H

ennessey Artistry 2017 brought back the style and finesse of the concerts back in the day... like in the 90’s when it was a top class event from presentation to performance. Hennessey did not hold back to create an unforgettable event that combined the art of music with visual art for a star-studded night.

The headlining act Movado gave the crowd an energetic performance that topped off a night of great performances from artists including Tory Lanez, Christopher Martin and Julien Believe. They performed to a stage that was designed to give guests with platinum access the ability to watch the performace directly on stage. Sky boxes were exquisitely designed and red carpets were rolled out that led to the Hennessy Artistry backdrop. The elegance of the lights and drapery added to the classy event and provided a great place for social media pictures to be taken. The event was also organized in a way that patrons were greeted at the gate and guided through parts that allowed for no long lines on

the way in, and an organized feel upon entrance - a far cry from feeling like you are begging to get inside a concert you already paid for.

Mavado, is a Jamaican deejay, singer and songwriter, signed to We the Best Music Group and Cash Money Records.

He performed many of his songs including his latest hit single “Fresh Cash”, and he continued to rock the crowd with favorites like “Weh Dem A Do”, “Money Changer”, “On the Rock”, and “Touch the Road”. Canadian artist Tory Lanez received wild screams from the crowd as he graced the stage with hits like “Say It”, “Everyone Falls in Love Sometimes”, and “Luv”.

It was really a night that satisfied the ladies as Christopher Martin put out more than enough songs and a high level of energy for his performance. He told Tribune Weekend that he has visited The Bahamas many times and “it’s a joy” to come to this country: “I have been to Bahamas over and over, many different islands. The people here show me so much love - Nassau, Freeport, Eleuthera - I just love it”.

Christopher revealed that he will be releasing his latest album in February,

2018 and will initially release a couple of music videos as well, including from a song on his new album called “Can’t Do It Again” and another featuring Romain Virgo called “Leave People Business Alone”.

Bahamian superstar Julien Believe gave a stellar performance and received much love from the crowd, which responded with vigor to his hype songs like “Live and Wine” and “Don’t Stop Wining for Me”.

“It’s important to have the belief that you can do anything you want, and I want my life to be a testimony to that and the opportunities presented to me a son of the soil,” said Julian.

“I think it’s the support of Bahamian people that catapulted me overseas. To be a success, you have to not give in, have stickability and think that things will happen for you.”

“I am working on a very big project over the next year that will create a lot of opportunities for Bahamian artists so moving forward, they would have platforms to launch their career,” Julian added. He said expect to see the project create more opportunities for Bahamian artists to record in studios, have access

to funding, and get the necessary help to improve their level of talent.

“I recognize the platform I have and I want to make changes for the masses and a create a paradigm shift for the next generation of creatives,” he said.

Visual Artist Stefan Davis of Airbrush Junkies stunned the crowd as he painted live during the performances. Without a photograph as a guide, Stefan painted the images of the performing artists upsidedown and turned them around only at the end of the performance.

Promoter Supa Mario, who has hosted Hennessey Artistry in the past for the likes of Beenie Man and Dexta Dapps, congratulated Hennessey Artistry on a “successful event”.

“When we get together, we control the atmosphere; the vibes are right, the music is right, and it’s peace, love and unity,” he said.

by Hennessey along with Aliv, 100 Jamz and Climax. Hennessey Artistry weekend comprised of three events: The Nassau Concert on Friday night, Saturday night concert in Freeport and Hennessey Artistry on the Beach event on Sunday at Arawak Cay.

interview A powerful mother-daughter duo is about to take the Bahamian music industry by storm – but they won’t be performing a duet. Richa and Maleah Sands are each releasing their own individual work, and this week will be a memorable one in their careers, they tell Felicity Ingraham.

ormer Miss Bahamas Richa Sands is releasing her second single, “Good Lovin”, followed by an accompanying music video, which was filmed at the Orange Hill Beach Resort by Jiggy Productions. The public can expect to see around Thanksgiving.

Meanwhile, as kids return to school from mid-term break, 12-year-old Maleah is preparing for a local school tour to promote her music, including her first single, “Happy”. Maleah is working

to release an EP before the end of November, and says she is having a blast working with successful Bahamian artists such as Sketch Carey and Sammi Starr.

She has a featured spot on “The Rush” TV show – “Up Close with Maleah Gabrielle” – which airs every Thursday on Cable 12 TV. Watch to keep up with Maleah’s latest adventures, her interviews with outstanding

Bahamians, her cooking, learning languages, and exercising to encourage other kids to “get up and move”.

This mother-daughter duo has plans to tour together in the near future, with Richa in full production mode to have her album completed by November 2018.

It would seem that such a busy career in music would not leave Maleah much time for academics, but this honour roll student is determined to keep both her grades and creativity up.

“I don’t believe as a parent we should push children in a way that forces them,” Richa told Tribune Weekend.

“We have to encourage them in the areas where their gifts and talents are.

They come to the earth innately with certain gifts and talents, and if you pay attention to your children, you know what they are.”

She noticed that Maleah could carry a tune from a very young age, and was also rhythmic, loving to dance and play percussion instruments. It helped that her mother was heavily involved in the music industry.

Richa spent 12 years touring around the world with American Christian worship leader, singer and songwriter Ron

Kenoly, whose expressed mission is “to create an environment for the manifest presence of God”. After returning home and the birth of her daughter, Richa remained active in creative projects, including performing jazz for many years.

“I am a jazz performer also, and periodically she would come along with me.

She loved it and eventually I would teach her some songs and she would get up on stage and perform them. People started telling her how good she was,” said Richa.

At this point, Richa said she began asking herself if her daughter could be headed for a career in music. As Maleah got older, she joined a girl group that was together for a short period of time. The dedication and passion which Maleah exhibited for the project gave Richa more confidence that this was indeed a path her daughter was destined for.

“She showed me that this is something she really wanted to do,” Richa recalled. They had a good chat and then decided to attempt Maleah’s first single, “Happy”. The song was introduced to YouTube on October 16 and currently has nearly 9,000 views.

“It’s very important for parents to see what their children’s gifts are and encourage and push them... open avenues and provide them with opportunities to grow in their gifting,” said Richa.

