There is always time to pray

– Tips to finding time to speak with God –

FINDING time to pray at the height of busiest season of the year can be a challenge for many Chris tians. And the closer it gets to Christmas; the more chaotic things will become. But nev ertheless, it’s important to find time to set aside to commune with the Lord.

Tribune reader Tyra admitted it can be difficult to incorporate praying time into her family’s hectic daily schedule.

“In the mornings I am rush ing to get the kids up and out and get myself to work, and then in the evenings it is our nighttime schedule: homework, laundry, cooking, making sure everyone is ready for bed, only to do it again the next day,” she said.

“Once I crash, I’m so exhausted. I feel like I just mumble one lil’ prayer before I fall asleep.”

Christina said while she always prays with her kids at bedtime, she never feels like she has enough time for quiet intercessions.

“I feel like I never have enough quiet time to truly kneel down and trouble the

Throne of God,” she said. “It is something that I really want to make more time for because I feel that praying on behalf of others is so important.”

Nikeisha said she is under so much stress that she feels the need to pray more often, but has trouble finding quiet moments to talk to God.

“I live in a house with six other people; there is no pri vacy. I share a room, and if I go in the bathroom, eventually someone has to get in there.”

Monalisa, who is a member of her church’s prayer group, offered this advice:

“The good thing about prayer is that God accepts it in all forms whether it be a simple ‘Dear Lord’ or a full on twoor three-hour session. So, you can talk to Him in little spurts while you are putting on your makeup or washing dishes, or when you can sit in traf fic. I find scheduling a specific prayer time works, so maybe you wake up an hour earlier one morning a week and use that time to pray, or stay up a little later. That is why I love our prayer group, we meet every second Monday of the night for two hours and we can pray for ourselves, our fami lies and our friends. Having a prayer buddy can be a big help

as well. But the more you make the effort and find those quite moments to pray the easier it will be.”

The online blog Prayers and Possibili ties with Kathryn Shirey also suggests praying while you’re in the shower, during your commute, over lunch,

“In the mornings I am rushing to get the kids up and out and get myself to work, and then in the evenings it is our nighttime schedule: homework, laundry, cooking, making sure everyone is ready for bed, only to do it again the next day.”

during any waiting times (for instance for doctor appoint ments), in the gym as you work out to upbeat praise songs, and in the evenings instead of scrolling through Facebook and other social media apps.

ANGLICANS CELEBRATE BELOVED CATECHIST

“ROOSIE” AND HIS 60 PLUS YEARS OF SERVICE

ON SATURDAY, Novem ber 12, Anglicans from all works of life assembled at 9am at St Matthew’s Church for a mass of thanksgiving to celebrate with Catechist William Thomas Roosevelt Godet, affectionally referred to as “Roosie”.

The celebrant for this occa sion the Rev Father Scott Jupp, resident assistant curate at St Matthew’s. The preacher was Canon Basil Leon Tynes, rector of the historic parish.

Catechist Roosie has served the Anglican Diocese for 60 plus years.

The sung mass began with the Introit hymn, “Morning has broken, like the first morn ing”, which is one the catechist’s favourites.

The first lesson was taken from Isaiah 40: 8-11 and read by his grandson, Tshombe Godet. This was followed by Psalm 71: 16-18 led responsively by Temperance Thurston, his granddaughter.

The epistle was read by Anwar Godet, taken from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, followed by the gradual hymn, “Blessed Assur ance Jesus is mine”, after which the Rev Father Andrew Toppin, Rector of St James in Adeliade, chanted the gospel exert which was taken from Luke 14; 1-11.

Canon Tynes in his address focuses on segment of Luke’s gospel in which Jesus says, “For all exalt themselves will be humble and all who humble themselves will be exalted.”

In his preliminary exegesis, he told the congregation that during the time which Jesus lived, the Pharisees and Scribes loved the places of honour and recognition. These two groups celebrated their power, prestige and popu larity amongst people who were less than themselves.

Canon Tynes said for as long as he has known Catechist Godet, he was always a humble, downto-earth man; “What you see is what you get.”

Bishop Michael Eldon, the first Bahamian Diocesan Bishop, allowed Catechist Roosie to travel the length and breadth of the Bahamas and gave per mission for him to sing the gospel during certain eucharist celebrations.

Canon Tynes reminded the congregation that Catechist Godet was the driving force behind the establishment of the Cursillo Movement in the Angli can Diocese in the early 1980s.

He urged Catechist Godet to look back over of the nine dec ades of his earthly sojourn and to count his blessings that came from the Almighty and to con tinue to show a heart of gratitude and humility.

And finally, he told the con gregation that Catechist Godet would have not accomplished some of his goals if his dear wife had not been by his side, encour aging him and supporting his every move and trip with the Bishop.

Canon Tynes said Mrs Godet epitomises the virtuous woman as described in the Bible.

In conclusion, he told Cate chist Godet to continue to listen to the voice of Jesus and to take a seat, because God is not finished with him yet and it is time for him to move up higher.

Also in attendance at the ser vice were former Prime Minister Perry Christie, Archdeacon King sley Knowles, Canon Delano Archer, Canon Crosley Walkine and Father Chester Burton from St Matthew’s, Father Scott Bren nen, Rev Chitan Thompson, and former Member of Parliament Loretta Butler-Turner.

