oul of a Woman Productions presented a special concert last weekend, designed to inspire love throughout the country, bring couples closer together, and create an overall night of good feelings for Bahamians to enjoy.

Adrianna Munnings & Friends appeared live in concert, singing classic love songs, R&B favourites, and some original compilations. The group wanted to “Reconnect, Restore, Renew – Feel Love, Show Love, Be Love”. And they were successful. Couples came out for the event and weren’t afraid to show open affection as the concert rolled on.

They were treated to dinner, wine and dessert, as a full line-up of performers gave the crowd four solid hours of entertainment.

The venue, the St John’s College auditorium, was decorated for the occasion, the red carpet was rolled out and red lighting set the mood. Couples snuggled up for performances from the likes of Adrianna Munnings, the group’s founder, who received a standing ovation. She poured her heart into her performance, as was evident from the tears that flowed as she sung. Each artist also took a moment to share a brief personal love story or give a word of encouragement after their performance.

The crowd rose to their feet to give a rousing round of applause to Adrianna Sherman and Rashad Cunningham for their vocal abilities. Every performer gave a classy performance and could hold their own on an international stage, which made patrons feel like their money was well spent. Other performers included Tomiko Taylor, Val Griffin, Alex Sherman, Judy Bain and Tonguekeia Lafleur-Major. Members of the audience got up out of their seats and placed money on the stage as a seed offering without being prompted to do so, to help defray the costs, seeing that the crowd was not what organisers may have anticipated.

Guests enjoyed hits from Luther Vandross, Mariah Carey, Anita Baker, Bebe & Cece Winans, Michael Bolton, Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton and others.

Travis Edgecombe and Keturah Clarke hosted, while comedian Jaquay, also

known as “Bertram Oh Bubbler” kept the crowd entertained during the acts. A lively band led by Orval Stubbs provided music, assisted by audio engineer Michael “Selector” Davis.

Adrianna Munnings is a singer, songwriter, talent scout, recording artist and soul music enthusiast. She shared the stage with her group of artists under the theme: “Reunited – Let’s Stay in Love”.

“We did this for God to strengthen marriages,” Adrianna said.

“Marriage, and relationships on the whole, are a lot of work. This was also to give hope to singles, those who are divorced or widowed, and to give these upcoming artists a platform for their talent.”

Adrianna has been singing for a long time and after years in the business she felt the need to help to create opportunities for other artists to shine.

“I wanted to give back to the singers and musicians,” she said.

This event was funded mainly from Adrianna and ticket sales, along with donations from Aldo Stubbs, Julian and LaNell Rolle, Lady Patricia Russell, BAF Financial, Coca Cola, Bristol Wines & Spirits, Jubilee Christian Ministries International, Apostle Sterling & Prophetess McPhee, Pastor Melvin Grant, Remnant Tabernacle of Praise, Seventeen Shop, Classic Formal Wear, Audio and Visual Engineers, DJ Counsellor, Adrian Francis, Darold Miller and Michael Davis.

Adrianna is hoping that exposure from the event will result in sponsors for the next one. Adrianna Munnings & Friends are constantly participating in events that uplift and inspire.

“It’s a lot of hard work and a lot of heart,” she said, “And our world, our nation, needs true love and pure love.”

Guests raved about the show and called for an encore twice as Adrianna wrapped up the show with all performers on stage. The audience called for the group to host another event, perhaps for Valentine’s Day. Adrianna told Tribune Weekend: “If we have great sponsors on board to pay the artists, then it’s a go! I believe in paying people.”

“In every song there is a message and in every message there is a song.

Songs bring healing to our minds, hearts and bodies, and I was excited to be able to do that and share the stage with such talented artists.”

interview Sometimes men of the cloth can appear unapproachable, but in the case of Bishop Roston L Davis, Felicity Ingraham found a man of humility with a deep sense of peace. She speaks to him about his 45 years of service as a pastor to the country.

ersons who hold the title of ‘senior pastor’ or ‘bishop’ may often be perceived as too “high up” to make time for those they come into contact with. But Bishop Roston L Davis, OBE, is different. He wears a smile that he is well-known for and shares freely with the world, his big heart always in evidence.

When you meet Bishop Ros – as he is affectionately known – he is so down to earth that it’s hard to imagine that he runs one of the most well-known Christian churches in southern New Providence, the Golden Gates World Outreach Ministries on Carmichael Road.

The church is home to about a thousand members and has been serving the community since it was first established just before the Bahamas became an independent nation.

At that time, a young Ros was returning home from seminary school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with his wife and two sons. Pastor Dr Gary Curry made the call and invited him to consider leading the new church.

He had offers to remain in the US and preach the gospel, but he decided to come home to a country that was about to gain its independence from Great Britain, and whose citizens were committed to shaping a new Bahamas.

“I arrived home just months before the Union Jack was lowered and the Bahamian flag was hoisted,” he told Tribune Weekend.

In the US, he had been exposed to the racial discrimination and segregation that existed. “I had been in America and over there it was conflict between white and black. My thought was, ‘How could I help my people become independent?’ It wasn’t until I got back home that the two came

together – how to get people to be independent and how to influence the people to move forward in the ways of God.” Bishop Ros found the answer in the youth of the nation. His church began with five adults, all who were seniors in age, and about 30 children. His initial youth outreach programme was wildly popular, as parents entrusted their children to the care of the church for Friday night events and Sunday church services. Once parents started attending to watch the kids perform, they were also inspired to become a part of the church.

Today, Bishop Ros’ impact extends beyond his home church. He is a national treasure who shares himself indiscriminately with persons of other denominations and races, and is often summoned to share his wisdom with congregations outside of the country as well. But his heart is always with the young people, he said.

“I wish that era would play over and over again; I loved it,” he said about the days when his church was just getting started and he spent endless nights with young people – praying, teaching, guiding and laughing with them.

“The children came and did it (made the church grow); the young people.

Our first outburst was young people, and we still have a strong kids ministry,” he said.

The next major growth spurt for Golden Gates Outreach occurred during the drug scourge of the 1980s.

