For Christians, Jesus is truly the reason for the season, and one of the truly magical parts of the holidays is all the traditional Christmas music that is played only at this time of year.
Tribune Religion reader Chloe said, “I’m Catholic, and while I enjoy all the hymns sung in church, my favourite time of the year for hymns is the Christmas season. From O Come, All Ye Faithful, Angels We Have Heard on High and can’t forget Joy To The World .. I be jamming in there, tambourine and all.
“It is just something about the season of holiday cheer. I wish the feeling that everyone gets around this time of year was all year around. My family and I all look forward to open ing gifts, enjoying each other and getting ready for church on Christmas Day.”
The popular carol Silent Night (composed by pri mary school teacher Franz
Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Catholic priest Joseph Mohr in Austria in 1818), holds special meaning for Sean because it reminds him of his late mother.
“My mother loved Silent Night because it reminded her of my sister and when ever she heard it in church, if my sister wasn’t there she would always smile and I knew she was thinking of her, so now whenever I hear Silent Night I remember my mom’s smile,” he said.
The song Away in a Manger, first published in the late 19th century, is the song that Renee loves most at Christmas.
“The words are just so sweet about the little baby
Jesus sleeping. I love it and I loved that my mom sang it with me, and now I can’t wait to sing it as a lullaby for my baby this Christ mas,” she said.
Monique said one of the highlights of their family Christmas dinners is their group of family and friends singing of Beautiful Star of Bethlehem, by American hymn writer Adger M Pace (1882 -1959).
“My family always ends up singing that at the top of our voices after Christ mas dinner and it is always so fun, because my family collectively cannot hold a tune, but we love it and it’s one of those Christmas
memories that will stay with me forever,” she said.
Rachel said “hands down my favourite Christmas hymn is “O Holy Night.”
The song, whose original title is "Cantique de Noël”, is a based on a Frenchlanguage poem by Placide Cappeau, written in 1843. The English version (with small changes to the initial melody) is by John Sullivan Dwight. The carol reflects on the birth of Jesus as humanity's redemption.
“The words are so poign ant and when you sing it in a candle-lit church at Christmas Eve mid night mass. That ‘Oh night divine’ makes me cry every single time,” said Rachel.
(THE CONVERSATION)
– Mary, the mother of Jesus, is unquestionably the senior saint within the Christian tradition. Yet we know remarkably little about her. In the New Testa ment, there is nothing about her birth, death, appearance or age.
Outside of the accounts of the birth of Jesus that only occur in the gospels of Matthew and Luke, she is specifically men tioned at only three other events in the life of her son.
She is present at a wedding where Jesus turns water into wine; she makes an attempt to see her son while he is teaching; and she is there at his crucifixion. Indeed, Mary is mentioned more often in the Qur'an than in the New Testament.
Here, then, are five things we do know about her.
1. She was an accidental virgin
The gospel of Matthew is the only one to tell us Mary was pregnant before she and Joseph had sex. She was said to be “with child from the Holy Spirit”. In proof of this, Matthew quoted a prophecy from the Old Testa ment that a “virgin will conceive and bear a son and he will be called Emmanuel”.
Matthew was using the Greek version of the Old Testament. In the Greek Old Testament, the original Hebrew word “almah” had been translated as “parthe nos”, thence into the Latin Bible as “virgo” and into English as “virgin”.
Whereas “almah” means only “young woman”, the Greek word “parthenos” means physi cally “a virgin intacta”. In short, Mary was said to be a virgin because of an accident of trans lation when “young woman” became “virgin”.
2. She was a perpetual virgin
Within early Christian doc trine, Mary remained a virgin during and after the birth of
Jesus. This was perhaps only fitting for someone deemed “the mother of God” or “God-bearer”.
Saint Ambrose of Milan (c.339-97 CE) enthusiastically defended the doctrine of the per petual virginity of Mary:
Blessed Mary is the gate, whereof it is written that the Lord hath entered in by it, there fore it shall be shut after birth; for as a virgin she both conceived and brought forth.
