The essence of the Bahamas on display in Mexico City Junkanoo:

Esencia Bahameña Exhibition Opens at Galerías Abiertas in Mexico City

I

n collaboration with the Mexico City Culture Ministry, Baha Mar introduces Junkanoo: Esencia Bahameña – an unprecedented photo exhibition located along Reforma Avenue, one of the most high-profile boulevards and the heartbeat of Mexico City. The extraordinary exhibition, which officially opened to the public on November 14, is a specific chapter of the Fairwind exhibition, Baha Mar’s permanent installation of Bahamian art on display at the resort destination. Junkanoo: Esencia Bahameña was curated by The Current at Baha Mar, and showcases photography by Bahamian artists, depicting the art, culture and traditions of Junkanoo throughout the Bahamas.

Junkanoo: Esencia Bahameña was introduced to Mexico City in partnership with Galerías Abiertas, a programme created by the Mexico City Culture Ministry to expand the presence of Mexican and foreign art and culture throughout open spaces, strengthen bonds between nations and spotlight new and emerging artists. The exhibition consists of more than 30 photographs on display along Reforma Avenue, between the Diana Cazadora Roundabout and the Estela de Luz monument. Joy Jibrilu, Director

General of the Ministry of Tourism, was in attendance for the opening of the exhibition, which features artists including Erik Kruthoff, Roland Rose, Nick Klonaris and Delton Barrett.

“At Baha Mar, we believe that tourism goes beyond offering recreational and resting spaces to resort guests.

Tourism is about culture – bringing visitors closer to local and authentic experiences that allow them to interact with specific histories and traditions of the islands,” said Graeme Davis, president of Baha Mar. “This is why we have established art as one of Baha Mar’s main pillars, to share the value of Bahamian art with our guests, and now with Mexico City through this initiative, which focuses on one of the

most representative moments in Bahamian life: Junkanoo.”

Junkanoo: Esencia Bahameña brings the parade to life through the eyes and lenses of Bahamian artists. The exhibition depicts the colourful energy of Junkanoo, along with behind-thescenes snapshots of practices and rehearsals at the homes of performers before the big rush. The exhibition narrates the evolution of Junkanoo by juxtaposing photographs from the 1960s against those of contemporary Junkanoo, allowing viewers to journey through the transformation and witness the everlasting and captivating essence of the parade.

The curation of the photographic exhibit was conceptualised and executed under the leadership of Baha Mar Director of Arts John Cox. The Current serves as a hub for the uninterrupted flow of art, and features exhibitions, drawing and painting classes, conferences, workshops, classical music concerts, art tours, and artists-in-residence programmes.

Junkanoo, Esencia Bahameña is part of the Fairwind exhibition, permanently exhibited at Baha Mar, which narrates, through art, more than 150 years of Bahamian history and can be visited at the Baha Mar Convention Centre, free of charge at any time.

interview He once made history as a Bahamian filmmaker, but today he is looking to conquer the local liquor market, and going to head to head with leading names with his own potent brand of vodka.

hen the curtain went down on his film career, Nathaniel Prince Lewis raised a glass to a new venture: creating a uniquely Bahamian brand of liquor.

The Grand Bahama native has had an impressive film resumé, including being a producer on award-winning films like “Politicking in Paradise” and “Jessica’s Wish”, and making history in 2013 when he became only one of five Bahamians to show a film internationally when his movie “Frapper Avec Amour” screened at the 28th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival in Florida.

However, he eventually realised that he needed a change in direction to make a living.

“I had been a filmmaker, but in 2014 realised that it was not as sustainable as I would have liked, so I decided to do an extension of my Prince Lewis brand,” he explained.

In 2014, he also launched a designer fragrance called Hope.

“Similar to how film studios and celebrities in the US have a wide range of branded merchandise under their banner, our company does the same thing. Think of it like Procter & Gamble, but as opposed to consumer goods for the home, we produce for the luxury market,” he said.

“I noticed that all films have after parties where people would enjoy a glass of wine. I love wine; it’s such a classy and expressive beverage and fits perfectly with the Prince Lewis brand.

It brings business people together, couples together, communities together, and really complements any occasion.

“When it came time for distribution I treated it like it was election season and I was campaigning. I would go door to door and call everyone I could think of, asking for a meeting.

It was really just a lot of old-fashioned marketing and advertising, taking the product around for people to try and hoping that I would get calls back for orders,” he said.

Nathaniel’s persistence paid off and he eventually made a name for himself.

“Today, my products are sold in almost 100 stores and restaurants in the country, both in New Providence and in Grand Bahama.”

In the vodka business, Nathaniel said, he is determined to go head to head with major players such as Stolichnaya and Absolut.

“One of things that sets my vodka apart from the rest is that most vodkas have a 40 percent alcohol content, but my vodka has an alcohol content of 44 percent. My vodka is also gluten free as well.”

Nathaniel said that he is thrilled that Bahamians have taken to his brand.

With this in mind, Nathaniel, a selfproclaimed wine connoisseur, launched a brand of wine he called Nathanyel Wines The first bottle of the line was the Gran Bajamar, a 2012 Pinot Noir made with California grapes and customcrushed for the new label. It’s name is a tribute to his native Grand Bahama.

Last year, he decided to expand his brand to include a line of vodka called the Prince Lewis Bahamian Style Classic Vodka.

“I wanted to expand and vodka is a faster mover. I remember being out with some friends and everyone was drinking vodka and cran, and they drank so much that everyone started getting sick from the vodka and getting headaches, and I thought that there has to be a better way to do this,” he said.

So just how does a former filmmaker create a successful beverage company when he has had no prior experience in making or distributing alcohol?

It was simple, he told Tribune Weekend: “I am a graduate from the ‘University of Google’. I literally did all of my research on how to produce

“I am surprised,” he noted, “but I have to say it’s not that I am surprised that it was well received, but by who it was received by. There were people in my mind who I thought, ‘OK, yes ,they will carry it and be on board. And then there were people who I was like, ‘OK, I’ll approach them, but I am not sure about them.’ But it turned out to be the reverse of what I thought. I am very grateful for everyone who has been so amazing to me and who are now repeat customers.”