Homes in New Providence were being ripped apart as loved ones turned to the life of crack cocaine, often ending up on the streets. This social ill was of such concern to Bishop Davis that he travelled to Florida on a special mission to learn exactly how to help cocaine addicts. He went into the rehab centres

Bishop Ros and Althea Davis. there and worked first-hand with drug addicts, and he also went out on the street to spend time with them to understand how they thought and what led them to resort to drugs.

“I learned all I could and I came back to help my people, to deal with them, talk with them, understand them and not condemn them. Their families supported us in saving them,” he said.

His methods had a great impact and he turned around so many lives that the families of former addicts also ventured into the church to find out what was leading their loved ones on the path to this new and positive life.

Bishop Ros has had great role models all his life to pattern himself after, especially his father. The late Rev Harry Davis was a well-respected church leader who had christened, married and baptised so many Bahamians that Bishop Ros admits that he is still benefitting from his father’s graces even today. His father and mother, Doreen Davis, raised their family in Mangrove Cay, Andros, a typical Family Island settlement where children helped their parents fish, farm and fulfil chores around the house and in the field.

Like so many men during the time of Ros’ childhood, his father went to Florida on the “Contract”, in which Bahamians went to work in construction as the cities of Florida were created. Many families, however, were broken apart as the workers started

new families in America while their wives and children were left behind in the islands. However, Rev Davis had already been ordained in America in the 1930s and was busy spreading the gospel while working on the Contract.

He maintained a close relationship with his family and supported them until he returned to Mangrove Cay. Bishop Ros was about 13 years old when he wrote a letter to his father in the US to inform him that he wanted to be baptised.

“My father never discouraged me; he simply said to be sure that that was what I wanted to do, and I was,” he said.

Rev Davis inspired all of his children to follow in his footsteps. Bishop Ros’ brother, Bishop B Wenith Davis, and his sister, Apostle Merilee Watson, are still following this path. Bishop Ros is no different; his children are actively involved in ministries and outreach programmes, proving that he has successfully continued his father’s legacy.

“To my father, every son was his son.

He had a good word for every child. I never heard him say a wicked word about anyone, especially young men.

I meet people at the hospital, banks, everywhere (I meet people that he impacted), so we are living off of the legacy he left,” he said.

On December 1, Golden Gates World Outreach Ministries will commemorate Bishop Ros’ 45th

A young Ros Davis anniversary as pastor with a sapphire gala ball at the Meliá Nassau Beach Resort. On Sunday, December 3, two special church services will be held at 7.30am and at 3pm, with long-serving church members to be honoured.

Bishop Ros wanted to make sure the focus was placed on the members and not on himself, as they contributed meaningfully to the growth and success of his church.

“It brings me joy going into the community and talking to people, hearing their problems and offering what I can,” he said.

“I also enjoy travelling on missions around the world. It is such a pity that at this age you feel some things which tells you that you are not as young as you used to be. But apart from that, I’m ready to go! I am not ready to sit down. I like doing what I am doing. I come to work every day. My head is going a mile a minute all the time. If I were to die and this isn’t out, what am I going to say to God? I have to keep going.”

He took a leap of faith as a young man when he left a good paying job as a Customs officer, while he was paying a mortgage, to leave for seminary school. But he said the Lord was calling him to the point where he could no longer take communion because he felt he was not being obedient to God by failing to go into ministry. His wife, Althea, was a strong support. She moved to the US with him. Bishop Ros went to school from 7.30am to 1pm on weekdays, and went to work at 1.30pm.

Mrs Davis worked a full day’s shift, and together they stuck it out for four years before returning to the Bahamas for Ros to start his ministry. Today, they are the parents of five children: Stan, Trent, Terez, Adrian and Delores, and seven grandchildren.

He counts Evangelistic Centre on Vesey Street as being the place where his pastoring abilities took root. It was a small church and he had the chance to make an impact through their community outreach programmes and in Sunday school. Rev Charles Moxey, Eula Kemp, Rev W J McPhee and Bishop John Davis are amongst those who made an impact on the young Ros Davis.

Bishop Ros has served and positively impacted the church and community in multiple ways and has received numerous commendations. He holds a Doctor of Divinity, which he received on October 10, 1986; a Masters of Business Administration, and was awarded the Order of the British Empire in June, 2001. He was consecrated to the Bishopric on April 17, 1999, and made Apostolic Succession on March 16, 2005.

Not only has he made an impact in the Bahamas, but through his founding of the Bahamas Network of New Apostolic Church’s (BNNAC), he extends his reach globally, having established and giving oversight to churches across the US, Haiti, Malaysia and Singapore.

Chocolatiers of the Caribbean Bootleg history inspires a sweet venture

C

hocolate is arguably one of the greatest gifts given to us by Mother Nature. Its scientific name – Theobroma cacao – translates literally to “food of the gods”.

So it is no surprise then that this delicacy is widely sought after.

Here in the Bahamas, the Freeportbased company Bootleg Chocolates is striving to deliver these divine treats to connoisseurs throughout the islands, but of course with a special Bahamian twist.

Though its name is in direct reference to the heyday of Grand Bahama’s bootleg industry, this family-founded chocolate business started completely legally in 2010 and has now blossomed into a factory outlet and quaint retail shop located at the Port Lucaya Marketplace.

The name ‘Bootleg’ is a nod to the adventurous history of West End, Grand Bahama, during the time of Prohibition. West End was also the site of the family’s matriarchal home during that era.

The chocolate company is owned and operated by the mother-daughter team of Daphne Ormerod-Cates and Amanda Ormerod-Mullen, whose Bahamian roots can be traced back to the 1600s.

The owners said the company is fast becoming the premier provider of sought-after artisanal chocolates for high-end boutique hotels, premier events, and one-of-a-kind retailers on the islands of Abaco, Eleuthera, Exuma, Grand Bahama and New Providence. And the Bootleg brand is quickly becoming the go-to name in artisanal

At a time when the market for artisan chocolates did not exist in the Bahamas, Daphne began to study the art of making chocolate to meet the requests made by customers when she was working as a wedding consultant. Her studies eventually led her to the prestigious Callebaut’s Chocolate Academy in Montreal, Canada.

Upon returning home, she began selling one-of-a-kind products to local coffee shops, at special events and food festivals.

“We’ve seen the success of our chocolate products at some of the most exclusive hotel properties around the country and that, I think, is due largely in part to the unique Bahamian flair of our chocolate as well as the professional packaging,” said Amanda.

