Youth warriors get muddy, display teamwork

UNNING through an obstacle course is one thing, but having to crawl on your belly with your face buried in mud is quite another. MudRun 242, held in-conjunction with the Ministry of Youth Sports & Culture, hosted this edition of Mud Run in celebration of Youth Month.

Marcia Knowles, proprietor of MudRun 242, said the event was held to celebrate the young people of the country. As October is recognised as Youth Month, numerous events have taken place over the past few weeks to highlight the country’s younger citizens.

MudRun 242 joined in the celebrations by providing youngsters between the ages of 16 and 25 with complimentary access to its 5k course that required Bahamian mud warriors to not only get muddy, but also show a willingness and determination to get through all the different stages, no matter how difficult.

“We encouraged and reinforced teamwork with the participants. Points were obtained by completing

Ms Knowles explained.

“No one gets left; they helped each other complete obstacles. Points would not be awarded unless groups were together at all times. These were just some of the rules we stressed. We wanted to show them the importance of working together, the benefits of working together, and how much fun they would have doing so.”

The Mud Pit, she said, was one of the things that attracted many participants to the event. However, once in the Mud Pit, they quickly discovered how hard it was to move through it.

“The reactions on their faces when they found out they had to get on their bellies and crawl through over 20 feet of mud was priceless. For me, in celebrating Youth Month, we encouraged all participants to work together. To see them pushing, helping, motivating and encouraging their team members to complete obstacles was the highlight for me at this event,” said Ms Knowles.

“Wine of course. There is nothing like a glass of red wine – Cabernet, Merlot or Pino – to unwind at the end of the week. Friday evenings are booked for red wine.”

“Beach... every day if I could. My life goal is to live in a home where I can walk out to the beach daily, even if I have to cross the street.”

“My baby boy, Santana Justice. I can hardly remember life without him.

He showed up quite unexpectedly and turned my life upside down, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

interview At 90 years of age, Beverly Wallace Whitfield exudes wisdom and beauty. She has stood the test of time and has contributed meaningfully to the Bahamas and its people. She talks to Felicity Ingraham about how traditional values and good parenting can stem the tide of violence in the country.

everly Wallace Whitfield, MVO, is the widow of the founder of the Free National Movement, nation-builder Sir Cecil Wallace Whitfield, but she is also a nation-builder in her own right. Tribune Weekend visited Mrs Wallace Whitfield this week – she was still in high spirits after partying last weekend with her sorority sisters of Delta Sigma Theta who threw her a lavish 90th birthday bash. Her birthday was in September, but the honours and well wishes are still coming in, and Ms Beverley, as I affectionately call her, is full of life and vigour.

It’s amazing to see how strong Ms Beverly is – resilient in spirit, still in possession of two thirds of her teeth, including her wisdom teeth, and taking care of herself at home with all of her faculties still fully functioning. Her memory is excellent and her conversation is rich in wisdom and the experience of nine decades. She is “thankful to God” for giving her the strength to still be active in the community. As this article appears today, Ms Beverly is scheduled to conduct an etiquette class at the Eugene Dupuch Law School.

Just a few years ago, she was zip-lining in the South American mountains, and today she is gearing up for yet another

travel adventure. Age doesn’t seem to have the same meaning for her as it does for others. She is still busy making plans for activities for the Christmas season straight into next year.

To celebrate her milestone birthday, Ms Beverly planned a three-part event.

First, she travelled to Virginia – the birth state of her mother – for a family retreat.

Next, a special church mass was held in

her honour at Holy Cross Church. The final event, a birthday party with “all the girls” turned out to be a “smashing time” to bring the celebrations to end.

But really, for her, the celebration of life happens every day.

Ms Beverly is passionate about helping others in any way she can, and even after becoming a victim of violence last year has not deterred her sowing seeds

of hope and inspiration into the lives of others.

For her, the key to turning around the rising trends of violence and crime in the country lies with parenting. She grew up in Nassau, East Bay Street, near downtown in her family’s historic Worrel residence, also known as “Laurelhurst by the Sea”. to take up lodging in the hotels of the day. For this reason, her mother Mamie Irlene and father Gascoyne Worrell turned their home into a lovely guest house to accommodate those turned away from the major hotels.

The Worrels were close friends with Sir Etienne Dupuch, founder of The Tribune, who became her godfather – a man she recalls as being “very kind”. Sir Etienne, she said, used to marvel at the fact that her mother was in her 70s when she began building a set of apartments. Today, Ms Beverly reflects on how much she is like her mother – a woman who did not let her age deter her from any of her goals.

As a young mother of three boys – Cecil, Kenneth and Paul – and the wife of a young Cecil Wallace, Ms Beverly took the chance to move the entire family to London during her husband’s time at law school. She saw the larger picture and made the sacrifice necessary to help him become the man who is today remembered as one of the most noted names in Bahamian history.

Ms Beverly wants to see this kind of attitude to be permeated throughout society. The values and principles which were taught to her in childhood are still working for her today.

“Good manners and the proper way of treating each other comes from the family,” said Ms Beverly, “It’s something you have to get from you are little.”

“It’s not just ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, and so on. It’s a way of life. If children get the proper training in their homes from the time of their birth and it’s nonstop, I feel it will find fertile ground. The young people of today are left too much on their own and they are not getting proper training. Electronics – cellphones and tablets – they are taking the place of human beings and human contact. We are not getting good results.”

She also made a plea to the young Bahamians involved in gangs: “The young people have to desire change for themselves. The gangs are not the answer. You may feel that you are substituting it for family life, but it’s negative and leads to violence. Don’t feel the gang is your family. It isn’t.

You are going down the wrong road.”

lives with. Neighbours aren’t looking out for one another, especially the children, she added, noting that “we are denying valuable friendships and losing opportunities for meaningful memories.”

Her warning came as she recalled her own harrowing encounter with two burglars who invaded her home and accosted her late last year: “You are going down the wrong road. You could wind up like the two young men who came in my house last year about this time and robbed me of all my jewellery. What were they going to do with it? Turn it into a couple dollars? How

She has her own life to show as testament to this truth. She dedicated most of her life to the service of others. She will go down in history as the first secretary for the first Bahamian Governor General, Sir Milo Butler, at Government House. She served on the Independence

Secretariat to head Public Service Division of 1973 Independence Celebrations.

She was recalled from retirement to head the Protocol Division of the prestigious Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting held in Nassau in 1985, the only time it was held in the Bahamas. In 2009, she travelled to Freeport to train the public service personnel working on the Commonwealth Local Government Officials conference, welcoming delegates from all over the world.

