Roberts advances to quarter-finals

ustin Roberts, still celebrating his birthday and the Ministry of Sports’ recognition with the Leevan ‘Superman’ Sands Courage Award, continues to turn in some tremendous performances in his comeback from an injury as he advanced to the quarterfinal of the International Tennis Federation’s USA F35 Futures in Tallahassee, Florida.

After turning 22 years old on Tuesday to go with the Ministry’s honour of the Courage award during their 2018 National Awards Night at SuperClub Breezes on Saturday, Roberts pulled off a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) win over American Paul Oosterbaan in a match that lasted one hour and 29 minutes yesterday.

Oosterbaan, 23, is ranked at 777 in the world, while Roberts, the only Bahamian player with any ATP points, is pegged at 1,970. So it was a remarkable achievement for Roberts, who advanced out

of the qualifying round over the weekend. He won his first round match 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 over qualifying lucky loser Enzo Wallart from France on Tuesday. He will now prepare to take on No.2 seed Dmitry Popko, a 22-year-old from Kazakhstan, who is ranked 515.

Immediately following the match, Roberts had to prepare for a final exam so he was unavailable for comments.

However, when contacted, his father Bruno Roberts was thrilled to sing the praises of his son.

“With Justin coming back the way he did from the injury, that is huge,” he said. “We are excited for him. He works hard. He’s a smart kid. He could be doing whatever he wants to do, but he loves tennis.

So we will continue to support him. At the end of the day, it’s all up to him in whatever he does between those lines (on the tennis court).”

And in the classroom as well.

AFTER completing primary school at St Cecilia’s, Raynell Young has taken her talent to South Florida where she’s starring both athletically as a versatile basketball and track and field athlete and academically as an honour roll student for the Attucks Middle School in Hollywood, Florida.

On Monday, she helped the Eagles girls’ basketball team win the Broward County District Championships with a 39-34 win over the Sawgrass Middle School Giants.

In that game, she finished with eight points, 10 assists and five steals. As the starting point guard, she’s averaging 15 points, 12 assists and three steals per game. In the two years she has been at Attucks

Scheidt takes early lead after boat breaking final race

By JAMES BOYD www.sailingintelligence.com RACING at this sixth edition of the Star Sailors League Finals got off to a dramatic first day of competition in Nassau, with four races held, four different winners and a last race in which a squall brought driving rain and 25 knot gusts that claimed one rig and caused one man overboard.

In a 10-12 knot northerly, Brazil started strongly with Olympic legends Robert Scheidt and Henry Boening claiming the first race and Lars Grael and Samuel Gonçalves the second.

“We made a good choice starting at the race committee and tacking to the right - we had a very good puff on the right to cross the fleet,” explained double Olympic medallist Grael, whose performance here is all the more remarkable as he has just one leg.

“Once you are ahead you have a margin to protect and the sailing gets much easier, whereas if you get stuck in the crowd it is very tough.”

Mark Mendelblatt, historically the Star Sailors League Finals’ most successful helm, sailing with his regular crew Brian Fatih, relieved Poland’s Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Dominik Zycki of the lead in race three. The American recounted his race: “We took the line bias, which was pin-favoured, and managed to get across the

fleet pretty early. We got a little rightie at the end and rounded third and at the bottom we chose the right gate, which was the correct one. Then we were able to get to the right of Mateusz at the top of the second beat when the big rightie came in and that got us around him and we were able to hold on down the run. In this fleet when you get ahead, it makes the race a lot easier…”

A front had been forecast to arrive in the afternoon and this finally stuck half way through the final race, when the skies darkened, rain began plummeting and breeze kicking up a sharp chop. Despite this, Miami’s Augie Diaz - this year’s Star European Champion made it look easy.

“We kept thinking the right would come in like that,” Diaz explained. “We had a great start at the committee boat and were first boat off the line. We held for a little bit and then as soon as we felt we had a little phase to go right on, we went hard right and then it was a case of the rich getting richer. But Cayard went all the way left and he came in second at the top mark!”

As the squall hit, Diaz said they had had such a lead that played it safe by reaching downwind, a technique making it easier to gybe.

Meanwhile Grael admitted he was slightly surprised to have finished

and then the main, but by the time he had been hauled back on board, they had dropped to last place.

Despite this they ended the day third overall.

After four races and with one discard applied, Robert Scheidt and Henry Boening lead the Star Sailors League Finals by two points, the Brazilians having won the first race.

“We started at the pin and chose the left side of the course and the shift went our way,” explained Scheidt of that race. “If you can go around the top mark in the top three, life gets a lot easier. It was a tough day. It was quite shifty with flat water and towards the end of the day we had the big right shift with the wind increasing.