He said that by the hardest part of the process has been the financing and the taxes involved in setting up the business.

“That was a huge bump in the road, considering the taxes on spirits,” he explained.

He now hopes he can take advantage of Freeport having a tax-free zone, which would enable him to lower operating costs and produce the product on the island.

Just recently he was able to partner with the British Colonial Hilton who will include him in the reception they will be hosting next Wednesday for their new brand partners.

Looking towards the future, Nathaniel said that he would like to add to his brand’s line and is considering producing cognac or rum, tequila and whiskey.

The Little Pink Party

turns 10 T he Bahamas most adored expo-styled shopping event is back and is observing a milestone birthday this Saturday. The Little Pink Party is turning 10, and is celebrating in style at the Grand Hyatt, Baha Mar. For five hours, starting at 3pm in the New Providence Ballroom, party-goers will be able to enjoy more than 40 exhibiting brands and small businesses, sip on cocktails and mocktails, sample products, services, plus confections, snacks and savoury bites. Guests can also snap selfies and group shots in styled spaces created for social media posts, sharing their experiences with friends and followers.

“It’s not the magic that makes it work, it’s the way we work that makes it magic.” This quote by former Executive Vice President of Operations at the Walt Disney Resort Lee Cockerell has become the mantra for the team of superwomen who have produced

the event year after year for the past decade.

The magic, said organisers, is in the way that the carefully curated exhibits and boutique spaces encourage shoppers to move from one part of the event space to another. It’s commonplace to see women getting a health screening with Bay Street Medical one moment, then a makeover by brands like Maybelline or Neutrogena, and then purchasing on-trend fashions and accessories. Throughout the day, the stage show will keep the party going with fitness demonstrations, performances and games.

The Little Pink Party was created by Kandice Hanna Creative. It’s founders, sisters Krista Nairnand and Kandice Cargill, first introduced the shopping expo to Bahamian women in 2008. Since then, with the support of an ever growing list of sponsors, exhibitors and attendees, the event has

evolved into what some describe as the Bahamas’ premier shopping party.

Each year, hundreds of guests line up in anticipation as the doors open.

They snag coveted cosmetic bags filled with samples of locally represented consumer brands. The atmosphere is one of productivity and positivity.

“For us, it’s more than a shopping party. We provide smaller brands an opportunity to market to their target demographic at a fraction of the cost of traditional marketing,” said Bodine Johnson, director of entertainment.

“Many of our boutique exhibitors are upstart brands and businesses hoping to find their niche market. Selling products can be difficult; moreso, getting people into a brick and mortar store can be a challenge. The Little

Pink Party introduces the brand to the buyer. Bargain buyers score more with discounted prices from the vendors snagging savings at every turn.”

The Little Pink Party also does its bit for charity. Part proceeds from the entry fees have always benefitted the Cancer Society of the Bahamas in an effort to support the fight against breast cancer.

“Our main stage is also used as a platform to discuss cancer detection and prevention, while celebrating the accomplishments of the survivors,” said the organisers.

Tickets for the event are $15 and can be purchased at Bay Street Medical, Happy Hair Boutique, Bliss Wax Boutique, Amani Hair, and House of Hanna.

Fierce foursome explore the meaning of self, womanhood

HE Island House’s meeting room was transformed into an art gallery last Thursday evening to host Nassau’s latest, female artists only,

exhibition The group exhibition is called “FOUR” and features works by contemporary Bahamian artists Gabrielle Banks, June Collie, Jodi Minnis and Angelika Wallace-Whitfield.

Ranging from charcoal drawings to oil paintings, the exhibition highlights the investigation of self and womanhood. The opening was musically accompanied by the Island House’s The Jazz Cats.

In an interview with Tribune Weekend, Jodi Minnis, who is also the curator of the exhibition, spoke about the collaborative effort, stating that she and Angelika are good friends with a great working relationship.

Having exhibited with both Angelika

and June in the past, reaching out to them for this occasion seemed like a natural choice to her.

“I recently connected with Gabrielle Banks on social media after viewing her solo exhibition at the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas in 2017.

Upon seeing her work I connected her aesthetically to June. Even though it’s not good practice to curate an exhibition that you are exhibiting in, I find it necessary to create opportunities for myself and my colleagues. I’m more than grateful to them for trusting me with this mash-up,” said Jodi.

“We (decided) on the title ‘FOUR’ simply because there are four of us exhibiting. The exhibition contains artworks from four different perspectives, aesthetics and histories, on overlapping themes within our works.”

There are close to 40 pieces on display, ranging in size from 12x16 to 66 x48 inch, and most of the artworks exhibited are either oil on canvas, acrylic on canvas or charcoal on paper.

painted women inspired by photographs found on the internet and everyday women she encountered.

A piece entitled “Roommates” features three seated women in a triangular arrangement – two giving three-quarter views of their faces, looking to the left and right respectively, and one looking downward. None of the women featured directly meets the gaze of the viewer.

Emerging from a green, largepatterned background, the women appear in pyjama-like clothing, and their overlapping positions suggest intimacy between them.

Meanwhile, a mixed media portrait by Angelika WallaceWhitfield was created with layered acrylic paint, graphite, charcoal and spray paint to push and pull the viewers through the multi-subject composition. The main subject – a chest covered by a metal fence with a string of bobbed wire diagonally breaking up the composition – stares solemnly, meeting the viewer’s gaze. However, the gaze is slightly obscured by an aloe plant situated on top of a Bahamian one cent piece. At the bottom of the piece, there is spray-painted the word ‘HOPE’, which is also title of the artwork.

Gabrielle Banks’ “Skye” is a portrait of a friend. In this piece she layers saturated colours of oil paint with brushstrokes exposed to lead the audience around the face of the subject. Cropped at the shoulders, the portrait’s vibrancy contrasts with the resting poise of the face that sits on a fitted background. The background is comprised of large yellow dots with smaller pink dots in the middle, seemingly referencing Amos Ferguson’s “Flowers in a Conch Shell Vase”.