Sands and his wife Ruth found Richa at the Children’s Emergency Hostel at the age of five and took their ray of sunshine home. With her father serving as leader of a Pentecostal church, Richa spent her childhood years actively involved in the church, including singing in the choir. She, like so many great singers, got their first taste for performing and the stage from church. Thereafter, she started recording professionally with System 3, a Grammynominated Bahamian group of artists.

Richa captured the hearts of Bahamians when she won the Miss Bahamas beauty pageant in 1992 and then went on to compete on behalf of the country in Mexico at the Miss Universe pageant in 1993. She has remained active in the pageant community and recently founded the Queens in Action International Humanitarian Organisation.

Richa encourages people to follow the group’s Facebook page to find out how to become a part of a movement designed to encourage women to see the queen in themselves.

Her first single, “Don’t Let Me Go”, was produced by Freddy Got Styx and features the beauty of the Bahamian sand and sea.

The video received over 20,000 views within the first two weeks of being uploaded to YouTube.

Richa is a multi-talented woman and Maleah is steadily following in her mother’s footsteps. Richa is also a songwriter and has written for gospel sensation Juanita Bynum’s first gold album “A Piece of My Passion”.

As an actress, Richa has received the ‘Female Actress of the Year’ award from the Bahamas International Film Festival (Haven Award). She is also following her passion for writing as she to work on a book series designed to inspire young people to learn about nation-builders throughout the African Diaspora. Richa also enjoys motivational speaking and fashion designing. She has travelled the world with her talents and has graced many stages to sing or deliver a passionate address.

She encourages Bahamian artists with aspirations to record and create their own music to take a leap of faith and try to accomplish their dreams; not just thinking about the Bahamian market, but the global one awaiting them.

“It’s really important thinking be not in confines of just Bahamas,” Richa advised.

“It can be very difficult depending own genre you choose. If you are going to play rake n’ scrape, Junkanoo or Goombay, you should get lots of work playing at cultural events... not saying our music is confined to the Bahamas; our music can go worldwide.

Maleah also doesn’t only sing; she’s a dancer and has plans to show off her skills in each music video she makes. She trained at the Bahamas’ National Dance School in varying forms of dance – ballet, modern, hip hop and tap. She also joined a drumming class in which she was the only girl, but this did not intimidate her as she held pace with the big boys.

Academically, Maleah maintains her place on the honour roll at San Pedro International School. She is bilingual – speaks English and Spanish – and is also learning Mandarin, receiving her first grade level certificate in conversational Mandarin in 2016. She is also learning French. She has won her grade level spelling bee every year for the past three years. Her participation in sports has also earned her various successes. She especially enjoys swimming, tennis and skating. She has assisted her mom with hosting several summer Life Skills programmes and monthly birthday events for the children of the Emergency Hostel, the children’s home from which Richa was adopted.

As a member of her mother’s Queens in Action organisation, Maleah also assisted with the collection of relief items for those affected by Hurricane Matthew in 2016, and dispersed school supplies to various organisations working with those who were affected by Hurricane Irma in 2017.

OME of the most popular trends in baking will be reflected in the skills of novice chefs who will battle it out in the upcoming first annual Amateur Bake-Off Challenge.

The Bake-Off competition is scheduled for November 18, 9am - 4pm at the University of the Bahamas’ Culinary Kitchen. A presentation will be made in the lecture room before a live audience and a panel of professional chefs.

Bahamian Chef Elvis Collie, organiser of the event, said he is counting on participants being able to create popular, on-the-go dessert items.

“Today we are a fast-paced society. We want everything now and we don’t want to wait. This also applies to our meals. Popular cakes and baking trends (include) bite-sized, on-the-go foods such as mouth-watering miniature cakes and pies with fruit toppings, savoury muffins and cupcakes, stuffed eclairs with chocolate toppings and delicious sprinkles, all-day breakfast items, crepes and Belgian waffles with ice cream drizzled with chocolate, caramel and shaved candies,” he said.

To present the Bake-Off, Chef Collie partnered with Anthony Smith and West Point Media, whose mission is to play its part in the community while also helping novice chefs reach out to a wider market and ultimately enhance their business prospects.

Once the competition is launched, six lucky amateur chefs will be randomly picked from a application box. Bakers will go through four bake-off challenges that will test their skills in both hot and cold pastry-making and desserts. Through a process of elimination, judges will assess flavour, texture, and presentation after each challenge.

must work with only their skills and a few other instruments.

“Our Bake-Off competition is targeted specifically at amateur bakers or novices. I am excited about the partnership with West Point Media, as the production company, to execute our competition,” said Chef Collie, who is also the founder of Heart of the Islands Baking and Catering.

“Our contestants come straight from the kitchen of everyday homemakers, consumers, baking enthusiasts, and those that simply have a love and passion for pastry-making,” he said.

Chef Collie himself started his culinary endeavours right in his mother’s kitchen, and she was his inspiration for becoming a professional chef.

“I remember waking up on Sunday mornings to a variety of heavenly aromas – herbs, spices and different foods being prepared in the kitchen.

It was the first time I was passionate about anything. For me it was like an explosion of fireworks in my head and I just had to be in the kitchen where the action was,” he said.

When he left high school, he tried a few career paths, but eventually found

a time. In 2010, I joined the Albany family, and in October 2014 I started to write my cook book, ‘From the Heart of the Islands’. After completing the project on April 30 of this year, I released the book. On May 15 I resigned from Albany – I needed a greater challenge – and in August I started my business, Heart of the Islands Catering,” he said.

Over the years, Chef Collie has had the privilege of working with a cadre of executive chefs from around the world.

“But I am a Bahamian. I love my country, my people and our unique foods. If we repackage and market our authentic Bahamian foods differently, we can take it to the world,” he said.

Eleuthera offers haven for plus size tourists

T

he Resort, the world’s only hotel that specifically caters to plus size travellers.

British entrepreneur and businessman James King is the man behind the unique boutique hotel which opened its doors two years ago on the island of Eleuthera.

He came up with the idea some 15 years ago when he was working at a resort in Granada. There, he witnessed a guest fall through a beach chair. And as if the humiliation of the ordeal was not enough, the guest then had to pay $150 for the destruction of hotel property.