“Our product line currently includes ganaches with familiar Bahamian flavours like guava duff and gully wash (sky juice) and caramels such as Bahamian sea salt with hibiscus, or goat pepper with balsamic. We also carry

traditional chocolate bars, but with our unique Bahamian take on the bar; these are always a hit with the tourists who love them as gifts to take home.”

This November, and just in time for Christmas, the Ormerod ladies have created a new line – Bootleg Smuggler Rum Bites. These chocolates boast a generous helping of your favourite rums and will be produced in four distinct flavours: Gold, Spicy, Floral and Fruity.

“Christmas is a great time for us and for these Smuggler Rum Bites to come out just in time for the Christmas Gift season,” said Amanda. “We started getting asked to do Christmas gifts sets a few years ago, and now we take orders via e-mail and over the phone daily. We ship to Nassau on a weekly basis and have an associate who helps with deliveries.”

Building a ‘Dynasty’ Father-son duo exhibit at Doongalik

or his latest exhibit, emerging artist Neil Cleare Jr joined forces with his father to showcase the contrast between more traditional styles of art and modern interpretations.

The show, “Dynasty”, celebrated its opening Doongalik Studios Art Gallery last Sunday. It features 21 pieces – works from both Neil Sr and Neil Jr. “The name ‘Dynasty’ came (to me) when I realised what I was trying to build. This show featured works from both me and my father, basically giving a diverse view on both a traditional and modern style of art. It was the start of something new,” Neil Jr told Tribune Weekend.

Coming from a family of artists, it was no wonder Neil Jr found he had a natural affinity for art and a desire to make his ideas come to life with paintbrush and paper. Now, as he furthers his fine art studies in Florida, Neil Jr hopes this latest exhibit will assist in funding his education.

With his current exhibit, Neil Jr not only offers a contrast between the traditional and the modern, he is also not hesitant to shine a light on pertinent social topics with his work.

Pointing out one of the his pieces in particular, which he has titled “Balance”, Neil Jr said it is an expression of the inequality that exists between men and women.

The painting shows a man in the foreground, balancing a chair on two legs.

“In the background there is a ballerina balancing a stack of rocks balanced upon each other. The piece, which aesthetically shows dynamic balance, is actually a metaphorical representation of the imbalance of gender roles in society. The man is in the foreground and

gets applauded for doing the simple, when the woman gets no appreciation for all her hard efforts,” he said.

With “Dynasty” it is Neil Jr’s goal to have people see and experience a variety of different art styles, some of which they may not have even expected to appreciate.

“I just want persons, especially those who attended my previous show, to see how expanded my capabilities have become and continue to support my art,” he said.

His first solo show was held at Doongalik Studios in 2015. The exhibition mostly featured work produced over the course of his final year at the College of the Bahamas, including a series of functional ceramics and a collection of paintings focusing on the female figure.

But while he continues to paint and draw during his studies in Tampa, Neil Jr said he may diverge into a slightly different area in future.

In addition to wanting to become a successful graphic designer, his plan is to also animate an original comic book series he created.

“My favourite type of art is the narrative art. I would say I enjoy making comics much more than I enjoy sitting down painting. Even though the enterprise that I am trying to build right now is based on fine art and painting, I would say the art of storytelling and comics, that is more of the area I would like to sway more towards. This collection that I have right now is still ongoing and the only thing I can do is trust the process and the people that are supporting me,” he said.

BTC endorsed gospel recording artist and motivational speaker Ricardo Clarke, who took time out to read a few chapters of the popular children’s book “Charlotte’s Web”.

The fourth grade students at Thelma Gibson were excited about BTC’s visit. Manager for Public Relations Indira Collie said: “This is the second stop of our Limitless Learning School Tour. Thelma Gibson Primary is one of our adopted schools, and this was a great chance for us BTC brand ambassador Ricardo Clarke reads to Ricardo and our other brand to fourth grade students at Thelma Gibson ambassadors to get involved in our Primary. community initiatives.”

Principal of Eva Hilton Jermaine Butler thanked BTC noting, “This a very substantive donation. This will also alleviate the costs for parentsintermsofbooks,andwe’vealready seen that students with tablets are better behaved and more motivated. To have companies like BTC come to assist us is worth its weight in gold!”

Mr Butler also said that BTC’s donation will help Eva Hilton to complete a dream intended to allow students to learn in an atmosphere that is rich in technology.

“This is something that they’re used to and are motivated by. We’re looking to become the first primary school that is fully equipped with tablets for every student in every class,” he added.

Manager for Public Relations at BTC Indira Collie said: “This is another blue letter day here for us at BTC. Today we were able to make another investment in the future of hundreds of the nation’s youth. Eva Hilton has been our adopted school for over two decades and we are happy to support this initiative, providing students with the best inclassresourcestoassistwiththeireducation.”

The school intends to continue to upgrade its facilities on an annual basis to prepare our little ones for a bright future in a modern society.

INSPIRING ACHIEVEMENTS WITH a balloon release, BTC officially launched its “Inspire” programme. The new online programme recognises the accomplishments and achievements of BTC team members. In addition to the balloon release commemorating this special occasion, BTC also hosted team events at each of its locations nationwide.

The Inspire programme is CWC’s Employee Recognition programme and employees in all of the CWC businesses in the US, the Bahamas, Caribbean, Panama and the Seychelles can participate. Colleagues throughout the CWC subsidiaries throughout the world are able to see the accolades and accomplishments that BTC team members are being recognised for and BTC’s employees can see what nominated colleagues in

T’S that time of year again. Yes, it’s the season to be jolly. And how better to accomplish this than at the Bahamas National Trust’s Jollification at the Retreat Garden on Village Road this weekend.

Deemed the “ultimate Christmas shopping experience”, Jollification festivities begin today for BNT members,

and for the general public on Saturday at 11pm, continuing until Sunday 5pm.

In past years, the BNT has welcomed large crowds over the course of the two days; from couples to friends, teens and entire families.

They all enjoy jovial activities and services, including some of the finest arts and crafts in the Bahamas, jewellery and gift items, a variety of food, and tastings of holiday spirits provided

by Bristol Wines and Spirits and the Bahamian Brewery in the Mistletoe Lounge.