The Lateran Council of 649 CE, a council held in Rome by the Western Church, later declared it an article of faith that Jesus was conceived “without seed” and that Mary “incorrupt ibly bore [him], her virginity remaining indestructible even after his birth” . All this in spite of the Gospels’ declaration that Jesus had brothers and sisters (Mark 3.32, Matthew 12.46, Luke 8.19).
3. She was immaculately conceived
Within Western theology, it was generally recognised from the time of Saint Ambrose that Mary never committed a sin. But was her sinlessness in this life because she was born with out “original sin”? After all, according to Western theology, every human being was born with original sin, the “genetic”
consequence of the sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
The growing cult of devotion to the Virgin Mary in the medi eval period led to fine-grained theological divisions on the issue. On the one hand, devotion to Mary led to the argument that God had ensured Mary did not have “original sin”.
But then, if Mary had been conceived without sin, she had already been redeemed before the redemption brought about by the death and resurrection of Jesus her son.
The Catholic Church only resolved the issue in 1854. Pope Pius IX declared that the doc trine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her conception… was preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and con stantly by all the faithful.
The early centuries of the Christian tradition were silent on the death of Mary. But by the seventh and eighth centuries, the belief in the bodily ascension of Mary into heaven, had taken a firm hold in both the Western and Eastern Churches.
The Eastern Orthodox Greek Church held to the dormition of Mary. According to this, Mary
had a natural death, and her soul was then received by Christ. Her body arose on the third day after her death. She was then taken up bodily into heaven.
For a long time, the Catho lic Church was ambiguous on whether Mary rose from the dead after a brief period of repose in death and then ascended into heaven or was “assumed” bodily into heaven before she died.
Belief in the ascension of Mary into heaven became Catholic doctrine in 1950. Pope Pius XII then declared that Mary was not subject to the law of remaining in the corruption of the grave, and she did not have to wait until the end of time for the redemption of her body.
5. She is a sky goddess
The consequence of the bodily ascension of Mary was the absence of any bodily relics. Although there was breast milk, tears, hair and nail clippings, her relics were mostly “second
order” – garments, rings, veils and shoes.
In the absence of her skeletal remains, her devotees made do with visions – at Lourdes, Gua dalupe, Fatima, Medjugorje, and so on. Like the other saints, her pilgrimage sites were places where she could be invoked to ask God to grant the prayers of her devotees.
But she was more than just a saint. In popular devotion she was a sky goddess always dressed in blue. She was the goddess of the moon and the star of the sea (stella maris).
She was related to the star sign Virgo (not surprisingly) – the Queen of Heaven and Queen of the angels.

THE mother of a Swiss Guard member accused of commit ting one of the most sensational crimes in recent Vatican his tory – fatally shooting his commander and the senior officer's wife before killing him self – is turning to the United Nations and Pope Francis in hopes of getting some closure nearly a quarter-century after the slayings.
Muguette Baudat was on hand Tuesday as her lawyer, Laura Sgro, a veteran defense attorney in Vatican criminal trials, detailed her efforts to pry information out of the Vatican and access the court file into the May 4, 1998 slayings that are recounted in Sgro's new book, “Blood in the Vatican.”
“I’ve been waiting for more than 24 years, so I don’t expect anything,” Baudat said at a book launch event. But she added: “The book is very important.”
Within hours of the slay ings, the Vatican spokesman announced that Baudat's 23-year-old son, Cedric Tornay, a noncommissioned Swiss Guard officer, had killed Colo nel Alois Estermann and Estermann’s Venezuelan-born wife, Gladys Meza Romero, with his service revolver and then turned the gun on himself. The spokesman said a buildup of resentment over a reprimand by Estermann and the denial of a decoration, combined with a ″peculiar″ psychology, led to Tor nay's violent acts.
Nine months later, in Febru ary 1999, the Vatican released a 10-page summary of its internal investigation that confirmed its initial assessment. It concluded that Tornay was solely respon sible for the murder-suicide but added that his marijuana use and a brain cyst the size of a pigeon’s egg could have impaired his reasoning.
