Kids get a delicious scare at Boo at the Zoo

F

amilies had a “spooktacular” time at this year’s Boo at the Zoo, encountering fun and only slightly scary characters who roamed through Ardastra Gardens Zoo and Conservation Centre for a unique Halloween event.

Parents and their kids watched a spellbinding drill performance by the flamingos, and enjoyed the costume parade and Halloween-themed crafts and activities for kids. When it came to decorations, Ardastra went all out, spinning cobwebs – holding giant spiders – across the trees and hanging paper bats from branches.

The money raised from Boo at the Zoo directly supports the zoo and its care for the animals.

for over a decade, She’s been using her jewellery-making skills to help women feel beautiful. But now this former banker tells Cara Hunt she’s ready for the spotlight. She hopes to take her small design empire to the next level by catering to the whole woman with her new clothing creations.

F

or over 10 years, Chevette Williamson has been helping Bahamian women express their glamorous side by providing them with beautiful, original accessories. She has also shared her talents by teaching women her craft in jewellery-making classes.

“In a way I created my own competition,” she told Tribune Weekend, “because several of the women that I taught have gone to create their own businesses.”

Her jewellery is all handmade and unique; no two pieces are alike.

After having made a name for herself, Chevette is now on the verge of rebranding her business, expanding it to not only offer accessories, but to create an entire look for women through her own clothing designs.

Chevette was not always a designer.

For almost three decades she worked in banking, but even then fashion played a huge role in her life.

“I got into banking, really because I just needed a job and in addition to it being a good career path. I always admired how the ladies who worked in banks looked, they always looked so smart.”

Over the next 30 years she raised her family, taking advantage of the financial stability her banking career afforded her, but then realised that she wanted to really explore her creative side.

“I was ready to leave and do my own thing. When I was in banking I used to sell costume jewellery to the ladies I worked with, but I realised that I wanted to be a part of the community of Bahamian-made products,” she said.

Eventually she started making her own creations to sell and also briefly hosted the Beaders in Paradise event.

“When I visited a few local trunk shows I saw that everyone’s products looked the same. I realised that the local artisans needed help. I travelled

every year to Bead & Button (in the US) to learn new jewellery-making techniques. Returning to Nassau I had this great idea to bring instructors to the Bahamas instead of me travelling to them.”

And that is how Beaders in Paradise was born. However, the initial response wasn’t what Chevette had hoped for and the investment in this event soon became an overwhelming burden.

“I wanted too much too fast. I thought I would get tourists who wanted to bead in paradise, so instead of inviting one or two instructors to my event, I had five instructors that offered about four classes each. After three consecutive workshops between 2011 and 2013 with a terrible reception I was in serious trouble.”

Despite this, she was eventually was able to open her own store where she sold her creations, raw materials, and also taught lessons.

“Some women are afraid to step out of their comfort zone of wearing common pieces of jewellery. I combat that fear by encouraging them and pairing them with something that speaks to their personality. I feel happy when I get the loads of compliments while wearing my jewellery. I want other women to feel that as well,” she said.

“The women who wear my jewellery want to stand out by wearing something different from the crowd. They want to feel elegant, classy. This is what I do for the women who come to my store – give them that boost of confidence they’re looking for.”

In the early days of her career, Chevette said one of the challenges she faced was having people actually appreciate the value of her work and agreeing to pay a fair price for it.

“But I do think now people are beginning to see the value of the materials that I use and the time that goes into the process of creating (the pieces). I know my market and my price points and where to take my items to be sold rather than selling yourself short by selling something undervalue,” she said.

She said the turning point in her career came when a woman by the name of Camilita from London visited her store.

“I started telling her a little about my struggles. Then she said to me, ‘The reason why you are broke is because the world does not know about you’.”

Chevette decided to take that comment to heart and therefore now looking forward to rebranding. She hopes to do this with a new show to be held this Sunday called “Eternal Trends – A Fashion Showcase” featuring CW Accessories and Clothing Line.

“I am very tall and so I always used to make my own clothes and then I had a seamstress and people would ask me who made my clothes and my seamstress told me over the years, ‘You have referred so many people to me that you should start a clothing line’. Also, when persons come into the store they would ask, ‘What can I wear a particular necklace with?’ and so I thought that this show is a great way to show a complete look. It is called Eternal Trends because the clothing is simple and classic; it’s looks that will never go out of style. I am only using a colour palette of denim, white and black,” she said.

“Eventually, I will either sell the fabric so that they can have their own seamstress make something and I hope to stock some of the more popular items in the store.”

“Eternal Trends” takes place on Sunday at 5pm at Seven@The Pointe. Tickets are $25.

The spicy flavours of Guyana

he Bahamas, though small, has a very colourful and varied food scene.

And nowhere is this more evident than at the annual International Cultural, Wine and Food Festival, which was held two weeks ago at the Botanical Gardens.

Visitors were able to enjoy everything from Indian samosas to Filipino chicken adobo.

But what about after the festival; how can you find that tasty dish you so enjoyed?

Let’s take for instance the deliciously spicy Guyanese dishes that were on sale.

Tribune Weekend spoke with Cherrilene Baxter-Dennis, a member of Nassau’s Guyanese community who shared with us some of her country’s classics.

“We were so happy to take part in the International Cultural, Wine and Food Festival because we want to showcase our culture in this way. We selected to showcase the roti and the curry because we have special ingredients that go into their preparation. We have a special way in marinating our curry before it is prepared so it gives off that tasty and spicy aroma,” said Cherrilene.

She said versions of roti and curry can also be found in Trinidad and Tobago, as the island country is a close neighbour of Guyana’s and they share similar cultures.

“They have a mixed nation just as we do. The thing is, (people) want our roti and

curry because of the way it is made. Others make it, but their ingredients are different, so the taste is going to be different,” she said.

Cherrilene said Bahamians also have their own versions of curry dishes, sometimes including conch, and Jamaicans may change up the ingredients and add carrots, but the Guyanese way is unique.

Giving some examples of beloved dishes from the South American country, she named mutton or chicken curry which is often placed on flattened dough or eaten as a wrap.

“We also have the Guyanese pepperpot (a stewed meat dish, strongly flavoured with cinnamon, cassareep), which is mainly from the Amerindians.

