Death Notice For John Maxwell “Mack” Pinder, 75
It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Mack Pinder. Mack passed away at his home on Village Green on Wednesday November 24th, 2021 after a long illness. Mack was predeceased by his parents Whitney and Cleo Pinder and brother Eric (Hook) Pinder. Mack is survived by his devoted wife, Gloria, his son Nicholas and his daughter in law, Krystianna. He is also survived by his brothers, Philip (Karen), Michael (Stella) all of Nassau Bahamas and his three sisters, Eileen Morse of St. Petersburgh, Florida, Daphne Hamon (Keith) of Macon Georgia and Andrea Sheidy (Scott) of Naples, Florida. Closest relatives include, three Uncles, Keith, Mark & Peter Gates, two Aunts, Margaret Fox and Irene Lowe, Sister-in-Law Diann Statham from Ottawa, Canada, Cousins, David Pinder, Colin Pinder (Dana), Craig Pinder and Perry Pinder, Welton Fox (Lynn), and Pastor Jennings Simms. Mac had seven Nieces and two Nephews and was affectionally known as “Uncle Mack” to many, many more, including his wife’s Canadian family and friends. Mack was well loved and there has been a huge outpouring of love and condolences from friends and family. A memorial service will be announced in the very near future. Instead of flowers the family requests that donations be sent to a charity of your choice in memory of John (Mack) Pinder.

Bringing people of different faiths together to solve the world’s problems is a noble goal – but it’s hard to know what it achieves By Katherine O'Lone (THE CONVERSATION) - An estimated 84 percent of the global population identifies with a religion. This is over 6.5 billion people. Among thousands of world religions, Christianity is the largest, with 2.3 billion followers. The second, and fastest growing, is Islam with 1.8 billion followers. Religion is often seen as a major driver of conflict and, according to a 2018 report from the US-based Pew Research Center, religiously motivated violence is on the rise. Yet most religions, at their core, aim to build peace and foster reconciliation. Bringing people from different faiths together is often seen as a way to tackle the world’s most pressing problems. This is what’s known as the interfaith movement and initiatives range from shared meals in local places of worship to high-level acts of international diplomacy. Israel and Palestine, for example, have over 190 active interfaith organisations in operation. The All Nation Café is one such endeavour. Situated in a buffer zone between the Israeli Army checkpoint and the Palestinian Authority, the café is an easily accessible meeting place for Israelis and Palestinians. The café engages with young people on both sides of the conflict and provides a neutral space to foster dialogue and empowerment.

Photo:Reddees/Shutterstock But despite the commendable intentions and enthusiasm of all involved, interfaith has its critics. For some, interfaith is no more than virtue signalling. For others less cynical, but no less sceptical, the goals of interfaith – such as world peace or the reconciliation of all religious differences – seem lofty and vague. While conversations between people of different faiths appear to make a difference, and despite significant contributions made by faith communities, knowing if anything works remains a challenge, as the effectiveness of interfaith initiatives are rarely measured or evaluated. This is what our latest project aims to address.
We have spent two years listening to interfaith organisations and studying decades of psychological research on intergroup relations to find out what a successful interfaith project or collaboration looks like. Global reach The birth of modern interfaith can be traced back to the first Parliament of the World’s Religions, held in Chicago in 1893. More recently, key events such as 9/11 have thrust interfaith onto the global stage. The continued presence of religious conflict, extremism and prejudice in society has compelled many to seek solutions within interfaith practice. There are global
projects such as the G20’s Interfaith Forum, national initiatives such as the UK government’s Near Neighbours programme – which aims to bring religiously and ethnically diverse communities together – and the Jewish Muslim women’s network Nisa Nashim, and myriad local groups engaging in arts, sports and scripture studies across religious divides. Interfaith groups often have bold ambitions, whether for their local area or the world at large. How realistic these ambitions are is hard to assess. For some, success might be the cessation of hostilities between faith communities. For others, success could be an increased closeness to
Wider change Indeed, encounters between people of different faiths might lead to more positive attitudes towards other faith groups. But for interfaith to be truly successful, changes within individuals must spread, or be “transferred”, throughout whole communities and into wider society. There are many examples of interfaith work at a community level – such as coordinated responses to COVID-19 or faith groups coming together to tackle knife crime. But many of these examples, as wellintentioned as they are, lack proper evidence to gauge the longer-term impact on wider community relations. Another example is the ParliaMentors programme, an interfaith initiative that equips young students of all faiths with the skills, knowledge and networks needed to become leaders in their local communities. Students are mentored by an MP and contribute towards various initiatives. Camden Cares, was set up as part of the ParliaMentors programme to address the lack of integration opportunities for young asylum seekers. Young leaders from different faith backgrounds came
together and, in partnership with two local refugee charities, the project ran two sports events for young asylum seekers at Arsenal’s football ground, the Emirates Stadium in London. And again, while the project itself was considered a success, it is hard to know what the wider community impacts may have been. While such examples demonstrate the good work of interfaith groups and faith communities across the world, knowing what works and what might work better would help groups design more effective programmes. This is why, as part of our work, we have created a resource that allows local interfaith groups to measure their effectiveness. Helping interfaith initiatives quantify their success will allow them to identify areas that are not working. This is important because this knowledge will allow for initiatives to improve. The comings Advent is the season in the Church’s history. Christmas is the celebration of the First Coming and the Second is yet to come. The Collect for the First Sunday in Advent is: “Give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armour
of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when He shall come gain in His glorious majesty, to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to life immortal.” Advent invites us to not rush into Christmas celebration and forget Advent preparations. The Second Coming is even more significant that the First, as wonderful as it is. 3. The wreath The three purple or blue candles mark three of four weeks, while the rose or pink candle represents the third week offering some refreshment. The white Christmas candle in the centre is lit on Christmas Day. As the candles are lit, there are different prayers each week. Words such as light, hope, freedom, peace and joy are captured in our reflections. “Joyful hope” and being “joyfully ready” speak of the emotion we are to feel as we await the two possible Comings.
A HOMEMADE ADVENT WREATH We are reminded to wake up and focus on the light of the candles. We are to engage in intentional, deliberate spiritual discipline to prepare with joy. 4. A CHRONICLE OF A LIFE IN THE CHILDREN OF GOD 'SEX CULT' By MAE ANDERSON Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Faith Jones’ vivid memoir “Sex Cult Nun” chronicles her 23 years in the infamous Children of God cult and her slow journey to leave. Born into the cult in 1977 in Hong Kong, Jones was cult royalty, the granddaughter of leader David Berg. One of the first religious sects to be dubbed a “sex cult,” The Children
of God has received media attention over the years, including a “Children of God” documentary (1994) and the “Children of the Cult” Discovery+ series (2021). Actors River Phoenix and Rose McGowan were famously members. And writer Lauren Hough addresses her experience in her book of essays "Leaving Isn’t the Hardest Thing." But the length of Jones’ tenure in the cult and her position as the
granddaughter of Berg gives her a unique perspective on why its nefarious teachings compelled tens of thousands of people to join over its decades of existence. She recalls some happy moments, like playing with friends and animals at the farmstead in Macau where she lived as a child, and triumphing over difficult chores and punishments, even as she recounts being abused and manipulated in the name of “The Family” time and time again.
Berg was an elusive leader, hiding his whereabouts and communicating his beliefs with followers mostly through illustrated newsletters – Jones never met her own grandfather. The gospel he preached was focused on utter devotion to his teaching about the word of God. But Berg’s addition was the “Law of Love.” In his doctrine, sex was godly and should be encouraged between everyone, including children and adults. For

