of the clergy are also featured, including Bishop Drexel Gomez, Bishop Simeon Hall, Lawrence Rolle, and others.

Show fillers include stand-up comedy performances by Mr Wallace, Melvin Miller playing attorney Fred Smith and the voice of Fred Mitchell. The real Fred Smith, as well as Deputy Prime Minister Peter Turnquest and his wife Sonia were among the audience members enjoying the show.

The play debuted last Friday in Grand Bahama and comes to the St John’s Auditorium in New Providence this weekend with three performances: 8pm on Saturday, 3pm on Sunday, and 8pm on

“It is our goal to take it to very Family Island, including Abaco, Eleuthera, Inagua, Exuma, Long Island, Cat Island and Andros. And our goal is to be part of Pre-Independence celebrations in Florida and Atlanta,” said Mr Wallace The production company, he said, is also contemplating creating a play for the mid-term period.

Due to lack of sponsorship this time around, Mr Wallace said funds raised from the first run will be used to offset the cost of the show.

“We were not able to get one dollar for sponsorship, but we intend to hold a raffle during one of our shows and give the proceeds to the Cancer Society, and also do something to assist the Hugh Campbell Primary School,” he said.

It’s Christmas on

Sapodilla Street

I

t’s been a busy year for the team at After Dark Promotions. With three exciting and successful plays staged this year – “My Mother’s Inheritance”, “The School on Sapodilla Street”, and last weekend’s “Christmas on Sapodilla Street 4” at the Dundas – the production company is looking forward to an equally thrilling line-up for 2019.

Tamara Moncur, founder of After Dark Productions, said the fifth and latest “Sapodilla Street” play set in the fictional community of the same name once again went down a storm with audiences.

The show featured a Junkanoo rush-out for the first time ever on Sapodilla Street, as well as live singing by entertainers like Kenyatta Taylor, Brittany Lundy, Holman McDonald, Aris Moxey-Flowers, Brittany Hanna and Khya Farrington, and others.

“The emotions expressed by the actors and singers made persons pause for a moment to also reevaluate their focus on the reason for season. I was inspired to write this play that displays the distractions of so many people during the holiday season. Many become so caught up in what I want rather than what I can do or give. After all, Jesus did not think about Himself, He thought about us,” said Tamara.

The play’s plot starts as the community of Sapodilla Street receives the disappointing

news that their annual Christmas party is cancelled due to the lack of funds. This news, delivered eagerly by the infamous Senator Lauren Whitehead, does not sit well with the matriarchs Beulah and Pearl. With no funds, no skills, but with a lot of faith, they decide they were going to save Christmas.

Meanwhile, the self-proclaimed mayor, and a drunk, Hezi gets an unexpected early

Christmas present – seven little children. Prophetess Josie, who is Hezi’s neighbour and archenemy, rescues the children from this Scrooge. The characters Joe and John end up in a love triangle with Eve, Vickie’s cousin who is visiting, and it all climaxes when two out-of-town guests visit Sapodilla Street and remind the Sapodillians of the real meaning of Christmas. The two visitors give a

generous donation to assist with the Christmas party.

The cast this time around included Franco Moncur as Hezi, Tamara Moncur as Josie, Tiffany Aranha as Senator Lauren Whitehead, Fabia Johnson as Beulah, Dellarease Rolle as Pearl, Lashan Porter as Eve, Alexia Tolas as Sarah, Kencil McPhee as Willie, Kevin McPhee as Joe, Archie Minnis as Larry, Jenson Rolle as Sidney, Carla Sands as Dra’Quilla, Kenyatta Taylor as John, Holman McDonald as Eli, Tiara Josey as Vickie, Eddie Minnis as Officer Bodie, Brittany as Tequila, Melissa Roberts as Betty, and Annesha Brown as Myrtle.

“Preparing for this production involves commitment, time management and

teamwork. Rehearsals can best be described as hilarious.

The actors are actually funny off and on the stage and we have had many laugh until you cry moments. This is a great stress reliever after work,” said Tamara.

“For me it is important to write, produce and direct a show like this because it allows me to utilise my talent, as well as seek and expose the talent of others and present a family-friendly comedy show to the public at large, using everyday situations, events and practices and create possible funny outcomes based on a general Bahamian mind set. It is a great way to embrace our very unique culture; the good, the bad and the ugly.”

Actress turns author for fantasy romp

Young adult novel offers positive message for teens

A

rip-roaring adventure and a timely message is what Shantinique Rolle hopes to have delivered with her first fantasy novel “Keniah”, which tells the story of warrior princess who leads an army of men into war.

Shantinique Rolle is a Bahamian actress who fell in love with the fantasy genre as a child.

After reading so many novels, she wanted to try her hand at writing her own. “Keniah” is the result.

“My inspiration for this book came when I was a little girl. I loved reading mythical fiction books. When I became an adult I decided that I’m going to write my own book; it wasn’t easy putting in the hard work. Dedication was the first step. Months went by but I never got discouraged because I knew in my heart that one day my book is going to be completed and be available in stores,” Shantinique told Tribune Weekend.

“Keniah” is for readers 15 years and older. It is now available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and from the Ingram catalogue.

In writing the book, Shantinique said she had to take her imagination into a completely different sphere which allowed her to come up with the plot, characters and themes, which she believes readers will take pleasure getting lost in.

Her father challenges her in a fight, which she wins and is awarded a gift. She then leads an army of men to war against the evil Queen Afina.”

While the book is fiction, the author said its message is a realistic one. “The overall message in the book is that doesn’t matter who you are; you can accomplish

and be whoever you choose to be,” she said.

