CELEBRITIES WHO BOLDLY CONFESS THEIR FAITH By ALESHA CADET Tribune FEATURES REPORTER acadet@tribunemedia.net

W

HILE there are some celebrities who choose to keep their religious beliefs private, there are others that boldly confess their faith, not only in acceptance speeches at award shows, but on all platforms, whether its on social media or in their professional work. American television personality and actor Steve Harvey encouraged his viewers to “talk to God often.” He said even if you’re not perfect, just make it a habit of having a conversation with God every day. “You don’t have to be in the same faith I’m in or you ain’t got to call God the same thing I call Him, but listen to me, you do have to call Him though. I made a T-shirt one time that said, faith don’t make it easy, faith makes it possible. All you want is the strength to get through your life. It ain’t about the money. I know a lot of very rich people that’s miserable. Money don’t make you happy, but if it is your desire to get more of it, you got to ask God for it. If you want to be happy and successful, you got to ask God for it. Most people don’t have the life of their dreams because you don’t ask God for it. The scripture says

you have not cause you ask not. It is a scripture that is available for everybody, it is not just for rich people,” said Harvey. Actor, director and movie producer Tyler Perry has often said that had he not been a person of faith, he would not be walking the successful path he is currently on in his life. In a chat with her pastors, Chad and Julia Veech, via her lifestyle platform entitled “Poosh”, social media personality and socialite Kourtney Kardashian spoke with the couple about teaching children about religion and faith without forcing the parent’s own beliefs on them. “We grew up always hearing Bible stories. My dad read us Bible stories and we would talk about it in the car, we would listen to Bible songs, we went to Sunday school, not every, but a lot. So, I just wonder if there’s something

Justin Bieber you guys do, or that’s really important to you, like routines or things that you do with your own family that could be helpful,” she asked. Chad Veech, who is also pastor to celebrities like Justin and Hailey Bieber, said: “All of that stuff, you can remember it right, it stays in you. The same for us, we grew up with Christian parents that did some of the same things. I think with our kids I am just trying to, even on the drive to school every morning as I’m getting ready to drop off my son, I’m like ‘All right, I’m going to pray over you and remember. You’re a leader at your school and people follow you and I’m going to

pray that you are a light on your campus. I think we just try and take regular moments and just go like, ‘Hey, we’re going to go to bed, but before we go to bed, hey son, is there any friend you want to pray for? Like, I’ll ask him that a lot.” Kourtney then expressed how much she and her siblings enjoyed animated Bible shows growing up. She said she thought the idea of asking her kids to pray for their friends and others was a good idea going forward. Likewise, singer Justin Bieber over the years has kept his Christian beliefs no secret. After leading a worship service at Pastor Judah Smith’s Churchhome,

Justin took to Instagram to let his supporters know how much it encouraged him. “Sang at church last night. God is pulling me through a hard season. Having trust in Jesus at your worst times is the absolute hardest. But He is faithful to complete what He started. I also want to thank my wife for being such a huge support in my life through this season. It says in the Bible count it all joy when you face trials of various kinds. Sounds insane considering when you face trials you feel terrible. But if we are grateful and worship God for what we do have in that season, there is so much power in that. Whatever pain you are going through, just keep telling yourself this won’t last. Love you guys we in this together,” said the Canadian singer. While speaking on his reasons for being so caring and generous in life, Grammy Award-winning artist Chance the Rapper said on the Ellen show: “My understanding of a lot of stuff is based on Jesus, so like Jesus teaches to be like, to care for your neighbouur and care for people that aren’t necessarily your blood but still a part of your body, because we are all humans. I think that’s an impactful thing I understood more as I got older.”

BLACK MEN UNITED AND CHURCH OF GOD TO HOST CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune FEATURES WRITER jgibson@tribunemedia.net

ANTING to get a jumpstart on its Christmas giving efforts, the Black Men United Bahamas, in partnership with the local Church of God in Christ (COGIC) organisation, is conducting a toy drive for the children of underserved communities in New Providence. In order to get this initiative off the ground, the group is seeking the support of the general public and those who are able to purchase a toy for a boy or girl and deliver it to its dropoff stations by December 1. Drop-off locations are at Global Worship Centre on Rosetta Street and the New Redeemed Tabernacle COGIC in Refuge Court. People can also donate to the organisation’s GoFundMe campaign. The Christmas toy drive will be held on Saturday, December 4 at various underprivileged community centres in Nassau. The event will be hosted by Elder Steven Fluker Hill of Atlanta, Georgia. “We aim to conduct a Christmas toy drive for the children of underserved communities of New Providence whose families have endured such trying times,” said Ricardo Mitchell, founder of Black Men United. “It is our goal to give hope and a smile to as many children as possible in our

communities during this time.” For those who can also give the gift of their time, the group is seeking those who are willing to assist in any way with their efforts. “We are also seeking additional volunteers. If you are interested in helping us as we make an impact on the lives of these young people, please contact us, we would love to have you on board,” said Mr Mitchell. Black Men United Bahamas is a new non-profit organisation whose objective is to highlight and uplift Black Bahamian professional men positively across various sectors and industries, with a focus on collective mentorship, accountability, networking and collaboration, but most importantly, philanthropic community support.