Baudat spent two decades campaigning for more infor mation and hired Sgro in 2019, asking for the Vatican investi gation to be reopened. She said
MUGUETTE BAUDATher request was not spurred by a belief that the Vatican was responsible, but rather to end the secrecy with which it has always handled the case.
Last year, the Vatican sec retary of state intervened personally in the case and asked the Vatican tribunal to pay “par ticular attention” to Baudat’s request. Sgro was granted access to the court file.
In the book, Sgro details what she found in the file, as well as the conditions imposed on her by the Vatican prosecutor for viewing it: She wasn’t allowed to make copies but could only view the documentation in the tribunal, with two gendarmes standing behind her back moni toring her at all times. She was allowed to take some notes but not too many since she was explicitly barred from copy ing the text. She had to submit her notes to the prosecutors' office after each viewing ses sion, which took place over the course of a year.
And what she discovered in reading the court file, she said Tuesday, “confirmed all the doubts that the mother had about an investigation conducted in an absolutely superficial way.”
Sgro noted that at least 20 people were allowed access to
the crime scene in the moments after the slayings, including chaplains, monsignors and the Vatican spokesman, none of whom wore protective gear. No fingerprints or blood samples were taken, and no DNA tests performed.
A handwriting analysis of a letter, purportedly from Tornay to his mother and foreshadow ing the killings, was done on a photocopy, not the original document. The corpses were moved around the Estermann apartment, as was furniture, according to 38 photographs taken by a Vatican newspaper photographer that were in the court file. Autopsies were per formed not in a hospital morgue but in the crypt of a chapel inside the Vatican walls.
“After one hour, Cedric was given up as the guilty one and the investigation was built around this, and this is abso lutely the most alarming thing,” Sgro said.
The lawyer alleged that the conditions in which she was forced to work to view the file, as well as the mother's long fight to find information about her son, constituted human rights violations that should be taken up by the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva.
There was no indication Tues day whether the U.N. might take up her case, since such complaints must show a consist ent pattern of “gross violations” of human rights, such as the policy of apartheid in South Africa.
Sgro said she had little other recourse since the Holy See is not a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights, and therefore not a party to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, where such appeals would normally be heard. The Holy See enjoys observer status at the U.N. and
has received criticism from U.N. human rights experts over the clergy sexual abuse scandal.
Sgro said she sent a copy of “Blood in the Vatican” to Pope Francis and he responded with a personal letter. His response, she said, gave her hope that the Vatican might be ready to acknowledge that its origi nal investigation was flawed and that Tornay's legacy might somehow be rehabilitated even if he is confirmed as the killer.
“It’s a small drop after 24 years of silence,” Sgro said. “Let us hope this drop becomes a glass of water, then a lake.”

– Before me as I write lies a book – or should I call it a relic? Augustine’s Confessions in the Oxford paperback edition, translated by Henry Chadwick.
There are layers of different notes in the margins – black ink next to blue ink next to pencil, marking my changing thoughts over more than 20 years.
There are also notes about things completely unrelated to the thoughts of a man from the 4th century CE: old phone numbers and email addresses squished in when I couldn’t find another spot; notes about meet ings that happened in another country and in another decade. We have certainly left our mark on each other, this book and I. Pages 1-132 have come out of their binding, making the edge as rough as the personal histories the volume tracks –both Augustine’s and my own. The book itself, as it gets older, acquires layers, holds more.
Augustine’s Confessions is a book about making meaning out of life, about looking back in order to find the right story. We do this as we get older – Augus tine was in his late 40s when he wrote this retrospective about how he came to be who he was: a Christian bishop in North Africa in the late fourth century CE.
There are 13 books in his Confessions; nine are biographi cal narrative, and the final four are a meditative analysis of Augustine’s state of mind and soul at his time of writing. Dif ferent books in Confessions have spoken to me at different times of my life, a sure sign of the richness of this ancient text. I’m going to talk about three of these moments, stretched over more than 20 years.
‘I felt like I was home’
I was 16 the first time I read Augustine’s opening paragraphs.