As an educator, she served as lecturer and then vice principal of Nassau Technical College in Oakes Field, designed for post-secondary students. There, she introduced practical office machines and language labs for more hands-on exposure.

Over the years, Ms Beverly became involved as a trainer in specialty subjects for many government agencies, churches, schools, civic organisations and individuals. She has been volunteering for the Red Cross for decades.

She served as two-term president and serves on many of the organisation’s committees to this day.

An avid sports enthusiast, she has attended all CARIFTA Games since she was introduced to them in 1996, and is a member of the fundraising committee for the Bahamas Amateur Athletic Association.

Ms Beverly holds a BA degree in Sciences from Talladega College, whose alumni association honoured her. She also holds a Certificate in Education from Kingston-Upon-Hull College of Education in London and a Post-graduate Diploma in Secretarial Studies from Strathclyde University, Scotland.

She was made a member of the Royal Victorian Order by Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II in a personal presentation on board the Royal Yacht Britannia on the occasion of the Queen’s 1977 visit as a part of her Silver Jubilee Celebrations.

She was also honoured by Holy Cross Church as well as the Ministry of Tourism, and was recently inducted into the Pan Hellenic Council’s Hall of Fame.

This 90-year-old living legend loves her country and has made lasting friendships with people from around the world through the Ministry of Tourism’s “People to People” programme.

She desires to see all Bahamians to be invested in their families and their nation, so that the country can become a better one for it.

‘The Drunken Chef’ hosts pop up restaurant

The Drunken Chef’ set up their unique pop up restaurant at The Art Room.

HERE were many scary events to attend this past Halloween weekend, but those who were in search something a little different flocked to The Art Room on East Bay Street where ‘The Drunken Chef’ two-day pop up restaurant made its temporary home.

The concept was created by Bahamian Chef Jared Forbes and friend Jeffery Edgecombe.

Last Friday and Saturday, they invited guests to experience unique food options in a relaxed environment.

“This all started out when we were asked by the Ministry of Tourism to take part in festival events like the Goombay Summer Festival, Junkanoo in June, and more. Jeffery joined over a year ago and we talked about doing a pop up menu, as we had a following that was asking for more of The Drunken Chef,” said Chef Jared.

He told Tribune Weekend the goal is to see the event grow and attract an even bigger following as the concept continues to develop with is offerings of food and signature beverages.

“The pop up restaurant presents ‘The Drunken Chef’ on a different level than food provided at festivals, and we want to showcase the fact that we can also infuse Bahamian food into fine dining options with a twist.

This allows people to gain a better respect for our food and ingredients,” said Chef Jared.

On the menu there were ‘Drunken Chef’ faves such as the ‘Ting Um’, blackened shrimp, roasted corn, pickled

fennel and watermelon juice; ‘Stiff Toe Gang’, a salad of julienne cabbage, apples, blueberries, red onions, tomatoes, micro greens and garlic Dijon dressing; ‘What The Hell’, lobster mac and cheese, spicy sausage and red peppers, and ‘Chew Ya Bone’, guava baby back ribs.

Drinks included the creatively named ‘No Broughtupsy’, a cocktail of hibiscus infused pomegranate juice, spiced rum, thyme, infused tequila, lime, raw sugar and smoked Hawaiian black lava sea salt, and the ‘Smoking Crabbie’, made from raspberry ginger beer, Macorix rum, coconut water, Nassau Royale, cotton candy vodka, cranberry juice, rosemary and apple cider.

Chef Jared believes the pop up restaurant approach breathes a breath of fresh air into the country’s social scene, as it offers a fun, safe and new environment to dine and mingle.

“It also provides jobs for some 21 persons involved in this culinary experience. My advice to young aspiring chefs would be to always follow your dreams, be consistent, keep educating your self in your field of work, think out the box, don’t be basic, travel and gain new food experiences and everything with fall in place,” he said.

A little bit of rain...a lot of wine and art

ESPITE a bit of “liquid sunshine”, as organisers called the rain showers, this year’s Bahamas National Trust Wine and Art Festival celebrated a successful first in its 27-year history – hosting not one, but two days of fun and culture.

Back on the scene were the highly anticipated wine samples provided by Bristol Wines’ Fall selections, culinary demonstrations, the many art pieces on display throughout the Retreat Gardens. There were also new activities such as a kid’s retreat and live performances provided by The Spank Band, Geno D, Nehemiah, Wendi, Bodine, Julien Believe, Judah Tha Lion and Son del Solar.

“Celebrating the festival this year is fantastic because for an event to really have achieved the success that Wine and Art has – and 27 years is a long time – we are happy that people look forward to it and they have it jotted down on their Fall social calendars. We are happy to be included in that. We want to continue to engage the public, bring them into the park and let them see the beautiful space at the Retreat Gardens,” said Dominique Martin, acting director of development at the BNT. Above all, Dominique said festival is a great way for the BNT to hopefully educate people on the importance of the national park system and the work of the National Trust.

“The BNT is non-profit and our work is supported by philanthropy and fundraising efforts. The festival is one of our fundraisers. Many people that attend the festival don’t realise that the Retreat is actually one of four national parks in New Providence, and one of 32 in the national park system, all of which are managed by the BNT. We endeavour to educate persons regarding the parks, and we are doing more of that this year,” said Dominque.

She also spoke highly of the many Bahamian artisans and vendors who chose to display, saying the Wine and Art Festival is probably one of the largest organised opportunities where local artists get to show their work.

Artists, art lovers and wine enthusiasts flocked to the Retreat Gardens for the 27th annual Wine and Art Festival.

Flying in from Andros to participate as an art vendor for the eighth time, Judith Papillon’s colourful display offered a bright spot in the gardens.

“I am obsessed with oceans and skies, and sometimes you look at the end of the ocean and you don’t know where the sky starts and where the ocean finishes.

So that is basically what my art is all about. I have always painted, and this is really my passion. This festival has definitely grown and I donate a painting every year for raffling. It is going very well despite the weather. I actually sold a painting while a client was stuck under the tent due to showers. There is music and live bands, just fabulous,” said Judith.

Rionda Godet, proprietor at Ridge Farms, displayed the company’s popular jams, pepper sauces and pepper jellies, but with a twist, as she adds wine to the mixtures.