We have the dhal puri which is

a flat dough like the roti, but it has peas in it. Then we have what is called the cook-up rice where we mix different meats and we prepare a stew that is cooked in the rice.

“We have what we call the metemgee – and in some islands we call it boil-down,” she said. The metemgee is a one-pot dish with plantains, cassava, and other root vegetables, all cooked down with meat or fish.

How can locals find these dishes going forward? Cherrilene said while there isn’t any restaurant in the Bahamas which specifically offers Guyanese cuisine, there are members of the Guyanese community residing in the country who offer home-based food services.

Cherrilene said Bahamians can make contact with some of these people through the Guyana-Bahamas Association, a non-profit organisation which looks after the interests of the Guyanese who are work and live here.

She believes showing appreciation for one another’s culture and cuisine helps strengthen the bonds between countries.

“Just how we appreciate the conch salad and the conch fritters, (Bahamians) appreciate our roti and curry. Over the years we have learned to understand the Bahamian community, and they have also understood our subculture, thus the support that we get here (at the festival) year after year,” said Cherrilene.

Nassau's new R&B artist has L.A. dreams

ith a background in poetry and the performing arts, it was a smooth transition for Fredia Major into a career in music. And she is determined to be compete with the best.

Fredia is the new R&B/hip hop artist on the scene and recently released her debut single under her artist name, ‘It’s Dia!’.

The track, “Ego”, is inspired by her experiences in relationships. This song is about confidence, “bossiness,” not settling, moving on your own terms, and compromising for no one or nothing, she told Tribune Weekend.

“I’m a feminist at heart and I’m usually the person that speaks my mind. This track was an honest anthem for women that men can respect and sing along to as well.

With this at least I can shine a light for others to be inspired and encouraged. So when they’ve had that bad day or dealt with that bad relationship, friendship or co-worker... they can come home and sing my song... and (reawaken) in themselves the confidence that exists only in them and only through them,” she said.

Fredia spared no effort in making a video for the song, travelling to Los Angeles to shoot it. The singer said she included some sexy scenes to show off the beauty of the body of a real woman. But she also used scenes that show the genuine pain that drives women to make drastic decisions. “(The video) has three scenes. The final scene with the police car was a must for me. It was inspired by a scene from Beyonce’s video ‘Formation’. I chose Beyonce because

I naturally was inspired and love the way she incorporates dark imagery to represent strength in her videos. She is a poetic legend and I want to be a legend too,” she said.

The song was released last week and Fredia said she is loving the feedback from Bahamians and supporters of her music.

“I honestly haven’t seen not one negative comment, and I’m enjoying the fact the people love the message. I’ve got followers from all over the States now which makes me happy because my audience is broadening. I’ve made friends in LA that honesty believe in my music and have been helping me push it. I’m excited to see how the feedback will increase in the near future, especially with my first project coming out,” she said.

Before she released her own song, Fredia released two

music videos for her remixes of Nicki Minaj’s “Megatron” and Cardi B’s “Pressed.”

“I did this because coming into the game of music I want to be the best, not only in my country, but I want to be one of the best among the best in the world. So I came out the gate attacking two very well put together songs and the remixes got amazing feedback,” she said.

Fredia is a self-taught artist who is not afraid to work hard to make her dreams a reality.

“Every night since the first night I picked up a pen I have worked about six to eight hours every night, sometimes 12 to 14 hours on music. I basically immersed myself into the culture and to this day I have evolved into more than even I expected. Each day I got better and better and kept building. So my history lies not within the years I have been

in the business, but within the large amount of time sacrificed away from family and friends, tireless efforts and in deep isolation. I was hungry for this and still am, so I reached out and got everything I prayed for,” she said.

Fredia’s debut EP, “MatilDia” – a play on her stage name and the Roald Dahl story “Matilda” – is scheduled to be released on Thursday, November 7.

“I honestly could not have done any of this without God and I am so grateful that He has given me a way of spreading my message. I just want my music to be great. I want it to be great for me, for my family and for my country,” said Fredia.

A showcase fit for African kings and queens

TRENGTH, confidence and black empowerment is what designers Cardell McClam and Christopher John hope to embody with their latest fashion collection and showcase.

The creators of Cardellious – the Bahamas’ first fullfigured fashion label – and the Cardell McClam brands are closing out the year with what they describe as one of their strongest collections to date: “Afri’KING”.

The fashion show will be held on November 24 at the Courtyard Marriott and will draw inspiration from the African identity and black excellence. The setting is an African palace.

“Black people in the diaspora can do a better job at celebrating life and celebrating each other. I think we are thriving, pushing, and moving and where we are at now we can celebrate,” said Cardell.

“We are not necessarily celebrating what you have acquired over time. We want to celebrate how you see yourself, the standards that

you have for yourself and for others.”

Celebrating black excellence through with his designs comes at an ideal time, said Cardell, as people of African descent are making huge strides in their respective positions and fields.

Cardell pointed to the accomplishments of AfricanAmerican filmmaker Tyler Perry who recently broke barriers and celebrated the opening of the first ever black owned studio in Atlanta which is bigger than Warner Brothers, Walt Disney and Paramount put together.

“It is still a major goal for someone to be a millionaire or billionaire as a black person.

You look at Tyler Perry and what he has done is a major thing,” said the designer. “We still have much more to do and much more to accomplish.

We are underachieving and need to see ourselves as doing more.”

For that reason, he said, “Afri’KING” is much more than a fashion show.

“It’s all encompassing. It is a vibe of ownership, power,

self-discipline and power over yourself. It’s an inner confidence in who you are,” he said Needless to say, Cardell added, this will translate into the designs that will be on display during the show.

“The styling will translate to that natural confident, easy vibe. The voiceover from the time you enter and the music and the cinema, you will feel this empowering vibe,” he told Tribune Weekend.

This event has been a long time coming for Cardell, who said he has always wanted create a show that focuses on the theme of empowerment and black excellence.

There will also be a short film shown during “Afri’KING to emphasise this message.

“The content is very provocative. There will be a documentary called ‘White Privilege’ shown. I want people to leave a little bit upset and bothered. But of

course we are going to have wonderful time. I hope people stay for afro dancing,” said Cardell.

The event also aims to bring awareness to men’s health issues. A local doctor will speak briefly about important facts men need to know about their health.