“Stay determined, and most important, be focused. Blocking out negative comments is the best thing to do. If you always listen to negative opinions you will never mature mentally. If you choose to put yourself in a position which is living by and meditating on other people’s criticism, you will never progress to the next level.

My advice to individuals is to be happy, think positive, and always have a pleasant attitude.”

“I want the readers to know that the world is changing and nothing is wrong with accepting individuals when they are different; everybody is special.”

Kalik joins the ‘Conchservation’

movement

I

F the rigorous preservation of conch does not continue, its depletion means in the years to come those who haven’t already, won’t ever get to enjoy the Bahamas’ famous Kalik and conch combo, which has been previously listed on Business Insider’s Top 40 “Dishes to try before you die”.

And to protect the economic, ecological, social and cultural significance of conch, Kalik has forged a three-year partnership with the Bahamas National Trust (BNT) for its Conchservation campaign. The brand has committed $30,000 to the effort.

Conchservation was launched by the BNT several years ago as a national campaign aimed at protecting queen conch in the Bahamas through research, citizen science, and policy changes.

The Conchservation project team approached the Minister responsible for the Department of Marine Resources, the government agency managing marine life in the country, when ecological data showed there was a decline in conch stocks. The Minister specifically requested documented engagement with the Bahamian public and the fishermen, and a comprehensive stock assessment throughout The Bahamas.

Conchservation is designed to capture this information while preserving the queen conch.

Queswell Ferguson, senior brand manager for beers at Commonwealth Brewery, said it is their goal for the campaign to reach ground level through education and empowerment of conch vendors at Potter’s Cay and Arawak Cay, and for them to become ambassadors of the movement.

“We must work hand-in-hand with the Bahamas National Trust to find the right balance between conserving this important resource and also ensuring that conch in all of its various forms is available for Bahamians from generation to generation,” he said.

Apart from being a major player in the marine food chain, conch has social and cultural significance, with conch dishes being a major part local celebrations as well as being readily available for consumption at Potter’s Cay Dock and Arawak Cay.

“Kalik and conch are staple parts of the Bahamian way of life. Over the last few years there’s been a clear depletion of conch throughout our archipelago.

It was important that Kalik, the beer of the Bahamas, follow the lead of the Bahamas National Trust as a dialogue

leader on our need to conserve this Bahamian treasure,” said Mr Ferguson.

Taking this effort further, the brand has been teaming up with local producer/director Lavado Stubbs for the past four years to create ads featuring conch vendors and local icons such as Dino, Goldie and Haymish. The visuals also feature musician D-Mac and Eric Carey of the BNT. The video show’s favourite places, restaurants and personalities as it relates to conch. It showcases the wide range of ways conch can be prepared, educates on the impact that consumption and harvesting practices are having on long-term supply, and reminds viewers of conch’s importance to who we are economically, socially and culturally.

“Kalik has built a strong relationship with the local creative community and no one other than a Bahamian would be better able to truly capture the magic of the relationship between conch and Kalik,” said Mr Ferguson.

“It is also our aim to always keep everything that we do 100 percent authentically Bahamian – being able to feature Bamboo Shack, Goldie, Dino, Haymish Moxey (Gone Finish) enables viewers to put themselves in every scene as I am sure there were many mouths watering seeing the wide range of conch dishes along with the beer of the Bahamas. The brand’s relationship with Lavado Stubbs has existed for our four years. It is an obligation of Kalik, Commonwealth Brewery, to highlight our local talent and work together to produce truly Bahamian magic.”

Winter Soulstice to bring Ty Dolla Sign, Rick Ross and Nas to Nassau Bahamian rappers can win chance to perform

T

he Bahamas is one week away from hosting its first ever Winter Soulstice Music Festival, with top artists Nas, Damian Marley, Ty Dolla Sign, Rick Ross, former Fifth Harmony member Lauren Jauregui, and many more, taking the stage on December 14 and 15.

The two-day festival will feature musical performances from nearly 20 artists across musical genres against an island backdrop. This year’s festival tickets go on sale this week electronically as well as across several platforms in Nassau.

hosts. Other musicians scheduled to perform during the two-day concert series include Ball Greez and Westafa, among others.

Tomorrow, the Bahamas’ Support An Artist Friday (SAAF) organisation will host a pre-event rap battle, which will highlight 12 to 16 established and up-and-coming local hip hop artists.

The two finalists will go on to perform on the Winter Soulstice Music Festival stage on opening night of December 14.

“We all need support, so why not start by giving some,” said Ordain Moss, founder and creator of SAAF movement and TV show. “I look forward to seeing our talented rappers in their elements showing the world what we have to offer in the 242 and I already know the audience will love the show.”

Tickets start at $35 for a general admission day pass and increase to $75 for a two-day general admission pass. The VIP passes start at $100,

with a two-day VIP pass increasing to $180. Nas and Damian Marley are the headliners for the first night, while Rick Ross and Ty Dolla Sign will be performing on the second night.

To me, that’s the bigger picture. That’s what I am aiming for because I’m a person that don’t believe in boxes. I hate boxes. I love the sound they make when I break out of them, but that’s about it.”

clothing designer living in Eleuthera is calling for Bahamian jewellery, handbag, hat and footwear artists to collaborate with her to provide a “complete Bahamian fashion experience” for locals and tourists alike.

Verda Gardiner, better known as Empress Verda, has been sewing for nearly 30 years. She loves using Bahamian colours and African fabrics, but in recent years she began looking for an authentically Bahamian fabric that is similar in appearance to the African fabrics she loves so much. She expressed this desire to a friend of hers at the One Eleuthera Foundation, of which she is a part, and they gave her the contacts for Danielle Morley, a local fabric designer living in Exuma.