“For this particular event with the Bahamas National Trust we came out with our wine line. We are featuring our Cabernet Sauvignon with rosemary and allspice. This goes great with your lamb and turkeys, and white meats generally.

your cracked lobster, chicken fingers, and more. We also have our Merlot, Moscato, Zinfandel pineapple and so much more,” she said.

Rionda said many of the festival’s patrons were surprised by the innovation behind making jellies out of wine.

“If you naturally love wine, you are just going to gravitate towards this. They can be used as a dip or an hors d’oeuvres. We have a line for scaredy cats, for people that don’t like peppers, and for those who love spice, we have choices for them. This is my second time participating and the feedback has been marvellous,” said Rionda.

The second day of activities on Sunday brought the introduction of ParticiPAINT, a unique, interactive art experience provided by the art trio known as 3rilogy.

3rilogy members Steffan Davis and Jamaal Rolle gave festival-goers the opportunity to make their mark by contributing to one, or several, group canvases which were strategically placed throughout the gardens.

Just after receiving a complimentary glass of wine, festival patron Veronica Deal decided to take up the 3rilogy challenge and she and a friend started painting on a nearby canvas.

As a first-time painter, Veronica told Tribune Weekend she was more than eager to give it a try.

“When I initially saw the Wine and Art flyer I was curious to find out what the second day was all about. When I found out 3rilogy would be a part of it I was excited, because I attended one of their ParticiPAINT events before. What better way to paint on canvas than at the Wine and Art festival,” said Veronica.

Keshia Robinson, another festival-goer, believes the interactive ParticiPAINT experience provided an interesting conversation piece for art lovers.

“It’s special, because when people ask who created it, I can say I did with hundreds of others,” said Keshia.

OUTH from all around Bahamas who have been excelling in their respective fields were awarded for their outstanding efforts during the recently held National Youth Awards.

The gala event, now in its 31st year, was presented by the Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture to honour the work and dedication of one 157 young persons throughout the country. The star-studded event was held at Atlantis.

BTC, a company that has demonstrated its commitment to building youth, partnered with the Ministry of Youth for the awards with an $20,000 investment.

BTC Interim CEO Dexter Cartwright previously said: “We believe in excellence. This is our second year partnering with the Ministry of Youth to celebrate the achievements of a number of young persons throughout the country. BTC is committed to supporting a wide range of youth activities. We congratulate all of the nominees, as to be nominated is a significant milestone.”

Director of Youth K Darron Turnquest said: “We are excited about this partnership with BTC. This is the fourth year where we have recognised hundreds of young people in our society that are showing up and making a difference. This is one of the avenues that we use to demonstrate to our young people that we are indeed proud of their accomplishments.”

Some of the awards categories included entrepreneurship, community volunteerism, arts, culture and sports.

Today, the National Youth Awards programme has expanded to include eight “Diamond Awards”, The Youth Ally and Youth Organisation Awards; the Director of Youth, Minister of Youth and Prime Minister’s Cups.

The show launched last weekend and is set to feature eight to 10 episodes in total, airing every Friday at 8pm on Cindy Central’s Facebook page and on the ‘Cindy The Creative’ YouTube Channel.

Covering topics that are relatable, funny and informative, Cindy Central will tap into the memories and history of many Bahamian viewers.

“As a writer my intent is to create awareness on social issues by opening the floor for discussion by presenting it in a fashion that may be more digestible. Comedy is the vehicle in which I accomplish this. I’ve been coined as the one woman wonder because I play multiple characters such as reporters, a pastor and a gynaecologist. She is inspired by entertainers like Issa Rae – the American actress who created the ‘Awkward Black Girl’ YouTube series, and consequently the HBO show “Insecure”. Her mother, Freda Mullings, and two friends,

Madeleine Williams and Shanel Mullings, also serve as inspirational figures in her journey thus far.

“I’ve always wanted to produce my own original content. I had a vision for myself and I’m passionate about the preservation of Bahamian culture and history by any means. In this case, my method is through media and comedy. My overall goal is to see ‘Cindy Central’ reach at least three seasons. I also want to use my show as a platform to provide opportunity to showcase the talents of others, whether that be through writing a sketch, acting in a video, or simply holding the camera. The country has an abundance of creativity, innovation and talent that I have made it a responsibility of mine to tap into as much as possible,” she told Tribune Weekend.

Excited to see the reactions to the show’s launch, Frecinda said last Friday’s episode highlighted all of the 1980s and 90s babies out there.

“Within the web series there is also a reality TV style segment called ‘The Nassau News’, which is centered around the lives of the staff that work there, including the well known reporters Bad’Ann Boujee and Remy Dowdeswell that my audience are familiar with from my social media. This segment gives them a deeper look into their characters and the persons they work with. There’s nothing like an office drama,” said Frecinda.

She encourages readers to “like”, comment, follow and subscribe to ‘Cindy Central’ to keep up to date with the show and her other ventures.

“I’m hoping to have a lot of positive feedback from my audience. They have been waiting a few months for the series to air, so it would be wonderful to exceed their expectations,” said Frecinda.

Documentary of ‘visionary entrepreneur’ receives praise

A

year after its world premiere, the documentary film “The Amazing Life & Times of Austin T Levy” is still receiving accolades from viewers all around the world.

Produced by Kenneth Proudfoot, the film tells the story of Austin T Levy, a visionary and socially conscious entrepreneur who established the first chain of convenience stores in the Western Hemisphere right here in the Bahamas, and who jump-started Eleuthera’s farming industry.

In 1909, Levy, then a 29-year-old wool commission agent from New York City, leased a small textile mill in Greenville, Rhode Island, from the Waterhouse family. This lease marked the founding of Levy’s Stillwater Worsted Mills and the beginning of an amazing transformation of how people worked, lived and prospered in the rural town of Burrillville in northwest Rhode Island.

Over the next three decades, Levy would buy, build and operate a total of 11 mills in three states, employing more than 2,000 people. He pioneered paid two-week vacations, profit-sharing plans, and a generous employee stock ownership programme. Most importantly, Levy recognised the inseparable relationship between the textile mills, workers and their families, and the survival and prosperity of the communities where his mills were sited.

He realised that wage rates, even more than production and profits, were directly tied to the survival and prosperity of the local economy. With this thought always in the back of his mind, Levy kept his mills operating throughout the Great Depression of the 1930s, one of the very few operators to do so.

At other times, when weekly textile production increased due to improved technology and labour hours were necessarily reduced, Levy raised the hourly wage so his workers would continue to earn the same amount of weekly wages.

Levy readily recognised that his people were the key to the company’s profitable growth. He constantly praised his management team, line

Levy also had many other interests.