Highlights this year will also include popular attractions such as the Jolly Market, which features homemade jams and jellies, cakes, jewellery, chocolates and straw designs from a number of artisans; a plant area, raffles, and the children’s craft area.

Food options will include conch fritters available from The Batter Girls, gyros from the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Philippine Delights, Corn Diggity Dogs, Dino’s Gourmet

Conch Salad, the East Nassau Rotary hamburger van, and soft drinks provided by Caribbean Bottling.

“Jollification provides an opportunity for people to reconnect in a festive holiday atmosphere. Many of our vendors have participated for several years and have a following. The garden setting is unique where can you shop, entertain your kids, have a great lunch and sip a holiday cocktail before you go home. It is also a terrific event to begin your Christmas shopping,” said Lynn Gape, BNT deputy executive director.

What began as a small arts and crafts festival with a focus on plant sales, has blossomed into so much more over the years, she said.

“It was the idea of the Eleanor Higgs, former Retreat committee chair, who wanted an event to support the Garden and maintenance of the palm collection. I have been involved with the event since its inception. It feels great to come this far, especially since all of the funds are used to support the

Retreat Garden, one of four National Parks on New Providence. We are embarking on plans, an upgrade to the Retreat’s infrastructure to enhance our visitor experience at the Garden. Funds raised this year are very important so that we can move these plans forward.”

A new addition this year will be the partnership with Queen’s College, which is providing additional space for Jollification vendors adjacent to the school’s parking lot.

“We also really want to highlight the contribution of Commonwealth Bank as a sponsor. Their staff volunteers make running the event so much easier by their participation. Also, we are very pleased to have the team from the Elbow Cay Lighthouse, Hope Town, participating, as well as BTC, who has joined the event as a sponsor,” said Lynn.

Tickets for this weekend’s Jollification are $5 for BNT members and $10 for the general public. Children ages five to 17 are $3.

Partying from sundown to sunup Sundance Festival celebrates threeday party

T

here was never a dull moment last weekend, as Bahamians came together with international guests to party, dance, drink and enjoy fun activities during the three-day Sundance Festival.

This was the first time that the annual Pupstar Entertainment event expanded to a weekend-long celebration, and organisers said it worked out “exceptionally well”.

Hundreds of Bahamians patronised the festivities for three days, first at the Sundance and Suits Cooler Fete on board the Yellow Bird on Friday, then the Sundance Nirvana Beach Festival on Saturday, and a poolside Boozy Brunch at the Harbourfront Lounge on Sunday.

All events featured the sounds of local and international deejays, including DJ Mayday, DJ Bravo, Dr Esan and DJ Back to Basics.

A new feature also highlighted performances by Bahamian talent such as Bodine, Wendi Lewis, MDeez, and Judah Tha Lion, hosted by Hot 91’s own Triz.

“We were extremely pleased with this year’s attendance number, both local

and international.

There were the faces that we know and love and also a lot new faces. We were happy to host the new influx of visitors from New York City in particular who brought a higher level of energy to the weekend,” said Pupstar’s president, Alicia “Puppy” Robinson.

The idea was to offer special entertainment non-stop for three days straight. Setting the tone for the rest of the weekend was the high-energy performance by DJ Back to Basics at the first event, the fete cruise.

Then the live performances by Bodine, Wendi Lewis and Judah Tha Lion took it to the next level on Saturday for a dynamic beach party.

Closing out the weekend was an interactive brunch on Sunday. On top of the gorgeous views provided by the Harbourfront Lounge, guests got the chance to mix and mingle with the featured performers.

“We couldn’t be happier with the decision to expand and we are already planning for weekend 2018. More music, more colour, more activities and more overall vibes will be brought to Sundance 2018. November can’t come soon enough,” said Ms Robinson.

“With an event of this nature, it is expected to have growth and expansion every year, whether it be a minor change or a major change. Execution for this year was exceptionally smooth and we are comfortable in knowing we have designed a great product.”

I quite simply hate it.”

Alesha says: “La La has really been killing it lately on the red carpet. I like her look here, but I personally would have worn the dress in a darker colour, unless the theme was an all white winter wonderland. Overall, she still looks gorgeous.”

‘Boogie Nights’ exceeds expectations

HERE were many disco queens and even more afros bopping around at the Rotary Club of South East Nassau’s “Boogie Nights”

fundraiser.

Hundreds of guests made their way to Crush Atlantis last weekend to relive the some the best nights had at Nassau’s most iconic clubs during from the 1970s and 80, including The Cat and Fiddle, Le Peon, Waterloo, Pastiche, Silver Slipper and the Family Island Lounge.

The aim of the event was to offer a fun blast from the past party experience while also giving patrons an opportunity to support the work of Rotary Club of South East Nassau.

“The turnout was excellent. Up to that night people were scrambling and

calling around for tickets so we knew it would be a successful event, but it was still mind-blowing. It was safe and fun.

There were lots of professionals from all vocations and people of all ages. It was a great time for all who attended,” said club director Cerys Howells.

And the crowd also did their best to keep in line with the party’s theme.

“Even though it was optional, patrons definitely indulged. People came dressed in outfits from the 70s, 80s and 90s,” said Ms Howells.

Crush presented the ideal venue for “Boogie Nights” given its 14,000 square-foot space that boasts an internet lounge complete with multi-touch computers, two pool tables, an air hockey table, two foosball tables and 10 private cabanas.

Ms Howell believes it was the venue that made the event a huge hit among mature revellers.

“Club Crush is an amazing location.

The club is modern and hip. There were pool and foosball tables as well as an instant photo booth. It truly felt like you were in Las Vegas,” she said.

“Our fundraising director Anna DeGregory and President Godfrey really hit the nail on the head with this event. The mature crowd really enjoyed reliving those decades. Reviews are still coming in about the fun, and especially about the venue. We’ve been told it was the best time a lot of them had in a long time, hanging out with peers they haven’t seen in ages and dancing the night away to music that evoked nostalgic memories. We also surpassed our financial goal and could not have done so without our many sponsors and patrons.”

The Rotary Club of South East Nassau provides service to the local community in the areas of basic education and literacy; economic and community development, disease prevention and treatment; peace and conflict prevention/resolution; vocational service, and maternal and child health.