THE Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands will hold its 118th Session of Diocesan Synod from Monday, November 15, to Wednesday, November 17, 2021. The Synod is the annual general meeting of the Diocese. It brings together diocesan officials, all active clergy and two lay delegates from all 46 parishes in the Diocese. The Diocese at this time is focused on - and the Synod event will focus on – the age old truth that God is still God, and that we are still the Church – no matter what may challenge the world: Hurricane Dorian, COVID-19 or any other uncertainty. At this time the Church thanks God for all of His blessings and for keeping us through all the changing scenes of life. The Synod will convene with the customary opening Eucharist, on Monday at 6pm at Christ Church Cathedral. At this service, Diocesan Bishop Laish Boyd will deliver his annual charge. The public is invited to attend. The service will SCENES from the 2019 Synod. occur observing Photos:David Knowles/Pro Photos

standard COVID-19 protocols: temperature checks, hand-sanitising, wearing of masks, social distancing, etcetera. The service will be livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube. It will be broadcast on ZNS Television and Radio at 8.30pm on that evening, and rebroadcast on Sunday at a time to be announced. The business sessions will take place via Zoom on Tuesday and Wednesday. For the Synod, no clergy or lay delegate from outside of New Providence will be required to travel to Nassau because the business sessions are being conducted virtually. At the opening service, clergy and lay delegates from New Providence parishes will represent all other delegates.

A FAREWELL TO ONE OF CAT ISLAND’S MOST SENIOR CATECHISTS IT was in inclement weather that a twin engine Cessna charter flight landed on the tarmac of the Arthur's Town Airport in North Cat Island on Saturday morning past. On board was the Anglican Diocesan Bishop Laish Z Boyd, accompanied by Reverend Fathers Dwight Rolle and Chester Burton, both former priests who held responsibilities for the Anglican churches in Cat Island. They were welcomed by the newly installed Fr Dave Thomas, priest in charge of St Saviours Parish. It was not a joyous or celebratory occasion but a somber and sorrowful one; it was to lay to rest one of the senior catechists of Cat Island who was responsible and instrumental in the care and upkeep of Holy Cross in Dumfries in the northern settlement of Cat island. Catechist Joshua Rueben Stubbs was born in the 1920s. He was born and bred in the Anglican precepts and traditions. In his formative years he worked on ‘The Contract’ in the United States and subsequently relocated to Eleuthera where he worked on the Hatchet Bay Poultry farm because of the scarce economic activity taking place in Cat Island. Upon his return to Cat Island in the 1950s, he got married and started a family in his home settlement.

Catechist Joshua Rueben Stubbs He reared his family by instilling strong Christian values and a strong work ethic in them. In 1969, he was appointed lay reader in the Anglican faith and was later appointed catechist of Holy Cross Anglican Church in Dumfries. He also expended his energy in civic and community areas. He was a local constable and received a certificate of honourable meritorious award for the work he performed in that capacity and as a reserve oolice from Queen Elizabeth II in 1995. Catechist Stubbs was diagnosed with heart problems and left his

beloved hometown and church in September 2021. Additionally, after this time he suffered a stroke and later passed from death into eternity. Anglicans from north and south converged on the centrally located Church of St Peter’s in Knowles, which is considered the most central church in the geographical landscape of Anglican churches in the Cat Island. In a diverse Diocese which spans from Sweeting Cay in North Grand Bahama to Salt Cay in South Caicos in the Turks and Caicos Islands, catechists are usually agents that assist priests on these far-flung islands. Former Primary School Principal Allworth Rolle in his tribute to this iconic catechist who lived to see his 94th birthday, described Mr Stubbs as an endearing individual who would give you the proverbial heart out of his body to further the growth and development of his home settlement of Dumfries. In Mr Rolle’s fitting tribute he mentioned that Catechist Stubbs was a shop owner in the aforementioned community and vividly described how he would assist him with farm products and groceries from his personal store when the Dumfries Primary School had any fundraisers, and never once complained because his own children and grandchildren attended the school.