“We managed to climb back from some bad situations, which was good, but we still need more boat speed upwind and we had bad starts in two races. The level is very high and it is difficult to do everything well. We are happy - we’ll keep chipping away, but with four races a day a lot of things can happen. You see guys breaking masts and it is very easy to start over early and risk too much at the start.”

The forecast for tomorrow is for the northeasterly wind to resume.

“Hopefully we’ll get more waves which will make things more interesting, especially downwind,” Scheidt said.

LOURAWLS ‘TUM TUM’ NAIRN MAKING HIS MARK ON THE SIDELINES

PHOENIX, Arizona — The focus for much of the night was on the history making efforts of Buddy Hield and Deandre Ayton, but another Bahamaian basketball figure continues to make his mark on the sidelines.

Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn is currently on staff with the Phoenix Suns in their front office with a role in player development this season.

Nairn was in the midst of preparing his pursuit of a professional career on the court when he got the NBA opportunity with the Suns to take his career in another direction.

“It was kind of a crazy thing,” he said. “A week and-a-half before the draft they called me and just

loved what I did in college and wanted me to be a part of the organisation.”

Heralded for his leadership skills during his tenure in East Lansing, Michigan, Nairn was awarded the Stephen G Scofes Inspirational Player Award for three straight seasons.

He also said his new career path gave him an opportunity to witness the everyday development of Deandre Ayton.

“Just being able to touch the players and work on their skill development is a blessing. I don’t really get to work with Deandre one on one but I help the other coaches out with whatever they need.

“It’s been good to be here with him and see how great of a player he actually is firsthand. I watched him at Arizona but now watching him close up everyday has been good.”

The appointment with the Suns added another milestone during a year for Nairn. The new job came after he penned his debut as an author with an autobiography entitled “Purpose Driven.”

“It’s a blessing just to be able to write a book coming where I come from, living in Bain Town in Nassau,

just to do that is something special for me,” he said.

“I finished the book around July 17 so I’ve been at it for a while but being able to accomplish that and move on to this, where I’m from people don’t get to do that. To see Buddy and Deandre on this level and myself in coaching, it just helps other kids back home

to see that they can do the same thing.”

The book details the story of Nairn’s life and his journey from the Bahamas to elite Division I NCAA basketball and beyond.

“I did not write Purpose Driven for people to look at what I went through and say, ‘Wow Tum has been through a lot.’ I wrote it because I wanted people to read what I went through and reflect on what they are going through and say, ‘If Tum can make it through what he went through, I can make it through what I’m going through,’” Nairn posted on Instagram. “By the grace of God, writing this book has been one of my greatest accomplishments yet. I pray you are all inspired and motivated to never give up no matter what you’re going through.

Nairn was also the former high school teammate of Hield at Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas before both parted ways for their respective collegiate careers.

The two shared a moment prior to the Suns and Kings matchup. “Tum Tum is like a brother to me. He’s not playing professional basketball but he found a way in the sport to make a living for himself and his family and that’s a great thing,” Hield said.

“I know his book is going to be a success because his story is amazing and he has so many life lessons to share with people. I’m going to buy a bunch of his books and make sure kids back home can have them and be inspired by his story to get to where he is today.”

The goal this year is to surpass last year’s second round of the Broward County Championships.

With Young as the captain and point guard, head coach Michael Jean said they can achieve their ultimate goal on Monday when the final is held. “With the way she is playing, we’re going to win the county championship on Monday,” said Jean of Young, who is also the captain of their track and field team. “There is no more expectations. We are going to win and Raynell is going to lead the team. I’ve never seen a point guard like this girl in Middle School.

“She makes every other player on the team look good. She makes sure that the kids get the ball where they are supposed to.

If they are not where they are supposed to be, she alters her game to make sure that they get the ball to shoot. And she defends the ball. She plays like she should be in college. Her skill level is like college and she is just in middle school (grade 6-8).”

Off the court, Jean said Young serves as the vice president of Entering Tomorrow’s Leaders, a programme that allows the eighth graders to mentor a sixth grader.

“She’s doing all of this and still keeps her grades up,” Jean stressed.

Young, the 15-year-old eighth grader, said she’s excited about

being at Attucks and the opportunity to help in whatever way she can.

“I feel great. We have a very good team and everybody plays together on the court,” she said.

“This year, I expect for us to win the championship,” added Young.

As for what she brings to the table, Young said she’s just glad to be able to make her contribution.

“As the point guard and captain, I’m just glad that I can help them,” she pointed out. “Over here, it’s a little more advanced than girls over there and we play in the gym in front of a lot of

people and we play more games.

So you have to go out there and perform.”

She noted that once she’s done with high school, her goal is to get a scholarship to play for UCLA and then go on to play in the Women’s National Basketball Association.