Tickets for the showcase are $45 and can be purchased at Designer Sunglasses at the Mall at Marathon.

November heralds the start of the cool and dry season that will extend more or less into April or May, says Jack Hardy

W

e gardeners will have to be watering a little more often, but the consolation is that we can now grow virtually any vegetables we wish. With handy lettuce and nutritious greens we may also be entering our healthiest eating time of the year.

Tribune readers who are not regular gardeners can get hold of a plastic container roughly two feet by three feet and about eight inches deep, drill drainage holes in the bottom, fill it with garden or potting soil, plant lettuces such as Simpson Black-Seeded, nourish and water, and have handfuls of salad makings for the foreseeable future. Lettuce seeds germinate quickly and the seedlings seem to leap out of the ground. We will be dealing with the full range of salad candidates next week.

The cool season also allows us to grow healthy greens such as chard, beets, Japanese varieties, kale and spinach. We Bahamians tend to avoid greens and this is a shame. Some proponents of healthy eating encourage us to look at the colour of our

food. The more red (beets), yellow (squash, chard), green (spinach, lettuce) and blue (blueberries, Gorgonzola) we eat the better our diet. Think colour next time you put a dish together.

In addition to starting cool weather plants we need to keep an eye on the vegetables that are already under way. If all goes well we will be eating our first tomatoes before Christmas but the tomatoes that will feed us in February and March should be in the soil very soon.

Successive sowing of crops is extremely important. We can get a minimum of three crops of tomatoes, though more is better. There is no such thing as too many tomatoes if you are capable of making a decent sauce to freeze. Sweet peppers are productive over a long season

and should need only one extra crop.

If you grew bush snap beans for your initial crop you may wish to use tall vinous varieties for the second go round.

Pole beans must be supported but that is easily done with three or four 10-foot poles arranged in a tepee form and tied near the top with duct tape. Pole beans take a little longer to produce but in turn produce heavier crops.

Beets need re-sowing on a monthly basis. Chard grows back after cutting but you may still need a second crop soon. If you grew green chard to begin with you may select coloured chard for your second crop. The leaves are always green but the stalks can be yellow, white, red or pink. Chard is a tremendously underrated crop in The Bahamas and far more use should

be made of both its healthy beet-related greens and the crispy stalks.

Most herbs are annuals and once in place will produce up until – and sometimes beyond – summer. The notable exception is cilantro/coriander which tend to bolt to the seed stage after about a month of prime leaf production. As I mentioned last week, the obvious strategy here is to plant seeds every two weeks. New leaves will be usable by the time the previous crop sets up thick stems and the flavour of the old leaves declines towards bitterness. Allow the seeds to develop and once they start to dry you can half-snap the stalks and cover the seedbearing limbs with brown paper bags. Once the coriander seeds are dry they can be rubbed within the bags and give a good basis for a homemade curry powder. Taste the seeds while they are fresh and juicy. They have a pungent flavour that marries well with salmon and can substitute for pickled capers.

Another herb that may run to seed too early for you is dill.

If you prize the narrow leaves – dill weed – then the appearance of seed stalks will be a disappointment. Try sowing a second crop of dill about two months after the first. Once

the dill seeds have dried they can be contained by a large brown paper bag just like coriander. The seeds have much more flavour than the leaves and are tastiest when just dry. Try dill seed tea as a very effective anti-gas solution.

There is more to the garden than herbs and vegetables.

The annonas will come to the end of their fruit bearing season now it is cool. As early as possible all the branches should be trimmed by two or three feet, the cut being made just above a growth node.

Annonas bear fruit on new growth and a wholesale pruning exercise will dramatically improve the volume of next year’s crop. I gave this advice last year to a lady in Abaco who complained that her large soursop tree only produced about three or four fruits during the year. A month or two before Dorian she let me know she was bringing some giant soursops by because she had over 40 hanging in the tree. They made lovely ice cream.

My wife returned to Abaco for a funeral in October.

Though out garden was devastated, a few trees and shrubs survived. The noisette roses on the north side of the house were in greater bloom than they had ever been.

Strangely enough, the black mulberry tree was producing a mass of flowers and fruits – in October! Plants that survive a harrowing experience such as a hurricane are often reminded that their purpose in life is to produce fruit and seeds in order to keep the species alive and well.

Meanwhile, my mulberry wine (vintage 2019) is aging undisturbed in a dark cupboard. When I finally return to Abaco and my house is fixed, I intend to shave off my hurricane beard and enjoy a glass (or two) of mulberry wine.

WRITER COLLECTS PLAYS SUITABLE FOR CHURCHES IN ONE BOOK

ooking around her, storyteller Inderia Reeba Green realised there was a deficit in plays that could be put on for church productions and special services. So she decided to put together “For Play Church” – a book of entertaining and humorous stage shows that can easily be reproduced.

It is one of two books by the author, who is also celebrating the release of “The Adventure of Ezee and Breezy”.

“It can be challenging to create a story for a church event where you want to bring a fresh idea to the audience while remembering that the church aims to lead people to Christ. So that balance must always be kept in mind. I didn’t specifically set out to publish the plays. I had written plays for churches that I attended and I didn’t want them to be forgotten or to go to waste and I found that when they are put into a book, others can utilise them in their own churches. Of course, it also makes for great general reading,” she told Tribune Weekend.

Ms Green will be holding a signing for the book during ‘The Creative’ seminar being held tomorrow at the British Colonial Hilton.

The Creative is a workshop for writers, directors, actors, cinematographers, marketers and bloggers. It is aimed at awakening the storyteller within, learning more about the craft, and sharing lessons and journeys from others in the industry.

“Anyone who wishes to have practical steps on taking your idea and making it into something tangible should attend. I think there are so many persons who may have ideas for a story, for a play or a film or a speech, but they do not know how to step-by-step bring it to life. This event will allow them to learn what it takes to do that, get inspiration and a roadmap, and also participate in creating their own story,” said Ms Green.

As for her personally, she finds inspiration all around around her, “from an exchange on an elevator to watching children cross the street, to listening to conversations in the beauty salon or on the radio.”

“Sometimes, they take shape through my daydreaming or I read a phrase in a book and an idea for a story comes to me,” she said.