Although Empress Verda and Danielle never met in person, they struck up a digital relationship that blossomed into Verda’s latest line of clothing. They have been networking for nearly a year now.

Danielle produced her first fabric design and then a second, the latter being the one that Empress said “really got her design juices flowing.”

“The fabric, which Danielle called Bahamiana Seagrape, was closest to what I was looking for in terms of a totally Bahamian fabric with similarity to African print,” Empress Verda told Tribune Weekend.

Earlier this month, she launched her new line of designs using the Bahamiana fabric at the Ministry of Tourism’s Arts, Craft and Farmer’s show in Eleuthera; the line was also featured on Tourism Today.

She was able to score a few accessories from local craftsmen for her models to wear with her designs, but she wants to take it to another level.

“The tourists really like it; it’s what they are looking for,” she said.

“But I want to take it further.

I want to showcase my designs in the hotels and I want to team up with Bahamian footwear designers, jewellery designers who will create pieces for my styles, and handbags made to complement the outfit and bring it all together.

It’s important for local designers to collaborate.”

Empress Verda started making clothes when she was a teenager and made it into her profession in her early 20s. She attended BTVI and then took up private sewing classes.

“The very first outfit I made was a red and white polka dot dress with a drop waist, which was very popular back in those days,” she shared. “I made it for an elderly lady in my neighbourhood. When I saw her walking down the street wearing it, I was very proud. It wasn’t perfect, but

I was proud and I never stopped sewing.”

Today, the Cupid’s Cay resident enjoys passing on her knowledge to the younger generation.

She teaches after-school sewing classes at Central Eleuthera High School.

When asked if she felt that the sewing profession could survive with so many people buying online or in clothing stores, Empress Verda said: “There will always be those women who want to wear something no one else is wearing, and they want a prefect fit.” She added that those buying in stores or online still come to seamstresses and tailors for alterations.

The models sporting her designs are known as the “Empress Empire” models and they have committed to being her permanent models as she aims to participate in more shows throughout the country. To contact Empress Verda, call (242) 524-0005.

Second, I just don’t like it; it’s really ugly and more than a bit tacky. I am, however, noticing a trend with the lace-up shoes, which are about the only thing I like about Michaela’s look.”

Film puts a modern spin on ‘Mary, Queen of Scots’ FILM TITLE RUNNING TIME: 112 MINS

ary,

Queen of Scots “ is an ambitious re-imagining of the Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I saga with modern flourishes and bold performances from Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie. But the film, for all its prestige and edginess, its lofty goals and contemporary messages, is not a particularly engrossing experience.

It’s a shame too, because most of the elements are there. The gorgeous costumes and meticulous settings are breathtaking, and they couldn’t have chosen two leads better suited to playing these women, with Ronan as Mary and Robbie as Elizabeth. They just don’t come together very well, straddling an awkward line between wanting to be both a modern referendum on the real struggles of being a female leader in the 16th century and a “Game of Thrones”-style actioner. Director Josie Rourke, who has a background in theatre, certainly has a knack for grandeur and drama.

But choppy editing and stilted story evolution never really do justice to what should be an epic and suspenseful tale of political machinations and power struggles.

Saoirse Ronan as Mary Stuart The story itself is fascinating. Mary, a Catholic widowed at 18 from the King of France, returns to Scotland to rule. She has eyes on England too, which is under the rule of her cousin, Elizabeth I, a Protestant who refuses to marry and produce an heir.

A husband, Elizabeth accurately concludes, will just try to take the throne from her. And the men in both of their camps try their best to make a peaceful relationship between the two countries impossible.

But the question of a successor remains and becomes urgent when Mary comes back on the scene and starts making her own claims to the throne. The two rulers correspond and negotiate in an elaborate game of

chess in which everyone is attempting to manipulate an unstable situation.

Elizabeth tries to offer up a husband to Mary, in her own lover Robert Dudley (Joe Alwyn), as a strategic plant. But, Mary, seeing through the plan, weds another Englishman, the charismatic Lord Darnley (Jack Lowden), ensuring that her offspring would have a legitimate claim to the throne.

There are interesting ideas to explore about being a powerful woman in this time. But the script from “House of Cards” creator Beau Willimon seems to oversimplify things. He imagines a relationship that devolves mostly because of Elizabeth’s jealousy of Mary’s youth, beauty and ability to bear children. This point is hammered

over and over, as Elizabeth, hearing that Mary is pregnant, gathers her skirt to just see what she would look like pregnant in silhouette. The birth scene is even more noxious, cutting back and forth from Mary in labour, to poor, sad Elizabeth creating the only thing she can — paper flowers.

The film takes enormous liberties with history, bringing the two rulers together for a face-to-face conversation, and infusing the cast with more diverse faces and themes to varying degrees of success.

That conversation that apparently never happened is well worth the factual leniency. It’s the scene that the whole film is building toward and both Robbie and Ronan are extremely compelling — vulnerable and introspective yet also fierce and unwavering — in this power showdown.

Unfortunately the journey to get to this part is long and, for long stretches, quite dreary and dull. “Mary, Queen of Scots” also has the misfortune of coming out around the same time as the deliciously compelling and lively Queen Anne film “The Favourite” and might get lost in the shuffle. This is a more staid and straightforward experience, and, for some costume drama enthusiasts, possibly even the preferable one. But for this critic, “Mary, Queen of Scots” was royally underwhelming.

Atlanta’s Brian Tyree Henry:

‘I feel everything’ NEW YORK (AP) — When Brian Tyree Henry filmed his scenes in “If Beale Street Could Talk,” he wept.

When he saw the finished film, he wept again.