This incident inspired him to create a space where being plus size no longer means being shamed, humiliated or worried about where you can just sit while on vacation.

“I designed The Resort to be a place for plus size individuals to just be themselves without fear of outside judgement,” he told Tribune Weekend.

Many plus size travellers commented on The Resort’s Facebook page that when staying at other hotels they are often subjected to jokes about their size. However, once at The Resort, they can be carefree in the presence of those like themselves who share the same struggles.

Before finding the property in Eleuthera to build the hotel complex, James said he pitched the idea to executives at various resorts he had previously worked at. His ideas were passed off as laughable and not given serious attention.

“I got not get a dime or interest from any of them,” he said.

Without the backing of an established brand, James and his wife spent most of their savings trying to renovate the property on Eleuthera. And the gamble seems to have paid off. Now a successful haven for plus size travellers, The Resort has been been featured on news sites and blogs around the world, including The New York Post, Yahoo News, The Sun and People magazine, among others.

Last Tuesday, the property and its guests were featured in a one-hour primetime documentary on ITV in the UK.

“The greatest amenity is the Bahamian staff. They have the perfect attitude, sense of humour and attitude to make everyone feel at home and special.”

The“18-30StoneHoliday”showfeatured several plus size British holiday-makers who were flown to the Eleuthera for a stay at The Resort. In the show, viewers get to hear from some of the guests about the struggles of being overweight and how their time at The Resort had been a liberating experience.

“The biggest benefit is creating a safe haven for the plus size. With the vast amount of international media (attention), the Bahamas is now seen as a country that welcomes people of size from all over the world,” said James.

To accommodate his target audience, James ensured that furniture and other

amenitiesatthehotelwereallbeenchosen with larger persons in mind.

“Everything has to be customised for people of size – the dining, the chairs, the linen,” said James.

The doorways are wider than usual, the extra strong beds are reinforced with two bars of steel to support hundreds of pounds, and the chairs and loungers are a metre wide and made of a particularly strong wood – Brazilian wood. The private beaches are judgement-free zones.

The toilets are also made to support heavier frames, James added.

In the end, after much searching, James finally found most of what needed and guests can now enjoy a relaxing stay at The Resort.

The Resort only allows groups of up to 24 people to book at a time “to preserve the homely atmosphere”. The flat rate is $16,400 for a six-day stay that includes three buffet meals a day, with drinks and tips being handled on the honour system. The rate per person depends on the number in the group.

Activities on the island include swimming, kayaking, boating, fishing and more.

“Most guests settle in and relax for their six-day stay at The Resort. The greatest amenity is the Bahamian staff. They have the perfect attitude, sense of humour and attitude to make everyone feel at home and special,” said James.

Meals at The Resort are breakfast, lunch and dinner, and are usually announced by the ringing of a cowbell.

Lunches and dinners are usually a choice of one Caribbean comfort food or an America one.

While The Resort’s set-up is designed for the plus size safe traveller, it does not discriminate against the average size person.

Given the success of his Eleuthera property, which is at 100 per cent occupancy for the rest of the year, James is now making plans to open a second resort on the nearby Cat Island for plus size couples and singles.

Creative Nassau solidifies Bahamas’ presence in global arena

reative Nassau (CN), the registered non-profit organisation which helped make the City of Nassau a ‘UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Arts’ in 2014 is asking the new FNM government to fully embrace and utilise the prestigious designation.

The CN team recently relayed a warm welcome to the 64 new member cities of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN). With this latest addition, the network now numbers 180 cities from 72 countries.

CN President Pam Burnside stated: “Creative Nassau is so proud to be one of only three cities in the Caribbean region to have achieved membership in this prestigious network, and we achieved success without any government help.

Our UNESCO application identified the promotion and enhancement of our amazing Straw industry and Junkanoo traditions as our primary focus. Our very

“In September, we attended the first ever UCCN Craft and Folk Arts Cluster Conference in Paducah, Kentucky where an official Declaration was signed by member cities of the Cluster stating our commitment to UNESCO’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. In October, Bahamian ceramicist Alistair Stevenson, who is presently completing his ceramics degree in Jingdezhen, China, curated and manned the successful Creative Nassau pavilion at one of the largest International Ceramics Fair in China. In November, travel to Bolivia to attend a Civil Society Meeting on behalf of the Inter-American Development Bank will also expand opportunity for further international networking,” said Mrs Burnside.

“Through this amazing membership, theBahamashasestablishedafirmfooting on the international stage, demonstrating to the world that we are indeed more than just sun, sand and sea. It is our hope that this new government will now recognise and fully embrace this UNESCO designation and utilise it as a development engine for the country for the benefit of all.”

CN Vice President Patricia Glinton Meicholas added: “Although our group comprises just a few core persons, Creative Nassau is totally committed to building and developing our country through its people who are our most precious resource. Much work needs to be done here at home but we can achieve so much more if we commit to forming strategic international partnerships in order to pool resources, share ideas and collaborate to advance the creative agenda. Sundance expands into weekend-long festival

HE highly anticipated Sundance Festival is back, but this time around for three whole days of fun.

So save your energy, grab your gear and get ready to party.

In addition to the colourful beach event held at Nirvana Beach this Saturday, Pupstar Entertainment has added two additional activities: the Sundance and Suits Cooler Fete to take place this evening on board the Yellow Bird, and a poolside Boozy Brunch to take place at the Harbourfront Lounge on Sunday, 1pm - 6pm.

“This has truly been a roller coaster of a journey over the last few years, but we have certainly grown in a positive way. Our brand is constantly expanding and has become a household name when it comes to events and activities. You can find a Pupstar event at least once a month, whether it be for a movie night, an event, or supporting and assisting other private events, venues and artists. We recently introduced our own monthly calendar that is circulated on the first of every month for our growing list of followers, to keep them in the know,” said said Pupstar’s president, Alicia “Puppy” Robinson.

Tonight’s Sundance and Suits Cooler Fete, beginning at 7.30pm, will feature international deejays Riggo Suave and Back to Basics. Then, tomorrow afternoon, Nirvana Beach will be the place to be from 12noon to 9pm, with entertainment lineup to featuring local and international deejays – DJ Mayday, DJ Bravo, Dr Esan and Back to Basics. A new inclusion will also highlight performances by Bahamian talents such as Bodine, Wendi Lewis, MDeez, and Judah Tha Lion, hosted by Hot 91’s own Triz.