He was an athlete and an avid tennis player, playing well into his 60s. He was an accomplished musician who excelled at the violin and viola. He loved music history and owned a 1709 Stradivarius.

Perhaps more amazing was Levy’s work on the island of Eleuthera.

Introduced to the Bahamas through his wife’s family who owned a home in Nassau, Levy encountered another project to challenge his business acumen.

He found many of the island nation’s people, still subjects of the British

Empire, with little or no access to fresh food, including vegetables, milk, eggs, and poultry.

After considerable study of the Bahamas soil, weather, and availability of farm equipment and other tools, he arranged the purchase of 2,000 acres on the island of Eleuthera in 1936.

Levy then purchased and shipped earth moving and farm equipment to the island, carefully bred and shipped a herd of dairy cows from Harrisville, built chicken coops, and hired local people to plant, harvest, and process fresh food. Levy later ordered special boats built to ship his fresh milk, eggs, and ice cream to Nassau. These boats made two trips daily to the capital city on New Providence Island, arriving at Levy’s company pier and warehouse in Nassau Harbour. He built 10 milk stands around the city where residents could purchase his fresh milk, eggs, and ice cream on a daily basis, creating what many consider to have been first chain of convenience stores in the region.

Less known was Levy’s interest and activities in Republican politics in Rhode Island. While a life-long Republican, he did not get involved in Rhode Island Republican party activities until 1934. In 1950, he ran in the US Senate race, but was defeated by the Democratic candidate. The Levys returned to Nassau to rest and recuperate following the exhausting campaign, but then returned to Rhode Island. Levy became ill soon after and passed away on November 24, 1951. His widow, June Rockwell Levy, continued her work in healthcare, public works, and the operation of their plantation in Hatchet Bay, Eleuthera.

The documentary, parts of which were researched in Eleuthera and filmed on location in the Bahamas, has been show several times on PBS to rave reviews.

The DVD includes the 55-minute documentary, plus another hour plus of interviews and scenes from Harrisville, Nassau and Eleuthera. It is available from the ‘austinlevyfilm’ Facebook page.

ahamian model Vanessa Leach’s career is on the rise. After walking for a show in New York’s Madison Square Garden, the Nassau native was invited to participate in the recent Los Angeles Fashion Week.

LA Fashion week is a bi-annual event hosted in southern California.

It is now a permanent feature on the international Fashion Week circuit alongside London, Paris, Milan, New York and Tokyo.

During the event, some of the season’s newest collections are showcased to media, buyers, industry elite and private clientele.

Usually held at the beginning of October, the week culminated with Vanessa once again walking for bigname, international fashion houses.

Vanessa, whose modelling career started when she was 12 years old at the Yodephy Dance and Modelling Academy here in Nassau, was invited to participate in the showcase earlier this year.

Having worked with Pia Rolle at the PTG Modeling Agency in the Bahamas and recruited to represent the Bahamas at the International Talent Showcase in Boca Raton, Florida, where she won numerous awards, a representative from the agency thought Vanessa’s participation in international runway shows would bolster her career.

“Earlier this year, David Dion of PTG Modeling Agency contacted me and told me I was invited to New York Fashion Week to walk in the shows.

As you would imagine, I was overwhelmed with excitement. During my time in New York, I walked for Project Runway designer Patricia Michaels and Zoan Ash, based in Bangladesh. It was everything I thought it would be and

more, my first international runway show was at Madison Square Garden,” she said.

After her experience in New York, Vanessa was invited to LA Fashion Week a month later. There, she walked for Filipino couture designer David Tupaz and Chinese designer Wang Li Ling.

She also walked for Italian shoe designer Pamela Quinzi and the label Romeo + Juliet Couture.

“The experience itself is definitely one for the books.

I have met so many amazing people, forged great friendships and explored a bit. The most recent time I went to LA, I had the opportunity to hike to the Hollywood sign with my friends after nightfall. It was breathtaking to see the city lights; we even met some awesome people at the top,” she said.

Vanessa is very proud to have overcome her shy nature and to have come this far in her career.

After graduating St Andrew’s High School, Vanessa studied at Palm Beach Atlantic University with a

double major in graphic design and marketing.

After the competing in Boca Raton she decided to take modelling more seriously.

“Initially, I was attracted to modelling because I enjoyed the make-up, the constant outfit changes and the glam.

Over time I saw that it was much more than that. I realised I was in love with the process of creating. I loved the idea of dreaming up a concept and the process of bringing it to life.

The photographers, make-up artists, hairstylists, designers and videographers that I have worked with made me realise something so important and it is, it’s the process that makes you love what you do, not necessarily the end result,” she told Tribune Weekend.

Vanessa added: “Through modelling I overcame many obstacles and have pushed myself to do things I never thought I would be able to.

These days I am described as being more reserved than shy, but I’m glad to have conquered many challenges and I look forward to overcoming many more.”

Karin says: “Even though she looks a bit like an android, I’m loving the bob with the bangs.

And I love this unusually structured dress. It’s just different enough to make one take notice. The black and white colour block looks great as usual.”

Farah says: “I am in with love with this look on Kerry. The majority of times I have seen her on the carpet she always looks so princess-like. But this ensemble with the colour block dress and pointed-toe black pumps is something different – something special, something edgy.”

Karin says: “It’s like she is wearing two dresses that were spliced together. Maybe if it had been completely strapless it would have worked better.

But that sleeve and poufy shoulder piece look awful.

And the skirt, although much simpler, is also nothing to write home about.”

Farah says: “What an odd choice of a dress for La La. This dress flattens her chest and is very ill-fitting. And whose work pumps did she borrow for this red carpet appearance?”

Karin says: “Paris is like at least two years late in trotting out this style that everyone and their ma has worn. All that money and she couldn’t even find a dress where the nude lining matches her skin.

And what the heck are those finger-less gloves?”

Farah says: “Maybe Paris was aiming for a classier look.

However, I am not certain this overdone see-through nude gown was the right pick.

I would have also preferred seeing her hair pulled back or in an updo. Way too much is going on here.”

Karin says: “She’s a model, so we expect her to be a bit more adventurous with her style.

But this ‘dress’ is basically a top and the jacket looks like a giant, patchwork lamp shade. I hope she’s wearing underwear! The only thing I sorta like are the shoes.”

Farah says: “I like the unexpectedness of Grace’s attire – the platform pumps worn with socks, paired with the dress and oversized coat.