In Barry Jenkin’s lyrical adaptation of James Baldwin’s celebrated novel, Henry plays Daniel Carty, the justout-of-jail friend of Fonny (Stephan James). When Fonny and Tish (KiKi Layne) run into Daniel on the street, they retreat to Fonny and Tisch’s apartment to catch up. The intimate conversation aches with the pain of incarceration: Daniel’s past, Fonny’s future. It’s a devastating but beautiful crescendo: two vulnerable black men, contemplating a world pitted against them.

“I was sobbing. I was like: Why am I crying at myself? Is that weird that I’m crying at myself?” says Henry. “It really, really, really sat with me. That could be me talking to my friend, me talking to my nephews, me talking to my brothers.”

It’s no surprise that one of the most moving and profound scenes of the year happens to be one with Henry in it. On stage and screen, in big parts and small, the 36-year-old actor’s soulful sensitivity and vast range has been on display with remarkable regularity.

There is, of course, his aspiring, oft-irritated rapper Alfred Miles, aka Paper Boi, on “Atlanta”: the stony, eye-rolling face to the series’ surrounding absurdity. Its second season earned Henry his second Emmy nomination in two years. (His first was for a guest appearance on “This Is Us.”) The Broadway revival of Kenneth Lonergan’s “Lobby Hero,” in which he played a conflicted security guard, won Henry his first Tony nod. And a few weeks before “Beale Street” hits theatres, Henry made an equally potent, if far more menacing impression as a politician in Steve McQueen’s “Widows.”

“I just don’t want to lie on them,” Henry says during a recent interview.

“These characters need a voice and I don’t want to be a person to lie on them. It’s sounding all deep but it’s true. I have a special connection to

Henry has a deep reservoir of emotion that never feels very far from the surface, and he speaks volubly, sometimes nearing tears, about the fictional lives that people his brain.

Henry simply feels a lot — maybe too much so.

“I feel everything,” he grants with a knowing grin. “These past two years have been a topsy-turvy thing for me.

I never in a million years could have imagined something so fantastic happening in my career. But I need to let ‘em go, these guys.”

Henry grew up the baby in a Fayetteville, North Carolina, family; his sisters were already adults. His parents

After attending Morehouse College in Atlanta, he got his master’s from the Yale School of Drama. Acting, he says, saved his life because it allowed him to express what he observed.

“Most of my life, at a very young age, I got to see what it was like to be surrounded by the lack of care — to see that people are human, that no one is impervious to pain, that pain hurts, that it takes time for things to

heal,” says Henry. “I spent most of my life constantly trying to hold on to the things that mattered.”

His Broadway debut came in the original cast in “The Book of Mormon,” but it’s been “Atlanta” that catapulted Henry’s career. Along with lending his voice to the upcoming “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” he’s already shot four films due out next year (including an action comedy alongside Melissa McCarthy). At the moment, he’s shooting the Brooklynset indie “The Outside Story.”

Henry’s ascendance has partly paralleled Alfred’s more humbling, fitful rise on “Atlanta” — a comparison not lost on Henry.

“Atlanta,” particularly in episodes like “Barbershop” and “Woods” (which was a tribute for Henry to his deceased mother), has given the broadest platform for his talent. But films like “If Beale Street Could Talk” have showed how much Henry can do with just a handful of scenes. His presence instantly adds depth and gravity.

“He came onto set, maybe he was there for a day in a half,” marvels costar Stephan James. “He was already a huge Baldwin fan, but what he was able to bring to that moment ... You talk about black love; that’s another form of it. Black love between brothers. That brotherly bond where we’re sharing our deepest, most intimate fears, the things that have broken us, how do we maintain our strength through these moments.”

Jenkins has said those scenes solidified the whole project. For Henry, they capture the duality of life as a black man.

“There’s always a constant audition process, I call it, of having to prove to people that you belong where you are,” says Henry, burly and broadshouldered, remembering when Yale students would assume he wasn’t a classmate. “I’ve been very fortunate to come to this point in my life where I’m done doing that.”

As the winter solstice approaches, Jack Hardy enjoys his first tomatoes, looks at alternative Christmas ornamentals, and suggests new plants to grow

The favourite day of December for most people in the Bahamas is the 25th, Christmas Day. But for plants the most significant day is the December 21, the winter solstice. Over in England there will be rites on that day in the Rock Garden, generally known as Stonehenge, performed by erstwhile Druids. We are short on Druids in the islands, so tend to skip celebration of the shortest day of the year.

Just about all plants are affected by the amount of light they receive and respond to days shortening or lengthening. The tomato plants sown in August were raised, you might say, going uphill and against the wind.

Tomato plants much prefer lengthening days and those planted soon will be generally healthier, more vigorous, and more productive than the earlier ones.

During the Christmas season the most popular plant by far is the poinsettia. Poinsettias flower and bear colourful bracts shortly after the winter solstice, usually in January. Those poinsettias on display for sale right now were raised in conditions where daylight was progressively even shorter than in nature. Instead of January, the

ongratulations if you have picked your first ripe tomato of the season. To be able to do this you would have planted your seeds in mid-August and nursed the plants through adverse conditions. I started with six plants but only four made it to maturity. I picked my first ripe fruit on November 17 and can look forward (with a little re-sowing) to seven months of turning my nose up at store offerings. I have had several e-mails from gardening friends who struck red at about the same time. The season has really started.

commercial poinsettias were blooming by the end of November and will be at their finest through December and quite a while thereafter. A mature poinsettia shrub in the open garden will bloom until after Easter.