“You are great, Lord, and highly to be praised … grant me, Lord to know and under stand which comes first – to call upon you or to praise you, and whether knowing you preceded calling upon you. But who calls upon you when he does not know you?”
My earliest layer of marginal notes say, “Why start with ques tions? He’s doing it because he’s human.”
Reading those first para graphs of his questioning God, I felt like I recognised an author for the first time. I felt suddenly like I was home.
The Confessions begins with wonder and curiosity. It is full of questions. Augustine was the perfect writer for an earnest high schooler trying to figure out who she was and how she fit into the world. Especially Book 1, which focuses on Augustine’s own childhood and youth.
Augustine the writer Augustine is one of the most important writers of early Chris tianity. Born in a small town in North Africa in 354 CE, he was a successful member of Roman society. By the time he was 30, he had reached the highest pin nacle of his professional life as a successful rhetorician in Milan.
But then something hap pened. He decided to return to the religion of his childhood and become a baptised Chris tian. And not only a baptised and practising Christian, but a monk.
Later he rose to be Bishop of Hippo, a medium-sized city in modern day Algeria. He died aged 76 while Hippo was under siege by the Vandals.
How do we know all these things? Because Augustine tells us himself.
Augustine wrote over five mil lion words, or, more precisely,
dictated them to professional scribes. These words are parts of all sorts of texts: doctrinal works on free will and providence, commentaries on books of the bible, debates with opponents, letters to all sorts of people.
Augustine set the agenda for Christian theology and was a profound influence on the devel opment of human thought in the West. Yet, of all of these words, his Confessions has become the modern classic because it feels so immediate and famil iar to our current desire for self-understanding.
The Confessions is written as a meditation on Augustine’s life, up to and including his baptism at the age of 31. He wrote his recollections about ten years later, with a bit of distance and ability to reflect.
The work is directly addressed to God as a prayer of thanksgiv ing for his guidance through all the twists and turns of Augus tine’s life. It’s interlaced with constant scriptural quotation and questions.
As an undergraduate, I was assigned Confessions to read four times: thrice in English and once in Latin. Apparently, the University of Chicago, where I was studying, had something of an Augustine craze in the early 2000’s. By this time, my favour ite book had moved on from Book 1 to Book 4: the tragic one where Augustine’s best friend from home dies after Augustine returns from his higher studies in the big city of Carthage.
Like most people, Augustine included, I cared a lot about friendship at university. Augus tine’s honest analysis of his love for his friend yet his retro spective awareness, too, of his own blindness and pomposity towards him, challenged me to think about what it meant to be a true friend.
Soon after, I tried to give away my beloved copy of the

Confessions to a close friend. The remnants of this attempt remain in the book I am hold ing. I have written inside the front cover:
“To –, dimidio animae suae (IV.vi), to be read yearly (or nearly so) until disintegration, with the strict requirement to add copious notes on each sub sequent reading.”
I interpreted our friendship with the words Augustine uses of his young friend: dimidio animae suae, “half my soul”.
I didn’t realise that I was about to lose my friend too. In the back cover of my book I’ve transcribed a bit of a letter my friend wrote in response to my present:
… I felt like I was holding your blood …
He gave the book back to me, because he said he couldn’t keep my blood. We didn’t see each other again for a decade.
I’m still thinking about Augustine’s Confessions. I’ve just finished writing a book about female philosophers in the early Christian tradition. One of them was Augustine’s mother, Monica.
For this project, I spent a lot of time rereading Book 9 of Confessions, the “Monica book”. In this book, Monica
dies, and Augustine tells us about her. Monica seemed like a typical North African wife and mother – taking care of her chil dren, managing her husband. But Augustine knew better. He saw that his mother was a phi losopher and wanted to tell the world.
Augustine gives his mother a mini-Confessions of her own,
mapping her changing character from youth to death. And at the key moment of Augustine’s own mystical vision – the famous Vision at Ostia – Monica is by his side.
Together they reach out for eternal wisdom. Augustine describes how they are “rav ished” by it. Mother and son become feminised lovers of
FEWER than half the people in England and Wales consider themselves Christian, according to the most recent census — the first time a minority of the popu lation has followed the country's official religion.