For “The Adventures of Ezee and Breezy”, for example, she said she was mostly inspired by stories she heard during her childhood from parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and all the elders described events in their lives.

Meanwhile, when it comes to “For Play Church”, she said: “I wanted to make realistic stories in a generalised way, because everyone has some version of a trial or challenge in their life.”

One of the most intriguing stories from “For Play Church” is called “The Truth, Part One,” which she said was well received when it was staged this Easter.

“It is a very unique look at what happened in the spiritual realm during the time of the crucifixion and the resurrection, and when writing it, I was challenged on so many levels. I don’t think that was by chance either,” she said.

“For ‘The Adventures of Ezee and Breezy’, I love ‘Finder’s Keepers’ and ‘Year in, Year Out’. The couple of Ezra and Brezetta are so comical to me so it’s difficult to pick just one. Of course, ‘Murphy’s Storm’, which was their debut, will always be a favourite of mine.”

Ms Green has been involved in the creative arts for over 20 years. She started out in high school, participating in speech competitions which then led her to taking part in the National Arts Festival.

“I have been writing stories since I was a child but didn’t take it seriously until 2010, when I began to write with purpose and focus. It was then that I started Greenacre Studios, a company that produces content for stage and screen. I recall writing little fun stories that made fun of the soap operas that aired on ZNS at the time and my parents thought it was so cute and creative and showed it off to all their friends, but of course, I didn’t think anything of it,” she said.

But here she is, all these years later, and writing plays a more integral part in her life than ever.

Reacher has to stay one step ahead of the loan sharks, the thugs, and the assassins. He teams up with a fed-up waitress who knows a little more than she’s letting on, and sets out to take down the powerful and make the greedy pay. It’s a long shot.

The odds are against him. But Reacher believes in a certain kind of justice . . . the kind that comes along once in a blue moon.

A wife, a mother and a candlestick maker

or wife and motherof-three Jeunesse Bullard there is nothing better than taking a moment to stop, regroup, and refocus.

And she does this by burning scented candles.

“There is no feeling like arriving home and having a glass of your favourite beverage and lighting a candle,” she said.

Jeunesse loves candles so much she decided to start her own company focused on sharing that relaxing and reinvigorating experience with others.

Being a chandler, she said, allows her a therapeutic access to a creative outlet. A businesswoman and banker by profession, Jeunesse said candle-making gives her a brief escape from her day-today work in financial services. “ I love candles...Everywhere I went I found myself in candle aisles, buying candles in all shapes, sizes and vessels, especially scented candles, as they tend to immediately elevate the ambiance in any room,” she said.

She tossed the idea around for a while of opening a homebased candle business. She began her research and spent many nights reading, testing, blending, and many times failing.

“The Virgo in me kept pushing and trying, and once I was comfortable with the product and felt it was right, I began to give them to family as gifts and friends. I would ask them to be my testers.

From there it took off, and as we say, the rest is history,” she said.

The Sixth Scent Candle Company was born and today specialises in candles, diffusers, room sprays, wax melts and more. Also available are a small selection of body scrubs.

“We are dedicated to creating lasting memories through fragrance,” Jeunesse said of her company’s mission. “Many times a fragrance can remind us of a loved one or takes us back to a special moment and memory. It is apparent that

the sense of smell is one of the most powerful senses to have and the trigger that it has on memory is absolutely astounding and intriguing.”

She believes candles always make for the perfect gift for special occasions.

To help her better fulfil her customers’ needs, Jeunesse likes to ask them about their favourite fragrances.

“It gets one thinking about what they like, or what the individual they are purchasing for likes. From here it then becomes personal because there was thought put into it.

We can personalise candles in different ways and that makes it extra special. The response is so far positive. I wouldn’t make or sell something to someone I wouldn’t use myself, but we are still learning and growing to ensure that we bring our clients only the best products,” she said.

She has also decided to give her candles catchy names that encourage a positive mindset, promote self-love, spark laughter and offer an on-trend approach to the business.

“Many times we find clients drawn to certain candles just because of the name, for example, our candles called ‘You Had Me At Hello’, ‘Kamalame State of Mind’, ‘About Last Night’, or from the men’s line, ‘Wreckless’,” she said.

Jeunesse said her goal is to one day take her brand to an international level.

“In addition to our local client base, we have many international clients that support us. We would love to travel and see our products made in the Bahamas retailed abroad; that would make us very proud,” she said.

Cara says: “I would like this a lot more if it wasn’t so shortwaisted. I’m fine with the skirt – it’s playful, a lot of fun. My problem is that the top is just weird. I don’t think it matches the skirt and I just think it just makes the whole outfit look a bit jammed up.

Karin says: “This is so simple and could have ended up looking tacky, but Laura makes it look like the high fashion that it is. It’s not quite a bandeau top as it connects with the skirt in the back.

Even the high slit works and still looks elegant. And of course the the Emerald City green is gorgeous on her.”

Cara says: ““These crop top looks can be iffy, but this one works for me. At least she has the youth and the figure to pull it off. And yes, this is a beautiful shade of green. It’s overall a very unadorned, chic look and I like it.”

The fate of the new

'Terminator'

W

ho will save the “Terminator” franchise from itself? Not “Deadpool” director Tim Miller, producer James Cameron or even Linda Hamilton, it turns out.

Yes, despite an A-list roster of talent, including people behind the scenes who theoretically should know how to resurrect this brand and move it forward, “Terminator: Dark Fate “ is just another bad “Terminator” movie in a string of bad “Terminator” movies (although better than “Genisys”). And yet like the cyborg invention behind all of this, they keep coming and are really hard to kill.

This time it really seemed promising with Cameron back on board for the first time in almost 30 years. This film was going to erase all the confusing timelines set by all the sequels that followed and just pick up where “T2” left off.

It was also to be centered on a group of women, including Hamilton, Mackenzie Davis as an augmented soldier named Grace and Natalia

Simple, right? Not when there are three screenwriters and five people with “story by” credits involved.

Like many of the semisequel, semi-reboot films populating the multiplexes, “Terminator: Dark Fate” is at least partially a rehash of the original, with a Terminator (Gabriel Luna) emerging naked from thin air (and the future of course) to kill an unsuspecting young woman. This time said young woman is Dani Ramos, a nice-seeming but dreadfully underwritten auto factory worker who lives in Mexico

with her dad and brother and takes quite some time to grasp the life-and-death situation she’s in.