Vendors on site will include: VMF (Vell Monkey Foot), Yanella, Yummy Sky Juice, Just A Pop, Hennergy, Vidacayo, Island Lyfestyle, Ice King, and Oh Paparazzi.

Black Opal rebrands, focuses on skin care

lack Opal, known as the premier make-up line for women of colour, has rebranded and gone back to the lab to improve its products with a focus on skin care.

The brand’s new name is BLK/OPL and it comes with entirely new product packaging.

In the Bahamas, BLK/ OPL has not only presented a full portfolio of its make-up line for local consumption, but it has also re-introduced its skin care line. For years, Bahamian women raved about the BLK/ OPL skin care and its effectiveness, but those products were missing from the shelves for a while.

Now, just in time for the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, the full stock of make-up and skin care has arrived in the country. The company’s local sales executive, Tabatha Porter, is encouraging Bahamian women to consider giving BLK/ OPL’s new products a try.

“We’ve listened to our customers.

They wanted a less oily product; they got it and even more,” said Tabatha.

She said BLK/ OPL went back to the lab to have scientists create products that not only beautify, but also enhance the skin and refine the pores. When used along with the skin care line, customers should expect to achieve a flawless look.

Tabatha is currently stocking the shelves at local beauty stores and some pharmacies with fresh lip colours that came in for Christmas and all the new products from BLK/ OPL. “BLK/ OPL foundation now has shade ID technology,” said Tabatha, explaining that many women in the Bahamas have unevenly toned skin due to sun damage. However, shade ID technology picks up on the uneven tones and works to create a more even look without having to pile on layers of product prior to use just to create an even toned look.

It’s definitely whimsical, but I love that we haven’t seen anything quite like it on the red carpet. The old-fashioned floral pattern also seems to work. I also love the sleek, simple hairdo and her make-up. She looks like a wood nymph.”

Farah says: “What happens when Spring and Fall intersects? A disaster of a dress like the one Margot is wearing. There is way too much going on with this look... too many strings all over the place, too many different materials.”

Brutha magazine strives to motivate men of colour

HAT started off as a hobby project back in 2012 has now turned into a tool to motivate men of colour all around the world.

The Brutha magazine, which was launched five years ago by Bahamian Travis Sweeting, boasts a readership of more than 15,000 and continues to shine a light on the successes of men in the Caribbean region, especially here at home.

The bi-monthly digital publication launched its latest issue last week. It features Bahamian fashion icon and Islands of the World founder/producer Owen Bethel, and highlights individuals such as Keron Wood, founder of Pico Lapel, and Norman Lightbourne, ALIV marketing executive, as its ‘Men on the Rise’.

The magazine’s ‘Artist Spotlight’ features filmmaker Kareem Mortimer, who recently released his movie “Cargo” with special star-studded gala event last month. In his interview, he talks about ushering in a new era in the Caribbean through the arts.

“They all have made a name for themselves locally and internationally in their respective fields. We look for persons who have demonstrated that following your dreams and goals can happen because they did it,” said Travis, who is also the publication’s editor-in-chief.

“Brutha exists as a motivational tool to help men of colour, primarily, to live and lead their best lives ever. Apart from our features’ individual strengths and talents, it is great for our readership to see men, who are often a disregarded demographic, excel in life and work. In fact, more importantly, men that look like they do.”

The first issue of Brutha featured singer Sammi Starr, and since then Brutha has gone on to produce 14 issues surrounding Caribbean talent

‘Mad Men’ creator delivers big with first novel AT 134 pages, Matthew Weiner’s “Heather, The Totality” is best consumed in one bite like those exquisite pastries that line the cases of the French bakery/cafes on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The kind of people who patronize those tony joints, especially for Sunday brunch and often with their private-schooled kids in tow, take centre stage in Weiner’s suspenseful debut novel.

Best known as the creator of “Mad Men” and a writer on “The Sopranos,” Weiner writes with maximum economy. The book practically reads like a screenplay, down to its eccentric capitalisation. Characters are sketched in quickly, with just the right amount of detail to delineate a type.

Mark and Karen Breakstone would appear to be among society’s winners.

He has a job in finance, earning enough so she can be a Manhattan-style, stayat-home mom. Although they don’t have a child until relatively late in life, when they do, Heather, the namesake of the book, becomes their totality.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Hudson River, Bobby Klasky is growing up with a heroin-addicted mother whose lowlife boyfriends like to wake him up in the middle of the night to use him as “a punching bag or a parlor trick.” By the time he’s old enough to join a construction crew renovating the Breakstones’ apartment building, he’s done time for assault and committed far worse crimes.

By then, Heather has matured into a beautiful, idealistic and rebellious teenager; Bobby has become obsessed with her; and mild-mannered Mark

with covers featuring businessmen, fitness gurus and creative individuals. Persons such as Senator Ranard Henfield, composer Cleophas Adderley, music artist Sketch Carey, master trainer Jimmy Mackey, singer Julien Believe, designer Theodore Sealy, stylist Kedar Clarke, and Pras Michele of the Fugees have all graced the cover of the online magazine.

“Nowadays, we gross anywhere between 15,000 to 18,000 views per issue up from our first day numbers.

That’s the great thing about digital...the numbers are there almost immediately, rather than through print. Our team has also grown to nine persons locally with contributions from international talent in Atlanta, Tampa, New York, Chicago and South Africa,” said Travis.

“Our e-mail subscriber base has grown tremendously to over 20,000 e-mails. Moreover, our issues are read all over the world with a heavy percentage in the Bahamas and the United States, the Caribbean, and as far as Turkey.”

Within the coming weeks, Travis said they hope to release ‘The Black’ issue, continue working on an app for the magazine, and on the American and Canadian versions of Brutha.

Describing the inspiration for the book, Weiner wrote, “I walked past this beautiful schoolgirl going into a building under construction, and I saw a man working there stare at her with threatening intensity. I don’t have any daughters, but what I wrote down was, ‘What if her father saw that?’”