One of Jodi Minnis’ main pieces in this exhibit is called “Closure”; it also a portrait, but a self-portrait, of herself lying down with a banana tree.

“The profile view of the face, rendered in charcoal on bare canvas, looks up at a faded strip of green paint with the drips pouring into it. The majority of the other artworks within the exhibition follow the same pattern of self-portraits, portraits of women, and women juxtaposed to objects,” she explained.

Jodi said she hopes there will be another “FOUR” exhibition in the future.

Karin says: “Our first example of an actor who is completely committed to their movie.

While she invokes the spirit of famed swimmer Esther Williams with her ‘swim cap’, I’m not 100 percent sold on the concept. The dress itself has no shape and looks like some last-minute tailoring.

Otherwise, the colour scheme looks nice on her.”

Cara says: “This is a complete costume and would look ridiculous at any event other than this one. I like it; the swim cap is a cute addition and the print of the fabric is really lovely, as is that gorgeous green colour. I get mermaid vibes looking at her.”

Ezra Miller ”Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” Karin says: “Well, you have to give it to him; he sure is committed to the Harry Potter universe, seeing as he’s dressed up as the boy wizard’s beloved pet owl, Hedwig.

And you know, what? I like it. It’s fun and something different than the usual boring tuxedo.”

Cara says: “Karin, yes, he is channelling Hedwig! I don’t feel any kind of way about it.

It’s borderline ridiculous and theatrical, which I’m sure was his intent, and so I just see it in that light.”

Karin says: “This might have been ‘punk’ 20 years ago.

Now, it’s just boring. The combat boots paired with a girly chiffon skirt...we’ve seen it all before. And the unrelenting black, even down to her hair, is a bit depressing.

And she looks like she’s not feeling it either.”

Cara says: “This whole look is just a bit uninspiring, isn’t it? I mean, even her necklaces are a bit dull. I think she could have put a bit more effort into the look rather than giving us this mess.”

Karin says: “I love this dress from the bottom up to the waist. The fringed-skirt really works here and the pattern of the ‘main’ dress is really nice and elegant. But there is just something about the shoulders and sleeves that don’t work.

Maybe it comes up too high?

Whatever it is, it makes it look weirdly conservative.”

Cara says: “I love all the bead work and the fringe, although I agree with Karin that perhaps a different sleeve length or maybe losing the sleeves altogether may have been more stylish. But it’s not enough of a problem for me not to like the dress.”

Bahamian war hero

n “The Black Prince of Grant’s Town”, author Felicity L Johnson not only pays homage to her father, Bahamian war hero Basil L I Johnson, but also offers readers a walkthrough of the nation’s history.

The biography of her father spans 80 plus years of significant change, giving insight into important events such as unionism and the 1958 General Strike, the Bahamas’ involvement in World War II and the treatment of its veterans by the government of the day, and the Electricity Department.

Basil Johnson, CBE, DFM (1920 – 2004), emerged as a national hero when, in 1941, he travelled to England to represent the then colony in World War II in the Royal Air Force.

He became a flight engineer with 156 Squadron in the elite Pathfinder Force of Bomber Command, and survived 45 missions flown over enemy territory before returning home to his beloved Bahamas.

As president of the Bahamas branch of the Royal British Legion for 57 years, Mr Johnson became fondly known as “The Poppy Man”, as he

visited schools and businesses around Remembrance Day distributing poppies and explaining their significance.

Mr Johnson was a son of Hay Street, Grant’s Town, like his childhood neighbour, former Governor General Sir Orville Turnquest, who writes of the pride the Hay Street families experienced in their “Over-the-Hill” boys’ adventures in the war.

Patricia Glinton-Meicholas, renowned Bahamian author, said of this new biography: “ ‘The Black Prince of Grant’s Town’ is an important book…Felicity Johnson has given the crown to her father in her evocation of his life, which shows he earned the title in a life of breaking barriers and rising.”

Dr Marjorie Brooks-Jones, former Dean of the Faculty of Liberal and Fine Arts at the College of he Bahamas, refers to Basil Johnson’s “remarkable life….in this compelling biography.”

She noted: “The text skillfully positions the enthralling personal story of an individual life within the unfolding matrix of momentous historical change.” She said the book

‘Big Little Lies’ author serves up laughs, thrills, surprises in new novel Life is good for Liane Moriarty. The “Big Little Lies” novelist who partnered with actress Nicole Kidman to turn that book into a hit HBO series, sold the rights to her new novel, “Nine Perfect Strangers,” to her Australian friend before the rest of us could even read it.

So let’s help them out and do some casting. Kidman, with a little

extra padding and lots of red lipstick, can star as Frances Welty, the romance novelist with a broken heart who is the emotional center of “Nine Perfect Strangers.” Eight more actors with name recognition will join the project once she’s officially onboard.

Author Felicity L Johnson “constitutes a significant contribution to Bahamian biography, history and historiography and will be of interest to Bahamians including the youth….and to scholars of colonial and post-colonial histories and social and cultural studies, and to aspiring writers of memoir.”

It’s a quick read, populated by the title characters who sign up for a retreat at Tranquillum House, a resort in Sydney that promises personal transformation in just 10 days.

The first half of the 450-page novel is a little slow, but once the nine guests complete their five-day “noble silence,” the pace accelerates and the story moves from a series of character perspectives (each chapter title is a character’s name) to a light-hearted thriller. As soon as the strangers can talk, they find themselves with a lot to talk about.

Does Masha really have their best interests at heart? And most important, what the heck is happening to them

during the retreat’s final “emotionalrelease exercise?”

Moriarty manages to keep the tone mostly light, despite creating characters with real issues. From a family unable to come to terms with the suicide of their son and brother to a divorce lawyer with daddy issues, all nine characters are adequately developed and feel genuine by book’s end.