Thankfully she’s got a protector in Grace, an augmented super soldier, also from the future, who is part human, part Terminator and has been sent to make sure Dani stays alive for reasons we won’t learn until much later.

“The Terminator’s” original damsel-turned-warrior Sarah Connor joins their ranks too and it gives me no pleasure to report that it’s not an enjoyable comeback. Poor Hamilton — who looks as fierce as ever and was rightfully excited to get a chance to

bring Sarah Connor back not as an ingenue but a woman in her 60s who has lived a life — has been reduced to a lousy one-note caricature imagined by a group of men. She simply growls her awful one-liners like “I hunt Terminators and I drink till I black out. Enough of a resume for you?”

Is this team of all-male screenwriters to blame?

Perhaps. This film is a perfect representation of something that thinks it is being feminist simply because the camera is pointed at three women most of the time. But really, Dani is not much more than a plot device and Sarah is a reductive stereotype

of an embittered woman.

Even Grace, who thanks to Davis rises above the rotten script unscathed, has coded “female” limitations — she’s powerful, sure, but she has emotional and physical weaknesses too.

Arnold Schwarzenegger adds a dash of life and much-needed comedy when he makes his late-movie entrance. Without giving too much away, the original Terminator has been leading a surprisingly normal life for the past few decades and it’s a rare delight in “Dark Fate.”

I wish I could say the action made up for the story deficiencies, but a lot of it is so jumpy and confusing that it’s hard to even track on what is happening. There are some inspired moments, like an extended sequence at the Hoover Dam and the high-octane freeway chase that essentially opens the film.

Still, the money and talent involved should have produced something significantly better. And of course the end sets us up for more potential “Terminator” films.

After “Dark Fate” the question is no longer who can save “Terminator,” but who will be bold enough to just let it die?

Star quality and diversity at BIFF '19

T

wo powerhouse studio films will bookend this year’s Bahamas International Film Festival. Opening the 16th annual festival on December 9 will be “Just Mercy’ starring Black Panther’s Michael B Jordan, and Oscar winners Brie Larson and Jamie Foxx.

The film is based on a powerful and thought-provoking true story. It follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson and his history-making battle for justice and fight against the death penalty.

Meanwhile, “Pain & Glory”, starring Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, will shine at BIFF’s closing gala on December 15 at Baha Mar. In the film, Antonio Banderas – in a critically acclaimed performance – plays a film director who reflects on the choices he’s made in life as past and present come crashing down around him.

BIFF founder and executive director Leslie Vanderpool said she feels this year’s festival will have the most diverse line-up of films yet.

“As the Bahamas faces a collective resolve to support two economic tourist meccas – Abaco and Grand Bahama – BIFF will assist by donating ticket sales to support students from those islands that were impacted by Hurricane Dorian,” she said.

For the first time in many years, BIFF will take place

entirely in Nassau, with the Writers Residency Programme and the main event once again celebrating “Cinema In Paradise”.

This year, the festival will showcase 53 films from 22 countries including: eight world premieres, 43 Caribbean premieres, and all Bahamian premieres. The four categories in competition at BIFF are: Spirit of Freedom: Narrative, Spirit of Freedom: Documentary, New Visions, and Short Film.

The 1989 classic tells the story of Salvatore “Sal” Fragione (Danny Aiello), the Italian owner of a pizzeria in Brooklyn. A neighbourhood local, Buggin’ Out (Giancarlo Esposito), becomes upset when he sees that the pizzeria’s Wall of Fame exhibits only Italian actors. Buggin’ Out believes a pizzeria in a black neighbourhood should showcase black actors, but Sal disagrees. The wall becomes a symbol of racism and hate to Buggin’ Out and to other people in the community, and tensions rise.

Being screened out of competition are several Bahamian films, including “Ad Meliora”, an experimental short film about the struggles girls go through growing up in a male dominated society;

“Licence 2 Create”, which follows Anastarcia Palacious, Wendi, Nathan J Burrows, TAP, David Rolle, Sawyerboy, Sarsha Taylor, Kishan Munroe, and “Freedom to Paradise”, a film which follows the three equally important steps of death: transporting the dead, preparing the body, and the funeral – all done by the first funeral home to open on Eleuthera.

Marion B Carstairs – “The Fastest Woman on Water”

abez Abel Bostwick and his wife Helen (née Ford) were the parents of three children – Nellie Ford Bostwick, Frances Evelyn Bostwick and Albert Carleton Bostwick. Fannie was 20 years old when her father died, so she was raised by her mother in the family homes at 800 Park Avenue, New York City and at Friedheim, on Chicken Valley Road, Mamaroneck, New York.

Like so many other rich Americans, Fanny descended upon Europe where she met Albert James Henry Carstairs, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Irish Rifles. They were married in 1892 in Mamaroneck. Their only child, Marion Barbara Carstairs, was born in London in 1900.

In 1903, Fanny married again. Her second husband had the unusual name of Francis Francis (1853-1928), with whom she had two children, Evelyn and Francis (1906-1982). Fanny’s three children were raised in their mother’s home in England, but spent long periods with their grandmother at the Bostwick mansion, described as “in the area where the Standard Oil magnates all reside”.

Being a Standard Oil heiress allowed Marion to live a life of luxury, extravagance, which gave birth to the legends, but also of philanthropy, to the benefit of hundreds of Bahamians.

A news item of April 21, 1942 supports this. It read: “New School Building For Roman Catholic Mission Formally Opened” – The formal opening of the new kindergarten school building, which has been given to the Roman Catholic Mission by Miss Marion B Carstairs, took place this morning in the grounds of St Joseph’s Church, on the corner of Nassau and Meadow Streets. The building is that which was used for the Whale Cay exhibits at the Bahamas Fair last year and is ideal for the new purpose, to which it is being put.”

While writing Marion’s obituary for London’s Daily Telegraph, Kate Summerscale realised that she had happened upon a story worth telling. Kate phoned Marion’s niece (my wife) to get better details of the family history.

The result was Summerscale’s popular 1997 book, “The Queen of Whale Cay”, the biography of Marion Barbara Carstairs.