The coat is such a statement, and because it is huge, you can overlook the fact her dress is really short. Or maybe she is just that tall?”

Karin says: “One would expect more from a designer.

Neither the vaguely Asianinspired structure nor the floral pattern are all that original. The design kinda swallows her up. Not to mention, her extremely heavy eye make-up and messy ‘do make her look a lil’ witchy.”

Farah says: “I thought we left florals back in the Summer/ Spring fashion season? I guess floral for Fall was a must for Stacey. I am unimpressed by her over-the-top smokey eye and that unattractive hairdo.”

Bahamian Oral Ellis makes his ‘Black-ish’ debut

ahamian actor Oral Ellis made his first appearance on ABC’s hit show Black-ish

this week.

The Bimini native, who shared the good news exclusively with Tribune Weekend last Friday, said the role could be just the breakthrough he needs.

The emerging actor who has Hollywood stardom sight shares the spotlight on the show with big-name stars such as comedian Anthony Anderson, Tracey Ellis Ross, and Laurence Fishburne He appeared on the third episode of Black-ish’s season four that aired on Tuesday.

Black-ish follows the life of Dre Johnson (Anthony Anderson) who appears to have it all: a great job, a beautiful wife,

Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross), four kids and a big home in a classy neighbourhood, but as a black man, he begins to question whether all his success has brought too much cultural assimilation for his family. With the help of his father (special guest star Laurence Fishburne), Dre begins to try to create a sense of ethnic identity for the members of his family that will allow them to honour their background while preparing them to embrace the future.

In episode three of season four, Oral plays a new high school student. His character appears intimidating at first but soon viewers find out that he is a “big nerd who loves talking about Harry Potter, Marvel movies and stuff. I’m basically a lovable giant,” said Oral.

As of now, he appears only in one episode of Black-ish, however his fingers are crossed his character will be reoccurring.

Harry Potter exhibit marks 20th anniversary of first book

arry Potter fans owe a debt of gratitude to Alice Newton.

Alice was eight years old when her father, a Bloomsbury Publishing executive, brought home a new manuscript for her to read.

“The excitement in this book made me feel warm inside,” she scrawled in a note to her dad. “I think it is probably one of the best books an 8/9 year old could read.”

Based on this glowing review, Bloomsbury published “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” launching a literary juggernaut that brought magic to a generation of children.

Alice’s penciled note is part of the British Library’s new exhibition, “Harry Potter: A History of Magic.”

The show, which coincides with the 20th anniversary of the publication of JK Rowling’s first book, is an unabashed celebration of the stories and their antecedents.

“There are some rich historical traditions behind the magic in the Harry

Potter stories, which JK Rowling was aware of,” said Alexander Lock, one of the exhibit curators, who added that he was impressed with Rowling’s ability to layer information and offer depth.

“They go into the stories and make them so rich.”

The exhibit, which opens Friday, includes Rowling’s outline for the book, her personal drawings of characters and a map of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

It also looks at magic and the nature of belief, revealing that many of the things Harry Potter fans thought were imaginary were actually based in fact — or folklore. It includes rare books and manuscripts from around the world, together with cauldrons, broomsticks, crystal balls and potion manuals that offer insight into Rowling’s inspiration and how the books came to be.

“I’ve taken liberties with folklore,” Rowling says in a video that opens the show.

The show is divided into rooms based on the subjects studied at Hogwarts, the setting for Rowling’s novels

stories, with historical objects illustrating the scholarship behind the narrative.

The potions section, for example, features a Bronze Age/Iron Age Battersea Cauldron on loan from the British Museum. It sits beneath cauldron light fixtures that flicker in the subdued light and offer the viewer a chance to get into the Halloween-like aura of it all.

There is also a discussion of A MEMBER of British Library staff alchemy, the medieval forerunner of points to the Philosopher’s Stone on the chemistry, and features the Ripley 16th-century Ripley Scroll. Being hosted at the British Library meant the exhibition featured some amazing books — on palmistry, tea leaf reading and, of course, witches.

Tanya Kirk, another co-curator, said working on the exhibit gave her a whole new appreciation of witches.

“I think all of the things I learned about witches is that they get quite a bad rap through history, and it was quite hard to find positive accounts,” she said with a laugh. “The Harry Potter books have done a lot to HARRY Potter books published in several languages at the “Harry Potter - A History change that.”

Pricking out seedlings Many sensible people will be starting their vegetable season during November and will have far more conducive conditions to work in than those diehards that sowed their first tomato seeds in mid-August, says Jack Hardy.

O

f course, the sensible people will not be enjoying vine ripened tomatoes during December (or January or February), but they will have missed also some sweaty work sessions and the higher probability of plant failure.

Those of us who started early are now rejoicing in the cool nights of late October and early November that bring

Successful pricking identifies a confident and capable gardener. the right fruit-setting temperatures for our tomatoes. We cannot rest on our laurels, however, because whenever you plant your tomato seeds it takes four months until fruit picking time. The successors to your present tomatoes should already be sturdy and approaching the transplant stage.

Peppers, depending on variety, produce fruits in three months on average.

Although pepper plants will grow and produce into and maybe through summer we should be planting extras while we can. If you have bell peppers in place now you may wish to grow long peppers such as Anaheim or Cubanelle, or maybe those miniature sweet peppers that grow in abundance and can be popped whole into soups, stews and souses. If you are into hot peppers there is a massive number to choose from. Try a variety you have never grown before to add to your favourites.

If you grow tomatoes, peppers and your essential herbs all you need thereafter is a selection of lettuce and greens to ensure you have the makings of a healthy and delicious diet – plus a wicker basket and a pair of scissors.

Now is the ideal time to get your petunias and impatiens under way. If you use recessed plastic seed trays you will need to sprinkle several seeds into each compartment. I prefer to use an

open tray about two inches deep and well drained. I fill the tray with fine potting mix with a top half inch or so of seed starting mix then water well using a mist spray. I sprinkle the seeds sparsely and evenly over the surface of the soil and press the soil down lightly with my knuckles to ensure the seeds have good soil contact. I then add a fine layer of potting mix, a layer so fine the seeds are covered but sunlight can penetrate. The seed tray must be misted morning and evening to ensure there is no drying out.

Once the seedlings are above ground comes the process of ‘pricking’, removing them from the seed tray to an individual three-inch pot. There is no particular size that the seedlings should be but I find that between one and two inches in plant diameter is about right for me. I use an old cheap paring knife for pricking. I dig up a clump with maybe four or five seedlings and separate them very carefully trying to lose as little growing medium from the roots as possible.

