GETTING INTO THE GUTTER

If you own a home, one of the things you should look into is the gutter. That’s right! Often overlooked, the gutter has several important functions. • Gutters divert water away from the home. Without them, rain that falls on the roof will travel to the border of the foundation. The runoff can be forceful and cause ground erosion. If the foundation becomes saturated, it can settle and crack. • Homes with crawlspace between the floor and the ground are particularly vulnerable. An increase in humidity can lead to wood rot and mold. • Without gutters, wind will drive the run-off along the exterior walls, which can result in mildew, discol-

ouration and peeling – not to mention dirt and muck kicked up when the water hits the ground with force. • Not many homes in the islands have basements, but for those who may have one, the run-off can penetrate cracks and even root clogged drains.

Think how rain pummels your roof during a hurricane or tropical downpour. Without a gutter to divert the run-off, the deluge will cascade down exterior walls and seep into any cracks, weakening the walls. While it can be destructive, rainwater also is precious. It can be diverted to cisterns for irrigation purposes, washing cars and dogs and so on. So gutters are very important to a home.

MAINTENANCE It’s critical that gutters are maintained and kept free of debris and downspouts are kept in good working order. Gutters should be cleaned at least twice a year - before hurricane season and after any storm to get rid of all the debris blown into them. The weight of the debris may cause gutters to sag. When gutters are clogged, the water has nowhere to go and it will begin to collect on your roof. Left long enough, this may contribute to surface decay and fungi. Weakened shingles can result in leaks. Water seeping into a home can result in mold. So don’t forget to maintain your gutters. Consider using gutter guards can help provide protection.

MORINGA MIRACLE TREE?

WITH-OUT trying in the past year or two you have likely repeatedly heard persons raving about this Moringa tree and all its benefits. Or maybe like me you have been asked many times where to purchase one from. Well for sometime I paid the hype very little attention as it reminded me of the Noonie fever that seemed to grip Bahamians some years ago. Where in Noonie was suddenly the cure all for any and all that may ail you. Well in time the temperature broke and left behind many a abandon Noonie bush relegated to being no more than a nuance tree baring a foul fruit. But is Moringa just another over-night sensation or is truly A “Miracle tree” and worthy of all the high praise that is rained down upon it. Well first a little back ground. Moringa Oleifera comes from India, but it is also found in Thailand, the Philippines, Africa, and Taiwan. It resembles horseradish, and is often compared to it for the taste. It has a spicy taste to it if you taste the wood directly, which has led it to have a nickname of “Horseradish tree”. Moringa is eaten in many forms in a broth or very much like mushrooms. It can be drink as a tea and it is very often just picked and the leaves eaten. But yet still why, whats all the hoopla about? The only negative reports that i can summaries as regards Moringa is the lack of what can be called a “comprehensive medical study” of the benefits. There are many many personal recommendations and testimonies however that may be the only short fall to the information surrounding this seeming natural phenomenon. Caring for your Moringa tree: First remember that Moringa can grow to 20-30 feet tall, so you will need some space preferable away from any structure. Moringa loves lots of sun warmth and water. However it is a extremely versatile tree that adapts well to many different environments and can be grown and maintained in pots also. Just find a big deep one I would suggest. Moringa does best in more sandy soil it seems to dislike clay wet soils. Your plant will likely grow very quickly so to get the maximum benefit from it you many want to prune it to keep it at a height that allows you to reach the seeds and leaves from which most of its nutrient benefits are generally harvested.