When you buy your Christmas poinsettias you will look for the most handsome plants, of course. Display them in an area where there are no draughts or abrupt changes in temperature. Buyers often purchase a hat to hold their poinsettias. Hats are pre-formed colourful aluminium foil containers that hide the non-festive plant pot the poinsettia sits in. They can cause a big problem if they remain in place when you water your plants, and water you must. Hats have no drainage holes and if a poinsettia sits in very damp soil it will die. Take your plant pot out of the hat and do your watering. When the water has fully drained you may then put the pot back into the decorative hat.

While you are buying your poinsettias, take a look at Christmas cactus.

These are more diminutive than poinsettias but are tough and very pretty.

Like poinsettias they come in other colours besides red and I particularly like those with ivory flowers. When Christmas is over you can put individual plants into slightly larger containers and keep them happy until the next flowering, which will probably not be during a festive season. Christmas cactus is easily propagated by nipping off a stem with three sections. Bury half of the lower leaf section in potting mix and provide the normal care. The

best time to do this is during March and April. In a few months you will have new Christmas cactus plants that will survive summer if you give them sufficient shade.

You may be at the stage in your garden when you feel it is time to add some new plants that you do not normally grow. I have a few suggestions. Tomatillos are easy to raise though rather wild in their growth and awkward to stake upright properly.

Tomatillos are closely related to tomatoes but are more like Phaseolus, the Cape Gooseberry or Ground Cherry.

Although appreciably larger than Cape Goodeberries, tomatillos have the same papery covering. They are – as their name suggests – related to tomatoes but are not self-pollinating.

For pollination and fruit set we have to rely upon bees and bees just are not everywhere as they used to be.

Tomatillos have a distinct flavour that sharpens the taste of tomatoes when mixed in a salsa.

I have eight different varieties of basil in my yard and two of them in particular – lemon basil and lime basil – attract bees. When the plants are larger than they are now I will try a lemon basil pesto. For now I use a few leaves to flavour ice tea made with green tea.

This is a good time of year to start eggplant. Instead of growing Black Beauty try a white variety or a thin long fruiter. These can often find their way into a supper dish that would be dominated by a large eggplant. Smaller eggplant fruits do not need the salting that is often recommended for large varieties. Just cut them and cook them, adding your own seasonings.

If you in the situation where you have no more room in your garden and also have a large (2 cubic feet) bag of potting mix that is almost empty, maybe a quarter of a bag left, then grow Irish potatoes. Stab the bottom of the plastic bag several times to create drainage, then roll back the top over and over until you reach the soil level.

Plant your seed potato section about 5 inches deep and follow the usual rules for growing potatoes.

If you have plenty of room, try fennel. It is easy to grow and is a beautiful, graceful plant. The swollen section at the base can be cooked or used raw in salads. Italians love it and when it comes to food, they certainly know a thing or two.

Ten tips for novice

runners U

Compression socks.

GPS trackers. Wireless headphones. Gizmos and gadgets galore! While smartphones, smart watches and trackers can be useful tools for running sometimes they can be a major distraction.

The sport of running is as much mental as it is physical. Whether you’re running a 5k or a marathon, there is always a degree of will power and resilience that is required for you to train, perform and run efficiently and injury free. The success of the world’s fastest runners is not achieved on race day. Their journey to success begins in the training sessions, day in and day out. They commit to their training programmes. They practice nutritional and hydration habits that produce peak performance. In my short career as a half-marathoner I’ve been fortunate enough to gather inside knowledge from runners that are at the top of their game, recovered from injuries, and are running well into their 50s and 60s. I’ve also spent a great deal of time digesting research studies on the physiology of running. Below are ten helpful tips for newbie/novice runners.

. Get the proper shoes Shoe fitting is so important. Your arch, your gait, mileage and injury affect the type of you need to run efficiently and injury free. Running shoes can be a bit pricy but it pays to “pony up” and get the proper shoe.

. Hydration Is it important? YES! Can you over do it? Yes. Hydration helps and hinders. Hydration begins days leading up to race day. It doesn’t mean guzzling a five gallons of water before you head out for your race. Be careful with how much you hydrate during your run as well. Drinking too much water during you race can lead

to hyponatremia, also known as water intoxication, which can produce dangerously low blood sodium. On the lower end of the spectrum this can cause a diluting of an essential electrolyte (sodium) on the higher end of the spectrum (severe hyponatremia) it can lead to brain swelling and even death. Best guideline: Drink when you are thirsty.

. Form is fundamental During every run, no matter how long or how short ask yourself three questions: 1. Am I leaning forward? 2. Am I hydrated? 3. Am I favouring one side and not running evenly? Don’t over-obsess but remember proper posture is an important component of running. Run straight and tall. Don’t slouch. A slight lean forward can be advantageous but don’t lean forward excessively. If you must lean, lean from your ankles upward; not from your hips. Remember, your head should line up with your shoulders and you hips with your feet.

. Drink the coffee Yup, that’s right, I said it.

DRINK.THE.COFFEE. According to the Journal of Nutrition, coffee delivers more antioxidants than any other food group. In a 2016 study, The International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism concluded that pre-event consumption of coffee improved completion times by 3.1 percent. While a morning cup of joe can enhance your performance, it can also cause frequent bathroom visits.

Carefully plan your consumption time prior to the race. Be sure to use coffee on your training runs to know how your body will react.

. Avoid pre-run stretching Forget everything they told you in physical education class! If you stretch before running you run the risk of injury. This is especially true if your leg muscles have not warmed up yet.

The best way to warm up with a gentle walk, slow jog, lunges and squats. Runners should strength train. Make your

time in the gym count! Focus on strengthening muscles that you use during running: glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, calves and core muscles.