Readers learn much more about each of the nine as the novel speeds toward its climax. You root for them all and get the impression that Moriarty does too, so much so that she has a hard time saying goodbye, writing a series of final chapters updating readers weeks, months and even years later about what happened to them after the events at Tranquillum House. It’s an ending fit for a book destined to be a TV series.

Pan Am founder’s grandson supports Eleuthera’s young athletes

hildren all throughout Eleuthera who participate in sporting activities recently received the treat of a brand new pair of Converse tennis

shoes.

The sneakers were donated by the Converse company through one of Eleuthera’s winter residents, William “Doug” Douglass, who was happy to arrange the pick-up and delivery of the shoes for the children of Eleuthera.

The Urban Renewal office in Eleuthera spearheaded the distribution of the tennis shoes through its officers Bernadette Sweeting and Nicoya Taylor. They

arranged a fun day for the kids where the shoes were handed out and the children were treated to lunch, fun and games. Eleuthera MP Hank Johnson and his wife Shelly were on hand to witness the event, assist in the distribution and encourage the kids in their sporting endeavours.

The event was held at the Wemyss Bight Primary School basketball court, which was built and funded last year by Mr Douglass, who has been coming to Eleuthera since 1962. He is the grandson of Pan Am founder and South Eleuthera resident Juan Trippe, and the court was dedicated to his grandfather as well as his grandmother, Betty.

Mr Douglass remains a big supporter of Chris “Fireman” Brown, who hails from Wemyss Bight. He

believes that if more investments were made into the young people in the Out Island settlements, even more great athletes would come out of them.

He relayed one request from Converse – that the tennis shoes be given to kids who actively participate in sports. Once the event was over, Urban Renewal then combed the entire island for kids who qualified, distributing shoes, which amounted to hundreds of pairs. They visited high school and primary schools, attended sporting events and went into settlements to ensure that as many children received a pair as possible.

Taylor of Urban renewal said kids who participate in mostly basketball, baseball and track and field got their tennis shoes, and were happy to receive them.

ole’s of Nassau and Morley for Men kicked off the holiday season and raised over $30,000 with their annual Fashion Show & Luncheon in aid of the Bahamas Humane Society (BHS).

The event, held on November 20 at the British Colonial Hilton, marked the 40th year that Cole’s of Nassau and Morley for Men have hosted this function, which store owner Diane Cole Morley started back when the late Betty Kenning was heading BHS. The money raised from this year’s event will go towards purchasing animal care supplies and medicine, and conducting much needed repairs to the BHS facility.

The annual fundraiser brings fashion and fun together for a worthy cause and is known for it’s sophisticated atmosphere and stylish apparel. The 250 plus guests were treated to a cocktail hour hosted by the event’s ‘Big Dog’ sponsor Aliv. This year Aliv added an artful touch to the experience with The Celebrity Artist Jamaal Rolle, who created a live painting. Aliv also teamed up with Big Picture Paint & Sip Studio to provide an art booth where guests were able to paint their very own works of art.

LICIA “Puppy” Robinson is making a name for herself within the local entertainment scene as she continuously creates highly anticipated and sold-out events.

From ‘Floatilla’ in summer, to the ‘Movies On the Harbour’ evenings at the Green Parrot Harbourfront Lounge, the ‘Sundance Beach Festival’ in November, and the new ‘Le Dîner en Blanc’, each Pupstar Entertainment event has gone down a storm with the Bahamian public.

Recently, Alicia’s added a new element to her brand: the launch of D’ussé cognac in the Bahamas in collaboration with Bristol Wines and Spirits.

“As you know, annually Pupstar Entertainment hosts a wide variety of events per year, and this was a part of a series of tastings and specialty pairings for brands such as Dewars, Grey Goose, Bacardi and Bombay,” Puppy told Tribune Weekend.

With recent D’usse launches in various cities throughout the United States, Puppy said it felt imperative that the cognac made its way to these shores before the end of the year. Founded in 2012 and co-owned

by Jay Z, D’usse is made at Château de Cognac, one of the oldest cognac houses in France, in a region that has been producing cognac for more than 200 years.

Naturally aged for at least four and a half years in the cellars of Château de Cognac, D’ussé cognacs are said to emerge as a bold, full-bodied blend.

“The younger generation have gravitated a little more towards hip hop and R&B recently, so we thought it would be a great time to introduce the brand and captivate the local audience. We have also partnered with Tristan ‘Triz’ Douglas of the event ‘Lite Vibes Bahamas’ in launching a new series called ‘So Collected’, which is all about R&B, jazz, live performances and an overall cool calm and collected experience. The D’ussé launch complemented the series,” said Puppy.

She said the goal of the evening was mainly to educate the community about the D’ussé brand. The entrepreneur believes most most people gravitate only towards what they already know in regards to wines and spirits, and rarely take the time to try something new.

“Our tastings will hopefully inspire more people to step out of the box and encourage more people to diversify their consumption.

The holidays are quite a busy time with competing events, so there wont be any other D’ussé events, but there are more to come in the new year,” said Puppy.

Winter flowers

O

ur summer heat and humidity is such that only a few annuals can survive, but that makes the summer selection easy. During our cooler months virtually any annual can be grown that thrives in the warmer months of temperate zones. The flowering annual section of a seed catalogue suddenly seems a lot more interesting.

If you are living in the Bahamas but were raised elsewhere you may get sentimental about the plants you can grow in your native area. If you are British, you can grow sweet peas. If you are Texan, you can grow blue bonnets. If you are Canadian, forget about marijuana.

The favourite annuals in this country – and in the western world in general – are impatiens and petunias.

The importation of impatiens plants is banned at the moment, but you can either seek out a nursery that is raising its own seedlings or buy packets of seeds and grow your own. Very few annuals can match impatiens for mass plantings and variety of colours. Fortunately, they are easy to grow from seed and also re-seed readily when summer is over.

Petunias give great pleasure but are somewhat maintenance intensive when grown in specimen pots. The spent flowers need to be picked as they do not drop readily and for the beginner it is sometimes a problem identifying a spent flower from one that is about to open. I think we have all picked a few incipient blossoms by accident. The petals are greasy and sticky and unpleasant to deal with.