She’s certainly on the right path and nobody is more thrilled about her progress than her father, Cedric ‘Space’ Sweeting. He said he has been thrilled by her performance, which he feels is going to outshine that of her older sister Cedricka, who recently graduated from college. “They have a good basketball programme and a good academic programme,” he said.

“She has adjusted very well and based on what I’ve seen, I think she will be better than Cedricka.

When you compare them at the eighth grader, Raynell is better and she is bigger. I expect that she will only get better. I’m really proud of her. She’s a 4.0 student too. We have some decisions to make because everybody in the gym is watching her play. They want her to come to their high school, but we haven’t decided on where she will go yet. She has plenty options.”

Jean said Young’s parents are the most supportive in the school, showing up “for everything she is involved in,” which is one of the reasons why she has been so successful.

Column: Why it was special for Rahm to beat his hero, Tiger

By DOUG FERGUSON AP Golf Writer NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Three victories in three countries against fields large and small, strong and weak, couldn’t make Jon Rahm’s year any better.

Nothing could top one win that offered no money, no world ranking points or even a trophy to call his own.

He beat Tiger Woods in the Ryder Cup. “I don’t think there’s anything I can do in the game anytime soon that’s going to mean more than that,” Rahm said.

When he spoke late Sunday afternoon after a four-shot victory in the Bahamas, the Masters was still 130 days away. That’s the next major, and majors are the greatest achievement for any player. Rahm is no exception.

But yes, that Ryder Cup was special.

If his tears that Sunday at Le Golf National didn’t show that, Rahm spoke for just over 4 minutes and used 638 words to explain.

His year ended with Woods presenting him the trophy from the Hero World Challenge, but really that was the start of his story. As they looked at the trophy, where Woods’ name first shows up in 2001, Rahm said Woods asked, “How old were you?”

Rahm was 7.

“I saw him win a great deal of events, grew up with a dream of someday beating him, and to do it on the Sunday or a Ryder Cup ... it was extremely special,” he said.

Seve Ballesteros inspired him, and still does. Woods motivated the 24-year-old Spaniard, as he did for so many other young players from Rahm’s generation. He studied Woods, including a recent documentary for the British Open that helped on Sunday at Albany.

“He said once he got in the lead, his goal was to never go back to the field, to have the field catch him,” Rahm said.

That wasn’t the only film Rahm has watched.

He says he probably has seen every video on Woods

So that was my first train of thought,” Rahm said.

He spent time that night and the next morning talking to his mental coach, European captain Thomas Bjorn and Tommy Fleetwood, who had experience playing Woods, including all three of Woods’ losses that week. He thought about a strategy, which turned out to be the easy part. Woods doesn’t make a lot of mistakes, so the Ryder Cup rookie better be close to flawless.

The gallery was the largest on the course, and not because Rahm was playing.

Turns out it was Woods who made the mistakes, with bogeys on the 13th and 14th holes to fall 2 down.

Rahm missed a short putt on the 16th hole, giving him a 1-up lead with two to play.

He responded with a shot into 5 feet on the 17th and a chance to close out his golfing idol.

Rahm never lacks for emotions, and by now they were raging.

His grandfather died on the Sunday of the PGA

“She had no idea about golf, and I would just get the laptop and make her watch all the highlights of Tiger,” Rahm said. “I’ve seen Tiger’s final round at Pebble in 2000 about 150 times.”

And that brings him to Saturday night outside Paris.

Europe had a 10-6 lead with Rahm contributing a point in his first Ryder Cup. “Kind of felt like I was letting the team down,” he

said. Rahm knew he would be in the No. 4 spot for Europe, and then the US lineup was revealed. He was expecting to see Woods toward the back because that’s where he had been the last two times he played, at No. 8 in Wales and No. 12 at Medinah.

This time, Woods was at No. 4 against Rahm.

“I’m like, ‘Great.’ To me, the greatest golfer of all time that I’ve been able to see, he just won at East Lake, he’s 0-3, I was 0-2.

Championship and was on his mind.

As he settled over the putt, he heard a Spanish voice in the gallery yell, “Do it for Seve!” Rahm could picture both of them watching and thought to himself, “There’s no way them two are going to allow me to miss the putt.”

He dropped his putter and lost his mind when the putt went in.

“It’s all that feeling, right?” Rahm said. “I tried to stay as balanced as possible, I never got mad, even after missing the putt on 16. Making the putt to beat Tiger Woods, my all-time hero ... man, it was hard.”

He was screaming and hugging and forgot for a moment that Woods had walked across the green to congratulate him.

“He came to me with a smile,” Rahm said. “He said, ‘Man, don’t even worry, you played great.’

And I started crying in front of Tiger. It was such an emotional moment.”

That’s how much it meant to him, because that’s how much Woods means to him.