But Summerscale could not tell the whole story, possibly because nobody, including Marion’s relatives, seems to know the whole story.

Whatever the case, it’s no wonder that outsiders don’t know it and are, noticeably, more interested in the ever growing legend.

But here, we look at the very real Marion Carstairs, not at a spoiled rich girl who never got her hands dirty.

During World War I she served as an ambulance driver and by the 1920s her love of speed led her to the expensive sport of boat racing, where she competed with the best names in the sport and made a name for herself. The first time she won a race was against Gar Wood, the best of the best. At the Classic Boat Centre at Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, an entire section of the museum is devoted to “The Fastest Woman on Water”. There, one can see dozens of the trophies that Marion Carstairs won.

Sir Malcolm Campbell, whose Bluebird cars and boats set world speed records on land and sea during the 1920s and 1930s, knew that his motors depended on proper lubrication and ran best on oil money.

Miss Carstairs came to the Bahamas in the early 1930s and bought Whale Cay. Over the years she bought and sold many of the cays in the Berry Islands and, up to the time of her death, everyone in the districts of North Andros and the Berry Islands knew Whale Cay and remembered Miss Carstairs.

Hundreds of them had worked for her.

Marion turned Whale Cay into a prosperous settlement and provided paid employment and housing for hundreds of Bahamians.

She built a mansion for herself and called it the Great House. Not as grand as 800 Park Avenue, it was nevertheless a spacious thing of beauty, well-furnished and functioning like a sub-tropical version of “Downton Abbey”, with all the modern conveniences of the era.

She cared not only for the bodies of her people, but also for their souls, and so built St Catherine’s Anglican Church on Whale Cay. The church was consecrated by the Bishop of Nassau and the Rev Julian Henshaw was its rector. Henshaw is buried outside the west door of St Anne’s in Fox Hill.

Thanks to the dedication of hundreds of Bahamians, Whale Cay had been turned into a large and productive agricultural development, with regular exhibits at each year’s Bahamas Fair and at international fairs in England.

Miss Carstairs was a serious businesswoman and, to serve the needs of the island and its people, she owned

and operated freight boats that plied between Whale Cay, Nassau and Miami. She invited Prince Hepburn (a local evangelist) to run an annual summer camp on Whale Cay for hundreds of low-income Bahamian children, all at her own expense.

After World War II, her half-brother, Francis Francis (1906-1982), bought Bird Cay from his half-sister and developed Bird Cay, in much the same way as Marion had developed Whale Cay. While his house was being built, he and his wife lived at Whale Cay with Marion and commuted to Bird Cay each day.

It’s just a distance of a few hundred yards over a narrow creek.

My wife Kim and her brother Craig, grew up on Bird Cay and saw their aunt very regularly. The Francis family spent many an evening on Whale Cay, and Marion Carstairs came to visit her brother just as frequently. Children don’t meet their aunts and Kim and Craig never “met” Marion Carstairs. She was just “there” and they grew up around her and they knew her well. From the moment of their births, she was the aunt who lived “next door”.

Zombie flu: How the 1919 influenza pandemic fuelled the rise of the living dead (THE CONVERSATION) – Zombies have lurched to the centre of Halloween culture, with costumes proliferating as fast as the monsters themselves.

This year, you can dress as a zombie prom queen, a zombie doctor – even a zombie rabbit or banana. The rise of the living dead, though, has a surprising link to another recurring October visitor: the influenza virus.

One hundred years ago, 1919 saw the end of one of the worst plagues in human history: the deadly 1918-1919 influenza pandemic. The pandemic was a true horror show, with 50-100 million people dying and millions more infected. The United States alone lost more people in the pandemic than it lost in all the 20th- and 21st-century wars, combined.

This was no ordinary flu virus: It killed young adults in high numbers, and it came with grisly side effects, like massive bleeding from the nose, mouth and ears. It could damage the nervous and respiratory systems and could cause violent derangement, delirium and – in its aftermath – profound lethargy and suicidal depression.

The pandemic turned communities into haunted landscapes. Coffins ran out as bodies piled up everywhere.

Stores, theatres and schools were closed, and wagons were pulled through the streets to collect corpses. Funerals were often impossible to organise, and across the country, mass graves were dug to accommodate the many dead.

A literature professor, I have written about the flu’s surprising connection to zombies, spiritualism and poems like T S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land” in my new book, “Viral Modernism: The Influenza Pandemic and Interwar Literature.”

The zombie connection

How did the influenza pandemic link to the appearance of zombies? After all, the term “zombie” arrived in the United States largely through William Seabrook’s 1929 book “The Magic Island.” Seabrook wrote, often in starkly racist terms, of various ceremonies, traditions and stories he had gathered in Haiti. He included an account of the zombie figure, which he described as a resurrected

Depictions of such zombies soon found their way into popular movies like “White Zombie” (1932) or “Ouanga” (1936).

A different strain of zombielike creatures, however, had emerged earlier in the work of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft.

These zombies anticipate the ones George Romero would later depict in films like “Night of the Living Dead”: bloody, lurching, disheveled corpses intent on infecting the living and hungry for human flesh.

A perfect incubator for these “viral zombies” were the grisly experiences the influenza pandemic brought to every community.

Lovecraft’s world of corpses

In his hometown of Providence, Rhode Island, Lovecraft was surrounded by the pandemic’s ghastly atmosphere. As one local witness remembered, “all around me people were dying… . (and) funeral directors worked with fear…. Many graves were fashioned by long trenches, bodies were placed side by side”; the pandemic, the

witness laments, was “leaving in its wake countless dead, and the living stunned at their loss” (letter by Russell Booth; Collier Archives, Imperial War Museum, London).

Lovecraft channelled this climate into his stories of the period – producing corpsefilled tales with infectious atmospheres from which sprang lurching, flesh-eating invaders who left bloody corpses in their wake.

In his story “Herbert West: Reanimator,” for example, Lovecraft creates a ghoulish doctor intent on reanimating newly dead corpses. A pandemic arrives that offers him fresh specimens – and that echoes the flu scenes of mass graves, overworked doctors and piles of bodies. When the head doctor of the hospital dies in the outbreak, Dr West reanimates him, producing a proto-zombie figure that escapes to wreak havoc on the town. The living dead doctor lurches from house to house, ravaging bodies and spreading destruction, a monstrous, visible version of what the flu virus had done worldwide.