Vinca That said, very few flowering plants can match petunias for impressive display. There are petunia varieties that are designed to sprawl rather than stand upright and these make a beautiful ground cover for otherwise unattractive areas.

I visited my old friend Patrick J Bethel in mid-November and noticed a sizeable planter in his garden set out with what

from a distance appeared to be impatiens. Closer inspection showed them to be vincas.

They were certainly doing a good job acting as an impatiens substitute and I invested in a couple of packets of vinca seed for my own yard.

Vinca has become naturalised throughout the islands as periwinkle or Sailor’s Button.

establish themselves readily and can endure really tough conditions. Modern vincas do not have the same hardiness but are still durable. The range of modern vinca petal colours is as extensive as those of impatiens.

Marigolds come in several different sizes and can be singles or doubles. The main colours are yellow, red and orange. Marigolds are very easy to grow from seed and the small varieties make excellent borders for flower beds.

Middle-sized marigolds can be grown in ornamental pots for best viewing and there are attractive varieties that have red, yellow and orange petals on the same flower.

Daisies have their own particular charm and three from Africa are good candidates for the garden: African daisy, gerbera, and Transvaal daisy. These can be grown separately or mixed en masse as they all have the same growing needs. Shasta daisies are perennials and have white or cream petals that provide a contrast to the richer colours of most annuals.

Nasturtiums are deservedly very popular and can be grown in hanging baskets to good effect. The round leaf foliage is the perfect foil to large and intricate flowers that come in many colours.

Some varieties of nasturtium are designed for ground cover.

The leaves can be shredded and added to green salads for a zesty flavour. As a bonus the large pea-sized seeds can be used to re-stock the garden.

Pansies and violas are plants with similar needs that almost demand to be grown at eye level so their intricate petal colours can be fully

appreciated. Growing pansies and violas is like growing jewels.

If you like roses you will love lisianthus as a winter annual. The rose-like flowers grow on plants with bushy foliage that are real eye-catchers.

Begonias bear fairly similar flowers and the added attraction of shapely leaves.

Do not forget that our summer flower also grow in winter and grow better.

Cosmos comes in a wide variety of plant sizes and flower colours. The tall ones can become leggy but the shorter ones are very reliable performers.

Just about all your flower needs can come from packets of zinnias. These range from Lilliput types for edging to sturdy giants with double blossom heads that provide high visibility at the back of beds against walls. Many zinnias look just like asters, others look like daisies. The colour range is larger than any other flowers I can think of.

Ornamental hot peppers, especially those that hold their fruits upright, make a dramatic statement in the winter flower beds. Many hot pepper plants will die off if their fruits are unpicked but ornamental peppers will make a show without weakening. All hot peppers are edible so your ornamentals can provide heat for your conch salad in an emergency.

This winter I am growing borage in pots. Yes, I know borage is a herb, but it is so ethereally beautiful when its hairy leaves catch the morning dew and its nodding blue flowers seem almost wise.

Once a sensation, ‘Walking Dead’ is another show NEW YORK (AP) — At some point, a television sensation becomes just another show. The numbers illustrate how that’s become the case with AMC’s drama, “The Walking Dead.”

The zombies are taking a break at the halfway point of their ninth season, following an episode on Sunday that was seen by 5.1 million people. The Nielsen company said that at a similar point last year, the midseason finale reached 7.9 million people.

For the first seven episodes of the season, the show’s viewership was down 23 percent compared with last

year for people who watched on the night of its premiere, and down 21 percent when people who record it and watch within three days are taken into account, Nielsen said. Increasing numbers of the show’s fans, particularly younger ones, are waiting a couple of days to see a new episode.

The high point for “The Walking Dead” was its seventh season opener, seen by 21 million people.

AMC acknowledges the drop in popularity, which is hardly unusual for television shows as they age. The network says it is hard for “The Walking

Dead” to compete with the ratings standard set when it was a cultural touchstone, but that it’s still television’s second-ranked drama behind NBC’s “This is Us” among youthful viewers.

The network is also encouraged that the show survived the departure of star Andrew Lincoln earlier this season without a major drop in viewership.

Each episode averaged 8.2 million viewers the night that it aired and during the week afterward, down 22 percent from last year’s average of 10.4 million, Nielsen said. The show was once a routine top 10 performer for ABC, but last week’s semi-finals finished out of the top 20. A figure for Monday’s finale was not immediately available.

TV Christmas movies than ever NEW YORK (AP) — Have you heard the one about the girl who didn’t care about Christmas but found herself in a small town for the holidays surrounded by decorations, cookies and carolers, and found a new boyfriend and her Christmas spirit by December 25? Hallmark Channel has, and they’re airing 22 original movies this year built around plots similar to that.

The premise may vary, but the themes are the same and Hallmark is very OK with that.

“Yes, you can pretty much guarantee that when you meet our two leads in the first 10 minutes of a Hallmark movie, it’s guaranteed that they will end up together,” said Michelle Vicary, the executive vice president of programming and network publicity for Crown Media and Family Networks.

While regular network primetime programming tends to take a hiatus during the holiday season, it’s Hallmark Channel’s time to shine. Their holiday movies are so popular, they begin airing Christmas movies on October 26 and wrap up on January 1.

Hallmark sells shirts that say, “All I want to do is drink hot cocoa and watch Hallmark Channel.” This year there’s also an app called Countdown

to Christmas to keep track of the programming on Hallmark Channel and its sister channel, Hallmark Movies and Mysteries (which offers more spiritual fare.) There’s an option to set alerts on your phone and add the movie start times to your calendar. On launch day, it had 140,000 downloads.

This year, Hallmark Channel has films starring LeAnn Rimes, Kellie Pickler and Patti LaBelle, but the network also features recurring actresses, dubbed the “Christmas queens” internally by Hallmark, who front a new movie a season on the network: Candace Cameron Bure, Lacey Chabert, Danica McKellar and Lori Loughlin.

