The red kettles are out!

s the work of the Salvation Army is based on the teachings of the Bible, its ministry is motivated by the love of God and its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to meet human needs in His name - without discrimination. During the holidays, the organisation strives to give joy, laughter and hope through the kindness and generosity of individuals, families, donors and corporate Bahamas. This year, the Salvation Army is marking the start of the holiday season with the launch of its 2021 Red Kettle campaign under the theme “Hope Marches On.” For those not aware, the Red Kettle campaign supports the organisation’s mission to provide help and hope to those in need. This mission is fulfilled through a wide array of social services, which include providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, schooling and employment for the blind, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing

and shelter to the homeless, and opportunities for underprivileged children. “This is our annual bellringing season and our main fundraiser. As you would imagine, this is the only time of the year you would see us out with our iconic red kettle across New Providence, Grand Bahama and Eleuthera, which helps to raise funds for our programmes. These kettles help in everything the Salvation Army does every day, serving more than 40,000 persons per year. You are going to see them at the mall, the grocery stores, pharmacies and shopping plazas. Volunteers started as of November 15 and will continue up until December 24,” said Melanese Coakley, the Salvation Army’s community relations associate for the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Division. Ms Coakley said the red kettle campaign has grown so many ways where the team has now been able to cement partnerships with the companies and business owners on whose properties the kettles are stationed. “Without them we would not have a kettle programme because we need permission first and

foremost to place the kettles in front of these locations. A lot of people take that for granted, because if they don’t say yes, you won’t see us out there. So it is very important to us in terms of building those relationships. The volunteers, taking time out of their

busy schedules, are also the army behind the army in many ways that people just can’t imagine,” she said. And the volunteers are excited to get back out there. “We are very excited; our volunteers are excited and the local businesses are excited. You never know

what you were taking for granted when you weren’t allowed to do certain things last year. So, the volunteers are very enthused, meaning their protocols and COVID-19 guidelines are in place at all of our kettle stations, which is most important; safety first. We won’t be able to interact

like we used to, but still being able to see persons out and about is definitely something we are happy to do this Christmas season,” said Ms Coakley. This year’s theme, “Hope Marches On”, she added strengthens the organisation, its volunteers and partners in knowing it takes hope to carry on the work they do to help those in need. “When persons see those red kettles, I want them to please know that no donation is too small. There is also going to be a scan code, so they can also do it from the safety of their phones in their homes. We are definitely adding new ways to give,” said Ms Coakley. CIBC FirstCaribbean, a longtime supporter of the Salvation Army, will officially help launch the red kettle campaign on Friday at the the Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters, 31 Mackey Street, with a corporate donation presented by Dr Jacqui Bend, managing director of the bank. Entertainment will be provided by the Royal Bahamas Police Force Pop Band and the Bahamas Salvation Army Marching Band.

BISHOPS OK COMMUNION DOCUMENT By PETER SMITH Associated Press

THE UNITED States Conference of Catholic Bishops holds its Fall General Assembly meeting, Tuesday, November 16, 2021, in Baltimore. Photo:Julio Cortez/AP

BALTIMORE (AP) — US Catholic bishops overwhelmingly approved a long-anticipated document on Communion on Wednesday that stops short of calling for withholding the sacrament from politicians such as President Joe Biden who support abortion rights but offers plenty of tacit justification for individual bishops to do so. The US.Conference of Catholic Bishops’ first major statement on Communion in 15 years, “The Mystery of the Eucharist in the Life of the Church,” does not explicitly address the debate over elected officials, abortion and the sacrament that has surrounded the document over the past several months and partly inspired its creation in the first place. Instead, it gives an overview of church teaching, emphasizing the centrality of the Eucharist in the faith and worship and in part reflecting concern among bishops that many Catholics don’t know or accept such teachings. It was approved by a 222-8 vote at the conference’s fall assembly in Maryland after receiving only minor revisions in recent days by drafters on the bishops’ Committee on Doctrine. Drafters added a reference to defending “the unborn” along with other vulnerable persons, such as immigrants, older adults and victims of racial injustice. They also bolstered the definition of “scandal” as weakening the resolve of other Catholics to follow church teachings. The latter revision came in a passage reaffirming a 2006 statement saying it’s a scandal if a Catholic “in his or her personal or professional life were knowingly or obstinately to reject” the church’s doctrines or moral teachings. The document does not identify Biden or other politicians by name, though it says at one point, “Lay people who exercise some