In other episodes and stories, Lovecraft’s proto-zombies suggest an additional thread of prejudice that runs through the zombie tradition, one fuelled by widespread fears of contagion during the pandemic.

Even before the outbreak, Lovecraft believed that foreign hordes were infecting the Aryan race generally, weakening the bloodlines. These xenophobic anxieties weave their way into his stories, as contagion and pandemicsoaked atmospheres blend into racist fears of immigrants and nonwhite invaders.

Indeed, many of his stories are unwitting templates for how prejudicial fears may be problematically amplified at moments of crisis. Such fears are evoked and often critiqued in later depictions of viral zombie hordes, such as the infectious monsters of Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” and the film’s subtle commentary on race, when the white police force mistakes the main African American character for a viral zombie.

Our fears as monsters

Lovecraft’s proto-zombies also provided a strange compensation for some of the pandemic’s worst memories. Like the flu virus, these monsters consumed the flesh of the living, spread blood and violence, and acted without cause or explanation. Lovecraft assures his readers that these monsters are far worse than anything they saw in World War I or in the pandemic – the defining tragedies of the era. Unlike the virus, though, these monsters could be seen, stopped, killed – and reburied.

Every decade seems to need its own zombie, and Lovecraft offered his readers a version that spoke deeply to the anxieties of his moment.

eSports blows up in the Bahamas

IDEO gamers who want to put their skills to the test in a friendly combat will have the opportunity to do so when the next eSports Tournament kicks off in a few weeks.

Gamers are welcome to participate in the “Call of Duty – Modern Warfare” tournament, to be held on November 16 at Pompey Square from 7.30pm.

Those who competed in the first tournament, “Street Smash”, have also been invited back for the next event. eSports is a form of competition using video games. eSports often takes the form of organised, multiplayer video game competitions, particularly between professional players, individually or as teams. The popularity of eSports has grown rapidly over the past three years, making it a billion-dollar industry, with competitors earning millions of dollars in competition.

The latest tournament to be held in the Bahamas marked the launch of the first eSports event hosted by GameHeads, a Bahamian eSports organisation.

The recent event featured a team competition in “Street Fighter” and “Super Smash Bros”. “Street Fighter” engaged teams of three and “Super Smash Bros” consisted of teams of two. Teams had to square off against each other in order to claim the GameHeads championship belt.

Players Shad, Shaq and Vice of Team Brawler proved victorious and are the current reigning “Street Fighter” champions. Meanwhile,

Deangelo Rolle and Dario Rolle, are the literal “Smash Brothers”, defeating all the other teams.

The eSports gaming boxes for the tournament were designed and manufactured locally.

“This was the most supported eSports tournament ever held in the Bahamas.

This was the first event held by GameHeads, a collaboration of the four leading eSports organisations in the Bahamas: Game Day Entertainment, CULT, BNEL and eSports Bahamas. This event was innovative, being the first outdoors tournament,” said Yvette Johnson of Game Day Entertainment.

Ms Johnson said the aim is to bring consistent and exciting eSports competitions to the Bahamas and “grow this lucrative industry”.

“Look out for monthly tournaments aimed at determining who will be the greatest gamers in the Bahamas and who will represent the country in international tournaments,” she said.

A life of bold pursuits and grand accomplishments

Sir Christopher Ondaatje recalls the spectacular achievements of John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir, the Scottish novelist, historian, and Unionist politician.

I

n 1935, King George V, on the advice of Prime Minister R B Bennett, appointed John Buchan to replace the Earl of Bessborough as the 15th Governor General of Canada.

He occupied the post until his death in 1940. After a brief legal career, Buchan simultaneously began his writing career as well as his political and diplomatic careers, serving as a private secretary to the administrator of various colonies in Southern Africa. He eventually wrote propaganda for the British war effort during World War I. He was elected Member of Parliament for the Combined Scottish Universities in 1927, but he spent most of his time on his writing career, notably writing “The Thirty-Nine Steps” and other adventure fiction.

John Buchan was born in Perth, Scotland, the first child of John Buchan – a Free Church of Scotland Minister – and Helen Jane Buchan.

He grew up in Kirkcaldy, Fife and spent his summers with his maternal grandparents in Broughton on the Scottish borders. He loved walking and wildlife and featured both in his writings.

After graduating from Oxford, Buchan began a career in diplomacy and government, and became private secretary to Alfred Milner – then High Commissioner for Southern Africa, Governor of Cape Colony, and colonial administrator of Transvaal and the Orange Free State. On his return to London he resumed his writing, entered into a partnership with the publishing company Thomas Nelson & Son, and became the editor of The Spectator. He was also called to the bar – but did not practise as a lawyer. On July 15, 1907 he married Susan Charlotte Grosvenor – a distant cousin of the Duke of Westminster. They had four children – two of whom would spend the greater part of their lives in Canada.

In 1910, John Buchan wrote “Prester John”, the first of his adventure novels, set in South Africa. In 1911, he was chosen as Unionist candidate for the Borders Seat of Peebles and Selkirk, but was not elected.

With the outbreak of the First World War Buchan worked for the British War Propaganda Bureau, and as a correspondent in France for The Times (of England). He continued to write fiction and in 1915 published his most famous work, “The Thirty-Nine Steps” – a spy thriller set just prior to World War I. The novel featured Buchan’s often used hero Richard Hannay.

Having returned to London after a long residence in South Africa, Richard Hannay finds himself stuck in a rut.

Much to the reader’s delight, he’ll make his way out of it by falling into another ditch so deep that it hides in its dark recesses murder, espionage, and a plot to undermine the security of England on the eve of World War I. He’ll climb to ultimate safety only by means of the mysterious thirty-nine steps that give this splendid adventure its title.

Inadvertently stumbling into a nest of intrigue, Hannay befriends an American who is in possession of information regarding a plan to assassinate the Greek premier on his imminent visit to London; within a matter of days, the American is the victim of homicide and Hannay is soon the authorities’ chief suspect.

A sequel to “The ThirtyNine Steps”, “Greenmantle” - was published by Buchan in 1916. That same year he was sent out to the Western Front and attached to the British Army’s General Headquarters Intelligence Section.