If you’ve been consistently following my column you know what and where all of those muscles are located.

6. Mileage first. Speed second This is a great tip for newbie runners. Never attempt to build mileage and speed at the same time. Build mileage first and speed later. Let’s say that you are attempting a 10k, marathon or half marathon for the first time, focus on increasing your mileage incrementally at a slow and relaxed pace. As you increase your running frequency you will become more efficient and therefore be able to run faster.

7. Carb load, but don’t overdo it Carb loading before your race day is both important and beneficial but it doesn’t require you to eat like a starving pig. First, choose clean carbs to consume: fruits, whole veggies, whole wheat pasta, brown rice et cetera. Second, don’t eat more than normal; rather just reduce your fats and proteins (and bulky high-volume meals like salads) and concentrate on high carb foods.

For half-marathoners and marathoners, keep it small and simple on race day. Have a bagel or toast with a spread of jam or honey. Some runners prefer bananas and or oatmeal. Whatever, you decide just make sure that it’s a breakfast you’ve consumed on your training days.

Training is an investment in the future of your running. You can’t train at your max and perform at your best. The harder you train, the more fatigue you will become. You need rest periods before the race to ensure that the body can replenish its energy stores. This will help you to perform at your best.

9. Use hill training to increase your speed Hill training provides more strength and speed stimulus than any other form of training.

Efficient hill running demands good form. Keep in mind that any amount of wasted effort will be multiplied as you progress uphill.

10. Enjoy the run At least once per week, run without a tracker.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in miles, finishing times, pace, mileage per week and split times.

While a competitive spirit is necessary to your success as a runner; you want to avoid running burnout as much as possible. There are days in my training schedule where I just head out the door on a Sunday morning and run as fast as I want for as long as I please. And that is not only good for my body but it’s good for my soul.

The magic and deceit of paste, pearls and diamonds Sir Christopher Ondaatje reveals four brilliant short stories all inspired

by Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace”.

“The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant Guy de Maupassant’s 1884 short story “The Necklace” (La Parure) features one of his most eloquent and twisted endings. Madame Mathilde Loisel has always aspired to be one among the rich and fashionable aristocrats. She is pretty and charming, but feels she has been born into a family of unfavourable economic status. She is married to a lower-middle-class clerk who can only afford to provide her with a modest though not uncomfortable lifestyle. She regrets her lot in life and dreams of a more extravagant existence.

One night her husband proudly brings home an invitation to a formal party hosted by the Ministry of Education, hoping that his wife will be thrilled at the opportunity to attend an event of this sort. Unwilling to go because she has nothing to wear, Mathilde’s husband gives her the four hundred francs he was saving to buy

a hunting rifle. Mathilde buys a dress, but she is still not happy, as she has no jewels to wear with it. Her husband suggests she buys flowers to wear with her new dress, but instead Mathilde borrows a diamond necklace from a wealthy friend, Madame Jeanne Forestier.

At the party, Mathilde is the most beautiful woman there and is intoxicated by the attention she receives. She has many admirers. At 4am she finally finds her husband, who is sleeping in an isolated room. They walk to find a cab and return home; sad that the night has ended. As she removes her coat Mathilde discovers that the necklace is no longer around her neck. In a panic, Monsieur Loisel retraces their steps trying to find it. Terrified she waits in vain for her husband to return. He has not found the necklace.

After a week the distraught couple visit many jewellers searching for a similar necklace and finally find one.

They have to pay 36,000 francs which they do not have. They sell everything they own and borrow heavily at high interest rates to pay for the necklace.

When Matilde returns the necklace in its case, Madame Forestier is annoyed that it has taken so long to get it back, but does not open and inspect the case.

Mathilde is relieved.

Beginning a life of crippling poverty, working at extra jobs, moving to a cheaper apartment, and doing heavy housework, the misery lasts 10 years and they finally reply their debts. But by then Matilde has lost her beauty, and both she and her husband are tired and damaged by their years of hardship.

One Sunday, while walking on the Champs Élysées, Mathilde sees her old friend Madame Forestier who does not recognise her. She then tells Madame Forestier the long saga of losing the necklace and how they lived the terrible years repaying debts to purchase the necklace. Horrified, Madame Forestier grabs Mathilde’s worn hands and explains that her original necklace was only a fake – made of paste, and not worth anything.

“Paste” by Henry James Henry James had met Guy de Maupassant several times. They were introduced to each other in 1875 by Gustave Flaubert and he read Maupassant’s work avidly, with fascination interspersed with moral misgiving.

When Henry James wrote “Paste” he had been reading Maupassant for nearly 20 years, and he openly admitted that Maupassant’s “The Necklace” had inspired him to write his short story – reversing the plot and replacing diamonds with pearls. Curiously he might even have meant his story as a pun. James had misremembered the title of Maupassant’s story as “Le Collier” (which also means “The Necklace”. The French verb Coller means “to paste”).

James was known to have objected to Maupassant’s vulgarity, while being enormously respectful of Maupassant’s gift to write stories. His story, “Paste”, is a tribute to the French author in which presumed counterfeit pearls are revealed to be genuine.

After the death of her aunt, the wife of a vicar, the protagonist Charlotte and her cousin, her aunt’s stepson Arthur Prime, find a tin of imitation jewellery which includes a string of pearls. Charlotte wonders if they could be a gift from an admirer when her aunt was an actress. Arthur disputes this and is horrified that any gentleman other than his father would have given his stepmother such a gift. Charlotte apologises and agrees that the pearls could be nothing more than paste.

Arthur offers them to her, and she keeps the jewellery in memory of her aunt.