“Heather, The Totality” is his answer. Beyond its chilling portrait of America’s social and economic divide, the novel raises a number of thorny questions: whether a “good” man could be a killer. Whether a “bad” man might be transfigured. How everyone, rich and poor alike, is complicit in their fate and trapped in their delusions.

And how no one ever gets off scot-free.

‘Murder on the Orient Express’ is a lavish romp MURDER ON THE ORIENT RUNNING TIME: 114 MINS

K

enneth Branagh’s “Murder on the Orient Express “ is a visual feast, bursting with movie stars, glamour and production value so high, you might just exit the theatre experiencing some time-warp whiplash. Certainly no studio would make a straightforward, classical whodunit with a budget the size of a modest superhero pic (and no superheroes to speak of) nowadays, you think. What year is this anyway?

But against all odds and logic, here we have, in the waning days of 2017, a perfectly decent adaptation of Agatha Christie’s 1934 novel with the likes of Michelle Pfeiffer, Penelope Cruz, Johnny Depp, Judi Dench and Branagh himself lighting up the big screen and chewing the decadent scenery like oldfashioned stars.

Branagh plays the lead, Hercule Poirot, a dandy Belgian detective with a gloriously over-the-top moustache who can only see the world as it should be. Imperfections, he says, stand out, whether it’s two soft-boiled eggs that are of different sizes or, you know, the kind of incongruities that make it immediately obvious to him who has committed a crime. This is all laid out quite neatly in a lively opening sequence at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem where he theatrically solves a theft in front of a crowd of locals on the verge of rioting.

Chance brings him aboard the Orient Express, which should really have its own credit in the film, where he meets an odd group of strangers — a sultry widow (Pfeiffer), a secretive governess (Daisy Ridley), the doctor whom she pretends to not know (Leslie Odom

Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot Jr), a gangster-like art dealer (Depp), his valet (Derek Jacobi) and his bookkeeper (Josh Gad), a princess (Dench) and her maid (Olivia Coleman), a religious zealot (Cruz), a volatile dancer (Sergei Polunin) and his sick wife (Lucy Boynton), a German professor (Willem Dafoe) and a count (Manuel GarciaRulfo). And then one of them dies — there’s at least a chance someone reading doesn’t yet know who — and everyone remaining becomes a suspect.

Got all that?

Don’t worry. It’s more than a little overwhelming to keep track of who’s who in this bunch and quite a few get the short shrift. But it’s still fun enough to see Depp hamming it up with a thick New York accent, Pfeiffer vamping

around the train’s hallways and Branagh careening between giddy parody and self-seriousness as a man who delights in a well-constructed pastry and a good turn-of-phrase from Charles Dickens but can’t seem to comprehend moral ambiguity in the slightest.

Unfortunately, the movie loses its steam right when the intrigue is supposed to be taking over. The discovery process isn’t nearly as fun or engaging as it should be, and despite the energetic start, the film becomes a bit of a slog waiting for the big answer (for those who already know it, either from the source material, Sidney Lumet’s 1974 film or any of the other adaptations, this might be even more tedious).

Michelle Pfeiffer as Caroline Hubbard Branagh certainly steals scenes as Poirot, but the director might have taken some more time to ensure that all of his characters were given as loving a treatment as his own, or the setting, which is truly quite splendid to behold and even makes up for some of the deficiencies of the storytelling.

As odd as it might sound, it is somewhat refreshing to sit in a theatre and watch a grand scale production that’s not set in space or predetermined by the pages in a comic book. Then it goes and mucks it all up by leaving the door conspicuously open for a sequel.

Between the cracks

Buttery English peas

Jack Hardy shines a light on vegetables which are often overlooked by local gardeners.

E

very year, I cover the main vegetable groupings in order to help new gardeners gain confidence and experienced gardeners pick up a tip or two.

But once the list is complete – tomatoes, crucifers, cucurbits, herbs, et cetera – there are some notable veggies missing that do not fit into convenient categories.

These, you may say, have fallen between the cracks.

One such is fennel, popular in Europe and particularly associated with Florence in Italy. Fennel develops a bulbous white stem and produces masses of feathery foliage. The bulb can be sliced thinly and eaten raw or simmered as a side vegetable that canaccommodateasplashofvinaigretteor

a drizzle of cream sauce. The anise flavour can vary from strong to haunting.

Fennel is a candidate to be grown in a dining table-sized plot all on its own. It is a three month crop from seed to harvest but like carrots (to which fennel is related) can stay in the ground for a few weeks after maturing. It is also a perennial so once your fennel plot is established you will have fennel for ever, growing from a sturdy root system.

Plant seeds 10 inches apart and keep moist until the seedlings are happily rooted. When the lower stem thickens you can mound soil around it to keep light out and blanch the edible portion. Allow a few of your plants to remain unharvested (and unmounded) to allow the fennel to flower and produce seeds. Fennel seeds are the secret to many Italian sauces. When you wonder why your sauce does not taste like that in your favourite Italian restaurant the answer is usually the lack of fennel seeds, toasted and ground before adding.

Beet greens are wonderful but usually only available when harvesting the whole plant. I tried a type of beet that had inedible roots and was only used for its leaves but was underwhelmed. In Europe a relative of beets called chard is very popular and unlike beets produces leaves (and stalks) on a cut and come again basis. If you love beetgreensyouwilltrulyappreciatechard.

The leaves are mostly cooked on their own and the stalks used separately. The stalks

makealovelylunchtimesnackbraisedand dribbled with a béchamel -based sauce.

The leaves of chard are often cooked whole rather than shredded and this tends to lend them substance. The leaves are carunculated and the many little recesses help retain any vinaigrette that may be added. We should all be eating greens and I feel sure those people who enjoy kale will like the more delicate tasting chard even more.

You know chard is related to beets when you open up the package of seeds and see the seed capsules. Plant chard about 8 inches apart, or one plant to a gallon pot. Even better is five chard plants in a 4-gallon pot because the larger pot retains moisture more efficiently.

Some chard – usually called Swiss chard –hasredoryellowstalks.Eschewtheseand use only chard with white stalks and green leaves.Genuineminestronesoupfeatures chard stalks cut up rather as we in The Bahamas use celery in a souse.