For each seedling I make a right sized hole in the potting mix in a small pot with my finger and settle the seedling in place. I then work the top of the growing medium from the perimeter of the pot to the base of the seedling and tamp down with my fingertips very lightly.

should be misted twice a day for about a week, then once a day. The ideal time to transplant from the 3-inch pot to a final large pot (or the garden) is when flower buds form. The whole process should take place in full sun so there will be no need for hardening, or adjusting the plants to new light conditions.

Successful pricking identifies a confident and capable gardener. Confidence comes with experience and the best learning experience is failure. After failure you analyse and repeat, and in the end you get things right. Rather like riding a bicycle, once you have succeeded you never look back. What was impossible soon becomes easy and natural.

Gardening is the same. The process of planting a seed and raising a plant is very simple but has procedures to follow. Almost any seed from tiny thyme to colossal coconut can grow by just placing it on top of soil and leaving it. That is the way nature works but the germination rate becomes very low.

Planting a seed too deep is a common beginner’s error. If you must, err on the side of shallowness. Some seeds require a degree of light in order to germinate so should be covered with the minimum of growing medium. Watering at this stage should always be done with a mist spray.

Liquid fertilizer is a blessing for young seedlings. I keep spray bottles of weak liquid fertilizer (a tablespoon to a gallon of water) using regular Miracle-Gro for most plants, Miracid for my strawberries and pineapples, and Tomato for potted vegetables. Plants in containers should only be fed with liquid or timerelease fertilizers. Granular fertilizer is for the open garden, too high in salts for a restricted space.

Seedlings can be sprayed once a week, wetting the foliage and giving a few extra squirts on the top of the soil. Spraying – and every other form of applying fertilizer - should be accomplished immediately after regular watering. Never add any type of fertilizer to dry soil.

If you start your seeds in trays in shade you must harden them to acclimate to full sun. This is done by moving the trays to a position where they receive an extra hour of sun each day for a week. Again, this a simple task but one that must be done with due diligence.

etflix is exploring a “House of Cards” spinoff as the show’s final season nears amid controversy surrounding star Kevin Spacey.

The streaming channel, which reportedly is weighing different concepts for the spinoff, said Monday that the upcoming sixth season will be the last for “House of Cards.”

The announcement of the Emmy-winning political satire’s end came amid fallout from Spacey’s

alleged sexual advances toward a 14-year-old actor in the 1980s. But Netflix had already decided to end the show and was pursuing a spinoff.

Spacey has apologized for the incident which he said he doesn’t recall but would have stemmed from “drunken behavior.” He also spoke publicly for the first time about being gay.

The final “House of Cards” episodes are in production, with a release date yet to be announced.

‘Stranger Things’ actor denied US entry over drugs A LAW enforcement official says “Stranger Things” actor Charlie Heaton was denied entry into the US last week after trace amounts of cocaine were found in his luggage when he arrived in Los Angeles.

The official said Friday a customs canine sniffed Heaton’s luggage when he arrived at Los Angeles International Airport last Saturday and officers found traces of cocaine.

The official said Heaton, a British citizen, was refused entry

into the US at the airport and returned to London. He wasn’t arrested because the amount wasn’t enough to warrant any charges.

The official couldn’t discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Heaton stars as Jonathan Byers in the Netflix supernatural drama.

MTV reviving its ‘Jersey Shore’ franchise, southern style MTV is reviving its “Jersey Shore” franchise, this time down South.

The network said Monday it will debut “MTV Floribama Shore” later this month, following a cast of eight young adults who spent a summer together in Florida’s Panama City Beach with the expected personal dramas. It’s being made by the same production company as “Jersey Shore,” which aired from 2009 to 2012.

“Jersey Shore” was the network’s highest-rated original series, making

stars of characters like Snooki and The Situation, and spawning worldwide spinoffs like “Warsaw Shore” in Poland.

MTV is becoming the reboot channel, recently reviving “Total Request Live” and “Unplugged.” Its new “Siesta Key” is inspired by “Laguna Beach.”

“Floribama Shore” debuts November 27, the Monday after Thanksgiving.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ takes the god to funny heights THOR RAGNAROK RUNNING TIME: 130 MINS

I

n the stand-alone films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Thor always seemed to get the short end of the stick. The Thor films were never as popular as Iron Man, and didn’t gain steam like Captain America. They were perhaps a little too serious and a little too dull — none of which was the fault of star Chris Hemsworth, whose performances in the role have been so seamless and charming that he almost doesn’t get enough credit.

But “Thor: Ragnarok” has been touted as a different take on the God of Thunder. Marvel Studios and The Walt Disney Co signed up a voice-y director in New Zealand’s Taika Waititi, whose riotous vampire mockumentary “What We Do In The Shadows” displayed a unique comedic sensibility. They took away Thor’s hammer, gave him a haircut, added some Led Zeppelin and told the set designer the more neon rainbows the better.

The results are pretty decent, though perhaps not the total departure that had been hyped.

The bones of the story are preposterous as ever. It turns out Thor has a long lost older sister, Hela (Cate Blanchett), who his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins, who appears to have shot for about two hours) locked away because she was so dangerous.

An event happens that releases Hela to the world. She’s really strong, like stronger than Thor strong, and really

The movie literally splits in two at this point. Poor Blanchett, who has gone full vamp as Hela, is good as always but how lame it must be to be in the “fun” Thor movie and have to play one of the most blandly written villains ever. While she’s off waging her deathly serious takeover, Thor gets to join an irreverent comedy sideshow on the planet Sakaar — a sort of wasteland at the end of the universe run by a Grade-A weirdo who calls himself Grandmaster, played, fittingly, by Jeff Goldblum.

It’s this section that is pretty amusing and where Waititi’s irreverence really gets to shine with pratfalls and witty writing. It’s no surprise that this is right up Goldblum’s alley, but the real delight is Hemsworth who knows just how to subvert the Thor character without turning him into a total mockery. He’s a real comedic talent, which audiences got a taste of in “Ghostbusters.”

And Tessa Thompson is fantastic as Valkyrie, a hard drinkin’ fighter with a secret past she’d rather forget.

I imagine “Thor: Ragnarok” is one that might improve on subsequent viewings, when you have a chance to relax with the jokes divorced from the pressure of juggling the silly/serious plot. But it’s a fairly flawed movie on the whole with egregious tonal shifts. Some of the gags go on too long with the Hulk

One particular army of the dead sequence seemed like it could have been lifted from a “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie — which is not the most flattering comparison.