Returning to her governess job, Charlotte is asked by a friend, a Mrs Guy (another oblique reference to Guy de Maupassant), whether she has anything to add colour to her dress for an upcoming party. Showing her the string of pearls, Mrs Guy wears the string of pearls to the party and is much admired; everyone believing that the pearls are real. Charlotte, thus feeling that she cannot repay Arthur’s generosity with deceit, insists that the necklace must be returned to her cousin. Mrs Guy, however, advises Charlotte to keep the pearls. Instead, Charlotte decides to give the pearls back to her cousin, realising that the expensive pearls were almost certainly a gift to her aunt from an admirer during her acting days. Arthur still refuses to consider the pearls real.

“Paste” is a 5,800-word short story included by Henry James in his collection, “The Soft Side”.

month later Mrs Guy shows Charlotte her wonderful string of pearls and explains that they are the same ones that Charlotte had inherited from her aunt. Charlotte is surprised because Arthur had told her he had shattered them, when in fact he had sold the pearls to the store where Mrs Guy had bought them.

In “Paste” Henry James explains the contrast between reality and illusion.

He consciously reversed Maupassant’s grim melodrama of a fake necklace thought to be real into a story of a real necklace thought to be fake. The story ends with the lurid suggestion that Mrs Guy might well have obtained the necklace from Arthur in a private transaction.

of appearance, Maugham’s story “A String of Beads” centers on a certain Miss Robinson who is governess to the wealthy Livingstone family. One night she is invited to dine with the family and a few of their distinguished guests as one guest has had to cancel her invitation at the last moment.

Among the guests is Miss Lyngate who is particularly proud of the pearl necklace she is wearing and asks Count Borselli, another guest, to look at them. But shockingly Count Borselli – an expert on jewellery – seems much more impressed by the string of pearls around Miss Robinson’s neck.

“This string of pearls cost eight thousand pounds,” said Miss Lyngate.

“Yes, that is the correct price,” said Count Borselli.

At that moment Count Borselli pointed to Miss Robinson.

“That is a very nice string of pearls,” he said.

Miss Lyngate was now angry as lowly governesses did not wear strings of pearls.

“We’re not talking about governesses,” replied the Count. “We’re talking about pearls. That string of pearls is worth more than fifty thousand pounds”.

“I paid fifteen shillings for these beads,” said Miss Robinson quietly.

Miss Lyngate laughed mockingly.

“I knew that Count Borselli was wrong.”

“I do not make mistakes,” said the Count quietly. “I know the value of pearls.

At that moment a servant spoke quietly to Miss Robinson whose face went white. Embarrassed, she said, “Excuse me, Mrs Livingstone. I must leave the table. Two men are waiting for me in the hall.”

Following a period of silence a relaxed and happy Miss Robinson reentered the room clasping a string of pearls in her hand. She sat down and passed the pearls to Count Borselli.

“How much are these pearls worth?” she asked.

“Fifteen shillings,” he said.

“That’s correct,” replied Miss Robinson. “My beads were broken and I took them to a shop a few days ago.

When I went to get them, there was a mistake. The shop gave me the wrong string of pearls. That other string was worth fifty thousand pounds ... They’ve given me a present of three hundred pounds.”

Mrs Livingstone stopped everyone talking. “What are you going to do with the money? ... You must put it in a bank. You must keep it safely. You may need it one day.”

“I’m not going to put the money in a bank,” replied Miss Robinson proudly. “All my life I’ve never had a holiday. Now I’m going to the South of France.”

“You can leave at the end of the month,” said Mrs Livingstone angrily.

“There will be no job for you here.”

“I don’t want to come back here,” replied Miss Robinson. And she got up quietly and left the room.

Six months later, at another dinner, Miss Lyngate, Count Borselli, and other friends met, when someone brought up Miss Robinson’s name.

“I’ve just come from the South of France,” said the Count. “Everyone there is talking about Miss Robinson.

But that’s not her name now. She’s a Countess. She met a Count in her hotel and married him soon afterwards. The Count is a millionaire and she now lives with him in Paris. She’ll never work as a governess again.”

“And all because of a mistake,” said Miss Lyngate. “A cheap string of beads!”

“Mr Know-All” by W Somerset Maugham Somerset Maugham’s “Mr KnowAll” is a short story with a moral lesson. Appearances are not always what they appear to be. Shortly after World War I the narrator of the story, a British citizen, meets a Levantine jeweller, Mr Kelada, and is forced to share a cabin with him at a time when passenger traffic on ocean-liners was particularly heavy. The 14-day journey was from San Francisco to Yokohama.

He disliked Mr Kelada even before he had met him, and even more after three days. Kelada organised everything, and was the best and the most hated man on the ship. He was soon nicknamed “Mr Know-All”. He forced himself on to the dinner table which also included a doctor, a man from the American Consular Service, a Mr Ramsey, and his pretty wife with pleasant manners. The Consular Service was ill paid, but Mrs Ramsey wore clothes with simple good taste, and achieved an air of quiet distinction.

One evening the dinner conversation drifted to the subject of pearls and the difference between cultured pearls, which the Japanese were making, and the real ones. The doctor remarked that the cultured would eventually diminish the value of the others, but Mr Kelada, who admitted that he was in the pearl business, boasted” “They’ll never be able to get a cultured pearl that an expert like me can’t tell with half an eye.” Then he pointed to a chain that Mrs Ramsey was wearing and admiring it said, “You take my word for it, Mrs Ramsey, that chain you’re wearing will never be worth a cent less than it is now.”

Somerset Maugham’s “Mr Know-All” was part of a 1950 British anthology film based on three short stories by the writer.

“That’s a pretty chain of Mrs Ramsey’s, isn’t it? I didn’t buy it myself, of course. But I’d be interested to know how much you think it cost.”