Not even Wonder Woman can save ‘Justice League’ JUSTICE LEAGUE RUNNING TIME: 121 MINS

I

t’s hard not to feel a little bad for the DC Comics films at this point.

They have the unenviable task having to form an identity in the shadows of the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which are usually good and rarely unwatchable, and the continued glow of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, which are seeming more and more like transcendent anomalies as we get deeper into this never-ending cycle of super humans crowding our multiplexes. DC got off to a rocky start and then Patty Jenkins went and made a very good “Wonder Woman.”

And yet somehow it is no surprise that “Justice League “ tips the balances back in the wrong direction. Although marginally better than “Batman v Superman” and “Suicide Squad,” director Zack Snyder’s latest is still a profound mess of maudlin muscles, incoherent action and jaw-droppingly awful CGI. It is big, loud, awful to look at and oh-so-dumb.

With Superman (Henry Cavill) dead, and the world facing yet another devastating threat (yawn) this time at the hands of some ancient creature named Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds) and his army of giant alien mosquitoes, which look like Saturday morning Power Rangers villains, Batman/Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman/Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) go in search of some new recruits: Barry Allen/The Flash (Ezra Miller), a quippy “kid” who’s excited to join the team; Arthur Curry/Aquaman (Jason Momoa) who talks like a surfer bro and looks like a Nordic bodybuilder with ombre locks

and fishermen’s knits; And Victor Stone/ Cyborg (Ray Fisher), who is still in the sulky “why me” phase of his superhero career.

There are some good moments, thanks in large part to the addition of Miller, whose quick, self-deprecating humour (likely the result of Joss Whedon’s script and reshoot work) and general liveliness steals scenes away from his brawnier and moodier counterparts.

But everything else about “Justice League” feels laboured, from a preposterous underwater battle that comes out of nowhere and the camaraderie between the superheroes that never clicks into place, to Batman’s lumbering gait (does the batsuit weigh 300 pounds?) and Superman’s mouth which

looks a little...off. It’s likely because the production had to digitally remove Cavill’s “Mission: Impossible 6” moustache for re-shoots. After experiencing this unnaturally altered face on the big screen, it seems like the worst possible compromise.

And never has it been so obvious that the character of Wonder Woman is now being presented through a man’s eyes.

Snyder chooses on multiple occasions to let the shot linger on Gadot’s figure, whether panning up her legs unnecessarily to get to a normal scene of dialogue or making sure that the camera is there to capture the moment when her skirt flies up in an action sequence. It is, quite frankly, gross and a wildly disappointing departure from what Patty Jenkins was able to accomplish with the character earlier this year.

“Justice League” feels like a bunch of disconnected moments with no governing theory behind it other than the fact that this movie has to come at this time to introduce audiences to characters whose stand-alone movies have already been promised to shareholders.

It’s not too late to re-think this whole thing and start over. Just keep Gadot around, please.

Planting and harvesting spices in the Bahamas requires patience, but Jack Hardy explains how it can be done when it comes to coriander, allspice, ginger and more.

H

erbs are mostly the leaves and flowers of certain aromatic plants while spices are mostly seeds.

Spices can also be bark, rind, zest, aril, root, tuber or rhizome, and in the case of vanilla, the whole orchid pod. Although herbs seem to be fairly equally shared between temperate and warm climates, the preponderance of spices is tropical. That means there are spices we can grow ourselves in our own back yards.

If you grow the herb cilantro you are also producing the spice coriander, the seeds of cilantro. Coriander seeds are easy to harvest and dry and provide the base for home-made curry powder.

Probably the most common spice tree grown in the Bahamas is allspice (Pimenta officinalis), a native of Central America and the Caribbean, associated mostly with Jamaica. The last great matinée idol

Sir Christopher Ondaatje marvels at the distinguished acting career of the award-winning Scottish actor who immortalised the role of James Bond in spy movies.

L

ong before James Bond, and long before Sir Sean Connery, there was a tiny baby “Tommy” Connery born to Joe Connery, a truck driver, and Euphemia, a laundress, on August 25, 1930, in Fountainbridge, Scotland.

The Connerys were really poor, and they lived in a neighbourhood where the stench from the local rubber mill and brewery was known as “the street of a thousand smells”. Their home was a tworoom flat where the baby slept in a cupboard drawer because they didn’t have the money to buy a crib.

Joe Connery brought home only a few shillings a week and those were often spent on whisky and gambling. Tommy grew up on the streets of Fountainbridge where the local gangs called him “Big Tam” because of his size and his eventual

ability to dominate his playmates.

He went to the local Tollcross elementary school and was clever and quick, grasping the fundamentals of mathematics, reading avidly and dreaming up fantastic stories of Martians and madmen. Even as a young boy he loved going to films and often skipped school to go to Blue Halls, the local movie house, to watch the pictures.

When Tommy was eight years old his brother Neil was born, and he delighted in the role of big brother. The boys were inseparable and they fished in the local canal using their mother’s stockings for fishing line. Together the brothers often skipped school and mixed with some rough boys from the wrong side of the tracks.

Tommy Connery left school when he was 13 years old to work for the local dairy, St Cuthbert’s

Co-operative Society, as a milkman.

It was his first job. He grew quickly and was 6’ʹ2”ʺ by the time he was 18. His full name was Thomas Sean Connery and, apart from being called Tommy, he was also called Sean long before he was an actor.

When he was young he had an Irish friend named Séamus and those who knew them both had decided to call Connery by his middle name whenever both were present. The name stuck. Three years later he joined the Royal Navy, and received two tattoos on his arm. He still has them today: “MUM AND DAD” and “SCOTLAND FOREVER”. Although he signed on for seven years he was released after three years because of a duodenal ulcer. He returned to his job for St Cuthbert’s Co-operative Society, then got work as a lorry driver, a lifeguard, a labourer, an artist’s

He saved money to become a member of the Dunedin Weightlifting Club – “not so much to be fit, but to look good for the girls”. From 1951 he trained seriously with a gym instructor from the British Army. His gym mates nominated him for the Mr Universe contest. In 1953, he travelled nine hours to get to London where the competitions were being held. He introduced himself as “Mr Scotland”, and was chosen third in the tall men’s division and given a medal.