women and girls to say no to a Family member meant being labeled “unyielding” and going against God. Jones was a true believer, and tried to pray her way out of her revulsion at the sexual abuse she endured and the punishments she had to go through to be “rehabilitated” for minor infractions like not smiling enough. She even reports on herself when she is racked with guilt for kissing a “Systemite” – a non “Family” member. But slowly she began to see a world outside of the cult, through clandestine novels like “The Secret
Garden,” and a glimpse at American education when her parents visit the US. She begins to question why being in The Family makes her so unhappy even though she is so devout. There’s no dramatic exit for Jones. At 23, she decides to go to college, and informs The Family she is leaving. Even though she has little formal education, her experience growing up in six countries and learning three languages wows her entrance interviewer at Georgetown, where she gets a scholarship. She goes on to UC Berkeley law school.

There is another scripture that I can share with you to the affect and it is 1 Peter 5:6-7. It reads: ‘Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.’ God is for sure one person you know will always, and I mean always, have your back,” said Camila. Trevor Moss said all his life he has known God to be an almighty and powerful God. He said while some people should leave their troubles in God’s hands, they must also get up and do the work to make things better in their lives, as faith without works is dead. “Just know that everything will be all right. This is my umpteenth year of leaving troubles in God’s hands, and while life isn’t perfect, I am extremely blessed and thankful to live this life,” said Trevor.

You can find it embroidered on pillows, printed on T-shirts and sometimes even framed to hang on the wall of a Christian home. Tribune Religion asked a number of our readers what this particular saying means to them and how it applies to their lives. “It was earlier this year I think I made the change to leave it all in God’s hands. You know what, let me not say think, I am absolutely sure I made the change to do it because my life has transformed into the better,” said Jessica Moore. “I am not perfect, but I used to be the type of person that wanted to be in the driver’s seat in every situation and for problem in my life and the lives of those I care about. This brought nothing but
heartache and stress to me. When I started expressing myself more to others that cared about me, the number one tip I got was to let go and let God.” It wasn’t an easy lesson for Jessica to learn, but one she did eventually teach herself. “Of course, this wasn’t the first time I have been told to do this, because everyone hears it at least once it their lives. But this time around I actually applied it to my life. Letting go of things I cannot control was like a weight lifted off my shoulders. I feel so much better, so much lighter now that I am allowing God full control of my driver’s seat. There is no decision I make without consulting Him first,” she said. HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS MARK HANUKKAH AT JERUSALEM WESTERN WALL JERUSALEM (AP) — Several dozen Holocaust survivors marked the third night of Hanukkah on Tuesday with a menorah-lighting ceremony at Jerusalem's Western Wall that paid tribute to them and the 6 million Jews killed by the Nazis. The candle-lighting was organized by the Jewish Claims Conference at the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City, the holiest
place where Jews can pray. It was accompanied by an online event featuring a statement by Jewish, Israeli and German leaders. German chancellor-designate Olaf Scholz said in a video statement in German that his country “will continue to do everything we can to protect Jewish citizens in the future and to counter all antisemitism. We will fight darkness with light.”
“Today, Jewish life is once again enriching our society. Israel and Germany are close partners. We must not put these precious gifts at risk,” he said. Israel was established in 1948 in the wake of the Holocaust as a refuge for Jews from around the world and is home to an aging population of around 175,000 survivors.
