REMEMBER, REMEMBER…

WE all remember the fifth of November.

It’s the anniversary of the failed Guy Fawkes plot.

On November 5, 1605, Guy Fawkes was arrested for plotting to blow up the House of Lords and King James 1 in the UK as part of a Catholic/Protestant conflict.

Some of us also remember the night an out building on the Eastern foreshore in Nassau burst into flames after a firework from a nearby Guy Fawkes party landed on the roof.

With the wind raging from the northeast, a volunteer was overcome with smoke inhalation as he single-handedly battled the blaze.

Fortunately, the fire was put out before it spread to the main house and the volunteer recovered.

Guy Fawkes Night is fun, but fireworks are dangerous and precautions must be taken for the protection of people, especially children, and property.

Your home is probably the most important investment you’ll ever make. Don’t let it go up in flames.

Have fun, but make sure you read the warning labels before igniting fireworks and designate a couple of adults to set them off.

They won¹t like it, but teens using fireworks should do so only under adult supervision.

DON’T STUFF THE GUY! Do not let your child stuff fireworks in a Guy! I can’t believe how many kids are able to get away

with this dangerous practise. It’s an accident waiting to happen.

Have a hose with good water pressure or a fire extinguisher at hand to douse any sparks. Call the fire department immediately if there’s a fire.

Never relight a ‘dud’ firework – it could still be live. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.

Soak spent fireworks with water before placing them in an outdoor garbage can.

Never attempt to alter or modify fireworks and use them only in the manner intended.

OUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS Let’s not forget our pets.

They are terrified of fireworks. Every year, dogs run away because they’re petrified by the noise of fireworks and some can’t find their way back home.

It’s best to keep your pets inside or in a comfortable and secure outdoor shelter at night.

Every year the Bahamas Humane Society reminds pet owners to put collars with ID tags on their pets in case they go missing.

DID YOU KNOW? Decorations are often the first thing to catch fire?

Instead of using candles or torches to decorate walkways or in Jack O¹ Lanterns, use luminara candles or solar lights.