Connery was a keen footballer and played for Bonnyrigg Rose in his younger days, where he was offered a trial with East Fife. In a football match against a local team that Matt Busby, manager of Manchester United, happened to be scouting, Busby offered Connery a contract worth £25 a week and he was tempted to accept.

“I realised that a top-class footballer could be over the hill

by the age of 30, and I was already 23. I decided to become an actor and it turned out to be one of my more intelligent moves.”

While in London at the Mr Universe contest, and after receiving his medal, a local casting director liked the look of the tall Scottish kid and asked him to join the chorus of “South Pacific” – a new musical

by Rodgers and Hammerstein playing on Drury Lane in London’s theatre district.

“I didn’t have a voice, couldn’t dance. But I could look good standing there.”

One rehearsal was all it took for Connery to decide to gamble everything on making acting his full time career. It was then that he chose the stage name Sean Connery.

Sean Connery was thus listed as a chorus member in the 1953 South Pacific programme. By the time the production reached Edinburgh he had been given the part of Marine Corporal Hamilton Steeves and was understudying two of the juvenile leads. His salary was raised from £12 to £14-10s a week.

The following year, returning to Edinburgh, Connery was promoted to the featured role of Lieutenant Buzz Adams. In Edinburgh, Connery was targeted by the notorious Valdor gang, one of the most ruthless in the city. He was followed by six gang members to a 15-foot high balcony at the Palais de Danse. There Connery launched an attack single-handedly against the gang members, grabbing one by the throat and another by the biceps and cracking their heads together. From then on he was treated with great respect by the gang and gained a reputation as a tough character.

Connery also liked the reputation of being a rugged ladies man, but developed a serious interest in the

theatre through the American actor Robert Henderson who lent him copies of the Henrik Ibsen works Hedda Gabler, “The Wild Drunk” and “When We Dead Awaken”, and gave him the works of Marcel Proust, Leo Tolstoy, Ivan Turgenev, George Bernard Shaw, James Joyce and William Shakespeare to digest. In addition Henderson urged him to take elocution lessons and got him parts at the Maida Vale Theatre in London.

He began pursuing a career in film only after he was cast as an extra in the Herbert Wilcox 1954 musical Lilacs in the Spring with Anna Neagle. He secured several bit parts as an extra but was constantly struggling to make ends meet. He was reduced to being a parttime babysitter for journalist Peter Noble and his actress wife Mary Noble. While there he met Shelley Winters who later said that Connery was one of the most charming Scotsmen she had ever met.

She spent many evenings drinking beer with him.

At about this time Connery’s American actor friend Robert Henderson got him a job for £6 a week at the Q Theatre Production of Agatha Christie’s “Witness for the Prosecution”.

This role was followed by a number of minor stage parts until Canadian director Alvin Rakoff gave him multiple roles in “The Condemned”, shot on location in Dover, Kent. In 1956, he appeared in the theatrical production of “Epitaph”, and played a minor role as a hoodlum in the “Ladies of the Manor” episode of the BBC TV series “Dixon of Dock Green”. He also had small TV parts in “Sailor of Fortune” and “The Jack Benny Program”.

Things turned around somewhat in 1957. He hired Richard Hatton as his agent – who got him the role of Spike, a minor gangster in Montgomery Tully’s “No Road Back”. Then Rakoff gave him his first chance of a leading role as Mountain McLintock in the BBC TV’s “Requiem for a Heavyweight”. He also played a rogue lorry driver in Cy

Endfield’s “Hell Drivers” (1957) and in the Terence Young MGM picture “Action of the Tiger”. Terence Young was to have a great influence on Connery’s movie career a few years later when he was given the James Bond part in 1962. He also got another minor role in Gerald Thomas’s “Time Lock” (1957). He was beginning to get noticed.

1957 was also the year that he met the Australian actress Diane Cilento while filming a show for Britain’s ATV Playhouse. They were immediately attracted to each other, although Cilento was married at the time. Connery would eventually marry her in 1962, and they had a son Jason who later followed his father into an acting career. But the marriage did not last. They were divorced in 1973 and Cilento returned to Queensland, Australia.

Connery was given a major role in the melodrama “Another Time, Another Place” (1958) as a British reporter named Mark Trevor caught in a love affair opposite Lana Turner and Barry Sullivan.

During the filming, Lana Turner’s possessive gangster boyfriend, Johnny Stompanato, believing she was having an affair with Connery, stormed onto the set and pointed a gun at Connery, only to have Connery disarm him and knock him flat on his back. Stompanato was banned from the set, but Connery had to lie low for a while after receiving threats from men linked to Stompanato’s boss Mickey Cohen.

In 1960, Connery’s career in movies began to take off. He landed a leading part in Robert Stevenson’s Walt Disney Productions film “Darby O’Gill and the Little People” – a film about a wily Irishman Sean Connery and his battle of wits during his time with leprechauns. Janet Munro was Sean Connery’s co-star in one of his first big roles in the 1959 film “Darby O’Gill and the Little People”.

Producers Harry Saltzman and Albert Broccoli cast him as the lead in a spy movie based on one of a series of Ian Fleming’s novels. James Bond was born.

Connery was reluctant to commit to a film series but was advised that if the films succeeded, his career would greatly benefit. Connery’s selection for the role of James Bond owed a lot to Dana Broccoli, the wife of producer Albert Broccoli, who convinced her husband that Connery was the right man.

Ian Fleming too was against Connery’s casting, saying: “He’s not what I envisioned of James Bond’s looks. I’m looking for a Commander Bond – not an overgrown stunt man.” He criticised Sean Connery as being unrefined. However, Blanche Blackwell, one of Fleming’s girlfriends, told him that Connery had the right sexual charisma. Fleming changed his mind after the first film premiere.

Connery played secret agent 007 in the first five Bond films: “Dr No” (1962), “From Russia with Love” (1963), “Goldfinger” (1964), “Thunderball” (1965), and “You Only Live Twice” (1967) – then appeared again in “Diamonds Are Forever” (1971) and “Never Say Never Again” (1983). All seven films were enormously successful and Connery was selected as the third greatest hero in cinema history by the American Film Institute.

