Dames promises to act if laws broken but ‘no evidence yet’ By AVA TURNQUEST Tribune Chief Reporter aturnquest@tribunemedia.net NATIONAL Security Minister Marvin Dames told reporters yesterday the Federal Bureau of Investigation is expected to fully brief Police Commissioner Anthony Ferguson this week on the findings of its two-year undercover investigation into an alleged visa fraud at its Nassau Embassy. He said local law enforcement will then make a determination on whether any Bahamian laws were

broken, and take the necessary measures. “We have had some initial discussions with the US,” Mr Dames said before heading into a Cabinet meeting. “The FBI is now working in consultation with the Royal Bahamas Police Force, who will receive a further briefing on the information they (the FBI) may have at their disposal, and we will determine from that information whether any laws in The Bahamas have been broken.” SEE PAGE FIVE

MINNIS’ PRAYERS FOR MISSING PILOT’S FAMILY

PRIME Minister Dr Hubert Minnis yesterday extended his prayers to the family of Byron Ferguson, the pilot whose plane crashed into the waters of Nirvana Beach on Thursday night. Dr Minnis encouraged the family to always “live with hope” as the search for the missing pilot and aircraft continues. However, he said he could not comment on the family’s

critiques that relatives are dissatisfied with the way officials have conducted the search and rescue efforts for Mr Ferguson, as the investigation is continuing. Bahamas Air Accident Investigation Department Operations Investigator Kendal Dorsett Jr also confirmed yesterday evening that, contrary to previous reports from officials, Mr Ferguson did file a flight plan before leaving West Palm Beach airport for Nassau on Thursday. VICTIM WAS TRYING TO ESCAPE VIOLENCE

THE family of the man fatally shot while walking on Watlins Street is reeling after his death, with one relative saying 19-yearold Stantavio Ramsey had recently moved out of a violent area to make something of his life. According to police reports, shortly after 5pm

on Monday, a man was walking on Watlins Street off Andros Avenue when he was approached by a male with a firearm who opened fire before running away. The victim was shot and transported to the hospital by paramedics but later died. SEE PAGE SEVEN

SANDS - WE’LL MAKE FAIR OFFER TO DOCTORS BY RIEL MAJOR

HEALTH Minister Dr Duane Sands said yesterday the government is negotiating in good faith to present a reasonable and fair offer to public health physicians who have threatened industrial action. Calling the situation “disappointing”, Dr Sands said it would be a tragedy

if patients find themselves in a situation where central care is withdrawn. When he was asked about the doctors’ threat yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis said he believed the dispute stemmed from communication issues, stressing that to a doctor, patient care is paramount. SEE PAGE 10

Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt was forced to secure the new venue after fielding submissions from lead Crown attorney Edward Jenkins, QC, that proceeding in her courtroom would be “unfeasible” and that he would struggle to concentrate on the trial because of the heat and humidity.