Candace Cameron Bure (”Fuller House”) reigns supreme. “For the last three years she has had the No 1 Christmas movie on the Hallmark Channel with very, very stiff competition from Chabert and Loughlin,” said Vicary.

Bure said the reaction to her Hallmark Christmas movies encourages her to keep making them but also find interesting ways to tell stories that fit the formula.

Her film this year, “A Shoe Addict’s Christmas,” is based on a novel by best-selling author Beth Harbison.

The biggest motivation for returning to Hallmark year after year is the fans, said Bure. “It’s more than ratings.

It’s more than a cheesy holiday spirit.

There’s a deep meaning behind (these movies) for some people. I love all of them, and that’s why I keep doing them.”

Lacey Chabert, who is also known for roles in “Party of Five” and “Mean Girls,” says she considers it “an honour” to keep making Christmas movies for Hallmark.

Danica McKellar agrees: “I really believe these movies encourage connection,” she said, joking that she can’t count the number of times she’s said “family traditions” in her films, adding that’s the point. “It’s not about ratings.

It’s about sticking to a set of values that the brand holds dear.”

She’s especially excited about her offering this year, “Christmas at Grand Valley,” because it reunites her with her former “The Wonder Years” costar, Dan Lauria, who plays her dad in the movie.

Hallmark Channel isn’t the only network airing holiday fare. Lifetime does it too and begins airing mostly holiday

programming after November 21.

Films this year include “Every Day is Christmas” starring Toni Braxton and Tia Mowry-Hardrict’s “My Christmas Inn.” They also have their own crop of “go to” talent including Tatyana Ali of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and Melissa Joan Hart of “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.”

Hart’s “A Very Nutty Christmas” debuts tonight on Lifetime. “I don’t want to make Christmas movies just my thing,” said Hart. “But it’s the only place where TV movies still thrive,” she said.

Netflix has also followed suit with its own original holiday movies. Last year it offered “A Christmas Prince” starring Rose McIver and this year there’s a sequel, “A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding.” They’ve also added new movies starring Kurt Russell, Kat Graham and Vanessa Hudgens.

The downward spiral of a

literary darling Sir Christopher Ondaatje continues his biography of “Breakfast at Tiffany” and “In Cold Blood” author Truman Capote, who betrayed New York’s high society.

O

n November 16, 1959 Truman Capote read a 300-word article in The New York Times describing the unexplained murder of the Clutter family in rural Holcomb, Kansas. The local Sheriff is quoted as having said, “This is apparently the case of a psychopathic killer.” Inspired by this news article, Capote travelled with his good friend and author Harper Lee (”To Kill a Mockingbird”) to Holcomb and visited the scene of the massacre. They arrived two days after the Clutters’ funeral.

“The whole thing was a complete mystery and was for two and a half months. Nothing happened. I stayed there and kept researching it ... I never knew whether it was going to be interesting or not ... anything could have happened. They could never have

caught the killers ... but as it happened they did catch them. In January (1960) the case was solved, and I made very close contact with these two boys and saw them very often over the next four years until they were executed. But I never knew ... when I was even halfway through the book, when I had been

working on it for a year and a half, I honestly didn’t know whether I would go on with it or not, whether it would finally evolve itself into something that would be worth all that effort. Because it was a tremendous effort.”

During Capote’s and Lee’s time in Kansas, the Clutters’ suspected killers, Richard Hickock and Perry Smith, were caught in Las Vegas and brought back to Kansas where Harper Lee and Capote interviewed the subjects, as well as townspeople, family of the Clutters, and investigators working on the crime. They returned to New York and Capote started work on his article, which would evolve into the non-fiction masterpiece “In Cold Blood”.

In March 1960, Lee and Capote returned to Kansas for the murder trial – where the two killers were convicted and sentenced to death. However, their execution was delayed because of a series of appeals. The murderers had hoped that Capote and his article would be sympathetic and they would escape execution. Thus they fully cooperated with Capote’s questioning. They were very upset when it was revealed that the title of Capote’s article was to be “In Cold Blood”, which intimated that the murders had been premeditated. They were finally executed on April 14, 1965.

“In Cold Blood” was published in 1966 by Random House after having been serialised in four issues by The New Yorker magazine. The non-fiction novel brought Capote instant literary acclaim and became an international bestseller. Capote would never complete another novel.

Although “In Cold Blood” brought Capote both wealth and fame, he was never quite the same again. His research and emotional involvement in the murky subject had taken a brutal toll on him both psychologically and physically. His drinking increased and

his addiction to tranquilisers and other drugs escalated.

Capote received enormous praise from the literary community, although some questioned the veracity of interviews as quoted by Capote. Kenneth Tynan in The Observer implied that Capote wanted the convicted murderers executed – so that he had an effective ending to his book.

“For the first time an influential writer of the front rank has been placed in a position of privileged intimacy with criminals about to die, and – in my view – done less than he might have to save them. The focus narrows sharply down on priorities: Does the work come first, or does life? An attempt to help (by supplying new psychiatric testimony) might easily have failed: What one misses is any sign that it was ever contemplated.”

There is little doubt that Truman Capote had achieved a work of art.

He had crafted a superb story of high terror, but the brilliance of his sometimes fabricated story also brought him moral criticism. Despite that, the book made Capote the equivalent of $6 million in 1960s money – an enormous publishing and personal success.

In spite of his personal problems Capote, coincidentally with the publication of “In Cold Blood”, created one of the biggest social events of the 1960 calendar year. More sought after than ever, Capote wrote articles for magazines and newspapers and concentrated on becoming a celebrity and mixing with the jet set: Princess Lee Radziwell, Jacqueline Kennedy, Babe and William Paley, Tennessee Williams, other popular authors and publishers.

On November 28, 1966, in honour of The Washington Post publisher Katherine Graham, Capote sponsored the now legendary masked Black and White Ball in the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in New York, which garnered a huge amount of publicity. Capote decided, for the dress code, that men would dress in black tie, and stipulated that women could wear either a black or a white dress.