Britain has become less reli gious — and less white — in the decade since the last census, figures from the 2021 census
released Tuesday by the Office for National Statistics revealed.
Some 46.2 percent of the population of England and Wales described themselves as Christian on the day of the 2021 census, down from 59.3 percent a decade earlier. The Muslim population grew from 4.9 per cent to 6.5 percent of the total, while 1.7 percent identified as Hindu, up from 1.5 percent.
More than 1 in 3 people — 37 percent — said they had no
religion, up from 25 percent in 2011.
The other parts of the UK, Scotland and Northern Ire land, report their census results separately.
Secularism campaigners said the shift should trigger a rethink of the way religion is entrenched in British society. The UK has state-funded Church of England schools, Anglican bishops sit in Parliament’s upper chamber, and the monarch is “defender
truth. Monica has led Augustine to his new, more receptive and passive state.
I’m freshly interested in mothers – being the mother of two small children myself. I’m interested in how they can also be philosophers, can still live a life in touch with higher reali ties, when also wrapped up in so many mundane responsibilities.
But Monica doesn’t write her own story, so we are left wondering what the real Con fessions of Monica might have been like.
We change each other Augustine spends the next book questioning why he chose to expose his private contem plation to the whole world. His rationale is that he knows no life is truly private. His private writ ing is deeply social.
Augusine’s influence has reached far beyond his original audience in the fourth century, around the world and across the centuries, into my office in 21st century Australia.
In Augustine’s Confessions, I stumbled across the ideal book to accompany me through life, not as a perfect model for imi tation, but as a companion, a challenge, an agent of reflection and change.
Books might be sacred objects, but they are sacred objects we should interact with, inscribe ourselves into. When we change them, we let them change us.

of the faith” and supreme gover nor of the church.
Andrew Copson, chief execu tive of the charity Humanists UK, said “the dramatic growth of the non-religious” had made the UK “almost certainly one of the least religious countries on Earth.”
“One of the most striking things about these results is how at odds the population is from the state itself,” he said. “No state in Europe has such a reli gious set-up as we do in terms of law and public policy, while at the same time having such a non-religious population.”
Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell, one of the most senior clerics in the Church of Eng land, said the data was “not a
great surprise,” but was a chal lenge to Christians to work harder to promote their faith.
“We have left behind the era when many people almost auto matically identified as Christian, but other surveys consistently show how the same people still seek spiritual truth and wisdom and a set of values to live by,” he said.
Almost 82 percent of people in England and Wales identi fied as white in the census, down from 86 percent in 2011. Some 9 percent said they were Asian, 4 percent Black and 3 percent from “mixed or multiple” ethnic backgrounds, while 2 percent identified with another ethnic group.
MEMBERS of the Church of God of Prophesy Love Centre are excited to host their Winter productions scheduled for this Friday, December 2, and again on Friday, December 11.
“In a world (inundated) by dilemmas, confusions and some delusions, there is still a sense of hope and faith that can bring peace to diffuse the world ills,” said Samita Ferguson, Church of God of Prophesy member.
She said this Friday people can look forward to a group children and young adults who will showcase their tal ents during two short plays, “Saviour” and “Good News”, beginning at 7pm.
The production is set to take place at the Church of God of Prophecy Love Centre, located on Ernest and York Streets.
Samita, who is the playwright of the show, said the aim is to remind people that no matter what they are going through, if they hold on to their faith and hope, miracles are will happen if only they believe.
“Additionally, during the showings one will witness youths in action as they share their per spectives on issues of today and the importance of taking on the challenge to spread the good news that Jesus can fix any situ ation that one may encounter throughout their life. The jour ney with the children will be filled with lots of excitement, songs and storytelling as they travel back in time and reflect on a modern twist om the story of the famous nursery rhyme
‘The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe’,” said Samita.
She said the evening will also feature guest performances by Letitia Bullard out of Freeport, Grand Bahama, the St Barnabas Dance Team, and the Church of God of Prophecy’s Junior Band.