Recognised for his abilities, he was appointed Director of Information in 1917, under Lord Beaverbrook – which Buchan said was the “toughest job I ever took on”. He also assisted Charles Masterman in publishing a monthly magazine arduously detailing the history of the war – later published in twenty four volumes as “Nelson’s History of the War” (1915-1919).

After the close of World War I Buchan turned his attention to writing on historical subjects, together with his usual thrillers and novels.

By the mid 1920s he was living in Elsfield, Oxfordshire. He became president of the Scottish Historical Society, and a trustee of the National Library of Scotland.

In 1927. he was elected as the Unionist Party Member of Parliament for the Combined Scottish Universities.

“In adult, post-war life, Buchan was loaded with more honours than even the undergraduate had forecast.

His ascent to the truly great of his time climaxed with his appointment as GovernorGeneral of Canada 1935, as Baron Tweedsmuir. He was a good choice, as imperialists go; few were more enlightened. It was his right hand which signed Canada’s declaration of war on Germany in 1939.

“Buchan’s fiction, all dashed down with his left hand, falls into various categories. Most lastingly popular are the five Hannay “shockers”. Sir Edward Leithen, a barrister (and an evident self-portrait) features in a string of quieter thrillers. Buchan wrote a series of comic-adventure yarns centered on the retired Glasgow greengrocer, Dickson McCunn, and his “Gorbals Diehards” band of street urchins. Buchan never managed a serious novel. The nearest he came was his last, ‘Sick Heart River’, begun in 1939, as he lay dying. In it, Leithen, himself dying of TB, meditates on his life ... his achievements are hollow, his honours meaningless. He devotes his remaining months of life to the search from a French Canadian gone missing in the frozen North.”

John Buchan died of a cerebral thrombosis – aged only 65 – on February 6, 1940. He suffered a head injury when he fell after suffering stroke at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

After lying in state in the Senate Chamber on Parliament Hill, Buchan was given a state funeral at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Ottawa. His ashes were returned to the United Kingdom aboard the cruiser HMS Orion for burial at Elsfield, his estate in Oxfordshire.

“Writing is a delightful hobby”, he told a friend, “but it becomes stale and tarnished if adopted as a profession.”

The truth about bees Animal matters | KIM ARANHA

I

have always been fascinated by a statement that I hear frequently, that if there are no bees in the world we will run out of food and starve. That always struck me as pretty extreme.

Recently the BBC ran a report where they look at the importance of bees in our lives.

They point out that bees play a massive part in our food, either directly because they pollinate the fruit and vegetables we eat, or indirectly by pollinating the food that the farm animals consume if we have meat on our plates.

Pollination is an essential part of the process in flowering plant reproduction. The little honey bee is the creature that does most of that, even though the wind, birds and bats play their part too, but compared to the bee their contribution is negligible. All sorts of fruits and vegetables depend on the honey bee to pollinate in order to develop into the plants and fruit we want to eat.

We are being warned that the honey bee population is in grave danger.

Every year the danger becomes more real. Europe has now temporarily banned the use of one type of insecticide called neonicotinoids on all their flowering crops. Insecticides containing this ingredient can affect bees and other invertebrates.

It is not quite true that if all bees were swept off the face of the earth there would be no food, because nowadays we are able to fill their pollinating roll artificially.

Have you ever sat perfectly still and watched a bee at work? Here in Nassau there are plants that attract the honey bees, but the best display of bees hard at work I have ever seen is sitting in an English garden in the summer. Their buzzing is loud enough to alert you that they are at work, and then you watch them go from flower to flower, to flower. They move with such skilled and deliberate determination; there is a definite aura of “they know what they are doing.”

The BBC has also featured a report from Russia where they stated great concern for the drastic reduction of their bee population, especially in the central and southern sections of Russia over the past few months.

Apparently 20 regions have reported massive bee deaths. Once again the pesticides are being blamed, but surely it is up to the farmer to do his homework and to be sure that he does not use a pesticide that is going to kill off the bee population...talk about killing the goose that lays the golden egg!

Russia is also a major producer of world honey. In the past they would regularly produce approximately 100,000

ow that so many dogs have been airlifted to the US to make room for the Hurricane Dorian refugees, the Bahamas Humane Society has a slightly smaller pool of adoption dogs to choose from. That doesn’t make them any less special.

Sophie is one of those who will be forever grateful if you can provide her a forever home. Sophie is about two years old. She’s friendly with other dogs but would be OK on her own as well. She’s not too familiar with cats.

Kids or adults are fine and she’ll be happy to be a yard dog, enjoying a space of her own. Sophie will need some medical attention in the next few months, but once that’s done we expect she’ll live a long healthy potcake life. tonnes of honey a year and are now worried that this massive bee death could cause a 20 per cent reduction of their possible honey production this year.

It is not just the Russians who are concerned, France is seriously worried and they estimate that the decline will continue. In the past the French harvest of honey was around 20,000 tonnes. Recently it has been as low at 9,000 tonnes. In France they think that the culprit is climate change, but they do not rule out pesticides and the varroa mite spreading in to hives and infecting the bees.

One of the climate challenges is that France had late frosts that were followed by a severe heat wave, causing an unsuitable environment for the bees.

France and the EU produce 250,000 tonnes of honey yearly. The EU countries that contribute to this large quantity are: Spain, Germany, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Greece and France. The biggest producer in the world is China, coming in with a whopping 500,000 tonnes of honey a year.

What is such fun about honey is all the different flavours we get depending on what flowers or plants the bees are pollinating. There is a definite difference in flavour, say between clover honey and lavender honey.

Something I did not know and surprised me is that orchids depend on honey bees to pollinate them as well. When I sit outside here at home I do not see many bees ever, but I do not believe that I have ever seen one around the orchids. I will make a point of looking more carefully at my orchids.

It is funny how easily we take all these amazing details of nature for granted. How impeccable the plan is between the bee and the pollen, the honey making and the pollen. Everything appears to follow a meticulous master plan, but the problem is that if we humans remove one link in that carefully created plan the whole thing falls apart and we suddenly have a shortage of bees, which snowballs into all sorts of other shortages.

Years ago on TV there was an advertisement that said “it’s not nice to fool Mother Nature.” For sure!