While Waititi’s energy and wit is

apparent in the film, it still feels as though he had to operate from the same Marvel “base flavor” and was allowed on occasion to sprinkle a few of his own original toppings on.

“Thor: Ragnarok” is the most fun of the Thor movies by a long shot, but it is still very much a Thor movie for better or worse.

Dinner with ‘The Divine One’ Sir Christopher Ondaatje recalls a magical evening in 1956 spent in the presence of sultry jazz icon Sarah Vaughan.

I

suppose I’ve been waiting all my life for someone to ask me, “Have you ever met Sarah Vaughan?” Finally, a couple of weeks ago, someone did ask me exactly that question.

It was in 1956, the year I left England for Canada, that Sarah Vaughan was singing at The Colonial Tavern – that great jazz nightclub on Yonge Street, below Dundas, in Toronto. Alas it is no more. At that time, in the early summer, I knew only two people in Canada: Michael White who had his own Imperial Jazz Band, and Jerry Laughlin, one of four young singers who called themselves The Grads, and who were quite popular in the mid 1950s. They sang the old standards. Well, somehow, their manager had arranged for them to meet the Divine Sarah that Saturday night and managed to get a stage-front table – as long as they had dinner. But they had to get there early because the house was packed. I went along with them, so there were six of us: The Four Grads, Mike White, and me. We were there promptly at 6.30pm as the first set started at 7pm. We ordered

I ordered the special Colonial Hamburger, French fries and coleslaw, and I can’t remember what the others ordered – but we knew we wouldn’t be served our food until the end of the first set – about 8pm. And then we settled down for the evening.

Now this was 1956 and Sarah Vaughan still hadn’t recorded the classic Errol Garner-Johnny Burke “Misty”, which she did two years later in Paris. But she had moved to Mercury

Records in 1954 and had recorded Bob Merrill’s “Make Yourself Comfortable” and the Jimmy Dorsey-Paul Madeira “I’m Glad There is You”. They were my favourites and she sang them both.

It was thrilling to be there and to listen to her incredible contralto reverberating over the clamour of the club, dripping with honey and pouring over the strings.

Sarah was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1924 and came up in the same two big bands, those of pianist Earl

Hines and vocalist Billy Eckstine, that nurtured her contemporaries Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Of course she had conquered jazz long before she came to Mercury Records and she was just hitting her stride. It is the incredible lushness of Sarah Vaughan’s voice that seduces you. She can slur a vowel to match her vibrato, and she can radiate warmth through the most subtle love song basking in the opulence of her incredible vocal gifts. I was spellbound!

Promptly at 8pm the first set ended.

There was great applause but no encores. And after a few words with her band she tripped down the steps to our table and said, “Hi boys and girls; That was fun. It’s nice here.” She then, with her ample rear end, literally bumped me off part of my chair so that she could share it with me and started to eat all of my well-done hamburger and French fries, washing them down with a couple of very large gin-and-tonics.

She was in great form and stayed with us through the intermission chatting freely about all sorts of personal happenings on the road. Just before the 9 o’clock second set she asked The Grads if they wanted to do a number with her.

Of course they did, and they decided on “Little Boy Blue”. “What key do you sing it in?” she asked. “B flat”, they said. “Well give me a B flat.” And Jerry Laughlin sang a note. “That’s not B flat”, she said. “This is B flat.” Then they sang their song.

And so we sat through another magical hour of Sarah Vaughan at The Colonial Tavern listening to her consonants ring with her unique delicate quaver and improvising her way through seemingly impossible phrases.

She was in great form and sang two unforgettable encores including Billy Strayhorns “Lush Life” which she had just recorded in New York. When the second set ended she sat with us for only a little while and then excused herself because she had to fly to Chicago early the next morning as she had to prepare for a concert there.

What an evening!

Have I ever met Sarah Vaughan?

Indeed I have. In fact I’ve had dinner with her.

AP Was There: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy

n November 22, 1963, President John F Kennedy was assassinated while visiting Texas with his wife.

AP photographer James “Ike” Altgens was near the president, and relayed the news to Dallas bureau chief Bob Johnson, who filed the first AP news bulletin on the shooting.

It read: “President Kennedy was shot today just as his motorcade left downtown Dallas. Mrs. Kennedy jumped up and grabbed Mr. Kennedy.

She cried, “Oh, no!” The motorcade sped on.”

The Associated Press is republishing a version of its report from later that day. It is published as it was originally, and contains an error in the first paragraph, which refers to Kennedy as the 36th president, instead of the 35th. ___ DALLAS, TX, NOV 22 (AP) President John F Kennedy, thirty-sixth president of the United States, was shot to death today by a hidden assassin armed with a high-powered rifle.

Kennedy, 46, lived about an hour after a sniper cut him down as his limousine left downtown Dallas.

Automatically, the mantle of the presidency fell to Vice President Lyndon B Johnson, a native Texan who had been riding two cars behind the chief executive.

There was no immediate word on when Johnson would take the oath of office.

Kennedy died at Parkland Hospital, where his bullet-pierced body had been taken in a frantic but futile effort to save his life.

Lying wounded at the same hospital was Governor John Connally of Texas, who was cut down by the same fusillade that ended the life of the youngest man ever elected to the presidency.

Connally and his wife had been riding with the president and Mrs. Kennedy.

The first lady cradled her dying husband’s bloodsmeared head in her arms as the presidential limousine raced to the hospital.

“Oh, no,” she kept crying.

Police ordered an unprecedented dragnet of the city, hunting for the assassin.

They believed the fatal shots were fired by a white man about 30, slender of build, weighing about 165 pounds, and standing 5 feet 10 inches tall.

The murder weapon reportedly was a 30-30 rifle.

Shortly before Kennedy’s death became known, he was administered the last rites of the Roman Catholic Church. He had been the first Roman Catholic president in American history.

Even as two clergymen hovered over the fallen president in the hospital emergency room, doctors and nurses administered blood transfusion.

Kennedy died of a gunshot wound.

ndros, our biggest island, used to be referred to as a ‘sleeping giant’ and the name Fresh Creek, Andros, meant Coakley Town, on the north side of the inlet.

When Dr Axel Wenner-Gren, a Swedish entrepreneur and one of the wealthiest men in the world during the 1930s, built Andros Town and the Lighthouse Club resort on the south side of the inlet, and opened his Andros Town airport on January 30, 1957, Fresh Creek was, suddenly, only 15 minutes away from Nassau.