“Oh,” Kelada replied. “In the trade somewhere round fifteen thousand dollars. But if it was bought on Fifth Avenue I shouldn’t be surprised to hear anything up to thirty thousand was paid for it.”

Ramsey smiled triumphantly.

“You’ll be surprised to hear that Mrs Ramsey bought that string at a department store the day before we left New York, for eighteen dollars.”

“Rot,” Kelada said. “It’s not only real, but it’s as fine a string for its size I’ve ever seen.”

“Will you bet on it? I’ll bet you a hundred dollars it’s imitation.”

“Done ... Let me look at the chain, and if it’s imitation I’ll tell you quickly enough. I can afford to lose a hundred dollars,” said Mr Kelada.

Ramsey jumped up, undid the clasp, and handed the chain to Mr Kelada.

The Levantine took a magnifying glass from his pocket and closely examined it. A smile spread over his swarthy face. He handed back the chain and was about to speak. Suddenly he

caught sight of Mrs Ramsey’s face. It was so white that she looked as if she were about to faint. She was staring at him with wide terrified eyes. They held a desperate appeal.

Mr Kelada stopped with his mouth open. He flushed deeply.

“I was mistaken,” he said. “It’s a very good imitation, but of course as soon as I looked through my glass I saw that it wasn’t real. I think eighteen dollars is just about as much as it is worth. He took out his pocketbook and from it a hundred dollar note. He handed it to Ramsey.

“Perhaps that’ll teach you not to be so cocksure another time, my young friend,” Ramsey said as he took the note.

The story spread over the ship as stories do. It was a fine joke that Mr Know-All had been caught out. But Mrs Ramsey retired to her stateroom with a headache.

Next morning ... there was a small scraping sound and a letter was pushed under the door. It was addressed to Mr Kelada in his cabin. He took out of the envelope, not a letter, but a hundreddollar note.

“No one likes being made to look a perfect damned fool,” he said. “If I had a pretty little wife I shouldn’t let her spend a year in New York alone while I stayed at Kobe.”

Kelada reached for his pocketbook and carefully put in the hundred dollar note. He had sacrificed his own pride and reputation to save an American lady’s marriage.

*** Before Guy de Maupassant died of syphilis in 1893, he had authored over 300 short stories, six novels, three travel books and one volume of verse. He is still considered today to be one of the masters of the modern short story – his economy of style and efficient, effortless denouements being the inspiration for countless other short story writers. He was only 42 years old.

Who were the Loyalists?

S

imply put, Loyalists were settlers in the 13 British colonies in North America who supported King George III at a time when many of their neighbours were fighting for independence from Britain.

When Britain lost the war and those 13 colonies became the United States of America, Loyalists were not welcome and were deprived of their homes, plantations, and many of other rights. Several of my mother’s ancestors came here as Loyalists.

Generally speaking, the older Loyalists had been born in England, Scotland and other parts of the British Isles and emigrated to ‘America’, but they and their descendants, wanted to continue to live under the British Crown and the Bahamas was the most convenient place to go, and

close enough to North America that they could dream of, one day, returning to reclaim their former holdings.

Only six of our 700 islands were inhabited and family names like Adderley, Albury, Bethell, Sands, Saunders, identified descendants of the Eleutherian Adventurers. To show their disdain for these Bahamians, the “snooty” Loyalists called them “conchs”.

In return, those conchs called the new-arrivals “refugees”, to remind them that they were lucky to, be here.

In 1648, about 100 Eleutherian Adventurers had come from Bermuda and settled these islands and, 115 years later, the total population (of the present Bahama Islands) had increased to only 4,143 people, spread out as follows: Cat Island – 43 Eleuthera – 746 Exumas – 30

Harbour Island & Spanish Wells – 500 New Providence – 2,824

There was nobody living on Abaco, Acklins, Andros, the Berry Islands, Bimini, Crooked Island, Grand Bahama, Inagua, Long Cay (later called Fortune Island), Long Island, Mayaguana, Ragged Island and Watlings Island (now San Salvador) but, with the influx of thousands of Loyalists and their more thousands of slaves, the new arrivals vastly outnumbered the “Bahamians” and life in the islands was never the same again. Plantations and plantation houses became the norm.

Colonel Andrew Deveaux has gone down in Bahamian history as the Loyalist who led the 1783 attack that recaptured New Providence from its Spanish occupiers. Deveaux did not stay here long, but the

ruins of his father’s plantation house on Cat Island are a tourist attraction. Secondin-Command was Major Archibald Taylor and the ruins of his plantation house, badly damaged by recent hurricanes, can still be seen near the town that Taylor founded. In Taylor’s day the name was Great Harbour; now it’s Clarence Town, Archibald and his brother, Duncan Taylor, were important players in salt production and Duncan gave his name to Duncan Town, Ragged Island.

Another name that returned with Deveaux is William Lyford, who once owned a then-separate island called Lyford Cay. The western tip of that island is now owned

by Peter Nygard, who calls his estate Nygard Cay. Nature joined the once-separate cay to New Providence and the

name Lyford has spread to the entire Lyford Cay community.

Architecture was another thing that was revolutionised.

Bahamian houses were generally, small, wooden structures, many with unfinished interior walls. The “new” arrivals left us substantial structures, such as the Gaol, St Matthew’s church, St Andrew’s Kirk and the government buildings at Rawson Square. Loyalist buildings are still the more attractive of the last century.

Archibald Taylor and his descendants left us surnames like Forsyth, McQueen and Nairn, and two former occupants of Government House – Dame Ivy Dumont and Sir Henry Taylor.