Connery’s portrayal of James Bond owes a great deal to the British director Terence Young who directed the first two of the James Bond films, “Dr No” (1962) and “From Russia with Love” (1963), and then “Thunderball” in 1965.

Young was public school educated and had read Oriental History at St Catherine’s College, Cambridge. He was commissioned in the Irish Guards and was a tank commander during World War II, participating in Arnhem in the Netherlands. Young was born in 1915, so in 1962, when “Dr No” was being made, he was 47 years old and 15 years older than Sean Connery. His upbringing too was very different to Connery’s. Young knew what he was doing and knew

exactly what sort of a person Fleming had in mind to play the part of James Bond. Instead, he was given the job of directing a tall goodlooking Scot who had none of the finer mannerisms expected of him, but who exuded sexual charisma.

Young made a crucial contribution to “Dr No”, not least with the performance of Connery, whose portrayal of Bond owes much to Young’s tutelage. Young helped polish the actor while using his physical grace and presence for the action scenes. Lois Maxwell, who played the part of Miss Moneypenny, related that “Terence (Young) took Sean under his wing.

He took him to dinner, showed him how to walk, how to talk, even how to eat.” The tutoring was successful. Young gave Connery his polish and thereafter the actor became one of the greatest male sex symbols of film there has ever been – receiving thousands of fan letters a week. Connery remembered what Young had taught him and with each new part his charm and confidence grew.

Connery played the part of the sly, sexy and confident British agent who had questionable scruples with increasing conviction. He became the embodiment of the 007 spy and was an immediate superstar. He got other leading parts too.

After and during the success of the Bond films he appeared in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Marnie” (1964), “The Hill” (1965), “Murder on the Orient Express” (1974), “The Man Who Would be King” (1975), “The Wind and the Lion” (1975), “Time Bandits” (1981), “Highlander” (1986), “The Name of the Rose” (1986), “The Untouchables” (1987) – which earned him an Oscar for best supporting role – “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” (1989), “The Hunt for Red October” (1990), “Rising Sun” (1993), “The Rock” (1996), “Finding Forrester” (2000), and “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” (2003).

Sean Connery married the French-Moroccan artist Micheline Roquebrune in 1975. They had met at a golf tournament in Morocco, a sport they both loved. By this time he had made six Bond pictures and, although Bond made him a star, he eventually grew tired of the role and the pressure the franchise put on him. Michael Caine,

his friend and co-star in “The Man Who Would be King”, said:

“If you were his friend in those early days you didn’t raise the subject of Bond. He was, and is, a much better actor than just playing James Bond.”

He began to shrink from the spotlight, moving his new wife and her three children to mansions first in England, and then to Marbella, Spain. It would be more than a decade before he reluctantly agreed to reprise his Bond role for the seventh and last time in the 1983 “Never Say Never Again” – a title suggested by his wife Micheline. For this he was paid a salary of several million dollars – a far cry from the reported $16,000 he earned for “Dr No”.

In Marbella he played golf daily when not filming. For 20 years (from 1979), he owned the Domaine de Terre Blanche in the South of France, where he planned to build his dream golf course on the 266 acres of land, but the dream was not to be realised until he sold the property to German billionaire Dietmar Hopp in 1999.

By then the Connerys, fed up with disagreements with the local press, had moved to Nassau in the Bahamas, becoming members of the exclusive Lyford Cay Club in 1982 and buying a charming but not ostentatious house on the golf course where they now live.

“I have retired for good. It’s been a bit rough since Christmas but I’m perfectly OK and I feel well. In fact I’m working on a history book...I get asked the (retirement) question so often, I thought it best to make an announcement. I thought long and hard about it and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement it would have been an Indiana Jones film. I love working with Steven Spielberg and George (Lucas), and it goes without saying that it is an honour to have Harrison (Ford) as my son. But in the end, retirement is just too damned much fun.”

Connery continued to make films until he retired officially in March 2006.

Sean Connery’s incredible film career has been quite remarkable because of its variety. He has Continued on page 24

Continued from page 23 been given many honours. In 1998, he received the BAFTA Academy Fellowship Award; and in 2000 he received a Crystal Globe for outstanding contribution to world cinema. In 1989, when he was almost 60 years old, he was named People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive”, and in 1999 received a Kennedy Centre Honour for Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2000, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in an hour-long investiture at Edinburgh’s Holyrood Palace, despite his active national support for the separatist Scottish National Party, and in 2006 he received the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Looking back on Sean Connery’s remarkable film career there are some interesting and sometimes bizarre comments that experts have made about his achievements.

“Goldfinger” (1964) is arguably the most entertaining of Connery’s seven Bond films where 007 investigates a gold magnate’s smuggling and uncovers a plot to contaminate the Fort Knox Gold Reserve.

He has almost been killed twice while making Bond films: In 1963, while filming the helicopter chase in “From Russia With Love”, he was almost decapitated when the inexperienced helicopter pilot flew too close to him. Then during the filming of “Thunderball” in the Bahamas in 1965, in the sequence with the sharks in Emilio Largo’s pool, Connery insisted that a plexiglass partition be made inside the pool.

But this was not a fixed structure and one of the sharks managed to pass through it, almost getting to Connery as he climbed hurriedly from the pool.

This near disaster was captured on the final film sequence. During the filming of “Marnie” (1964), Alfred Hitchcock had cast “the sexiest man alive” to play opposite Tippi Hedren – supposed to play a frigid woman thief in the film.

She asked Hitchcock how she could possibly play such a role when the iciest of women would melt in Connery’s presence. Hitchcock told her, “It’s called acting, my dear.” He then ordered Connery not to touch her.

“The Hill”, made in 1965, is one of Connery’s best films. In a North African military prison during World War II, five new prisoners struggle to survive in the face of brutal punishment and sadistic guards. Connery’s performance is magnificent.

Under John Huston’s direction of Rudyard Kipling’s novella “The Man Who Would be King” (1975), both Connery and Michael Caine give superb performances as a pair of British colonialists who resign from the army planning to make the faraway land of Kafiristan their own kingdom where no white man has set foot since Alexander the Great. Marvellous entertainment. The following year Connery played an ageing Robin Hood opposite Audrey Hepburn in “Robin and Marian”. It is a touching film where Connery and Hepburn (after her eight year absence from films) make the film work because of the chemis-

try between them. They seem to have arrived at a tacit understanding about their characters and they marvellously project two complex and tender people who have acquired grace and wisdom after a 20-year separation.