form of public authority have a special responsibility to embody Church teaching.” It calls on Catholics to examine their conscience and make sure they’re in harmony with church teachings, and says bishops have a “special responsibility” to respond to situations “that involve public actions at variance with the visible communion of the church and the moral law.” Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas, who chairs the Committee on Pro-Life Activities and whose work includes advocacy against abortion, took the document as affirming the importance of “our responsibility for the care of the souls of these politicians.” Naumann, wearing a face mask with the words “REMEMBER The Unborn,” called for bishops to find common ground where politicians agree with the church’s vision for “the dignity of the human person.” But he also urged them “not to be afraid to fulfill our obligations to let them know how serious” it is to dissent from church teaching. Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas, an outspoken critic of the president, asked colleagues to amend the document by quoting the church catechism and the Bible as saying anyone who creates scandal would be better off having a “millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in ... the sea.” The proposal was met with silence when put to a voice vote and was not adopted. The conference cannot dictate a blanket policy on denying Communion to politicians; each bishop has authority in his own diocese. Denying the sacrament While some bishops have said they would deny the sacrament to Biden, the archbishop of Washington, Cardinal Wilton Gregory, has affirmed that the president is welcome to receive the sacrament there.

Biden has said that Pope Francis, too, told him in a recent private meeting in Rome to continue receiving Communion. While the Vatican has not confirmed that, Biden did subsequently go to Mass and receive Communion at a church in Rome — evidence that Francis did not forbid priests in the Diocese of Rome, which he oversees, from giving Communion to Biden. The document highlights the centrality of the doctrine of transubstantiation, which says that when a priest celebrates Mass, the bread and wine is transformed into Jesus’ actual body and blood. It says Catholics can perceive this as a reality through faith, even though the elements appear to the senses to be bread and wine. Some bishops have expressed concern over Catholics’ acceptance of the doctrine, citing a 2019 survey that found most church members don’t believe in transubstantiation. Other researchers have questioned that finding, however, saying that when survey questions are phrased differently, higher numbers of Catholics align with church teaching. The document also says the sacrament is central to church unity and worship and leads to “personal and moral transformation,” motivating believers to take care of vulnerable people and, in a broader sense, the environment. Bishops began working on the document after Biden took office, with some citing “confusion” over the president presenting himself as a devout Catholic despite his political stance on abortion. The Vatican repeatedly sent caution signals to the US bishops as they prepared the document. ___ • Associated Press religion coverage receives support from the Lilly Endowment through The Conversation US.

ecades of faithful and dedicated service on behalf of Deaconess Valerie Ferguson were officially recognised and honoured by the Exuma District of the Bahamas Baptist Union of Churches and Leslie Curtis, president of the Exuma District Convention, last week. President of the Women’s Ministry, Minister Melda Ferguson, and her executives selected Deaconess Ferguson to be this year’s honouree based on the commitment and passion she has displayed in serving not only the District in various capacities, but her local church as well. Deaconess Ferguson was born on November 17, 1953, in Forest, Exuma to the late Jasper Ferguson and Emily Humes-Cunningham of South Side. She attended the Forest All-Age School and always had a zeal to achieve the best in whatever she did. As a believer in Jesus Christ, she was baptised in 1972 and was active in every church auxiliary. Deaconess Ferguson is currently a member of Palestine Union Baptist Church in the Forest where the Rev Lynden Clarke is the pastor. Over the years, she has served as BTU secretary, youth president, choir directress, choir member, Sunday school superintendent and secretary, assistant secretary of the church, chairperson of Evangelism, counsellor of new converts and deaconesses. She has also been very instrumental in the Exuma District by serving as president of the Women’s Ministry, second vice president of the Bahamas Baptist Union Women’s Department, directress of the Youth Department and as field secretary. Deaconess Ferguson’s favourite scriptures are Psalms 34 and 133: “I will bless the Lord at all times; his praises shall continually be in my mouth...” On any given day, you can hear her delightfully singing “Bound for the land of Canaan”, “Where Could I Go”, “Sound The Battle Cry” and “I’m Glad I’ve Counted the Cost”. Deaconess Ferguson credits her late parents, as well as the late Rev Earnest Ferguson, Deacon Harold Adderley, Rev Louis Rolle, Rev Dr Irvin Clarke, Sr, and Rev Cedric Smith with much of her growth, development and success. Her three children, Clive Ferguson, Samantha, Katurah, and daughter-in-law Crystal all call her blessed. Her grandchildren, Clive, Jr, Azaria Wilson and Ciel Major sit at her feet to listen, learn and be inspired. Deaconess Ferguson received many gifts and tokens of appreciation during the recognition service, all of which she was very appreciative.