Everyone had to wear a mask. It was the most sought after invitation of the season and received much publicity in The New York Times and other publications, and the event’s success prompted other similar events.

Capote was openly homosexual.

He spent the majority of his life, until he died, with Jack Dunphy, a fellow writer. By the late 1960s this

Capote loved mingling with celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, who was also his first choice to star in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, not Audrey Hepburn.

Dunphy urged Capote to stop drinking and taking drugs which, despite several trips to rehabilitation centres, Capote seemed unable to do. Nevertheless, the two remained close, staying in neighbouring homes in Sagaponack, Long Island. In Dunphy’s book “Dear Genius ... A Memoir of My Life with Truman Capote” (1987) he describes his 35-year tempestuous relationship with an alcohol-addicted person who existed outside the confines of intimacy. It is the most in-depth look at Capote’s life. Their separate living quarters allowed autonomy within the relationship and “spared the anguish of watching Capote drink and take drugs.”

Capote continued his debauched life, travelling in eclectic social circles,

mixing with authors, critics, wealthy businessmen, theatrical celebrities, and sometimes royalty. Cleverly, throughout his extravagant social life, Capote gathered observations for an explosive exposé novel – “Answered Prayers: The Unfinished Novel”, one chapter of which, titled “La Côte Basque”, was published in Esquire magazine in 1976.

That chapter aired a lot of his society friends’ dysfunctional and sordid secrets as thinly veiled fiction. No one escaped his poison pen. Not surprisingly, his new found friends, shocked at this betrayal, spurned his friendship and refused to have anything more to do with him. Surprised and hurt, Capote was pushed to new levels of drug abuse and alcoholism. He had not anticipated the backlash and ostracism.

Capote spent the late 1970s in and out of rehabilitation clinics. News of his various physical health problems often leaked out to the public. His last book, “Music for Chameleons” (1980), a collection of non fictional pieces, was published in 1980 including the novella “Handcarved Coffins” – another supposedly non-fiction account of an American crime – the distribution of miniature coffins, a rattlesnake murder, and a decapitation. It was a largely invented story – including his meeting with the suspected killer – a poor mirror of his brilliant “In Cold Blood”.

The book also included contributions to Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine – which he gave in return for an agreement for Warhol to paint his portrait. It went on to become another bestseller for Capote. He had a facelift, lost weight, and experimented with hair transplants, but was unable to conquer his drug and alcohol dependence.

Occasional articles appeared in Ladies Home Journal and Playboy magazine, but by the early 1980s he had become almost totally reclusive.

Truman Capote died on August 25, 1984 in California while staying with an old friend Joanne Carson – the ex-wife of Johnny Carson, the late night TV host. The cause of death was reported to be liver disease complicated by phlebitis and multiple drug intoxication.

Capote was cremated and his remains divided between Joanne Carson and Jack Dunphy. Carson’s portion of the ashes were reported to have been stolen twice from the room where Capote died – and recovered.

Jack Dunphy died in 1992, and both his and Capote’s ashes were scattered at Crooked Pond on Long Island close to Sagaponack, New York. A stone marker indicates the place where their mingled ashes were thrown into the pond. In 2016, some of Capote’s ashes, once owned by Joanne Carson, were auctioned by Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles for $43,750 and bought by an anonymous buyer. He would have loved the macabre event and the attention.

Sensual fresco discovered in ancient Pompeii bedroom ROME (AP) — Archaeologists have found a fresco in an ancient Pompeii bedroom that depicts a sensual scene of the Roman god Jupiter, disguised as a swan, and a legendary queen of Sparta from Greek mythology.

The figure of Leda being impregnated by the god in swan form was a fairly common home decoration theme in Pompeii and Herculaneum, another town destroyed in AD 79 by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius near present-day Naples.

But Pompeii archaeological park director Massimo Osanna praised this fresco as exceptional since it was painted to make it appear Leda was looking at whoever saw the fresco upon entering the bedroom.

“Leda watches the spectator with a sensuality that’s absolutely pronounced,” Osanna told Italian news agency ANSA. The fresco’s details include a depiction of Leda protecting the

The fresco, with its colours still remarkably vivid, was discovered Friday during ongoing work to consolidate the ancient city’s structures after rains and wear-and-tear in past years caused some ruins to collapse, the tourist site’s officials said.

The bedroom is located near a corridor by the entranceway of an upscale domus, or home, where another splendid fresco was discovered earlier this year, said the archaeological park, which is part of the Italian Culture Ministry.

Leda is an important figure in Greek mythology. She was said to have borne children fathered by the god Zeus, the Greek version of Jupiter, and by a mortal king of Sparta. According to myth, her children included the beautiful Helen

of Troy and the twins Castor and Pollux.

Osanna said one hypothesis is that the home’s owner was a rich merchant who wanted to give the impression he was culturally advanced by incorporating myth-inspired frescoes.

It appeared the artist was inspired by a 4th century BC sculpture by Timotheos, he said.

Because of safety concerns, unexcavated parts of the domus will probably remain that way, ANSA said. Archaeologists are considering removing both frescos found in the home to a place where “they can be protected and shown to the public,” Osanna was quoted as saying.

Pompeii’s sprawling, partially excavated grounds are one of Italy’s top tourist attractions.

Mostafa Waziri told reporters that the discovery at Saqqara also includes mummies of scarabs, the first ever to be found in the area.

Of the statues found, those depicting cats were the majority, reflecting the reverence ancient Egyptians showed the felines, whose God Bastet was worshipped. Other statues depicted a lion, a cow and a falcon.

Egypt has been whipping up publicity for its new historical discoveries in the hopes of reviving a devastated tourism sector still recovering from the turmoil following a 2011 uprising that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Aviation in the Bahamas

ow that my book “Bahamas Airways: The Rise and Demise of a British International Air Carrier” is on sale here in the Bahamas, and has been read by numerous people, I have frequent queries and suggestions, mostly from people who know that I was a Bahamas Airways captain.