Before that, Andros was a day’s sail away from Nassau and suited best to the hardy traveller, as Father Field, a visiting Anglican, priest found out: “Last Tuesday, I sailed from Nassau to this beautiful island. Some American friends came to see us off and brought a supply of vegetables and other things, which are not to be found on Andros They laughed at our vessel, which was small and had a broken stern, and a crew of three men, plus several small

boys, and the most patchwork and perforated sails - one of the most unseaworthy-looking craft you ever saw.

As one of them said, ‘You must have faith, to go to sea in such a boat.’

However, we had a splendid voyage, and crossed in a few hours, landing on the coral rock, just outside the three-room rectory, in a beautiful little harbour, shaded with palm trees. There were a great many inhabitants, to welcome us.

The resident priest, Fr M E Webb, lives like an Androsian, eating lots of fish, with rice and peas. There is a great variety of fish – blue fish and grunts, and yellow fish, large crayfish and conchs – and all the islanders bring some of their catch to the rectory, so that he is well supplied.

There is plenty of fruit, - bananas, sapodillas, mammees, oranges, tomatoes, papaws, cocoanuts. The flowers are beautiful - lilies under the palm trees, picturesque sisals and aloes, cactus, avocado pears, numerous creeping plants, and orchids, with their long, graceful stalks waving in the breezes.

There are many different kinds of birds—pelicans and cranes, little tobacco doves, woodpeckers, buzzards, perroquets. Twenty miles up the creek, there are flamingos and many other

birds, but I could not go to visit them, as part of the creek was dry, at this season.

The sea gardens are beautiful, with their variety of graceful sea ferns and richly-coloured weeds, which you look at through a glass-bottom bucket, enabling you to see twenty feet down, to the white coral bed of the sea.

One of the men took me lobster fishing, and we caught, in an hour, about a dozen large crayfish (they call them lobsters), about eighteen inches to two feet long, with long antenna, but no claws. The men strike them as they do other fish, with long, double spears.

These crayfish are very good for food.

Our catch provided supper for two or three families.

Children abound on the island. The mothers are proud of them, and one of them told me, with pride, that she had eleven sons and three daughters.

Two or three of the sons had gone to the war, and she did not seem to know clearly where some of them were.

The world is a very small place to the people of Andros, consisting of Andros and Nassau, and little else.

The older people cannot read, but, at church, they all join in singing the service, which they know by heart, and the younger people sing the hymns,

antiphons, etc. It is all very real and hearty. There were a great many women, wonderfully dressed, and a few men. Most of the men and boys were off on a sponging trip, which lasts several weeks.

They thanked me afterwards for my ‘doctrine’, as they call sermons. All of them look on their priest as their great spiritual and temporal director, and he is magistrate and physician, as well as priest.

I went to Calabash Bay, by boat.

There they have a nice, large church, but without any roof. The people built the walls, but had no money to buy wood for the roof, so it has been waiting, for three years, for someone to give them five hundred dollars.

They make their own lime, by burning conch shells, and they use cut-coral to build up a framework, as one does with concrete, but they must buy wood for boards, as the trees are not large enough. They cover their own houses with thatched palmetto, but do not think that thatch is right for a church.

There are no roads, only coral paths, like very large, rough, honeycomb rocks, very hard on shoes.”

A blessing for all – BHS holds St Francis of Assisi Day service –

T

he Bahamas Humane Society will be holding its annual ‘St Francis of Assisi Day, Blessing of the Animals’ service at St Christopher’s Church in Lyford Cay this Sunday at at 4pm.

As far as I know, St Christopher’s is the only church in the Bahamas to hold this service. Archdeacon Keith Cartwright, an animal lover, is the chaplain at the Bahamas Humane Society and is also the parish priest at St Christopher’s.

Many years ago he had the idea of holding a special service for the animals, and he approached me about it even before I became president of the Humane Society (more than 10 years ago actually). It was a suggestion that I welcomed and I embraced the idea enthusiastically. Since the very first service we have always been so pleased with how many people come with their pets. For those not able to bring their animals to the church, they are able to receive a special visit from the Archdeacon to be blessed at home.

The service is a short and simple one, so that the animals do not get too fidgety or bored. Even though there are dogs and cats all together, everybody is peaceful and nobody fights.

There is always a calm over them as if they know that they are in the presence of God. They sit there with their humans and just a few woofs can be heard, but nothing that distracts from the awesome atmosphere of humans gathering together to love and appreciate the enormous contribution their pets and companion animals make in their day-to-day lives.

I have even taken my big terrapin (fresh water turtle) “Big Momma” to receive her blessing. She sat quietly in her box until it was her turn to be sprinkled with holy water and blessed

I’m fairly mellow for all that I’m friendly, and I get along well with other dogs, children, and probably cats, too. Won’t you please come in and adopt me? The adoption hours are 11am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am to 4pm, Saturday, or you can call 323-5138 for more information. You need to act quickly, though, as this free special is only on for a couple more days. for yet another year on earth in her pond at my home.

I am delighted and so happy that Father Cartwright chooses to hold this service every year. Sadly, we missed last year because of Hurricane Matthew, and this year we had to change the date of our event because so much was going on, and we needed to find a day where animal lovers could all be present.

We have to remind people whenever possible that animals are God’s creatures too, and that He created them for us to care for. We are chosen by the Lord to be the custodians for the helpless animals who look to us for food, shelter, protection and kindness. All too often we forget the silent ones who look to us for comfort and protection. I believe that this service is a wonderful reminder for all who attend what role we play in the lives of all animals.

I keep hoping that some other church in New Providence will hear of our St Francis’ “Blessing of the Animals” service and follow suit, but so far St Christopher’s remains alone in this. We can but hope that in the near future some other church will choose to hold their own services to honour the feast of St Francis of Assisi Day. Archdeacon Keith Cartwright is the Anglican Archdeacon of the Southern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Over the years he has been able to assist and guide us to animals in the south who have needed care and help after the ravages of storm and flood. The BHS sends food and veterinary medical supplies after a storm to assist companion animals and livestock alike. This service is also of great assistance to the humans who depend on those animals.

The service is open to anybody who wishes to attend. We ask that you bring your animal suitably leashed or contained, and that you keep them under control at all times. The seating is spaced out so that any dog that does not wish to be sociable may find a quiet spot on his own with his human.

We encourage you to share this information with your friends and family. It is an enchanting short service that puts a smile on everybody’s face. We do hope you will be able to join us.