WILLIAM STERLING CARY, PIONEERING US BLACK PASTOR, DIES AT 94 By SOPHIA TAREEN Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) — William Sterling Cary, a pioneering minister and civil rights activist who was the first Black person in prominent church leadership roles including president of the National Council of Churches, has died, according to family members. He was 94. Cary died Sunday at his suburban Chicago home in Flossmoor following heart failure after a long illness, his daughter Yvonne Cary Carter said Monday. Born in 1927 in New Jersey, Cary showed a knack for leadership at a young age and was ordained as a teenager. He attended Atlanta’s Morehouse College where he served as student body president from 1948 to 1949, according to the school. While he was ordained a Baptist, he served in Presbyterian and United Church of Christ congregations, including in New York. In 1972, he became the first Black president of the National Council of Churches, a massive coalition of US Christian churches. Two years later, he was elected conference minister of the Illinois Conference of the United Church of Christ (UCC) — the first Black person named a UCC conference minister. He continued to lead the UCC’s third-largest conference with nearly 250 churches until retirement in 1994. “He was a person who often had that role of being the first and he carried it well. He carried it with distinction,” said the Rev Bernice Powell Jackson of the First United Church of Tampa, who worked with him. “We all looked up to him. He was articulate, he was forceful.” His advocacy also included challenging the church. Cary was among dozens of Black pastors who in 1966 penned a searing letter calling out white clergy and others on American race relations and outlining steps for change. It was published on a full-page of the New York Times and titled “Black Power.” “We, an informal group of Negro churchmen in America are deeply disturbed about the crisis brought upon our country by historic distortions of important human realities in the controversy about ‘black power.’ What we see, shining through the variety of rhetoric is not anything new but the same old problems of power and race which has faced our beloved country since 1619,” the July 31, 1966, statement read. Family members called Cary, who also went by W Sterling Cary, a devoted husband and father who loved to grill at family and church gatherings. His wife of 68 years, Marie, called her late husband a “warm, supportive and steadfast” man who “touched thousands of lives around the country.”

WHAT THE WORLD CAN LEARN FROM THE BUDDHIST CONCEPT LOVING-KINDNESS By BROOKE SCHEDNECK Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, Rhodes College (THE CONVERSATION) - As the world deals with the trauma caused by COVID-19, World Kindness Day, observed on November 13 annually, is a good opportunity to reflect on the healing potential of both large and small acts of kindness. Indeed, it was the kind acts of essential workers that helped save many lives. As a scholar of Buddhist studies, I have researched the ways in which Buddhist monks talk about kindness and compassion toward all beings. The Dalai Lama has famously been quoted as saying “My true religion is kindness.” Although there is more to Buddhism than just kindness, Buddhism’s teachings and exemplary figures, I believe, have much to offer to a world experiencing intense suffering.

The seen and the unseen, Those living near and far away, Those born and to-be-born — May all beings be at ease! In order to put these words into practice, several Buddhist teachers from North America teach meditation practices meant to develop one’s own metta, or loving-kindness. During meditation sessions, practitioners can visualise people and chant wishes of loving-kindness using variations of phrases based on the Karaniya Metta Sutta. A commonly used version is from a

well-known Buddhist meditation teacher, Sharon Salzberg. May all beings everywhere be safe and well. May all beings everywhere be happy and content. May all beings everywhere be healthy and strong. May all beings everywhere be peaceful and at ease. Practitioners spread this kindness toward themselves, people close to them, people they do not know – even distant people or enemies – and finally all beings throughout the world. After visualising this attitude of loving-kindness, practitioners find it is easier

Loving-kindness teachings Some of the earliest Buddhist teachings developed in India – which are recorded in the Pali canon, the collection of scriptures in the Pali language – emphasized the idea of “metta,” or loving-kindness. One teaching from this collection of scriptures is the “Karaniya Metta Sutta,” where the Buddha exhorts the good and wise to spread loving-kindness by making these wishes toward all beings: In gladness and in safety, May all beings be at ease. Whatever living beings there may be; Whether they are weak or strong, omitting none, The great or the mighty, medium, short or small,

to radiate kindness toward others in real life. In addition to metta, Buddhists also practice compassion (karuna), sympathetic joy (mudita) and equanimity (upekkha) for a peaceful state of mind. Cultivating compassion Later forms of Buddhism in East Asia and Tibet

developed the idea of compassion further through the figure of the bodhisattva. The bodhisattva is a practitioner who has vowed to work selflessly for the enlightenment of other beings. The development of this state of mind is known as “bodhicitta.” Bodhicitta provides the motivation

and commitment to this difficult path of putting others before oneself. One practice for cultivating bodhicitta is exchanging self for others. In this practice, those on the bodhisattva path would regard the suffering of others as if it were their own and would offer help to others as if helping oneself.