Some wondered why I did not include sections on CW F Bethell’s Nassau Aviation Ltd, back in the 1940s, or International Air Bahama, Out Island Airways, Bahamas World Airlines and Bahamasair. The answer is simple. I did not have time to research those subjects. I could have mentioned all of them, but my book would have had many more than it 296 pages and priced itself out of the market.

International Air Bahama (IAB) flew between Luxembourg and Nassau.

That was their only route and they had only one plane, a Douglas DC-8 that made six round-trips across the Atlantic each week. Sunday was the day for rest and maintenance. IAB had an excellent on-time record, but lots of people mixed up Air Bahama with Bahamas Airways. This is still true today.

One evening, I was flying Bahamas Airways’ jet service to Miami, but several of the connecting passengers from IAB, failed to make the flight, even though IAB had arrived on schedule and many other IAB passengers were already seated on my plane.

The answer was unexpectedly simple: Bahamas Airways’ check-in counters were at the far end of the terminal and passengers walking from Customs to Bahamas Airways had to pass the Air Bahama counters. Several of them got confused, checked in on IAB and found themselves flying back to Luxembourg.

Bahamas World Airlines got little mention, because BWA came into being at the time BAL was put into voluntary liquidation. The owners of BAL felt they had double-crossed

when government granted a licence to BWA. OIA and Bahamasair are worthy of a book of their own, because the latter grew out of the former. In June 1973, OIA and the government formed a new flag carrier, Bahamasair Holdings Ltd. I was a pilot with Bahamasair for six months, including four and a half as chief pilot, and was amused by radio exchanges between Bahamasair planes and Air Traffic Control. Domestic flights used the call sign Bahamasair, but for several months flights to Florida were still using Out Island Airways as their call sign, because the US authorities had not yet processed Bahamasair’s application for permission to fly.

There were many “charter” companies, providing air-taxi services, including my own Trans Island Airways, which my son, Paul F Aranha, has now revived, with a fleet of jets, turbo-props and amphibians.

Do’s and don’ts when feeding your pet this Christmas

W

e are just 26 days away from Christmas day. It feels, to me, as if Christmas was just a few months ago. The months and weeks have whizzed this year.

Whilst we are all enjoying these special days of rejoicing, it is ever so tempting to want to feed your pet all the exotic and rich foods that we indulge in over this festive period. The days leading up to Christmas tend to be full of parties, food and alcohol, and we think that sharing this abundance with our pet is the kind thing to do... but please don’t, their digestive system is very different to ours.

Always be careful what you feed your pet, but over the next four weeks you really have to be watchful. I have listed below some pointers that you would be wise to remember this Christmas.

• Fruit cake: Please remember that the raisins and grapes in fruitcake can cause serious kidney problems that could cause health issues that can remain forever and would cause your pet untold distress, or even death.

• Turkey and ham skin: All and any highly fatty food is dangerous for your pet, and of course the skin of any meat usually has fat in it. What is particularly dangerous is the meat-soaked strings that frequently hold the bird together; they can cause a lot of digestive problems, and could result in surgery.

• Nuts: Macadamia nuts and walnuts can cause weakness in the legs and a fever. Put the nuts out of reach, please.

• Raw cookie dough: Though Fido will beg in the kitchen, don’t be tempted to drop a bit of cookie dough, it can actually rise in their stomachs. Not a happy thought.

• Onions and garlic: Onions and garlic are dangerous as they contain compounds that can damage your dog’s red blood cells when eaten.

Garlic can be worse than onions, but both are dangerous and should be avoided at all costs, and please note that cooking them does not make them any less toxic.

• Alcohol: Many animals love the taste of alcohol (it’s not just the human animal), especially if it is masked in eggnog. It is essential to understand that at no time is it ever OK to give your pet alcohol. Any amount of alcohol, especially beer, can be lifethreatening. The culprit in beer is the hops that can bring on fever, vomiting, fast heart rate that could lead to death.

There is nothing funny or cute about feeding your pet alcoholic beverages, it is not funny to see them “drunk”, it is animal cruelty and is actually punishable by law.

• Nutmeg: A large amount of Christmas foods have nutmeg in them.

Please remember that nutmeg can cause seizures if your dog eats any, even if it is only part of the dish; a mere sprinkling is dangerous. Sometimes there is nutmeg sprinkled on the top of sweet potatoes and that alone is sufficient to cause health issues and could actually lead to their death.

• Cooked bones: So many people think that all or any bones are just fine for their dogs. I hear, “Well, after all he is a potcake.” Well, you know what?

Your potcake is no different inside than any other dog, even if he did have a rough start in life. Cooked bones can cause serious internal problems, splintering in their digestive tract. Avoid them please; put your leftovers where your dog cannot reach them. It is a

good rule of thumb to clean up leftovers immediately in a secure, properly closed garbage receptacle. Even when you put your trash outside, protect the neighbourhood potcakes and secure your garbage; this makes your neighbourhood a nicer place, too.

• Chocolate: Never, ever, feed your pet chocolate, as it can lead to death. Dark chocolate is more dangerous than milk chocolate because the milk chocolate is somewhat diluted but can still cause very serious damage. If your dog or cat eats chocolate you need to induce vomiting and contact your vet immediately. This is incredibly serious; do not put off medical intervention.

Perhaps the best advice I can give you is be mindful that you have a furry member of the family who will beg for food but doesn’t know what is best for him; but you do.

Desiree is just one of many younger cats available for adoption at the Bahamas Humane Society. Because the BHS is no-kill, this eight-month-old tabby and white teen kitten is able to stay as long as needed until she finds her forever home, but Desiree is hoping that her

hypnosis trick will work and that you’ll adopt her. She is used to being with the other kittens in the kittenery so being one of a set won’t phase her and she enjoys the company of humans, too. Make sure you feed your dog only pet-appropriate treats and keep him away from harmful human food. not to feed your pet and tape it up in the kitchen; avoid confusion, save their lives, and save you vet’s bills!

Always put dangerous foods out of the way and be sure to have suitable treats available for your pet so they don’t feel left out and it will be a merry Christmas for all.