Chard is particularly enjoyed in Provence and Italy as a wonderfully adaptable light and healthy vegetable. Try it.

When we buy celery from the store most of the leaves have been cut away.

If we grow our own celery it will be very green and probably much thinner than imported.

Celery is a Fennel bulbs swamp plant and needs lots of water. What locally grown celery does give us is strong tasting leaves that liven up potato, egg and chicken salads without lumpy stalks. In other words, grow celery as a herb rather than a vegetable. You can still cut the stalks and use them in a longcooking souse but you will find them too sinewy to use as crudités. Celery heads should be planted at least eight inches apart and watered daily, by nature or you.

It is sad that green peas – English peas – have been relegated to between the cracks status. In Europe they have long been a

major garden crop, the major delight of thevegetableseason.HereintheBahamas they are only successful at the coolest time of year so now is a good time to get them into the ground if you are both a gardener and an epicure. Frozen baby peas taste great but still fall short of freshly-grown and shucked.

Choose a pea variety that is not edible podded or snow peas and has about 8 peas toapod.MyfavouritegreenpeawasMaestro but I have not seen Maestro for a few years. Plant the seeds about two inches apart under a line of dead two to three feet branches pushed into the soil. The pea vine tendrils will attach themselves to the branches and produce pods well above the ground. When the peas are full the pod often takes on a pearly hue. When you shuck your peas do not throw away the pods. They can be boiled in the same way as corn cobs to produce an addition to vegetable stock, or the already-flavoured water can be used to cook the peas. The French like to cook their peas in Perrier water with shredded lettuce added.

A knob of butter and the addition at the last moment of some bruised mint leaves will also do the job.

Snow peas, strangelyenough, are easier to grow and have a longer harvest here in the subtropics than regular peas. If you useanOregonvariety you can have the best of both worlds. Early on the vigorous vines produce tender flat snow peas. If left on the vines the pods fill with meaty peas. Grow these if you trying peas for the first time.

Please do not take Ogden Nash’s advice: “I eat my peas with honey/ I’ve done it all my life/ It makes the peas taste funny/ but it keeps them on the knife.”

The Cove reborn during star-studded weekend

T

he Cove brought its A game last Friday as it invited stars like Fergie, Drew Barrymore, Christian Siriano and Brooke Shields and other big names to participate in a weekend-long party to celebrate the transformation of the luxury Atlantis property.

The work of artists, musicians, designers, and chefs was revealed as guests paid homage to Bahamian culture, taking in soul-stirring art, design and local cuisine.

The relaunch is centered mainly on the transformed, sprawling pool area and two new restaurants – Fish by José Andres and Sip Sip. The new poolscape was transformed with the help of renowned textile designer Lulu de Kwiatkowski, who split her childhood between the Hamptons and Lyford Cay. She was tasked with bringing a new vision to the hotel’s poolside décor, which she achieved with vibrant patterns on the lounge chairs and umbrellas. To harken back to the glamour of the 1950s and 60s, she added vintage photographs of holiday-makers dressed in their finest and with a cocktail in hand.

The exclusive weekend kicked off on Friday with a surfside dinner on Paradise Beach. Guests dined on authentic Bahamian fare, ranging from out-ofthe-shell conch to fresh-caught Nassau grouper wrapped in banana leaf, and sipped on bespoke Avion Paloma cocktails. The evening also featured a dynamic performance by musical guest Spencer Ludwig, in collaboration with Bahamian artists Tingum Dem. On Saturday, guests lounged on the white-sand beach and the newly

José Andres, opening this February at the resort. Chef Andrés is often credited with bringing the small plates dining concept to America. At the new Cove restaurant, it is expected he will elevate regional seafood classics as he has done at his other locations.

literary lives - robert evans

The last tycoon Sir Christopher Ondaatje explores the turbulent career of one of Hollywood’s most notorious producers who is best known for “Rosemary’s Baby”, “The Godfather” and “Chinatown”.

R

obert Evans was born Robert J Shapera on June 29, 1930, and raised on Manhattan’s Upper West Side where his father had a thriving dental practice in Harlem.

He began his show business career as a teenager on radio. After failing in his first attempt at movie acting he got a job promoting sales of ladies’ slacks

for Evan-Picone, the clothing company founded and run by his brother.

In 1956, while on a business trip to Hollywood, he was spotted hanging around the pool of the Beverly Hills Hotel by Norma Shearer who recommended him for the role of her late husband Irving Thalberg in “Man of a Thousand Faces” (1957). Thus began his brief and disastrous acting career.

He was also spotted by the producer Darryl F Zanuck at 20th Century Fox who inadvisedly cast Evans in the role of the bullfighter Pedro Romero in “The Sun Also Rises” (1957). He did this against the wishes of Ava Gardner and Tyrone Power – who were cast as leads – and even Hemingway himself.

Zanuck overruled everybody.

“The kid stays in the picture. And anybody who doesn’t like it can quit,” Darryl F Zanuck, producer.

Evans, who later became one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers,

used Zanuck’s response as the title for his 1994 autobiography, “The Kid Stays in the Picture”.

“I was sure of one thing: I was a halfassed actor.”

It was then that Evans knew that acting was never going to be enough for him. He was determined to be the producer – the boss. Both films appeared together in 1957 and Evans found himself being offered several roles, but only in unmemorable minor films. After acting in some of these he realised he did not have the qualities to be a major film star. He was also given an ultimatum by his brother’s company – either return to New York as an executive or sell his stake in the company.

By this time Evans had married the first of what were to be seven brides – Hollywood starlet Sharon Hugueny.

He had a tough decision to make, and chose the business career – taking his child bride back to Evan-Picone and

New York. Within six months, Evans and Hugueny divorced. He hated life in his brother’s clothing company and yearned for his life in Hollywood.

Soon, in 1966, he and his partners sold their company to Revlon, making a reported $10 million on the deal. He left Evan-Picone within months and returned to pursue his dream in Hollywood, this time taking with him a new wife – model Camilla Sparv.