Titans, 6-6, are still in the playoff chase

By BARRY WILNER AP Pro Football Writer JACKSONVILLE won the AFC South and Tennessee earned a wild-card playoff berth out of the division last season.

Now, they get the primetime spotlight on Thursday even though both are also-rans.

Oh, the Titans (6-6) still are in the playoff chase.

But it’s difficult to take serious a team that needs a late rally to beat the Jets.

What’s happened to the Jaguars (4-8) is stunning. One quarter away from winning the AFC in January, they snapped a seven-game slide last Sunday by shutting down Andrew Luck and the Colts 6-0.

The Jags will have running back Leonard Fournette, who was suspended for the Indy game.

Tennessee has been vulnerable to the run.

“Getting him back is going to be a huge boost, especially for our team,” safety Tashaun Gipson says.

“We’re a physical team and we want to run the ball, get your playmakers the ball, and obviously he’s the best player we have on the offensive side of the ball.”

The Titans’ best offensive player is, well, that’s a

tough one. They rank 28th overall in yardage and only four teams have scored fewer than Tennessee’s 221 points.

No. 16 (tie) Tennessee is a 4½-point favorite over No. 26 Jacksonville.

This should be a defensive standoff but, no, we can’t go with 6-0.

DAVIE, Florida (AP) — On the same day NFL interception leader Xavien Howard was honoured as the AFC defensive player of the week, he sat out practice with a sore knee.

So it goes for the Miami Dolphins, with injuries continuing to outnumber achievement.

Howard joined his team’s long injury list yesterday, and his availability is uncertain for this week’s game against New England.

Fellow Dolphins cornerback Bobby McCain said he was confident Howard will play. Coach Adam Gase sounded less optimistic, describing Howard’s status as week to week. Gase declined to rule out surgery,

(AP) — For each of the past two seasons, the identity of the Patriots defence didn’t become clear until late in the year.

Both times the group had stumbles early, followed by steady improvement. Those leaps were aided at least in part by the increased contributions of newcomers or role players that previously had much smaller roles.

That pattern is holding true in 2018 as the Patriots prepare for back-to-back road games at Miami and Pittsburgh that will go a long way in determining their playoff seeding.

Earlier this season, New England’s opponents took advantage of a defence that struggled to get pressure up front and that was susceptible to giving up big plays in the secondary.

After allowing 300 or more passing yards four times in its first seven games, New England (9-3) has not allowed a 300-yard passer in five straight games. It also has not allowed a 100yard rusher in nine straight games, going back to Week 3 against the Lions when Kerryon Johnson did it.

Those are important markers for a Patriots defence that has had trouble recently at Miami. New England is 17-7 against the Dolphins since 2007, but has lost four of its past five at Hard Rock Stadium.

Ryan Tannehill threw for 350 yards and two TDs in the Dolphins’ 20-10 win in the 2015 regular-season finale in Miami.

That came a season after Knowshon Moreno rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown in Miami’s 33-20 win to open the 2014 season.

Tannehill had two touchdown passes in that game to help the Dolphins outscore the Patriots 23-0 in the second half.

“It’s a week-to-week challenge in the season,” Patriots Bill Belichick said of his defence’s evolving identity. “We haven’t established anything against Miami, so we’ll have to go down and do that on Sunday and we’ll see what happens. Certainly, they’ll be a big challenge for us.”

Since allowing a seasonhigh 40 points in their win over Kansas City in Week 6, only two teams have scored more than 17 against the Patriots over the past six games — Chicago (38-31 win over the Bears) and Tennessee (34-10 loss to the Titans).

Howard was hurt when tackled returning an interception during Sunday’s 21-17 win over Buffalo . He missed one play and then rejoined the lineup, but the injury worsened after the game.

Howard has seven interceptions, including two in each of the past two games, and had two interceptions the previous time he faced Tom Brady. Howard seemed destined for his first Pro Bowl, and Gase didn’t try to sugarcoat the magnitude of losing the third-year pro.

“If you throw the ball at him and you’re inaccurate, he’s not just going to knock

it down — he’s going to pick it off,” Gase said.

“He’s one of our best players, if not our best player, on that side of the ball. You’re not going to replace him.”

The Patriots, already favoured by more than a touchdown on the road, would love not having to worry about Howard.

“He’s an outstanding player,” coach Bill Belichick said before learning of the injury. “He’s got very good instincts, very good ball skills. The interception he made against us last year and the one against the Colts this year were two of the best plays a corner could make, getting in good position and then finding the ball late and making a good catch. He’s a playmaker.”

Led by Howard, the Dolphins (6-6) have used turnovers to stay competitive. They rank second in the NFL with 19 interceptions and third with 25 takeaways.

As a result, they’re on the fringe of the playoff race despite a depleted roster.