Most of Connery’s successes in the next decade were as part of ensemble casts in films like “Murder on the Orient Express” (1974) and “A Bridge Too Far” (1977) starring Dirk Bogarde and Laurence Olivier.

Connery won a BAFTA award for his performance in “The Name of the Rose” in 1986, and in “Highlander” he showed his ability to play older mentors to younger leads.

“The Untouchables” in 1987 earned Connery an Oscar for best supporting actor by playing a grizzled but honourable cop, and his subsequent box-office hits included “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” (1989), “The Hunt for

Red October” (1990), and “The Russia House” (1990).

“The Rock” (1996) was one of Connery’s favourite and highest paid films – a prison action-adventure. He then played a cat burglar in the love story/ thriller “Entrapment” (1999) which costarred Catherine Zeta-Jones despite a 40-year difference between their ages, and a starring role in Gus Van Sant’s “Finding Forrester” (2000) where a young prodigy finds a mentor – a reclusive author – played by Connery.

It was another of his great sensitive performances.

The real Nassau Forgotten facts Paul C Aranha

f you are more than 1½ miles away from The Tribune’s office on Shirley Street, you are not in Nassau. You might not even be on New Providence.

Bahamians, including myself, are wont to refer to the entire island of New Providence as Nassau, but this is wrong.

The island was first called Providence, that name being changed to New Providence to distinguish it from another place called Providence, and it had no towns, no villages – until Charles Town was settled and named, of course, after the King of England.

The centre of Charles Town was the general area where the British Colonial Hotel now stands, and after William of Orange became King William III, the name of our capital was changed to Nassau.

Nassau became a city through a resolution in the House of Assembly, after the Anglican Church created a see, appointed a bishop and made Christ Church a cathedral.

The boundaries of the City of Nassau enclosed a very small area – approximately half a mile from east to west and one quarter of a mile from north to south. The city was described as bounded on the north by the sea, on the south by Hill Street (which became East Hill Street and West Hill Street), on the east by East Street and on the west by West Street. These boundaries remained unchanged for many years.

Recently, the Department of Lands and Surveys told me that the modern boundaries are the sea (north), Wulff Road (south), Mackey Street (east) and Nassau Street (west). Since Nassau Street does not join Wulff Road, I was left to suppose that Poinciana Drive might be considered an extension of Wulff Road.

When one buys a lot on Mackey Street, one’s title deeds describe that property as

bounded on the east by Mackey Street, which does not give one any title to the street. Similarly, the streets bounding the City of Nassau are not in Nassau, nor are the buildings on the other side of those boundary roads.

The University of the Bahamas is in New Providence, as is the Department of Archives, Mackey Street and TyreFlex Star Motors on Wulff Road. Potter’s

More on pets and Christmas

L

ast week I spoke about pets and the difficulties they can face during the festivities of Thanksgiving and Christmas.

They can be quickly forgotten, and this can cause uncharacteristic behaviour.

We also touched on the horrors of fireworks for some dogs who turn to jelly and completely panic and quiver; some disappearing into the night only to get run over.

Heck of a way to start 2018.

After I wrote my article I got to thinking about a few things I should have put into my article last week: one of the best parts of Christmas is wrapping the gifts – paper, Scotch tape, ribbons, red berries, gift tags et cetera – fine for us to be dealing with, but if left unattended, your dog might try digesting some of the Christmas wrapping paper, or random bits and pieces and become ill. Always remember to put things away or close the door while we are thinking about it. That is what we would do if there were a small child in the house wouldn’t we?

We need to remember that our delightful and loving furry friend is really just that; a furry child who will not grow up to where he can make his own sandwich. Our dog is dependent on us for practically everything, and things that are totally normal for us, because we understand them, can be very scary to those furry kids. And when our furry kids are freaked out they do things devoid of logic.

You must not get cross with them if they do unusual and silly things if the house is turned upside down for the holidays. That is their way of trying to figure out what to do. I know I said this all last week, but it is so unbelievably important that I have to repeat myself, these furry kids need all the reassurance they can get and as much normalcy that you can give.

Also, I wish to add a few words about getting a puppy or kitten for the kids for Christmas. Have you really thought this out before you commit to getting a living,

Make sure to secure ribbons, wrapping paper and Scotch tape so that your pet does not accidentally digest them.

If you know that you really want to get a pet, then before Christmas Day you must be sure to have everything this pup or kitten, grown dog or cat will need. Do not bring them into the house without a bed, water and food bowls, toys and a quiet spot. All animals need a quiet spot that they can retire to and not be bothered. They may not choose to use it much but it should always be available for them.

You need to decide if Christmas Day is actually the right day to introduce Rover or Fluffy into the house; all the excitement and food, people in and out, open gates, “joyous” guests who just might have imbibed a bit more than wise…

Be sure you and your new pet will be able to cope with all that excitement and commotion.

We at the Bahamas Humane Society spend weeks picking up lost pets, and find many dead on the road. They do not deserve that kind of treatment.

And whilst I am at it, the “house dogs” that everybody persists on calling small dogs versus the potcakes or larger dogs that are referred to as a “yard dogs” …

Why? They are both, as far as I know, dogs. One eats more than the other, but the “house” and “yard” dog both crave affection in the same way; they both need care and consideration. And why just because they are big can’t they come into the house? Try telling that to my beloved Chiefie, a potcake who lies on the sofa in my study while I am writing this. He sleeps beside me with his bed up against my bedside, and he always has one ear on guard for intruders. I sleep soundly with my potcake protection plan. All our five dogs are big, and they are all house dogs.

This Christmas, make a difference in the life of an animal: please drop off some food or food stamps to the shelter in Chippingham. Help a lonely, frightened stray by feeding and teaching it not to be afraid of humans. Give it a home even, and open up your heart to unconditional love as you may have never known before. No space for “bah humbug” this year; 2018 needs to be the year of compassion, understanding and giving to God’s creatures and also to each other. One Bahamas means every living thing in this country, not just those people and animals you choose to like. Today is the time to plan for our Christmas giving and sharing.