Almost immediately, even as his new marriage was breaking up, Evans’s career as a producer began its upward spiral when he landed a three-picture contract with 20th Century Fox. There are various stories of how Evans got his job as head of Paramount Studios. One was that Greg Bautzer and Sidney Korshak had introduced him to Charles Bluhdorn, the new head of Paramount’s parent Gulf & Western, saying that Evans knew everyone in Hollywood and that he was rumoured to have an aggressive style. Another is that seeing an article on him by Peter Bart in the New York Times, the current heads of Paramount hired him to head their European production office in London. It was an offer he couldn’t refuse and, reneging on his contract with 20th Century Fox, without making a single film for them, he went to London. A few months later Bluhdorn moved Evans back to Hollywood and made him head of production for Paramount.

Despite his inexperience Evans turned the floundering studio around and made Paramount the most successful studio in Hollywood, a profitable arm of Gulf & Western.

Under his charge Paramount produced “Barefoot in the Park” (1967), “Rosemary’s Baby” (1968), “The Odd Couple” (1968), “The Italian Job” (1969), “Goodbye Columbus” (1969), “True Grit” (1969), “Love Story” (1970), “Harold and Maude” (1971), “The Godfather” (1972), “Serpico” (1973), “Save the Tiger” (1973), “The Conversation” (1974), “The Godfather II” (1974), “The Great Gatsby” (1974), and “Chinatown” (1974).

While at Paramount, from 1967 to 1974, the studio’s earnings grew from five per cent of Gulf & Western’s income to 55 per cent. “Rosemary’s Baby” became the highest grossing film in the summer of 1968, making Mia Farrow a huge star. “Goodbye Columbus” was Paramount’s next hit and its star Ali MacGraw became Evans’ new wife. He married her the same year that the film came out. The marriage lasted three years before they divorced as

well. The couple had one child, Joshua, the only child Evans would have.

Henry Kissinger offered to help Evans.

“If I can negotiate with the North Vietnamese, I think I can smooth the way with Ali.” Evans replied: “Henry ... you know countries, but you don’t know women.

When it’s over, it’s over.”

“Love Story”, also starring Ali MacGraw, was released in 1970; followed by “The Godfather” and “Chinatown” – all huge hits. Evans next married Phyllis George, a former Miss America, in 1977. This marriage lasted 11 months.

After guiding Paramount Pictures to be the largest and most successful movie producer in Hollywood, Evans convinced Charles Bluhdorn at Gulf & Western to allow him to produce movies personally as an independent while still remaining head of Paramount. Although Paramount’s fortunes had soared, Evans’s fortunes had not; life in his new role as an independent producer did not pan out quite as he had hoped. Other movie producers at Paramount, threatening a rebellion, forced Evans to give up his powerful position as head of production.

To be successful you have to have friends; to be very successful you have to have enemies. Initially Evans seemed impervious to failure, producing “Marathon Man” (1976) and “Black Sunday” (1977), but cracks were beginning to appear in his life.

Following the ridicule from producing “Popeye” (1980), Evans hit a career slump that ended with him broke and ostracised from Hollywood.

In 1980, he was prosecuted, together with his brother, for buying thousands of dollars worth of cocaine. He pleaded innocent to dealing in the drug but admitted that he was a user. He avoided being sent to jail but spent a year on probation. It was the start of a calamitous decline. Two films ruined him financially in 1990: “The Cotton Club” and “The Two Jakes” – his sequel to “Chinatown”.

“The Cotton Club” particularly was a huge flop that was mired in production excesses that also included the murder of theatrical producer Roy Radin, a potential investor. Evans was implicated but never charged. Sinking further into debt, depression and cocaine addiction, Evans languished into obscurity for the rest of the decade, re-emerging with more financial disasters “Sliver”, starring Sharon Stone (1993); “Jade”, starring David

Caruso (1995), and “The Saint” (1997), starring Val Kilmer.

His old friend Jack Nicholson helped him get back on his feet financially and he produced some minor thrillers, but was basically destitute and had to sell his house Woodlawn – which at one time was owned by Greta Garbo.

In 1994, Evans published his autobiography “The Kid Stays in the Picture” which received some attention. But he suffered a series of debilitating strokes and needed extensive rehabilitation.

During the recovery period, amazingly enough, Evans dumbfounded everyone by defying his doctors in the Cedar Sinai hospital in a very big way.

With strict instructions to be extremely cautious about his health, and with warnings not to attempt a return to his self-destructive lifestyle. In 1998 he suddenly decided to marry the actress Catherine Oxenberg who was more than 30 years his junior. He promoted his cause by giving her a Jaguar and instructing her to drive it to the nearest jewellery store. He planned to fly with her to Cap d’Antibes from California.

But reality set in. The flight would be too taxing and too dangerous. Instead Continued on page 24

Continued from page 23 they wound up honeymooning in California. Reportedly he was not even able to get out of his bathtub. This fifth marriage was over after only a few days.

“It was my fault. My brain wasn’t working right.”

“The Kid Stays in the Picture” was made into a movie in 2002, narrated by Evans himself. It gave Evans a degree of cult status and he was a celebrity again. In May 2002, he was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Friends helped him out and he repurchased Woodlawn where he still lives.

Not learning from past experience, he married Leslie Ann Woodward on December 12, 2002. But this marriage, too, was doomed and over in less than two years. Fifteen months later he married Lady Victoria White. She, too, filed for divorce on June 16, 2006, citing irreconcilable differences.

Evans started receiving more film offers – among them “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” with Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, and somehow picked himself off the canvas. Today,

he is back on his feet again. He has recouped some of his losses. He is now 87 years old, seldom gives interviews, and prefers to ignore parties and live more as a recluse in the manicured confines of his beloved Woodlawn house.

He doesn’t even watch the Oscars any more, observing that the 2017 Oscars were “not the best year”. The recent stage adaptation of “The Kid Stays in the Picture” began a sold-out run in London’s West End earlier this year.

Directed by Simon McBurney, it opened at The Royal Court Theatre in May. Coproducer Barbara Broccoli, who is best known for overseeing the multi-billion dollar James Bond movie franchise, remembers Robert Evans: “As a young girl I would sort of gaze at him at places like Ma Maison, where he would be dressed in a white linen suit with his tan, and his glasses. He was such an unbelievably glamorous person, with always the most stunningly beautiful people around him. He was the embodiment of Hollywood – and the American dream.”