WHAT IS THE ROSARY? WHY A SET OF BEADS AND PRAYERS ARE CENTRAL TO CATHOLIC FAITH

(THE CONVERSATION) It’s one of the most famous moments in modern Catholicism: the apparition of Our Lady of Fatima. The Virgin Mary allegedly appeared to three Portuguese children in 1917, when much of the world was engulfed in World War I. Over a series of six appearances, Mary emphasized to these young shepherds that to bring peace, they should pray the rosary every day.

Devotion to the rosary already had a centuries-old history, and the Marian apparition at Fatima only deepened it. So what is a rosary, and why is it so important to many Catholics?

As an archivist and associate pro fessor for the University of Dayton’s Marian Library, I curate a collec tion of artifacts that illustrate many forms of popular devotion to the Virgin Mary, including nearly 900 unique rosaries. Each one tells a story of the people who owned them and how rosaries have evolved.

The word “rosary” refers to a set of prayers in the Catholic Church as well as a physical object. While praying the rosary, Catholics use a

set of beads or knots to count and keep track of the prayers. Prayer beads as physical counting tools are quite common in several religions, including Islam, Hinduism, Bud dhism and Jainism.

The exact origins of the rosary are debated. Many theologians believe it was at least popularized by St Dominic de Guzman, a Span ish mystic and priest who allegedly received a vision in 1208 of the Virgin Mary in which she presented him with the rosary.

The Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7 each year – previ ously known as the Feast of Our Lady of Victory to commemorate a Christian victory in a naval battle in 1571. Soon after, Pope Gregory XIII changed the title of the holy day, and now the entire month of Octo ber is dedicated to the rosary.

To pray the rosary, a person will begin by holding the crucifix, make a sign of the cross over their chest and recite the Apostles’ Creed, which lays out the basics of Chris tian faith – such as that Jesus is the son of God and rose from the dead.

Generally, a rosary will con tain five groups of 10 beads each, known as a decade. When touch ing each of these beads, the user will recite a Hail Mary prayer. At

the completion of each decade is a slightly larger bead, which is a cue to recite the Lord’s Prayer – another of the most important prayers in Chris tianity – and to meditate on one of the 20 mysteries, significant events in the life of Jesus and Mary.

The decade is completed by saying the Glory Be to the Father prayer, and after completing all five decades, the user recites the Hail, Holy Queen prayer to Mary. The US Conference of Catholic Bish ops outlines detailed instructions, including a diagram showing the different parts of the rosary and the accompanying prayers.

The rosary can be recited alone, or in groups. Some Catholics pray the rosary daily, and many recite it to thank God or to ask for interces sion, such as healing or protection for a loved one.

The Marian Library’s collection demonstrates how the rosary as an object can be very personal and also engage different senses as people pray. Some are very fragrant, such as those made from peach pits. Some are souvenirs brought back from particular shrines, such as ones from the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in France, which contain drops of holy water from its spring. Other rosaries glow in the dark or are made from birthstones.

Great Commission Ministries to feed 2,000 with Thanksgiving luncheon

Today, Great Com mission Ministries will embark on the mammoth task of feeding the nearly 2,000 people for its annual Bishop Hanchell's Thanksgiving Luncheon.

But thankfully, the staff and volunteers of the minis tries are up to the challenge. They will once again ensure that those in need in the community have a “scrump tious meal”. It all starts today at 12.30pm at the ministries on Wulff Road.

“The ministries antici pate feeding 2,000 needy persons with a free scrump tious Thanksgiving dinner as we celebrate Great Commission Ministries Month,” said Bishop Walter Hanchell, founder of Great Commission.

“A number of gifts will be given out and we expect to see persons from through out New Providence, including our elderly.”

Bishop Hanchell said the ministries are looking forward to once again be a blessing to those less fortu nate in the community.

The luncheon will also be a time to give thanks to God for how far he has brought the ministries.

For the reminder of the month, Great Commission Ministries will mark 35 years of answering the Christian call and faithfully serving the less fortunate with a series of special events.

Next on the agenda is Great Commission Min istries Day, to be held on November 29.

During this time, Great Commission, led by Bishop Hanchell, will also honour those who have been strong supporters of the work the ministries continue to do in helping the helpless.

Prime Minister Phillip Davis in a recent proclama tion declared November as Great Commission Minis tries Month.

Mr Davis stated that the ministries have been “a pillar of strength, and a beacon of hope to the down trodden, the marginalized, the shut-ins, refugees and those affected by natural disasters and crisis.”

Last week, Great Com mission hosted a celebratory church service at Christian Life Centre to mark its 35th year.

During the service, Bishop Hanchell expressed profound gratitude to all who have given of their time, money and resources to help the ministries accomplish its goals of being a place of refuge for those who have no food or hope.

Bishop Hanchell is wellknown throughout the Bahamas for his unselfish and relentless work with the poor, the elderly, the unemployed, the underprivileged, as well as disaster victims.

In 1987, with his wife Elder Minalee Hanchell by his side, Bishop Hanchell launched the Great Commission Minis tries International in New Providence with a vision to provide food, shelter, employment as well as counselling and help to young people struggling with anti-social behaviour and substance abuse.

To date, Great Commis sion Ministries, situated at their # 237 Wulff Road, remains a vital part of the community and serves as a primary source of relief and provision to countless indi viduals and families.

They rely on the donors to fulfil their mission of being a beacon of hope.