Robert Evans was a gambler. When he won, he won big. And when he lost, he lost big. He learned early on in his movie career that power was an important ingredient in the job, and he learned too that the key to a good film is the story. If you got the right story you would always be ahead of the money.

“Whatever indiscretions I’ve had in my life, I’ve paid for them pretty good. To live the life I’ve led and still be here ... let’s just say I’ve paid my car fare.”

He still has an office on the Paramount lot, and he is still in the picture.

When they made Robert Evans they threw away the mould. They certainly don’t make ‘em like that any more.

hether one is a churchgoer or a non-believer, what Father John Marsden, the priest at St John’s Church of Harbour Island, wrote in the December 1918 edition of The Quarterly Mission Paper (sent by the Anglican Church in the Bahamas to its supporters in England for over 100 years) is a real eye-opener: “The Harbour Island parish is looked upon as being extra lucky, because of its proximity to Nassau, and the fact that we

can get there with greater ease than from other out-islands, situated at greater distances.

That we can, but my return from the Synod, this year, was something to be remembered.

Owing to adverse circumstances I had to start by going to Governor’s Harbour, which was considerably out of my way, to say the least. However, thanks to the company of Fr Wade and Fr Pyfrom, the journey was merry enough, even though physical comfort was conspicuous by its absence.

We arrived at Governor’s Harbour at 5am on a Sunday morning, and spent a pleasant Sunday there, being able to have High Mass. My troubles began on Monday morning.

I succeeded in getting a boat to take me along to the Cove (Gregory Town), and left at 7am. There was practically no wind, and the weather was very hot. Progress was slow and, to add to our discomfort, a heavy shower of rain came on, about mid-day, and we were soaked.

Arriving at the Cove at 3pm, I succeeded in getting another boat to take me to a point from which I could reach home, and thought I was all right. But alas! I reached the harbour here at 6.30pm and, when I went to make a “smoke” – meaning a fire on the beach, to signal for a boat to come from Harbour Island, to take me across, a distance of about 4 miles – my matches

had all got damp, in the rain, and I could not light any fire.

So, there was no help for it, but to pass the night on the wharf, curled up in my rug, with my bag for a pillow; while the mosquitoes made a very fair imitation of a string band round my head!

Getting ready for the holidays

H

o, Ho, Ho, Merry Christmas,HappyThanksgiving, Happy New Year…..

Happy, happy, happy... but not necessarily for everyone. Many humans experience dreadful depression and sadness as the holiday season approaches, and others go off the deep end, eating, drinking, and doing just about everything in excess, so much so it takes them the entire month of January to get back on track.

But today, as every week, I am here to remind you of those who live in your home but do not completely understand what the raucous commotion is all about. I wish to talk to you about your pet during this uber festive period. Far too often people forget about them and their feelings, shut them in rooms, sometimes as small as bathrooms, for long hours to get them out of the way because some relative or other has come to share the season who is deathly afraid of dogs.

Let’s start with the fact that your dog (or cat for that matter) does not have a full grasp of the holidays. Thanksgiving is completely lost on him, even though an American holiday celebrating the arrival of the Pilgrim Fathers on American soil, I note more and more Bahamians feel compelled to add Thanksgiving to the long list of holidays that need to be celebrated. Thanksgiving food is much the same as Christmas food – rich, diverse – and served in copious amounts frequently all through the day.

Peas and rice, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, turkey skin, marshmallows, yams, plum pudding, brandy butter, to name a few, are not good for Fido or Fluffy. A small taste of the lean turkey and stuffing is fine, but stay away from the fat and grease. They will only serve to give your pet an upset stomach, with quite probably, disastrous effects during the night that will either wake you to go out at two in the morning, or worse still, leave a most unpleasant mess to clean up in the morning. No point in getting mad at your pet for making a mess. Oh no,

ike Stacy last week, Miller is a very mellow potcake. He’s about 10 months old and spent time in a foster home before coming to the Bahamas Humane Society. Miller is outgoing and playful. He gets along well with other dogs, though hasn’t yet been put to the test with cats. He likes children and adults alike. Do you have a spot in your heart for a youngish playful teenage pup? If so, Miller may be the right it for you. Come in to meet him or call 323-5138 for more information. Adoption hours are 11am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am to 4pm on Saturday.

The list of not acceptable food to feed your pet includes right at the top chocolate. Chocolate is toxic to dogs, even the smallest piece is totally unacceptable. In fact, chocolate can kill your dog. Do not be fooled by those sweet mournful eyes gazing at the bowl of chocolates. Please place them high up where he cannot reach them.

If your dog is amongst the lucky ones who do not have to be “put up” when guests arrive, be sure to tell your friends and family to not feed him the leftovers from the plate –no turkey bones, please. Your animal’s health depends on this warning.

Many, many,dogs go missing during the holiday season. The Bahamas Humane Society is bombarded with phone calls about lost dogs and found dogs. Fortunately, nowadays, with the amazing help of Facebook, it is much easier to reunite the missing pet with the owner if the pet has not been run over.

Look folks, a yard has a gate for a reason, so be sure to close it. If you aren’t going to close it, why did you put it there in the first place? Please ensure when your guests arrive that they close the gate behind them.

Fireworks are a nightmare for many dogs. I have a potcake who climbs the walls at the first “bang” or “pop”. For some reason we appear to have fireworks for just about every holiday now. I was amazed at how many fireworks we had to get Boss through on Halloween night.

Ahead of us is the worst night of them all: New Year’s Eve. But it does not have to be that disastrous. I am suggesting that dog owners start thinking now where they will put their dog when they go out on New Year’s Eve. Find a room, not too big, put his bed there and some water. If possible, turn on the radio. Get him used to that special safe place now. When you go out, even if he is still afraid, he will be safe. Dogs get so scared at the sound of fireworks that many of them panic and bolt. They simply take off with no plan and then get lost. If you don’t want to shut them in the house, then put them in the garage. Unless you have a very high and secure fence or wall I do not advise leaving them in the garden.

Yes, it’s a festive season, but with a little consideration and planning it can be a pleasant and happy season for everybody in the house with no drama or inconveniences.

Treat your pet as a member of the family, with as much consideration and love as you lavish on the others.
